We discuss the effect of the dynamics of D-branes on moduli stabilization in type IIB string theory compactifications, with reference to a concrete toy model of [Formula: see text] orientifold compactification with fractional D3-branes and anti-D3-branes at orbifold fixed points. The resulting attractive forces between anti-D3-branes and D3-branes, together with the repulsive forces between anti-D3-branes and O3-planes, can affect the stability of the compact space. There are no complex structure moduli in [Formula: see text] orientifold, which should thus capture some generic features of more general settings where all complex structure moduli are stabilized by three-form fluxes. The simultaneous presence of branes and anti-branes brings along the breaking of supersymmetry. Non-BPS combinations of this type are typical of “brane supersymmetry breaking” and are a necessary ingredient in the KKLT scenario for stabilizing the remaining Kähler moduli. The conclusion of our analysis is that, while mutual D-brane interactions sometimes help Kähler moduli stabilization, this is not always the case.

We construct 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 BPS solutions spanned by diagonal elements of U (N) constant fluxes in the (6+1)-dimensional U (N) super Yang–Mills theory on T6 with topological stability. These solutions represent BPS bound states of D0, D2, D4, and D6 branes. The consistency with the D-brane charge conservation implies that unstable D0–D2–D6-brane systems in a B field decay to the BPS solutions, in which lower-dimensional D-branes are dissolved in D6-branes.

We study Myers' world volume effective action of coincident D-branes. We investigate a system of N0D0-branes in the geometry of Dp-branes with p = 2 or p = 4. The choice of coordinates can make the action simplified and tractable. For p = 4, we show that a certain pointlike D0-brane configuration solving equations of motion of the action can expand to form a fuzzy two-sphere via magnetic moment effect without changing quantum numbers. We compare noncommutative D0-brane configurations with dual spherical D(6 - p)-brane systems. We also discuss the relation between these configurations and giant gravitons in 11 dimensions.

We introduce T-duality invariant versions of D-branes in doubled geometry using a global covariant framework based on para-Hermitian geometry and metric algebroids. We define D-branes as conformal boundary conditions for the open string version of the Born sigma-model, where they are given by maximally isotropic vector bundles which do not generally admit the standard geometric picture in terms of submanifolds. When reduced to the conventional sigma-model description of a physical string background as the leaf space of a foliated para-Hermitian manifold, integrable branes yield D-branes as leaves of foliations which are interpreted as Dirac structures on the physical spacetime. We define a notion of generalised para-complex D-brane, which realises our D-branes as para-complex versions of topological A/B-branes. We illustrate how our formalism recovers standard D-branes in the explicit example of reductions from doubled nilmanifolds.

The tremendous progress achieved through the study of black holes and branes suggests that their time-dependent generalizations called Spacelike branes (S-branes) may prove similarly useful. An example of an established approach to S-branes is to include a string boundary interaction and we first summarize evidence for the death of open string degrees of freedom for the homogeneous rolling tachyon on a decaying brane. Then, we review how to extract the flat S-brane worldvolumes describing the homogeneous rolling tachyon and how large deformations correspond to creation of lower dimensional strings and branes. These S-brane worldvolumes are governed by S-brane actions which are on equal footing to D-brane actions, since they are derived by imposing conformality on the string worldsheet, as well as by analyzing fluctuations of time-dependent tachyon configurations. As further examples we generalize previous solutions of the S-brane actions so as to describe multiple decaying and nucleating closed fundamental strings. Conceptually S-brane actions are therefore different from D-brane actions and can provide a description of time-dependent strings/branes and possibly their interactions.

We discuss the nonabelian world-volume action which governs the dynamics of N coincident Dp-branes. In this theory, the branes' transverse displacements are described by matrix-valued scalar fields, and so this is a natural physical framework for the appearance of noncommutative geometry. One example is the dielectric effect by which Dp-branes may be polarized into a noncommutative geometry by external fields. Another example is the appearance of noncommutative geometries in the description of intersecting D-branes of differing dimensions, such as D-strings ending on a D3- or D5-brane.

We find that one of the three parameters (c1) is closely related to the "dilaton charge" and the appearance of the dilaton charge is a consequence of deformations of the boundary condition from that of the boundary state for BPS D-branes. We give three examples of the deformed D-branes by considering the tachyon condensation from systems of [Formula: see text]-branes, unstable D9-branes and unstable D-instantons to the BPS saturated D p-branes, respectively. In string theory, a scalar field often appears as a moduli of a geometrical configuration of D-branes in higher-dimensional space. In the low energy effective theory on D-branes, the distance between D-branes is translated into the energy scale of the gauge symmetry breaking. In this paper, we study a phenomenological consequence of a possibility that the Higgs field is such a moduli field and the D-brane configuration is stabilized by a stationary motion, in particular, revolution of D-branes on which we live. Then, due to the Coriolis force, Higgs mode is mixed with the angular fluctuation of branes and the Lorentz symmetry is violated in the dispersion relation of the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson mass measurements at LHC experiments give an upper bound [Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text] GeV for the angular frequency of the revolution of D-branes.

We show how matrix-valued collective coordinate fields for the D-branes naturally arise as couplings of a worldsheet σ-model, and that the quantum dynamics require that these couplings be mutually noncommutative. We show that the low-energy effective action for the σ-model couplings describes the propagation of an open string in the background of the multiple D-brane configuration, in which all string interactions between the constituent branes are integrated out and the genus expansion is taken into account, with a matrix-valued coupling. The effective field theory is governed by the non-Abelian Born–Infeld target space action which leads to the standard one for D-brane field theory.

This is the next step of uncovering the relation between string theory and exotic smooth ℝ4. Exotic smoothness of ℝ4 is correlated with D6-brane charges in IIA string theory. We construct wild embeddings of spheres and relate them to a class of topological quantum D p-branes as well to KK theory. These branes emerge when there are nontrivial NS–NS H-fluxes on S3 where the topological classes are determined by wild embeddings S2→S3. Then wild embeddings of higher dimensional p-complexes into Sn correspond to D p-branes. These wild embeddings as constructed by using gropes are basic objects to understand exotic smoothness as well Casson handles. Next we build C⋆-algebras corresponding to the embeddings. Finally we consider topological quantum D-branes as those which emerge from wild embeddings in question. We construct an action for these quantum D-branes and show that the classical limit agrees with the Born–Infeld action such that flat branes = usual embeddings.

In this paper the problem of constructing space–time from string theory is addressed in the context of D-brane physics. It is suggested that the knowledge of discrete configurations of D-branes is sufficient to reconstruct the motivic building blocks of certain Calabi–Yau varieties. The collections of D-branes involved have algebraic base points, leading to the notion of K-arithmetic D-crystals for algebraic number fields K. This idea can be tested for D0-branes in the framework of toroidal compactifications via the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. For the special class of D0-crystals of Heegner type these conjectures can be interpreted as formulae that relate the canonical Néron–Tate height of the base points of the D-crystals to special values of the motivic L-function at the central point. In simple cases the knowledge of the D-crystals of Heegner type suffices to uniquely determine the geometry.

Little groups for preon branes (i.e. configurations of branes with maximal (n-1)/n fraction of survived supersymmetry) for dimensions d=2,3,…,11 are calculated for all massless, and partially for massive orbits. For massless orbits little groups are semidirect product of d-2 translational group Td-2 on a subgroup of ( SO (d-2) × R-invariance) group. E.g. at d=9 the subgroup is exceptional G2 group. It is also argued, that 11D Majorana spinor invariants, which distinguish orbits, are actually invariant under d=2+10 Lorentz group. Possible applications of these results include construction of field theories in generalized spacetimes with brane charges coordinates, different problems of group's representations decompositions, spin-statistics issues.

We examine the cosmology of Randall–Sundrum model in a dynamic setting where scalar fields are present in the bulk as well as the branes. This generates a mechanism similar to that of Goldberger–Wise for radion stabilization and the recovery of late-time cosmology features on the branes. Due to the induced radion dynamics, the inflating branes roll towards the minimum of the radion potential, thereby exiting inflation and reheating the universe. In the slow roll part of the potential, the TeV branes have maximum inflation rate and energy as their coupling to the radion and bulk modes have minimum suppression. Hence, when rolling down the steep end of the potential towards the stable point, the radion field (which appears as the inflaton of the effective 4-D theory in the branes) decays very fast and reheats the universe. This process results in a decrease of the brane's canonical vacuum energy, Λ4. However, at the minimum of the potential Λ4 is small but not necessarily zero and the fine-tuning issue remains. Density perturbation constraints introduce an upper bound on Λ4. Due to the large radion mass and strong suppression to the bulk modes, moduli problems and bulk reheating do not occur. The reheat temperature and a sufficient number of e-folding constraints for the brane-universe are also satisfied. The model therefore recovers the radiation dominated FRW universe.

We study D-branes in the background of a gravitational shock wave. We consider the case of parallel D-branes located on opposite sides with respect to the shock wave. Their interaction is studied by evaluating the cylinder diagram using the boundary states technique. Boundary states are defined at each D-brane and their scalar product is evaluated after propagation through the shock wave. Taking the limit where the gravitational shock wave vanishes, we show that the amplitude evaluated is consistent with the flat spacetime result.

We review some recent results on the extension of the gauge/gravity correspondence to include matter in the fundamental representation by adding D-branes to the supergravity backgrounds. Working in the quenched approximation, in which the D-branes are considered as probes, we show how to compute the meson spectrum for a general case of brane intersections which are dual to supersymmetric gauge theories with matter supermultiplets in several dimensions.

By working with the free energy for the type II supergravity near-horizon solution of N coincident non-extremal Dp-branes, we study the transitions among the non-conformal Dp-brane system, the perturbative super-Yang–Mills theory and a certain system associated with M theory. We derive a relation between this free energy and the action of a Dp-brane probe in the N Dp-brane background. Constructing the free energy for the five-dimensional black hole labeled by the D1-brane and D5-brane charges, we find the similar relation between it and the action of a D1 or D5 brane probe in the D1+D5 brane background. These relations are explained by the massive open strings stretched between the relevant D-branes.

We address the bosonic string pair creation in a system of parallel D p– D p′ (p<p′) branes by applying the path integral formalism. We drive the string pair creation rate by calculating the one-loop vacuum amplitude of the setup in the presence of the background electric field defined over the D p′-brane. It is pointed out that just the components of the electric field defined over the p spatial directions (the common directions along which the both D-branes are extended) give rise to the pair creation.

In this paper, we show that in some important cases, four-dimensional data can be extracted from superstring theory such that (i) the data are Euclidean four-geometries embedded in standard ℝ4, (ii) these data depend on NS and D brane charges of some string backgrounds, (iii) it is of potential relevance to four-dimensional physics, (iv) the compactification and stabilization techniques are not in use, but are rather replaced. We analyze certain configurations of NS and D-branes in the context of SU(2) WZW model and find the correlations with different exotic smoothings of ℝ4. First, the dynamics of D-branes in SU(2) WZW model at finite k, i.e. the charges of the branes, refers to the exoticness of ambient ℝ4. Next, the correspondence between exotic smoothness on four-space, transversal to the world volume of NS5 branes in type IIA, and the number of these NS5 branes follows. Finally, the translation of ten-dimensional string backgrounds to Euclidean four-spaces embedded as open subsets in the standard ℝ4 is achieved.

We show that the renormalization group flows of the massless superstring modes in the presence of fluctuating D-branes satisfy the equations of fluid dynamics. In particular, we show that the D-brane's U(1) field is related to the velocity function in the Navier–Stokes equation while the dilaton plays the role of the passive scalar advected by the turbulent liquid. This leads us to suggest a possible isomorphism between the off-shell superstring theory in the presence of fluctuating D-branes and the fluid mechanical degrees of freedom.

The inflationary models developed in presence of a background radiation can be a solution to the reheating problem faced by common cold (isentropic) inflationary scenario. A D-brane system comprising of k Neuvo–Schwarz (NS) 5-branes with a transverse circle and BPS D3-branes with world volume parallel to the NS 5-branes, placed at a point on the transverse circle diametrically to NS 5-brane has a point of unstable equilibrium and the D3-brane has a geometric tachyonic mode associated with displacement of the brane along the circle. Cold inflationary scenario has been studied in connection with this geometric tachyon [S. Panda, M. Sami and S. Tsujikawa, Phys. Rev. D73, 023515 (2006)] where it was found that one needs a background of minimum 104 branes to realize a viable inflationary model. In this piece of work, we have tried to study a model of inflation driven by this geometric tachyon in presence of radiation. We have found that compared to the isentropic scenario, to satisfy the observational bounds, the number of background branes required in this case reduces drastically and a viable model can be obtained with even six to seven NS 5-branes in the background. In this context, we have also analyzed the non-gaussianity associated with the model and observed that the concerned parameter lies well within the observation limit.

Besides ordinary branes such as D-branes, string theory is known to contain exotic branes which are related to ordinary branes by U-duality. Exotic branes are codimension-two objects and have non-trivial U-duality monodromies around them. This means that they are intrinsically non-geometric. Even if one starts with a system only with ordinary branes, exotic branes can be spontaneously generated by the supertube effect. We argue that, if one puts together more than two mutually supersymmetric branes, then, by a multi-stage supertube effect, the system will polarize into an exotic brane extending along an arbitrary surface, dubbed as the superstratum. We conjecture that, black holes in string theory, which are constructed by combining multiple ordinary branes, necessarily include exotic superstrata as their microscopic ingredients. We review the argument for the existence of superstrata and the recent progress toward constructing examples of superstrata in the framework of supergravity in six dimensions.

The possibility of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking by strong coupling gauge interaction in models with D-branes in String Theory is examined. Instead of elementary scalar Higgs doublet fields, the gauge symmetry with strong coupling (technicolor) is introduced. As the first step of this direction, a toy model, which is not fully realistic, is concretely analyzed in some detail. The model consists of D-branes and anti-D-branes at orbifold singularities in (T2 × T2 × T2)/Z3 which preserves supersymmetry. Supersymmetry is broken through the brane supersymmetry breaking. It is pointed out that the problem of large S parameter in dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking scenario may be solved by natural existence of kinetic term mixings between hypercharge U(1) gauge boson and massive anomalous U(1) gauge bosons. The problems to be solved toward constructing more realistic models are clarified in the analysis.

In this paper we review some basic relations of algebraic K theory and we formulate them in the language of D-branes. Then we study the relation between the D8-branes wrapped on an orientable compact manifold W in a massive Type IIA supergravity background and the M9-branes wrapped on a compact manifold Z in a massive d=11 supergravity background from the K-theoretic point of view. By interpreting the D8-brane charges as elements of K0(C(W)) and the (inequivalent classes of) spaces of gauge fields on the M9-branes as the elements of [Formula: see text] where G is a one-dimensional compact group, a connection between charges and gauge fields is argued to exists. This connection could be realized as a composition map between the corresponding algebraic K theory groups.
