Annotation:
The article discusses didactic violin literature by violinist and pedagogue Dušan Vodišek. Covering the period between 1966 and 2016, his oeuvre represents a bridge between didactic violin literature of the previous century and contemporary didactic violin literature. Over these 50 years, he significantly enriched didactic violin literature in Slovenia with his works, which include a violin book for beginners, children’s compositions for violin and piano, youth compositions for violin and piano, compositions for chamber ensemble and string orchestra, and two textbooks on position changing. These materials provide original solutions to challenges concerning individual elements of violin playing and the musical development of students. Therefore, they also represent an important contribution to the development of violin pedagogy and violin playing in Slovenia.

Annotation:
The work is devoted to the development and rise of national pedagogical violin art of the period from L. Auer to Y. Yankelevich. The works of violin teachers themselves and their contemporaries of the 20th century (L. Auer, V. Grigoriev, L. Mordkovich, A. Yampolsky, Y. Yankelevich) and the latest research in the history of violin art and pedagogy are considered as scientific sources (I. Lezhnev, A. Misharin, A. Nurgayanov, E. Safonov, T. Sukhanov). Despite the sufficient consecration of various issues of the national violin school in the literature, the relevance of this topic is determined by the need to highlight the factors of the rise of the national violin school in general and to determine the characteristic methodic directions and pedagogical trends of the specified historical period in particular. The principles indicated by L. Auer, aimed at the devel-opment of an individual performing manner, and the interpretational direction in violin perfor-mance are developed and supplemented by his followers, among whom the activity of A. Yam-polsky was of fundamental importance. The development of a system of music education due to a well-built policy of the state and the activities of individuals and organizations, the mutual influ-ence of the tandem “composer – performer” also contributed to the growth of interest in the violin art. It is concluded that the close continuity of pedagogical, methodic and performing principles, combined with innovative teaching methods, led to the flourishing of the violin school, which was supported by state and close interaction between performers and composers.

Annotation:
From the middle of the eighteenth century, the use of left-hand pizzicato and harmonics began to become more common in violin playing. Over time, these techniques underwent substantial developments thanks to several different violinists, among others Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. These developments, however, have not been adequately investigated or documented, and in general, ignorance and misconceptions prevail regarding who contributed what, as well as to the significance of these individual contributions. This thesis attempts to present Ernst's contributions in this area, and also advance that his lack of adequate recognition is unfair. In order to do this, a more complete and chronologically accurate review of the development of left-hand pizzicato and harmonics from the beginning of their development has been drawn up. This has been done through critical reviews and comparisons of different contemporary sources such as musical journals, violin methods and musical scores. The conclusion has been drawn that Ernst contributed to the development of left-hand pizzicato and harmonics to a greater extent than has been adequately recognised. The importance of his role in this development is partially due to the number of his individual contributions, but primarily because he enabled the violin to play the role of several independent instruments played simultaneously in a more advanced fashion, which has arguably changed the outlook of the instrument.

This work aims to investigate technical and interpretative aspects present in orchestral violin excerpts and to study the potential of its use as a tool for the violinist`s development. In the first chapter, we broached the material survey, in which information was sought about violin orchestral excerpts, with respect both to its use in orchestral auditions as well as in the technical and stylistic aspects regarding their preparation and execution. In addition to usual academic material - such as dissertations, theses and articles - it has been found extensive reference in websites, blogs, video lessons and other means, with substantial content released on the Internet. The paper also presents the criteria that guided the choice of excerpts investigated in the following chapter. In the second chapter technical and interpretative aspects of each significant excerpt chosen are scrutinized and suggestions are made for possible interpretative approaches to these excerpts. Finally, in the third chapter, we try to establish a parallel between aspects present in the traditional violin repertoire and orchestral excerpts investigated. The association between the material studied in Chapter 2 and works such as sonatas and concerts, usually studied by violinists, are rich and it highlights the exploration of possibilities of orchestral excerpts as a mean of learning the instrument. This study is aimed at violin students at the undergraduate level and, more broadly, for violinists who are interested in delving into the subject of orchestral excerpts for violin, including as support for preparation for orchestral auditions.

Van, der Linde Annien. „The rise and development of electric bowed instrument groups in South Africa“. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80216.

Thesis (MMus)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the rise and development of electric bowed instrument groups in South Africa. The objective was to provide a history of the development of such groups in South Africa, as well as to compare the methods and musical products of these groups. Another aim was to explore the effects of the groups on the South African music industry and music education. An initial literature research on the history of electric bowed instruments and the phenomenon of classical crossover music as a genre provided the contextual information needed to understand the building blocks of this relatively young compartment of the music industry. Characteristics and marketing strategies of this genre are discussed as well as the impact of aesthetics and gender on classical crossover artists. A set of questionnaires was distributed amongst members of these groups, classical professional musicians in professional South African orchestras, members of electric bowed instrument groups in South Africa, tertiary music students and students at a music school, as well as audience members at an electric bowed instrument group concert. The questionnaires were taken to the Centre for Statistical Consultation at the Stellenbosch University Statistics Department and the processed results were applied to this study. The influence of such groups on South African music education as well as the South African music industry is then examined. The combination of electric bowed instrument and classical crossover music gave birth to the phenomenon of electric bowed instrument groups. In this thesis the “originality” of such artists was evaluated, as a distinct pattern or formula for forming and operating such groups has materialised. The South African electric bowed instrument groups attempt to incorporate a uniquely South African quality into their performances with varying levels of success. Members of such groups, as well as professional classical musicians in the country, believe that the existence and performances of these groups have had an impact on South African music education; however, this theory is proven incorrect in this thesis. Furthermore, it was found that electric bowed instrument groups could have a negative impact on classical music in South Africa, as their marketing directed at the public may unintentionally steer audiences away from classical music performances. The electric bowed instrument groups industry has shown enough growth to prove its sustainability in South Africa as well as internationally. It is a valuable additional occupation for bowed instrument players in South Africa, although it might have a detrimental impact on the South African classical music industry.
ʼn Stel vraelyste is uitgedeel onder professionele klassieke musikante in Suid Afrika, lede van Suid-Afrikaanse elektriese strykinstrument groepe, tersiêre musiekstudente, studente by ʼn musiekskool sowel as ʼn gehoor by ʼn elektriese strykinstrument groep uitvoering.

Durkin, Rachael. „History and development of the viola d'amore“. Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22822.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The viola d’amore is a small bowed instrument that was in use predominantly from the second half of the seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth. Initially, the name viola d’amore referred to a treble viol strung with wire strings, but it underwent a transformation c.1700 with the addition of sympathetic strings, with the bowed strings changing from wire to gut. The history of the viola d’amore centres on German-speaking regions of Europe, with the cultivation of the sympathetic strings stemming from Austria. While originally reserved for the wealthiest classes, evidence suggests that the viola d’amore became a widely used instrument due to the number of extant instruments in collections today. Due to the viola d’amore existing in two forms, the historical and organological context of the instrument is of paramount importance. Thus, this thesis addresses not only the viola d’amore in both its forms, but also its predecessors, the baryton and the englische violet, charting their development and ultimate influence on the invention of the viola d’amore with sympathetic strings. The suggested line of evolution is supported by measurements and observations of construction of the individual instruments, as well as physical examinations of extant specimens, and is considered in light of relevant iconography, music scores, newspaper advertisements and literary references. The research has led to the redrawing of parameters for each instrument, clearly defining the instruments’ functions and notable attributes. This thesis is the first complete organological study of the viola d’amore and other bowed instruments with additional wire strings. It presents a comprehensive review of the associated literature for each instrument concerned, as well as measurements and organological observations, with particular emphasis on design and construction. Additionally, it also considers the development of wire-strung instruments in England, briefly including: native music wire-drawing; the existence of other instruments with the name ‘d’amore’ and its variations; and lesser considered instruments with sympathetic strings such as the hardanger fiddle and trumpet marine. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that the viola d’amore with sympathetic strings may be considered as the epitome of Baroque instrumental design.

Abstract A marimba bar makes a rich and vibrant sound when played by a skilled musician. When that same marimba bar is played by the typical mechanical engineering junior, it’s a different story. Then, that same marimba key provides a complex set of vibration modes that are a useful subject for a lab experiment in their Measurements & Instrumentation course. This paper will describe development of “The Marimba Experiment”, which is part of a junior-level engineering course in measurements at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Learning outcomes for this course include “provide students with hands-on experience: using various sensors, performing data collection, and interpretation of experimental results.” In this experiment, students measure vibrations using a piezoelectric accelerometer, charge amplifier and analog-to-digital conversion. Results can be viewed in two ways. First, it may be interpreted as a general example of a vibrating structural component. It has several natural frequencies and mode shapes (transverse bending, lateral bending, torsional), which are simultaneously active. The signal represents an example of a complex periodic signal. It may be analyzed by looking at the acceleration versus time response and by examining the Fourier transform of the data, which shows results in the frequency domain. Second, results may be interpreted in musical terms. The lowest frequency is what we recognize as “the note” and the higher modes represent the higher harmonics. The distribution of frequency ratios and the relative amplitudes of the higher frequencies are what gives a musical instrument its unique character. In other words, what makes middle-C on a marimba sound different than middle-C on a clarinet or violin? A well-designed engineering experiment can give students an immediate application example. In this case, it is an example which they spontaneously want to explore because they all enjoy music and want to understand how it is created.

Dynamics of photosynthesis pigments in the leaves of different varieties of winter wheat during the vegetation period is analyzed in the paper. The accumulation of pigments in the plant depends on the physiological activity, growth and development of the plant, therefore the composition and content of photosynthesis pigments chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids reflect the general condition of the plant. The ratio of chlorophyll a / b for normal photosynthesis activity in the leaves of the plant should be at least 1:3. The object of the research is different varieties of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) - 'Artist', 'Edvin', 'Skagen', 'Bertold' and 'Viola'. Field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Station of Aleksandras Stulginskis University in 2015-2016. Soil type was identified as IDg8 - k (LVg - p - w - cc) - shallow calcareous luvisol (Calc (ar) i - Epihypogleyic Luvisols). Agrochemical parameters of the soil were determined using accepted analytical methods. The content of photosynthesis pigments (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids) in green leaf mass was determined in 96% ethyl alcohol extract applying spectrophotometric Wettstein method, “Genesys” 6 spectrophotometer. The photosynthesis productivity (Fpr) was calculated according to the formula: Fpr = 2 (M2-M1) / (L1 + L2) T. The accuracy of the data analysis was estimated according to the standard measurement deviation from the mean. The highest content of photosynthesis pigments has been accumulated by winter wheat variety 'Skagen'. The best result has been observed at the end of nodding stage. A lower content of photosynthesis pigments has been found in the leaves of 'Edvin', 'Viola' and 'Artist' varieties. The highest photosynthesis productivity of all winter wheat varieties has been recorded at the end of nodding stage, and decrease of photosynthesis productivity has been observed since milk maturity stage.

With the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks upon us there is no shortage of reflections on two decades of global counterterrorism practice. Much of the commentary is focusing on the situation in Afghanistan and the Taliban’s return to power. While understandable, this potentially obscures some of the important developments that have taken place during the period, including those related to our understanding of the threat and how best to counter and prevent it. Three important ones point to the growing relevance of cities in preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE).

This rapid literature review explores how to maintain essential state functions and basic service delivery during escalating conflict situations. It draws on literature and ideas from various overlapping agendas including development and humanitarian nexus; development, humanitarian and peacebuilding nexus (the “triple nexus”); fragile states; state-building; conflict sensitivity; resilience; and conflict prevention and early warning. There has been an extensive exploration of these ideas over the past decades: as the international development agenda has increasingly focussed on the needs of fragile and conflict-affected contexts (FCAS); as violent conflicts have become more complex and protracted; as the global share of poverty has become increasingly concentrated in FCAS highlighting the need to combine humanitarian crisis strategies with longer-term development strategies; as threats emanating from FCAS increasingly affect countries beyond those states and regions e.g. through serious and organised crime (SOC) networks, migration, terrorism, etc; and as global trends like climate change and demographic shifts create new stresses, opportunities, and risks.

Annotation:
Persistent gendered assumptions about women and violence predominately depict women as non-violent and peaceful. Due to this gender blindness and simplistic frames used to understand the attraction of women toward far-right extremist groups, women tend to get overlooked as active participants, and their roles ignored or downplayed. This not only hinders the overall understanding of far-right extremist groups but also impedes the development of effective counterprograms that specifically address the experiences and paths of these women. Drawing from the experiences and insights of German initiatives and from additional literature on the topic, this policy note explores the wide-ranging motivations of women joining far-right extremist groups and the different roles they can play in them. By including wider research to why women leave far-right extremist groups, the policy note offers lessons learned and recommendations that may be helpful in optimizing prevention and exit programs aimed at women in far-right extremist groups beyond the German context.

Charting Violent Extremism Research Priorities in North Africa and the Sahel 2018. RESOLVE Network, Januar 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37805/rp2021.1.lcb.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
As the socio-political dynamics of conflict and insecurity continue to evolve across North Africa and the Sahel, efforts to prioritize the exploration of ongoing and emerging violent extremist trends remain important. For decades, violent conflict, poor resource management, environmental change, and weak governments (through lack of institutional capacity or by predatory elite design) have contributed to cycles of instability and state fragility. Violent extremist organizations such as Boko Haram, al-Qaeda, and the self-proclaimed Islamic State and its affiliates have benefited from this instability. As the groups, tactics, and contexts continue to change, greater attention to ongoing and emerging threats to peace and stability in the region is needed. In 2018, the RESOLVE Network convened over 30 global, regional, and local researchers, practitioners and policymakers with varied expertise in local governance, development, and the preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) research landscape in the Lake Chad Basin and regional proximity. The topics identified here reflect participants’ collective assessment of current dynamics, expertise, in-depth understanding, and commitment to continued analysis of violent extremism (VE) trends and dynamics in the region.
