Base isolation is arguably the most reliable method for providing enhanced protection of buildings against earthquake-induced actions, by virtue of a physical separation between the structure and the ground through elements/devices with controlled force capacity, significant lateral deformation capacity and (often) enhanced energy dissipation. Such a design solution has shown its effectiveness in protecting both structural and non-structural components, hence preserving their functionality even in the aftermath of a major seismic event. Despite lead rubber bearings being invented in New Zealand almost forty years ago, the Christchurch Women’s hospital was the only isolated building in Christchurch when the Canterbury earthquake sequence struck in 2010/11. Furthermore, a reference code for designing base-isolated buildings in New Zealand is still missing. The absence of a design standard or at least of a consensus on design guidelines is a potential source for a lack of uniformity in terms of performance criteria and compliance design approaches. It may also limit more widespread use of the technology in New Zealand. The present paper provides an overview of the major international codes (American, Japanese and European) for the design of base-isolated buildings. The design performance requirements, the analysis procedures, the design review process and approval/quality control of devices outlined in each code are discussed and their respective pros and cons are compared through a design application on a benchmark building in New Zealand. The results gathered from this comparison are intended to set the basis for the development of guidelines specific for the New Zealand environment.

The idea that a building can be uncoupled from the damaging effects of the ground movement produced by a strong earthquake has appealed to inventors and engineers for more than a century. Many ingenious devices have been proposed to achieve this result, but very few have been implemented and the concept now referred to as base isolation or seismic isolation has yet to be generally accepted by the engineering profession. Although most of the proposed systems are unacceptably complicated, in recent years a few practical systems have been developed and implemented. While some of these systems have been tested on large-scale shaking tables, none have to date been tested as-built by a strong earth tremor. The shake table testing and related static testing of full-scale components such as isolation bearings, however, has led to a certain degree of acceptance by the profession and it is possible that the number of practical implementations of base isolation will increase quite dramatically in the next few years. This paper describes recent implementations of base isolation and describes an approximate linear theory of isolation which can be used for the design of base isolation systems that use multilayer elastomeric isolators.

Stamp tests results of the two-layer basis from the crushed stone and sand reinforced by geogrid with steel fibers in a plastic shell are given in report. Deformation characteristics of the reinforced design are received. Experimentally established deflections of the reinforced basis are compared with the results received theoretically. Thus the reinforced layer of crushed stone is considered as a multilayered plate on the elastic basis. Bubnov-Galerkin's method of calculation is used. Satisfactory coincidence of theoretical and experimental results is received. The effect of reinforcement on deflections is established.

The offshore caisson breakwater at Costa Azul installed in 25m water depth is designed to withstand Pacific swell waves up to a PLS test case Hs 9.2m Tp 18.6s. Overall stability design is in accordance with the recommendations of PIANC WG 28. The critical failure mechanism is sliding, and the caisson base is cast with a deliberately roughened (serrated) profile to increase sliding resistance and optimize the caisson cross section. Site based testing at prototype scale was conducted to validate the coefficient of friction used for design between the caisson base and nominal 100mm single size granular bedding material. This testing confirms that the use of a suitably dimensioned serrated base profile allows the full internal angle of friction (with allowance for dilation) of the bedding material to develop at the base of the caisson, allowing the cross section design to be optimized.

Abstract:Knowledge-base design requires a thorough analysis of the concepts to be represented. If the analysis is incomplete or inaccurate, the resulting knowledge base may contain arbitrary restrictions, inconsistent data, or limitations that make future extensions impossible. Conceptual analysis is even more critical for sharing knowledge bases between heterogeneous systems. Analyses that are adequate for independent systems may cause incompatibilities when the systems share data. This paper discusses the kinds of problems that require a careful conceptual analysis and the difficulties caused by an incorrect or incomplete analysis. It also shows how independently developed knowledge bases can be related to one another by reanalyzing and redefining the basic concepts and relations. Such analysis is essential for sharing knowledge between systems developed for different purposes, such as relational and object-oriented databases or expert systems and natural language processors.

They are shown to be effective in trichlorosilane-mediated stereoselective conjugate reductions of C=C bonds. DFT calculations reveal that the strong hydrogen bonds between the amide linker and the chloride on silicon in the transition state contribute to the high reactivity of the catalyst.

Some studies show that the level of awareness of students in maintaining the environment is still lacking. It becomes the basis for making a design of acid-base material by using science approach of community technology. The purpose of this research is to make a chemical learning design using science, technology and society (STM) approach on acid-base material to raise student awareness to the environment and produce a local instruction for acid-base concept with approach of community technology science. The research method used is design research method with preliminary design, teaching experiment and retrospective analysis. This study describes how the study of acid-base concepts contributes to the students of grade XI IPA3 on the increase of environmental awareness. The result of teaching experiment shows that the design of acid-base concept study with science technology approach of society can increase awareness of students of class XI IPA3 to environment. Abstrak Beberapa kajian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kesadaran siswa dalam menjaga lingkungan masih kurang. Hal tersebut menjadi dasar untuk membuat suatu desain pembelajaran materi asam basa dengan menggunakan pendekatan sains teknologi masyarakat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membuat suatu desain pembelajaran kimia dengan menggunakan pendekatan sains, teknologi dan masyarakat (STM) pada materi asam basa untuk meningkatkan kesadaran siswa terhadap lingkungan dan menghasilkan suatu local instruction local untuk konsep asam basa dengan pendekatan sains teknologi masyarakat. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode design research dengan tahap preliminary design, teaching experiment dan retrospective analysis. Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan bagaimana pembelajaran konsep asam basa memberi kontribusi pada siswa-siswa kelas XI IPA3 terhadap peningkatan kesadaran lingkungan. Hasil dari teaching eksperiment menunjukkan bahwa desain pembelajaran konsep asam basa dengan pendekatan sains teknologi masyarakat dapat meningkatkan kesadaran siswa-siswa kelas XI IPA3 terhadap lingkungan. The construction of a lunar base has been thought about for almost five decades. The earliest concepts dealt with size and shape concepts rather than actual design of structures and equipment. As the exploration of space has received emphasis in more recent times, the need to consider the factors of design and design approaches have received more attention. It still is not possible to completely rationalize the design of a habitat, for example, but we are now very aware of the need to include the fracture and fatigue properties of the materials of which the hardware of a lunar infrastructure is constructed. It is reasonably certain that the same techniques used for terrestrial designs can be used for lunar bases provided the space environment is taken into account. The extensive amount of research on fracture and fatigue that has been and is being conducted, along with the ease and speed of computation of their effects on alternative design features will be invaluable in providing a highly reliable, safe lunar base.

An analytical study on the application of different base isolation systems for original design or retrofit of typical building structures of the Mexican Pacific Coast is presented. The subject hypothetical buildings are located on hard soil conditions at Acapulco. Typical accelerograms for the Mexican subduction zone recorded during recent earthquakes were used for 3-D time-history analyses. Bidirectional input was used for the time-history analyses. The studied base isolation systems reported in this study are lead-rubber bearings (LRB) and steel-hysteretic dampers (SHD). For the original design case studies, the superstructures were designed: a) according to the seismic provisions of the building code of Guerrero state (RCGS-90) for the fixed-base condition and, b) according to an elastic design based upon a 3-D lateral force distribution consistent with dominant mode shapes for the isolated structure to yield the peak dynamic base shear transmitted by the isolation system. Material volumes for the superstructure were estimated for both the fixed-base code designs and the base-isolation designs. Important savings on the volume of concrete and steel reinforcement can be attained for the base isolated designs with respect to their counterpart fixed-base designs. Dynamic responses for the isolated structures compare favorably with those for the fixed-base structures. The study confirms many findings published in the literature regarding the effectiveness of base isolation and the effect of torsional responses. However, the study also shows that the dynamic stability of isolators is not always achieved using rational design procedures. The dynamic stability and design of the studied base isolators can be controlled by acceleration records associated to moderate earthquakes when these records are near the fault plane and by torsional responses.

The Occupation Data Base under development at TPDC consists of three files. The first file describes military occupations, providing information about the attributes of the occupation. It addresses the question: what does the occupation look like? The second file describes occupations from a “demographic” perspective, or more simply put, answers the question: who are the people performing the job? It provides a statistical profile (current and historical) of the characteristics, experience, and behavior of the people serving in each military occupation. The third file provides a data file oh training programs, resources, methods and media as these elements relate to military occupations. All occupations within the enlisted, warrant officer, and officer communities are covered in each service, both active and reserve components. These three files are being built from current and historical data and will be updated regularly, thereby providing a comparative perspective with which senior service planners can make informed decisions on defense training issues.

Introduction. Complete denture reinforced with metal bases is fabricated in cases of fracture risk as well as in selected patients with neuromuscular disorders. The aim of this report was to present different designs of metal framework for complete denture and their advantages in the treatment of edentulous patients. Material and Methods. The study included 116 edentulous patients who received complete dentures. The respondents were divided into two groups according to the type of denture used. Thirty one patients were rehabilitated with complete dentures reinforced with metal base, whereas 85 patients received conventional complete acrylic dentures. Metal bases were fabricated using Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Two designs different in regards to the vibrating line were fabricated: metal frame extended to the vibrating line and acrylic resin extended to the vibrating line. After investing and casting, metal bases were electropolished. Subsequent processes of arranging artificial teeth, waxing, flasking and finishing completed the fabrication process of dentures. Results. Denture base fractures were prevented in majority of patients. The design of upper denture where metal frame was extended to the vibrating line and metal base with elongation over the convex edentulous ridge in lower jaw were the most favored and successful in prosthetic rehabilitation of experimental group of edentulous patients. There was no need for rebasing of complete dentures reinforced with metal base. Conclusion. Complete denture reinforced with metal base presents a favorable design for rehabilitation of edentulous patients with well pronounced edentulous ridges and low tendency to resorption.

This paper formulates the developable surface design problem in an optimal control setting. Given a regular curve bt on the unit sphere corresponding to a one-parameter family of rulings, and two base curve endpoints a0,a1∈R3, we consider the problem of constructing a base curve at such that at0=a0,at1=a1, and the resulting surface fs,t=at+sbt is developable. We formulate the base curve design problem as an optimal control problem, and derive solutions for objective functions that reflect various practical aspects of developable surface design, e.g., minimizing the arc length of the base curve, keeping the line of regression distant from the base curve, and approximating a given arbitrary ruled surface by a developable surface. By drawing upon the large body of available results for the optimal control of linear systems with quadratic criteria, our approach provides a flexible method for designing developable surfaces that are optimized for various criteria.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of bracket base designs on shear bond strength of ceramic brackets bonded to natural teeth and to determine the common site of bond failure.Materials & Method: 120 therapeutically extracted maxillary first premolars were divided into six groups of 20 samples each and were mounted in resin blocks. Each sample was bonded with bracket of that particular group and subjected to thermocycling. The shear bond strength was measured using Universal Testing Machine. After debonding, the teeth and brackets were examined under stereo-microscope for adhesive remnant index.Result: Ceramic brackets with ball base design (Group A) yielded statistically highest shear bond strength followed by microcrystalline base (Group D), dimple base (Group E), mesh base (Group C) and dove tail base (Group B) design. Ceramic brackets yield higher bond strength than metal brackets (Group F) irrespective of base design. Insignificant difference was seen between Group A and Group D and between Group B and Group C. Bond failure between adhesive and bracket (Type 3) was seen in 80% of the brackets with ball base design and bond failure between adhesive and bracket (Type 1) was seen in 80% of brackets with dove tail base design.Conclusion: Bracket base design is an important consideration for shear bond strength. Base design with more number of undercuts offer higher shear bond strength. Ceramic brackets with more number of mechanical undercuts were less likely to bond failure at adhesive bracket base interface and vice versa

Knowledge of variant design is classified into product domain knowledge, variant design methodology and basis theory knowledge, variant design process combines top-down mode to bottom-top mode, its corresponding information resource base includes case base, knowledge base and database. CBR is the core for design reasoning. The frame of knowledge-based variant design system includes resource base, resource management, variant design and evaluation subsystem. Using the system, designer could reuse design resource and reduce developing cost.

ABSTRACTThis article, the introduction to a collection of six related articles, describes the general rationale and design of the Berlin Aging Study (BASE). The distinguishing features of BASE are: (1) a special focus on the very old (70–105 years), (2) broad inter-diciplinarity (medicine, psychiatry, psychology, sociology and economics), and (3) sample heterogeneity achieved by local (West Berlin) representativeness. In addition to discipline-specific topics, four theoretical orientations guide the study: (1) differential ageing, (2) continuity versus discontinuity of ageing, (3) range and limits of plasticity and reserve capacity, and (4) ageing as an inter-disciplinary and systemic phenomenon. To provide a foundation and framework for the remaining articles, this paper outlines the protocols, designs, and measurement procedures of fourteen data collection sessions. In addition, information is given on the samples used for empirical analysis. Two samples from the first wave of the Berlin Aging Study are addressed in this collection of articles. The first (N = 360), uses data from the BASE Intake Assessment Protocol (Session 1). The second (N = 156), employs data from the entire 14-session full protocol of BASE. Selectivity analyses involving 22 comparison variables are reported in this paper and demonstrate that, with the exception of 12-month mortality, these two samples displayed the intended sample heterogeneity. Those results suggest that data from BASE hold high generalizability.

Base isolation is a strategy for a design of buildings in areas where seismic loads govern. It enables the reduction of earthquake excitation to an acceptable level, without an increase of structural acceleration. This paper presents the results of the experimental investigations of various schemes of first-storey designs for steel buildings with base isolation.A scaled-down steel frame building was used for the shaking table tests, which were conducted in the Earthquake Simulator Laboratory of the University of British Columbia. The base-storey design was altered while the dynamic response of the frame was recorded. The base isolation consisted of steel roller bearings with parallel steel yield rings, to limit excessive displacements and provide wind restraint.The proposed base storey is substantially different from conventional solutions. The variation in the base-storey design was aimed at the elimination of the blind base storey or double foundation in order to increase the economy of the base-isolation system. The experimental tests showed suitable design approaches, and analytical studies to optimize them will follow.It was verified that uncoupling of buildings from the earthquake ground motion is relatively simple to achieve. Certain restraint is required to resist wind and other horizontal loads. This is usually achieved by mechanical fuses or energy absorbers. A solid state energy absorber was used in the described tests. Key words: base-isolation system for buildings, earthquake-resistant steel structures, experimental investigations, retrofit system.
