Devendra Lal was an Indian nuclear physicist who began his career studying particle physics while a student at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bombay, using tracks in nuclear emulsions to study cosmic ray particles and their interactions. He soon moved on to the search for radionuclides produced in the atmosphere by cosmic ray bombardment, independently (with colleagues) discovering radioisotopes of Be, P and Si and using them as geophysical tracers for atmospheric, meteorological and oceanographic processes. His career revolved principally around multiple aspects of cosmic rays, employing theory and experiment to examine their flux, chemical composition and energy spectrum, both at present and in the past through (for example) studies of particle tracks in the minerals of meteorites and lunar samples. He played a major role in developing approaches for the use of terrestrial cosmic-ray-produced isotopes as dating tools and tracers for a wide range of Earth processes, from biological cycles in the ocean to landscape evolution and ice ablation in the Antarctic. At various stages of his career Lal was professor at TIFR and led the geophysics group there, was professor and director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, India, and was professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. He was elected fellow of numerous scientific organizations and academies internationally, and was the recipient of many scientific awards and prizes.

Leo Sachs was a worldwide renowned scientist for his major contributions in several fields. In the mid 1950s he showed that amniocentesis could be used for prenatal diagnosis of sex and blood group antigens. He then focused on various aspects of normal development and cancer, including the control of normal haematopoiesis and leukaemia, carcinogenesis in vitro by polyoma and SV40 tumour viruses, chemical carcinogens and X-rays, chromosomes and the reversibility of cancer, surface membrane changes in malignant cells and suppression of malignancy by inducing differentiation. The cell culture system he established in the early 1960s for the clonal development of normal haematopoietic cells made it possible to analyse the molecular basis of normal haematopoiesis, and discover the proteins that regulate viability, proliferation and differentiation of different blood cell lineages and the changes that drive leukaemia. His studies established significant general concepts, including: the differential responsiveness of cancer cells to normal regulators of development; suppression of myeloid leukaemia by inducing differentiation, bypassing malignancy-driving genetic defects; identification of chromosomes that control tumour suppression; discovering apoptosis as a major mechanism by which WT-p53 suppresses malignancy; and the ability of haematopoietic cytokines to suppress apoptosis in both normal and leukaemic cells. Leo was fortunate to witness his pioneering discoveries and ideas move from the basic science stage to effective clinical applications, using amniocentesis for prenatal detection of genetic abnormalities, augmenting normal haematopoiesis in patients with various haematopoietic deficiencies and suppressing malignancy by inducing differentiation and apoptosis.

For over half a century Stanley Rushbrooke played a leading role in teaching and research in statistical mechanics. He started his academic career at the University of Cambridge as a research student of R.H. (later Sir Ralph) Fowler a few years before the start of the Second World War. After a brief spell as a research assistant at the University of Bristol, he moved to University College Dundee in 1939, where he enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with C.A. Coulson. <span lang="EN-US">Over 30 years, the Flores region experienced earthquakes with Mw &gt;7 twice, namely in 1992 and 2021 at shallow depths &lt;60 km. However, the behavior of the aftershocks accompanying the quake has yet to be studied in detail. This research aims to compare the behavior of aftershocks after the main earthquake. This research uses three-lifetime analysis functions, namely, Wilber3, Mustang Web Browser, and comparison of Probability Density Function Hazard. The data used comes from IRIS data and BMKG Online Data. Through graphical analysis, it is known that the data for the time difference for aftershocks follow the RMS distribution, indicating that the Flores Sea aftershock on 12 December 1992 occurred with high intensity on the 3<sup>rd</sup> and the 6<sup>th</sup> day after the main earthquake. Meanwhile, the aftershocks in the Flores Sea on 14 December 2021 tended to occur with a more even intensity during the observation period, but the power returned to high on the 7<sup>th</sup> day</span>

John Hugh Chesters, fulfilling his ambitions as a schoolboy, had a lifelong involvement in the application of science to solve practical and industrially important problems. His major contributions relate mainly to the efficiency and reliability of furnaces for steel melting. These were accomplished through research on refractory materials for furnace linings and on heat flow. His work led to great improvements in the processing and use of ceramics in bulk and in the characterization of the structure and properties of these materials. As a result, the capability of appropriate refractory materials to withstand stresses, sudden thermal shock, and corrosive environments for the long periods at high temperatures that arise in iron and steelmaking processes was substantially increased.

Ralph Louis Wain died on 14 December 2000, at the age of 89 years. Just a few weeks before his death he had kept an audience enraptured by his enthusiastic presentation of chemical ideas during a two-hour lecture. Louis applied his chemical acumen to the solution of agricultural problems, believing the advancement of agricultural practice was highly dependent on developments in chemistry. He was interested particularly in how subtle changes in the structures of chemicals could influence their plant-growth-regulatory properties, and he discovered and actively promoted a group of selective herbicides, some of which are still used today in commercial practice. Many would regard him as Britain's most outstanding agricultural chemist of the twentieth century. He received numerous honours and prizes, but two gave him especial pleasure, perhaps because of their unusual citations. These were the Actonian Prize of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, awarded only every seventh year, for outstanding scientific work ‘which illustrated the wisdom and beneficence of the Almighty’ (previous winners had included Edison, Marconi, Marie Curie and Fleming), and the John Scott (USA) International Award for ‘research for the benefit, welfare and happiness of mankind’. Wain was ever conscious of the need to protect and increase the harvests of food crops for the peoples of poorer, developing countries, and he was a major player in scientists' successes in increasing food crop production. Louis took every opportunity to convey his ideas and enthusiasm to fascinated audiences, whether they were schoolchildren or learned scientists, at home or abroad. He listed travel as one of his hobbies. Did this passion derive from the many invitations he received to lecture abroad? Whatever the answer, he gained great satisfaction from this role; and his audiences were most appreciative of his lucid lecturing style, and often the puckish humour with which his ideas were presented.
