Herein, copper nanoparticles were synthesized using electrochemical method at pH 5, 6.5, 9.5 and 12.5 (coded as Cu5, Cu6.5, Cu9.5 and Cu12.5, respectively). Copper was used as electrode whereas 0.15 M oxalic acid in aqueous solution was used as an electrolyte. Effect of pH of the electrolyte solution on the morphological, structural and textural properties of prepared copper nonoparticles was studied. Prepared nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray crystallography, Field emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis and textural analysis. The morphology and sizes of the nanoparticles prepared varied with the initial pH of the solution. Sizes of synthesized Cu particles were found to be in the range of 20 nm to 7 μm. All the particles were mesoporous in nature. Cu5 was found to contain 67% copper hydroxide and 33% copper oxalate whereas Cu6.5, Cu9.5 and Cu12.5 essentially consisted of copper hydroxide.

This article presents an investigation of the machining response of metallurgically and mechanically modified materials at the micro-scale. Tests were conducted that involved micro-milling slots in coarse-grained Cu99.9E with an average grain size of 30 µm and ultrafine-grained Cu99.9E with an average grain size of 200 nm, produced by equal channel angular pressing. A new method based on atomic force microscope measurements is proposed for assessing the effects of material homogeneity changes on the minimum chip thickness required for a robust micro-cutting process with a minimum surface roughness. The investigation has shown that by refining the material microstructure the minimum chip thickness can be reduced and a high surface finish can be obtained. Also, it was concluded that material homogeneity improvements lead to a reduction in surface roughness and surface defects in micro-cutting.

Multilayer graphene was prepared in this study by microwave burst method. Cu9S5/CoS/graphene and CuS/CoS2/graphene composites were obtained by hydrothermal method to regulate the molecular structure and combination of Cu and Co metal sulfides on graphene substrate. Graphite oxide was doped by hydrothermal method, and then Cu9S5/CoS/graphene composite was prepared by microwave explosion method. Raman, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the self-made graphene. Results showed that the multilayer graphene had a bag-like structure which was beneficial to anchor sulfide. Three graphene-based composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy spectrum analysis and electrochemical properties. Moreover, results showed that CuS/CoS2/graphene had the best electrochemical performance, and its specific capacity reached 324 F/g when the current density was 1 A · g–1, which was much higher than that of the other two samples. Capacity retention rate, interfacial charge transfer resistance and electrolyte diffusion resistance also have advantages.

Pure-phase Cu2−xS (x = 1, 0.2) nanoparticles have been synthesized by the thermal decomposition of copper(II) dithiocarbamate as a single-source precursor in oleylamine as a capping agent. The compositions of the Cu2−xS nanocrystals varied from CuS (covellite) through the mixture of phases (CuS and Cu7.2S4) to Cu9S5 (digenite) by simply varying the temperature of synthesis. The crystallinity and morphology of the copper sulfides were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed pure phases at low (120 °C) and high (220 °C) temperatures and a mixture of phases at intermediate temperatures (150 and 180 °C). Covellite was of a spherical morphology, while digenite was rod shaped. The optical properties of these nanocrystals were characterized by UV−vis–NIR and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Both samples had very similar absorption spectra but distinguishable fluorescence properties and exhibited a blue shift in their band gap energies compared to bulk Cu2−xS. The pure phases were used as catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible-light irradiation. The results demonstrated that the photocatalytic activity of the digenite phase exhibited higher catalytic degradation of 98.5% compared to the covellite phase, which showed 88% degradation within the 120 min reaction time using 80 mg of the catalysts. The higher degradation efficiency achieved with the digenite phase was attributed to its higher absorption of the visible light compared to covellite.

AbstractPhase relations along the join bornite (Cu5FeS4)-digenite (Cu8.52Fe0.12S4.88) have been redefined using a combination of in situ high-resolution neutron diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Time-of-flight neutron diffraction patterns were collected on a synthetic sample of bn90 at 16 temperatures between 35 and 350°C. This data is compared with data from a natural end-member bornite sample obtained in an earlier study under identical conditions. Phase relations along the bornite-digenite join are inferred from the temperature evolution of the lattice parameters and the intensity of subcell and supercell reflections of coexisting phases. The DSC scans over the temperature range 50–300°C were performed on a natural digenite sample and samples synthesized at 5 mol.% intervals along the join Cu5FeS4-Cu9S5. The thermal anomalies are correlated with structural phase transitions in componen phases and the solvus temperature for each bulk composition. A phase diagram topology is defined, which was consistent with both diffraction and calorimetric data, but in marked contrast to previous diagrams, shows a consolute point at X = Cu5FeS4 and T = 265°C. This temperature corresponds to that of the tricritical intermediate-high transition in bornite. Isothermal annealing experiments carried out on synthetic starting materials for up to 7 months showed coarsening behaviour consistent with the revised phase diagram topology.

The performances, qualities and extraordinary development potential of the friction stir welding process (FSW) are well known in the world, both in the scientific and industrial areas. The innovative technical developments, based on the principle of the FSW process, conducted at ISIM Timisoara, as well as the results obtained so far have put the foundation for initiating a new method for bonding of materials, namely friction stir soldering. The principle of the new soldering process is based on important features of the FSW process. The paper presents the results of a program of experiments, which had as its main objective checking whether the new proposed soldering process is viable and applicable. Positive results were obtained by the soldering tests of copper (Cu99), brass (CuZn39Pb2) and steel (S235). Promoting this new environmentally friendly process of soldering is beneficial, because it complies with the current trends worldwide regarding both the environment and health.

Abstract Sulphidogenous microorganism communities were isolated from soil polluted by crude oil. The study was focused on determining the influence of 1) copper (II) concentration on the activity of selected microorganism communities and 2) the applied electron donor on the course and evolution of mineral-forming processes under conditions favouring growth of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The influence of copper concentration on the activity of selected microorganism communities and the type of mineral phases formed was determined during experiments in which copper (II) chloride at concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.7 g/L was added to SRB cultures. The experiments were performed in two variants: with ethanol (4 g/L) or lactate (4 g/L) as the sole carbon source. In order to determine the taxonomic composition of the selected microorganism communities, the 16S rRNA method was used. Results of this analysis confirmed the presence of Desulfovibrio, Desulfohalobium, Desulfotalea, Thermotoga, Solibacter, Gramella, Anaeromyxobacter and Myxococcus sp. in the stationary cultures. The post-culture sediments contained covelline (CuS) and digenite (Cu9S5 ). Based on the results, it can be stated that the type of carbon source applied during incubation plays a crucial role in determining the mineral composition of the post-culture sediments. Thus, regardless of the amount of copper ion introduced to a culture with lactate as the sole carbon source, no copper sulphide was observed in the post-culture sediments. Cultures with ethanol as the sole carbon source, on the other hand, yielded covelline or digenite in all post-culture sediments.

AbstractIntermediate compositions along the bornite–digenite join exsolve during quenching from above-solvus temperatures. This involves vacancy clustering and cation ordering processes, and is facilitated by fast cation diffusion rates in the presence of a large (10–25%) metal vacancy population. Samples of six different compositions across the bornite–Cu9S5 join, synthesised from component elements in sealed quartz capsules, were water-quenched from 600°C and analysed using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (HRPD). Time-of-flight spectra measured at room temperature showed all intermediate compositions had exsolved into mixtures of bornite and low digenite with a 5.0a superstructure. No evidence for the presence of any other phase was found. Variations in the lattice parameters of the exsolved bornite phase were observed for different bulk compositions across the join, and ascribed to variations in the degree of order. Bornite exsolved from digenite-rich compositions may not be fully ordered due to the much lower solvus temperatures at the Cu-rich end of the solid solution. As only slight differences were observed between the diffraction patterns of a visibly exsolved and a rapidly quenched sample of the same bulk composition, the formation of optically-visible exsolution lamellae on {100} is ascribed to a process of coalescence of sub-microscopic domains initially formed during the quenching process. The rapid kinetics of exsolution at geologically low temperatures, explains the lack of authenticated natural occurrences of intermediate compositions in the solid solution in nature, and the limited degree of stoichiometric variation observed in end-members.
