ABSTRACT Picornavirus RNA replication requires the formation of replication complexes (RCs) consisting of virus-induced vesicles associated with viral nonstructural proteins and RNA. Brefeldin A (BFA) has been shown to strongly inhibit RNA replication of poliovirus but not of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV). Here, we demonstrate that the replication of parechovirus 1 (ParV1) is partly resistant to BFA, whereas echovirus 11 (EV11) replication is strongly inhibited. Since BFA inhibits COPI-dependent steps in endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi transport, we tested a hypothesis that different picornaviruses may have differential requirements for COPI in the formation of their RCs. Using immunofluorescence and cryo-immunoelectron microscopy we examined the association of a COPI component, β-COP, with the RCs of EMCV, ParV1, and EV11. EMCV RCs did not contain β-COP. In contrast, β-COP appeared to be specifically distributed to the RCs of EV11. In ParV1-infected cells β-COP was largely dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, with some being present in the RCs. These results suggest that there are differences in the involvement of COPI in the formation of the RCs of various picornaviruses, corresponding to their differential sensitivity to BFA. EMCV RCs are likely to be formed immediately after vesicle budding from the ER, prior to COPI association with membranes. ParV1 RCs are formed from COPI-containing membranes but COPI is unlikely to be directly involved in their formation, whereas formation of EV11 RCs appears to be dependent on COPI association with membranes.

The renin–angiotensin system (RAS) controls not only systemic functions, such as blood pressure, but also local tissue-specific events. Previous studies have shown that angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R) and type 2 (AT2R), two RAS components, are expressed in chondrocytes. However, the angiotensin II (ANG II) effects exerted through these receptors on chondrocyte metabolism are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of ANG II and AT1R blockade on chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation. Firstly, we observed that ANG II significantly suppressed cell proliferation and glycosaminoglycan content in rat chondrocytic RCS cells. Additionally, ANG II decreased CCN2, which is an anabolic factor for chondrocytes, via increased MMP9. In Agtr1a-deficient RCS cells generated by the CRISPR-Cas9 system, Ccn2 and Aggrecan (Acan) expression increased. Losartan, an AT1R antagonist, blocked the ANG II-induced decrease in CCN2 production and Acan expression in RCS cells. These findings suggest that AT1R blockade reduces ANG II-induced chondrocyte degeneration. Interestingly, AT1R-positive cells, which were localized on the surface of the articular cartilage of 7-month-old mice expanded throughout the articular cartilage with aging. These findings suggest that ANG II regulates age-related cartilage degeneration through the ANG II–AT1R axis.

This study examined the differential diagnostic utility of the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical Scales (RCS) and Clinical Scales (CS) in detecting a complex multivariate clinical phenomenon: that is, comorbid Axis-II status in two matched samples of inpatients. Psychiatric inpatients diagnosed with either substance use disorder (n = 43) or major depression (n = 49) were matched on age, sex, and clinical setting, and compared with patients with the same Axis-I disorder and a comorbid personality disorder. Presence or absence of a comorbid personality disorder was chosen to provide a potent test of the differential diagnostic utility of the RCS versus CS when using a highly complex, multivariate criterion variable. Using hierarchical logistic regression analyses, the RCS consistently demonstrated higher diagnostic utility. Moreover, the RCS profiles were significantly more focused and more readily interpretable, relative to the CS profiles that were remarkably similar across disorders. These findings provide further support for the diagnostic and clinical utility of the RCS.

An efficient Radar Cross Section (RCS) gradient evaluation method based on the adjoint method is presented. The Method of Moments is employed to solve the Combined Field Integral Equation (CFIE) and the corresponding derivatives computing routines are generated by the program transformation Automatic Differentiation (AD) technique. The differential code is developed using three kinds of AD mode: tangent mode, multidirectional tangent mode, and adjoint mode. The differential code in adjoint mode is modified and optimized by changing the “two-sweeps” architecture into the “inner-loop two-sweeps” architecture. Their efficiency and memory consumption are tested and the differential code using modified adjoint mode demonstrates the great advantages in both efficiency and memory consumption. A gradient-based shape optimization design method is established using the adjoint method and the mechanism of RCS reduction is studied. The results show that the sharp leading can avoid the specular back-scattering and the undulations of the surface could change the phases which result in a further RCS reduction.

This study examines whether Differential Object Marking (DOM) realization and word order in relative clauses (RCs) in Spanish affect processing and interpretation among monolinguals and highly proficient Catalan–Spanish bilinguals. RCs are parallel in Catalan and Spanish, but DOM is much more restricted in Catalan than in Spanish, and, interestingly, the distinction between subject and object RCs relies mainly on the presence/absence of DOM. To examine DOM optionality, we concentrate on the top portion of the animacy scale and test the human/non-human contrast. Exploring these two populations allows us to test whether they resort to different strategies for the following three reasons: (1) bilingualism places an increased burden on memory processes); (2) the partial overlap between both DOM systems might lead to the influence from Catalan into Spanish); and (3) optionality has been proposed to characterize bilingual grammars). Findings from a word-by-word non-cumulative self-paced reading task showed that DOM modulates RC processing. With [+human] obligatorily marked objects, both monolinguals and bilinguals read subject RCs faster than object RCs, suggesting a strategy favoring subject RCs. However, monolinguals solved the interpretation early while processing but bilinguals, despite the more restricted DOM character of Catalan, are sensitive to DOM albeit displaying delayed spill-over effects. With [−human] optionally marked objects, bilinguals performed faster than monolinguals. We suggest that the uneven experience with DOM in Catalan, particularly with the non-standard variety that frequently displays DOM and that our bilinguals also speak in everyday conversations, facilitates bilinguals’ adaptation to the optional marking of non-human objects in Spanish, much in the same manner that they accommodate the presence or absence of DOM with both human and non-human objects in other native language.

Abstract Early heritage bilinguals have been repeatedly found to differ from late bilinguals and from monolinguals (e.g., Montrul, 2008, 2011). In the realm of Spanish Differential Object Marking (DOM), both early heritage bilinguals (Montrul et al., 2015) and late bilinguals (e.g., Bowles & Montrul, 2008; Guijarro-Fuentes, 2012) exhibit difficulties. DOM in a complex structure such as relative clauses (RCs) provides an ideal setting to differentiate early from late bilinguals, but it has only been explored offline (Perpiñán & Moreno-Villar, 2013). This study fills this gap by examining the role of word order (SVO, OSV, OVS), optionality (obligatory vs. optional contexts), and saliency (bound vs. unbound morphology) on the processing of DOM in embedded RCs in Spanish, by Spanish monolinguals, and advanced early heritage and late bilinguals of Spanish. The results of a word-by-word non-cumulative self-paced reading task revealed that all participants were more accurate but were slower in subject than object RCs, and in OSV than OVS RCs. Slower RTs in subject RCs were due to the presence of DOM, and in OSV to interpreting OVS as SVO. Also, all participants were both more accurate as well as faster in obligatory than optional DOM, unbound than bound morphology, and masculine than feminine RC NPs. These findings reveal that processing difficulties in RCs result from the interaction of word order and DOM, and that processing DOM depends on both salience and, to a lesser extent, gender. Finally, this study shows that early heritage bilinguals are closer to monolinguals than late bilinguals in terms of morphosyntactic processing patterns.

A physical optics based method is presented for calculation of monostatic Radar Cross-Section (RCS) of a shell-shaped projectile. The projectile is modeled using differential geometry. The paper presents a detailed analysis procedure for RCS formulation using physical optics (PO) method. The shortcomings of the PO method in predicting accurate surface current density near the shadow boundaries are highlighted. A Fourier transform-based filtering method is proposed to remove the discontinuities in the approximated surface current density. The modified current density is used to formulate the scattered field and RCS. Numerical results are presented comparing the proposed method with conventional PO method. The results are also compared with published results of similar objects and found to be in good agreement.

Relatively few attempts have been made to systematically examine the processes responsible for the ameliorative effects of response-contingent stimulation (RCS) on stuttering. It was hypothesized that the reductions in stuttering that frequently accompany RCS are the result of the stutterer being encouraged to access extant fluent speech that may not be fully evident during "contingency-free" (CF) conditions. A preliminary analysis of the hypothesis was conducted by monitoring RCS and CF stuttering frequency and speaking rate in 20 adult stutterers before, during, and after a program of fluency training. Subjects were divided into "high" and "low" responders on the basis of their baseline response to the RCS procedure of time-out from speaking, after which they participated in a 32-hour program of fluency training aimed at minimizing stuttering. After showing a degree of relapse during a subsequent 6-mon follow-up, high and low responders were found to be equally affected by time-out. This result contrasted the differential response shown by the two groups during the baseline phase, and is consistent with the hypothesis that improvements in fluency during RCS may occur when stutterers access extant fluent speech that is not otherwise being fully utilized.

The context of this thesis is primarily centered around UHF RFID scenarios which involve a large number of tags randomly distributed and confined in an electrically reduced volume. The proximity of the radiating elements would result in significant electromagnetic coupling between the tag antennas, impacting the communication link between the reader and the tags. Consequently, the key performance indicators of the system such as read-range and read-rate get degraded. This research work presents a performance analysis of such an RFID system by including statistical aspects. To this aim, a model for the forward and reverse links including coupling effects between the tags is presented, which is validated by electromagnetic simulations and measurements. Prior to delving into the analysis involving a set of tags, a comprehensive characterization of the home-made RFID tag integrated with a Higgs-9 chip which is used in the study is performed. The antenna impedance is simulated and measured, while the nonlinear chip impedance is characterized by an impedance analyzer. The whole tag composed of the home-made antenna and the chip is tested under the RFID protocols. Considering the complexity of the problem at hand, the set of RFID tags under study is also modeled by a set of loaded dipoles in order to simplify their electromagnetic model provided that a high correlation between their behaviour could be proved. At this stage, the monostatic RCS is studied with an objective of highlighting the degradation in the response of an isolated tag to that of the same tag while surrounded by other tags. The coupling effects on the impedance and the radiation pattern of a tag are thus included in this monostatic RCS response. Afterwards, the forward link is analyzed in terms of the power absorbed by the chip and the maximum read-range of an interrogated tag while being surrounded by neighboring loaded tags. Interestingly a clear correlation is observed between the power absorbed by the chip obtained by simulation and the maximum read-range which is obtained by simulation and measured under RFID protocol. Multiple random configurations of tags have been tested and as a result of this part, a circuit-level observable is correlated to a direct system-level observable. The performance degradation due to coupling in the reverse link is analyzed in terms of the differential RCS, as it is indicative of the modulation depth from the tag. The differential RCS is calculated using the estimated reflection coefficients of the surrounded tag for two different load levels and is also measured directly under RFID protocol. As the last part, this research work takes into account the impact of nonlinear evolution of the complex chip impedance, along with coupling effects in the reverse link. Knowing that the chip impedance is a function of the input power, a mapping procedure is presented for the chip impedance estimation. The coupling model provides the power delivered to the chip, which is then mapped to obtain the nonlinear chip impedance of each tag in a set of randomly distributed tags. The inferences drawn from this work when combined with relevant statistical data could be used by RFID design engineers to assess the performance of an RFID scenario while being exposed to both mutual coupling and nonlinearities

Restless legs syndrome (RLS)/Willis–Ekbom disease (WED), is a common neurological disorder characterized by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs, with an urge to move. The general population prevalence has been estimated at approximately 5%. In 1995, the International RLS/WED Study Group established four clinical criteria for RLS/WED diagnosis, and in 2012 introduced a fifth (that symptoms are not due to another medical or behavioral condition) to improve differential diagnosis. Periodic leg movements causing sleep fragmentation may be observed in almost 80% of RLS/WED patients. Genetics, central nervous system dopamine dysregulation, and brain iron deficiency seem to be the primary involved factors, but peripheral phenomena may also contribute to the pathophysiology. Several medications have demonstrated efficacy in treating RLS/WED, including dopaminergic agents, alpha-2-delta ligands, and opioids. Pharmacological therapy should be limited to those patients who suffer from clinically relevant symptoms with impaired sleep quality or quality of life.

This handbook provides a practical approach to the evaluation, differential diagnosis, and management of common medical and surgical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, acute respiratory failure, seizures, and hemorrhagic shock occurring in hospitalized patients. Less common and special circumstances such as pediatric, obstetric, oncologic, neurologic, and behavioral emergencies as well as palliative care for terminally ill patients encountered in the context of rapid response team (RRT) events are also discussed. An overview of commonly performed bedside emergency procedures by rapid response team members complements the clinical resources that may need to be brought to bear during the course of the rapid response team event. Finally, an overview of organization, leadership, communication, quality, and patient safety surrounding rapid response team events is provided. This book is written with medical students, junior physicians, and nursing staff in mind working in both academic and community hospital settings. Both a novice and an experienced healthcare provider involved in a rapid response system (RRS) will find this handbook to be a valuable supplement to the clinical experiences gained through active engagement in the system. Hospital administrators and senior management staff will also find this book to be useful in the evaluation of quality and performance of the rapid response system, management of staff attitudes and behavior, performance of peer review, care for second victims, and implementation of countermeasures for patient safety problems discovered in the course of rapid response system reviews.

AbstractIn this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of four land-deformation measurement techniques for monitoring slow-moving landslides along a high-risk section of the national railway corridor traversing the Thompson River valley, British Columbia, Canada. The geomorphically active North Slide acts as an ideal field laboratory for testing and evaluating novel monitoring techniques and methods. We compare differential processing of Structure from Motion (SfM) products such as point-cloud elevation models and orthophotos derived from Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), along with satellite based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) deformation measurements derived from RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM). These results are ground-truthed with periodic real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements. We evaluate point-cloud comparison techniques, including the multi-scale model-to-model cloud comparison (M3C2) algorithm and digital ortho image correlation techniques. Multi-temporal RCM InSAR deformation measurements are processed using a semi-automated processing system for interferogram generation and unwrapping. Manual processing of small baseline subsets (SBAS) leads to the recovery of 1-dimensional line-of-sight (LoS) and 2-dimensional deformation measurements. Lastly, we discuss the strengths and limitations of these techniques, considerations for interpreting their outputs, and considerations for direct comparisons between InSAR, RPAS and RTK-GNSS deformation measurements.

Optimal trim was investigated for a lift-offset coaxial helicopter in high speed flight. An RCAS model of the XH-59 Advancing Blade Concept demonstrator aircraft was developed for the study and flight test trim conditions at 250 kts were used for baseline trim. The effects of varying redundant controls including rotor speed, auxiliary thrust, and differential lateral pitch were examined by trimming the aircraft at a variety of different trim states. Low power and low vibration trim states were identified and the performance and vibratory loads of these trim points were compared to the baseline trim condition. Reduction in power requirements of 17% were observed for a reduction in rotor speed combined with reduced differential lateral pitch. Power savings came in part from rotor slowing and the corresponding re-distributing of rotor lift and avoiding drag divergence at the advancing blade tips. The optimized trim state also resulted in an aft tilt of the tip path plane and upwash through the rotor disk, further decreasing main rotor power. Decreasing the blade pitch on the retreating side through a reduction in differential lateral pitch resulted in reduction of reverse flow drag. Rotor slowing was limited to 70% of the nominal RPM because of resonance of the rotor first flap and chordwise modes at the 2/rev frequency. Further reductions in rotor speed produced a small reduction in power required but large increases in vibratory loads.

A lift-offset coaxial helicopter is simulated using the Rotorcraft Comprehensive Analysis System (RCAS) at a speed of 230 kts. The XH-59 Advancing Blade Concept demonstrator aircraft is used for the simulation model. A variety of trim states are explored by varying vehicle pitch attitude and redundant controls, such as main rotor speed and differential lateral pitch. The performance, vibrations, and blade loads are compared for different trim states, notably, those states utilizing negative rotor power to drive the propulsor and states in which the rotor power is constrained to be non-negative. The optimal trim state for a system with a powered or free spinning rotor lies at about 3° pitch attitude, while the optimal trim state for a vehicle in which the rotor can extract power and direct it to the propulsor lies at 6-7° pitch attitude. With the aircraft operating at a high pitch attitude, the horizontal tail is able to provide a significant amount of the necessary aircraft lift, while the rotor can provide the longitudinal moment necessary for trim. The Blade loads and hub vibrations for the negative rotor power state are similar or less than for the marginally powered state.

Annotation:
The RCS flow measurement in PWRs is currently performed with a heat balance between primary and secondary systems: thus temperature heterogeneity impacts this measurement. In case of RCS flow shutdown (incident situation), a relative measurement of the RCS flow is monitored using an existing elbow tap. The goal of the present study is to assess the feasibility of using the existing plant elbow taps to accurately measure an absolute value of the RCS flow continuously and independently of the RCS temperature measurements. RCS flow is basically proportional to the square root of the differential pressure in the pipe elbow taps. Experiments on a scale model and sensitivity analyses with CFD simulations have been carried out and show that only few parameters have an influence on the proportionality coefficient. CFD is seen as able to predict this coefficient with an adequate accuracy. Potential applications of this method are RCS flow monitoring from start to full load after the change of primary coolant pumps or of steam generators.

Annotation:
The RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) is Canada's latest system of C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Earth observation satellites. The system of three satellites, spaced equally in a common orbit, allows for a rapid four-day repeat interval. The RCM has been designed with a selection of stripmap, spotlight, and ScanSAR beam modes which offer varied combinations of spatial resolution and coverage. Using Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) techniques, the growing archive of SAR data gathered by RCM can be used for change detection and ground deformation monitoring for diverse applications in Canada and around the world. In partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) has developed an automated system for generating standard and advanced deformation products and change detection from SAR data acquired by RCM and RADARSAT-2 satellites using DInSAR processing methodology. Using this system, this paper investigates four key interferometric properties of the RCM system which were not available on the RADARSAT-1 or RADARSAT-2 missions: The impact of the high temporal resolution of the four-day repeat cycle of the RCM on temporal decorrelation trends is tested and fitted against simple temporal decay models. The effect of the normalization and the precision of the radiometric calibration on interferometric spatial coherence is investigated. The performance of the RCM ScanSAR mode for wide area interferometric analysis is tested. The performance of the novel RCM Compact-polarization (CP) mode for interferometric analysis is also investigated.

Annotation:
Gender gaps in ?nancial literacy are pervasive and persistent. While most studies explore why women know less, these gaps might also re?ect differential behavior in providing responses in surveys. Women might be more likely to be uncertain, or men might be more likely to choose an answer when uncertain, while women might tend to opt for “I do not know”, leading to imprecise measures of the gender gap in ?nancial literacy. We test for the effectiveness of three interventions to reduce the frequency of “I do not know”, in a randomized control trial online survey administered to 6,000 participants. The standard survey, our control group, includes the possibility of answering “I do not know”. The three treatment arms exclude the “I do not know” answer, offer incentives for correct answers or inform survey takers of the existing gender gap in choosing “I do not know”. All interventions are very effective in reducing the frequency of “I do not know”. The information is most effective for women, while the incentives are most effective for men. As regards gender gaps, only the provision of information significantly reduces the gender gap in choosing “I do not know”, as well as the gender gap in ?nancial literacy.

Remote sensing using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers powerful methods for monitoring ground deformation from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Advanced analysis techniques such as Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), change detection, and Speckle Offset Tracking (SPO) provide sensitive measures of ground movement. With both the RADARSAT-2 and RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) SAR satellites, Canada has access to a significant catalogue of SAR data. To make use of this data, the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO) has developed an automated system for generating standard and advanced deformation products from SAR data using both DInSAR and SPO methods. This document provides a user guide for this automated processing system.

Reports, publications, papers, and databases were reviewed to better define risks and threats to plastic gas distribution piping. Failure modes were described for plastic PE piping with the most significant being slow crack growth (SCG). Short-term mechanical tests such as tensile, quick burst, melt index, and density tests did not show a correlation with a material's susceptibility to SCG failure. The bend-back test was able to visually identify 1971 low-ductile inner wall materials. PENT test failure times were reported for materials manufactured during the period1972-1985. The PENT test did not show correlations with the material's susceptibility to SCG failure for these materials. Life expectancy was determined to be a key measure of the susceptibility of PE gas pipe materials to SCG field failures. Long-term hydrostatic stress-rupture data combined with the Rate Process Method or with the Bi-Directional Shift Functions predicted the remaining life expectancy of several PE materials at 60F average field temperature under varying loading conditions. Data showed rock impingement loads and pipe squeeze-offs can result in the greatest reduction in remaining life expectancy. Lower operating field temperatures and pressures significantly increased the predicted remaining life expectancy of PE materials. Fifty-five PE pipe samples that failed in field service were examined in the laboratory to identify the root cause of the failures. Eight of the samples underwent in-depth analysis, which included density and melts index tests and differential scanning calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and microscopic examination of the fracture surfaces. The samples were combined with another set of additional data resulting in 45 material, 36 procedural, 12 quality control, and 7 miscellaneous failures. A separate categorization method attributed a total of 321 failures to their respective pipe/component, with most occurring at joints. RCP in large diameter PE materials was investigated through laboratory testing. Critical pressure was determined for 6 pipe materials. The critical temperature was determined for 3 materials.
