The majority of repertoire catalogs for singers, printed and digital, often list works by voice type, language, and/or genre. The 21st century has seen an emergence of online classical music catalogs where the user can seek repertoire by searching composers from underrepresented communities (i.e., women, Black, LGBTQ, Latinx). What does not currently exist is a resource that catalogs songs for solo voice dealing specifically with gay subject matter. This dissertation surveys seventeen 21st century gay-themed art songs by four living American composers: David Del Tredici, Ben Moore, Clint Borzoni, and Gary Schocker. Each chapter introduces a different composer and a select representation of their gay-themed art songs. Each entry includes text analysis based on the composer's and author's intentions and a brief analysis to determine pedagogical and musical difficulty. It is my intent that this document will facilitate a much-needed resource and encourage further study, promotion, and performance of voice works with gay themes. Moreover, I hope that it will serve as a tool for the applied voice teacher to assist in the vocal and artistic development of their students through broader repertoire choices.

In June 2013 the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI) hosted its inaugural Contemporary Performance Studies program. The ten-day event offered student and emerging artist singers and pianists the opportunity to study and perform contemporary works both of their own selection and assigned by the program directors. Among the pieces assigned were works by Vancouver composers, both established professionals and rising talents, that showcased astonishing variety, depth, and excellence in their styles and artistry. The composers at VISI represented the latest generation in a long tradition of art song composition in Canada, but outside of the country's borders, Canada's composers and works are largely unknown. Lack of presence in the international musical canon has unfortunately been a historical issue for Canada. However, as compositional trends have shifted toward neo-tonality, art song in Canada has experienced significant growth in production and performance, particularly in Vancouver. Aided by organizations such as VISI, Canadian art song has been primed to take a prominent position on the international stage.

Sibyl cycles in Northern and Central Italy, in the Early Renaissance. Previous published scholarship listed twenty-two sites. I now know of forty. Twenty-three of these may be considered Early Renaissance works of art and are the subject of this study. This study is not primarily engaged with history of Art but with the history of Ideas. That is, it is not a study of the painters. their methods and status but rather with the study of the development of the genre. its textual sources, the content of the inscribed oracles. the development of the pictorial conventions and symbolism. the transmission of these and the cultural significance of the genre. The dissertation is concerned with artistic styles and techniques only in so far as they illuminate the pictorial origin of the works and their iconographic significance in terms of the ideas conveyed. It describes and defines regional sub-genres. each with clear rules and conventions. These have not previously been identified and no comprehensive national conspectus exists. Structure of the Dissertation The dissertation is in three parts. The first part addresses the nature and origin of Sibyls (who and what they were) and their significance in cultural history until the Renaissance. Part Two is concerned with the origins and transmission of text and iconographic conventions in the Renaissance Sibyl cyeles. Pari three is a catalogue and survey of each Sibyl cycle site in Central and Northern Italy, along with a comprehensive photographic record. Great destruction of some cycles has taken place since the 1960s and the compilation of a complete photographic record is urgent and a significant aim of the present work. There are few published coloured photographs of the full cycles. none complete except for Siena. This dissertation is wide in scope and is in large part a catalogue and survey of all known Italian Sibyl cycles. Because of the limitations of a Doctoral dissertation. at times the transition from one site to another may appear abrupt and disjunct. Nonetheless, the structure is logical and careful. Sites are arranged chronologically, according to genre. The reader is directed to the detailed table of contents, if a review of structure and order be required. Research Method The method of research was to form a comprehensive list of Sibyl sites in Italy by consulting published English and Continental books. journals and locally produced historical papers as well as word of mouth advice in Italy. I visited all the sites and made a photographic record. Origin and transmission of text was established by consulting contemporary manuscripts that either specify the oracle text or describe the original Orsini. and other, frescos. These manuscripts are widely scattered in Europe and difficult of access so, where possible, a significant example of each kind of manuscript is reproduced in photographs or photocopy, transcribed and translated in the Appendices to the dissertation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On the way to a contemporary eco-aesthetic. My thesis consists of three chapters; the first chapter contains a basic background study and philosophic research of concepts which are relevant to my work; the second chapter is a discussion of ecofeminism as political and spiritual phenomena (my work resorts in the genre of ecofeminism); and the third chapter is an analytic consideration and discussion where my works are presented as a visual explanation of my own interpretation of the dialogue between art and science with underlying geographical and ecological concepts. Some of these concepts purport the ritual of cycles and the aesthetic experience thereof. They deal with the earth as maternal patron where the layers of society (evidence of existence) becomes evident in the layering of the earth. This evidence of existence can be found in the waste generated from the cyclic existence of living beings and organisms. In addition, the traditional scrub or healing activities which are ascribed to women, are used as an argument to effectuate a consciousness of symbioses.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: My tesis bestaan uit drie hoofstukke; die eerste hoofstuk behels 'n basiese agtergrondstudie en filosofiese ondersoek na konsepte wat na my mening betrekking het op my werk; die tweede hoofstuk is 'n bespreking oor ekofeminisme as politieke en spirituele verskynsel (my werk ressorteer onder ekofeminisme as genre); en die derde hoofstuk 'n analitiese beskouing en bespreking waar my werk aangebied word as visuele verduideliking van my persoonlike interpretasie van die dialoog tussen kuns en wetenskap met onderliggende geografiese en ekologiese konsepte. Van hierdie konsepte gaan oor die ritueel van siklusse en die estetiese belewenis daarvan. Dit handeloor die aarde as die moederskoot waar die lae van samelewings (bewyse van bestaan) gelees kan word in die gelaagdheid van die aarde. Hierdie bewyse van bestaan kan gevind word in die afval wat gegenereer word uit die sikliese bestaanswyse van lewende wesens en organismes. Hiermee saam word die tradisionele skrop- of helende aktiwiteite wat aan vroue toegeken word, as argument gebruik om 'n bewussyn van simbiose te bewerkstellig.

This paper discusses the fresco decoration of Santa Maria ad Cryptas. The frescoes are described and analyzed, and then compared to similar programs in order to determine which features are based on earlier sources, and which are unusual or unique to this particular church. The traditional features are found to reflect a long-established pattern of church decoration reflected in such monuments as Old Saint Peter’s, Sant’Angelo in Formis, the Cathedral of Monreale, and the Cappella Palatina. The unusual features (including the placement of the Passion cycle in the presbytery, and the location of the Crucifixion over the altar) are explained as modifications that emphasize themes of local importance, or of special significance to the patron. The Fossa frescoes utilize programmatic elements, such as the Old and New Testament narrative cycles, to explain sacred history as it related to a medieval man of the patron’s class and profession.

Les cycles et les séries à sujets profanes, exécutés entre 1730 et 1774, révèlent l’évolution de l’idéal de la peinture et de la réalité de sa pratique, entraînée par la popularisation desmode de réception des Beaux-Arts. Malgré des préjugés qui considèrent la peinture de cette période comme simplement décorative, les artistes, conscients de leur liberté de création, due à l’élargissement du public, élaborent soigneusement les programmes iconographique et stylistique qui témoignent de leurs talents propres. Les décors peints reflètent la conjoncture des intentions des commanditaires, des ambitions des peintres et des réactions du public. La peinture d’histoire, dont le prestige n’est jamais mis en doute, est susceptible d’une interprétation libre sous l’influence d’autres genres. La diversification du public du Salon et la critique d’art amènent une opposition entre amateurs et critiques. La direction royale des Bâtiments du roi incite les artistes à l’émulation. Sa réforme, qui vise au progrès des Arts, ne réside pas dans le simple retour à l’antique ou au XVIIe siècle, mais dans l’invention d’une peinture des Lumières par l’introduction d’une dimension sociale, marquée par l’idéal des encyclopédistes. Les difficultés que rencontrent les décors peints des châteaux royaux et des résidences des maîtresses en titre, révèlent la complexité de la réception des œuvres, particulière à l’époque du développement des institutions modernes et de la diversification des espaces dans l’architecture profane. Cycles and series of secular subjects, painted between 1730 and 1774, reveal an evolution of the ideal of painting and the reality of its practice, led by a popularization of the mode of reception of Fine Arts. Despite some prejudices that consider the painting of this period as simply decorative, artists, who are conscious of their liberty of creation, granted by an extension of the public, produce carefully iconographic and stylistic programs which show their peculiar talents. Painted ensembles, made for specific interiors, reflect complicated circumstances of patron’s intentions, painter’s ambition and reactions of the public. History painting, of which prestige is never doubted, is open to free interpretation under the influence of others genres. Diversification of the public of the Salon and development of art criticism bring an opposition between amateurs and critics. The Bâtiments du roi tries to encourage a competitive spirit by artists. Its reform, which aims at progress of Fine Arts, is not a simple return to the Antiquity or the seventeenth-century, but is the invention of the painting of Enlightenment by introducing social meanings, which convey the ideal of the encyclopedists. Difficulties, encountered by large ensembles of interior paintings of royal castles and of official mistresses’ residences, reveal a complexity of artistic creation, proper to this period of development of modern institutions and diversification of spaces in secular architecture. The ambition of Bâtiments to unify various tastes of public will be made into the Museum, making use of national sentiment

Spanish composer María Teresa Prieto (1895-1982) belongs to a group of Spanish exiles who left their country for Mexico as a result of the Spanish Civil War. She arrived in Mexico in 1936 and developed her compositional career in there. Her first composition after her arrival in the new country was the song cycle Seis Melodías, a work that includes six songs with poetry by Ricardo de Alcázar, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca, and María Teresa Prieto herself. This document analyzes each one of the songs, both musically and poetically, as well as the relationship between music and text. Seis Melodías' structural organization as a cycle is very particular, since Prieto organized the cycle in pairs—namely I and II, III and IV, and V and VI—each group with strong poetic and thematic unity. The songs belonging to this cycle, present the duality of being independent and dependent at the same time, given that each song stands by itself, but together they create a meta-narrative that progresses from hope to desolation, not as a political statement, but as a homage to, as well as a lament, for the Spanish land and freedom. The cyclical nature of this work is accomplished by Prieto through motivic unity, a clear harmonic plan, and poetic relationships between the songs.

La thèse isole un corpus particulièrement large dans l'Europe romantique, constitué de fictions à récit-cadre oral nocturne organisées en « veillées », « nuits » ou « soirées ». Ce constat bibliographique fait apparaître un paradoxe : la littérature de l'époque romantique rêve-t-elle encore de pratiques orales alors que s'inaugurent au même moment le fonctionnement moderne de l'ordre des livres et sa régulation par des techniques commerciales ? Comment conjuguer l'idée du sacre de l'écrivain et la nostalgie apparente pour le récit de vive voix ? Le cycle de fictions nocturnes semble d'abord une survivance ou une nostalgie des formes plurimillénaires de narration orale (Le Pantchatrantra, Les Mille et une nuits) : les auteurs ressusciteraient la technique du récit encadré pour mieux profiter de la vitalité associée à l'échange direct ainsi simulé dans ces textes. Pourtant, l'étude de ce corpus montre que la relecture romantique n'a rien d'un archaïsme. D'abord, le cycle nocturne est en réalité une forme intermédiaire entre la tradition littéraire et les modifications contemporaines du champ : parfaitement adaptées à la publication journalistique, les fictions nocturnes rétablissent néanmoins une forme d'aura auctoriale en instaurant une ambivalence orale qui suggère une présence directe du conteur. Les « nuits » permettent donc de tirer parti de la mercantilisation croissante du monde des lettres, tout en continuant à bénéficier du prestige des mages romantiques et autres poètes de la nuit
This dissertation isolates in European romantic literature a particularly broad corpus of fictions with an oral frame organized in "watches", "nights" or "evenings". This bibliographic presence underlines a paradox: why does romantic literature still dream of oral practices whereas at the same time are inaugurated the modern textualisation of literature and its regulation by commercial techniques? How to combine the idea of the sacre of the writer and the nostalgia for direct speech ? The cycle of night fictions seems initially a survival or a sign of nostalgia of the antique forms of oral narration (Panchatrantra, Thousand and One Nights) : the authors appear to resurrect the technique of the frame narrative to benefit from the vitality associated with the direct exchange simulated in these texts. However, the study of this corpus shows that this romantic intertextual reading has nothing to do with a taste for archaism. Initially, the nocturnal cycle is actually an intermediate form between the literary tradition and the contemporary modifications of the literary context : it is perfectly adapted to publication in the press, but nevertheless makes it possible to restore a form of auctorial aura auctoriale by establishing an oral ambivalence which suggests a direct presence of the storyteller. The "nights" thus allow the author to adapt to the increasing mercantilisation of the literary world, while continuing to profit from the prestige associated to the romantic magi and other « poets of the night »

Au milieu du XIVème siecle apparaissent les premiers cycles iconographiques de la vie de Saint Antoine ermite, le père Égyptien des moines. Ce phénomène, qui correspond à l'apogée du culte du Saint en occident grâce notamment au prosélytisme des chanoines de l'ordre de Saint Antoine, connait un développement important jusqu'au XVIème siècle, particulièrement dans le sud-est de la France et dans l'Italie septentrionale et centrale. En témoigne un corpus d'une quarantaine de cycles d'origines variées : manuscrits destinés à l'élite religieuse, retables de patriciens ou de riches confréries, fresques de chapelles rurales ou de communautés réformées. Les raisons de cette émergence et de ce déclin, aussi impromptus l'une que l'autre, révèlent la coïncidence de l'intérêt populaire pour un Saint thaumaturge et justicier et de celui des ordres, essentiellements des mendiants, pour ce modèle de sainteté érémitique des débuts du christianisme. L'occidentalisation progressive de l'ermite passe ainsi par deux procédés presque antagonistes : d'une part la substitution a son austerité d'ascète solitaire d'un paternalisme bienveillant quoi qu'intransigeant, d'autre part l'accentuation de son identité de précurseur ayant ouvert la voie du désert. Pour ce faire, l'iconographie, étayée par l'invention de légendaires apocryphes, propose un vecteur de diffusion privilégié à l'attention des commanditaires. Outre les antonins, qui développent de tels programmes iconographiques surtout dans le premier quart du XVème siècle, les augustins et les franciscains reformes vont se faire les principaux initiateurs du phenomene, trouvant avec la personnalite d'Antoine, dans leur quête d'un exemple antérieur à leurs fondateurs eux-mêmes, une caution pour justifier l'orientation de leurs choix spirituels et de leurs modes de vie. En ce sens, le redécouverte du Saint servit plus de support a une reforme interne des courants ascétiques de la fin du Moyen-Age qu'au renouveau même de leurs doctrines. C'est aussi en quoi ce phénomène iconographique particulier semble emblématique d'un processus d'appropriation plus général, conduisant à faire des Saints les plus éloignés dans le temps et l'espace, des figures initiatiques et exemplaires, rajeunies par une relecture totale de leur existence.

Notre thèse propose une réflexion sur une stratégie de mise au travail d’élèves à risque de décrochage. Elle s’attache à étudier la mise en place d’un dispositif d’éducation artistique et culturelle en cycles 2 et 3.L’analyse de ce dernier, aboutissant à la création de quatre albums, tente de mettre en exergue les résultats de notre médiation pédagogique. Plus particulièrement, notre étude se propose d’observer, comprendre et accompagner la mise au travail des élèves sous-réalisateurs, au sein d’ateliers d’écriture et d’arts visuels, pour apprendre en agissant et en créant. Nous avons donc envisagé de les mettre au travail grâce à une activité de créativité permettant de les impliquer afin qu’ils retrouvent un intérêt pour les apprentissages fondamentaux. Ainsi, lors d’activités animées par un auteur-illustrateur, il a été question de repérer l’engagement de ces élèves. Notre cadre théorique et méthodologique d’analyse des données du «cours d’expérience» s’appuie sur les traces de leur activité.Les données de cette étude longitudinale ont été recueillies au cours d’observations directes dans une classe faisant l’objet d’un suivi de cohorte d’élèves, du CE1 au CM2. Les hypothèses sont celles de la mise au travail par la créativité définissant le processus émergeant de ce dispositif de création d’albums favorisant l’accès au monde de l’imaginaire. Il apparaît clairement que l’adaptation au milieu a aidé ces élèves à mieux s'intégrer et devenir des acteurs en s’inspirant de leurs champs d’intérêt. Ils ont su mobiliser la référence picturale pour construire leurs histoires et s’inspirer de leur propre vécu pour en faire de la fiction. Cette recherche démontre combien les élèves sous-réalisateurs ont pu être encouragés à se remobiliser sur les savoirs à l’aide de ce processus de créativité. In our thesis consideration could be given to a strategy in order to re-engage « early school leaving » pupils. It focuses on a mediation in an experimental class of arts and cultural education, in cycles 2 and 3, developed as a tool for school mobilization. The analysis of this device, leading to the creation of four albums in children's literature, tries to highlight the results of our educational mediation. Specifically, our study sets out to observe, understand and support underachieving pupils (from 7 to 11 years old) in a school within a socio-economically disadvantaged area. We were able to identify, within writing and visual arts workshops, how pupils became engaged in activities, in order to learn by doing and creating.Pupils actively participated in classwork comprising an activity of creativity allowing them to become motivated to learn. So, the study focused on whether this increased engagement was due to taking part in activities with an author-illustrator.Our theoretical and methodological framework for analysis of data from the "process of experience" is based on activity tracks (what is emerging from the pre-reflexive consciousness). The data in thislongitudinal study were collected during direct observations in a classroom (from the 2nd year to the 5th year of primary school).. The study hypothesis argues that increased pupil engagement was as a result of the creative process involved in the creation of albums promoting access to the world of imagination. In addition these pupils became more integrated into the life of the school. They became actors by being inspired by their own fields of interest. They learned how to articulate the required pictorial reference needed for their stories. The pupils were inspired to see their own real-life experience being used as the basis of a work of fiction.This study demonstrates how underachieving pupils could be encouraged to re-engage with school through participation in this creative process. Further research is required to find out whether this creative approach could be adopted in other areas of the curriculum to support the integration of underachieving pupils in school

La présente thèse a comme sujet les icônes hagiographiques exécutées du début du XVe à la fin du XVIIe siècle dans l'île de Crète qui était sous domination vénitienne depuis 1210. La prise de Constantinople par les Ottomans en 1453 a privé l'empire byzantin de son centre et la Crète, où plusieurs peintres constantinopolitains se sont réfugiés, a développé, sous leur influence, l'art du chevalet dans des ateliers organisés sur le modèle des ateliers occidentaux. La présente étude inclut 74 icônes de 26 saints. Dans l'introduction, la présentation du sujet est suivie de l'intégration des œuvres dans leur contexte historique et artistique, de la présentation de l'état de la recherche et de J'approche méthodologique. Le texte s'articule en quatre chapitres. Le premier inclut une présentation de la fréquence de l'illustration des saints sur les icônes, de la répartition des œuvres par siècle, de la localisation des peintres connus et des commanditaires d'après des inscriptions dédicatoires. Le deuxième aborde l'évolution de la typologie quant à la disposition du cycle hagiographique du saint par rapport à la représentation centrale, au nombre des compartiments et le rapport avec celui des épisodes illustrés, les modes de délimitation des compartiments et la mise en place des épisodes illustrés. Le troisième chapitre étudie en détail l'évolution de l'iconographie des scènes, de la constitution des cycles et de la diffusion des formules iconographiques, avec comme point de départ les cycles des saints Georges et Nicolas. The present thesis is about vita icons executed from the beginning of the 15th to the end of the 17th c. on the island of Crete which was under Venetian rule since 1210. The capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453 deprived the Byzantine empire of its center and Crete, where several Constantinopolitan painters have taken refuge, has developed, under their influence, the art of the icons painting in workshops organized on the mode] of Western workshops. This study includes 74 icons of 26 saints. ln the Introduction, the presentation of the subject is followed by the integration of the works in their historical and artistic context, the presentation of the state of the research and the methodological approach. The text is divided into 4 chapters. The 1st includes a presentation of the frequency of illustration of saints on icons, the distribution of works by century, the location of known painters and sponsors based on dedicatory inscriptions. The 2nd deals with the evolution of the typology as to the disposition of the hagiographic cycle of the saint in relation to the central representation, the number of compartments and the relationship with that of the illustrated episodes, the modes of delimitation of the compartments and the establishment of the illustrated episodes. The 3d chapter studies in detail the evolution of the iconography of the scenes, the constitution of the cycles and the diffusion of the iconographic formulas, with as starting point the cycles of saints Georges and Nicolas. The study of the evolution of the iconography of the cycles of ail the icons, according to the chronological order of the works, is addressed in the 4th chapter

La thèse est basée sur cinq articles originaux publiés ou présentés dans des journaux. Les principaux résultats sont les suivants. Nous introduisons la coloration propre d'arcs avec des sommet-distingué dans les graphes orientés. Nous avons proposé une conjecture sur le nombre arc-chromatique sommet-distingué et nous avons aussi donné quelque résultats partiels. Nous avons étendu un résultat de Razborov en prouvant que la conjecture de Caccetta-Häggkvist est vraie pour certains graphes orientés avec des sous-graphes interdits. Nous avons montré que chaque tournoi biparti avec degré sortant minimum au moins qr-1 contient r cycles de sommets-disjoints de toutes longueurs possibles. In this thesis, we study arc colorings and cycles in digraphs. The following topics are considered: vertex-distinguishing proper arc colorings in digraphs, short cycles in digraphs with forbidden subgraphs , disjoint cycles in bipartite tournaments, cycle factors in regualr bipartite tournaments and universal arcs in tournaments. The main results are contained in five original articles published or submitted to an international journal. We introduce vertex-distinguishing proper arc colorings of digraphs. A conjecture on the vertex-distinguishing arc-chromatic number is given and some partial results are obtained. We extend a result of Razborov by proving that the Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture is true for digraphs with certain induced forbidden subgraphs or with certain forbidden subgraphs. We show that every bipartite tournament with minimum outdegree at least qr-1 has r vertex disjoint cycles of any given possible lengths. The special case q=2 of the result verifies the bipartite tournament case of the Bermond-Thomassen conjecture. As a partial support of a conjecture on 2-cycle-factors in bipartite tournaments, we prove that every k-regular bipartite tournament B with k>2 has two complementary cycles of lengths 6 and |V(B)|-6, unless B is isomorphic to a special digraph. Besides, we show that every k-connected regular bipartite tournament has a k-cycle-factor. We also give a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of a universal arc in a tournament and characterize all the tournaments in which every arc is universal

Dans cette thèse nous étudions quatre problèmes de théorie des graphes. En particulier,Nous étudions le problème du cycle hamiltonien dans les line graphes, et aussi nous prouvons l’existence de cycles hamiltoniens dans certains sous graphes couvrants d’un line graphe. Notre résultat principal est: Si L(G) est hamiltonien, alors SL(G) est hamiltonien. Grâce à ce résultat nous proposons une conjecture équivalente à des conjectures célèbres. Et nous obtenons deux résultats sur les cycles hamiltoniens disjoints dans les line graphes.Nous considérons alors la bipancyclicité résistante aux pannes des graphes de Cayley engendrés par transposition d’arbres. Nous prouvons que de tels graphes de Cayley excepté le “star graph” ont une bipancyclicité (n − 3)-arête résistante aux pannes.Ensuite nous introduisons la coloration des arcs d’un digraphe sommet distinguant. Nous étudions la relation entre cette notion et la coloration d’arêtes sommet distinguant dans les graphes non orientés. In this thesis, we study four problems in graph theory, the Hamiltonian cycle problem in line graphs, the edge-fault-tolerant bipancyclicity of Cayley graphs generated by transposition trees, the vertex-distinguishing arc colorings in digraph- s and the acyclic arc coloring in digraphs. The first two problems are the classic problem on the cycles in graphs. And the other two arc coloring problems are related to the modern graph theory, in which we use some probabilistic methods. In particular,We first study the Hamiltonian cycle problem in line graphs and find the Hamiltonian cycles in some spanning subgraphs of line graphs SL(G). We prove that: if L(G) is Hamiltonian, then SL(G) is Hamiltonian. Due to this, we propose a conjecture, which is equivalent to some well-known conjectures. And we get two results about the edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles in line graphs.Then, we consider the edge-fault-tolerant bipancyclicity of Cayley graphs generated by transposition trees. And we prove that the Cayley graph generated by transposition tree is (n − 3)-edge-fault-tolerant bipancyclic if it is not a star graph.Later, we introduce the vertex-distinguishing arc coloring in digraphs. We study the relationship between the vertex-distinguishing edge coloring in undirected graphs and the vertex-distinguishing arc coloring in digraphs. And we get some results on the (semi-) vertex-distinguishing arc chromatic number for digraphs and also propose a conjecture about it. To verify the conjecture we study the vertex-distinguishing arc coloring for regular digraphs.Finally, we introduce the acyclic arc coloring in digraphs. We calculate the acyclic arc chromatic number for some digraph families and propose a conjecture on the acyclic arc chromatic number. Then we consider the digraphs with high girth by using the Lovász Local Lemma and we also consider the random regular digraphs. And the results of the digraphs with high girth and the random regular digraphs verify the conjecture

In this paper, an attempt is made to explore the relevance of a consumer confidence index in forecasting business cycles in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the possible heterogeneity regarding the information content of individual questions is addressed, and it is investigated whether this information can be attributed to the information view or to the animal spirits view. This paper constructs a Bayesian VAR (BVAR), which includes a consumer confidence index, the unemployment rate, a composite leading indicator, producer confidence, and the Michigan consumer sentiment index. The results show that for the 24-month-ahead forecast and the 48-month-ahead forecast of unemployment, consumer confidence explains respectively 3.96% - 8.06% and 10.25% - 15.99% of the error variance. Moreover, there seems to be significant heterogeneity among the individual questions in the consumer confidence survey. Finally, it is concluded that the additional predictive power of consumer confidence can be attributed to the information view.

Traditionally, differential-equation models for population dynamics have considered organisms as "fixed" entities in terms of their behaviour and characteristics. However, there have been many observations of adaptivity in organisms, both at the level of behaviour and as an evolutionary change of traits, in response to the environmental conditions. Taking such adaptiveness into account alters the qualitative dynamics of traditional models and is an important factor to be included, for example, when developing reliable model predictions under changing environmental conditions. In this thesis, we consider piecewise-smooth and smooth dynamical systems to represent adaptive change in a 1 predator-2 prey system. First, we derive a novel piecewise-smooth dynamical system for a predator switching between its preferred and alternative prey type in response to prey abundance. We consider a linear ecological trade-off and discover a novel bifurcation as we change the slope of the trade-off. Second, we reformulate the piecewise-smooth system as two novel 1 predator-2 prey smooth dynamical systems. As opposed to the piecewise-smooth system that includes a discontinuity in the vector fields and assumes that a predator switches its feeding strategy instantaneously, we relax this assumption in these systems and consider continuous change in a predator trait. We use plankton as our reference organism because they serve as an important model system. We compare the model simulations with data from Lake Constance on the German-Swiss-Austrian border and suggest possible mechanistic explanations for cycles in plankton concentrations in spring.

Since the UK government's Waste Strategy was introduced in 2000 there has been sustained emphasis on the diversion of waste material from landfill and it has been acknowledged that stable markets for secondary materials must be developed to ensure that the resources used to recover them are not expended needlessly. This thesis looks at the issues surrounding a designer's ability to select secondary materials for the production of new artefacts and proposes a new framework for supporting that activity. While in the past recycled materials have mainly been used either for highly visible 'one-offs' or hidden components the stance taken here is that both creative design and volume production are essential for stable markets in the short term and effective materials cycles in the future. Therefore product and industrial design was the initial focus of this research. The investigation involved three empirical enquiries: Enquiry 1 employed a survey method to explore the design scenario of product and industrial designers and its influence on their ability to select secondary materials. Enquiries 2 & 3 looked at the issues involved in recovering and using secondary materials (focusing on plastic in London), and the tools currently available to support designers. The primary research suggests that the scenario of product and industrial design consultants is not generally conducive to the consideration and use of secondary materials. Specifications for two tools that could improve the situation are proposed: 1) to build knowledge and awareness of secondary materials, and; 2) to improve materials information for design. However the issues with using secondary materials in design practice are manifold and so the research concludes with a framework identifying five central considerations for supporting the use of secondary materials in design practice. This thesis contributes original knowledge in the field of design research by: • proposing specifications for new tools to support the use of secondary materials in design practice; • presenting a range of approaches to sourcing and using secondary materials in design practice; • furthering understanding of the design scenario and how it may inhibit or enable designers to act in specific ways; • challenging existing approaches to material information provision for designers with a new emphasis on dialogue with specialists and the important role of materials librarians.

The oil shortages and price rises of the 1970s led to a broad spectrum of policies designed to save fuel in transport. One such group of policies concentrated on utilising the longstanding observation that congestion-free driving improves vehicular fuel economy. In particular, improving the average speed of urban traffic was believed to reduce urban fuel use. Strategies to create free-flowing traffic networks through traffic engineering and management techniques became an integral part of most transport energy conservation strategies. At the same time urban systems studies were appearing which suggested that urban land use factors are fundamental in determining transport energy demand. Some cities with denser, more centralised developnent patterns and congested traffic systems appeared to have lower per capita transport energy use than cities with low density, dispersed land use and free-flowing traffic networks. Conflicts thus began to be recognised between these land use studies and the traffic studies but they were never systematically examined. This thesis focuses on explaining and attempting to resolve these apparent conflicts by drawing out the relative importance of freeflowing, fuel efficient traffic and broader land use/transport factors in determining urban system fuel efficiency. It does this by showing how a holistic understanding of transport energy use can be achieved by recognising the different levels of know1edge involved and by integrating research a t all these levels. Adopting this approach, a detailed examination is made of transport energy use in Perth, Western Australia. Spatial and temporal patterns of urban driving and vehicular fuel consumption are derived using a computer-instrumented vehicle within a framework of urban ecology. These patterns are described in detail and are found to be understandable in terms of a simple model of intersection and vehicle-based traffic events. Using this simple model, urban driving and fuel consumption patterns are then systematically linked back to their urban ecological framework. Centrality, as expressed by urban activity intensity emerges as the major underlying factor in both the urban ecological framework and driving patterns. Driving cycles for central to outer areas as well as the whole city are produced and a detailed examination is made of driving cycle development procedures, including the issue of data resolution. Two new methods of driving cycle synthesis are formulated. Driving cycles together with travel survey and land use/transport model data are then used to estimate spatial differences in transport energy use per capita within the urban ecological framework. This case study is used to test two conceptual models of transport energy conservation implied by the traffic and land use studies: a linear assumptions model which suggests reductions in urban system fuel use through freer-flowing traffic and a feedback assumptions model which introduces some possible broader system effects of free-flowing and congested traffic. The results suggest very strong support for the feedback model and a reversal of the linear model. Urban structural factors such as distance from the CBD and density are found to be the major explanatory factors of Perth's transport energy use. The much higher vehicular fuel consumption in Perth's inner areas due to restricted traffic flows are completely offset by energy conserving land use and transport features which result in lower per capita energy use in these areas; the lower vehicular fuel consumption in uncongested outer areas is swamped by land use factors which result in longer travel distances and less use of energy conserving modes, resulting in markedly higher per capita energy use, i .e. a trade-off is found between a fuel efficient traffic system and a fuel efficient urban system. It is concluded that policies which propose fuel savings from "blanket" improvements in urban trraffic flow, such as major road building programmes will be counter-productive, while urban planning policies which encourage higher density, more compact cities will tend to lower energy use. It is suggested that a key area of research is now how to combine selective traffic system improvements with urban land use policies so that both may work in concert to produce a more fuel efficient urban system.

In this dissertation several results in Steinhaus graphs are investigated. First under some further conditions imposed on the induced cycles in steinhaus graphs, the order of induced cycles in Steinhaus graphs is at most [(n+3)/2]. Next the results of maximum clique size in Steinhaus graphs are used to enumerate the Steinhaus graphs having maximal cliques. Finally the concept of jumbled graphs and Posa's Lemma are used to show that almost all Steinhaus graphs are Hamiltonian.

Das Verständnis magnetisch verursachter Aktivität auf Sternen sowie der zugrundeliegenden Dynamoprozesse ist von fundamentaler Bedeutung für das Verständnis von Entstehung und Entwicklung von Sternen sowie des Lebens im Universum. Sichtbare Erscheinungen dieser stellaren Aktivität sind u.a. Sternflecken, welche als Indikatoren des zugrundeliegenden Magnetfeldes dienen. Solche Flecken können auf anderen Sternen als der Sonne nicht direkt beobachtet werden, zumal mit den heutigen technischen Mitteln eine Auflösung der Oberfläche selbst der benachbarten Sterne unmöglich ist. Eine indirekte Rekonstruktionsmethode namens 'Doppler Imaging' erlaubt es jedoch, auf die Temperaturverteilung auf der Sternoberfläche zu schließen. Für diese Arbeit wurden elf Jahre kontinuierlicher spektroskopischer Beobachtungen des aktiven Doppelsterns EI Eridani herangezogen, um insgesamt 34 Dopplerkarten zu erstellen. In der Folge wird versucht, eine Grundlage zu schaffen für die Analyse des zweidimensionalen Informationsgehalts dieser Karten. Drei Oberflächenkartenparameter werden vorgeschlagen: gemittelte Temperatur, getrennt für verschiedenen stellare Breitenbänder; relative Fleckenhäufigkeit; und, zum Zwecke der Auswertung der strukturellen Temperaturverteilung, Längen- und Breiten-Ortsfunktion der Sternfleckenhäufung. Die resultierenden Werte zeigen deutlich, daß kein zeitlicher Zusammenhang mit dem photometrischen Aktivitätszyklus besteht. Die Morphologie der Fleckenverteilung bleibt während des kompletten Beobachtungszeitraums im wesentlichen konstant. Im Gegensatz zur Sonne gibt es also, im beobachteten Zeitraum und innerhalb der bestehenden Genauigkeit, keinen Fleckenzyklus auf dem aktiven Stern EI Eri. Darüberhinaus wurde eine ausführliche Studie der stellaren Parameter von EI Eri und eine vorläufige Abschätzung der differentiellen Rotation auf EI Eri durchgeführt, die eine anti-solare Ausrichtung aufzuweisen scheint, d.h. der Pol rotiert schneller als der Äquator.
Understanding stars, their magnetic activity phenomena and the underlying dynamo action is the foundation for understanding 'life, the universe and everything' - as stellar magnetic fields play a fundamental role for star and planet formation and for the terrestrial atmosphere and climate. Starspots are the fingerprints of magnetic field lines and thereby the most important sign of activity in a star's photosphere. However, they cannot be observed directly, as it is not (yet) possible to spacially resolve the surfaces of even the nearest neighbouring stars. Therefore, an indirect approach called 'Doppler imaging' is applied, which allows to reconstruct the surface spot distribution on rapidly rotating, active stars. In this work, data from 11 years of continuous spectroscopic observations of the active binary star EI Eridani are reduced and analysed. 34 Doppler maps are obtained and the problem of how to parameterise the information content of Doppler maps is discussed. Three approaches for parameter extraction are introduced and applied to all maps: average temperature, separated for several latitude bands; fractional spottedness; and, for the analysis of structural temperature distribution, longitudinal and latitudinal spot-occurrence functions. The resulting values do not show a distinct correlation with the proposed activity cycle as seen from photometric long-term observations, thereby suggesting that the photometric activity cycle is not accompanied by a spot cycle as seen on the Sun. The general morphology of the spot pattern on EI Eri remains persistent for the whole period of 11 years. In addition, a detailed parameter study is performed. Improved orbital parameters suggest that EI Eri might be complemented by a third star in a wide orbit of about 19 years. Preliminary differential rotation measurements are carried out, indicating an anti-solar orientation.

La formation du gypse (CaSO4.2H2O) dans les bassins marginaux méditerranéens au cours du Messinien est contrôlée par la restriction des bassins et par le cycle hydrologique local. La compétition entre l’évaporation et l’apport d’eau douce par les rivières, en association avec des échanges limites avec la Méditerranée, ont permis la mise en place de conditions chimiques favorables à la formation du gypse. La restriction des bassins entraine, de plus, l’augmentation de la consommation de l’oxygène par les microorganismes, l’anoxie, et la mise en place d’un cycle biogéochimique actif du soufre. Au cours de cette étude, j’utilise la composition isotopique stable du gypse en tant que traceur des cycles de l’eau et du soufre dans les bassins marginaux. Le but est de mieux comprendre les conditions hydrologiques et géochimiques qui ont mené à la précipitation du gypse. Ce problème se place dans un débat actuel de la communauté scientifique, particulièrement depuis que de récents travaux proposent qu’une partie du gypse dans les bassins marginaux aurait pu précipiter à partir d’une colonne d’eau à faible salinité (£ 35 PSU) - hypothèse qui peut sembler peu réaliste d’un point de vue géochimique. J’ai mené une analyse isotopique à haute-résolution des couches de gypse qui composent les alternances cycliques gypse-marnes dans les bassins messiniens de Caltanissetta (BC, Sicile) et du Piémont (BP, nord-ouest de l’Italie). Ces alternances gypse-marnes correspondraient à l’expression sédimentaire des cycles astronomiques de précession (~20 ka), pendant lesquels les bassins marginaux ont subi une alternance de conditions climatiques arides et humides. Le cycle hydrologique a été trace grâce aux mesures des compositions isotopiques de l’oxygène et de l’hydrogène de l’eau de cristallisation des gypses ; le cycle biogéochimique du soufre a quant à lui été trace en mesurent les compositions isotopiques du soufre et de l’oxygène des ions sulfates des gypses. J’ai pu observer que : (1) les isotopes de l’eau piégée dans les gypses sont nettement plus légers que ceux théoriquement attendus pour des gypses ayant précipite uniquement à partir d’une eau de mer, et (2) l’eau du BC est caractérisée par un plus fort déficit en deutérium - compare à sa teneur en 18O - que l’eau du BP. Combine a un modèle hydrologique numérique, ces observations impliquent que (1) la précipitation des gypses est réalisée sous l’influence d’un apport d’eau douce fluviatile important, particulièrement au nord du BP, et est donc caractérisée par de très faibles salinités (27-50 psu pour le BC et 10-42 psu dans le BP) ; (2) le contraste de déficit en deutérium entre les deux bassins résultant de la différence de teneur en deutérium des flux évaporais respectifs, est contrôlée par a une différence d’humidité atmosphérique : cela implique que l’atmosphère au-dessus du BC était plus sèche que celle au-dessus du BP. Nous pouvons alors proposer qu’un gradient latitudinal d’humidité relative similaire à l’actuel existait au Messinien, apportant la preuve d’un climat de type méditerranéen dans la région il y a 5.97 Ma. La composition isotopique des ions sulfate suggère globalement une formation de gypse sous influence marine. Cependant, des divergences observées avec la signature marine messinienne mettent en évidence un cycle biogéochimique du soufre actif, contrôlé par la réduction des sulfates et l’oxydation des sulfures. En particulier : (1) les sulfates du BP enrichis en 18O et 34S sont indicateurs d’une sulfato-reduction dans un système géochimique ouvert ou la perte de 32S est liée a la formation de minéraux soufres sédimentaires ; (2) l’enrichissement (BC) ou l’appauvrissement (BP) significatifs en 18O dans les échantillons alors que la teneur en 34S est la même que celle de l’eau de mer indique une reoxydation de sulfure dans un système géochimique ferme d’un bassin marginal soit évaporait (BC) soit dilue (BP)
The formation of gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) in Messinian Mediterranean marginal basins is controlled by basin restriction and the local hydrological cycle. Acting together, evaporation, river input and restricted water exchange with the Mediterranean basin bring about the chemical conditions for gypsum formation. Basin restriction also leads to enhanced microbial oxygen consumption, anoxia, and the triggering of active biogeochemical sulfur cycling. In this work I use the stable isotopic composition of gypsum as a proxy of water and sulphur cycling in the marginal basins. The goal is to better understand the hydrological and geochemical conditions that lead to gypsum precipitation. This is an open question, especially since recent work has proposed that part of the gypsum in marginal basins precipitated from a low-salinity (£ 35 PSU) water column - a hypothesis that seems unrealistic based on simple geochemical considerations. I carried out a high-resolution isotopic study of gypsum layers composing gypsum-marl cycles in the Messinian Caltanissetta (Sicily) and Piedmont (north-western Italy) marginal basins (CB and PB, respectively). These gypsum-marl cycles are thought to be the sedimentary expression of astronomical precession cycles (~20 kyr), during which the marginal basins experienced a succession of arid and wet conditions. The hydrological cycle was tracked by measuring the oxygen and hydrogen isotope composition of the gypsum-bound water molecule; the biogeochemical sulfur cycle was tracked by measuring the sulfur and oxygen isotope composition of the gypsum sulfate ion. I observed that: (1) the isotopes of gypsum-bound water are considerably lighter than those expected for gypsum precipitated via evaporation of seawater, and (2) water in the Caltanissetta basin was characterized by a higher deuterium deficit - compared to its 18O content - than water in the Piedmont basin. In conjunction with a hydrological box-model, these observations imply that (1) gypsum precipitation takes place under the influence of large riverine freshwater fluxes, particularly in the North Piedmont basin, that result in very low salinities (27-50 psu in CB and 10-42 psu in PB) and (2) the contrast in deuterium deficit results from atmospheric humidity-drived difference in the deuterieum content of the evaporative flux, implying that the atmosphere over the CB was drier than that over the PB. Thus, a latitudinal relative humidity gradient similar to the modern one existed in the Messinian, providing evidence for a Mediterranean-like climate in the region 5.97 million years ago. The isotopic composition of the gypsum sulfate ion suggests that it originates from coeval sea water. Deviation from the Messinian marine signature, however, highlights an active biogeochemical sulfur cycle driven by sulfate reduction and sulfide oxidation. In particular, (1) 18O- and 34S-rich sulfate in the Piedmont basin indicates sulfate-reduction in a geochemically open system where 32S is lost to sedimentary sulfide minerals, and (2) significant 18O-enrichment (CB) or 18O-depletion (PB), in samples where the 34S concent is that of seawater, indicates re-oxidation of sulphide in a geochemically closed system of an evaporative (CB) or dilution (PB) marginal basin. A strong relation between the hydrological cycle and the biogeochemical cycle is thus highlighted in marginal Messinian basins

In this dissertation we study the Hamiltonicity and the uniform-Hamiltonicity of subset graphs, subspace graphs, and their associated bipartite graphs. In 1995 paper "The Subset-Subspace Analogy," Kung states the subspace version of a conjecture. The study of this problem led to a more general class of graphs. Inspired by Clark and Ismail's work in the 1996 paper "Binomial and Q-Binomial Coefficient Inequalities Related to the Hamiltonicity of the Kneser Graphs and their Q-Analogues," we defined subset graphs, subspace graphs, and their associated bipartite graphs. The main emphasis of this dissertation is to describe those graphs and study their Hamiltonicity. The results on subset graphs are presented in Chapter 3, on subset bipartite graphs in Chapter 4, and on subspace graphs and subspace bipartite graphs in Chapter 5. We conclude the dissertation by suggesting some generalizations of our results concerning the panciclicity of the graphs.

This thesis contributes further understanding on how to pursue improvements in healthcare and informs the academic growth of improvement science. Derived from manufacturing industries, QI methods are common approaches to structure the process of making improvements in healthcare, however, questions over their scientific legitimacy and application have arisen due to their varied effectiveness. A review of how QI methods are associated with science identifies the prominent theoretical role of QI methods in facilitating change and improvement by supporting the local application of the scientific method. The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle method is identified as playing a central role in this and a theoretical framework is developed to assess the use of the method in published and local team's accounts. This demonstrates that the method is commonly not used with high fidelity; a key novel addition to the research literature. Studies are presented to further understand the reality of PDSA cycle use. These provide a novel identification and empirically grounded description of the social dimensions of applying the PDSA cycle method including negotiating through a single PDSA cycle and navigating the iteration and scale up of change and complexity of learning. A novel association between understanding, intentions and process of applying the PDSA cycle method and the fidelity of the methods use is also presented as well as the views of teams using the method which demonstrate different conceptual views of the PDSA cycle method and the wider social benefits of using the method. Overall, this thesis provides clarity in regards to the technical and social elements of PDSA cycle use. It demonstrates research approaches to open the 'black box' of PDSA cycle use and investigate the use of QI methods more widely. It calls for continued exploration of applying science to improve the quality of healthcare for patients.

La diminution de l'ARNm PR a été mesurée par RT-PCR quantitative, la quantité de protéine exprimée, par Western blot, et le nombre de particules virales infectieuses produites, par sur-infection de cellules Raji. L'efficacité du meilleur siRNA anti-PR a été comparée à celle de drogues anti-ADN polymérase anti-CMV puis évaluée en combinaison avec des siRNA ciblant d'autres protéines du cycle lytique d'EBV. Les siRNA anti-PR testés ici permettent d'obtenir une diminution de 70% de l'ARNm PR, de 35% de la protéine et de 95% du nombre de particules virales infectieuses. Comparés aux anti-ADN polymérase, seul le siRNA anti-PR permet d'obtenir une diminution significative de nombre de particules virales infectieuses et son association au ganciclovir permet encore d'augmenter cette efficacité (p<0,05). De même, l'association avec des siRNA ciblant d'autres protéines du cycle lytique permet d'améliorer l'inhibition de la production de particules virales infectieuses. L'ARNi ciblant EBV-PR semble une piste thérapeutique intéressante, éventuellement en association aux thérapeutiques conventionnelles et/ou avec d'autres siRNA anti-EBV, pour limiter la réplication virale dans les pathologies associées à EBV
The lytic cycle of EBV plays an important role in pathologies associated with this virus. Involved in manufacturing of the viral capsid, protease (PR) is essential for infectious virions production. It represents thereby a prime target for a therapeutic strategy to inhibit viral replication. In this work, the therapeutic efficiency of siRNA targeting EBV-PR was tested on 293 epithelial cells transfected with EBV B95-8 genome. The decrease of PR mRNA was measured by quantitative RT-PCR, the amount of expressed protein by Western blot, and the number of produced infectious viral particles by super-infection of Raji cells. The efficiency of the best siRNA anti-PR was compared to that of anti-DNA polymerase anti-CMV drug and then assessed in combination with siRNA targeting other lytic cycle proteins of EBV. The anti-PR siRNA tested here allow getting a 70% decrease of PR mRNA, 35% of protein and 95% of infectious viral particles number. Compared to anti-DNA polymerase, only the siRNA anti-PR enables a significant reduction of infectious viral particles number and its association with ganciclovir increases even more its effectiveness (p <0. 05). Similarly, the association with siRNA targeting other lytic cycle proteins allows raising the inhibition of infectious viral particles production. RNAi targeting EBV-PR seems an interesting therapeutic way, possibly in combination with conventional therapeutics and / or with other siRNA anti-EBV, to limit viral replication in EBV associated diseases
