Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis investigates questions related to the competition between firms in the context of the adoption of new technologies, with a particular focus on digitization. The decreasing costs of storing, accessing, and distributing information resulting from digitization have affected market dynamics and influenced economic outcomes. Through empirical analyses, the chapters in this thesis seek to comprehend and evaluate the economic phenomena associated with digitization. In Chapter 1, I focus on a topic that is highly debated in antitrust policy circles by shedding new light on startup acquisitions in the software industry. Given the substantial economies of scale and scope in software markets, the main competitive force in these markets is believed to come from new, innovative entrants. Therefore, I examine the incentives of young, Venture Capital-funded startups to enter the market in light of the numerous acquisitions that have been taking place. My contributions lie in (1) collecting and assembling new data that enable to identify competing firms; (2) in producing new, policy-relevant facts on startup acquisitions in software markets; and (3) in building and estimating a stylized dynamic structural model of startup entry. My findings suggest that acquisitions can, in general ,spur the incentives for new, innovative entry. On the other hand, certain types of acquisitions, particularly those targeting very mature startups and conducted at high prices, are followed by fewer entrants, underscoring the importance of antitrust review of mergers on a case-by-case basis. The decline in the costs of distributing information has given online platforms the role of “gatekeepers” that control what information users ultimately view. Chapter 2 therefore focuses on platform design, specifically the algorithms that rank listed products on e-commerce websites. By examining rankings and pricing behavior of hotels on an online travel agent, I find that the ranking algorithm used by this platform tends to intensify price competition between hotels by displaying hotels more visibly at times at which they are priced lower. By estimating a model of consumer search and simulating market outcomes under counterfactual rankings, I show that consumers would face somewhat higher prices if the ranking algorithm worked differently, leading to losses in consumer surplus. Overall, the chapter highlights the significant impact online platforms have on competition within industries. As digitization has led to an increase in the amount of data collected on individuals, many jurisdictions have enacted privacy regulation targeted at protecting citizens’ personal data. Chapter 3 explores the effects of such privacy regulation on startup acquisitions. In particular, I focus on unintended consequences of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) implemented in 2018 in the European Union. Motivating anecdotal evidence suggests that the GDPR may have increased the burden during due diligence as well as the risk of conducting an acquisition. Analyzing acquisitions of startups conducted between 2014 and 2019, I find that the number of acquisitions of VC-funded European startups has indeed declined after enactment of the GDPR compared to startups based in the US or other non-European countries

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation shows some results obtained from an exploration study about possible applications of the expert systems technique in the energy economics field. The objective consists not in realizing completely operational expert system, but in designing "tracks" which lead to identify the problems which are resolvable by this technique, and to describe the general structure and the main elements for each system. To illustrate the faisability of the propositions, we have incorporated in each part some bases of rules or models based on knowledge ; for propose of principal demonstration, we have developed a very detailed prototype aiding to the construction, validation and expliotation of the global energy balance sheet

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDuring the past two decades, considerable research efforts have been devoted to the development of dynamic traffic models mainly motivated by ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) technologies. These models describe the evolution of the congestion of urban and inter-urban networks as a dynamic process instead of considering -as in static models- that this phenomenon is stationary. This dissertation presents an innovative methodology that uses the simulation approach. In the first part, we build a fully dynamic model with two key features: (1) a mesoscopic event-based traffic model and (2) a departure time choice model based on the work of W. Vickrey. Its advantages are the ability to compute stationary time-dependent states and to take into account within-day time as well as day-to-day adjustments. Computer implementation and performance issues are addressed to allow to simulate large-scale networks within reasonable computing times. The second part focuses on the applicability of the simulator. Its validation is presented on the test-site of the city of Paris with real world data. It is compared with other existing approaches such as that of static models and network-aggregated models. A wide range of policies and scenarios are envisaged: variation of demand, access control, traffic restraint, implementation of staggered and flexible hours. The model is also adapted to study the economics of road pricing. We show that the simulation approach can help to design pricing schemes by predicting their impacts on traffic flows and by assessing the differential responses of users. Fixed and modular pricing schemes are tested on the network of Sioux-Falls. Lastly, we examine the integration of traffic simulators withland-usemodels

The evolution of these concepts of American origin is due amongst other things, with awakening political of advantages of recourse to TIC like lever of reform of State. It is estimated that the free software would guarantee collaboratif work, interworking, safety, the reduction of the costs, technological independence. . . Although these advantages are not always checked, itis obvious today that the open programs source are a planetary success and become in certain cases a true credible alternative to the software owner. However, this evolution was done notwithstanding a legal absence of recognition which would make it possible to make safe use of the free software. There exist for the time being in France, any law, a final jurisprudence, no work of right, and yet the open programs source raise important legal questions. The use of the English language, yhe contractual nature of the user licence, the qualification of the licence agreement of free software, its validity as well as the validity of some of these provisions (clauses of unguaranteed and non responsability), the question of the right of the authors, of the contribuors and the users, the validity of the contract, the applicable law and the qualified judge for the contracts having an element of extraneity. All these questions tackled in the present study are not certainly diriment , but can cause a legal insecuriry likely to block the recourse to the free software

This latter tends to show that these activities would located themselves in new spaces of production. But, in view of an inadequate conceptualization of high technology, it is extremely difficult to identify what their precise characteristics and their processes of location would be. The aim of this thesis is therefore to provide a theoretical framework which allows us to understand the differentiated emergence of high technology activities in the world economic space. After defining them as activites which emerge with the appearance of new technological paradigms which present the specificity to be based on the progress science, we show that an identification of firms which enter into these activities can't be done without taking into consideration their national context : the emerging industrial structures within the different countries diverge. Then we emphasize that the different types of firms, which are subject to differentiated organizational contraints, also have a heterogeneous locating behaviour. The spatial distribution of a high technology activity in an intranational space is therefore in part the product of the differenciated conditions of its emergence in the different countries. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn recent years, the use of electricity routed from batteries of plug-in electric vehicles (BEVs: battery electric vehicles and PHEVs: plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) to the power grid for resale purposes, a concept commonly referred to as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), has been the subject of numerous studies. With manufacturers opting more frequently for lithium-ion batteries in the production of such plug-in electric vehicles, the profitability in terms of resale price of such V2G-produced energy is put into question. Indeed, Li-ion batteries are rather expensive given their lifespan of approximately 1000 charge-discharge cycles. The ultimate purpose of this Master’s essay is to determine a set of principles to allow for the establishment of an equally lucrative and technologically-economic plan regarding the resale of V2G-produced electrical energy as the result of BEVs and PHEVs equipped with Li-ion batteries supplied by grade 1 and 2 bidirectional chargers. In order to successfully accomplish this feat, numerous factors must be taken into consideration: the cost of such batteries and their durability relative to their maximum attainable number of charge-discharge cycles; the return value of bidirectional chargers; the expenses incurred by the power network in purchasing such electricity; the maximum permissible quantity of electric energy that can be exchanged with the electric grid per year. Initially, the topology of a chosen bidirectional charger undergoes a mathematical analysis of its performance output with regard to its overall cost. Subsequently, multiple charge-discharge cycles are conducted on the lithium-ion batteries at varying discharge intensities in order to evaluate the cells’ deterioration. The former results, combined with the development of a formula for the financial break-even point, demonstrates the effects of a bidirectional charger’s expense and performance, along with the degeneration of Li-ion batteries, on the resale price of V2G-produced electrical energy.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleInvestments allocated to IT by organisations are increasingly important. They represent in some industries more than 6% of the organisation’s revenue (Gartner, 2014a). However, many organizations still fail to create value from their IT investments because of a lack of control or a poor decision making on these investments (IT Governance Institute, 2008). Successful enterprises strive to avoid these shortcomings through effective IT governance. The existence of a positive relationship between IT governance and organizational performance was highlighted by some previous research. For instance, Weill and Ross (2004) point out that companies with an effective IT governance tend to achieve 40 % better return from their IT investments than others. However, these studies do not explain how IT governance is related to the organisation’s performance. In this thesis, we sought to clarify conceptually and empirically that relationship by offering initially a theoretical conceptualization of this relationship that is based on the dynamic capabilities perspective (article #1). Conceptual learning from the first article was subsequently exploited to develop and empirically test a theoretical model of IT governance influence on IT contribution to organizational performance (article #2). Finally, a qualitative study of the importance given to external stakeholders in IT governance was conducted (article #3). This third article assumes that effective IT governance that is able to achieve IT business value for the organization must consider every stakeholder that can influence the organization’s IT decision-making, including the organization external stakeholders. Keywords: IT governance, IT management sophistication, IT strategic alignment, IT contribution to organisational performance, dynamic capabilities, external stakeholders, stakeholder theory.
Sohrabi, Helia. „Physical internet-enabled hyperconnected distribution assessment“. Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/26986.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Physical Internet (PI) is an initiative that identifies several symptoms of logistics systems unsustainability and inefficiency and tackles them by proposing a novel paradigm called Hyperconnected Logistics. Similar to the Digital Internet, which connects thousands of personal and local computer networks, PI will connect the fragmented logistics systems of today. The main purpose is to enhance the performance of logistics systems from economic, environmental and social perspectives. Focusing specifically on the distribution system, this thesis questions the order of magnitude of the performance gain by exploiting the PI-enabled hyperconnected distribution. It is also concerned by the characterization of the hyperconnected distribution planning. To address the first question, an exploratory research approach based on optimization modeling is applied; first, the current and prospective distribution systems are modeled. Then, a set of realistic business samples are created, and their economic and environmental performance by targeting multiple social performances are assessed. A conceptual planning framework is proposed to support the decision making in the hyperconnected distribution system. Based on the results obtained by our investigation, it can be argued that a substantial gain can be achieved by shifting toward Hyperconnected Distribution. It is also revealed that the magnitude of the gain varies by business characteristics and the targeted social performance. Since the Physical Internet is a novel topic, chapter 1 briefly introduces PI and Hyperconnected Logistics. Chapter 2 discusses the research foundations, goal and methodology. It also describes the challenges of conducting this research and highlights the type of contributions aimed for. Chapter 3 presents the optimization models including a core distribution network design modeling approach. Influenced by the characteristics of the current and prospective distribution systems, three distribution system-driven models are developed. Chapter 4 engages with the characterization of the business samples, the modeling and calibration of the parameter that are employed in the models. The exploratory investigation results are presented in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 describes the hyperconnected distribution planning framework. Chapter 7 summarizes the content of the thesis and highlights the main contributions. Moreover, it identifies the research limitations and potential future research avenues.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSociologists frequently differentiate eras based on the way commerce is undertaken (Ashton, 2013; Rose, 1991). Often, technological advance changes the way parties exchange goods, a phenomenon that has consequences for epochal change (Wright, 2004). In this regard, economic historians typically differentiate the feudal era from the industrial age because of the invention of the steam technology in the late 17th century and its widespread application in the mid 18th century (Ashton, 2013). The availability of the World Wide Web created the digital era. Whereas the old industrial-age epoch mostly limits work exchange within a defined era, the Internet permits expansion of trading parameters. While scholars mostly consider that in the era of the Internet substantial changes have occurred in relation to commerce and trading, most theories about management (particular those concerning planning and strategy) have their origins in the industrial age, the era before the Internet existed. Despite the efforts of scholars such as Allen et al, (2007) the full range of competitive strategy options available to modern firms may not have been adequately delineated. The present body of work argues that Internet-based technologies have influenced the emergence of distinctively post-modern or digital age industries and that, therefore, theory regarding competitive advantage such as those of Michael Porter must be revisited. The aim of this work is to provide a conceptual overview of the emergence of complexity in the digital era and indicate how this emergent phenomenon has implications for strategy generally and the employment relationship in particular, insofar as technological complexity concerns labor control. The project has produced peer-reviewed scholarly articles in mainstream academic journals. These articles address the consequences of duplicity for three kinds of actors : those who craft and implement business strategy; consumers; and, those in (what is conventional though of as) the labor market.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleConsulting is not an established trade such as the lawyer or physician profession to which consultants use to compare themselves. However consulting is a very important and legitimating factor in the economic world. In the beginning of the 90s as in the early 2000s, it successfully mastered the crises it encountered. Its structures are relatively stable. Eventhough the consultants mediate between the film and the everchanging economic world, it is to be asked what are the factors which help those developments and stability? In order to answer this question, we have set at work a pluri-methodological process resting on four levels over the period from 1990 through 2005. First level: a statistical analysis of consultants' morphology and professionnal and social dynamics whereby can be seen their closeness to business bourgeoisie as well as the transitory character of their consulting activity. Second: a lengthways analysis of consulting companies which renders the space structure visible, either by showing the structures at work in the consulting process (capital undivision, integration of diverse resources, concentration, social surface and volume of resources. Third: the opposition which exists between conception and realisation. Fourth an analysis of the ERP implemented at EDF helped render visible the complex interplay between consultants and their clients. A synthesis of those different analyses shows the cyclical nature of the appropriation by consulting firms of consulting services, which helps understand both the ability of the trade to change and at the same time as it perpetuates them

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis explores the construction of symmetric cryptography primitives. We reach better constructions than that of the literature, we a focus on the reduction of implementation costs. We study three types of primitives: block ciphers, which are the most commonly used in symmetric cryptography, a stream cipher designed for a specific application and a message authentication algorithm. We reduce the costs of the two main components of block ciphers: S-boxes and diffusion matrices. Feistel and MISTY-like structures appear to be a good choice to design secure S-boxes at a low cost, and lead us to new S-boxes with the best known trade-off between security and implementation cost. We also study the Butterfly structure which yields S-boxes with an excellent security. As for diffusion matrices, we develop an algorithm to look for formal matrices in a polynomial ring, then we instantiate its outputs to obtain matrices which are optimal in terms of diffusion at a lower cost than those of the literature. We also identify a weakness in the stream cipher FLIP, designed to fit some very specific cost constraints. We show that FLIP requires a different analysis than other stream ciphers and deduce from it an attack, which led to an update in FLIP to get a more resilient cipher. Finally, we study MAC algorithms, which are used to authenticate messages. Combining works from the literature, we build a MAC which is less costly than those used in practice with an equivalent security, aiming at an implementation on 32-bit micro-controllers

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleCaching content closer to the users has been proposed as a win-win scenario in order to offer better rates to the users while saving costs from the operators. Nonetheless, caching can be successful if the cached files manage to attract a lot of requests. To this end, we take advantage of the fact that the internet is becoming more entertainment oriented and propose to bind recommendation systems and caching in order to increase the hit rate. We model a user who requests multiple contents from a network which is equipped with a cache. We propose a modeling framework for such a user which is based on Markov chains and depart from the IRM. We delve into different versions of the problem and derive optimal and suboptimal solutions according to the case we examine. Finally we examine the variation of the Recommendation aware caching problem and propose practical algorithms that come with performance guarantees. For the former, the results indicate that there are high gains for the operators and that myopic schemes without a vision, are heavily suboptimal. While for the latter, we conclude that the caching decisions can significantly improve when taking into consideration the underlying recommendations

Chapter two proposes new law and economics analysis for data-driven antitrust and merger practices. It considers debated topics related to the integration of privacy in the assessment of antitrust and merger practices, algorithmic collusion and pre-emptive mergers. It argues the need to integrate privacy in any data-driven antitrust and merger practices as data imply necessarily privacy and data protection issues. Finally, chapter three proposes to regulate the digital economy. It demonstrates that the economy is highly concentrated and that the markets cannot correct themselves market failures. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe aim of the thesis is to show what are the means and strategic and organizational processes the firms of the sectors highly intense in new IT and innovation use to cope with to asset specificity and to the dynamics of the globalisation of the economy. The New Institutional Economics (NIE) leads our work thanks to the conception of the firm used which is based essentially on a contractualist approach which uses the works of the transaction cost economics and of theory of the incomplete contracts; however other approaches of the firms are evocated in order to enrich the academical view of our thesis. Moreover, the notion of strategic alliance is very important for our work, and it allows us to operate an articulation between the concepts of Organization and the Market for put in the light some firm’s dynamics in a market economy. Furthermore, the thesis concerns the strategic alliances under two other following perspectives: the first one is the multinationalization of the innovative firms, and the second one concerns the organizational response that establish the strategic alliances to cope with the specificities of the innovative sectors. The game theory and the concept of Nash equilibrium can help us to model ou describe the dynamic of the firms belonging the sector of telecommunications. The dynamic of other innovative sectors is studied through the notion of strategic alliance. The influence of the decisions and the public policies concerning the telecommunication regulation and the impulse of the innovation is evocated too. The influence of public policies can be seen particularly concerning the competition when the public regulator allows in the innovative sectors the competing firms to cooperate in upstream (for example research and development joined). Some research and developments models are presented in the thesis. It is important to note that the thesis has empirical data highlighting the weight of the sectors highly intense in research and development and so showing the weight of the innovation in the economy. The geographical field covers by these data is international The thesis thanks to the notion of strategic alliance enables to retail the organizational processes and the behavioral strategies (models of game) strengthening the innovation, enabling to cope with to a strong asset specificity and explaining the firms’ responses in a globalized economy. We finish in providing the organizational forms the most adapted for cope with to the strong specificity of the sector of telecommunications. There are the firm (post-merger) and the relational joint venture concerning this latter we demonstrate that the presence of relational contracts enables to reduce the will to renege and is a protection against the contractual opportunism
