AbstractMany crafts in premodern Europe depended on migratory journeymen. Little is known about these workers, or how craft guilds and urban authorities affected their movement. By employing novel data on thousands of journeymen from different crafts and cities in Holland, we provide the first systematic overview of journeymen migration and settlement patterns in The Dutch Republic. We find that migration and settlement patterns differed significantly by occupational sector, marital status, and skill level. The stance of urban authorities towards migrants significantly affected settlement patterns as well. This interrelation of group-level characteristics, craft guilds, and urban regulation demonstrates the significance of examining these elements in tandem.

With the development of the times, more and more people are willing to go to museums to feel the charm of historical precipitation compared with entertainment places. Museums have also adopted various ways to publicize, such as cultural souvenirs. Cultural relics break the stereotype that can be seen from afar but not obscene, and integrate with the vitality of contemporary life, and are accepted by the young group. On the contrary to the “hot” of the museums is the “cold” of traditional arts and crafts. The change of social aesthetic tendency makes traditional arts and crafts face a severe test. How to promote the inheritance of traditional arts and crafts has become an issue that cannot be ignored. In view of the problem of the combination of traditional craft innovation and development are discussed, so that the traditional craft will continue to shine in the new era.

Reinwardtia 15(2): 67 – 79. — Many plants are used for making plaited crafts such as basketry and woven mats by the Dayak Iban-Désa, a sub-tribe of the Dayak in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. The Dayak Iban-Désa gather the craft materials mostly from the plants in the forest. However, the habitats of these plants are being threatened by deforestation. The diversity of plants used for crafts is here documented. This study recorded the scientific names of plant species used for the craft plaiting, and observed abundance of plants used for craft. Information about the plants used were gathered using non-structural interview and focus group discussion (FGD) with the informants and participants. The abundance of plaited plants was observed in 46 plots of 10 × 10 m2 plots by participative ecological method. Nineteen plants species were used as plaited material, belonging to four families: Arecaceae, Poaceae, Pandanaceae and Zingiberaceae. Two species of rattan (Calamus sp. and Plectocomiopsis wrayi Becc.) have the highest Index Cultural Significance (ICS) value. Those species were considered as the most valuable plant materials because of the quality of fiber, intensity on harvesting, and the resulting quality of plaited craft products. However, the demand for high quality products is not always supported by the availability of plant materials in the forest. Therefore, the cultural significance of plants (the ICS values) and their availability should be considered when determining the conservation strategy for each of these species.

In Handwerksbetrieben finden solche Konzepte bislang wenig Anwendung. The skilled crafts sector is an important part of the German economy. The digital transformation confronts many craft businesses with new opportunities and numerous challenges. One way to counter the complex effects of the digital transformation is business model innovation. In industrial companies and the startup scene, methods for business model innovation, such as Gassmann’s Business Model Navigator, are well established. In craft businesses, such concepts have so far found little application. This observation motivated the exploratory study presented here. The study aims at determining whether existing methods are suitable for skilled crafts and, if needed, how relevant adaptations should be made. The goal is to develop a target-group-oriented toolbox of methods for craft businesses.

This study applied a qualitative approach and is descriptive in nature. Techniques of collecting data include site observation, interview, document review, and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed using the interactive model and thematic analysis. Research results indicate four themes. First, leather craft industry in Magetan that is mostly home industry has been empowered in many ways. Several aspects, including a high number of tourist visits, local government policy, abundant human resources, and industrious businessmen have strengthened the industry. Some local government policies have been implemented in several programs to develop the industry. Second, quality products and new design innovation for leather crafts are limited. Most products that are dominated by shoes and sandals are created for lower-middle-income consumers. Third, leather craft industries in Magetan have contributed to the establishment of local entrepreneurship, small-medium enterprises, and tourism. They create job opportunities for the locals and boost the local economy. Fourth, the relationship between leather craft centers and tourism activities is dominated by tourists’ purchase of leather craft products for souvenirs. However, tourism activity in the area is not yet aimed at watching and involving tourists in the process of craft making for educational tourism purposes.

Ceramic artists emerged as a professional group in France in the second half of the 20th century by shunning industrial standards and basing their practice on the notion of singularity. They also reappropriated the craft legacy of the small pottery companies that began disappearing in the 1940s, embracing principles such as seriality and functionality, and defining a specific bundle of tasks. Ceramicists underwent a partial artification process, rendering their practice discordant with what institutionally and legally constitutes art, as well as diverging from the standard definition of craft. Certain art ceramicists contest the cultural ranking that policymakers apply which excludes art-crafts from the purview of art. To claim recognition for the composite nature of their practice, they seek recourse to the courts to create new legal norms. They also strive to expand the definition of art. The article demonstrates how shifts in the balance of power both inside a professional group and between the group and government agencies can influence institutional definitions of art.

This article offers insights into the organization of Scioto Hopewell craft production and examines the implications of this organization through the lens of ritual economy. We present a novel analysis of investigations at the North 40 site, concluding that it is a craft production site located on the outskirts of the renowned Mound City Group. High-resolution landscape-scale magnetic survey revealed a cluster of three large structures and two rows of associated pits; one of the buildings and three of the pits were sampled in excavations. Evidence from the North 40 site marks this as the best-documented Scioto Hopewell craft production site. Mica, chert, and copper were crafted here in contexts organized outside the realm of domestic household production and consumption. Other material remains from the site suggest that crafting was specialized and embedded in ceremonial contexts. This analysis of the complex organization of Scioto Hopewell craft production provides grounds for further understanding the elaborate ceremonialism practiced by Middle Woodland (AD 1–400) societies and adds to the known complexity of craft production in small-scale societies. Furthermore, this article contributes to a growing body of literature demonstrating the utility of ritual economy as a framework for approaching the sociality of small-scale societies.

This article reports on a qualitative research project conducted in Victoria, Australia, with nine older women. The purpose of the research was to explore the women’s experience of involvement in craft groups, and specifically, the impact of this involvement on their sense of well-being. Traditionally the health of older people has been examined in relation to medical markers of physical well-being, and often, decline. We were interested to widen this perspective to understand the impact of social connection, belonging and ongoing learning and development on the ageing experience. While the focus of the groups was on domestic craftwork, the process of coming together as a collective appeared to have significant bearing on the holistic health of the women involved. Consistent with feminist groupwork literature, the findings indicated that the women we interviewed experienced the group setting as affirming and generative in a number of ways. These include providing an avenue for mutual aid, addressing isolation, affirming individual and collective strength and wisdom, while acquiring new skills, and normalising concerns regarding health and family.

Bamboo as a natural resource must be utilized as well as possible and its existence is maintained so that it does not run out. Bamboo products actually have a high aesthetic value. If bamboo is transformed into a beautiful craft, it will add high economic value and is a bright industrial prospect. In addition, bamboo material does not damage the environment, so it helps to protect nature and reduce theoccurrence of Global Warning. Consumers will be more observant in choosingenvironmentally friendly products. The existence of Bamboo Craftsmen in PehkulonVillage grows slowly and their products are considered unattractive in thecommunity. This is because many craftsmen have switched professions, besides thelack of production tools owned by bamboo craftsmen. So far, craftsmen makebamboo crafts using only very simple tools, namely knives and machetes. Besidesthat, craftsmen do not understand management science, such as financialmanagement, production management, marketing management, accounting andhave never received entrepreneurship coaching and training. Prior to communityservice activities, the products produced by the bamboo craft business group wereo nly bamboo fences and woven bamboo. After carrying out community service activities, now the bamboo craftsman business group has been able to make various product diversification and innovations such as: bamboo decorative lights, bamboo lap top cases, bamboo keyboards, bamboo mice, bamboo furniture, bamboo fountains, bamboo decorations, etc. With mentoring, training, discussion and participatory activities, bamboo craft business groups can produce varied products and innovations so that they can compete and increase people's income

Abstract This study calls into question the view that immigration from the British Isles in the first half of the nineteenth century dramatically altered the ethnic composition of the urban crafts of Lower Canada and resulted in the marginalisation of French-Canadian artisans. Unlike earlier studies, which relied essentially on the snapshots provided by the manuscript censuses of 1831 and 1842, this case study combines a variety of sources in order to reconstitute the entire population of Montreal's leather trades between 1815 and 1831. The evidence provided by this important group of crafts shows that, while the British presence increased, it was primarily confined to the most transient elements of the anisan population. A mong craftsmen who settled in Montréal for extended periods of time, French Canadians remained dominant. Although their relative importance declined, their absolute numbers grew. Vital craft traditions ensured that skills were transmitted from father to son and that apprenticeship thrived. While the local ecomony was the major source of new manpower throughout this period, there was a steady increase in the flow of young men into Montréal from the surrounding countryside.

Elite, Athenian, male – all three adjectives usually apply to our sources on the ancient world, and the study of ancient ethics (including even so-called ‘popular morality’) is no different in this respect. There are, however, a few exceptional sources that provide a window into a more diverse population and their hopes, desires, values, and insecurities. In the following, I wish to highlight one of these – the corpus of oracularlamellaefrom Dodona – and demonstrate how this body of evidence can shed new light on an old question. Specifically, I will consider what we can learn abouttechne(art, craft, profession) from these tablets; but in addition I hope readers with an interest in ancient ethics will see how promising this source is for further study on other topics. As I will show, alongside the better knownperi technesliterature – a group of texts from the fifth and fourth centuriesbcethat discuss medicine and other crafts from a theoretical standpoint – there is a small corpus of texts from Dodona that uses this same phrase and discusses the crafts from a far more practical perspective. The object of this article will be to show how these two corpora are mutually enlightening.

Poor households have not utilized coconut fiber that is very potential to improve their welfare. This study analyzed the root causes of poor households not yet utilizing the potential of coconut fiber craft as a source of livelihood. The potential of crafts that can be developed from coconut fiber and the strategy of building institutional, commercial business groups of poor households are based on the manufacture of coconut fiber crafts to be competitive and sustainable. The researchers collected data through observation, in-depth interviews, focused group discussion, and literature review. The results show that lack of knowledge is at the root of the leading cause of poor households not utilizing coconut fiber as their livelihood. The other causes are lack of skills, low education, weak access to information, lack of collective awareness, and a false understanding that coconut fiber handicraft products are not sold in the market. Even though the facts show that if processed into handicraft products, coconut fiber can be used by poor households to improve their welfare so that they can be economically empowered. Various strategies can be carried out to build the institutional economic business groups of poor households based on the manufacture of coconut fiber crafts, namely critical awareness, strengthening the capacity of poor households, both through skills training, on the job training, and in-service training. Besides, comparative studies of entrepreneurship can also be carried out, opening up access to information, opening access to micro-business financing, and building networks of poor households to the outside world.

Abstract In 2010, Lincoln Memorial University completed two cycles of an Appalachian College Association and University of North Carolina, Asheville (ACA-UNCA) undergraduate research project partnership. The focus of the grant was incorporated into a class entitled Crafts to Culture. The primary mission of the course was to record and preserve the stories and work of craftspeople identified in Bell County, Kentucky; Claiborne County, Tennessee; and Lee County, Virginia. Students explored and analyzed traditional art from the Cumberland Gap region with an emphasis on family traditions, techniques, and the unique characteristics of each craft. An additional course objective was to give students practical skills in the areas of history, art, and communications. Three different academic disciplines were combined with independent goals as students worked together as a group. First, history students gained oral history experience—through interview preparation and practice, recording, transcription, and publications. Second, art students gained art experience by learning the craft traditions from an expert and by replicating a product using the learned technique. Third, broadcast communication students gained communications experience through audio and video recording, editing, and publishing. Teamwork was a byproduct of this project as all of the students needed to work together. This paper reports on an Undergraduate Research Grant Project advisor’s mentoring experience.

The paper focuses on the mechanisms of interaction between graphic images and text descriptions, including historical and cultural information about ancient German crafts. The purpose of the article is to show the different types of interrelation of graphic images and verbal text. The concept of multimodality and discourse analysis serves as the theoretical and methodological basis of the research; selected works of recent years devoted to a given problem are presented in an overview. The methods of discourse analysis allow us to implement an extended approach to the discussion of different types of graphic sign systems and mechanisms of their interaction. The research material is a book about German crafts related to national architecture and construction technologies. Three ways of image and text interaction were identified. The first, the simplest, covers cases when the caption directly displays what is shown in the figure. In such cases, the image serves to clarify and concretize the text accompaniment. The second extensive group consists of examples when the text contains related information about the history of craft, the degree and causes of its prevalence in a certain area, etc. The third group consists of a few examples when the illustration is given an exclusively decorative function, and the text located next to it does not reveal a direct connection with the image. The three selected groups are nothing more than a research technique. In general, the image and text appear in the book as a holistic, communicatively indivisible unity.

H. J. Massingham was one of a group of writers flourishing between the wars who were concerned with recording the disappearing cultural traditions of an older rural world, describing the English countryside, and setting into motion a move to revitalise and regenerate that countryside from the desuetude and depression into which it had declined. Distrustful of reductionist science and mechanistic economics, Massingham championed what he perceived as the virtues of localism, organicism, the crafts and the culture of ‘peasant’ farming. In offering biographical details and in considering a range of his work, this article seeks to locate Massingham within the context of his times. Moreover, despite the criticism of his contemporary detractors who regarded his preaching of traditional values in husbandry, craft and land as escapist and antiquarian, the article concludes that many of Massingham's writings foreshadow twenty-first century concerns for organic holism, sustainability, food quality and environmental issues.

The results show that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a decrease in income for the Toraja Weaving handicraft business of the Unnoni Group which has also affected the performance of the business. The chain of Covid-19 distribution has resulted in the Toraja people having to stop all their activities, especially at the rambu tuka' and rambu solo' events which usually make their weaving crafts much in demand by buyers, but because of this, there are no orders for cloth and it creates business income. weaving craftsmen decreased and hampered the business.

The paper presents the results of the survey carried out by the authors of this paper, the subject of which was experimental archaeology. We asked a group of artisans that deal with historical reconstruction a set of questions about the difficulties they encounter during their reconstruction work. What is their biggest problem? Where do the craftsmen derive information about the ancient technology from? How are their products received by recipients? The chronological framework of the reconstruction industry was narrowed down to one historical period (the time of the Przeworsk culture, that is the Pre-Roman Iron Age, the Roman Iron Age and Migration Period). This clearly showed some connections between a small group of craftsmen using ancient methods in their work and the academic world, and how important it is to acquire historical and archaeological knowledge and to find ethnographic inspirations in order to solve the problems of craft techniques. The survey covered artisans practising various crafts, from metalwork to pottery, which added a broader perspective to the issues studied.

Pottery-making is one of the oldest crafts deeply rooted with India’s rich cultural heritage. Nohar, a town in Rajasthan and a rich pottery centre is renowned for unique pottery styles. With the objective of assessing the socio-economic status of potters in Nohar and understanding the awareness about government initiatives like KSY and PMAY among the potter community, 56 potters were selected through purposive and snowball sampling and were personally interviewed. The study concludes that the majority of participants fall under lower middle group in Kuppuswamy Socioeconomic Status (SES) scale emphasizing the importance of tailored policies for socio-economic development. The dual role of potters engaging in agricultural activities and the migration to semi-rural settings indicates the craft's adaptability to changing lifestyles while preserving its traditional essence. Low awareness about the schemes like KSY and the PMAY indicates the need to enhance awareness and understand potential gaps in implementation.

Abstract This research is to study the paradigm and theories related to handicraft design, guidelines, culture and intellect, philosophical concepts, and the concept of promoting the direction of creativity to be used as specifications in the design and development of industrial crafts products. This research is qualitative research by interviewing the experts by conducting Individual Depth Interview and Focus Group using a purposive sampling method. The results are categorized concepts and theories to be used in analyzing and creating creativity correctly. Concepts and theories can be concluded in 4 elements as follow: 1.Understanding universal design (Style and needs in society) 2. It is feeling and believing in the roots of local wisdom and culture (Study of objects to understand cultures, set of beliefs, concepts and attitudes of the community or society when producing the objects that are necessary for education) 3.Learning the context of culture and wisdom of the community (the skills, techniques, and ability of people in the community) from Grounded Theory 4.Characteristics of change and continuity in the creation of handicraft (old as the world and new with appropriateness). The study of concepts and theories that are factors influencing the development and creation of industrial crafts is considered as a set of information which can be used in the development of industrial craft appropriately. Studying important principles and applying theories to use in the study and design guideline will narrow the concept of development or capture the main issues of the selection of conceptual data and the analysis of data to use appropriately. The four principles and theories above explain the process of getting the answer systematically.

This research focuses on the involvement of local communities as SMEs in the tourism sector in the coastal tourism area of Batam City. This study is based on the argument that MSMEs offer welfare to local communities and at the same time become an attraction in tourist destinations. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach with primary and secondary data collection. Primary data collection was carried out through focus group discussions and interviews with local governments and communities as MSME actors, as well as field observations in four coastal areas. While secondary data is collected through the collection of documents related to the research focus. The results of this study indicate that (1) local communities are still not optimally involved in becoming MSME actors in the tourism sector in coastal tourism areas, due to limited knowledge of exploiting economic opportunities (2) culinary potential, crafts and tourist attractions have the opportunity to be developed as attractions in the area coastal tourism in Batam City. Curation of culinary and craft products, as well as packaging of local culture as tourist attractions (3) local communities have limited access to local government programs related to human resource training and improving service quality at destinations. Tourism awareness groups in the four coastal tourism areas that were observed continue to work to mobilize local communities to get involved. Exploring the potential of culinary, craft and tourist attractions requires optimal local government involvement. The role of local government and local communities jointly synergizes in improving the quality of coastal tourism areas through the involvement of local communities as SMEs in the tourism sector. However, due to the changes affecting the social and economic aspects, the preservation and maintenance of crafts like Nora are crucial for sustainability. This article, which is part of a larger study on “Nora Bead Crafting: Cultural Capital and Creative Folklore”, is designed as analytical descriptive research with qualitative data analysis. The data for this study was collected using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions participated by Nora bead crafters in Muang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The findings revealed that Nora, a local performing art of the Southern part of Thailand, preserved and maintained the Nora identity and numerous belief systems. The crafters designed their products by changing the colours, shapes, and patterns and using the materials in stringing or embroidering the beads. The creation of the Nora beads in these new ways is considered a reproduction of culture in four aspects—production, dissemination, consumption, and reproduction.

The aim of this activity is to empower the youth of Gunung Megang village by promoting megalithic tourism culture and traditional food in Gunung Megang village by carrying out innovation and digitalization training. The community has a strong desire for entrepreneurship, so it needs to be facilitated to increase the productivity of crafts and the number of tourist visits. Efforts to increase these skills cannot be carried out independently by the people of Gunung Megang village, so the role of academics is to develop the traditional snacks and tourism industries. This activity has the urgency of encouraging a group of people to be able to adapt to technology. Currently, the people of Gunung Megang village have a lot of promotion of tourism attractions and local snacks, but the marketing of craft industry products and tourism potential has not been spread through advanced technology because it is still limited to direct information. Community service is produced as a result of more modern food packaging and social media accounts in the form of Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, which are expected to become media for promoting tourism resources in Gunung Megang village.

The systems of traditional intercommunal interaction, the peculiarities of settlement and the features of the ethno-territorial economic specialization of Setos that have developed over the centuries allow highlighting the most significant factors that are important for the preservation of their cultural identity. Currently, the territorial specificity of ethnocultural unity was strongly influenced by three factors: firstly, this is the division of the traditional territory of residence of the ethnic group by state borders, and the difficulties of cross-border interaction have significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and secondly, these are trends in demographic processes — depopulation and migration outflow from rural areas, thirdly, determined by changes in the economic and technological structure of the craft traditions of the ethnos to the needs of the tourism sector. The purpose of the study is to identify, systemize and substantiate modern forms of transmission from generation to generation of the traditions of Seto trades and crafts in conditions of territorial and partly social disunity of the ethnic group. The methods of socio-economic and cultural interaction within and outside the traditional territory of settlement of this ethnic group were also studied. It is important to identify the elements of the traditional culture of Seto that have retained their relevance in the modern way of life, and along with them — meaningfully new types of economic activity of local and network Seto ethnocultural communities.

Using a dialogical narrative approach, we explored how disabled people made sense of their gym experiences as part of a peer group. Interviews were conducted with 18 disabled people (10 men and 8 women, aged 23–60) who had experience exercising in the gym as part of a group. Data were rigorously analyzed using a dialogical narrative analysis. Within their peer group, participants crafted a collective story that they used to resist disablism in the gym. The dialogical components of the collective story functioned to (a) validate participants’ experiences of oppression in the gym, (b) forge an unspoken understanding with peers, (c) craft a more affirmative identity, and (d) instill a sense of empowerment in participants so that they can tell their own story. This study extends knowledge in the field of exercise and disability by showing that despite the oppression disabled people experienced in the gym, they can create a collective story, which is useful for helping to promote and sustain exercise in this space.

This research aims to determine the role of the NTT Dekranasda in empowering woven fabric craft groups. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with combined data collection techniques through interviews, observation, documentation and focus group discussions (FGD). The results of the research show that Dekranasda NTT has played a role in empowering woven fabric craft groups, including Dekranasda NTT acting as a motivator in human development and institutional development, a communicator in business development and institutional development, and a dynamist in business development and institutional development. However, in carrying out its role, Dekranasda NTT experienced several obstacles, including limited capital to carry out woven fabric craft development activities again and obstacles faced by craft groups, namely lack of capital and raw materials in the weaving process, resulting in delays in every activity. Craft groups still need to issue business permits and copyrights for each of their businesses and weavings; this could be a waste of money for anyone who is not responsible for plagiarizing the weaving that the craft group has weaved.

AbstractRecent efforts to ensure the survival of cultural diversity in a globalized world have led to efforts to preserve, revitalize, and continue craft traditions in marginal communities. This article records an effort to support the distinctive Dai culture in the province of Yunnan, China, by first establishing an archive of documents, photographs, and oral records of the traditions of a Dai community in the county of Menglian and following that by reviving and expanding the traditional weaving carried out by Dai women. It shows the complexity of this kind of activity, the need to encourage younger members of the community to learn the distinctive techniques of weaving and to develop a niche market for its products. Group crafts and traditions have often developed and varied over centuries; further adaptations may be needed to restore viability. Reinstatement of quality improved its value by adopting wider looms, better dyeing techniques, higher quality thread, and by encouraging new creative efforts in the development of the final product, thus providing better economic returns to the weavers and the community in general. In providing an exemplary process for isolated and dispirited communities to improve their economic circumstances and reinvigorate their ethnic traditions, it demonstrates the significant contribution that nongovernmental organizations can make to this kind of work.
