The composer Frederic Chopin is connected with Czechia through a number of visits (in Carlsbad, Prague, Děčín, Teplice, and Marienbad) which he spent joyfully meeting his family, who lived in the Russian-occupied Poland. In Czechia, he met and fell deeply in love with Maria Wodzińska, who, unfortunately, did not reciprocate his feelings. In Prague, he became acquainted with Czech national revivalists (Václav Hanka, among others) and with famous composers of the time. In Vienna, the centre of the Habsburg monarchy, he met many Czech composers and befriended the violinist Josef Slavík. Chopin was invited to play in several Czech castles; he received a particularly warm welcome in Děčín. His music teachers in Warsaw were of Czech origin. Chopin’s numerous relationships with Czechia inspired the establishment of the Frederic Chopin Society, the international festival held in Mariánské Lázně (formerly Marienbad), and even musicological symposia. Many Czechs – poets, fiction writers, literary historians, musicians, and music scholars – emphasised how Chopin and his music influenced them. They were inspired by the many notable facts associated with Chopin’s visits and experiences in Czechia and in other locations throughout the Austrian Empire; by his romantic life, democratic thinking, personal qualities, and artistic skills. Various interesting literary works include poetry collections by Kamil Bednář, Jiří Karen, Josef Pávek, Oldřich Zemek, Karla Erbová, and a collection of three novellas by Vladislav Mareš. Apart from writing about Czech Chopin-related works and translating key Polish chopiniana into Czech, the author of this study focuses mainly on the interpretation of the relations between literature and music in the works of the these Polish writers: Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Tadeusz Łopalewski, Janina Siwkowska, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, Jerzy Broszkiewicz, Mira Jaworczakowa and more.

SummaryThe love story of the Přemyslid duke Oldřich (1012–1033, 1034) and the peasant girl Božena Křesinová, who became his second wife, was a popular subject in the Bohemian chronicles of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age. The story’s social and national connotations (Božena being a lower class Czech girl) may have been one of the main factors of its renewed popularity in Czech literature and art since the end of the 18th century. Especially the Czech National Revival gave birth to several works dealing with this topic, such as ballads, romances, dramas, operas and paintings. An absolutely different way of treating the subject was presented by Adolf Heyduk (1835–1923), a representative of the ‘May School’ (Májovci). In his idyll Oldřich a Božena (1879), Heyduk largely ignored the story’s national and social implications and focussed on the love theme. Thus he was also in line with the Májovci poetics being directed against the revivalists’ strictly nationalist and patriotic orientation in literature and culture. Heyduk, moreover, strengthened the work’s symbolic and psychological dimensions, especially in an abundance of nature scenes and in Božena’s songs giving an insight into the girl’s hopes, dreams and latent desires. The work thus gains a new aesthetic quality bringing Oldřich a Božena close to modernistic conceptions.

The aim of the article is to analyze the three letters written in Czech in 1884 and addressed to Polish poet, writer, literature critic, and translator Czesław Jankowski (1857–1929). The author of the letters is a previously unknown Czech woman, the daughter of a schoolteacher in the city of Kladno. She got acquainted with Cz. Jankowski in Krakow and became the object of his passion. The letters are stored in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius. Although the author of this article has already mentioned the existence of these love letters in 2000, J. Hálkova’s letters to Cz. Jankowski have not yet been analyzed.

Slavic narrative of the Austrian literature of the 19th century was an important part of the author's worldview and the structure of the texts of many works. These are folk songs of Slovenes arranged by A. Gruen, allusions of Czech and Moravian legends and tales in the works of A. Stifter and M. Ebner-Eschenbach. Austrian writers intuitively rejected the “friend — foe” dilemma. Since childhood, the artistic world of Slavic culture was not alien to them, since they were actively attached to it. This circumstance can be explained by the peculiarity of the evolution of the Austrian Empire, which developed in the course of a long historical development. Because of this, Austrian literature was open not only to genetic and linguistic penetration, but also to the perception of other cultural layers, in particular, those associated with Slavic mythology. Slovenian semantics is introduced into the texts by A. Gruen (a Christmas carol as a wish for good, a dove as a symbol of love, King Marko as a public defender). A. Stifter implicitly refers to the Czech legends (Vitiko is a just ruler, the Field as an expression of the spirit of the forest and the world). Ebner-Eschenbach tells about the morals and problems of the Moravian village through the structure of a folk tale.

An expanding literature on money and identity is built around the assumption that political elites deliberately use currency design to foster national identities. However, the empirical evidence in favor of this assumption has been fragmentary. Drawing on detailed primary sources we demonstrate nationalist intentions of political elites involved in currency design. We also examine how political elites use banknotes as official pronouncements on who is and who is not part of the nation and what the official attitude toward foreigners is. By tracing changes in the inclusive and exclusive messages directed at an intra-state or international audience we document that there is no connection between ingroup (national) love and outgroup (foreigners, minorities, opposition) hate. The amount of exclusive messages to outgroups culminated in conditions of perceived threat when political leaders tried to mobilize pre-existing identities to secure or maintain political power. In contrast, the officials deliberately tried to broaden ingroup boundaries in order to build international communities. Finally, we document that in the case of limited support for the new conception of identity, officials tried to depict the old and the new identity as complementary, embedding the new identity in existing discourses.

The process of Czech and Moravian immigration to Texas is a well-known phenomenon. Since 1848, tens of thousands decided to cross the ocean to seek a better future in the “Lone Star state.“ Although their history is well documented, there are still themes to be explored. Their religious activity and the connection it has created with their metropolis is one of them. The church and its institutions sent priests to America to attend to the immigrants in their mother tongue and helped them preserve their cultural identity. Furthermore, they organized the construction of their sacred places that would remind the parishioners of their home country. One example could be the famous painted churches still present in Texas today. This topic has not received proper attention from historians because it requires studying sources on both sides of the Atlantic. The presented contribution tries to change this unflattering fact using the microhistorical approach. Its aim is threefold. First, explain the historical dimension of the religious connection between the Czech and Moravian immigrants in Texas with their metropolis. Second, describe the sacred places of the immigrants, how they were built, what role they played in their everyday life, and how they established a bond with their country of origin. Third, what importance did the sacred places of the Czechs and Moravians have in preserving their language and cultural identity? The microhistorical approach demands the use of various and fragmented sources, and this study will be no exception. It will use archive material from Austria and the Czech Republic, principally the funds of the religious organizations that supported the immigrants in Texas, such as the Leopoldine Society. Furthermore, the article will use published contemporary personal recounts and secondary literature. The content of these sources will be critically analysed to answer the research questions and hopefully contribute to the theme of religion and its invaluable role in an immigrant society.

This article examines a Slavic historical and cultural phenomenon of the twentieth century — the multilingual Orthodox literature of the Second Polish Republic, otherwise known as interwar Poland. This literature became a full-fledged successor to the colossal religious and national-cultural heritage of the Orthodox peoples of the Russian Empire that had developed before the Empire’s collapse. Despite the harsh anti-Orthodox policy of the authorities of the new, revived-in-1918 Poland, which included huge territories with indigenous Belarusian and Ukrainian populations, conditions of religious life there were more tolerant than those in the USSR, where the religion experienced huge pressure, often reducing it to a semi-underground or even underground existence. During the two interwar decades in the Second Polish Republic, a huge amount of printed and handwritten Orthodox literature was generated, designed for the widest segments of the population, who spoke and read both East and West Slavic languages in addition to Church Slavonic. The main target of this literature was the Belarusian and Ukrainian peasantry, which made up about 93% of all Orthodox Christians in interwar Poland, the total number of which was close to 5 million people — 12% of the country's population. Orthodox literature of the Second Polish Republic did not lose its significance as time passed; it spread widely in the world, and its works are still reprinted and rewritten in many states, including modern Russia.

The joys of the Czech avant-garde.On the amalgamation of literature, art and philosophy based on the examples from the works of Jindřich Štyrský, Toyen,Vítězslav Nezval and František DrtikolThe article points out some recurrent themes in the literary and artistic works by the repre- sentatives of the Czech avant-garde of the first half of the twentieth century. It is primarily about the motives of sleep, life, death and eroticism recognized most often in iconoclastic conventions, often on the borders of pornographic description and violating the taboo of eroticism, pleasures of the flesh and religion. In the case of Štyrský, among other topics, the theory of artificialism for- mulated by him and Toyen is discussed. The theory had a close relationship with the poetry, prose and art by this author. On the other hand, based on the example of Nezval, an image of literary pleasures is presented, associated with the often actuated by the author issues of first love and erot- ic sensations. In the end, the figure of František Drtikol is outlined — the creator of photographs, which often depict threads of femme fatale and scandalous nude crucified women.

The article highlights the creative profile of the Ukrainian writer Yevhenia Yaroshyns’ka (1868–1904) as a translator. Literary science has not touched upon this topic yet. The only exception is her translations of the Czech writer and teacher Vilma Sokolova. Speaking about Y. Yaroshyns’ka’s interest to the literature of other nations, we state that it was organically connected with her great love for reading. That array was naturally dominated by German translations of the world literature. Joining this activity seemed tempting, because it was also a way to gain experience, to test her own strength and the opportunity to promote the problems of the Ukrainian reality. This is the main reason for Y. Yaroshynska’s appeal to create the German translation of Hryhoriy Machtet’s novel «The White Lady» based on the Ukrainian material. The article clarifies the life and activities of this Ukrainian and Russian writer and his connections with the Ukrainian socio-cultural environment, which also led to the autobiographical aspect of the story. The work is full of sympathy for the participants of the Polish uprising of 1863 and the desire for peaceful understanding between the Slavs. At the same time, it was based on a romantic collision. To obtain the permission to publish the translation, Y. Yaroshyns’ka addressed M. Pavlyk who asked in Moscow Nestor Yavorovs’kyi, apparently the Ukrainian student (from the circle of A. Kryms’kyi), who helped the writer to realize her idea. In the article the letters of N. Yavorovs’kyi and H. Machtet to Y. Yaroshyns’ka are published for the first time and their destiny is outlined. When they got to M. Pavlyk, he prepared them for publication, but they never saw the light. The further fate of the translation of «The White Lady» remained unknown. The article names the published examples of Y. Yaroshyns’ka’s translation activity (these are the translations from Bulgarian, Norwegian, Czech languages). The need for a more comprehensive study of this important and interesting topic is also required. The article touches upon the importance to intensify the efforts of scholars to master the body of archival documents related to Y. Yaroshyns’ka. They are stored mainly in the Department of Manuscripts and Textology of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv and the V. Stefanyk Lviv National Scientific Library. Obviously, only in this way – having thoroughly studied the source base, knowing the author’s biography and her artistic heritage – we can hope for deeper understanding of the peculiarities of the development of her creative personality.

Summary The present article ties in with an earlier study by Chomsky (1970) on nominalizations in English, which was then refined primarily in the influential work of Jane Grimshaw (1990) and is dealt with in detail in Borer (2013) and in Kosta (2020). In contrast to the English gerundives, which do not lose verbal behavior due to the derivation in the syntax and maintain all grammatical categories and characteristics of verbs, which is why one can speak of a real conversion while preserving the verbal semantics, the situation is somewhat different in Czech. In the deverbal, deadjective and other derivations, the Czech apparently made the transition to the noun with its critical properties, which is shown by certain restrictions in the aspectuality marking of deverbal noun phrases on -ní-, -tí-, which, e. g., do not pass the progression durativity test (Vendler 1967). In passive constructions, as is well known, a valence point in the position of the external argument is reduced compared to the corresponding active sentences, while the external argument position in anti-causatives is also not available in the deep structure. In addition to the syntactic restrictions that are evident in nominalizations in the context of simple sentences of different sentence types (causative, anti-causative, passive) and demonstrate the nominal character of certain types of deverbal noun phrases in the first part of this article, the second part of the essay deals with more complex structures and extends its analytical and theoretical part to the phenomenon of nominalizing subordinate clauses. The aim of the central part of this contribution is therefore to test the nominal properties of embedded conjunctional sentences and of embedded headless relative sentences on the basis of empirical data and thus contribute to the knowledge of whether certain types of relative sentences can (or must) be nominalized.

In the course of its history, Prague has been the site of many significant cultural confrontations and conversations. From the medieval chronicle of Cosmas to the work of contemporary writers, the city has taken shape in literature as a multivalent space where identities are constructed and questioned. The evolution of Prague's literary significance has taken place in an intercultural context: both Czech-speaking and German-speaking writers have engaged with the city and its past, and their texts have interacted with each other. The city has played a central part in many collective narratives in which myth, history and literature intertwine. Looking at contemporary prose fiction written in both Czech and German, this thesis explores continuities and contrasts in the literary roles played by Prague. It analyses two German-speaking emigrant authors, Libuše Moníková (1945-1998) and Jan Faktor (1951- ), viewing them alongside three Czech writers, Jáchym Topol (1962- ), Daniela Hodrová (1946- ), and Michal Ajvaz (1949- ). Through close readings of eight texts, the thesis approaches the imagined city from four angles. It discusses how contemporary authors portray the search for meaning in the city by imagining Prague as two contrasting realms (the 'real' city and the 'other' city), how the discontinuities of the city are reflected by the fragmentation of the authorial stance, how these authors assemble new Prague myths from the vestiges of older topoi, and how they confront the contradictory urges to uphold the boundaries of the city and to transgress them. In post-1989 Prague, authors explore the unstable spaces between continuity and discontinuity, constructing an authorial ethos in these areas of tension.

The following is a novella that depicts a young man and woman in search of differing goals, but the essence of their goals does have something in common: each of their pursuits, if obtained, allows for self-control and recovered lifestyle. However, their lives are far from average throughout the story. Themes such as bulimia, drug use, loveless sex, voyeurism, lucid dreaming and emergency room healthcare are explored in the form of fiction. Both of the main characters in this story explore their world with a measure of obsession, and like any worthy character, their obsessions transform into decisions and actions that highlight aspects of society and psychology; in this case it is American college culture and youthful minds. It is up to the reader to become an explorer also. S/he may turn the pages with an objective mind, or with a sympathetic one. Either will be presented with the same questions: questions concerning self-image, companionship, healthcare socioeconomics, and deviant behavior.

Annotation:
This dissertation responds to the question, "What would it be like, what would it mean, to approach texts lovingly?" in terms of the work of 20th-century theorists, writers, and thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Luce Irigaray, Helene Cixous, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Brian Massumi, Jean-Luc Marion, E. E. Cummings, Rainer Maria Rilke, Teresa Brennan, and W. J. T. Mitchell. In order to demonstrate the appropriateness and place of love in the philosophical canon, the dissertation combines a consideration of affect with these writers' work. Beginning with an exemplary reading of Cy Twombly's painting The Ceiling, the then dissertation adapts Mitchell's question "What do pictures want" to an approach to texts, as defined with reference to Barthes. An introduction and literature review trace the places love in texts by Plato, Freud, Lacan, Cixous, and a host of writers who fall under the rubric of 'affect theorists'. Because an approach to texts is the dissertation's focus, a chapter is spent discussing the possibilities for deconstruction to be part of such an approach. Derrida's work is constellated with that of Cixous, Irigaray, Marion, and Brennan in order to emphasise the integrity of sensory and affective information to such an approach. The writing of Rilke and Cummings provides examples of an authorial approach to texts that can inform a readerly one, and serves to further expand the canon of texts that suggest the possibility of this approach. The final chapter is a second exemplary reading of the story of Moses and the burning bush. Deliberately aiming to stretch the expectations of scholarly work, I combine the anecdotal, the affective, and the textual as modes of engaging with and ways of knowing about love.

Women these days play many different roles. One could say that it is the sign of the time but despite the advances that our foremothers had made, the women of this decade are working harder than ever. In this collection of stories, the protagonist is one of these modern women, and she goes through many stages of her life. In her quest for a peaceful place in an often violent, unpredictable, and sadistic world, she faces many challenges; and she finds that love, sex, betrayal, fear, and desire are inevitably the basis for any friendship, whether platonic or romantic. Two of the stories, "The Neighbor-woman on the Balcony" and "The Love of Men and Women" are part of a cycle. The rest of the collection, are stand-alone pieces, but they are intrinsically connected by mature, ordinary love.

In my study on Barbara Pym's novels, the focus is first on the two basic ironies in love-marriage relations: irony of dilemma in which marriage is seen as the end of romantic love; and irony of situation in which excellent but plain-looking women are deprived of the chance to express their basic need for love. Chapter I of this study introduces the major themes and ironies in Pym's novels and the nature and functions of her irony. The following six chapters examine the two major ironies in six of Pym's twelve novels: Some Tame Gazelle, Excellent Women, Jane and Prudence, Less Than Angels, A Glass of Blessings, and A Few Green Leaves. While discussing the uniqueness of each of Pym's heroines, I also explore how Pym underwent changes in her views of love and marriage and how she attempted to keep a balance between her romanticism and her sense of irony. Pym's other six novels are discussed in Chapter VIII, the concluding chapter.

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the work of Iyo Soga, the author of “connected stanzas” (renga). The ways of presenting love lyrics in the poem Sogi dokugin nanihito hyakuin (One hundred stanzas of the poet Sogi, 1499) are highlighted. The issues of the influence of the previous classical literature on the poet’s work, the specifics of intra-literary continuity in the history of medieval Japanese verse are discussed. The implicit meanings of love stanzas are revealed. Precedent texts with which the stanzas of the poem establish associative links are found. Intertextuality acts as the meaning-forming beginning of renga poetry.

В статье рассматриваются несколько произведений лагерной литературы как доказательство неразрывной связи темы любви и веры с темой концентрационных лагерей. Основой тезиса является труд психолога и бывшего лагерного заключенного Виктора Франкла. A few works belonging to camp literature genre are viewed as a proof of an indissoluble connection between the theme of love and faith and the theme of concentration camps. The basis of the thesis is a work by a psychologist and former concentration camp prisoner Viktor Frankl.

Annotation:
On the occasion of the centenary of the First World War, remembered across the world from 2014 until the end of 2018, many aspects and experiences of this global conflict have been re-examined or brought to light for the first time, as we honour the memory of those estimated 16 million soldiers and civilians who perished in what was then known as the ‘Great War’, or the ‘War to End All Wars’. So many of these died on the infamous fields of Flanders, where Allied and Central Forces dug themselves into trenches for the better part of four years. Over the past few years, new research has brought to light many insights into the plight of animals in this War, which – for the younger readers amongst you – was fought at the dawn of motorised warfare, using anything powered by two or four feet or paws, from the homing pigeons delivering secret messages across enemy lines, to the traction provided by oxen and mules to pull cannons and other heavy artillery, to the horses of the cavalry. Not least among these roles was the supply of animal protein to the troops, whether this came through the specific designation of animals for this purpose or as the result of a failed attempt at delivering any of the above services. Several leading publications today have documented the role (and suffering) of animals in ‘La Grande Guerre’. Less so the role of veterinarians in the ‘War to End All Wars’. Who were they? How many? How were they organised? What did they do, on either side of the enemy lines? The present article is a humble attempt to shed some light on these veterinary colleagues, based on available, mostly grey, literature…

The Changing Shape of the World Automobile Industry: A Multilayer Network Analysis of International Trade in Components and Parts. In 2018, after 25 years of the North America Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the United States requested new rules which, among other requirements, increased the regional con-tent in the production of automotive components and parts traded between the three part-ner countries, United States, Canada and Mexico. Signed by all three countries, the new trade agreement, USMCA, is to go into force in 2022. Nonetheless, after the 2020 Presi-dential election, the new treaty's future is under discussion, and its impact on the automo-tive industry is not entirely defined. Another significant shift in this industry – the acceler-ated rise of electric vehicles – also occurred in 2020: while the COVID-19 pandemic largely halted most plants in the automotive value chain all over the world, at the reopen-ing, the tide is now running against internal combustion engine vehicles, at least in the an-nouncements and in some large investments planned in Europe, Asia and the US. The definition of the pre-pandemic situation is a very helpful starting point for the analysis of the possible repercussions of the technological and geo-political transition, which has been accelerated by the epidemic, on geographical clusters and sectorial special-isations of the main regions and countries. This paper analyses the trade networks emerg-ing in the past 25 years in a new analytical framework. In the economic literature on inter-national trade, the study of the automotive global value chains has been addressed by us-ing network analysis, focusing on the centrality of geographical regions and countries while largely overlooking the contribution of countries' bilateral trading in components and parts as structuring forces of the subnetwork of countries and their specific position in the overall trade network. The paper focuses on such subnetworks as meso-level structures emerging in trade network over the last 25 years. Using the Infomap multilayer clustering algorithm, we are able to identify clusters of countries and their specific trades in the automotive internation-al trade network and to highlight the relative importance of each cluster, the interconnec-tions between them, and the contribution of countries and of components and parts in the clusters. We draw the data from the UN Comtrade database of directed export and import flows of 30 automotive components and parts among 42 countries (accounting for 98% of world trade flows of those items). The paper highlights the changes that occurred over 25 years in the geography of the trade relations, with particular with regard to denser and more hierarchical network gener-ated by Germany’s trade relations within EU countries and by the US preferential trade agreements with Canada and Mexico, and the upsurge of China. With a similar overall va-riety of traded components and parts within the main clusters (dominated respectively by Germany, US and Japan-China), the Infomap multilayer analysis singles out which com-ponents and parts determined the relative positions of countries in the various clusters and the changes over time in the relative positions of countries and their specialisations in mul-tilateral trades. Connections between clusters increase over time, while the relative im-portance of the main clusters and of some individual countries change significantly. The focus on US and Mexico and on Germany and Central Eastern European countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) will drive the comparative analysis.
