In Ukraine, in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the State Strategy for the Implementation of the State Policy for the Provision of the Population with Medicines for the Period until 2025 has been approved, which includes improving the availability of drugs to improve the quality of life. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are gaining widespread implementation and funding from the budget in the world. Goal – the aim of the work was to analyze the state and dynamics of ART cycles in Ukraine for 1999–2019 and to estimate the cost of ART in Ukraine and to develop a methodology for estimating the availability of ART and comparison with European countries. Materials – international and domestic publications on the assessment of the availability of drugs, the cost of ART. Research methods: system analysis, data synthesis and generalization of information, webometric analysis, statistical analysis of data on the number of ART cycles for 1999-2018, analysis of ART costs. It is determined that the indicator of the number of ART cycles per 1 million population increased 29.9 times for 1999–2018, which is due to the increase in the number of ART centers conducted ART cycles in relation to the decrease in the population of Ukraine. It was found that 85% of ART centers are concentrated in only 4 cities (Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa, Kharkiv), which reduces the accessibility of the population to ART cycles, especially in the conditions of quarantine and pandemic COVID-19. It was found that in 1999–2018 the number of ART centers increased 7.7 times, but only 10.8% of ART centers have state funding, which indicates the low availability of ART for budget funds. It was found that the structure of ART cycles changed significantly. The average costs for the most common ART cycles IVF and ICSI in Ukraine as of the end of 2019 have been determined. It has been shown that only 26% of ART centers provide information on the cost of ART cycles, and web pages need to be filled with information on the cost of ART cycles to ensure that patients are properly informed. It is shown that in Ukraine as of 2020 the costs of ART cycles are 24 425–30 516 UAH (917,25–1 010,57 Euro) depending on the type of cycle from the perspective of the payer. It is estimated that the availability of ART is 1.5–9.98 depending on the type of ART cycle, the cost of ART cycles is 6–10 times higher than the average family income, when in European countries the availability of ART is much lower 1,5–4.2, which showed higher availability of ART in European countries from payer prospect.

This research investigates the most modern approaches to water treatment and recovery in power plants because of the scarcity of water sources and the significance of those sources in enhancing the performance of power-generating cycles. Gas turbines, which use mixes of air and water as the working fluid, provide superior efficiency, high specific power outputs, and reduced investment costs compared to combined cycles. Several different cycles for humidified gas turbines, including cycles of direct water injection, cycles of steam injection, and evaporative cycles that include humidity control towers, have been proposed. Despite this, only a few of these cycles have been put into practice, and even fewer are available for purchase on the market. This work aims to analyze the research and development literature on humidification-based gas turbines and highlight the cycles that have the most significant promise for the long run. In addition, work on development that still has to be carried out in order to deploy humidification-based gas turbine cycles is advised. This article may also be used as an overview of the research and development work that has taken place on humidification-based gas turbines over the course of the last thirty years.

The prevalence of infertility has risen 2.9 times in recent years in Ukraine. The use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) is needed. The State program for infertility treatment by budget funds was approved in Ukraine since 2004. However, funding for this program is enough only for 500–600 cycles per year, but ART centers conducted more than 27,000 cycles in 2018. This means that many women have to pay out-of-pockets. Our research has shown that between 2000 and 2018, the number of ART clinics and the number of cycles, pregnancies, and children born increased significantly in Ukraine. The rate of ART cycles per 1 million population in Ukraine has increased from 226.9 to 655.3, but it is lower than the WHO recommended rate 800–1000 cycles per 1 million population. Changes in the structure of ART cycles for 2000–2018, the increase of ICSI, and egg donation cycles are shown. It requires an adequate supply by hormonal drugs for ovarian stimulation in ART centers. Since 2004 Ministry of Health of Ukraine annually approved the list of medicines for State program of ART. Only 8 drugs were purchased by the state funds, which amounted for USD 227 438 in 2017, 2018. A retrospective analysis of drug prescriptions in short and long stimulation protocols was performed. The frequency of drug prescriptions according to the ATC-classification based on medical records was determined, all prescriptions were accordance with the requirements of ART treatment standards in Ukraine. The costs of the three hormonal stimulation schemes, which were the most prescribing in ART center, were calculated. It was found that costs for hormonal schemes increased by 22–54% during 2015–2020, it significantly reduces the availability and affordability of ART for the population in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting disparities have been seen in assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes for Hispanic and Asian women compared to white, non-Hispanic (WNH) women. We, therefore, sought to clarify these disparities and calculated cumulative live birth rates (CLBR) for these racial or ethnic groups using the SARTCORS database. METHODS: We performed an analysis of the 2014–2016 SARTCORS database for member clinics doing at least 50 cycles of ART each year. RESULTS: In comparison to cycles in WNH women, cycles in Hispanic and Asian patients were in older (p < 0.001), more nulliparous women, that were less likely to have a history of endometriosis compared WNH women regardless of prior ART status. ART cycles in Hispanic and Asian women, exhibited lower rates of live birth (LB) per cycle start (p < 0.001) compared to cycles in WNH women. Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that cycles from Hispanic and Asian women were less likely to have a LB and CLBR than white women (OR 0.86; p = 0.004, OR 0.69; p < 0.001, respectively) independent of age, parity, BMI, etiology of infertility, use of ICSI or number of embryos transferred. CONCLUSIONS: Race or ethnicity continues to be an independent prognostic factor for LB and CLBR for ART. Additional analysis of trends among Hispanic and Asian women is warranted to enable addressing disparities in outcomes in ART treatment.

The report includes data on ART cycles registered by the Kazakhstan Association for Reproductive Medicine for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2017. A total of 10,523 ART treatment cycles and 2,037 newborns were registered in 2017. The accessibility of ART treatment was 583 cycles per million population. The Instruction of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan given in the Message of September 1, 2020 is an important step to improve the reproductive potential of the country.

Into the report data of ART cycles registered by the Kazakhstan Association are included reproductive medicine for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2018. In general complexity, 12,185 cycles of ART treatment were registered in 2018, and 3244 newborns were born as a result of their use. The frequency of ART use was 628 cycles per million population. The instruction of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the message of September 1, 2020 is an important step towards improving the reproductive potential of the country.

Abstract STUDY QUESTION What is the current status of assisted reproductive technology (ART) service availability, efficacy and safety in mainland China? SUMMARY ANSWER In this first national report on ART status in mainland China, data on treatment numbers, outcomes and complications in 2016 are provided and analyzed, respectively. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY National ART Service Provision Surveys are conducted in mainland China regularly. Data were analyzed, and this manuscript was written by team members from the National Center for Women and Children’s Health, China CDC and the Department of Women and Children Health, National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE AND DURATION A cross-sectional nationwide survey was completed in 2018, in which data regarding ART treatments, performed from 1st January to 31st December2016 in 445 ART clinics located in 31 provinces of mainland China, were collected. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING AND METHODS There were in total 451 licensed ART clinics (including artificial insemination clinics) in mainland China in 2016, of which 445 submitted service data. A total of 906 840 cycles were provided by 323 in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics, involving 375 770 conventional IVF cycles, 154 948 intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles, 367 146 frozen embryo transfer (FET) thawing cycles and 8976 preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) treatment cycles. A total of 161 376 artificial (i.e. intrauterine) insemination (AI) cycles were reported by 443 clinics, with 126 872 cycles using the husband’s semen (AIH) and 34 504 using donor semen (AID). MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE In total, 98.7% of the licensed clinics, contributing to 100% of the ART services (including AID and AIH cycles), were included in this report. (Six clinics provided institutional information only and were excluded.) There were 906 840 in vitro fertilization cycles performed in mainland China with a population of over 1.3 billion inhabitants, with cycles per million inhabitants (C/M) increasing from 360 in 2013 to 657 in 2016, nationwide (range among provinces: 45–3676). After treatment with conventional IVF, the clinical pregnancy rate (PR) per oocyte retrieval cycle was 23.2%, the delivery rate (DR) per oocyte retrieval cycle was 18.7% and the proportion of twin delivery among the total deliveries was 27.9%. For ICSI cycles, the PR, DR and TDR were 20.5%, 16.7% and 27.2%, respectively. For FET per thawing cycles, the PR, DR and TDR were 48.2%, 37.6% and 24.2%. For PGD per diagnosis cycles, the PR, DR and TDR were 38.1%, 29.7% and 4.2%. For AIH cycles, the PR and DR were 13.3% and 10.5%; for AID cycles, the PR and DR were 24.3% and 21.1%, respectively. The total number of live infants born in mainland China in 2016, was 18.46 million, and the number of infants born through ART conducted in 2016 was 311 309, which accounted for 1.69% of the total. The reported rate of birth defects was about 87/10 000. The incidence of moderate to severe ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS) was 11.5 per 1000 oocyte retrieval cycles, and other complications were much more rare. LIMITATIONS AND REASONS FOR CAUTION This report is based on the summary data of ART services provided. The success rates were not calculated by age stratification. A low rate of birth defects was reported, which might be confounded by variations in birth follow-up methods, statistical timing and record taking. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS ART service availability has improved significantly in recent years in mainland China. Because China is a vast country, significant imbalances in ART service provision do exist; however, the main efficacy and safety indicators were close to those of western countries. The majority of repertoire catalogs for singers, printed and digital, often list works by voice type, language, and/or genre. The 21st century has seen an emergence of online classical music catalogs where the user can seek repertoire by searching composers from underrepresented communities (i.e., women, Black, LGBTQ, Latinx). What does not currently exist is a resource that catalogs songs for solo voice dealing specifically with gay subject matter. This dissertation surveys seventeen 21st century gay-themed art songs by four living American composers: David Del Tredici, Ben Moore, Clint Borzoni, and Gary Schocker. Each chapter introduces a different composer and a select representation of their gay-themed art songs. Each entry includes text analysis based on the composer's and author's intentions and a brief analysis to determine pedagogical and musical difficulty. It is my intent that this document will facilitate a much-needed resource and encourage further study, promotion, and performance of voice works with gay themes. Moreover, I hope that it will serve as a tool for the applied voice teacher to assist in the vocal and artistic development of their students through broader repertoire choices.

In June 2013 the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI) hosted its inaugural Contemporary Performance Studies program. The ten-day event offered student and emerging artist singers and pianists the opportunity to study and perform contemporary works both of their own selection and assigned by the program directors. Among the pieces assigned were works by Vancouver composers, both established professionals and rising talents, that showcased astonishing variety, depth, and excellence in their styles and artistry. The composers at VISI represented the latest generation in a long tradition of art song composition in Canada, but outside of the country's borders, Canada's composers and works are largely unknown. Lack of presence in the international musical canon has unfortunately been a historical issue for Canada. However, as compositional trends have shifted toward neo-tonality, art song in Canada has experienced significant growth in production and performance, particularly in Vancouver. Aided by organizations such as VISI, Canadian art song has been primed to take a prominent position on the international stage.

Sibyl cycles in Northern and Central Italy, in the Early Renaissance. Previous published scholarship listed twenty-two sites. I now know of forty. Twenty-three of these may be considered Early Renaissance works of art and are the subject of this study. This study is not primarily engaged with history of Art but with the history of Ideas. That is, it is not a study of the painters. their methods and status but rather with the study of the development of the genre. its textual sources, the content of the inscribed oracles. the development of the pictorial conventions and symbolism. the transmission of these and the cultural significance of the genre. The dissertation is concerned with artistic styles and techniques only in so far as they illuminate the pictorial origin of the works and their iconographic significance in terms of the ideas conveyed. It describes and defines regional sub-genres. each with clear rules and conventions. These have not previously been identified and no comprehensive national conspectus exists. Structure of the Dissertation The dissertation is in three parts. The first part addresses the nature and origin of Sibyls (who and what they were) and their significance in cultural history until the Renaissance. Part Two is concerned with the origins and transmission of text and iconographic conventions in the Renaissance Sibyl cyeles. Pari three is a catalogue and survey of each Sibyl cycle site in Central and Northern Italy, along with a comprehensive photographic record. Great destruction of some cycles has taken place since the 1960s and the compilation of a complete photographic record is urgent and a significant aim of the present work. There are few published coloured photographs of the full cycles. none complete except for Siena. This dissertation is wide in scope and is in large part a catalogue and survey of all known Italian Sibyl cycles. Because of the limitations of a Doctoral dissertation. at times the transition from one site to another may appear abrupt and disjunct. Nonetheless, the structure is logical and careful. Sites are arranged chronologically, according to genre. The reader is directed to the detailed table of contents, if a review of structure and order be required. Research Method The method of research was to form a comprehensive list of Sibyl sites in Italy by consulting published English and Continental books. journals and locally produced historical papers as well as word of mouth advice in Italy. I visited all the sites and made a photographic record. Origin and transmission of text was established by consulting contemporary manuscripts that either specify the oracle text or describe the original Orsini. and other, frescos. These manuscripts are widely scattered in Europe and difficult of access so, where possible, a significant example of each kind of manuscript is reproduced in photographs or photocopy, transcribed and translated in the Appendices to the dissertation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On the way to a contemporary eco-aesthetic. My thesis consists of three chapters; the first chapter contains a basic background study and philosophic research of concepts which are relevant to my work; the second chapter is a discussion of ecofeminism as political and spiritual phenomena (my work resorts in the genre of ecofeminism); and the third chapter is an analytic consideration and discussion where my works are presented as a visual explanation of my own interpretation of the dialogue between art and science with underlying geographical and ecological concepts. Some of these concepts purport the ritual of cycles and the aesthetic experience thereof. They deal with the earth as maternal patron where the layers of society (evidence of existence) becomes evident in the layering of the earth. This evidence of existence can be found in the waste generated from the cyclic existence of living beings and organisms. In addition, the traditional scrub or healing activities which are ascribed to women, are used as an argument to effectuate a consciousness of symbioses.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: My tesis bestaan uit drie hoofstukke; die eerste hoofstuk behels 'n basiese agtergrondstudie en filosofiese ondersoek na konsepte wat na my mening betrekking het op my werk; die tweede hoofstuk is 'n bespreking oor ekofeminisme as politieke en spirituele verskynsel (my werk ressorteer onder ekofeminisme as genre); en die derde hoofstuk 'n analitiese beskouing en bespreking waar my werk aangebied word as visuele verduideliking van my persoonlike interpretasie van die dialoog tussen kuns en wetenskap met onderliggende geografiese en ekologiese konsepte. Van hierdie konsepte gaan oor die ritueel van siklusse en die estetiese belewenis daarvan. Dit handeloor die aarde as die moederskoot waar die lae van samelewings (bewyse van bestaan) gelees kan word in die gelaagdheid van die aarde. Hierdie bewyse van bestaan kan gevind word in die afval wat gegenereer word uit die sikliese bestaanswyse van lewende wesens en organismes. Hiermee saam word die tradisionele skrop- of helende aktiwiteite wat aan vroue toegeken word, as argument gebruik om 'n bewussyn van simbiose te bewerkstellig.

This paper discusses the fresco decoration of Santa Maria ad Cryptas. The frescoes are described and analyzed, and then compared to similar programs in order to determine which features are based on earlier sources, and which are unusual or unique to this particular church. The traditional features are found to reflect a long-established pattern of church decoration reflected in such monuments as Old Saint Peter’s, Sant’Angelo in Formis, the Cathedral of Monreale, and the Cappella Palatina. The unusual features (including the placement of the Passion cycle in the presbytery, and the location of the Crucifixion over the altar) are explained as modifications that emphasize themes of local importance, or of special significance to the patron. The Fossa frescoes utilize programmatic elements, such as the Old and New Testament narrative cycles, to explain sacred history as it related to a medieval man of the patron’s class and profession.

Malgré des préjugés qui considèrent la peinture de cette période comme simplement décorative, les artistes, conscients de leur liberté de création, due à l’élargissement du public, élaborent soigneusement les programmes iconographique et stylistique qui témoignent de leurs talents propres. Les décors peints reflètent la conjoncture des intentions des commanditaires, des ambitions des peintres et des réactions du public. La peinture d’histoire, dont le prestige n’est jamais mis en doute, est susceptible d’une interprétation libre sous l’influence d’autres genres. La diversification du public du Salon et la critique d’art amènent une opposition entre amateurs et critiques. La direction royale des Bâtiments du roi incite les artistes à l’émulation. Sa réforme, qui vise au progrès des Arts, ne réside pas dans le simple retour à l’antique ou au XVIIe siècle, mais dans l’invention d’une peinture des Lumières par l’introduction d’une dimension sociale, marquée par l’idéal des encyclopédistes. Les difficultés que rencontrent les décors peints des châteaux royaux et des résidences des maîtresses en titre, révèlent la complexité de la réception des œuvres, particulière à l’époque du développement des institutions modernes et de la diversification des espaces dans l’architecture profane. Cycles and series of secular subjects, painted between 1730 and 1774, reveal an evolution of the ideal of painting and the reality of its practice, led by a popularization of the mode of reception of Fine Arts. Despite some prejudices that consider the painting of this period as simply decorative, artists, who are conscious of their liberty of creation, granted by an extension of the public, produce carefully iconographic and stylistic programs which show their peculiar talents. Painted ensembles, made for specific interiors, reflect complicated circumstances of patron’s intentions, painter’s ambition and reactions of the public. History painting, of which prestige is never doubted, is open to free interpretation under the influence of others genres. Diversification of the public of the Salon and development of art criticism bring an opposition between amateurs and critics. The Bâtiments du roi tries to encourage a competitive spirit by artists. Its reform, which aims at progress of Fine Arts, is not a simple return to the Antiquity or the seventeenth-century, but is the invention of the painting of Enlightenment by introducing social meanings, which convey the ideal of the encyclopedists. Difficulties, encountered by large ensembles of interior paintings of royal castles and of official mistresses’ residences, reveal a complexity of artistic creation, proper to this period of development of modern institutions and diversification of spaces in secular architecture. AbstractImplementation of the CE principles at the grass-root level requires closing the loop of products’ life cycles, one that warrants extensive rework at every stage of the life cycle from design to end-of-life. Therefore, the circularity assessment of products/services for their entire life cycle becomes critical. In this work, we present the circularity assessment of products/services (considered as the nano level in the economic hierarchy) unlike the prior art and provide a comprehensive metric required for this assessment. The chapter begins with a brief explanation of the need for such an evaluation. Then, continues with a discussion on the state-of-the-art assessment of a product along with a list of various indicators that have been implemented in the circularity measurements at the nano level. This theoretical background is complemented with real-world case studies of Levi’s jeans and surgical face masks for a better understanding of the concept. Then, the concept of materials utilization efficiency, a key factor in conceiving and designing circular products/services, is presented as a logical conclusion to the chapter.

AbstractThis paper aims to describe the modern experience and process of reconstructing a five-hundred-year-old martial art (the Renaissance arte delle armi) from the study of extant sources and materials, mainly treatises and weapons of the time, for the understanding and practice of motions and embodied concepts. The approaches, methods, and praxis will be analyzed, exploring the delicate operation of reconstructing a martial art system from written words. Among the masters of the past, this experience focuses on the teaching of Master Achille Marozzo from Bologna, who published his treatise on fighting, Opera Nova, in 1536. Today, the Opera Nova School brings back to life this art of the past through its ongoing research and teaching, thanks to a complex and syncretic approach that condenses a wide range of information and experiences into contemporary practice. In this paper, I discuss the example of the two-handed sword discipline. The fixed sequences of codified moves, the assalti or forms, are the precious teachings provided by the historical source, which form the basis for modern interpretation. Through cycles of theoretical comprehension and practical application, it is possible to grasp the complexity of a martial art system, giving new life to an ageless art.

Coke drums are vessels critical to the operation and profitability of today’s oil refinery and tar sands facilities. These vessels operate in batch cycles at relatively high temperatures, ∼800F+, and about once a day they are filled with vapor and hot oil and finally quenched with water. They have historically been designed according as ASME Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels with little or no account for the cyclic operation or fatigue service in which they operate. In the past ten years, the frequency and severity of these cycles dramatically increased while cycle times steadily decreased from 24 to 12 hour cycles and, more recently, to as low as 10 hour cycles. As a result, coke drums with few or no previous problems began to crack through wall in the shell and/or skirt region. In addition, many new coke drums are cracking through wall in as few as four to five years because they were not designed for the more severe fatigue service in which they currently operate. These observations have been learned by extensive monitoring and evaluation: • drums experienced lower switch temperatures (inadequate pre-warm for the skirt), • drums were heated and cooled much faster than anticipated, • contraction of the drum walls compacted the coke, • feed stocks were now different and produced harder coke, • reducing cycle times by as little as two hours caused average fatigue damage per cycle to increase by more than 30%. All of these occurrences can increase cyclic stress on drums and significantly accelerate cracking.

The article is devoted to images that arise in models, experiments and computational experiments developed and conducted by the author. A number of different innovative gas turbine cycles are currently being developed for future high performance power generation applications. Of particular interest are new cycles such as the Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycle and the Chemically Recuperated Gas Turbine (CRGT) cycle. The HAT cycle has reached the stage of commercial demonstration, whereas the CRGT cycle is still in the research stage. Performance predictions for CRGT cycles show cycle performance levels higher than those of the basic Steam Injected (STIG) cycle, but lower than those of state-of-the-art combined cycles. Thus, CRGT cycles are most likely to be of interest for intermediate load operation or cogeneration. For such applications, part load performance is a key performance criterion. Part load operation is generally detrimental to power plant performance, and it is thus important to assess the part load performance of such a plant under various operating conditions. The emphasis of this paper is on the comparison of part load performance of various advanced cycles (STIG, CRGT, Combined Cycle). The results show that the part load performance levels of a CRGT cycle deteriorate less fast than those of a combined cycle, whereas part load behavior is similar to that of a STIG cycle. However, this study also indicates that CRGT part load performance is less attractive than published performance curves of Westinghouse’s innovative CHAT cycle, thus confirming that the key advantage of the CRGT cycle is the projected ultra-low emissions characteristics of the cycle.

Increasing the efficiency of coal-fired power plants is vital to reducing electricity costs and emissions. Power cycles employing supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) as the working fluid have the potential to increase power cycle efficiency by 3–5% points over state-of-the-art oxy-combustion steam-Rankine cycles operating under comparable conditions. To date, the majority of studies have focused on the integration and optimization of sCO2 power cycles in waste heat, solar, or nuclear applications. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the potential of sCO2 power cycles, and quantify the power cycle efficiency gains that can be achieved versus the state-of-the-art steam-Rankine cycles employed in oxy-fired coal power plants. Turbine inlet conditions were varied among the sCO2 test cases and compared with existing Department of Energy (DOE)/National Energy Technology6 Laboratory (NETL) steam base cases. Two separate sCO2 test cases were considered and the associated flow sheets developed. The turbine inlet conditions for this study were chosen to match conditions in a coal-fired ultra-supercritical steam plant (Tinlet = 593°C, Pinlet = 24.1 MPa) and an advanced ultra-supercritical steam plant (Tinlet = 730°C, Pinlet = 27.6 MPa). A plant size of 550 MWe, was selected to match available information on existing DOE/NETL bases cases. The effects of cycle architecture, combustion-air preheater temperature, and cooling source type were considered subject to comparable heat source and reference conditions taken from the steam Rankine reference cases. Combinations and variants of sCO2 power cycles — including cascade and recompression and variants with multiple reheat and compression steps — were considered with varying heat-rejection subsystems — air-cooled, direct cooling tower, and indirect-loop cooling tower. Where appropriate, combustion air preheater inlet temperature was also varied. Through use of a multivariate nonlinear optimization design process that considers both performance and economic impacts, curves of minimum cost versus efficiency were generated for each sCO2 test case and combination of architecture and operational choices. These curves indicate both peak theoretical efficiency and suggest practical limits based on incremental cost versus performance. For a given test case, results for individual architectural and operational options give insight to cost and performance improvements from step-changes in system complexity and design, allowing down selection of candidate architectures. Optimized designs for each test case were then selected based on practical efficiency limits within the remaining candidate architectures and compared to the relevant baseline steam plant. sCO2 cycle flowsheets are presented for each optimized design.

Humidified Gas Turbine (HGT) cycles such as the Evaporative Gas Turbine (EGT) and the Steam-Injected Gas Turbine (STIG) using humid air as the working medium do not require a complete steam turbine bottoming cycle; thus, their initial capital costs are not as high as those for the conventional combined cycles. The performance of a HGT cycle could be comparable to a state-of-the-art combined cycle for small loads. The availability of the steam from a HGT cycle presents opportunities for designing steam-cooled blades. Since the specific heat capacity for steam is higher than that for air, steam could potentially be a better coolant for turbine blades than air, resulting in higher cycle efficiency. In this study, three known HGT cycles are evaluated in terms of their electrical efficiencies and power outputs: the STIG, the Part-flow Evaporative Gas Turbine (PEvGT), and the combined STIG cycles. All the three HGT cycles are analyzed in two cooling options: steam and air coolings. The HGT cycles will be evaluated using consistent thermodynamic properties and assumptions. Like a simple gas turbine cycle, the HGT cycles are based on the well-known Brayton cycle whose performance is dictated by the cycle pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. Therefore, the electrical efficiencies and power outputs of the HGT cycles will be calculated as a function of the cycle pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. The steam-cooled cycles provide advantages over the air-cooled cycles in the electrical efficiency, power output, and combustion stability. The steam cooling improves the electrical efficiency by approximately 1.4 percentage points for the STIG cycle, by approximately 1.7 percentage points for the PEvGT cycle, and by approximately 1 percentage point for the combined STIG cycle. The maximum electrical efficiency of the steam-cooled PEvGT cycle is 54.6%, only 0.2 percentage points higher than that for the steam-cooled combined STIG cycle. The steam cooling generally results in more power output than the air cooling does for all the HGT cycles at most operating conditions. In addition, the steam cooling reduces the water content of the humid air entering the combustor, leading to significantly improved combustion stability.

This paper discusses the design, startup and operation of four rebuilt and redesigned 250 TPD MSW combustion trains located at the McKay Bay Waste to Energy Facility in Tampa Florida. Each independent MSW train consists of a new steam generator, reciprocating grate stoker, ash handling and air pollution control system. The new steam generators are built on the footprint of the original units, which were removed in their entirety leaving only the lower foundation steel. The refurbishment was accomplished in two stages to permit the facility to remain in operation. The new steam generators are designed to minimize fouling, maximize the amount of operating time between cleaning cycles and maintain steam temperature. Evaluation of startup and operating data demonstrates that the units exceed their planned operating time between cleaning cycles and will provide consistent reliable performance over the service life of the facility.

Combined cycles have gained widespread acceptance as the most efficient utilization of the gas turbine for power generation, particularly for large plants. A variety of alternatives to the combined cycle that recover exhaust gas heat for re-use within the gas turbine engine have been proposed and some have been commercially successful in small to medium plants. Most notable has been the steam injected, high-pressure aero-derivatives in sizes up to about 50 MW. Many permutations and combinations of water injection, steam injection, and recuperation, with or without intercooling, have been shown to offer the potential for efficiency improvements in certain ranges of gas turbine cycle design parameters. A detailed, general model that represents the gas turbine with turbine cooling has been developed. The model is intended for use in cycle analysis applications. Suitable choice of a few technology description parameters enables the model to accurately represent the performance of actual gas turbine engines of different technology classes. The model is applied to compute the performance of combined cycles as well as that of three alternatives. These include the simple cycle, the steam injected cycle and the dual-recuperated intercooled aftercooled steam injected cycle (DRIASI cycle). The comparisons are based on state-of-the-art gas turbine technology and cycle parameters in four classes: large industrial (123–158 MW), medium industrial (38–60 MW), aeroderivatives (21–41 MW) and small industrial (4–6 MW). The combined cycle’s main design parameters for each size range are in the present work selected for computational purposes to conform with practical constraints. For the small systems, the proposed development of the gas turbine cycle, the DRIASI cycle, are found to provide efficiencies comparable or superior to combined cycles, and superior to steam injected cycles. For the medium systems, combined cycles provide the highest efficiencies but can be challenged by the DRIASI cycle. For the largest systems, the combined cycle was found to be superior to all of the alternative gas turbine based cycles considered in this study.

Some key criteria in the optimal currency area literature are that countries should join a currency union if they have closer international trade links and more symmetric business cycles. However, both criteria are endogenous. Frankel and Rose (1998) find that trade intensity increases cycle correlation among industrial countries. We study whether the same result holds true for the case of developing countries, as their different patterns of international trade and specialization may lead to cyclical asymmetries among them and between industrial and developing countries. We gather annual information for 147 countries for 1960-99 (33,676 country pairs) and find: (i) countries with higher bilateral trade exhibit higher business cycle synchronization, with an increase of one standard deviation in bilateral trade intensity raising the output correlation from 0.05 to 0.09 for all country pairs; (ii) countries with more asymmetric structures of production exhibit a smaller business cycle correlation; (iii) the impact of trade integration on business cycles is higher for industrial countries than both developing and industrial-developing country pairs; (iv) a one standard deviation increase in bilateral trade intensity leads to surges in output correlation from 0.25 to 0.39 among industrial countries, from 0.08 to 0.10 for our sample of industrial-developing country pairs, and from 0.03 to 0.06 among developing countries; (v) the impact of trade intensity on cycle correlation is smaller the greater the production structure asymmetries between the countries.

The focus of this research project is to investigate the role of endoreduplication in maize endosperm development and the extent to which this process contributes to high levels of starch and storage protein synthesis. Although endoreduplication has been widely observed in many cells and tissues, especially those with high levels of metabolic activity, the molecular mechanisms through which the cell cycle is altered to produce consecutive cycles of S-phase without an intervening M-phase are unknown. Our previous research has shown that changes in the expression of several cell cycle regulatory genes coincide with the onset of endoreduplication. During this process, there is a sharp reduction in the activity of the mitotic cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) and activation of the S-phase CDK. It appears the M-phase CDK is stable, but its activity is blocked by a proteinaceous inhibitor. Coincidentally, the S-phase checkpoint protein, retinoblastoma (ZmRb), becomes phosphorylated, presumably releasing an E2F-type transcriptional regulator which promotes the expression of genes responsible for DNA synthesis. To investigate the role of these cell cycle proteins in endoreduplication, we have created transgenic maize plants that express various genes in an endosperm-specific manner using a storage protein (g-zein) promoter. During the first year of the grant, we constructed point mutations of the maize M-phase kinase, p34cdc2. One alteration replaced aspartic acid at position 146 with asparagine (p3630-CdcD146N), while another changed threonine 161 to alanine (p3630-CdcT161A). These mutations abolish the activity of the CDK. We hypothesized that expression of the mutant forms of p34cdc2 in endoreduplicating endosperm, compared to a control p34cdc2, would lead to extra cycles of DNA synthesis. We also fused the gene encoding the regulatory subunit of the M- phase kinase, cyclin B, under the g-zein promoter. Normally, cyclin B is expected to be destroyed prior to the onset of endoreduplication. By producing high levels of this protein in developing endosperm, we hypothesized that the M-phase would be extended, potentially reducing the number of cycles of endoreduplication. Finally, we genetically engineered the wheat dwarf virus RepA protein for endosperm-specific expression. RepA binds to the maize retinoblastoma protein and presumably releases E2F-like transcription factors that activate DNA synthesis. We anticipated that inactivation of ZmRb by RepA would lead to additional cycles of DNA synthesis.

A testing program was conducted to evaluate the effects of internal pressure during the installation of composite and steel sleeves repair systems on pipelines with plain dents. The testing program included cyclic pressure testing a group of 12.75-inch OD x 0.188-inch WT, Grade X42 pipe samples with plain dents having residual dent depths on the order of 3% to 4% of the pipe's outside diameter. The dent samples were repaired using four (4) different composite repair systems, type-A steel sleeves, and steel thermal compression sleeves. The composite repair systems included a carbon fiber wet-layup, an E-glass wet-layup, a system with precured plies, and a hybrid composite-steel repair system. To determine the effect internal pressure has on repair installation for dents, all repairs were installed with an internal pressure of 64% SMYS (793 psig) in the pipe sample. The dent samples were then pressure cycled between 8 - 80% SMSY ( and Delta;P = 900 psig) until failure or reaching the runout condition of 250,000 cycles. Only three (3) out of the fourteen (14) repaired dents reached the 250,000 pressure cycle runout condition and these samples were all repaired using steel sleeves. The maximum number of cycles reached by any composite repair was approximately 200,000 cycles while the least number of cycles reached was approximately 24,000 cycles. In addition to the dent repairs, two (2) 12.75-inch OD x 0.375-inch WT, Grade X42 pipe samples with a 6-inch x 8-inch corrosion defect were repaired with an E-glass wet-layup. These two (2) samples were a continuation of a previous study that investigated the effects of a 50% SMYS (1,235 psig) installation pressure on the fatigue performance of corrosion repairs. Both samples reached the runout condition of 250,000 cycles. The body of work is seminal in that it is the first time that industry was evaluated a wide range of repair technologies to determine the effects of pressure during installation in reinforcing plain dents. It has been speculated for some time that internal pressure present during installation of composite repair technologies has an impact on fatigue performance. Although corrosion features do not appear to be a concern, the reinforcement of dents with internal pressure requires careful consideration. Because gas transmission pipelines do not experience aggressive pressure cycling, the effects of pressure present during installation are not a major concern. However, liquid transmission pipeline operators should be cognizant of the pressure effects and respond accordingly. Namely, pressure should be reduced during installation as much as possible.

This report describes several advances in the cyclic failure assessment of silt soils with immediate and practical benefit to the geotechnical earthquake engineering profession. First, a database of cyclic loading test data is assembled, evaluated, and used to assess trends in the curvature of the CRR-N (cyclic resistance ratio - the number of equivalent cycles) relationship. This effort culminated in a plasticity index-dependent function which can be used to estimate the exponent b in the power law describing cyclic resistance, and may be used to estimate the cyclic resistance of silt soils as well as the number of equivalent loading cycles anticipated for subduction zone earthquakes. Statistical models for the cyclic resistance ratio and cyclic strength ratio are presented in this report. The SHANSEP (Stress History and Normalized Soil Engineering Properties)-inspired functional form of these models have been trained and tested against independent datasets and finalized using a combined dataset to provide reasonable estimates of resistance based on the available data. These models can be used to provide provisional estimates of the CRR-N and cyclic strength ratio power laws for cyclic shear strain failure criteria ranging from 1 to 10%, within certain stated limitations. The ground motion records within the NGA Subduction Project which have been released to the public to-date are implemented to examine the role of subduction zone earthquake characteristics on the number of equivalent loading cycles for a wide range of soils with exponents b ranging from 0.05 (moderate plasticity silt and clay) to 0.35 (dense sand). This analysis shows that the number of loading cycles for a given magnitude subduction zone earthquake is larger than those previously computed, whereas the corresponding magnitude scaling factors for use with the Simplified Method span a smaller range as a result of the ground motion characteristics. Owing to the large variability in the computed equivalent number of loading cycles, consideration of the uncertainty is emphasized in forward analyses. The work described herein may be used to estimate cyclic resistance of intact non-plastic and plastic silt soils and corresponding factor of safety against cyclic failure for a range in cyclic shear strain failure criteria, to plan cyclic laboratory testing programs, and to calibrate models for use in site response and nonlinear deformation analyses in the absence of site-specific cyclic test data. As with any empirical approach, the models presented herein should be revised when additional, high-quality cyclic testing data become available.

A large empirical literature has shown that countries that trade more with each other have more correlated business cycles. We show that previous estimates of this relationship are biased upward because they ignore common trade exposure to other countries. When we account for common trade exposure to foreign business cycles, we find that (1) the effect of bilateral trade on business cycle comovement falls by roughly 25 percent and (2) common exposure is a significant driver of business cycle comovement. A standard international real business cycle model is qualitatively consistent with these facts but fails to reproduce their magnitudes. Past studies have used models that allow for productivity shock transmission through trade to strengthen the relationship between trade and comovement. We find that productivity shock transmission increases business cycle comovement largely because of a country-pair's common trade exposure to other countries rather than because of bilateral trade. When we allow for stronger transmission between small open economies than other country-pairs, comovement increases both from bilateral trade and common exposure, similar to the data.
