Dawson, Sarah P. „Digital X-ray analysis for monitoring fracture healing“. Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4285.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
X-ray based evaluation of different stages of fracture healing is a well established clinical standard. However, several studies have shown plain radiography alone to be an unreliable method to assess healing. The advent of digital X-ray systems provides the potential to perform quantitative analysis on X-ray images without disrupting normal clinical practice. Two aspects were explored in this study. The first was the measurement of mechanical fracture stiffness under four point bending and axial loading. The second was the inclusion of an Aluminium step wedge to provide Aluminium-equivalent thickness calibration information. Mechanical sti ness studies involved the development of equipment to perform four point bending on intra-medullary (IM) nailed tibial fractures, equipment to perform axial loading on conservatively treated humeral fractures, and fracture models to ex- amine the developed systems. Computational procedures to automatically measure the angle and offset occurring at the fracture site by comparing loaded and unloaded X-ray images were developed utilising cross-correlation. The apparatus and procedures were tested using the fracture models both in X-ray and using the Zwick materials testing machine. The four point bending system was applied clinically to a series of IM nailed tibial fracture patients and the axial loading system to two conservatively treated humeral fracture patients. Mechanical stiffness results showed that the apparatus worked well in the clinical radiography environment and was unobtrusive to normal practice. The developed X-ray analysis procedure provided reliable measurements. However, in the case of IM nailed tibial fractures, both angular and displacement movements were too small to be accurately assessed or to provide reliable stiffness measurements. This indicated that this patient group was possibly unsuitable for mechanical stiffness measurements or that higher loads needed to be applied to the fracture site. The case studies of conservatively treated humeral fractures showed potential in detecting movement between loaded and unloaded X-rays and using this to provide sti ness information. Further investigation is required to show that this technique has the potential to aid fracture healing monitoring. Investigation into Aluminium step wedge calibration began with the design of different step wedges and X-ray phantoms. Initial image analysis involved studying the automatic processing applied by a digital Computed Radiography (CR) Fuji sys- tem and modelling of the inhomogeneities in X-ray images as well as investigation into the effect of and correction for scatter, overlying soft tissue and bone thickness. Computational procedures were developed to semi-automatically detect the steps of the step wedge, form an exponential Aluminium step thickness to grey level calibration graph, measure soft tissue and bone thickness, and correct for the heel effect and scatter contributions. Tests were carried out on pre-clinical models and results compared to ash weight and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). A clinical study of radial fractures was used to investigate the effectiveness of the step wedge calibration system in monitoring fracture healing changes. Results using the step wedge indicated that the calibration technique was e ective in detecting and correcting for aspects in uencing Aluminium-equivalent thickness measures. With careful processing, useful information was obtained from digital X- rays that included the Aluminium step wedge and these correlated well with existing density measures. The use of the wedge in patient images showed that small increases in Aluminium-equivalent thickness of the fracture site could be detected. This was most useful for intra-patient comparisons throughout the course of healing rather than providing quantitative measurements which were comparable to other density measures. In conclusion, this thesis shows the potential for accurate analysis of digital X- rays to aid the monitoring of healing changes in fracture patients, particularly with application of axial loading and the use of step wedge calibration.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is a relatively new discipline, studying the structural condition of buildings and other constructions. Current SHM systems are either wired or wireless, with a relatively high cost and low accuracy. This thesis exploits a blend of digital signal processing methodologies, for structural health monitoring (SHM) and develops a wireless SHM system in order to provide a low cost implementation yet reliable and robust. Existing technologies of wired and wireless sensor network platforms with high sensitivity accelerometers are combined, in order to create a system for monitoring the structural characteristics of buildings very economically and functionally, so that it can be easily implemented at low cost in buildings. Well-known and established statistical time series methods are applied to SHM data collected from real concrete structures subjected to earthquake excitation and their strong and weak points are investigated. The necessity to combine parametric and non-parametric approaches is justified and to this direction novel and improved digital signal processing techniques and indexes are applied to vibration data recordings, in order to eliminate noise and reveal structural properties and characteristics of the buildings under study, that deteriorate due to environmental, seismic or anthropogenic impact. A characteristic and potential harming specific case study is presented, where consequences to structures due to a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.4 M are investigated. Furthermore, is introduced a seismic influence profile of the buildings under study related to the seismic sources that exist in the broad region of study.

Underlying the majority of remotely-sensed data analysis is the assumption that geographical phenomena, such as rivers, heather-moors and the dynamics associated with such objects, can be adequately detected and identified through the use of spectral and other visual information alone. There is a common misconception that any major deficiencies of quantitative analyses are "hardware problems": that by increasing the spectral, spatial, radiometric and temporal resolutions of sensors, geographical phenomena will be identified with similarly increasing accuracy and reliability. This, however, is an unrealistic viewpoint. This thesis has developed a prototype of an automated system based on the principle that by considering the "real-world" properties of the land, a more effective and robust analysis of its dynamic nature can ensue. SYMOLAC is an automated SYstem for MOnitoring LAnd Cover based upon theories of artificial intelligence. It has been developed within a specifically designed hybrid software environment called ETORA, an Environment for Task-Orientated Analysis. This prototype environment allows SYMOLAC to utilise disparate sources of spatial data, to reason with both quantitative and qualitative knowledge, to model disparate domain uncertainties, and to exploit the functionality of third-party software components. Unlike standard approaches, it allows an automated analysis to focus on each particular domain task and how it may best be performed with the available data, knowledge and software resources. The detection of forest felling and the subsequent update of the Land Cover of Scotland (1988) dataset forms the initial application of SYMOLAC. It is concluded that the system's approach is flexible, extensible and adaptable, and demonstrates one way in which satellite imagery can offer potential to the future monitoring of complex land cover change without the need for human intervention.

Annotation:
The traditional paper-based method of field data collection has always been a time-consuming and cumbersome process. Agency personnel in the field complete a standard evaluation form, which is then returned to the office and entered into a computer database for storage and analysis. Throughout this process, data can easily be lost or misinterpreted. As data requirements continue to expand, field data collection can quickly overwhelm a regulatory agency's manpower and resources, which only serves to exacerbate these problems. Recent technological developments can help agencies and organizations keep up with this growing demand and have begun to change the method of data collection and management. The overall goal of this study is to develop, demonstrate, and evaluate a digital protocol for the use of technology in a volunteer stream monitoring application and draw conclusions on its applicability as a more effective means of data collection in a wide variety of fields. The protocol includes digital evaluation forms and integrated help files for use in the field. The digital evaluation forms are based on paper evaluation forms developed by researchers conducting a stream corridor assessment of Stroubles Creek in Blacksburg, Virginia. The protocol was developed using available hardware and software. Collected data can be downloaded directly from a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and stored on a hard drive or system server. The data can then be input directly into a Geographic Information System (GIS) database to enhance the visualization and usefulness of the information. The GIS allows surveyors to view the relationships among the many factors affecting the stream, as well as preparing the data for advanced analysis. Two examples are provided: a field application of the protocol on streams currently listed for Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development; and an environmental education setting in a Virginia elementary school. Conclusions drawn from these applications are also described.

Water is an essential part of human life. According to the sustainable development goal (SDG), monitoring water quality is a fundamental goal of the international community. Therefore, there has been research on how the quality of water can be monitored and improved.  Data related to water quality can provide service opportunities such as to inform if the water is suitable for drinking by monitoring the quality of water resources. However, there has been limited research exploring opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services to fulfill requirements in rural areas, such as clean and safe water for drinking. Some challenges can be due to the geographical location of the area or avoiding certain regions for implementing a service due to political agenda or infrastructure, especially in less developed countries or areas. The lack of exploration of opportunities points to the need to further investigate service opportunities like to inform if the water is suitable for drinking in rural areas. It is crucial to monitor water quality and offer services because bad water quality can lead to health issues or poor yield in agriculture, some of the few consequences. Therefore, in my paper, using the Design Science Research (DSR) approach, I have explored various opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services in Indian rural areas. The result demonstrates opportunities related to the exploration of digital water quality monitoring services in rural areas and the challenges that need to be overcome in order to realize the opportunities. This overview can inform researchers, designers, and stakeholders to understand new service opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services in rural areas.

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is a method for characterizing and monitoring discrete loads connected to a power distribution system. This can include a ship, a car, or a utility distribution system. The entire concept is predicated on having access to digital samples of the current and voltage signals at the distribution point. This thesis presents a analog to digital converter for this task and a new low-power inductive current sensor for deployment in a standard circuit breaker box. The current sensor uses discrete JFET devices to passively transmit data inductively through the steel door of the circuit breaker.

This thesis describes the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of a prototype instrumentation system for flame stability and burner condition monitoring on fossil-fuel-fired furnaces. A review of methodologies and technologies for the monitoring of flame stability and burner condition is given, together with the discussions of existing problems and technical requirements in their applications. A technical strategy, incorporating optical sensing, digital imaging, digital signal/image processing and soft computing techniques, is proposed. Based on this strategy, a prototype flame imaging system is developed. The system consists of a rigid optical probe, an optical-bearn-splitting unit, an embedded photodetector and signal-processing board, a digital camera, and a mini-motherboard with associated application software. Detailed system design, implementation, calibration and evaluation are reported. A number of flame characteristic parameters are extracted from flame images and radiation signals. Power spectral density, oscillation frequency, and a proposed universal flame stability index are used for the assessment of flame stability. Kernel-based soft computing techniques are employed for burner condition monitoring. Specifically, kernel principal components analysis is used for the detection of abnormal conditions in a combustion process, whilst support vector machines are used for the prediction of NO x emission and the identification of flame state. Extensive experimental work was conducted on a 9MW th heavy-oil-fired combustion test facility to evaluate the performance of the prototype system and developed algorithms. Further tests were carried out on a 660MWth heavy-oil-fired boiler to investigate the cause of the boiler vibration from a flame stability point of view. Results Obtained from the tests are presented and discussed.

Water quality monitoring is vital in smart city planning for managing water resources. In the smart city, more data is being collected. In terms of data related to water quality, many data sources such as smart sensors attached to water quality monitoring systems have been continuously collecting a significant amount of data. The potential of collected data from these sources holds no value for smart cities, unless it is being used to provide digital services such as information about clean and safe drinking water, swimming, fishing, domestic uses, and water reuse. However, the knowledge on how to utilize water quality data for the benefits of smart cities is limited. So, in this paper, I propose digital water quality monitoring services for smart city residents. I explore this proposition through a design study engaging smart city residents, service designers, and developers of water quality monitoring systems. As a result, a service blueprint is presented to illustrate how such services can be designed to provide water quality information for different activities. The study aims to illustrate how opportunities of water quality monitoring system can be explored for smart cities. The study intends that the results are helpful to designers and researchers in designing and developing digital water quality monitoring services in smart cities.

Annotation:
Information and communication technologies (ICT) play an important role in the social lives of adolescents, as many of the social interactions that once occurred in face-to-face contexts are now occurring through digital technologies. Although many of these interactions are prosocial in nature, adolescents may also engage in high levels of aggression in ICT-mediated contexts (Bauman, 2013; Bauman & Newman, 2013). Furthermore, they often engage in self-monitoring when communicating with peers through ICTs in order to maintain a positive public image (Subrahmanyam, Garcia, Harsono, Li, & Lipana, 2009). These digital behaviors may have implications for how individuals establish and maintain their place within social hierarchies in natural peer contexts (e.g., schools). Drawing on both The Hyperpersonal Theory of Computer-Mediated Communication and Resource Control Theory, the current study examined concurrent associations between digital self-monitoring, cyberaggression, cyber-prosocial behaviors, and popularity. A sample of 273 (112 boys; 161 girls) adolescents attending high schools in the Upper-Midwest of the United States provided data for this study during the fall of the 2014 – 2015 school year. Students completed a series of questionnaires consisting of peer-reports and self-reports of aggressive and prosocial behaviors in face-to-face and digital contexts, peer-reports of popularity, and self-reports of self-monitoring in digital and face-to-face environments. Small positive correlations were found when examining associations between peer- and self-rated cyberaggression and peer- and self-rated cyber-prosocial behavior (rs between .11 and .22). Controlling for face-to-face overt and relational aggression, cyberaggression was negatively related to adolescents’ popularity, particularly for individuals who engaged in low to moderate levels of digital self-monitoring. Cyber-prosocial behavior was positively associated with popularity generally, and specifically for adolescents low in face-to-face prosocial behaviors. Cyberaggression, cyber-prosocial behaviors, and sex also interacted to predict popularity. Analyses revealed that for boys high in cyber-prosocial behaviors, cyberaggression was positively associated with popularity, while the relation between cyberaggression and popularity was not significant for girls or for boys low in cyber-prosocial behavior. Results are discussed within the context of Resource Control Theory and how they may be applied to researchers’ understanding of peer relationships in digital and face-to-face social contexts.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Flotation is notorious for its susceptibility to process upsets and consequently its poor performance, making successful flotation control systems an elusive goal. The control of industrial flotation plants is often based en the visual appearance of the froth phase, and depends to a large extent on the experience and ability of a human operator. Machine vision systems provide a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control. The rapid development in computer VISIon, computational resources and artificial intelligence and the integration of these technologies are creating new possibilities in the design and implementation of commercial machine vision systems for the monitoring and control of flotation plants. Current machine vision systems are available but not without their shortcomings. These systems cannot deal with fine froths where the bubbles are very small due to the segmentation techniques employed by them. These segmentation techniques are cumbersome and computationally expensive making them slow in real time operation. The approach followed in this work uses neural networks to solve the problems mentioned above. Neural networks are able to extract information from images of the froth phase without regard to the type and structure of the froth. The parallel processing capability of neural networks, ease of implementation and the advantages of supervised or unsupervised training of neural networks make them potentially suited for real-time industrial machine vision systems. In principle, neural network models can be implemented in an adaptive manner, so that changes in the characteristics of processes are taken into account. This work documents the development of linear and non-linear principal component models, which can be used in a real-time machine vision system for the monitoring, and control of froth flotation systems. Features from froth images of flotation processes were extracted via linear and non-linear principal component analysis. Conventional linear principal component analysis and three layer autoassociative neural networks were used in the extraction of linear principal components from froth images. Non-linear principal components were extracted from froth images by a three and five layer autoassociative neural network, as well as localised principal component analysis based on k-means clustering. Three principal components were extracted for each image. The correlation coefficient was used as a measure of the amount of variance captured by each principal component. The principal components were used to classify the froth images. A probabilistic neural network and a feedforward neural network classifier were developed for the classification of the froth images. Multivariate statistical process control models were developed using the linear and non-linear principal component models. Hotellings T2 statistic and the squared prediction error based on linear and non-linear principal component models were used in the development of multivariate control charts. It was found that the first three features extracted with autoassociative neural networks were able to capture more variance in froth images than conventional linear principal components, the features extracted by the five layer autoassociative neural networks were able to classify froth images more accurately than features extracted by conventional linear principal component analysis and three layer autoassociative neural networks. As applied, localised principal component analysis proved to be ineffective, owing to difficulties with the clustering of the high dimensional image data. Finally the use of multivariate statistical process control models to detect deviations from normal plant operations are discussed and it is shown that Hotellings T2 and squared prediction error control charts are able to clearly identify non-conforming plant behaviour.

Patients in hospital can be prone to sudden, life-threatening changes in their cardiovascular state. Haemodynamic parameters such as blood pressure, pulse transit time (PTT) and perfusion can be monitored in clinical situations to identify these changes as early as possible. Continuous blood pressure is usually monitored using a catheter placed into a major artery, but this is invasive and involves risk to the patient. In the last decade, the field of non-contact vital sign monitoring has emerged, with growing evidence that the remote photoplethysmogram (rPPG) signal can be used to estimate vital signs using video cameras. If the analysis of the rPPG signal can be expanded to include the estimation of haemodynamic parameters, it could result in methods for the continuous, non-contact monitoring of a subject's haemodynamic state. In a physiology study, a series of video recordings were made of 43 healthy volunteers. The subjects sat in a purpose-built chamber, and the composition of the air was carefully adjusted to cause the subjects to experience large, controlled changes in blood oxygen levels. To validate the video camera algorithms, reference data were also collected. Along with the volunteer study, a clinical study was performed to acquire data in a challenging clinical environment. Data were collected from patients on haemodialysis in the Renal Unit, a population likely to experience sudden changes in haemodynamics. The reference data from the Renal Unit study were analysed to determine the extent to which PTT and mean arterial pressure (MAP) are related. The correlation coefficients and linear fits were found on a global and a per-subject basis. In addition, the video recordings from the Physiology study were processed to derive rPPG signals, and these signals were analysed to obtain estimates for PTT. Local rPPG signals were also derived for different regions of interest, and the waveforms were analysed using a novel application of the technique of signal averaging to produce spatial maps of perfusion and blood flow. The correlation between conventionally measured PTT and MAP was found to be weaker in the haemodialysis population than has been shown elsewhere in the literature, except for a sub-set of patients. The results of the video analysis showed that PTT could be estimated robustly and consistently, although direct validation of these estimates was not possible because of the different method used to calculate the reference PTT. For most subjects, the spatial mapping methods produced robust maps that were consistent over time. These results suggest that it is possible to detect changes in haemodynamics using a video camera, and that this could have applications in healthcare, providing that challenges such as subject movement and clinical validation can be overcome.

Heart rate, oxygen saturation in blood, blood pressure and glicemia are variables of major importance in clinical evaluation. Of the four variables, the heart rate and oxygenation in blood are those whose acquisition is relatively less discomfortable for the patient. Blood pressure is typically measured with a sphygmomanometer with the aid of a stethoscope. The sphygmomanometer consists of a tissue cu with an in atable half sleeve, which is wrapped around an arm or leg of the patient. The monitorization of glicemia, very important in diabetics, is made with a glucometer. This measurement implies always an discomfortable process of extracting a small quantity of blood. Even the most recent instruments that obtain the value of glycemia through interstitial uid analysis (collected just below the dermis) imply a slight sting. The project proposed here aims to improve patient comfort in the process of acquisition of these clinical variables. A single system is designed that integrates the monitoring of the four variables mentioned and does so in the least invasive way possible.

In the development stages of a Digital twin of production assets, especially machine tools, real time process monitoring and data gathering proves to be vital. Having a monitoring system that monitors and updates the operators or managers in real time, helps improve productivity in terms of reducing downtime through predictive/preventive analytics and by incorporating in process quality assessment capabilities. When it comes to Real time monitoring of machine tools andprocesses, sensor technologies have proven to be the most effective and widely researched. Years of research and development have paved the way for many smart sensor technologies that come both in built with the machine tools as well as external applications. However, these technologies prove to be expensive and complicated to implement especially for Small and Medium Enterprises. This thesis focuses on evaluating and testing a simple, cost-efficient monitoring system using inexpensive sensor technologies that would help optimize an existing Digital twin setup for machine tools for Small and Medium Enterprises. Experiments with a 5 axis CNC machine tool using different tools and varying operating parameters, materials were performed, and the relevant sensor data were collected, mapped, analysed for accuracy and benchmarking. The thesis also evaluates the integration of this data with the information already collected from other sources, improve existing data reliability, and provides guidelines on this could be transformed usefully to create more value to SME’s.

An automatic system for supervision of the video and audio content in digital TV broadcasts was investigated in this master’s thesis project. The main goal is to find the best and most cost effective solution for Teracom to verify that the broadcast TV content as received by remote receivers is the same as that incoming to Teracom from content providers. Different solutions to this problem will be presented. The report begins with some background information about the Swedish terrestrial digital TV network and the MPEG-2 compression standard used to transport audio and video; including a description of the DVB Systems and Transport Stream protocol. It describes two current techniques for the supervision of the audio and video content, including an evaluation of these techniques. The first solution is to monitor the video and audio content either by detecting common errors such as frozen picture, visible artifacts, or by comparing the content from two different sources, i.e. a comparison of the output and the input content. The later could be done using video fingerprinting. The second solution monitors the video and audio content indirectly by analyzing the Transport Stream. This could be done either by comparing two Transport Streams to verify that the broadcast signal is identical to the received signal or by detecting common errors in the streams. Further two new potential solutions will be presented based on the research utilizing background knowledge of the MPEG-2 compression standard. The thesis ends with a summary with conclusions and evaluations of all four solutions and future work.

Despite the extensive Brazilian coast areas, little is known on underwater acoustic environments in Brazil. Acoustic environments (or soundscape) are composed by biological, geological and man-made sound sources. Soundscapes are strongly linked to ecosystems dynamics, and follow temporal patters that can vary at daily and seasonal scales. Thus, for soundscape characterization, it is necessary to undertake sound recordings for long periods, which demands innovative analyzing methods. Accordingly, the present research focuses in two principal objectives: (1) to develop methods for analyzing long-term acoustic recordings and, (2) to characterize marine soundscapes of selected points in São Paulo State. Four deployment sites were selected for the underwater acoustic monitoring: a point located at the channel entrance of the Santos Harbor, and three marine Protected Areas (PAs) in Sao Paulo state. As a result, the largest underwater acoustic database from Brazilian seas was acquired. The present work used Power Spectral Density (PSD), Sound Pressure Level (SPL) and Spectrograms to develop an innovative methodology for analyzing long-term acoustic data. In addition, a new visualization tool and a method for automatic detection of dawn and dusk choruses are presented. The achieved results validated the proposed methodology as an effective tool for analyzing long-term acoustic data. The area close to the first site, the vicinity of Santos Harbor, was dominated by ship noise, which values reach levels that can affect some species of fish and marine mammals. The soundscapes of the other three remaining measurement sites were dominated by fish and crustacean choruses, with daily and seasonal patterns (related to sunrise and sunset). For the monitored regions, the present work signifies the first contribution for cataloguing fish choruses, and establishes a baseline for the study of their underwater acoustic environment. Although the proposed methodology has used long-term undersea acoustic datasets as case-study, it can also be extended for monitoring other aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems. Finally, the research indicates to Brazilian environmental agencies and to the related scientific community that passive acoustic monitoring is a noninvasive and cost-effective tool that can be used for the management of PAs and points of economic relevance.

Annotation:
The coastal zone is a highly dynamic entity both spatially and temporally and when shoreline changes (and in particular retreat) occur on a hmnan time-scale, measurement of the rate of change becomes a pressing issue. This dynamism presents an excellent scenario for monitoring change using remote sensing techniques, and in the case of coastal sand dunes, where the requirement is to measure small scale changes such as erosion or accretion in the region of 10 or 20 m, aerial photography is the preferred source of remotely sensed data. The rapid developments in digital camera technology and real time satellite differential Global Positioning Systems have yielded new opportunities for mapping and monitoring environmental change when used with image processing and mapping software and state-of-the-art digital photogrammetric workstations. Despite the progress in digital technologies, however, there is still considerable lack of awareness on the part of potential users, and it is in response to this that the processing chain for data collection through to orthophoto production described here has been developed. This study explores the major issues that affect quality, mission logistics and cost and will demonstrate the methodology and application of digital techniques for producing georectified imagery and contoured orthophoto maps of coastal environments. This will be achieved through a series of case studies of dynamic dune environments in south-west England and France. Digital imagery was captured using a colour infrared Aerial Digital Photographic System and ground control was collected using differential Global Positioning Systems. This study seeks to assess the application of this imagery to coastal dune monitoring, putting these new techniques within the grasp of coastal dune managers, enabling them to make use of digital imagery captured to different specifications depending on the accuracy requirement of the end product. The results indicate that this type of imagery and the techniques used can provide the dune manager with information which would otherwise be too costly or time consuming to acquire. 2D rectification of the imagery provided maps of dune retreat and accretion with errors in the region of± 1.5m, and rectification to a higher order using 3D photogrammetric correction provided 1 :5000 contoured orthophotographs with mean xy errors in the region of 2. 5 m and mean elevation errors in the region of 1.5m.

This thesis explore the possibility to automate a process for configuration of secondary substations monitoring and control. By using a network information system (NIS), information of secondary substations can be extracted, such as feeder naming, primary equipment type, rating and model. From this information an automated process of configuring the secondary substation is possible, which open up the possibility to cost-efficiently digitalise the distribution grid. In the project, the standard IEC 61850 for configuration of communications of intelligent electrical devices was used to automate and standardize the process. The process starts with a extracted IEC 61970 CIM file from the NIS. The IEC 61970 CIM file is converted into a IEC 61850 SCL file through an system engineering tool. The configuration is based of information from the NIS, where the models and types of the equipments decides what type of functionality that is needed for the secondary substation. With help of the created SCL file hardware and human-machine interface (HMI) was configured, creating a full functional system for the secondary substation monitoring and control equipment. The usage of 400V capable input module together with bus couplers, configured in IEC 61850, lowers the configuration needed for the hardware. The usage of SCL files also helps automate the creation of HMI for the secondary substation through IEC 61850 based tools in SCADA software. Creating views of both single-line diagrams as well as digital representation of the secondary substation outgoing feeders with measured values on display. The result of the project helps show NIS information is sufficient and standards mature enough to allow an almost fully automated system. Lowering the total time spent on each stations configuration to around two hours. Leading the way for future development of automating software for configurations of the secondary substations.

This research is carried out to better understand the nature of the rock mass and to have a better anticipation of rock fragmentation before blasting the rock mass. Current practices of assessing rock mass usually involve techniques that focus on the surface or outcrop of the rock mass such as scanline surveys, window surveys, photogrammetry and laser scanning etc. These techniques generally lack the ability of providing sufficient information about the rock mass as well as bear various inherent constraints such as safety issues, time requirements, user biasness, equipment requirements and reproducibility of results. Similarly, the rock fragmentation is predicted using different mathematical equations known as fragmentation models. However, these models ignore some key factors that significantly affect the nature of fragmentation such as chargeability of blastholes, drilling information e.g. borehole deviation and require numerous rock parameters which are not well known in most cases. These models are often site-specific and are mostly developed for surface mines. Therefore, their application in underground mining is not so common. The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of eliminating the constraints and supporting the current practices of rock mass assessment and rock fragmentation prediction. In this regard, drill monitoring technique has been selected as a potential tool for analysing the rock mass and forecast the rock fragmentation. To test the selected technique, measurement while drilling (MWD) data was collected from three different mines. The variations in MWD data were analysed to identify different zones and structures present inside the rock mass. The results were compared to 3D images obtained by close-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry for validation, which showed a close agreement with each other. Similarly, MWD data was used to classify the rock mass into five different classes i.e. solid, slightly fractured, highly fractured, having cavities, and major cavities in a sublevel caving operation. The loading operation of the blasted rock was filmed and digital images of LHD buckets containing blasted rock were extracted from the video recordings. The blasted rock inside the buckets were categorized as fine, medium, coarse and oversize fragmentation based on their median fragment size (X50). A statistical analysis was carried out to see the correlation between MWD based rock mass classes and fragmentation classes. The results showed that fine and medium size fragmentation has better correlation and can be predicted with higher accuracy using MWD data as compared to coarse and oversize fragmentation. The results suggest that the drill monitoring technique has the potential to assess rock mass as well as predict rock fragmentation to some extent. It can be used to differentiate between a weak or strong rock mass or between a fractured or competent rock mass. It can be used to differentiate between joints, cavities or foliations etc. It can also be used to predict finer and medium size fractions of the blasted rock with reasonable accuracy. However, the coarser and oversize fragmentation didn’t have a reliable correlation with MWD data. The potential of using drill monitoring technique for rock mass assessment and rock fragment prediction can be further explored and validated using other established rock mass and fragmentation assessment techniques. It can largely overcome the time, cost and safety constraints associated with the methods already in practice.

The use of Application Performance Monitoring (APM) for collecting data about performance and end-user behaviors in complex software systems is increasing. APM is used to ensure availability and robustness and to enhance end-user experiences. This study aims to investigate how the adoption of APM can be done, what challenges organizations face during the implementation as well as costs and performance overhead associated with APM. This is achieved through a case study in which APM is introduced into the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system MONITOR G5, developed and maintained by the Swedish software company Monitor ERP System AB. The system is developed in Microsoft’s .NET Framework and the APM service used is Microsoft’s Application Insights. The study resulted in a proposed APM solution wherein data regarding user interactions, performance and errors are collected and visualized. Six dashboards were created, showing different aspects of the collected data, for instance: which parts of the system is most and least frequently used, errors, load times and performance metrics such as processor and memory usage. The cost analysis shows that monetary costs can be very high, but strategies for suppressing costs are proposed. The performance tests that were conducted to determine the performance overhead of APM are inconclusive, but it is likely that the performance penalty of using APM is small.

Metal fatigue tests are an everyday occurrence that updates existing fatigue libraries, ensuring that structures and components do not fail when in use. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) provides standard tests whereby certain material properties are obtained by the exact same method for each test, providing designers the information to prevent premature failure. The Fatigue Crack Growth Rate (FCGR) of a standard specimen provides information for situations where a crack may exist in components. The critical size of the crack determines when it is safe to use a component and when to discard it. Testing methods relating to fatigue crack growth propagation rates vary with respect to requirements and conditions. A wide variety of test methods can be utilised to find reliable data. One such a method uses a travelling microscope. It has been extensively used with success, but requires constant stoppages for measurements and user attention to make interval measurements. Alternative measurement methods have solved these disadvantages but have generally been of the contact and indirect types. Contact to the specimen may in some cases influence the results negatively, while indirect methods generally require previously obtained data to calibrate the results. The presented digital image analysis method has in principle the same functioning as that of the travelling microscope whilst eliminating constant user attention and stoppages. The process was automated and provided a cost saving alternative to similar products available on the market. The standard test method for measurement of fatigue crack growth rates as outlined by ASTM E647 (2002) was employed to provide standardised results. The designed and assembled test facility was put to test when a FCGR test was conducted. The set-up consisted of an lnstron 1603 Electromagnetic Resonance machine, a Nikon D70 and a PC with acquired and custom written software. The digital image analysis method provided crack growth measurements with a difference of less than 1% from the actual values. Furthermore, the end result provided a Paris equation for a mild steel specimen.

lderesi and Bakacak landslides in Asarsuyu Catchment for 42 years period by the digital aerial photogrammetric techniques while evaluating the possible use of archive aerial photography in such analysis. To achieve the purpose of the study an orthophoto map was generated by aerial photographs belonging to 1994 year. The orthophoto map was utilized as a base map for aerial photo interpretation of different sets of aerial photographs corresponding to 1952, 1972, 1984 and 1994 years. As a result of this, 4 landslide activity maps are obtained. In addition, the characteristics of these landslides are analyzed by utilizing digital elevation model (DEM) created from stereo photographs of 1994. As a result of the study, no considerable variation is detected in the position of main boundaries of Bü
lbü
lderesi and Bakacak landslides except some minor differences. However, within the landslides many topographical changes were observed between 1952 and 1994 period. Based on the profiles from toe to crest of the Bü
lbü
lderesi landslide, the approximate length was measured as 4773m whereas the approximate width was about 2614m. The areal extent was calculated as ~12km2 having an approximate slope gradient ranging between 10-15°
with local variations. On the other hand, the approximate length of Bakacak landslide was 4420m and the approximate width was 832m from toe to crest with an area of ~4km2 and with an approximate slope angle 9-14°

Annotation:
Recent research has indicated that the pupil diameter (PD) in humans varies with their affective states. However, this signal has not been fully investigated for affective sensing purposes in human-computer interaction systems. This may be due to the dominant separate effect of the pupillary light reflex (PLR), which shrinks the pupil when light intensity increases. In this dissertation, an adaptive interference canceller (AIC) system using the H∞ time-varying (HITV) adaptive algorithm was developed to minimize the impact of the PLR on the measured pupil diameter signal. The modified pupil diameter (MPD) signal, obtained from the AIC was expected to reflect primarily the pupillary affective responses (PAR) of the subject. Additional manipulations of the AIC output resulted in a processed MPD (PMPD) signal, from which a classification feature, PMPDmean, was extracted. This feature was used to train and test a support vector machine (SVM), for the identification of stress states in the subject from whom the pupil diameter signal was recorded, achieving an accuracy rate of 77.78%. The advantages of affective recognition through the PD signal were verified by comparatively investigating the classification of stress and relaxation states through features derived from the simultaneously recorded galvanic skin response (GSR) and blood volume pulse (BVP) signals, with and without the PD feature. The discriminating potential of each individual feature extracted from GSR, BVP and PD was studied by analysis of its receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The ROC curve found for the PMPDmean feature encompassed the largest area (0.8546) of all the single-feature ROCs investigated. The encouraging results seen in affective sensing based on pupil diameter monitoring were obtained in spite of intermittent illumination increases purposely introduced during the experiments. Therefore, these results confirmed the benefits of using the AIC implementation with the HITV adaptive algorithm to isolate the PAR and the potential of using PD monitoring to sense the evolving affective states of a computer user.

Annotation:
Mobile victimisation is one form of cyber aggression that is increasing and affecting many young people in the developing world today. However, the focus on mobile victimisation in developing nations is limited. There is also limited theoretical work to enhance the conceptualisation of mobile victimisation. Understanding this phenomenon in developing countries is particularly critical as mobile phone usage and crime in these countries are among the highest in the world. Literature shows that in addition to these challenges, schools that have adopted paper or program-based interventions have not been very successful in combating victimisation. Research from other disciplines, however, suggests that digital interventions effectively address health and psychological challenges by offering digital self-intervention. Research shows that reporting bullying incidents is a form of intervention whose challenges in developing and maintaining mechanisms persist. Schools particularly lack systems for reporting and students do not trust some of the reporting mechanisms. Similar problems have been identified in cyberbullying literature. Reporting violence in schools is particularly important in a country like South Africa, where the rate of crime remains the highest in the world. Understanding the circumstances under which victims decide to report (or not report) is important for effective development and implementation of appropriate interventions. Studies on crime reporting provide mechanisms for predicting reporting behaviour that are mainly based on sociological, economic or psychological models. Given that this study investigated reporting behaviour from a technological perspective, technological models were also considered. However, focusing on one theoretical model may fail to capture the complexity of the factors influencing a victim's decision whether or not to report aggression. A broader theoretical perspective would allow for the identification of the various motivating factors which generally do not operate exclusively. In addition, most existing studies have focused on traditional forms of violence. Victimisation in schools is increasingly committed using mobile technology, making it imperative to examine the problem of reporting in a mobile environment. Reporting practices in a digital context may, however, differ in some aspects from reporting in a non-technological environment and these may vary across cultural groupings. Applying a design science research (DSR) process within a pragmatic paradigm and being informed by literature, this study developed an integrative framework for understanding the under-reporting of mobile victimisation by students so as to inform the development of a mobile-based intervention. Findings from the study confirmed that students do not report their victimisation because of economic, psychological, cultural-sociological and technological factors as predicted by the integrative theoretical framework. This confirmed the complexity of the factors influencing students decision whether or not to report aggression. This, therefore, implied that the proposed framework is not only valuable in explaining the broad socialcultural context of victimisation reporting, but also in reporting behaviours at the individual level. The proposed framework, therefore, informed the design, development and evaluation of a mobile application for reporting mobile victimisation faced by high school students in South Africa. An application named the Mobile Victimisation Monitoring and Reporting (MVMR) application was then developed and evaluated among high school students. The MVMR application (app) provides useful features that enable: reflection by students; empathy from adult figures; empowerment for the students; consequence for the bullies. It also mitigates students’ fear and provides them with the ability to control their reporting. Of the features engrained in the MVMR app to capture these themes, students found the option to report anonymously, the option to identify the bully and the display of their frequency of mobile phone use to be the most relevant and useful. The study makes significant contribution to knowledge by providing insights into the reporting behaviours of high school students, which is an understudied research area. One essential theoretical contribution was the development of an integrative theoretical framework that provides the theoretical and social-ecological underpinnings to reporting behaviour which have previously been broad-brush approaches given to a whole class or whole school. Concerning the contribution to practice, the study produced an IT artefact that is based on the proposed integrative theoretical framework. With this tool, high school students will have a means by which to report their victimisation and have the report addressed by an administrator who has a social-ecological understanding of that student. This creates a shift from generalised interventions and creates a more personalised approach to intervening mobile victimisation. Further discussions on the theoretical, practical and methodological contributions are made in this thesis, along with the limitations of the study and recommendations for future research.

Recent research discussed the development of image processing tools as a part of the quality control framework in manufacturing environments. This research could be divided into two image-based fault detection approaches: 1) MVS; and 2) MVS and control charts. Despite the intensive research in both groups, there is a disconnect between research and the actual needs on the shop-floor. This disconnect is mainly attributed to the following: â ¢ The literature for the first category has mainly focused on improving fault detection accuracy through the use of special setups without considering its impact on the manufacturing process. Therefore, many of these methods have not been utilized by industry, and these tools lack the capability of using images already present on the shop floor. â ¢ The studies presented on the second category have been mainly developed in isolation. In addition, most of these studies have focused more on introducing the concept of utilizing control charts on image data rather than tackling specific industry problems. In this thesis, these limitations are investigated and are disseminated to the research community through two different journal papers. In the first paper, it was shown that a face-recognition tool could be successfully used to detect faults in real-time in stamped processes, where the changes in image lighting conditions and part location were allowed to emulate actual manufacturing environments. On the other hand, the second paper reviewed the literature on image-based control charts and suggested recommendations for future research.

During the past two decades, many researchers have developed methods for the detection of structural defects at the early stages to operate the aerospace vehicles safely and to reduce the operating costs. The Surface Response to Excitation (SuRE) method is one of these approaches developed at FIU to reduce the cost and size of the equipment. The SuRE method excites the surface at a series of frequencies and monitors the propagation characteristics of the generated waves. The amplitude of the waves reaching to any point on the surface varies with frequency; however, it remains consistent as long as the integrity and strain distribution on the part is consistent. These spectral characteristics change when cracks develop or the strain distribution changes. The SHM methods may be used for many applications, from the detection of loose screws to the monitoring of manufacturing operations. A scanning laser vibrometer was used in this study to investigate the characteristics of the spectral changes at different points on the parts. The study started with detecting a load on a plate and estimating its location. The modifications on the part with manufacturing operations were detected and the Part-Based Manufacturing Process Performance Monitoring (PbPPM) method was developed. Hardware was prepared to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methods in real time. Using low-cost piezoelectric elements and the non-contact scanning laser vibrometer successfully, the data was collected for the SuRE and PbPPM methods. Locational force, loose bolts and material loss could be easily detected by comparing the spectral characteristics of the arriving waves. On-line methods used fast computational methods for estimating the spectrum and detecting the changing operational conditions from sum of the squares of the variations. Neural networks classified the spectrums when the desktop – DSP combination was used. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the SuRE and PbPPM methods.

Annotation:
This study demonstrates the value of historical aerial photographs as a source for monitoring long-term landslide evolution, which can be unlocked by using appropriate photogrammetric methods. The understanding of landslide mechanisms requires extensive data records; a literature review identified quantitative data on surface movements as a key element for their analysis. It is generally acknowledged that, owing to the flexibility and high degree of automation of modern digital photogrammetric techniques, it is possible to derive detailed quantitative data from aerial photographs. In spite of the relative ease of such techniques, there is only scarce research available on data quality that can be achieved using commonly available material, hence the motivation of this study. In two landslide case-studies (the Mam Tor and East Pentwyn landslides) the different types of products were explored, that can be derived from historical aerial photographs. These products comprised geomorphological maps, automatically derived elevation models (DEMs) and displacement vectors. They proved to be useful and sufficiently accurate for monitoring landslide evolution. Comparison with independent survey data showed good consistency, hence validating the techniques used. A wide range of imagery was used in terms of quality, media and format. Analysis of the combined datasets resulted in improvements to the stochastic model and establishment of a relationship between image ground resolution and data accuracy. Undetected systematic effects provided a limiting constraint to the accuracy of the derived data, but the datasets proved insufficient to quantify each factor individually. An important advancement in digital photogrammetry is image matching, which allows automation of various stages of the working chain. However, it appeared that the radiometric quality of historical images may not always assure good results, both for extracting DEMs and vectors using automatic methods. It can be concluded that the photographic archive can provide invaluable data for landslide studies, when modern photogrammetric techniques are being used. As ever, independent and appropriate checks should always be included in any photogrammetric design.

This master thesis presents the design and implementation of a framework for monitoringdata related to activities of daily living (ADL) in a smart home environment, conducted for theHuman Health and Activity Laboratory (H2Al) at Luleå University of Technology. The generalaim of such environments is to increase the quality of life by enabling elderly to live longer athome while reducing the consumption of resources necessary. The complexity of collection, filtering and storing of data in smart home environments is however inherent due to oftenmany interworking sensor-systems, which allmay have different APIs and communicationpathways. This means that knowing whether ‘all systems are go’ when for example doing astudy is not easy, especially for persons not trained in data science. This work therefore aim to design and implement a framework for datamonitoring thattargets smart home environments in which activities of daily living are important for analysisof health-related conditions and for the personalised tailoring of interventions. The frameworkprimarily collects data from four selected systems, that for example track the position andmovements of a person. The data is stored in a database and visualised on a website toallow for monitoring of individual sensor data being collected. The framework was validatedtogether with a occupational therapist through a proof-of-concept trial in the Human Healthand Activity Laboratory, for which healthy subjects conducted a typical test (making a salad)used when assessing human performance. In conclusion, the developed framework works as expected, collecting data frommanysensor systems and storing the data in a common format, while the visualisation on a websiteis perceived as giving an easy overview of monitored data. Additional data can easily be addedto the framework and other processes beyond monitoring can be linked to the data, suchas further data refinement and algorithms for activity recognition (possibly using machinelearning techniques). Future work include to better distinguish data from multiple occupants, develop themanagement of synchronous and asynchronous data, and refine the web interfacefor additional simplicity

Swanton Pacific Ranch is an approximately 1,300 ha working ranch and forest in northern Santa Cruz County, California, managed by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). On August 12, 2009, the Lockheed Fire burned 300 ha of forestland, 51% of the forested area on the property, with variable fire intensity and mortality. This study used existing inventory data from 47 permanent 0.08 ha (1/5 ac) plots to compare the accuracy of classifying mortality resulting from the fire using digital multispectral imagery and LiDAR. The percent mortality of trees at least 25.4 cm (10”) DBH was aggregated to three classes (0-25, 25-50, and 50-100%). Three separate Classification Analysis and Regression Tree (CART) models were created to classify plot mortality. The first used the best imagery predictor variable of those considered, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from 2010 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery, with shadowed pixel values adjusted, and non-canopy pixels removed. The second used the same NDVI in combination with selected variables from post-fire LiDAR data collected in 2010. The third used the same NDVI in combination with selected variables from differenced LiDAR data calculated using post-fire LiDAR and pre-fire LiDAR collected in 2008. The imagery alone was 74% accurate; the imagery and post-fire LiDAR model was 85% accurate, while the imagery and differenced LiDAR model was 83% accurate. These findings indicate that remote sensing data can accurately estimate post-fire mortality, and that the addition of LiDAR data to imagery may yield only modest improvement.

Digital piracy is a problem that may never disappear from society. Through readily available resources such as those found in a university, students will always have access to illegal goods. While piracy is a global phenomenon, an institution s resources combined with the typical college student s lack of funds makes it more lucrative. Students use a number of methods to justify their actions ranging from previewing media to bringing justice to a corrupt company. While trying to understand the mindset of pirates is one route to deal with piracy, corporations attempted to alleviate the situation using added software encoding. These messages are not always effective, and in some cases caused further damage to consumer morale. Furthermore, students such as Joel Tenenbaum, who continued to pirate music despite warnings from his parents and the recording industry, exemplify the type of person that is unfazed by legal threats, leading to a question of ethics. Students may not feel that downloading is stealing despite numerous warnings from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other major media organizations. The predominant solution used by universities involves monitoring the students network connection to detect Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connections or other connections that involve the transferring of copyrighted goods. Unfortunately, the current tools contain flaws that a crafty student may easily circumvent, undermining any attempts a university s IT department may use to deter piracy. This study explored the nature of piracy prevention tools used by IT departments in the Florida State University System in order to determine their relative effectiveness. The study also looked into the opinions of the Information Security Officer in terms of alternative piracy prevention techniques that do not involve legal action and monitoring. It was found that most institutions do not use a formal piece of software that monitors for infringing data. They also stated that while their current techniques can do its required task, it was not perfected to a point where it could run autonomously. Furthermore, institutions agreed that students lack proper ethics and concern over the matter of copyright, but were not fully convinced that other preventions methods would be effective. The study ultimately considered monitoring techniques a short-term solution and that more research should be put into finding long-term solutions. It also implied that IT departments should be better funded in order to keep up with the technological gap.

Our society moves towards digitalization and the industry is not an exception. Siemenshas developed a wireless condition monitoring device called Simotics Connect in order tohelp them to move forward in the world of digitalization. The Simotics Connect has threeinbuilt sensors. One for temperature, one for vibrations and one for magnetic flux density,a product that is new in the market. This master thesis has investigated its usability forthird party motors, which has not been done.Four areas were investigated, the status in the current market, creating a motorgeometry estimation based on nameplate data, presenting a temperature model to calculatea motor’s cross section temperature and, finally, proposed a stator current model using themagnetic field measurement.Market research has shown that a space for the Simotics Connect to thrive in mostdefinitely exists. The motor geometry estimation, that is based on preliminary electromagnetic sizing, creates a digital twin for the motor that has sufficient accuracy as a tool when calculatinge.g. temperature calculations but lacks accuracy for more advanced and sensitivecalculations e.g for magnetic flux density measurement usability. The temperature model that is presented shows great accuracy when calculating thecross section temperature in the stator but the accuracy decreases for the cross sectiontemperature in the rotor.A stator current model is proposed using a proportional relationship between themagnetic flux density and stator current. The results indicates a linear relationship, thoughusing the digital twin to calculate the proportional constant were concluded to not beaccurate enough.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University
Half of Americans take a prescription drug, medical devices are in broad use, and population coverage for many vaccines is over 90%. Nearly all medical products carry risk of adverse events (AEs), sometimes severe. However, pre- approval trials use small populations and exclude participants by specific criteria, making them insufficient to determine the risks of a product as used in the population. Existing post-marketing reporting systems are critical, but suffer from underreporting. Meanwhile, recent years have seen an explosion in adoption of Internet services and smartphones. MedWatcher is a new system that harnesses emerging technologies for pharmacovigilance in the general population. MedWatcher consists of two components, a text-processing module, MedWatcher Social, and a crowdsourcing module, MedWatcher Personal. With the natural language processing component, we acquire public data from the Internet, apply classification algorithms, and extract AE signals. With the crowdsourcing application, we provide software allowing consumers to submit AE reports directly. Our MedWatcher Social algorithm for identifying symptoms performs with 77% precision and 88% recall on a sample of Twitter posts. Our machine learning algorithm for identifying AE-related posts performs with 68% precision and 89% recall on a labeled Twitter corpus. For zolpidem tartrate, certolizumab pegol, and dimethyl fumarate, we compared AE profiles from Twitter with reports from the FDA spontaneous reporting system. We find some concordance (Spearman's rho= 0.85, 0.77, 0.82, respectively, for symptoms at MedDRA System Organ Class level). Where the sources differ, milder effects are overrepresented in Twitter. We also compared post-marketing profiles with trial results and found little concordance. MedWatcher Personal saw substantial user adoption, receiving 550 AE reports in a one-year period, including over 400 for one device, Essure. We categorized 400 Essure reports by symptom, compared them to 129 reports from the FDA spontaneous reporting system, and found high concordance (rho = 0.65) using MedDRA Preferred Term granularity. We also compared Essure Twitter posts with MedWatcher and FDA reports, and found rho= 0.25 and 0.31 respectively. MedWatcher represents a novel pharmacoepidemiology surveillance informatics system; our analysis is the first to compare AEs across social media, direct reporting, FDA spontaneous reports, and pre-approval trials.
