As recent studies indicate a correlation between patients’ spirituality and health outcomes, medical care is increasingly focusing on treatment of the whole person. Through spirituality, individuals attempt to perceive their world, themselves, and their needs in terms of their connection to the self, others, nature and God. One cannot provide whole-person care without taking into consideration the relevant spiritual needs of patients. Music is capable of affecting spiritual aspects with emotional needs in health care and can contribute to the ‘wholeness’ perception of a person. The purpose of this review was to explore the definitions of spirituality, their value in healthcare, while additionally viewing the difference between religion and spirituality, and the link between emotions and spirituality and music’s effect on their potential role in healthcare. Über Spiritualität versuchen einzelne Menschen ihre Welt, sich selbst und ihre Bedürfnisse in Bezug auf ihre Verbindung zu sich selbst, zu anderen, zu Natur und Gott wahrzunehmen. Man kann einen Menschen als Ganzes nicht betreuen, ohne seine relevanten spirituellen Bedürfnisse zu berücksichtigen. Musik kann die spirituellen Aspekte mit emotionalen Bedürfnissen in der Gesundheitsfürsorge beeinflussen und zu der ganzheitlichen Betrachtung einer Person beitragen. Objective: To discuss the mechanism of action, the efficacy and the safety of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in the treatment of alcoholism. Method: The published works on effective treatments for alcoholism is briefly reviewed and a prospective multidisciplinar y follow-up of recovery from alcoholism in two community cohorts of adolescent males followed from 1940 until the present day is reviewed. Conclusions: The suggested mechanism of action of AA is that it employs four factors widely shown to be effective in relapse prevention in addictions: external supervision, substitute dependency, new caring relationships and increased spirituality. In addition, AA serendipitously follows the principles of cognitive behaviour therapy in relapse prevention. Alcoholics Anonymous appears equal to or superior to conventional treatments for alcoholism, and the skepticism of some professionals regarding AA as a first rank treatment for alcoholism would appear to be unwarranted. Alcoholics Anonymous is probably without serious side-effects.

Per garantire un’adeguata assistenza ai malati domiciliarizzati e già inseriti nel percorso delle cure palliative è talora necessario garantire un ricovero temporaneo, in ambito ospedaliero, per il tempo necessario ad eseguire manovre assistenziali non sempre facilmente realizzabili al domicilio come, ad esempio, il posizionamento di un catetere venoso centrale ad inserimento periferico (PICC) o la somministrazione di terapie antalgiche che possono richiedere manovre minimamente invasive. Per affrontare il “dolore totale” di un individuo nel proprio contesto socio-culturale e familiare il medico deve porre in atto quell’”approccio globale” che tiene conto di tutti gli aspetti fisici, psicologici, sociali, relazionali e spirituali del dolore, e attivare le possibili risorse che da tali valutazioni possono emergere (valorizzazione di approcci sistemici, delle reti amicali e di sostegno, organizzazione delle più appropriate reti di cura). Il dolore da cancro ha delle peculiarità rispetto al “dolore cronico” tout-court, spesso chiamato impropriamente dolore cronico “benigno” in quanto non provocato da patologia oncologica. Nel dolore oncologico il dolore non è l’unico sintomo ma fa parte di un corteo sintomatologico complesso, talora aggregato in cluster, talora meno prevedibile, per cui il trattamento del dolore si è rivelato più efficace quando inserito in una cura palliativa di più ampio respiro.

Abstract Religiosity and spirituality provide cancer patients with strength and confidence to face difficult situations during the process of seeking a cure, indicating that faith is an important element at this time. This systematic literature review analyzed the national and international scientific production to assess whether religious and spiritual practices facilitate therapeutic adherence and improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Level of evidence was classified using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Some articles showed that spirituality and religiosity positively influence treatment and patient well-being. In conclusion, cancer patients who use religiosity and spirituality as a strategy have grater hope in treatment; however, further in-depth studies are needed to ensure its effectiveness.

In a society of diverse views, faiths and beliefs, what can paediatric palliative care contribute to our understanding of children’s spirituality? By failing to recognise and respond to their spirituality in this work, we risk missing something of profound importance to children and their families. We overlook their search for wholeness in the absence of cure and fall short of offering truly holistic care. This paper explores how developments in advance care planning and related documentation are addressing these issues. Since children’s spirituality is elusive and rarely explored in practice, it aims to clarify our understanding of it with a variety of examples and contains suggestions for hearing the voice of the child amid the needs of parents and professionals.

An antidote is a cure for sickness. Corruption is danger sickness of this 21st century and the antidote to the corruption sickness is no other than spirituality. This viewpoint paper engages with the spiritual insights against corruption at the individual level that might be a fundamental dimension for good governance. It explores Vedas and some of the mystic’s views on corruption. It urges that anti-corruption laws and offices alone will not be able to cope with corruption because power doesn’t corrupt, people are corrupt. Corruption is inside peoples’ hearts and minds. Hence, along with the various dimensions of good governance, academia needs to motivate the development of spiritual insight in people. It will develop a playful attitude in individual life with peace in mind and compassion in heart, instead of competition, hatred, and rat race behind success, money, position, status, and power.

A pesquisa teve, como objetivo geral, compreender a procura de tratamento com benzedeiras, enquanto modo de cuidado. Os objetivos específicos foram: descrever as práticas curativas das benzedeiras; compreender a prática da benzeção, enquanto cuidado, e estudar a permanência desta prática na modernidade técnica. Foi desenvolvida por meio de pesquisa de natureza qualitativa numa perspectiva fenomenológica existencial. Os instrumentos utilizados foram a narrativa na perspectiva de Walter Benjamim e o diário de campo da pesquisadora. A fundamentação teórica foi a analítica existencial de Heidegger. As análises foram realizadas sob a ótica da hermenêutica filosófica de Gadamer, com ênfase nos conceitos de tradição e historicidade, no intuito de alcançar uma narrativa final, que será construída a partir do diálogo entre os participantes, a pesquisadora e o referencial teórico. O trabalho final resultou na presente tese, que foi dividida em quatro artigos. O primeiro artigo apresenta o estado da arte da benzeção, através das pesquisas e trabalhos desenvolvidos sobre benzeção, cuidado e espiritualidade, dentro da perspectiva fenomenológica, desenvolvidos no período de 2004 a 2012. O segundo apresenta a história e historicidade da benzeção dentro de um contexto de tradição. São levadas em consideração história e historicidade, na perspectiva heideggeriana e ainda o conceito de tradição na ótica de Gadamer. Utilizou-se os referenciais teóricos de Mary Del Priore e Michele Perrot. No terceiro artigo, discute-se a espiritualidade e benzeção. Procura-se refletir a busca do homem por tratamentos que incluam também a espiritualidade sem, no entanto abandonar os avanços próprios do atual contexto social atual. E, no quarto e último artigo, procura-se compreender a benzeção, enquanto modo de cuidado, em uma sociedade altamente tecnologizada e que fragmenta o homem, na sua oferta de tratamento de saúde. E ainda como esse homem concilia os avanços da técnica com as formas históricas provenientes da tradição, no modo de cuidado na saúde.

Este estudo apresenta uma pesquisa etnogrÃfica com o objetivo geral de descrever e compreender a experiÃncia formadora do adoecer e da busca de cura dos romeiros em Juazeiro do Norte. A metodologia foi construÃda com a utilizaÃÃo de entrevista com os romeiros, diÃrio de campo e observaÃÃes. As narrativas foram gravadas e transcritas, sendo realizada leitura flutuante dos relatos de campo e observaÃÃo, bem como das narrativas colhidas sendo codificadas e exploradas com leitura profunda, em busca exaustiva das similaridades entre os conteÃdos. Desta forma, foi realizada a organizaÃÃo do corpus em funÃÃo de dois temas norteadores, segundo a pertinÃncia das discussÃes emergidas dos elementos comuns associados aos objetivos da pesquisa e das narrativas dos romeiros: as concepÃÃes e prÃticas na experiÃncia da doenÃa e da busca de cura, sendo esta categoria gradativamente depurada em seus significados e nas unidades de contexto como concepÃÃo de cura, fÃ, saÃde, doenÃa e aprendizagem com o alcance de cura. A segunda categoria, os rituais na experiÃncia da busca de cura, foi referenciada por subcategorias: a relaÃÃo profissional e o serviÃo de saÃde-paciente, a performance de cura, o corpo como lugar de cura, o cenÃrio de cura, os procedimentos utilizados na busca de cura e as indumentÃrias. Foi realizada a construÃÃo do relatÃrio final sob o enfoque da antropologia da saÃde, que permitiu a comparaÃÃo do modelo biomÃdico de cura e a cura simbÃlica sobre a experiÃncia de busca de cura dos romeiros; a construÃÃo do cÃrculo de cura dos romeiros e os saberes e prÃticas em romaria; a discussÃo dos aspectos centrais do estudo como espiritualidade, religiÃo, religiosidade popular e relaÃÃo com a experiÃncia do adoecer e a saÃde. Por fim, a compreensÃo dos rituais como expressÃo transformativa e de aprendizagem e os saberes e prÃticas em romaria como elemento importante na construÃÃo do apoio social, da solidariedade e da fà que referencia a cura como uma relaÃÃo pedagÃgica de troca de experiÃncias e aprendizagens.
This study present an ethnographic research with a general goal of describing an understanding the experience of getting an the search of healing by the pilgrims in Juazeiro do Norte. The methodology used was interviewing the pilgrims, field diary an observations. The narrative was recorded an transcribed, meanwhile a scanning reading about the field reports and observation was carried on, as well as the abstained narratives which were codified an exploited by natives deep reading in search of exhaustive similarities between the contents. Therefore, the organization of the corpus was carried out in two grinding themes, according to the pertinences of the emerged discussions of the similar elements associated to the research goals and pilgrimsâ narratives, the conceptions and performances in the experience of illness and search for healing. This search for healing is little by little being purified on its meanings and the gradually units of contents as a conceptions of healing, faith, health-illness and learning that comes whit the achievement of healing. The second category, the rituals of experiencing search for healing, was referred in subcategories such as: professional relation and service of health-patient, healing performance, body where the healing occurs healing scenery, procedures used in search of healing and outfit. The final report was written emphasizing health anthropology which allowed the comparisons between the healing medical model and the symbolic healing of the experience of search for healing of the pilgrims; the beginning of the circle of pilgrims en pilgrimage; the scission of the main aspects of the study like spirituality, religions, popular religiousness and the relation with the experience of getting ill and health. At last understanding of rituals as a transformative expression, learning, the practical knowledge and performances in pilgrimage as an important role in social support, solidarity, faith which refers to healing as pedagogical relation of exchanging experiences and learning.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo pesquisar sobre o fenômeno religioso e a fé como dimensão da alteridade, assim como pesquisar possíveis relações com a Gestaltterapia do diálogo e cura. A pesquisa foi de natureza bibliográfica numa perspectiva fenomenológica e existencial que teve como fundamento as obras de Martin Buber da Filosofia do Diálogo e seu existencialismo religioso da eterna relação entre Eu-Tu, o Eu-Isso e o Tu eterno. Somado a este, também se problematizou a visão de Rudolf Otto do numinoso e outros autores como Mircea Eliade, teóricos da Gestaltterapia, Heidegger, Viktor Frankl, entre outros. Nossos resultados e discussões foram apresentados a partir de três dimensões. A primeira foi focalizar o fenômeno religioso em íntima relação com a noção da experiência de alteridade. The present study aimed to research the religious phenomenon and faith as a dimension of otherness , as well as investigate possible relations with Gestalt therapy dialogue and healing. The research was a phenomenological nature of literature and existential perspective that was founded the works of Martin Buber 's Philosophy of Dialogue and its religious existentialism of the eternal relationship between " I-Thou , I - It and the eternal Thou ." Added to this , also problematized the vision of Rudolf Otto 's numinous and other authors such as Mircea Eliade , Gestalt therapy theorists , Heidegger , Viktor Frankl , among others . Our results and discussions were presented from three dimensions . The first was to focus on the religious phenomenon intimately related to the notion of the experience of otherness . The second step was to search for a possible rapprochement between the thought of Gestalt Therapy and religious experience . Finally , we sought to understand Gestalt Therapy and Spirituality as a space for dialogue and healing.
O presente trabalho teve por objetivo pesquisar sobre o fenômeno religioso e a fé como dimensão da alteridade, assim como pesquisar possíveis relações com a Gestaltterapia do diálogo e cura. A pesquisa foi de natureza bibliográfica numa perspectiva fenomenológica e existencial que teve como fundamento as obras de Martin Buber da Filosofia do Diálogo e seu existencialismo religioso da eterna relação entre Eu-Tu, o Eu-Isso e o Tu eterno . Somado a este, também se problematizou a visão de Rudolf Otto do numinoso e outros autores como Mircea Eliade, teóricos da Gestaltterapia, Heidegger, Viktor Frankl, entre outros. Nossos resultados e discussões foram apresentados a partir de três dimensões. A primeira foi focalizar o fenômeno religioso em íntima relação com a noção da experiência de alteridade. O segundo passo consistiu em pesquisar sobre uma possível aproximação entre o pensamento da Gestaltterapia e a experiência religiosa. Por fim, se pretendeu compreender a Gestaltterapia e a espiritualidade como espaço de encontro do diálogo e cura.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of spirituality levels in a family during self-care and, if so, how this influence occurs. Vascocelos (2004) describes spirituality as strength able to help the individual, his/her family and community; it is also the best source to overcome the obstacles of life, providing a better understanding and tolerance about the issues of daily life. A qualitative approach was chosen for the study. The subjects were families that live in the area comprehended by the Jardim Gonzaga Family Health Unit, in the Jardim Gonzaga neighborhood, located in the periphery of São Carlos County. A group of 20 women, responsible for caring for their families and recognized in their community as having a high level of autonomy in their self-care when faced with health issues, were the main study subjects. Information was collected by means of interviews, with four guiding questions, which were asked in the participants houses or in the Family Health Unit. A thematic analysis was used to process the information. From the analysis of the interviews the following categories emerged: women as the main caretakers of their families; spirituality as a force that helps each individual in their self-care; the influence of spirituality in decisions and in the strength to overcome hardships in life. Among other conclusions, spirituality seems to exert an important influence in a family s self-care and faith helps in convalescence, in curing and in maintaining health. Health workers need to get closer to spirituality in order to broaden their knowledge and their tools to understand and care for human beings.
Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar se há influência da espiritualidade da família no cuidado de si, e caso fosse identificado, como ela ocorre. Vasconcelos (2004) descreve a espiritualidade como uma força capaz de auxiliar o indivíduo, família e comunidade, a melhor superar as dificuldades da vida, proporcionando uma melhor tolerância com os problemas da realidade cotidiana. A pesquisa caracterizou-se por ter uma abordagem qualitativa. O estudo foi desenvolvido com famílias pertencentes à área de abrangência da Unidade de Saúde da Família Jardim Gonzaga, no bairro Jardim Gonzaga, situada na periferia do município de São Carlos. Participaram desse estudo 20 mulheres, responsáveis pelo cuidado de famílias que se destacam na comunidade, pois apresentam autonomia no cuidado de si diante de problemas de saúde. A coleta de dados se deu através de entrevistas, com quatro questões norteadoras, realizadas no domicílio das participantes ou na Unidade de Saúde da Família. Para análise das informações, foi utilizada a análise temática. Da análise das entrevistas emergiram as seguintes categorias: A mulher como principal cuidadora da família; A espiritualidade como força que ajuda o indivíduo no cuidado; A influência da espiritualidade nas decisões e superação das dificuldades da vida. Entre vários aspectos, conclui-se que a espiritualidade influencia de maneira importante no cuidado de si da família; que a fé auxilia na recuperação, cura e manutenção da saúde. Os profissionais de saúde precisam se aproximar da espiritualidade de modo a ampliar os conhecimentos e as formas de entender e cuidar do ser humano.

This thesis aimed to analyze the meaning of religion for patients in palliative care and for their relatives. We start from the hypothesis that the approximation of religion and the development of religiosity and spirituality are fundamental to reduce the anguish provoked by the proximity of death among patients in palliative care and among their loved ones. It is an exploratory research of qualitative approach and historical method. To obtain the data, we conducted 11 interviews, 8 with patients and 3 with relatives of patients. The interviews were based on a semi-structured script with questions about the life history, religious experience and religion’s approach after the diagnosis of inability to cure. The interviews were realized at the Premier Hospital, on January 04th, 06th, 09th, 2017, and January 08th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 2018. During the month of December 2016, we visited the hospital every day to know the local routine and the hospitalized patients. For the construction of the script of questions and for the analysis of the data obtained from the interviews and the fieldwork, we adopted the historical method elaborated by Franz Boas (2004) and the hermeneutic analysis developed by Gadamer (1997). We also searched the history of the main concepts that guided our study. After analyzing and discussing the data of this research, we confirmed our hypothesis: we found that the majority of respondents came closer to religion after they were known to have incurable diseases
Esta tese teve como objetivo analisar o significado da religião para os pacientes em cuidados paliativos e para seus familiares. Parti da hipótese de que a aproximação da religião e o desenvolvimento da religiosidade e da espiritualidade são fundamentais para diminuir a angústia suscitada pela proximidade da morte entre os pacientes em cuidados paliativos e seus entes queridos. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória de abordagem qualitativa e método histórico. Para a obtenção dos dados, realizei 11 entrevistas, 8 com pacientes e 3 com familiares de pacientes. As entrevistas tiveram como base um roteiro semiestruturado com questões que versavam sobre a história de vida, vivência religiosa e aproximação da religião depois do diagnóstico de impossibilidade de cura, e foram realizadas no Hospital Premier, nos dias 04, 06 e 09 de janeiro de 2017, e 08, 10, 11, 12, 15 e 17 de janeiro de 2018. Durante o mês de dezembro de 2016, visitei diariamente o hospital para conhecer a rotina local e os pacientes internados. Para a construção do roteiro de questões e para a análise dos dados obtidos com as entrevistas e o trabalho de campo, adotei o método histórico elaborado por Franz Boas (2004) e a análise hermenêutica desenvolvida por Gadamer (1997). Pesquisei também a história dos principais conceitos que orientavam nosso estudo. Depois de realizar a análise e a discussão dos dados desta pesquisa, confirmei minha hipótese, ao constatar que a maior parte dos entrevistados aproximou-se mais da religião depois de saber ser portador de doença incurável

This study present an ethnographic research with a general goal of describing an understanding the experience of getting an the search of healing by the pilgrims in Juazeiro do Norte. The methodology used was interviewing the pilgrims, field diary an observations. The narrative was recorded an transcribed, meanwhile a scanning reading about the field reports and observation was carried on, as well as the abstained narratives which were codified an exploited by natives deep reading in search of exhaustive similarities between the contents. Therefore, the organization of the corpus was carried out in two grinding themes, according to the pertinences of the emerged discussions of the similar elements associated to the research goals and pilgrims’ narratives, the conceptions and performances in the experience of illness and search for healing. This search for healing is little by little being purified on its meanings and the gradually units of contents as a conceptions of healing, faith, health-illness and learning that comes whit the achievement of healing. The second category, the rituals of experiencing search for healing, was referred in subcategories such as: professional relation and service of health-patient, healing performance, body where the healing occurs healing scenery, procedures used in search of healing and outfit. The final report was written emphasizing health anthropology which allowed the comparisons between the healing medical model and the symbolic healing of the experience of search for healing of the pilgrims; the beginning of the circle of pilgrims en pilgrimage; the scission of the main aspects of the study like spirituality, religions, popular religiousness and the relation with the experience of getting ill and health. At last understanding of rituals as a transformative expression, learning, the practical knowledge and performances in pilgrimage as an important role in social support, solidarity, faith which refers to healing as pedagogical relation of exchanging experiences and learning.
Este estudo apresenta uma pesquisa etnográfica com o objetivo geral de descrever e compreender a experiência formadora do adoecer e da busca de cura dos romeiros em Juazeiro do Norte. A metodologia foi construída com a utilização de entrevista com os romeiros, diário de campo e observações. As narrativas foram gravadas e transcritas, sendo realizada leitura flutuante dos relatos de campo e observação, bem como das narrativas colhidas sendo codificadas e exploradas com leitura profunda, em busca exaustiva das similaridades entre os conteúdos. Desta forma, foi realizada a organização do corpus em função de dois temas norteadores, segundo a pertinência das discussões emergidas dos elementos comuns associados aos objetivos da pesquisa e das narrativas dos romeiros: as concepções e práticas na experiência da doença e da busca de cura, sendo esta categoria gradativamente depurada em seus significados e nas unidades de contexto como concepção de cura, fé, saúde, doença e aprendizagem com o alcance de cura. A segunda categoria, os rituais na experiência da busca de cura, foi referenciada por subcategorias: a relação profissional e o serviço de saúde-paciente, a performance de cura, o corpo como lugar de cura, o cenário de cura, os procedimentos utilizados na busca de cura e as indumentárias. Foi realizada a construção do relatório final sob o enfoque da antropologia da saúde, que permitiu a comparação do modelo biomédico de cura e a cura simbólica sobre a experiência de busca de cura dos romeiros; a construção do círculo de cura dos romeiros e os saberes e práticas em romaria; a discussão dos aspectos centrais do estudo como espiritualidade, religião, religiosidade popular e relação com a experiência do adoecer e a saúde. Por fim, a compreensão dos rituais como expressão transformativa e de aprendizagem e os saberes e práticas em romaria como elemento importante na construção do apoio social, da solidariedade e da fé que referencia a cura como uma relação pedagógica de troca de experiências e aprendizagens.

This work has as main objective to understand the experience of treatment in spiritism and specific objectives, describing the types of treatment offered in spiritualism understand the meaning that leads people to seek this mode of treatment, understanding the experience of treatment and its possible contributions to mental health. The research is qualitative phenomenological perspective. Obviously, there are different treatment modalities in spiritism, however the choice of the participants followed the pattern of volunteering without restricting the type of treatment undergone, gender, reason as to demand treatment or age. Participants were followed up at Spiritual Hospital Patrícia Bacelar (HEPB - Camaragibe / PE). As research instruments, the narrative from Walter Benjamin and the field diary were used to get access to treatment experience in spiritualism. The theoretical framework has been constructed based on the theory Frankl, who understands spirituality as the human dimension, in line with results of this research. To analyze the results, we used the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer, who reached a final narrative constructed from the dialogue between the participants, the researcher and the theoretical framework that justified the search. Our results reveal an eminent search for other care that not only the doctor, as well as the use of religious resources as complementary to medical practice. Most of the reports demonstrated the continuity of medical treatments simultaneously spiritual treatment. In this context, the stimulus accountability of the individual for self-care while transcendence proved crucial for adherence to medical treatment as well as to overcome situations of intense suffering.
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo geral compreender a experiência de tratamento no espiritismo e, como objetivos específicos, descrever as modalidades de tratamento oferecidas pelo espiritismo, compreender o sentido que leva pessoas a buscarem esse modo de tratamento, compreender a experiência de tratamento e suas possíveis contribuições à saúde mental. A pesquisa é de natureza qualitativa na perspectiva fenomenológica. É sabido que existem diferentes modalidades de tratamento no espiritismo, no entanto a escolha dos participantes seguiu o padrão de voluntariado, não restringindo o tipo de tratamento submetido, gênero, motivo quanto à procura do tratamento ou idade. Os participantes estavam em acompanhamento no Hospital Espiritual Patrícia Bacelar (HEPB Camaragibe/PE). Como instrumentos da pesquisa, a narrativa a partir de Walter Benjamim e o diário de campo foram utilizados para se ter acesso à experiência de tratamento no espiritismo. A fundamentação teórica foi construída com base na teoria de Frankl, que compreende a espiritualidade como dimensão do humano, em consonância com resultados desta pesquisa. Para a análise dos resultados, utilizamos a hermenêutica filosófica de Gadamer, que alcançou uma narrativa final construída a partir do diálogo entre os participantes, a pesquisadora e o referencial teórico que fundamentou a pesquisa. Nossos resultados revelam uma eminente busca por outro cuidado que não apenas o médico, bem como o uso de recursos religiosos como complementares à prática médica. Em sua maioria, os relatos apontam para a continuidade dos tratamentos médicos simultaneamente ao tratamento espiritual. Nesse contexto, o estímulo à responsabilização do indivíduo por seu autocuidado enquanto autotranscendência se mostrou fundamental para adesão ao tratamento médico, bem como para a superação de situações de intenso sofrimento.

O diagnóstico do câncer, aliado ao órgão que este acomete, traz implicações significativas como no caso do câncer de mama para as mulheres, por apresentar relações com a feminilidade e sexualidade e ao processo de tratamento em busca da cura, destacando-se a radioterapia, indicada pelo menos para a metade das pacientes e que ocasiona efeitos colaterais que comprometem o bem estar. Diante dessa situação, pode existir sentimentos que propiciam conflitos existenciais, afetando tanto a dimensão espiritual, expresso pelo fenômeno angústia espiritual, quanto a dimensão emocional, que pode favorecer o aparecimento de morbidade psicológica. Para enfrentar tal situação, as mulheres podem fazer uso de estratégias cognitivas e comportamentais relacionadas à religiosidade e à espiritualidade, como a denominada coping religioso/espiritual. Ainda, como meio de enfrentar essa nova fase de vida, os recursos religiosos, como a oração podem se mostrar presentes. Entretanto, os efeitos que a oração pode proporcionar ainda são alvo de questionamentos, despertando, assim, motivos para investigá-la. O presente estudo teve por propósito avaliar o efeito da prece de intercessão na medida de angústia espiritual, de morbidade psicológica (ansiedade e depressão), de coping religioso/espiritual e de amilase salivar em pacientes com câncer de mama em tratamento radioterápico. Para tanto, realizou-se um ensaio clínico aleatorizado, duplo cego, no período de setembro de 2015 a maio de 2016. Participaram 31 pacientes, sendo 16 alocados no grupo intervenção e 15 no grupo controle; foi realizada coleta de dados em três tempos: antes da intervenção ser implementada (T0), na metade (T1) e no término das sessões do tratamento de radioterapia de cada paciente (T2), o qual inclui as doses de reforço (boost). No T0 houve coleta dos dados referentes às variáveis sociodemográficas, clínicas e de religiosidade, bem como das escalas de angústia espiritual, de ansiedade e depressão hospitalar e de coping religioso/espiritual e, ainda, da amilase salivar, que complementou a avaliação da ansiedade. Após o T0, um grupo de seis pessoas cristãs iniciaram uma oração, em ambiente extra hospitalar, com a frequência de uma hora por dia até o término do tratamento para as pessoas aleatorizadas no grupo intervenção. Nos demais tempos do estudo, T1 e T2, as avaliações foram realizadas por meio dos instrumentos já descritos e da amilase salivar. Identificou-se que a variável angústia espiritual apresentou mudanças significativas, tanto na fase do pós-teste T2 na análise intergrupo (p=0,021) com tamanho do efeito considerado de grande magnitude (ES=0,962) quanto nas fases entre o pós-teste T2 com T0 na análise intragrupo (p=0,004). Na análise intragrupo também se verificou mudanças significativas para as variáveis coping religioso/espiritual negativo, tanto nas fases entre T1 com T0 (p=0,049) quanto entre T2 com T0 (p=0,028), bem como para coping religioso/espiritual total entre as fases T2 e T0 (p=0,014). Conclui-se que a oração intercessória mostrou-se efetiva com relação à redução de angústia espiritual e teve efeito nos escores da escala coping religioso/espiritual, isto é, no modo de enfrentar a situação vivenciada, buscando estratégias religiosas e espirituais para resolver o problema
The diagnosis of cancer, together with the organ that it affects, has significant implications as in the case of breast cancer for women, because it presents relationships with femininity and sexuality and the treatment process in search of cure, especially radiotherapy, indicated for at least half of the patients causes side effects that compromise the well being. Given this situation, women can experience feelings that lead to existential conflicts, affecting both their spiritual dimension, expressed by spiritual anguish, and their emotional dimension, which may favor the appearance of psychological morbidity. To address such a situation, women can make use of cognitive and behavioral strategies related to religiosity and spirituality, such as religious / spiritual coping. Yet, prayer can be used as religious resource and a mean of facing this new phase of life. However, the effects of prayer remain under questioning, and require further research. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of intercessory prayer in the measure of spiritual distress, psychological morbidity (anxiety and depression), religious / spiritual coping and salivary amylase patients with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy. A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted between September 2015 and May 2016. Participated 31 patients, being 16 allocated in the intervention group and 15 in the control group; was performed data collection in three times: before the intervention was implemented (T0), half (T1) and at the end of the sessions of the treatment of radiotherapy of each patient (T2), which includes the doses of reinforcement (boost). In the T0, data on sociodemographic, clinical and religious variables were collected, as well as on the spiritual distress, anxiety and hospital depression and religious / spiritual coping and salivary alpha-amylase scales, which complemented the assessment of anxiety. After T0, a group of six Christian individuals started a prayer in an extra-hospital environment at the frequency of one hour a day until the end of the treatment for those randomized in the intervention group. At the other times of the study, T1 and T2, the assessments were performed using the previously described instruments and salivary alpha-amylase. The variable spiritual anguish have presented significant changes, both in the post-test phase T2 in the intergroup analysis (p = 0.021) with size of the effect considered of great magnitude (ES = 0.962), and in the phases between post-test T2 with the T0 in the intragroup analysis (p = 0.004). Significant changes have been found in the religious / spiritual negative coping variables, both in the phases between T1 with T0 (p = 0.049) and between T2 with T0 (p = 0.028), as well as for total religious / spiritual coping between phases T2 and T0 (p = 0.014). Intercessory prayer was effective in decreasing spiritual distress and had effect on the scores of the religious / spiritual coping scale, that is, in the way of facing the lived experience, and using religious and spiritual strategies seeking to overcome the problem

This chapter explores the far-reaching influences in American religion and medicine of Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish scientist and mystic, and Franz Anton Mesmer, who developed Mesmerism, the forerunner of hypnosis. Swedenborg’s theology filtered into homeopathy and the religious movements of Shakerism, Transcendentalism, Unitarianism, Mormonism, modernist Buddhism, Theosophy, Spiritualism, and New Thought. Mesmer’s theories about illness contributed to the development of osteopathy, chiropractic, and hypnotherapy. Before the development of chemical anesthesia, some nineteenth-century doctors performed complex and successful surgeries on patients who were sedated only by hypnotic suggestion. Ideas and practices derived from Mesmer and Swedenborg converged in the nineteenth-century mental-healing practice of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a New England clockmaker and the first American to discover that beliefs and mental states can affect one’s physical health.

THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE CANONS REGULAR OF PENANCE OF THE BLESSED MARTYRS The Order of the Canons Regular of Penance of the Blessed Martyrs presented a typical spirituality of the times of its foundation – crusades – with a predominant role of the devotion to the Passion and to Our Lady, naturally coupled with other important elements of Christian spirituality. The communal life was based on liturgy and private prayer. These substantial and fundamental dimensions of spirituality had been defining the community for seven centuries, and shaping internally the friars in white habits, who took middle ground between so called mendicant orders, aiming at active, even wandering, apostolic work, and monk communities; which is to say they combined profound inner life with apostolic activities. The canons of penance acted, therefore, in the Augustinian spirit and maintained complete spiritual harmony, embracing both act and contemplation, cura animarum (priestly spirituality) and quasi-monastic spirituality, where communal life, penance, and fervent adherence to the vows were the core of the life in the convent. Only in light of their spirituality, one can have a better understanding of both the interior design of their temples and, more importantly, their daily life, actions, and preaching that contributed to the emergence of the characteristic features of devotion in Poland.

This chapter explores the Spiritualist movement and its rapid growth due to the formation of mass media and compares these events with the current rise of fake news in the mass media. The technology of cheaper publications created a media platform that featured stories about Spiritualist mediums and communications with the spirit world. These articles were published in newspapers next to regular news creating a blurred line between real and hoax news stories. Laws were later created to address instances of fraud that occurred in the medium industry. Today, social media platforms provide a similar vessel for the spread of fake news. Online fake news is published alongside legitimate news reports leaving readers unable to differentiate between real and fake articles. Around the world countries are actioning initiatives to address the proliferation of false news to prevent the spread of misinformation. This chapter compares the parallels between these events, how hoaxes and fake news begin and spread, and examines the measures governments are taking to curb the growth of misinformation.

This chapter considers ethical and spiritual issues related to intellectual disability. Consideration of the meaning of life of an intellectually disabled person must take into account how society defines and responds to individual differences. There are ethical and religious concerns regarding prenatal diagnosis and questions of how to teach ethical behavior to persons with intellectual disability. Participation in religious practices in the community and in group home settings is important for families and persons with intellectual disability. This chapter reviews these issues in detail. In biblical times, there were edicts about disability that offer insight into attitudes toward disabled people. There is an Old Testament injunction: “Thou shalt not curse the deaf, put a stumbling block before the blind, nor maketh the blind wander out of a path” (Leviticus 19:14). This may be the first Western command to legislate for the protection of the deaf and handicapped. Moreover, deaf persons without speech were viewed as children and provided the same protections as children. Yet, the threat of disability was also an element in biblical injunctions: “If you do not follow his commandments and decrees . . . all these curses will become upon you and overtake you: The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and confusion of mind. At midday, you will grope around like a man in the dark” (Deuteronomy 28:15). Although help for those with disabilities was seen as a charitable obligation, disability was perceived potentially as a punishment from God. Ancient people often believed that illness was inflicted by a deity or supernatural power (Rosen, 1968). In records dating back before 2000 B.C., the birth of children with congenital impairments were used to predict the future of the community. In Babylonia, those who prophesized about the future kept a list of birth deformities and the specific meaning and prophecy that these disabilities foretold. Although a disability was viewed as a portent of things to come (Braddock and Parish, 2002) or punishment for immorality, there also existed the attitude that the disabled should be treated with compassion. The New Testament provides insight into how attitudes about disability evolved.

The concept of “Homeodynamic Environments and Products” is proposed to understand the environment-product-human organism relationship from the inseparable connection between body, mind and spirituality. This concept is coined by the co-founders of the DASMind – UNICAMP [iar.unicamp.br/dasmind]. Three pillars guide the applications of the “Homeodynamic Environments and Products” concept: [1] “Homeodynamic Architectural Environments,” preventive and/or restorative, relate to applying the concept to the study, planning, design and construction of architectural environments. This pillar aims to analyze and understand the user’s environments, whether residential, educational, cultural, corporate, commercial, among others, in the body, mind, spirituality relationship. Whether in the design or physical sphere, it reveals the cooperation between the architectural elements and the human organism to restore the body’s homeodynamic balance, aiming at its health and well-being. Associated with smart biointerfaces (ZUANON, 2013-2020), this pillar also evaluates and verifies the level of homeodynamic quality of environments in their various purposes: care; cure; labor; exchange of knowledge; leisure; among others. Based on the evaluation, it proposes design solutions conducive to the inner balance of its users, aligned with the purpose of each environment. [2] “Homeodynamic Urban Environments” are supported by urban fabrics, although they do not necessarily represent a simple change of scale, from the architectural scale to the urban scale. In other words, reflecting on the relationships that aim to promo or restore the health and well-being of individuals, as inhabitants or users of the city, in many cases relates to the actual scale of urban design, to the interstice of buildings, to green areas, to small squares and other open urban environments (ZUANON et al., 2020). Moreover, this pillar signals a throwback to classic urban planners who were pioneers in focusing on spatial perception and the relationships of territoriality, privacy, personalization and crowding (MONTEIRO and TURCZYN, 2018). The various humanization studies also provide valuable groundwork for “Homeodynamic Urban Environments,” which, alongside smart biointerfaces (ZUANON, 2013-2020), transfer important contributions to design and the implementation of healthy cities. [3] “Homeodynamic Products,” whether preventive and/or restorative, relate to the study, design and development of physical, digital and/or physical-digital products capable of “feeling” and “reacting” in real time and empathically to the neuropsychophysiological condition of their users, without interrupting the performance of their routine activities. This pillar operates in deep convergence with smart biointerfaces. In this sense, it correlates contributions from affective computing, cognitive computing, computer vision and wearable computing with the transdisciplinary and complex framework of its concept (ZUANON, 2013-2020). In this intimate connection with the human organism, homeodynamic products provide access to and interaction with the neurobiological scale of affects, emotions and feelings, during different experiences centered on the human being, whether in architectural or urban environments. Furthermore, they enable a consistent interpretation of the body’s overall conditions in response to the somatosensory and sensorimotor stimuli produced by those environments.Thus, in establishing a direct relationship with the human organism, “Homeodynamic Environments and Products,” whether preventive and/or restorative, in their architectural, urban and object scales, prove to be greatly relevant to life regulation and survival, in both current and future social contexts.
