This study critically analyzes Critical Buddhism (hihan bukkyo ; hereafter: CB) as a philosophical and a religious movement; it investigates the specific basis of CB, particularly the philosophical categories of critica and topica, vis-a-vis contemporary theories of knowledge and ethics, in order to re-situate CB within modern Japanese and Buddhist thought as well as in relation to current trends in contemporary Western thought.
This study is made up of seven chapters, including the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction provides the religious and philosophical context as well as the motivations and intentions of the study. Chapter 2 with the title "Eye of the Storm: Historical and Political Context" is largely explanatory. After a brief analysis of violence, warfare and social discrimination within Buddhism and specifically Japanese traditions, some important background to the context in which Critical Buddhism arose is recalled. In addition, the development of so-called Imperial Way Zen (kodozen )---which represents in many respects the culmination of the 'false' Buddhism the Critical Buddhists attack---is examined. The following chapter on the roots of topica analyses a number of the larger epistemological and ethical issues raised by CB, in an attempt to reinterpret both 'criticalism' and 'topicalism' with reference to four key motifs in Zen tradition: experience (jikishi-ninshin: "directly pointing to the human mind [in order to realize the Buddha-nature]" [B.]); tradition (kyoge-betsuden: "an independent transmission apart from written scriptures" [M. 6, 28]); language (furyu-moji or furyu-monji: "not relying on words and letters" [M. 6]); and enlightenment (kensho jobutsu: "awakening to one's original Nature [and thus becoming a Buddha]" [Dan. 29]). Here and in Chapter 4, on "New Buddhisms: Problems in Modern Zen Thought," the CB argument against the many sources of topical thinking is outlined, paying particular attention to question of 'pure experience' (junsui keiken) developed by Nishida Kitaro and the Kyoto School. Chapter 5 on "Criticism as Anamnesis: Dempo/Dampo" develops the positive side of the CB case, i.e., a truly 'critical' Buddhism, with respect to the place of historical consciousness and the weight of tradition. Chapter 6, "Radical Contingency and Compassion," develops the theme of radical contingency, based on the core Buddhist doctrine of pratitya-samutpada (Jp. engi) as the basis for an effective Critical Buddhist epistemological and ethical strategy. The conclusion elaborates a paradigm for comparative scholarship that integrates the insights of Western philosophical hermeneutics, pragmatism, CB, and so-called 'Buddhist theology'. The implications of the Critical Buddhist project on the traditional understanding of the relation between scholarship and religion are examined, and also the reconnection of religious consciousness to social conscience, which CB believes to be the genius of Buddhism and which makes of CB both an unfinished project and an ongoing challenge.

Annotation:
This dissertation attempts to critically analyse the effect of ideology on the text of Amos 5 and how this impacts on hermeneutics. It begins with a look at the historical-political-sociological situations of Amos’ time. It also looks at ideology and the text and the effect of ideology both on the writer and the interpreter. Chapter 3 and 4 are exegetical and rhetorical readings of the texts of Amos 5. Chapter 4 focuses on the concept of justice and righteousness in Amos 5 and also in the entire book of Amos. Lastly, Chapter 5 looks at the concept of justice and righteousness and its contemporary relevance. In course of the study, it was discovered that time and experience play an important role in the Bible experience. Further, it was discovered that both the writer and the interpreter are considerably under the influence of ideology. None is exempt from it. This study therefore is about the struggles that a modern interpreter encounter in course of doing biblical interpretation and application. Since the texts is an ancient and was written at a time different from now. It implies therefore that contemporary interpreter has to interpret the text honestly in other for biblical message to be relevant to the present.

ABSTRACT There has been a renewed interest in the inclusion of ethics as part of educators' training and interest in understanding the moral and ethical dimensions of educational practice. This research was designed to study the types of dilemmas school level leaders face, the characteristics of typical dilemmas, and the implications for leader preparation, professional development, and practice. In documenting the lived experiences of former school level leaders, the grounded theory approach to qualitative inquiry and the critical incident technique (CIT) were employed. Data collected from interview sessions, dialogs, journals and reflections were used to analyze the types of dilemmas school level leaders faced, the characteristics of typical dilemmas, and the implications for leader preparation, professional development, and practice. This study confirmed the prevalence of ethical dilemmas for school level leadership. The critical incidents shared by the participants revealed that school leaders were guided by district policies and experienced dissonance or tension between their guiding ethical beliefs and policies or expectations of the district. The data determined that school level leaders sought to act in the best interests of students. Participants acknowledged that the core of their ethical and moral fiber was developed early in their youth and was reinforced by pivotal life experiences. This acknowledgement suggested that pivotal life experiences could influence an individual's ethical and moral fiber. The findings also indicated that professional development in ethics could be effective for school level leaders. Additionally, the data revealed a dichotomy around whether ethics could be taught. The findings were inconclusive in determining how race and/or gender played a significant role in the dilemmas that school level leaders face or the resolution of the dilemmas. Further research and study of this issue may be warranted in light of the changing demographics of our schools, communities, and school level leaders. Critical reflection proved to be a process that could benefit practicing and aspiring school level leaders. Exploring how this process could be implemented in school leader preparation and professional development programs is a phenomenon worthy of further research.

The legislation governing the care of people with dementia is based on consent and therefore reflects the western society’s idealization of autonomy. However, common symptoms of dementia include decreased ability to make adequate decisions and an impaired judgement. The purpose of this study was to understand the rationality in organizing the care of people with dementia without the presence of coercion, based on experience of nursing staff working in dementia care. How does the nursing staff reason about the use of coercion in the care of people with dementia? How do they relate to current legislation? To answer these questions three focus group interviews were made, consisting of nursing staff working at special units for people with dementia. The study was based on a critical hermeneutic perspective where ruling norms, values and beliefs were questioned. The result showed that the nursing staff considered use of coercion as an inevitable part of their work to ensure safety for people with dementia. Additionally, the result showed that the nursing staff used various strategies to work in a way that was compatible with the current legislation, although these strategies often failed to be sufficient enough to ensure the protection of people with dementia. Based on the result, this study discusses the conflict occurring between the discourses on autonomy in the society in relation to organizing a safe dementia care

This thesis investigates if privatization of the Swedish healthcare system influences our view on the meaning of equality. This system is based on the principle that all people are equals and that healthcare should be provided on the basis of need. I apply critical ideology analysis to investigate how our view of equality might change because of the evolvement of society. A critical view may be explained as an interest in exploring things that seem obvious to many. Important questions to answer are why equality is regarded as such a natural concept in the society and how healthcare is actually provided. I analyze government documents, such as debates and inquiries about privatization and identify a complexity regarding the conception of equality and its relation to ideas of freedom and justice.

Annotation:
The study of ideology has long interested sociologists and consumer researchers alike. Much consumption research has approached ideology from various macro, meso, and micro levels of analysis. However, many studies fail to address the dialogical interplay among these three levels of analysis when examining how ideology manifests in, and interacts with, consumer identity projects. Many consumption-based studies examining ideology provide descriptive and normative accounts, affording practices of consumption emancipatory potential. In response, this research adopts a critical marketing perspective in order to draw out the macro and political implications of meso cultural production systems and micro consumption experiences and identity projects. Focusing on the contemporary American feminist movement, and on discourses around sex and sexuality, it explores how hegemonic (patriarchal) and counterhegemonic (feminist) ideologies are communicated in the marketplace, through the media, to understand their role in regard to consumers’ lived experiences and interactions with advertisements. Working within the consumer culture theory tradition, this thesis employed a variant of phenomenological interviewing that explored female emerging adults’ sexual narratives and their interpretations of sexualized ads. By generating data on a specific type of experience, inferences were drawn about how young women experience and relate to the contemporary feminist movement. In total, 14 American women, aged 20 to 31, were interviewed twice and also created media collages of what they considered ‘sexy’. Implementing a multi-step hermeneutic analysis, the data were analyzed through an iterative process, moving back and forth between the idiographic cases and theory. Through multiple iterations, micro, meso, and macro level inferences were made. This study suggests that young women foster diverse and temporary identifications with feminism in the pursuit of two, often overlapping, goals: ontological security and status. This results in a micro process of ‘ideological shifting’, which has depoliticizing effects, insofar as (anti-) feminist brands and identities were readily appropriated and discarded depending on specific contexts and situations. Thus, contrary to much work in the consumer culture theory tradition, which presents consumption as having transgressive and liberating effects, this study finds that while the young women had the power to dialogically interact with marketized (meso level) ideologies that constitute the marketplace, they failed to intercept the macro level processes of marketization and commodification and consequently did not challenge the hegemonic (patriarchal) ideology at large. In adopting a critical perspective, this study offers valuable insight into the relationship between ideology and consumer behavior. Ideology is shown to be disseminated via hegemonic processes of commodification and marketization. Because these processes occur at a macro level, counterhegemonic ideologies are hegemonized and subsequently depoliticized before even reaching the consumer on a micro level. By examining ideology across all three levels, this study finds that consumer agency is largely relegated to the realm of the marketplace, where consumers’ dialogical interactions and consumption practices do not challenge the macro ideologies or oppression at large, but merely alter their marketplace expressions.

The aim of this study was to explore the nature of frontline nurses’ experiences of living with rapid and continuous organizational change in a tertiary health care institution. The phenomenon under study was organizational change. A component of this research was also to explore the possibility of change fatigue in nurses’ discourse. Change is inevitable, and increasingly rapid and continuous in health care as organizations strive to adapt, improve and innovate in response to external pressures. These pressures challenge hospitals to strive for patient safety, quality assurance and provision of exceptional family centred care. Attending to these pressures require time, energy and money. Rapid and continuous change creates a push/pull relationship between innovation and budget. New technologies require extra resources however, simultaneous restructuring and optimization efforts see hospitals decreasing available resources. This creates a challenging workplace for nurses who must engage in organizational change activities with limited resources. Organizational change challenges health care providers in a variety of ways because it restructures how and when patient care delivery is provided, changing ways in which nurses must carry out their work. Little research has been done regarding the impact of rapid and continuous organizational change for frontline health care providers, most notably, nurses. In this study a critical hermeneutic design was applied. Guided by the theoretical framework of critical management studies, the researcher explored concepts of organizational change, experience of change, change fatigue, and power and voice. The setting was an urban pediatric teaching hospital located in eastern Ontario. The researcher sought breadth, depth, complexity and richness of data in understanding the experience of organizational change, which supported a decision to seek a sample size of ten to fifteen participants. Thick description commenced at fourteen participants. Face to face interviews were conducted using open-ended questions to understand nurses’ experiences of change. Brown and Gilligan’s Voice-centred relational method of data analysis was used – a multi-levelled analysis exploring the concept of voice in relation to self, other, culture, society and history. Rapid and continuous organizational change in the workplace profoundly impacted nurses’ work, their relationships to the self, other, culture, society and history. Nurses recognized that many change initiatives reflected an ideological shift in health care that supported a culture of service, whilst sacrificing a culture of care. A culture of service prioritized cost-savings and efficiency, which saw nurses lose the time and resources required to provide quality, safe care. Nurses felt morally responsible to uphold a culture of care, which proved challenging, and at times unobtainable. The inability to provide quality, safe care resulted in a multitude of negative emotional repercussions, which fostered moral distress. Nurses exhibited elements of change fatigue, further contributing to feelings of voicelessness and powerlessness within their workplace. Organizational change must be re-conceptualized in ways that ensure change initiatives uphold institutional integrity and better support the provision of morally authentic nursing practice. Health care organizations should place nurses at the forefront of planning, implementation and evaluation of change initiatives in order to alleviate the many negative experiences of organizational change noted in this study.

Soon after Yoweri Museveni's military seizure of power in Uganda in 1986, an insurgency war broke out in the north-eastern region of Teso. After six years of fighting a resolution was mediated by a number of agents drawn partly from the Museveni government and partly from local, indigenous resources in Teso. Today, despite lingering resentment against Museveni, the Teso insurgency is one of the few rare cases in Africa were a conflict was resolved by peaceful means. Taking a lead from Vivienne Jabri's Discourses on Violence the thesis seeks to situate the emergence and support of the Teso insurgency within the discourse that prevailed in the region at the time. The fighting was enabled by an interpretation of the Museveni government as being hostile to the people of Teso, yet it was also facilitated by a prevailing culture of violence. Understanding what causes an insurgency provides valuable insights into understanding what causes peace. The thesis therefore seeks to situate the emergence and support for peace in discourse. It discusses the different governmental and non-governmental agents that played a role in transforming the 'conflict discourse' into a 'peace discourse'. Reflecting back on the past of the insurgency and looking forward to the future, the thesis places the process of reconciliation in Teso between past and future. The link between past, present and future is also subject to 'hermeneutics'. Hermeneutics signifies the way understanding is accomplished between, for instance, two parties to a conflict. It argues that the reflecting back to the past is conditioned by a particular anticipation of the future, and vice versa. Although providing a valuable framework to analyse the transition from conflict to peace, hermeneutics is problematic in the way it confornts the problem of authenticity, and it also fails to account for power asymmetries which determine the process of understanding. This thesis suggests expanding it to 'critical hermeneutics' as a way of responding to the issues.

This thesis discusses the prohibition of human cloning in contemporary Islamic legal discourse, which relies on two distinct doctrines: the first seeks support in the Qur'anic text, while the second depends on method of utilitarian legal hermeneutics (al-istiṣlaḥ ). These doctrines are examined by comparing them to the method that contemporary Islamic legal discourse adopts, namely, uṣul al-fiqh. When this is done, a discrepancy emerges in the first doctrine that traces this prohibition back to the text of revelation, which in turn requires further clarification of the foundations of hermeneutics in uṣul al-fiqh---identified here as textual and legislative consistency. For this, Shaṭibi's theory of maqaṣid al-sharī'ah offers one of the most reliable bases for the hermeneutics to evaluate the second doctrine. The methodological venture in this thesis aims at criticizing the current methodology while at the same time offering a justified approach to hermeneutics in contemporary Islamic legal discourse and in the case of human cloning.

In the Sixties took place a famous debate setting against each other hermeneutics, represented byGadamer, and Critical theory, represented by Habermas. It embodied a deep-seated antagonismbetween « hermeneutical conscience » and « critical conscience » (P. Ricoeur). However, its historyshows that Critical theory’s decision to merge within history, conceived as crisis, and its refusal of« traditional science » lead it to establish complex connections with the hermeneutical trend. ThusAdorno sets up « interpretation » as a paradigm for philosophical thinking. Because he is concernedwith giving Critical theory its philosophical foundation, Habermas breaks with this paradigm, followinginstead the path of reconstruction. This turn undermines the initial conception of Critical theory; andone might ask - as does A. Honneth - if it does not weaken its ability to detect social dominationphenomena. In order to remedy to the critical shortcomings of habermasian theory, Honneth worksout a social philosophy which is less concerned about the question of philosophical foundation andmore open to the hermeneutical motives. This questioning opens the way for a new reading of Adorno’s philosophy, focused on the criticalachievements of « allegorical hermeneutics »

All across the world, people struggle daily to create and enhance their sense of identity. Such struggles are waged in many ways, including through the process of rediscovering and reinterpreting history. Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, an African American congregation in a suburb of Atlanta, is engaged in a search for its church cemetery, lost when the land was sold to the military during the nation’s mobilization for World War II. The church’s efforts are analyzed in the context of identity creation -- a search for links to a mythic and self-sufficient past. Archaeological methods reveal compelling evidence that the cemetery lies in a location previously unknown to the community. Through a collaborative process, the church community and the investigator identify the possible cemetery location and develop plans to institute reforms that are sustainable and agreeable to all parties.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is a conceptual analysis of “institutional culture” in higher education, especially because the concept has become a buzzword in higher education discourse in South Africa. The aim is to develop an understanding of the concept, and more specifically, to explore how institutional culture is organised, constructed and articulated in the institutional documents of Stellenbosch University (SU) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC). These analyses are preceded by an analysis of higher education policy documents. I employ critical hermeneutics as research methodology to construct constitutive meanings of “institutional culture”. Since it is difficult to work with a large set of constitutive meanings, I narrowed the list down to the four most frequently recurring meanings, namely: shared values and beliefs; language; symbols; and knowledge production. These constitutive meanings form the theoretical framework which is used to analyse institutional documents. My findings suggest that all the constitutive meanings of my theoretical framework are addressed in the institutional documents of both SU and UWC, which means that the institutional documents conform to my theoretical framework. SU has, in my opinion, an excellent and comprehensive base of well-prepared and compiled institutional documents. However, most of these documents seem to relate to quality and compliance to national policy requirements, with no significant actions or strategies to address the challenges related to transforming the University’s institutional culture. Even though SU has shown commendable strategic initiatives to transform its institutional culture, there has not been sufficient engagement with the challenges of transformation. Similarly, for UWC, it is my contention that even though UWC is committed to transformation and nurturing a culture of change in order to make meaning of and address the complex challenges of the world, there needs to be more rigorous engagement in shaping and managing strategic direction and planning to ensure an institutional culture to accommodate change. Even though the institutional documents analysed mostly conform to the constitutive meanings of the theoretical framework, what of concern is the lack of an adequate articulation of the concept “institutional culture”. If there is no articulation, it follows that there is an inadequate understanding of the concept. A deeper understanding is crucial if the important link between transformation and “institutional culture” is to be realised. I contend that there exists a disjunction between “institutional culture” and transformation policies. One of the reasons for this disjunction is an impoverished understanding among higher education policy practitioners of the concept “institutional culture”, which creates an impression of compliance with national policy requirements.

The main focus of this dissertation is a critical study of the Arabic text, titled: Lubāb al ‘Ilm Fī Sūrah al-Najm (The Kernel of Knowledge in the Chapter of the Star) by Shaykh Ahmad bin Muṣṭafā’ al-‘Alāwī. Due to the lack of research on esoteric commentaries of the Qurʾān in the English language, there is a need to embark upon an in-depth study of such texts. An important work on Shaykh al-‘Alāwī in English is Martin Lings’ A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century. This book is an excellent introduction to the life, works and thought of Shaykh al-‘Alāwī, but it does not deal with a specific text in any detail. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to examine closely the above-mentioned text of Shaykh al-‘Alāwī as a sample of his esoteric interpretation of the Qurʾān. For the purpose of this thesis, I shall undertake a translation of his exegesis (tafsīr) on Sūrah al-Najm (the Chapter of the Star). I will include with it explanatory notes and identification of key quotations and sources. This sample from Shaykh al-‘Alāwī’s work will form the basis of my critical analyses. It will also provide a means for comparison with some of his other works, and with Qurʾānic commentaries of the same genre by other Sufi scholars, both classical and modern. In this dissertation, I also seek to offer some answers and proofs concerning the validity of the existence of esoteric tafsīr and why it is needed. I will do this by examining key verses in the Qur’ān and the Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet Muḥammad). The distinction between esoteric and exoteric interpretations of the Qurʾān will also be dealt with in this dissertation. Although the emphasis will be on the esoteric dimension, neither the esoteric nor the exoteric dimension will be treated in a mutually exclusive way. Most Arabic commentaries on the Qurʾān tend towards the exoteric and literal meanings of the text, but the exoteric form also has an inner dimension which Shaykh al-‘Alāwī demonstrates in his commentary on Sūrah al-Najm.

This thesis aims to explore the different aspects of the phenomenon of migration in Greece, as a case study. The choice of country is motivated by its geographical position at Europe’s external borders. In order to gain an insight into the reality that migrants are faced with when searching for a better life in Europe, a field study was conducted in Athens, Greece during a period of six weeks in the spring of 2010. The field work included interviews with various actors and individuals that are directly involved in migration issues, informal discussions with migrants and personal observations. Additionally, secondary sources such as previous studies were used. The framework used to approach the material included elements from neo-institutionalism, hermeneutics as well as critical theory.

The most important conclusions reached incorporate that the rights of migrants are not respected in any aspect of the societal sphere, or in other words the three institutional pillars, the regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive. As a result, there are double standards applied to Europeans respective migrants. As a possible cause of the problematic situation described, underlying perceptions of national identity versus "otherness" are identified. These perceptions derive from a deeply rooted acceptance of social constructions such as national borders, as undisputable facts.

This thesis argues, contrary to Gilles Deleuze’s critique of method and disavowal of textuality, that there is a re-constructive textual method at work in Deleuze’s 1968 treatise Différence et répétition. It is a method not for interpretation, representation, or deconstruction but for prolonging and reactivating historical and contemporary texts into the present and for the future. It is demonstrated how Deleuze’s method synthesises temporally and thematically heterogeneous texts and make them resonate with each other. The analysis is conducted, first, through a notion of telling stories as a complementary device to Deleuze’s definition of philosophy as the creation of concepts. Second, by showing how Deleuze – instead of offering solutions – connects, develops, and repeats problems from which the new is drawn. Third, by discussing his positive and re-constructive concept of critique and by arguing that his use of free indirect discourse should be understood as a metaphysical and political tool. Finally, by claiming that Deleuze’s concept of multiplicity can be viewed as a synthetic and methodological device that brings a heterogeneous given together. In concluding, it is proposed that Deleuze draws on tools and technics developed in literature and mathematics, specifically differential calculus and geometry, to develop methods for philosophy. Studying Deleuze’s method in Différence et répétition not only offers a prism for throwing new light on Deleuze’s philosophy through his understudied methodology, but also contributes to the development of innovative philosophically inspired methods for re-constructing the present. In addition, this study shows that while Deleuze pushed continental philosophy beyond its hermeneutic, structuralist, and existentialist heritage, he also contributed to the development of novel methodologies. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims at recording, evaluating and analysing sermons of the lay preachers in the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian Nkhoma Synod in Central Malawi. Basically, these preachers have an oral culture. This analysis reveals the inherent ability of the oral lay preachers to communicate effectively using their indigenous knowledge system and modes of communication which are characteristic of an oral culture. Secondly, the analysis also reveals some lack in these sermons in terms of biblical understanding. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to develop a homiletical theory and praxis which will regard the biblical text and the people’s context - Word and world – as serious. Finally, the research proves that, if the strategy of implementing a training process in the congregations for all lay preachers, in order to empower them to use both their traditional modes of communication and an understanding of the Bible, could be realised, the spirituality of the people would improve and Christianity would have a greater impact in the society. To achieve the foregoing, we use Osmer’s practical theological interpretation methodology and the Heidelberg method of sermon analysis. Chapter two provides a general overview and description of the historical context, and cultural worldview of the people. The contextual challenges that affect the Church and the phenomenon of oral lay preacher are also described. In Chapter three, we analyse lay preachers’ sermons using the Heidelberg method of sermon analysis which has a strong Reformed foundation. The rhetorical strategy of using stories, retelling, parables, myths, fables and other strategies are exemplified. The critical evaluation of the context and detailed analysis of the sermons are done as we try to answer the question: “What is going on?” Chapter four uses the findings of the analysis and begins to develop the homiletical theory, theology and praxis of the oral lay preaching context. In so doing we explain why the oral culture understands, arranges and communicates indigenous knowledge in preaching. We also ask why the lay preachers preach the way they do and react to this question: “Why is this going on?” In Chapter five we develop an oral hermeneutics within the lay preaching context of the Malawian Church (CCAP); the art of doing theology in context is demonstrated using several examples of sermons. The Process of Reading and Re-reading of Texts as a means of interpretation is suggested. Furthermore, in this section, we respond to the question, “What ought to be going on?” And finally in chapter six, we make recommendations and suggestions for the implementation of lay leadership development using a model of the indigenous knowledge system found in the context. A strategy of training pastors who in turn will train local preachers is exemplified. Finally, we answer the question, “How may we respond?” The researcher believes that through this study many lay leaders will be trained in the CCAP Nkhoma synod and that there will be transformation in people’s lives.

Paul Ricœur’s work excels both in depth and breadth. His philosophy, which touches upon virtually all major themes in European intellectual life, makes use of existential, phenomenological, hermeneutical, ethical, moral and political analysis. Although the secondary literature on Ricœur is huge and continues to grow rapidly, the social aspect of his thought requires considerably more discussion. By offering a sustained engagement with Ricœur’s ideas, the purpose of this dissertation is to develop a comprehensive critical reconstruction of his social thought. His account of intersubjectivity, his analysis of the significance of mutual reciprocity in the dialectics of selfhood and otherness, his critical argumentative scheme of political paradox, and his interest for the very question of institutions, justice and of recognition, testify the authenticity and the limits of an engaged philosophical reflection concerned with the complexities of social life, with how people collectively think about it, behave in, and make sense of social situations. With regard to the large amount of secondary literature written about Ricœur’s philosophy, this dissertation aims at adequately reconstruct his social thought through different inheritances that have a significant influence on his philosophical project, namely, the phenomenological (e.g., E. Husserl, A. Schutz), the hermeneutical (e.g. W. Dilthey, H.-G. Gadamer), the sociological (e.g. L. Boltanski, L. Thévenot, M. Weber), the ethical (e.g. Aristotle, Kant), and the political legacy (e.g. J. Rawls, M. Walzer). The present work is not limited to the analysis of the topics of his later philosophical enterprise. It makes also reference to his earliest writings on Husserl’s phenomenology, emphasizing the fact that these provide highly significant elements and instructive interpretative keys with which to assess his broader social thought. Moreover, this dissertation looks at some of Ricœur’s ethical and political writing concerning the relationship between Christian faith and social criticism published in the journals Esprit and Christianisme Social. Certainly, Ricœur’s social thought is a long journey marked by significant detours, which need to be critically considered. The internal preoccupation, concerned with the thematic unity of Ricœur’s social thought, will be always dynamically accompanied by an external preoccupation, focused on the place occupied by the French author’s social approach among the different currents of social philosophy and the social sciences. Which are, then, the unique features of Ricœur’s social thought?

Annotation:
My involvement with mathematics education amongst township educators and learners over the past seven years has highlighted the absence of sustained meaning and meaning making of mathematical concepts. It appears though that this instrumental rather than relational understanding of FET mathematics is not unique to township learners but is encountered amongst learners of all socio-economic classes and is representative of many FET mathematics learners. Given that the language of learning and teaching is a major contributory factor in the South African education system, it appears that the language of mathematics itself is a greater exacerbating factor for many learners of mathematics. The exclusive algorithmic approach to classroom mathematics further seems to alienate many learners from the essence of the meaning of mathematical tasks. This research undertakes to determine whether metateaching and metalearning as forerunners to metacognition facilitates the acquisition of the sustained meaning of mathematical concepts. Metateaching and metalearning refer to the acute and deliberate awareness by educator and learner as to what constitutes concepts. Teaching and learning therefore presupposes the deconstruction of concepts into its subsumed derivative roots. It also assumes an awareness of the tacit degrees of abstraction that characterise tasks and the content of tasks. This in turn has implications for the educator's adopted sequence of topics for instruction. Metacognition implies awareness on the part of the learner (and educator) as to how material is learned and a further awareness as to how that learning can be sustained. Whether we ascribe meaningful learning to radical or social constructivism, or to associationist didactive approaches, or a combination of these, we are making assumptions about how learners acquire and sustain mathematical meaning because mathematics is, by and large a symbolic language often devoid of affective connotation. Furthermore our assessments of learners' tasks amount to clinical corrections of austere formulae wrapped in algorithmic procedures which manifest nothing of a learner's experience of mathematics or the deeper understanding (or misunderstandings) which characterise a learning and/or assessment episode. To this end the research design of this interpretive case study requires learners to expound in textual accounts their thoughts as they describe the evolution of a mathematical process as they approach a solution and eventually interpret it. The textual account exposes the concept definition for what it really is in a learner's understanding of it and it is the expressiveness of language that indicates whether the understanding of a learner is approaching the concept image. The textual accounts vary in richness in terms of mathematical register and this in turn reflects the conceptual depth. The mechanism which seems to promote the conversion from concept definition to concept image is the graphical representation of the mathematical task or procedure, possibly because of its greater concreteness as opposed to the abstraction of its algebraic form.

Bearing in mind technology has played a very important role in contemporary debates about education due to its rapid and multiple effects in network society (Castells, 2006), this research assumes literacies as absolutely central to learning. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how university students, familiar with the Internet, majoring in various courses, from private and public universities, construct meanings, from and with their historical contexts, in relation to different forms of social practices along with the kind of epistemology embedded with them. In order to carry out this investigation, a site was built in which the participants of this research, hyperreaders, interacted with each other through choosing to discuss issues from an array of modalities including images, video games, animated jokes, email contents, films, music, urban legends, current news from other media. This dissertation draws on contemporary notions of literacies, mainly critical literacy, as a social practice. From this perspective, it is assumed that the construction of epistemology, reality and authorship are always contextualized, multiple, questionable and subject to transformations, according to Cope, Kalantzis, 2000; Gee, 2004; Lankshear, Knobel, 2005; Muspratt, Luke, Freebody, 1997. The study connects critical literacy, critical hermeneutics (Ricoeur, 1978) and deconstruction (Derrida 1997). The conclusion reveals that the Internet represents a propitious space for knowledge construction and it suggests, as in the title Literacies in the digital society: navigating is and is not precise, that both certainty and uncertainty coexist in the process of navigation through the participants´ meaning making in which conventional and more critical views are intertwined.

This thesis explores the transformative potential of theological categories within Western Christianity. In particular, this thesis explores the categories of memory, narrative and solidarity and their relationship to the broader categories of history; language; and community. The relationships between these categories are engaged by way of critically comparing and contrasting the political theology of Johannes Baptist Metz and the feminist theological hermeneutics of Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza. This thesis traces the roots of these categories from the political theology of Johannes Baptist Metz and critically explores how the feminist theological hermeneutics of Schussler Fiorenza both uses and develops them. This exploration reveals the debt feminist theologies owe to political theology for the critical and emancipatory articulation of memory, narrative and solidarity. It also reveals important connections between memory, narrative and solidarity and the broader categories of history, language and community. Accordingly, this thesis explores the implications of a feminist engagement with the relationships between: history and memory; language and narrative; community and solidarity. By way of an intensification of the particular a critical feminist perspective more clearly extends the theological potential of these relationships and so illuminates their importance in a vitally -- and even radically -- new way. In the work of Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza this extension is most clearly expressed through her critique of the kyriarchal socio-religious structures of Western culture and society which she grounds by way of a particular focus the church as the ekklesia of women. Accordingly, this thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One positions feminist theologies within the broader tradition of Western culture and society. Chapter Two briefly traces the historical, philosophical and theological heritage of political and feminist theologies as theologies of social critique. Chapter Three examines the contemporary historical consciousness of Western society and deals with the concerns feminist theologies have with Western history. In understanding history as both the liberative and oppressive story of human agency this chapter explores the use of memory as a tool for the emancipation of Christian history. In Chapter Four we look at the formative power of language as the medium through which humanity understands existence and reality. By way of a feminist critique, this chapter explores how language can operate to both facilitate and inhibit the liberative stories of the Christian tradition. Chapter Five examines the basic vision and structure of community. Here, the conditions that help foster women's solidarity and contribute to the nurturing of authentic relationships and vital Christian communities are explored. Chapter Six reviews Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza's contribution to the transformative potential of the theological categories of memory, narrative and solidarity and offers two general critiques for further discussion. Chapter Six then concludes this thesis by engaging both Metz and Schussler Fiorenza in a critical-rhetorical reading of their work.

Magister Theologiae - MTh
This thesis is based on the recognition that there are similarities and differences between two notions of Christian ministry, that is, a “discipleship of equals” as defined by Elizabeth Schüssler Fiorenza (1989) and a “partnership of both men and women” as defined by Mercy Amba Oduyoye (1990). In this thesis, Christian ministry is assessed through the perspectives of both feminist theology and African women’s theology. The question which is addressed here is how the similarities and differences between Elizabeth Schüssler Fiorenza’s notion of Christian ministry as a “discipleship of equals” and Mercy Amba Oduyoye’s notion of Christian ministry as a “partnership of both men and women” should be understood and assessed. The main purpose of this thesis is to offer a critical comparison of these two female theologians so as to encourage new visions of Christian ministry in the contemporary church and society. To accomplish this task, a literature survey of books, essays, and articles published on the subject of Christian ministry in feminist and African women’s theology by African and Western theologians, between 1960 and 2003, was conducted. Two notions of how Christian ministry should be understood are offered. Fiorenza emphasizes that both women and men need to be recognized as disciples of Christ who can equally, yet within diversity, minister to God’s people by virtue of their baptisms. Oduyoye notes that reciprocity and mutuality is crucial for both men and women who minister to God’s people by forming strong partnerships through their respective vocations and ministries, by virtue of their baptisms. This thesis argues that a comparison of the views of Elizabeth Schüssler Fiorenza and Mercy Amba Oduyoye on Christian ministry reveals similarities based on a shared experience of being women within a male-dominated Christian church and differences emanating from the different contexts within which they practice theology, namely, that of Euro-American feminist theology and that of African women’s theology. It is argued that there are significant differences between feminist theology and African women’s theology, with reference to their context, rhetoric, experiences and modes of expression. A critical assessment of Oduyoye’s notion of Christian ministry as a “partnership of both men and women” reveals that there is an internal problem within African theology. The predicament within which African women theologians find themselves is that they have to struggle not only against patriarchy in church and society but also against the remaining distortions within what is deemed to be a more progressive theology. African women theologians acknowledge their solidarity with African theologians but also identify fundamental flaws within African theology. African women theologians are therefore engaged in a battle on more than one side. They need to unmask and support at the same time. On the other hand, it is clear that Fiorenza is far less critical of the feminist movement, from which she derives the term “feminist hermeneutics”. She is, of course, quite aware of the various and successive strands of the feminist movement, but she remains at least sympathetic to this movement and seeks to explore its significance for biblical scholarship and especially the Roman Catholic Church, of which she is a member. She recognises the need to complement the (sometimes reductionist) secular manifestations of feminism by highlighting the oppressive but also the potentially liberative role which religious traditions may still have in a secularised civil society. One may therefore conclude that African women’s theology remains distinct from other feminist theologies. In a similar way, African-American womanist theologians have insisted that their situation is distinct from that of Euro-American women in what is described as the “triple” oppression of black women: being women, relatively poor, black and formerly enslaved. This calls for further reflection on the similarities and differences between African-American womanist theology and African women’s theology. Important differences which come to mind here are the legacy of slavery, differences in economic status, and military power. African women are often engaged in a struggle to secure a sustainable livelihood in ways that African-American women are not. More importantly, the relationship between American black theology and womanist theology deserves further attention in this regard.

This thesis argues that any historiography that would contribute to theological knowledge must take into consideration, at a methodological level, the reality of God. This theological claim, in turn, has significant implications for historical knowledge and thus, historiography. The thesis moves ahead in five chapters. The first is an overview and description of N. T. Wright's historical and theological method as they both are grounded in his critical realist epistemology. The second chapter argues for a particular theological epistemology that goes beyond Wright's and corrects it, drawing primarily on the work of T. F. Torrance and Søren Kierkegaard. In the third and fourth chapters an ‘apocalyptic' theological approach is defined and articulated according to a progression from soteriology to Christology to creation. The final chapter builds upon this constructive theological work by articulating an ‘apocalyptic' theology of history which is then used to articulate some key considerations for a theological approach to historiography in critical dialogue with Wright's historical and theological method.

The Cooperative Movement, as a product of modernity, arises in a historical moment whose denied the values of solidarity, focusing on the theory of an individual who, guided only the pursuit of their interests, should have their absolute freedom guaranteed by the state to thereby achieve its wellness. Such freedom preached by liberal ideology intensified the social question, in that freedom (especially as freedom of negotiation) in a context of gross material inequality became in a freedom to explore than an truly autonomy. The Modern Law was also constituted under this perspective: to allow ample freedom in relations between individuals, without any intervention of the State, unless the allocation of support such competition, regulating the relations of conflict between individuals in their conflicts interest. Contemporaneously, however , in a historical moment in which , under the paradigm of Democratic State of Law, solidarity is replaced central role as a way to overcome the inequalities bequeathed by the Liberal State - such feature state suffers transformation towards greater state intervention in this freedom - once unrestricted - individuals. The doctrinal discussions regarding such intervention whenever the assumption of a relationship of conflict between the parties , with diametrically opposed positions and usually in situations where one party has clear economic power over another, called "Power-Individuals". Accordingly, we seek to present the contribution of the notion of Cooperative-Community Relations for the unveiling of the phenomenon in the contemporary, to lay the foundation for the Efficiency of Fundamental Rights in such relationships, not a feature "semi-state" of such societies , nor in the recognition of an "Power-Individuals" Relations, but in recognition of Cooperative Societies as democratic societies , in which the observance of fundamental rights becomes his condiction.

“Where the Shadows Lie: Finding the Other in the Spatial Depictions of the Underworld in The Book of Enoch, Inferno and Paradise Lost” answers a question of spatial behaviour in the three texts, in terms of the portrayal of the characters of Fallen Angels, who have been Othered from Heaven, in each text within the spatial context of their respective heterotopias. The spatial behaviour refers to how these characters are portrayed to act within a certain space, with that behaviour directly shaped and influenced by the space and place that the characters are depicted in. The question of spatial behaviour in this study revolves around whether the behaviour within the Othered space is that of acceptance, or of rebellion. The narrative of each text is analysed as a whole, in order to be contextualised through a Narratological analysis, as well as a Hermeneutic reading and a contextualisation within the realm of Social-Scientific Criticism. The texts are then analysed in more detail, with particular focus given to 1 Enoch 6-21, lines 1-9 and 22-57 in Inferno, and lines 33-45, 52-55, and 64-110 in Paradise Lost in order to Deconstruct their base similarities and then to answer the research question of spatial behaviour through Critical Spatiality. This analysis investigates the aspect of Thirding-as-Othering, in terms of how the Othered space is represented, and how the (Othered) Fallen Angels inhabit that space, based on the choices available to them: either, accept the imposed differentiation and division, or to resist their own “Otherness” and the Othered space that they were sentenced to. These spatial behaviours depict the choices taken by the author of each text, based on the cultural and religious values of their times and cultures, to represent the spatial behavioural options of their narratives’ characters. These options are the choice to fight against the banishment and make a space of Power out of the Othered space, or to accept being Othered and accept the Othered space for the prison it is meant to portray. This study incorporates a Narratological Analysis of The Book of Enoch, Inferno and Paradise Lost, followed by a Hermeneutical Interpretation and Social-Scientific reading. The texts are then analysed in terms of the focal points of 1 Enoch 6-21, lines 1-9 and 22-57 in Inferno, and lines 33-45, 52-55, and 64-110 in Paradise Lost, and are Deconstructed in terms of the spatial depictions of the Underworlds in order to determine the similarities in conditions, both physical and emotional, that are created by the Thirding, which is ultimately investigated, in terms of Critical Spatial Theory, in order to answer the aforementioned research question.

Annotation:
The thesis aims to provide a critical assessment of Camilo Torres' concept of efficacious love in the light of a hermeneutics and ethics of liberation, to contribute theoretically to theological reflection upon the mission of the Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in Colombia, and generally in Latin America. It proposes the thesis that the theology of Camilo Torres, viewed from the perspective of a hermeneutics and an ethics of liberation, can be foundational for seeking, constructing, and sustaining peace with justice in a context of oppression and violence. Based on the theological analysis, the academic and spiritual motivation should respond to two fundamental questions in our academic inquiry: what foundation exists in Camilo Torres' theology for the construction of a just, peaceful, liberative society and to enable proximity to the excluded, victimized, and poor population in Colombia to be achieved? And how can we as Christians respond to the grace of God in living efficaciously the values of the Kingdom of God, in order to bring structural changes in Colombia? The implications of the answers to those questions would result in the possibility to execute an integrating theological proposal for peace with justice for the church in Colombia. In an interpretative mode, we consider critically the multidisciplinary interaction of some of the theological foundations of liberation theology. Our task consists in clarifying and constructing theological presuppositions for a dialectical examination of the historical and current situation in Colombia, viewed in the light of the internal problems and realities. Thus, it is our intention in order to attempt a significant interdisciplinary juncture, to examine and interpret such relevant concepts as efficacious love, faith with works, kenosis, hypostatic union, hermeneutics and ethics of liberation, social justice, personal and collective socio-political conversion, and a praxis of faith as the church's mission in response to the Colombian context of poverty and violence.

This dissertation aims to analyse how legal scholars in Brazil adopted Robert Alexy’s balancing theory of legal principles. In order to do so, it will work within a theoretical framework known as critical hermeneutics of law (“Crítica Hermenêutica do Direito” - CHD). This work is structurally divided in three parts. During the first, it will explain how Robert Alexy tailored the balancing theory of legal principle to be a critical response to the jurisprudence of values that was widespread in Germany and applied by its Supreme Court. The second chapter will analyse how Brazilian legal scholars adopted Alexy’s theory. In addition, it will explain the historical background surrounding its adoption, which will allow understanding how Brazilian peculiarities led to the assemblage of a very different balancing theory, far away from Alexy’s original works. This assemblage was essential to the development of two common concepts in Brazilian legal thinking: “neo constitutionalism” and “judicial activism”. The former was an attempt to overcome legal positivism, but failed due to the very nature of legal norms and the result of discretionary interpretations. The latter, as will be seen, is completely different of the judicialization of politics. This distinction allows understanding how judicial activism is inevitably away to institutionalise judges’ will of power. In the last chapter, the text will focus on how the theoretical framework proposed here (CHD) perceives Alexy’s balancing theory. In order to proceed with this, it will demonstrate three different but inherently linked approaches: first, the revolution of Martin Heidegger’s and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s idea of “method”; second, Ronald Dworkin’s thesis that law is an interpretive concept which needs integrity; third, Lenio Streck’s decision theory as an alternative to solve the problem of discretionary judicial decisions. Considering these relevant theoretical perspectives, this dissertation aims to propose a reflection upon usual assumptions that underlie the incorporation of Robert Alexy’s balancing theory by Brazilian legal scholars and show how it is incompatible with hermeneutical rationality.

The overall aim of this thesis is to illuminate meanings of the relation between human beings, technology and care, as narrated by critical care nurses and people in need of home mechanical ventilation (HMV). The data are based on narrative research interviews with six intensive care nurses (I), 13 people who were about to start HMV (II), these 13 people were interviewed for a second time six to eight months after HMV had started (III), and nine persons with more than two years HMV experience (IV). The text was analysed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic research method as described by Lindseth and Norberg. The method is developed from the writings of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. The findings illuminate meanings of nursing care in an intensive care unit (I) as undertaking the role of advocacy as a caring response to another human being. The basic condition for this caring response depends on the nurses' openness and sensitivity to the needs of patients or patients' next of kin. The nurses were aware of the influence of technology and tried to modify its negative effects. Meanings of becoming dependent on HMV (II) are interpreted and metaphorically expressed as "to get one's breath" and "to hold one's breath" respectively. On the one hand, breathing ensures the cellular oxidation process within the body, but on the other hand there can be "shortness of breath" in "spiritual breathing", and starting HMV will influence patients' whole life situation, body and spirit. After using a ventilator six to eight months, meanings of a life dependent on a ventilator was interpretd as either a closure or an opening of the lived body to oneself, other people and the world. This interpretation is illustrated by two images. A life on a ventilator at home is not to be seen as static being. On the contrary, it is a being which moves and changes over time. Being dependent on a ventilator and living at home, as narrated by adults with more than two years of HMV experience (IV), was interpreted as being able to rise above yourself and your personal boundaries in order to live a good life. These meanings are bound up with experiencing a vital force and interdependency, and despite fragility being able to reach others and the outside world. Design and function of technology had an impact on the lived body. The comprehensive understanding of the four articles (I-IV) unfolded meanings of the relation between human beings, technology and care, as an interchange and a creation of physical and spiritual energy among humans and between human and technology. It could be an experience of the lived body being filled with as well as emptied of energy. This interpretation points at a call for the caring personnel to be attentive and to listen to the voices of the lived body in health and illness, and to bear witness to those who suffer. Technology acts between the person and the world and in order to be embodied, technology must be "transparent", i.e. beautiful and fit to its use.

The main goal of this research to understand the creation and development of the so called Parceled Graduation which main focus was the formation of math teachers. Such courses were offered by Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso – UEMT- and Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS, respectively in the 70's and 90's. The methodological framework was given by Oral History and Thompson’s Hermeneutics of the Depth. Particular remarks on the regional context emerge from the analytic process: the division of Mato Grosso state, the creation of Mato Grosso do Sul state, the influences and political disputes, deficiencies and urgencies that allowed graduations like Parceled Graduation to be essential for Mathematics teachers formation.

Thesis (PhD (Education Policy Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
Dissertation presented for the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Stellenbosch University.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this critical-hermeneutical inquiry into schools as learning organisations I use the service provision model of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) as an exemplification of the concept of a learning organisation. In this inquiry, which is conceptual in nature, I explore whether their service provision model is sufficient to turn schools into learning organisations. With the establishment of Education Management and Development Centres (EMDCs) in the Western Cape, the WCED expressed its intention to develop schools in the Western Cape into learning organisations. I do a literature review to develop a conceptual framework of a learning organisation. From the literature review I constructed five constitutive meanings of a learning organisation. These meanings serve as conceptual lenses to explore how schools can be developed into learning organisations. Furthermore, I analyse some of the WCED service provision policies against the five constitutive meanings. These constitutive meanings include quality, inclusivity, collaborative teamwork, communication and power, which determine if the WCED policies are consistent with its objective to develop schools into learning organisations. Through my analysis I found that the WCED‟s policies are not compatible with all constitutive meanings. This led me to conclude that the WCED‟s understanding of a learning organisation is fundamentally and conceptually flawed as the WCED‟s service provision model operates within a controlled and regulated environment at the expense of internal school development. Interviews and the interpretation of data further reveal that the WCED‟s service provision model is not adequate to develop schools into learning organisations. This flawed understanding may have resulted partly in the WCED‟s adoption of a single, unitary managerialist approach to their service provision model because of the strong emphasis on compliance rather than cooperation that should exist between schools and the WCED. Based on the constitutive meanings I constructed for a learning organisation, I conclude that a managerialist approach serves the WCED‟s interest more than it serves the interest of teachers and classroom practice. The main argument of this study is that a communicative deliberative idea of democracy could reconceptualise the WCED‟s inadequate understanding of a learning organisation. A key aspect of developing schools into learning organisations may begin with instituting better lines of communication which should include elements like reflexive discussion, communicative freedom, consensus and decision-making processes. These elements form the basis of what constitutes a learning organisation. This reconceptualised notion of a learning organisation can best be done through deliberative democracy with its emphasis on public argumentation with equal opportunity with the aim of arriving at an agreed judgement. This study suggests that the WCED adopts a communicative deliberative idea of democracy as a notion of communication which is a more ideal vehicle that could assist in developing schools into learning organisations.

This thesis aims at studying the symbolical imagery of Shakespeare’s Sonnets in the light of modern theories on the imaginary, symbolism, and myth put forward by authors such as C.G. Jung, P. Ricoeur, and G. Durand. It attempts at showing a part of Shakespeare’s creative process by identifying personal myths, recurrent images, as well as archetypes and archetypal patterns inherent in the Sonnets. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents Shakespeare as a poet and summarizes some critical approaches and consequent problems that have been part of the Sonnets´ critical heritage. It also anticipates the discussion on the importance of the reader’s imaginary in the hermeneutic process. Chapter two is divided in two segments. The first, where I present the grounds on which myth, literature and symbols are related, as well as Ricoeur’s theory of the metaphor; and the second, that consists of general imaginary symbolic data about the 154 sonnets, approached through a modernized version of the 1609 Quarto. In addition, there comes the analysis of sonnets 28 and 146, as models for the others to come in chapter 3. Finally, chapter three The Hermeneutics of Symbolical Imagery in Shakespeare’s Sonnets, displays the study of recurrent images, archetypes, archetypal patterns and personal myths within Shakespeare’s Sonnets. The Conclusion reflects upon the work’s attempt at showing the importance of symbolic images for the study of the sonnets, as well as considers some of the ways through which the imaginary of the writer and that of the reader bind, generating meaning.

This thesis aims to explore the ways in which the news media focuses on the foreign policy of Brazil from the coverage made about the relations developed by the country in the south-south axis during Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva administration (2003-2010). I realize that the Brazilian state has undergone a major international insertion process, and the increase of these foreign relations had among its consequences a greater presence in the country on the world scene at the same time that nations and peoples who had little presence in the news about the events outside became the topic of domestic news coverage. The country took part in new dynamics, which, in this research, is represented by the analysis of news coverage conducted by the Veja portal – one of the most accessed in Brazil and representative, in the sphere of internet, of the eponymous magazine – on the establishment of the BRICS group (2005-2010), the involvement of the Honduran political crisis (2009-2010) and in the negotiations, together with Turkey, on Iran's nuclear program (2010). Over the period between 2003 and 2010, the media-journalistic complex which Veja is part has established itself as a instance of strong opposition to Lula, questioning its premises. In the case of the conduct of foreign policy, the success of Worker´s Party (PT) administration ended up serving as a form of internal and external visibility. In this investigation, I contend that the Veja portal criticism aim to lessen the impact of the popularity of Lula and, therefore, the news coverage is supported by the drive and representations that expose the use of negative stereotypes based on political premises, economic, historical and sociocultural negative bias. To realize this work, I use the Depth Hermeneutics, as disposed by Thompson (2009), which comprises: production and transmission of symbolic forms mediated by such means; construction of communication messages; and reception and appropriation of media messages. I focus my attention especially to the second stage, for which I use the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis.

The present dissertation examines how culture in terms of webs of significance comprises even everyday genres, and how everyday genres in turn partake in creating cultural contexts. The theoretical cornerstones of this study are to be found in a dialogical notion of context and a semiotic notion of culture. Furthermore, the study benefits from the analytical concept of communicative genre by which texts can be set in the broader context of societal or socio-cultural relevancy. The methodological framework – with contrastive viewing as an overall heuristic approach – has been developed by combining elements from linguistic hermeneutics, literary cultural analysis, and critical discourse analysis. The study shows that the most significant trait of Swedish milk package texts is the recontextualization of national historical topics, closely entangled with elements of school discourse and children’s literature. This endows the texts with a certain socio-cultural meaning, even though this meaning is dependent on other interactive resources. However, on recent milk packages, changes of communicative patterns can be seen, indicating socio-cultural change. The most significant trait of German milk packages is – besides the ubiquitous use of fresh generating an advertising context – the recontextualization of the fictionalizing topos of locus amoenus, closely intertwined with control and surveillance. The contrastive viewing of 19th-century texts in the dissertation makes clear that contemporary German milk packages still imply urban-bourgeois perspectives on rurality. Finally, the study shows that culture in terms of webs of significance has no location where it is, but a location where it is represented – for instance in everyday genre texts. It illustrates how linguistic hermeneutics can be done.

Annotation:
This dissertation engages with contemporary interpretations of Nietzsche and Heidegger on the issue of self-knowing with respect to the notions of honesty and authenticity. Accounting for the two philosophers' developing conceptions of these notions allows a response to interpreters who conceive the activity of self-knowing as a primarily personal problem. The alternative accounts proposed take as a point of departure transitional texts that reveal both thinkers to be engaged in processes of revision. The reading of honesty in Chapters 1 and 2 revolves around Nietzsche's groundwork on prejudice in Morgenröthe (1880-81), where he first problematizes the moral-historical forces entailed in actuating the 'will to truth'. The reading of authenticity in Chapters 3 and 4 revolves around Heidegger's lectures on what motivates one's thinking in Was heißt Denken? (1951-52). The lectures call into question his previous formal suppositions on what calls forth one's 'will-to-have-a-conscience', in an interpretation of Parmenides on the issue of thought's linguistic determination, discussed further in the context of Unterwegs zur Sprache (1950-59). Chapter 5 shows how Heidegger's confrontation with Nietzsche contributed to his ongoing revisions to the notion of authenticity, and to the attending conceptions of critique and its authority. Particular attention is given to the specific purposes to which distinct Nietzschean foils are put near the confrontation's beginning--in Heidegger's lectures on Nietzsche's second Unzeitgemässe Betrachtung (1938), and in the monograph entitled Besinnung (1939) which they prepare--and near its end, in the interpretation of Also Sprach Zarathustra (1883-85) presented in the first half of Was heißt Denken? Chapter 6 recapitulates the developments traced from the vantage point of the retrospective texts Die Zollikoner Seminare (1959-72) and the fifth Book of Die fröhliche Wissenschaft (1887). Closing remarks are made in relation to recent empirical research on the socio-environmental structures involved in determining self-identity.

The main objective of this research is to investigate the socio-religious potential of the popular reading of the Bible in function of transformation. In this research, we will analyze the thought of Carlos Mesters and its interpretation developed by the Center for Biblical Studies - CEBI. To reach our goal, we will work, particularly with two popular biblical readings, namely, "The way to Emmaus and The Popular Reading of the Bible: Searching for the Lost Coin , both used as a methodology for biblical reading within CEBI. These approaches of interpretation intend to go beyond the study of the biblical texts and seek to contribute to the process of conscientization towards transformation of the reality of domination and oppression. It is in this context that we study the critical feminist hermeneutics of liberation articulated by Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, as an important tool to examine and dialogue with these popular approaches of reading. We relate the methodology of Cebi to a feminist and emancipatory paradigm of biblical interpretation. In addition to pedagogical and methodological issues, this enterprise results in the problematisation of some theological themes intrinsic to biblical interpretation, namely, the subject of interpretation, the analysis of reality and the criteria to define revelation and authority. From this dialogue between "popular reading of the bible" and "critical feminist hermeneutics of liberation , we come to the conclusion that the first, despite being defined as an approach to a liberating biblical interpretation shows some gaps in relation to this goal. From the analysis of the different methodological steps of interpretation and the theological themes, we perceive within Mesters´s project and more specifically in the project of CEBI, the absence of analytical tools which could facilitate the transformation of the concrete socio-religious realities, the analysis of the experiences of the subjects of interpretation, and the reflection on criterias to define the place of revelation and authority. The thesis is not intended to replace the popular method of Biblical reading by the hermeneutical dance proposed by Schüssler. The thesis instead tries to rethink the possibilities and problems of the popular biblical reading in its attempt to transform reality. In this sense, the dialogue with political emancipatory theories articulated theologically and biblically by Schüssler may be important for political and methodological reassessment of CEBI. (AU)

Critical reflection as a learning tool for nursing supervisors is a complex and multifaceted process not completely understood by healthcare leadership, specifically nurse supervisors. Despite a multitude of research studies on critical reflection, there remains a gap in the literature regarding the perceptions of the individual, the support required in the environment, and stimulus needed to integrate critical reflection into the nurse supervisor role. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the meaning critical reflection has for nurse supervisors and the role of critical reflection within clinical practice settings. The data obtained through a modified vanKaam analysis employing NVivo 9 software revealed five themes concerning critical reflection. These five themes include (a) personal experience, (b) sources of valuing critical reflection, (c) self-awareness as primary competency, (d) time is a function of prioritization and (e) framework tools for workplace integration. Critical reflection meaning developed through nurse supervisors’ past experiences with critical incidents and a willingness to develop their own self-awareness. The role critical reflection plays in the environment can be enhanced through making it a priority in the workplace and providing training necessary to increase understanding of the process. Workplace integration requires developing nurse supervisors’ facilitation skills. The study findings support the underlying value critical reflection holds as a significant part of supporting organizational transformation toward a learning organization culture.

Abstract: This study examines from a discourse-analytical perspective the effects arisen from the practice of commenting the Bible that was followed by two early Christian key figures: Jerome of Stridon (c. 370-420 AD) and Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD). The impact of these commentatorial works is investigated both with regarding to the way in which the very biblical text was materially (orthography, lexicon, phraseology, chapter order) handed down and to the history of its hermeneutical reception (the topics and themes which have been favored at the expense of all other possibilities). The purpose therefore is to demonstrate how powerful such commentatorial interventions are in the forming of the biblical canon and also in underpinning assumptions that the set of texts brought together under the rubric of Bible or Sacred Scriptures forms ultimately - in spite of a textual surface presenting disparities and sometimes great contradictions of linguistic, narrative or even theological character - a text which expresses just one and the same authorial design

Biodiversity is all around us, in what we wear, eat, into objects from our daily, past and future lives. It is present as an explosion of colors and hues, sounds and smells. It is both invisible and inescapable. The discourses on biodiversity are also multiple: it is the basis of life on Earth, it is essential, and yet suffers constant threats. In this thesis we seek to raise possibilities of working with biodiversity as a theme in an urban environment, the São Carlos Ecological Pole, and to understand the meanings attributed to biodiversity by researchers and students in the Life Sciences and similar areas, and to envision possibilities for addressing the concept of biodiversity in environmental education processes conducted within the principles of a critical environmental education. We conducted a qualitative study, using naturalist research techniques and the Delphi Method, and used a philosophical hermeneutics perspective to interpret and understand the data. This research generated nine categories of meaning attributed to biodiversity: Concreteness, Symbolic, Knowledge, Holism, Kaleidoscope, Hidden, Threatened, Inclusive and Exclusive, listed 16 sets of concepts considered essential, organized in spheres that contemplate aspects of scientific content, values and action, and six suggestions of themes that can help the process of learning about biodiversity: Experiencing biodiversity; "Opening your eyes" for biodiversity; Exercising dialogue/discussions; Acknowledging the importance of biodiversity and the limits of human interference; Biodiversity in our own territory; Overcoming teaching fragmentation. The results are ideas, suggestions, possibilities to be explored from the perspective of a critical environmental education, and must be contextualized in processes that respect the multiplicity of views on environmental issues, and seek understanding and to build agreements that allow for action in favor of the diversity of life on Earth.
