Annotation:

The paper discusses the technology of psychological assistance to teachers based on the principles of the reflective-activity approach (RAA). This assistance is aimed at supporting teachers in situations where they encounter difficulties in the classroom and can help prevent professional burnout and quitting in young teachers. Five principles of counseling are described: cooperating, providing positive feedback, working in the zone of proximal development (ZPD), showing empathy and validating difficulties, and organizing reflection as the main tool of assistance. The following modes of counseling are considered: observation of the lesson, participation in the lesson as an assistant, co-teacher or student, reflection of audio and video recordings of the lesson. The technology of lesson reflection, applicable for each of the modes, is considered in detail. This assistance can have a certain psychotherapeutic effect and contributes to the teacher’s personal and professional development.

Outcome following accidental injury, including return to work, can be impeded by any psychological sequelae that persists beyond the acute phase of recovery. Vocational counselors, as for rehabilitation practitioners in general, must therefore be proficient in identifying any-post-trauma psychological difficulties, able to determine their basis and significance, and either successfully treat or refer for treatment. Two cases are presented within the context of the trauma literature that indicate the necessity of proactively providing intervention as a component of the process of rehabilitation following injury, at least in some cases. In so doing, it is hoped that any detrimental effects that traumatic component of being injured have will be reduced.

The article is devoted to comparison of internal counseling parents of children with disabilities with Internet consultation in "offline" form. Examines the practical experience of providing remote psychological assistance, the main difficulties and the advantages of this type of counseling. The most common categories of needs of parents, allowing to make conclusions about what motivates them to receive psychological assistance. The article emphasizes that, despite the limitations of online counseling, this form of psychological assistance must be present on the market of advisory services. The answers on the questions in "offline" form ensure the quick and easy access to information, what undoubtedly need parents who are raising children with disabilities.

The research of students adapting to university life, difficulties in coping with the academic demands, and personal problems students face during their study is important for a better understanding of their needs in order to prevent possible mental health problems in the student population and increase the overall quality of study. When researching the difficulties that students face, one of the important factors to be taken into account is the type of study, for instance whether they study full or part time. Since nursing students represent the largest student population at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb, Croatia, we investigated the differences in the perceived difficulties during studying between full-time undergraduate nursing students and part-time specialist graduate nursing students, most of whom already work as professional nurses. In a sample of 231 participants, there were 143 undergraduate students with the average age of 26.38 years (90.2% females) and 88 specialist graduate students with the average age of 37.52 years (95.5% females). We examined the frequency of 62 difficulties that students may encounter during their study using a survey by the Student Counselling Centre at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. On average, nursing students perceived 12 difficulties. The most frequent difficulties all students struggle with are nervousness or tension, financial problems, fear of failure, inefficient time management, insecurity, and changes in eating habits. There is no significant difference in the total frequency of perceived difficulties between undergraduate and graduate students but we found significant differences between these two groups in the number of students who encountered particular difficulties regarding 13 issues. Undergraduate students face problems with roommates and problems in communication with professors more often than graduate students, while graduate students struggle the most with financial problems and adapting to the study regime. When faced with problems, 65.4% of all students would seek free psychological counselling. Graduate students and students who perceive more difficulties are more willing to seek psychological support.

The article considers one of the important directions of the practical psychologist-teacher in residential institutions - psychological counseling, the problem of psychological counseling of boarding school students, specific features of counseling by a teacher-psychologist, features of the consultant's interaction with boarding school students, the content of the motivational and need-based sphere of students at all stages of their stay in this institution: during the period of adaptation of students, correction, and training, as well as during their preparation for new living conditions and practical life after graduation, a teenager, getting into the new environment of a residential institution, it faces a lot of complex problems, it has questions about almost all vital situations: family and household, material, interpersonal, labor, legal, and so on. In the case of solving any problem situations, the level of anxiety increases in the pupils, on the basis of which neurotic states can develop, psychological overstrain, which manifests itself in numerous conflicts. To prevent them objectively and to resolve any contradictions in each residential institution psychologists-teachers must be organized counseling on topical issues of activity, relations and communication between pupils, special attention in the process of psychological counseling is given to the subject of "works" adviser: behaviour, feelings and experiences of pupils, and lists in detail the difficulties and errors made by the educational psychologist in the process of psychological counseling.

Introduction: With the advent of Covid-19, Italian university students were overwhelmed by fear of the pandemic and the social restrictions of the lockdown phase, with all didactic activity provided online. These stress factors caused people to experience psychological problems and/or the aggravation of pre-existing mental symptomatology. Psychological support is, therefore, important for the university-student population. Aims: (1) Analyzing the psychological difficulties and mental problems relative to lockdown from Covid-19 of students who asked for help from the Center of Psychological Counseling of the University of Salerno. (2) Describing the online services of the university’s psychological counseling treatment. Participants: 266 university students, but only 49 were undergoing psychological treatment during the Covid-19 lockdown at the center. Methods: (1) Semistructured interview; (2) Questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic information and ad hoc questions; and (3) Scl-90-r test. Results and Conclusions: Aim 1: The main results highlight high levels of anxiety and stress, concentration disorders, and psychosomatization. In several cases, there was a reactivation of previous traumas and sleep was found qualitatively compromised. Aim 2: Counseling services included telephone listening activities, online psychological interviews, psychoeducational groups for interventions of anxiety management, and workshops on study methods conducted in small groups. The online counseling intervention, in times of emergency, increased the resilience and identified any psychological problems in order to implement timely management.

AbstractIntroduction:A large number of firefighters retired after 11 September 2001. These retirees were confronted with multiple challenges, including grief, trauma- related physical injuries and psychological distress, difficulties related to the transition of their roles, and deterioration of social support.Objective:The Fire Department of NewYork (FDNY) Counseling Service Unit's “Stay Connected” Program designed and implemented after 11 September 2001 is described in this report. This unique program was designed to usea combination of peer outreach and professional counseling to address the mental health needs of retiring firefighters and their families.Methods:Descriptive information about the intervention program was gathered through semi-structured interviews with Counseling Service Unit staff. Client satisfaction surveys were collected during three six-week periods.Results:Quantitative data indicate that clients rated their overall satisfaction with the clerical and counseling staff a perfect 4 out of 4. The report of their overall satisfaction with the services also was nearly at ceiling (3.99 out 4).The perceived helpfulness of the services in resolving the problems experienced by the clients increased significantly over time.Qualitative data indicate that peer involvement and intensive community outreach, i.e., social events, wellness activities, and classes, were integral to the success of the intervention.Conclusions:This project provided valuable lessons about how to develop and implement a “culturally competent”intervention program for public safety workers retiring after a disaster. Creative, proactive, non-traditional outreach efforts and leveraging peers for credibility and support were particularly important.

This study aims to identify the psychosocial difficulties experienced by the healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study utilized a qualitative research method, and the data were collected in June 2020. The sample consisted of 31 healthcare professionals who provided care and treatment to individuals with suspected or confirmed coronavirus and agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected through 7 open-ended questions inquiring how healthcare professionals' work, family, and social lives as well as psychological status were affected by the pandemic. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The results revealed that while providing care and treatment, healthcare professionals had difficulties due to wearing protective equipment; they reportedly had problems in breathing or seeing the procedures they performed. It was also found that the participants experienced high levels of anxiety and various psychological, physical, social and familial problems, fatigue, insomnia, tension, nervousness, and loss of appetite. When healthcare professionals experience high levels of anxiety during the epidemic, showing symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, irritability and loss of appetite. They were very concerned about whether the patients would recover. It could be recommended to change the design of the equipment used by healthcare professionals. In addition, those who experienced problems with anxiety were informed about how to access psychological counseling services.

This research aims to watch the extent of guidance and counseling teacher services in improving student learning achievement shape Islamic morals on students. This research approach is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data source of this research was through the assistance and role of the Guidance and Counseling teacher to 88 students who were sampled. Data collection instruments were carried out by interview and questionnaire. The collected data is then collected, analyzed and interpreted into a whole new concept and also fres. The result of the research is the role of the guidance teacher has included a good classification. But there are still several factors that cause students to experience learning difficulties, for example, factors from within the individual consisting of physiological and psychological factors. Physiological factors are physical conditions and the five senses. While psychological factors, namely talent, interest, intelligence, achievement motivation and cognitive abilities. While the Guidance and Counseling teacher strategy in improving student learning achievement, for example, is correlating between the Guidance and Counseling teacher with parents or homeroom teachers who know the learners' personalities in depth to better know what problems have occurred.

The conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to difficulties in teaching students majoring in psychology, and the need to develop recommendations for universities to improve the system of distance learning at higher education institutions. Training of practical psychologists requires mandatory full-time participation in sessions of psychological counseling, passing supervision, familiarization with the leading areas of psychological counseling and psychotherapy, psychodiagnostics, and psychocorrective measures. These aspects are complicated by the restrictions caused by the pandemic, which complicates also the subsequent internship based on psychological centers, and the need to conduct practical training courses in a remote format. The purpose of the present research is to identify opportunities to improve the efficiency of distance learning for students majoring in psychology as well as university teachers in the context of the pandemic. The developed recommendations will be useful for improving the learning process of students of psychological specialties at higher education institutions. The proposed recommendations concern changes in the schedule of the university curriculum, and providing qualified support to teachers and students from the university’s psychological service and administration, implementing master classes for university practitioners, providing free access to video recordings of sessions of leading psychology consultants, as well as free practical online conferences and webinars of professional psychological and psychotherapeutic communities.

This doctoral thesis examines the relationship between childhood sexual abuse, a proposed risk factor for eating disorders, and the development of eating disorders in women living within a highly specialised environment. The first chapter critically reviews recent literature examining the complex relationship between childhood sexual abuse and eating disorders. Psychological difficulties that are involved in this relationship are explored, methodological limitations and recommendations for future research are also discussed. In addition implications for clinical practice are considered. The second chapter is an empirical study exploring eating distress in women with Borderline Personality Disorder detained in a medium secure setting. The population was assessed using a number of standardised assessments and following this, women displaying signs of eating distress were interviewed to ascertain their in-depth views on food, eating behaviours and their opinion of the support and treatment available. The final chapter provides a reflective account of the author‟s experiences of carrying out sensitive research with women in secure services.

The research object was the representations of psychologists about the difficulties of psychological counseling. The research subject was the content of representations about the difficulties of psychological counseling among practicing psychologists and students of psychological training areas. The master’s thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (80 sources), and an appendix, which includes forms of the applied techniques. The master’s thesis volume is 140 pages, which contain 11 figures and 47 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the degree of development of the problem, sets the goal and objectives of the research, defines the research object and subject, formulates the main and additional hypotheses, specifies the methods and empirical base, as well as the research stages, scientific novelty, the theoretical and practical significance of the work. The first chapter includes a review of foreign and domestic literature on the subject of the difficulties of psychological counseling. The sections devoted to the peculiar features of the client and the characteristics of the consultant are presented. The conclusions of the first chapter represent the results of the research of the theoretical material. The second chapter is devoted to the research empirical part. It contains the description of the organization and methods of the conducted research and the results obtained by all the techniques used: the method of interviewing experts; the method of semantic differential; the method of unfinished sentences; the method of self-assessment of emotional and personal well-being by L.V. Karapetyan, G.A. Glotova; the method for diagnosing emotional intelligence by N. Hall; the method of diagnosis of the level of subjective control by E.F. Bazhin, E.A. Golynkina, L.M. Etkind. The chapter presents a descriptive, comparative, and correlation analysis of the research results, as well as a content analysis of the research results under the method of unfinished sentences and the Fisher angular transformation. The conclusion summarizes the results of the research theoretical and empirical parts, as well as the findings on the hypotheses put forward.

This thesis consists of three sections: a systematic review, an empirical paper and the appendices, which are intended to support the empirical paper. The two papers are intended for publication in different journals and are written in the style required by those journals. Thesis Overview In the UK, a military veteran is defined by the government as anyone who has served in the armed forces for at least one day; they will simply be referred to as veterans from here on. The mental health of veterans is very much in the public awareness, especially due to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Research dedicated to this area has mostly used quantitative methodologies, focused on Post-traumatic stress disorder and has been conducted in the United States. The research, and the media, has a tendency to give a more negative overview of veteran’s mental health, and their health outcomes, by emphasising such difficulties as substance misuse and offending behaviour. Therefore the aim of this thesis was to start to fill in the gaps. This was achieved by reviewing and adopting qualitative methodologies and involving British veterans. The research aimed to explore the possibility of positive change after military service, and veterans own views on how they experience and cope with psychological difficulties. By knowing more about veterans’ experiences, from veterans’ themselves, we will be more able to inform services and tailor the support to improve their outcomes and enhance their well-being. The term Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is relatively new, but the concept of growth out of adversity dates back to at least the 1960s. PTG was introduced by Tedeschi and Calhoun to describe positive psychological change resulting from experiencing traumatic events. It is conceptualised as a long-term coping strategy for ongoing stress following adversity (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). Positive growth has been indicated in the experiences of people after a range of traumatic events but the types and levels of trauma experienced by military personnel are unique. This is because they may endure multiple and chronic trauma, they have voluntarily put themselves in harm’s way and they could experience combat exposure both as victim and perpetrator (Linley & Joseph, 2004; Larner & Blow, 2011; Larner, 2013). Research suggesting that veterans can experience PTG has tended to focus on quantitative aspects of prevalence and influential factors, with no qualitative review of how veterans actually experience PTG. Chapter one of this thesis is a systematic review of the qualitative literature exploring veterans’ subjective experiences of PTG after military service. It aims to highlight those areas more prone to growth and to help inform interventions that may facilitate this process. To enable us to inform interventions to promote positive change, it is important to know how veterans are coping with psychological difficulties from their own perspective. Chapter two of this thesis is an empirical study that explored the way veterans from the North West of England, who had accessed a veterans’ psychology service, are coping with psychological difficulties. Q Methodology (Stephenson, 1935) was used to provide a systematic and non-threatening way to collect a large range of subjective viewpoints. The paper discusses the clinical implications of the findings and recommendations for future research within the context of the strengths and limitations of the study. It is hoped the findings will increase the awareness of this complex area, highlight the need for more research and aid the development of more targeted interventions focused on those more adaptive and growth promoting coping processes.

Psychological safety is a concept mentioned throughout the literature as a necessary component in the process of change in group counseling. Despite its frequent mention, no study has examined the characteristics of psychological safety. The purpose of this study was to lay the groundwork for a definition of the concept of psychological safety using self reports of group leaders and group members on a constructed Likert format psychological safety questionnaire of three attributional categories: self, other members, and leader. The study utilized group members (n = 44) and group leaders (n = 4) participating in laboratory groups as a part of a counseling related masters curriculum. The questionnaires were filled out on the first, eighth (middle), and fourteenth (last) sessions. Hierarchies for characteristics and attribution were constructed by using a summing procedure of the Likert responses. Results on the attribution of psychological safety by group members showed a consistent pattern over the three time measures. Group members reported leaders as the most attributed to facilitating psychological safety, other members as second, and self as least attributed to facilitate psychological safety. Group leaders showed no apparent agreement between groups, but each group leader attributed psychological safety consistently over time within one's own group. Results on the characteristics of psychological safety yielded a comprehensive list of characteristics, arranged in hierarchical format, as reported by both group members and leaders. Results indicated that psychological safety has some core concepts in each of the attributional categories. For group members, the characteristics of "warmth and support" and "active listening" were stable across every attributional category and time measure. For group leaders, "self disclosing feelings", "warmth and support", and "responding in an emotional, feeling manner" were reported in every time measure and attributional category. Characteristics that had a negative effect on psychological safety and recommendations for future research were also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of psychosocial factors and psychological flexibility on rehabilitation protocol adherence in a sample of injured collegiate athletes. Self-report measures were given to injured athletes prior to the outset of a physical rehabilitation protocol, and a measure of rehabilitation adherence for each athlete was completed by the Chief Athletic Trainer upon the completion of rehabilitation. Logistic regression analyses with bootstrapping were conducted to determine if broad psychosocial factors such as those indicated within the BBHI – 2, and level of psychological flexibility as measured by the AAQ – 2 would significantly predict engagement and adherence to a rehabilitation protocol. The AAQ – 2 was found to significantly contribute to the overall logistic regression model. This measure would give medical providers a way to quickly and quantitatively assess for the presence of potentially problematic behavioral responding that has been demonstrated to negatively impact the course of rehabilitation.

Existing studies suggest that the high rates of mental health problems among second generation or UK born Asians are due to "culture conflict", that is, the idea that individuals are stuck between two incompatible cultures. The aim of this study was to explore how the experience of being raised in both Asian and native British culture impacts upon the mental health of second generation Asian women. Thirty women participated in this study and were categorised into two groups (clinical vs. non-clinical) according to 'caseness', which was determined on the basis of a screening questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ- 12; Goldberg, 1972). A more detailed psychological profile of participants was provided using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis and Melisaratos, 1983). These groups were compared on a range of identity parameters drawn from Identity Structure Analysis (ISA; Weinreich, 1979,1980), which is a meta-theoretical framework designed to investigate cultural identity and acculturation. The results indicated that both the clinical and non-clinical groups identified closely with Asian and native British culture, which suggests that both groups viewed themselves as being bicultural. There were no differences between the groups in the extent to which they wished to dissociate from the values of their parents and representatives of Asian culture. The clinical group were significantly more likely to view fathers and first generation Asian females as having some qualities which they identified with and some which they wished to dissociate from, thereby creating a conflictual state (identification conflicts), than the non-clinical group. When these identification conflicts were considered across a range of significant others (identity diffusion), there was no difference between the groups. Identity diffusion was positively correlated with some of the BSI symptom dimensions for the clinical group and negatively correlated for the non-clinical group. The results imply that even women who consider themselves to be bicultural experience psychological distress, which is in contrast with much of the literature. The results also suggest that potential psychological stressors include the experience of integrating the conflicting demands of home and wider society. When identifications with a range of significant others were highly conflictual in nature this was associated with a negative effect on one's sense of well-being, however when this was experienced to a milder degree it appeared to serve as a trigger for identity development.

In the practice of psychological counselling for clients, there are often socio-psychological difficulties that frustrate the process and make it impossible for the parties to achieve their goals. Misunderstanding, discrepancies, bad relations between the parties, distrust for each other, and other difficulties originate directly in situations of interaction between psychological counselors and their clients. The aforementioned difficulties require special analysis. This constitutes the main goal and novelty of the present study. Psychological counseling is deemed as an interaction, as actions of parties towards each other, underpinned by unity of the subject, place, and time of their activity. A psychological counselor and each of their clients undertake some actions to solve a target goal, including in situations of immediate interaction. As a result, each party sets and realises certain goals, is motivated by certain motives, is active, etc. They shall solve a target goal by mutual efforts. The article contains a summary on personal interaction situations, and on social-psychological phenomena that are generated by personalities in counselling situations. The article describes the essence, main phases and social-psychological difficulties of the interaction of psychological counselors and their clients. The following main methods selected for studying social-psychological difficulties of counseling interaction: diagnostic interview, questionnaire, final reports upon client checkups, expert evaluation. The findings confirmed the hypothesis of negative socio-psychological phenomena acting as a form of difficulty upsetting the counsellor-client interaction. The study has provided an opportunity to broaden the understanding of the content and the socio-psychological challenges of psychological counselling.

"Studies have shown that women facing infertility and undergoing the IVF process generally belong to the mentally healthy group of the population. However, their stress level and emotional reactions vary significantly. Besides, there are women who report higher anxiety and/or depression levels up to six months after an (unsuccessful) IVF process. The aim of this study is to determine the perception of the infertility experience and the functioning of domains particularly affected by overcoming infertility through IVF. Fourteen women were excluded from the study sample due to their secondary infertility: 9 women had already had a child conceived though IVF and 5 had conceived naturally – these respondents have a successful experience of overcoming infertility, as they do not face the possibility of remaining involuntarily childless. The final sample was comprised of 149 women, 23 to 45 years of age (M=35,50, SD=4,48). For 83,9% of the women, the ongoing IVF procedure was the first (38,3), the second (25,5) or the third (20,1) attempt, while the rest of respondents were going though IVF for the fourth to the eighth time. Infertility is considered the worst experience of their life by 67,8% of the respondents. 95,3% of the respondents in the study want psychological counseling, which is not an integral part of the IVF process in Serbia and thus not covered by the national health insurance. The “Fertility quality of Life” (FertiQoL; Boivin, Takefman and Braverman, 2011) Questionnaire was used for the assessment of quality of life. A one sample t-test shows statistically significant differences in experiencing difficulties in the observed domains. The respondents have the lowest scores on the Emotional subscale, meaning that the most pronounced feature is the impact of negative emotions (e.g., jealousy and resentment, sadness, depression) on quality of life. The score on the Social subscale is highest, which means that social interactions have not significantly been affected by fertility problems. In conclusion, the infertility experience is highly stressful for a significant number of women and they are in need of psychological support, especially for overcoming negative emotions. This can be done by defining a new way of life filled with contentment, one that is in accordance with their value systems, despite their experience of infertility."

In the practice of a teacher-psychologist at the School of Distance Education, the game “Sign me up as an astronaut”, developed by the author, was tested, aimed at developing the skills of social and psychological interaction in younger adolescents with disabilities through the awareness and strengthening of personal resources by means of game psychocorrection. The specifics of the work of a psychologist at the School of Distance Education are determined by the following circumstances: - students have a severe disability and the corresponding psychophysical characteristics: instability of the emotional-volitional sphere, lack of motivation, severe physical and mental fatigue, low level of social skills, etc. - the use of distance educational technologies in psychocorrectional work; - lack of methodological recommendations for psychocorrectional work in conditions of distance technologies with school-age children. Such recommendations are available mainly for adults, they relate to the educational process, but they do not cover the correctional process. There is enough scientific and methodological literature on psychological and pedagogical correction, which is the basis for ensuring the work of a practicing psychologist, but there are difficulties in transferring these techniques, games, etc. - to the remote mode of correctional and developmental work, especially in the form of group work. During the game, various social and psychological situations are solved, which are selected strictly according to the characteristics of the social experience of the participants.

The workshop comprises seven subject areas that can be flexibly put together as required: theoretical basics and definitions of social-emotional competence, the basics of psychological assessment, potential difficulties in its use, usage of the self-rating scale, the situational judgment test, the observer-rating scale, and objective observation of behaviour. The general aim of this workshop is to learn how to use and apply the assessment tools in practical settings.
