This article describes some ideas, theoretical and clinical, related to group treatment of residents in a New York City homeless shelter for mentally ill persons immediately subsequent to the World Trade Center disaster. I provide details concerning this group as it dealt with community-level crises that were both acute, as they related to the World Trade Center disaster, and chronic, as they dealt with the ongoing condition of being mentally ill and homeless. I discuss my experience in the group and the ways that a synthesis of group, interpersonal psychoanalytic, and community psychology principles formed a framework for working through traumatic experiences in this community.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the attitude of the Visegrad Group countries towards the immigration crisis in the EU. The article shows the joint activities of the V4 countries and their decisions taken at national level. The main thesis posed in this article states that the negative attitudes towards compulsory relocation of immigrants have activated the Visegrad Group countries and have integrated them with common aims. The article shows a split in among the member states of the EU and thus a lack of solidarity in solving the immigration’s problem.

Purpose – The concept of media reputation is a well-documented field in communication research. However, it often remains unclear how the process of reputation formation takes place exactly. The purpose of this paper is to analyze which stakeholder groups are the driving forces in the process of reputation constitution of the Swiss banking industry and how it was affected by the financial crisis in 2008. Design/methodology/approach – Given that mass media are the main source of information about an organization in crisis for the public, media reputation serves as a valuable concept for analyzing the effects of crises on organizations. This study is therefore based on a content analysis of Swiss newspapers published between 2004 and 2010. Findings – Data shows that the influence of political stakeholder groups on media reputation of Swiss banks is higher in times of crisis. In addition the focus in media coverage changes from economic topics in pre-crisis period to social topics in crisis period. The increased importance of political stakeholder groups and social topics in crisis lead to a more negative and less controllable media reputation. Originality/value – This study aims at a better understanding of the impact of stakeholder groups on corporate media reputation in crises. Instead of defining reputation as a single item this approach allows a more differentiated analysis of the process of reputation constitution.

The importance of correct and clear decisions during a complex and difficult situation is very easy to understand, but not so easy to achieve. Especially in situations where decision-makers must decide under time pressure and uncertainty. For instance, typical crisis situations have such characteristics. Given the uncertainty, subjectivity and ambiguity of human knowledge, crisis situations are also characterized by conflicting interests. In this article, we propose an approach based on fuzzy set theory to help decision-makers to find the collective decision considering weights of each member of the decision-making group. More specifically, the proposed approach uses new and innovative transformation of fuzzy numbers through α-level cuts. The key role in the transformation process is played by the shape and position of fuzzy numbers. Additionally, the Hamming distance will be used for the final interpretation of the results, in order to minimize the loss of information caused by defuzzification.

AbstractIntroduction and purpose: In practice, the existing models of tackling companies’ crises are still lacking effectiveness and efficiency. The agile crisis project management model (ACPM) is based on the crisis project management doctrines, which we upgraded with the principles and methodologies of agile project management. It was developed for the resolution of such crises. Methods: Relying on scientific knowledge and in accordance with the defined research problem, we decided to use the qualitative research methods while using a method of highly structured interviews for data collection. A comparative case studies method was used for the comparative comparison of effectiveness and efficiency among the sample companies, which were divided into groups A and B. Companies in group A used the non-project approach, the traditional project, and/or the hybrid non-project–traditional project approach (CM approach) in implementing the planned measures and activities in the restructuring process and/or renovation; companies in group B used the agile project and/or the hybrid agile project–traditional project approach (ACPM approach). Results: The studied companies facing crises used various implementation approaches for the planned measures and activities within the framework of the crisis solution. The companies using the ACPM approach (group B) completed their restructuring and/or renewal process more quickly and were more effective and efficient after the crisis than during the pre-crisis period. At the same time, their net sales growth was also higher than the growth of companies using the CM approach (group A).Conclusion: The article demonstrates the results of the research, which studied the effectiveness and efficiency of resolving the sample companies’ crises. In accordance with the research results, we conclude that supplementing the crisis project management with an agile project approach when resolving company crises positively affects the efficiency and effectiveness of companies after the crisis.

The stability of colleges and universities is closely related to the stability of the country and society. Counselors play an extremely important role in the daily management of colleges and universities. Colleges and universities are an important part of society. Multiple social conflicts will affect and project on colleges and universities, which at the same time leads to the difficulty of student management, especially in the face of group crisis events. The school needs to respond quickly, and counselors promptly and effectively intervene to minimize the damage caused by the crisis event, which is of great significance for maintaining the stability of college campuses. In the crisis of college students, college counselors should strengthen their role positioning, maximize their functions and realize their value, so as to effectively reduce the incidence of college crisis events and create a healthier and safer campus environment for college students.

The Pacific region is part of a larger world, far from being as isolated from centres of global power as a glance at the map might imply, but instead caught up in a web of multilateral relations with binding effects on its future progress and prosperity. This article considers such connections, in regard to both governmental and non-governmental agencies, referring in particular to the proliferation of highly influential non-governmental organisations in the region, as in the world at large. It treats the European Union handling of the December 2006 Fijian coup d'état and its aftermath as a case study in government-to-government relations, and it provides secondly a detailed case study on the operations of one outstanding example of a non-governmental organisation, the International Crisis Group.

SummaryFifty-one mother-infant pairs were followed prospectively by home visits and telephone contacts during the first 6 months post-partum. Comparisons between mothers who experienced lactation crises because of perceived breast-milk insufficiency (crisis group) and those who did not (non-crisis group) revealed differences in attitudes to breast-feeding, breast-feeding behaviour and sexual life. The crisis group tended to initiate breast-feeding for infant-related reasons more frequently than the non-crisis group, which more frequently gave mother-related reasons. During the course of breastfeeding attitude changes in a negative direction were significantly more common in the crisis group. No difference was found between the groups in the resumption of sexual life, but 59% of all the women claimed that they experienced less or no desire compared to before pregnancy and, of these, a significantly higher proportion belonged to the crisis group.

This paper presents a critical discourse analysis (henceforth, CDA) of the news items which tackled the Syrian crisis in the English-speaking Russian TV channel Russia Today (henceforth, RT). It aims to show the channel’s polarization into its in-group and out-group of the reports that focused on the Syrian crisis. To achieve its aim, the study hypothesizes that: 1) RT utilizes discursive strategies in order to positively present its in-group (Russia, the Syrian regime, and its allies) and negatively present the out-group (the USA, Europe, and their allies) and 2) Russia’s military involvement in Syria affected the way RT reports its Syrian crisis news. In order to test the two hypotheses, the study analyzes six reports that tackle the Syrian crisis from RT: three reports before and three after the Russian military involvement. After presenting a theoretical background of the field of CDA, the study follows two models by van Dijk, namely, the Ideological Square (1998), and Ideological Discourse Analysis (1995b) to analyze the data.

Organizational legitimacy has been useful approach to studying relationship management in crisis. This presentation suggests an expansion of organizational legitimacy theory: victim-group legitimacy. Multiple recent cases of crisis involving historically marginalized groups (HMGs) suggest that organizations may not be fully prepared to respond to crises involving HMGs. Recent cases also suggest that publics now routinely see modern crises as chapters within larger marginalization narratives. Victim-group legitimacy acts as a framework for evaluating, interpreting, and responding to not only the crisis at hand, but the historical crisis between an organization and HMGs.

Aims and methodTo measure the take-up of formal crisis plans in a specialist home treatment team (HTT) serving an ethnically diverse urban population; and to implement a quality improvement programme and measure its impact on crisis plan completion. Two audits were completed of patients before and after the implementation of a quality improvement programme. Descriptive data are shown by ethnic group, by gender, and for people with multiple hospital admissions.ResultsAt baseline, 16.7% of patients at high risk of admission had an HTT crisis plan, compared with 26.7% of a comparison group. Only 23.1% of the crisis plans for patients with a history of frequent admission mentioned the prevention of future admissions. Crisis plan completion improved following the quality improvement programme, when 80.0% of discharges had an HTT crisis plan; of these, 73.0% mentioned admission prevention. In the follow-up audit, 22.7% of patients in the multiple admission group had been readmitted to hospital at least once. Crisis plan completion did not appear to differ by ethnic group or gender and did not appear to be related to hospital readmission.Clinical implicationsCrisis plan completion improved with simple practical methods, but completion was unrelated to gender, ethnicity or later readmission.

Through two experiments, this study examines the relationship between linguistic choice and attribution perception in organizational crisis. Experiment 1 demonstrated that abstract (vs. concrete) language in crisis news elicited higher attribution and lower purchase intentions. Experiment two showed that preventable (vs. victim) crisis led to higher usage of abstract language in describing and commenting on the crisis. Also, abstract language use in describing and commenting on the crisis mediates crisis clusters’ effect on purchase intentions. Furthermore, attribution of crisis responsibility mediated crisis cluster and in-group/out-group’s effects on abstract language use in describing and commenting on the crisis. The findings empirically connect two attribution theory-rooted theories: linguistic category model and the situational crisis communication theory.

Objective: To investigate the effect of crisis intervention in middle-aged and young patients with acute myocardial infarction after percutaneous coronary stent implantation (PCI). Methods: A total of 108 middle-aged and young patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing PCI were selected from July 2018 to July 2019 in the Department of Cardiology, Hai'an County People's Hospital. They were divided into two groups, according to a random number table, with 54 cases in each group. The control group implemented routine postoperative intervention, and the intervention group implemented postoperative crisis intervention. The changes in the two groups' sense of crisis, mental state, quality of life and hope level before and after the intervention were compared. Results: The emotional, behavioral, and cognitive scores of the intervention group were lower than those of the control group after 4 weeks of intervention (P < .05). The mental state scores of the intervention group were lower than those of the control group (P < .05). Also, the various quality of life scores were higher than those of the control group (P < .05). The intervention group’s hope level scores were higher than the control group (P < .05) after 4 weeks of intervention. Conclusion: The application of crisis intervention to middle-aged and young patients with acute myocardial infarction after PCI can reduce the sense of crisis, improve their mental state and quality of life, and raise the level of hope.

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a counseling supervisory program based on the discrimination model in improving crisis counseling skills for family reform counselors in Jordan. The sample of the study consisted of 30 female and male counselors, who were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group (15) male and female counselors received the supervisory program according to the discrimination model with 90-minute 18 weekly sessions over 9 weeks, whereas the control group (15) female and male counselors did not receive the supervisory program. The Family Crisis Skills Scale which consists of 59 items was divided into three subscales: Family Crisis Counseling, Counseling Relation Skills, and Procedures of Intervention & Response to Crisis. It was used with the total sample in the pre-post-test, and in the follow-up test only with experimental group. The results of the study showed that there are statistically significant differences in the overall mean scores of the posttest and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale between the two study group, in favor of the experimental group. Also, the results showed that although the differences between the two groups in the overall mean scores of the post-follow-up test and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale were not statistically significant, there was a positive gain of improvement for the experimental group. These findings suggest that the counselors in the experimental group retained the impact of the program, and provided evidence that the impact of the program was efficient and sustainable.

The aim of this paper is to measure the sensitivity of commercial banks from the Erste Group to the confidence crisis on the interbank market and to compare their sensitivity with average sensitivity of banks in particular countries. We have used the methodology of scenario analysis for the liquid asset ratio. All banks belonging to the Erste Group should be able to withstand the confidence crisis on the interbank market. The group of the most vulnerable banks consists from Erste bank Hungary and Banca Comerciala Romana from Romania. In some cases, banks from the Erste Group are more sensitive; while in other cases are banks belonging to the Erste Group less vulnerable than corresponding banking sectors. Except of banks from Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, subsidiary banks are less sensitive to the confidence crisis than the parent bank. Banks (and banking sectors) who are net borrowers on the interbank market are much more sensitive to the confidence crisis on this market.
