Abstract The Colegio Menor de San Andrés (Minor College of St Andrew), studium generale of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance in the Iberian Peninsula in the 16th century, and the Colegio menor de San Cirilo (Minor College of St Cyril), founded in 1570, the first of the Discalced Carmelites, represented, in relation to the Teresian Order, viorous bases of theological and philosophical formation within the context of the Catholic Reformation. The minor colleges, which were attached to congregations and religious orders, played a relevant role in the 16th century, of special interest to the crowns and the Church, generating repercussions in the subsequent educational formation even in America, especially in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In this sense, from the methodology of the history of universities, this research aims to identify historical and pedagogical elements of the foundation of the Colegio Menor de San Cirilo (the Complutense, in Alcalá), which will serve to explain the subsequent continuity of Carmelite studies in the Peninsula and in the New World, especially with regard to the intellectual production and teaching practices of the minor colleges. Bearing in mind their relevance, their considerable influence on the first Discalced Carmelites, including those who settled in Mexico, and the prestige acquired by their collective works published in the period of the philosophical and theological courses, we will seek to present the foundations already present in the Colegio Menor de San Andrés, which was the Salamantine college prior to the Reformation and which engendered the success of the later Complutense.

Annotation:
People often base their behaviors on social norms—what they think others do or approve of. This is likely true of fruit and vegetable (FV) intake as well. College students typically don’t get enough FV. We attempted to encourage FV eating by providing students with messages or demonstrations that eating FV is normal. First, we tried to encourage FV intake by providing students with messages regarding the average skin carotenoid concentration and where they fit within their peers (Chapter II). Carotenoids are compounds found in FV that cannot be made by the body, making them an estimate of FV intake. We found that students did not increase their self-reported FV intake or skin carotenoids as a result of these social norms messages, messages about the recommendation for FV or no message at all. We then added an approval/disapproval message (as ☺︎, :| or ☹︎ ) to the average carotenoid scores and where a student fit within their peers’ scores (Chapter V). This resulted in small increases in self-reported FV intake and skin carotenoids for those receiving the approval/disapproval message and those who only got information about the average score of their peers and where they fit within the average. To test whether self-report was influenced by messages regarding social norms, we sent out messages telling students they were lower than average—whether this was true or not, higher than average, providing the recommendation for FV, no message. Those told they were lower than their peers reported a half-cup increase in FV intake immediately after receiving the message. Finally, we attempted to influence student’s FV intake by having other students come into a weekly class, pose as students in the class and eat vegetables (Chapter III). We found that those exposed to these vegetable-eating students were no more likely to increase FV than those not exposed to it. Overall, we found very small or no effects from any of the included studies and that self-reported FV intake should be interpreted with caution. Interventions that include other factors, such as time, cost, availability or knowledge/skills, might increase FV more than social norms alone.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of specific textual and contextual materials to bridge the gap between the student's present level o proficiency in a target language and the level of proficiency required to perform a listening comprehension task in that language. This study also tested for interaction between the use of the textual and contextual materials and the learning modality of the students. In addition, confounding effects by either learning modality and foreign language classroom anxiety were controlled.Listening comprehension was assessed by a fourteen-item multiple-choice test in Spanish developed by the researcher. Learning modality was established by the Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise developed by H. Reinert. Foreign language class anxiety was measured by the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale developed by Elaine Horwitz, Michael Horwitz, and Joann Cope.A group of 198 college students enrolled in nine second-semester Spanish classes at Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana participated in the study. Three classes were randomly assigned to each of the three treatments: the contextual cue, the textual cue, and neither one.A three factor 3 x 3 x 2 fixed effects factorial design was used to analyze the data gathered in the study. Four null hypotheses were tested. The .05 level of significance was established as the critical probability level for the non-acceptance of the hypotheses.Findings1. There are significant effects attributable to a textual cue on recall measures of listening comprehension.2. There are no significant effects attributable to a contextual cue on recall measures of listening comprehension.3. There are no significant interactions between the use of the textual cue and the learning modality of the students.4. There are no significant interactions between the use of the contextual cue and the learning modality of the students.5. There are no significant effects attributable to learning modality on recall measures of listening comprehension.6. There are significant effects attributable to foreign language classroom anxiety on recall measures of listening comprehension.Conclusions1. Textual cues support listening comprehension tasks but contextual cues do not.2. The effect of a semantic cue can not be affected by the learning modality of the student.3. Learning modality by itself does not affect student comprehension of a listening task.4. Foreign language class anxiety inhibits student performance during a listening comprehension task.

This study applied a visual attentional task to evaluated the attentional and evaluative biases for smoking-related images after exposure to alcohol (IA) or control (IC) images. Subjects were 40 college drinker and smokers (19 to 30 years old, mean 23 yrs), randomly assigned for IA or IC conditions. Also problem drinking (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) and severity of nicotine dependence (Questionário de Tolerância de Fagerströn) were assessed. Smokers showed attentional and evaluative biases for smoking-related images. Previous exposure to drinking cues increased the evaluative but not the attentional bias for smokingrelated images. There was a high frequency of problem drinkers, but a low degree of nicotine dependence in this sample. The implications of these findings for prevention of smoking and abusive drinking among college students were discussed.

According to literature, particularly from data obtained from the World Health Organisation, physical inactivity or sedentarism is one of the leading causes of the major non-communicable diseases, which contributes substantially to the global burden of diseases, death and disability. The burden of mortality, morbidity and disability attributable to non-communicable diseases is currently greatest and is continuing to grow in the developing countries. Most declines in physical activity are during the transition from high school to college or university. The aim of the study was to ascertain perceptions of physical activity, specifically
perceived benefits of, perceived barriers and perceived helpful motivational factors to physical activity among tertiary institution students in Rwanda, and to find out whether demographic and background characteristics have an influence on these perceptions.

Abstract During its first forty-odd years, professional football was the raggedy step child of the glamorous college game. The pros took their cues about the rules and how to play the game from the college authorities. The major collegiate football powers were far better known and more popular than the top pro teams well into the 1930s, outdrawing the pros in their own localities by five to one.

Just as senior administrative roles in higher education are political, the role of a college student government holds similar responsibility as a function of an institution. The intersections of college student government and social justice are necessary to explore in order for senior administrators to share responsibility with and for students. Issues of social justice are being taken up on college campuses across the United States. It is common for student governments to legislate and engage with local, state, and even inter/national issues. The political nature of higher education has enabled and almost forced student governments to take up a wide array of concerns, leaving campus administrators—and students—to look for cues as to where to spend (limited) time, energy, and resources. This chapter illuminates a range of politics and current events, factors associated with institutional and individual influence(s), and final recommendations for higher education practice.

Tissue engineering focuses on developing replacement tissues and organs to maintain, restore, or improve their function. To achieve this goal, an optimal scaffold is required to promote cell growth and biomolecules release involved in the repair process. In tissues, the extracellular matrix (ECM) provides spatial and mechanical cues to cells and physical support. Therefore, creating a scaffold that mimics the ECM of a tissue or organ of interest to facilitate its repair represents an urgent need. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the ECM and is essential for maintaining the biological and structural integrity of the tissue as well as providing physical support. Collagen-based scaffolds can be obtained from a decellularized collagen matrix, preserving the original tissue shape and ECM structure, or by extracting, purifying, and polymerizing collagen alone or with other natural or biosynthetic polymers and ceramics, which can be chemically or physically cross-linked, modified with natural/synthetic polymers or inorganic materials, or supplemented with biochemical factors. The properties of collagen for obtaining tissue engineering products and the intellectual property of collagen-based scaffolds in clinical trials and patents are discussed. Here, we described the importance of collagen for tissue and organ repair.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ1) teens are at higher risk of illness as a result of bias but are less likely than peers to attend well visits. Medical organizations recommend improving care through staff education, visual cues, and routine inquiry of sexual orientation and gender identity (SO/GI) and pronouns. It is unknown how to do this confidentially in pediatrics. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to confidentially collect and document SO/GI and pronouns early in at least 90% of teen acute care visits.

This chapter draws from the authors’ clinical work with women with eating disorders, as well as theories of embodiment and mindfulness, to reveal the attunement with exercise (AWE) construct. AWE represents physical activities that shift away from dysfunctional forms of exercise to cultivate more positively embodied physical experiences, such as mindful attention, self-compassion, self-acceptance, joyful movement, body connection, and reliance on internal cues to determine when, what, where, why, and how to exercise. The chapter reviews the conceptual model of AWE, which entails exercising from a foundation of safety, focusing on the process of exercise rather than any outcome, and experiencing joy from exercise. Next, the chapter introduces the AWE Scale, which has been shown to yield reliable and valid scores in community and college samples of women and men. The chapter ends with a discussion of how to cultivate AWE as an embodied practice, with yoga provided as an illustration.

This chapter introduces the underlying principles of decision making. You will be encouraged to consider decision making as a student in university together with decision making as a student nurse (see Chapter 1 ). In 2010, following a review of pre-registration nursing education, the professional body for nursing in the United Kingdom, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), published new Standards for Pre-Registration Nursing Education , including competencies that all students must achieve to qualify as a registered nurse. These competencies have to be met in four broad areas known as ‘domains’. 1. Professional values 2. Communication and interpersonal skills 3. Nursing practice and decision making 4. Leadership, management, and team working You will find reference to these domains throughout the book, and there will be an opportunity to learn how the competencies in each of these that relate to decision making can be linked to your clinical and university-based learning. There are a number of terms that can be found in the literature that are often used interchangeably; you may see terms such as ‘decision making’, ‘problem solving’, ‘clinical reasoning’ or ‘clinical judgement’, and others used when writers are discussing how and why nurses respond to clinical situations in a particular way (see Chapter 1 for more detail). For example, Levett-Jones et al. (2010: 515) provide a helpful definition of clinical reasoning as ‘the process by which nurses collect cues, process the information, come to an understanding of a patient problem or situation, plan and implement interventions, evaluate outcomes, and reflect on and learn from the process’. They also emphasize that a nurse’s ability to develop these clinical reasoning skills depends on what they term as ‘five rights’—that is, the nurse’s ability ‘to collect the right cues and to take the right action for the right patient at the right time and for the right reason’. In the context of ensuring that any patient receives the best possible care, these ‘five rights’ are very appropriate, and indeed if one were to fail to pick up on the right cues and to take the appropriate actions in many clinical situations, the outcome may have serious repercussions for the nurse and the patient.

Abstract The development, growth, and response to injury of the blood vasculature depend in part on interactions of vessel wall cells with their extracellular matrix (ECM). In addition to providing cues for other cells, the endothelial ECM directs many of the functions and responses of the endothelium itself. Since changes in endothelial cell behaviour (for example attachment, proliferation, biosynthetic activity, and/or migration) have been causally linked to one or more specific ECM macromolecules, identification of matrix-associated proteins secreted by endothelial cells has become critical to our understanding of vascular cell biology. Few proteins, with the exception of von Willebrand protein, have been shown to be specific to endothelial cells. Although several of them were either initially described or studied extensively as products of endothelial cells in vitro, extracellular proteins such as fibronectin, laminin, plasminogen activators and their inhibitors, various collagen types, thrombo-spondin (TSP), and SPARC, have been ascribed functions within a broad range of cells and tissues. Because of their potential role in the regulation of endothelial cell growth, three of these proteins have been chosen as subjects for this chapter: type VIII collagen, TSP, and SPARC.

Architects design spaces that offer perceptual cues, affordances, for our various effectivities. Lina Bo Bardi’s São Paulo Museum demonstrates how praxic and contemplative actions are interleaved—space is effective and affective. Navigation often extends beyond wayfinding to support ongoing behavior. Scripts set out the general rules for a particular kind of behavior, and may suggest places that a building must provide. Cognitive maps support wayfinding. Other maps in the brain represent sensory or motor patterns of activity. Juhani Pallasmaa’s reflections on The Thinking Hand lead into a view of how the brain mediates that thinking, modeling hand–eye coordination at two levels. The first coordinates perceptual and motor schemas. The body schema is an adaptable collage of perceptual and motor skills. The second coordinates the ventral “what” pathway that can support planning of actions, and the dorsal “how” pathway that links affordance-related details to motor control. A complementary challenge is understanding how schemas in the head relate to social schemas. Finally, the chapter compares the cognitive challenges in designing a building and in developing a computational brain model of cognitive processes.

During development, neurites are directed by gradients of attractive and repulsive soluble (chemotactic) cues and substrate-bound adhesive (haptotactic) cues. Many of these cues have been extensively researched in vitro, and incorporated into strategies for nerve and spinal cord regeneration, primarily to improve the regenerative environment. To enhance and direct growth, we have developed a system to create 1D gradients of adhesion through a 3D collagen gel using microfluidics. We test our system using collagen grafted with bioactive peptide sequences, IKVAV and YIGSR, from laminin — an extra-cellular matrix (ECM) protein known to strongly influence neurite outgrowth. Gradients are established from ∼0.37mg peptide/mg collagen – 0, and ∼0.18 mg peptide/mg collagen – 0 of each peptide and tested using chick dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Neurite growth is evaluated 5 days after gradient formation. Neurites show increased growth in the gradient system when compared to control and biased growth up the gradient of peptides. Growth in YIGSR-grafted collagen increased with steeper gradients, whereas growth in IKVAV-grafted collagen decreased with steeper gradients. These results demonstrate that neurite growth can be enhanced and directed by controlled, immobilized, haptotactic gradients through 3D scaffolds, and suggest that including these gradients in regenerative therapies may accelerate nerve and spinal cord regeneration.

Background. Concurrent use of alcohol and cannabis (CAM) has been shown to be common among college students (Bravo et al., 2021), and is associated with more alcohol use and related negative consequences (Cummings et al., 2019). There is evidence that both alcohol and cannabis use may be associated with changes in brain functioning and cognition (Oomen et al., 2018), including differences on tasks related to cognitive inhibition/inhibitory control (i.e., Go/NoGo tasks; Lopez-Caneda et al., 2014). A promising method for assessing potential neurocognitive changes associated with alcohol and cannabis use is by examining substance-associated event-related potentials (ERPs) using electroencephalography (EEG; Zhang et al., 2021). The present study aimed to examine differences in P300 ERPs associated with alcohol cues between binge drinking alcohol only students and binge drinking students who also consumed cannabis in the past 30-days (i.e., CAM use). Method. Fifty binge drinking college students (26 of whom also reported using cannabis over the past 30 days) were recruited from a Psychology department research pool to participate in an alcohol-related Cued Go/NoGo task while their brainwaves were measured. The task was characterized by within-subjects factors block (indicating probability of Go/NoGo task cue-target combinations), Cue (Alcohol vs. Neutral), and Target (Go vs. NoGo). Participants identified as mostly White (78%), female (72%), were freshman (64%), and reported a mean age of 18.86 (SD=0.90). To test study aims, at electrode Cz, we conducted a 2x2x2x2 mixed ANOVA with all within-subjects factors (Block, Cue, Target), and between-subjects factor CAM over the past 30 days (CAM use vs. No CAM use). Results. We observed a significant block*target*CAM interaction with a medium effect size (Richardson, 2011), F(1,47)=4.09, p=.049, η2=.08. Cue was retained as a factor in subsequent analyses in order to effectively evaluate the hypothesis. In Block 2, we found a non-significant cue*CAM interaction, F(1,47)=3.10, p=.085, η2=.06, with a medium effect size. Paired-samples t-tests revealed that individuals who used cannabis did not display a significant difference between alcohol and neutral cues, t(25)=0.243, p=.81, while individuals who did not use cannabis showed significantly greater alcohol vs. neutral cues, t(23)=2.34, p=.025. Conclusions. While preliminary, we observed a significant difference in P300 ERPs for alcohol vs. neutral cues, only in individuals who did not report using cannabis over the past 30-days. In other words, we found that CAM using individuals display similar neural reactivity to alcohol compared to neutral cues, while an alcohol vs. neutral difference was observed for alcohol-only individuals. It may be that by using another substance, alcohol stimuli lose salience, and evaluative processing indexed by the P300 is reduced. These are interesting results to be observed within a non-clinical sample of mostly-freshman college students, and provides rationale for examining neuropsychological differences between individuals who use multiple substances versus one substance in populations with more severe levels of dependence.

Biomaterial scaffolds that present defined microenvironmental cues (e.g., nano-topography) to cells have shown promise for a variety of tissue engineering applications. However, the specific cues best suited for promoting the formation of aligned, fibrous tissues such as tendon are not fully understood. In this study, we utilize a micro-photopatterning (μPP) model system to precisely arrange scaffold-mimicking microenvironmental cues and investigate their role in the formation of tendon-like neo-tissues. Our data show that scaffold architectural features at both nano- and micro-length scales may be important parameters for directing tendon-like cell organization and the formation of aligned, fibrillar collagen.

Annotation:
A promising treatment for damaged cartilage is to replace it with tissue-engineered (TE) cartilage. However, the insufficient load-bearing capacity of today’s TE cartilage is an important limiting factor in its clinical application. In native cartilage, collagen fibers resist tension and proteoglycans (PG’s) attract water through osmotic pressure and resist its flow, which allows cartilage to withstand high compressive forces. One of the main challenges for tissue engineering of mechanically stable cartilage is therefore to find the cues to create an engineered tissue with an ultrastructure similar to that of native tissue. Currently, it is possible to tissue engineer cartilage with almost native PG content but collagen reaches only 1/4 of the native content [1]. Furthermore, the specific depth dependent arcade-like organization of collagen in native cartilage (i.e. vertical fibers in the deep zone and horizontal fibers in the superficial zone), which is optimized for distributing loads, has not been addressed in TE’d cartilage. However, the relative importance of matrix component content and collagen network architecture to the mechanical performance of TE cartilage is poorly understood, perhaps because this would require substantial effort on time consuming and labor-intensive experimental studies. The aim of this study is to explore if it is sufficient to produce a tissue with abundant proteoglycans and/or collagen, or whether reproducing the specific arcade-like collagen network in the implant is essential to develop sufficient load-bearing capacity, using a numerical approach.

Abstract We used our novel assays of cell behavior in tissue equivalents to study the dose-response effects of PDGF-BB on RDF migration and traction in mechanically stressed and stress-free type I collagen and fibrin gels. PDGF-BB increased fibroblast migration significantly in all assays, but the effects on traction depended on the presence of stress and the nature of the ECM. PDGF-BB decreased fibroblast traction in stressed collagen gels, but increased traction in stress-free gels. No statistical conclusion could be inferred for stressed fibrin gels, and increasing PDGF-BB decreased traction in stress-free fibrin gels. These results demonstrate the complex response of fibroblasts to environmental cues, and point to opportunities to orchestrate cell behavior to affect the outcome of wound healing.

The long-term objective of this research is to develop tunable collagen-based biomaterial scaffolds for directed stem cell differentiation into neural lineages to aid in CNS diseases and trauma. Type I collagen is a ubiquitous protein that provides mechanostructural and ligand-induced biochemical cues to cells that attach to the protein via integrin receptors. Previous studies have demonstrated that the mechanical properties of a substrate or tissue can be an important regulator of stem cell differentiation. For example, the mechanical properties polyacrylamide gels can be tuned to induce neural differentiation from stem cells [1, 2]. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured on ployacrylamide gels with low elastic modulus (0.1–1 kPa) resulted in a neural like population. MSCs on 10-fold stiffer matrices that mimic striated muscle elasticity (Emuscle ∼8–17 kPa) lead to spindle-shaped cells similar in shape to myoblasts. Still stiffer gels (25–40 kPa) resulted in osetoblast differentiation. Based on these observations, collagen gels may provide an ideal material for differentiation into neural lineages because of their low compliance.
