Moltesen, Mette, Marjatta Nielsen und Annette Rathje, Hrsg. Approaches to Ancient Etruria. Museum Tusculanum Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55069/llw75521.

Annotation:
‘Approaches to Ancient Etruria’ covers a wide range of topics within the legacy of the Etruscans – material and immaterial. Through close examination of the visible we gain insight into the questions of social and cultural identities, and broader questions lead to new interpretations and hypotheses. In fifteen articles, scholars from Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark present recent work on a broad range of Etruscan issues. Contributions include a settlement study and a detailed work on architectural mouldings, and they provide insights into religious practices, burial customs, funerary art, portraiture and social relations, deduced from epigraphical testimonia. Several articles deal with imagery in tombs, tomb paintings, bronze reliefs etc. – one presenting a new hypothesis on the scenes on the Tragliatella oinochoe, another examining the ‘Magistratensarkophag’ from Tomba dei Sarcofagi in Cerveteri – while others explore space in tombs or invite the reader to experience images of nature or imagine Etruscan music. Two contributions deal with objects in the Etruscan Collection created by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen during his extended sojourn in Rome (1797–1838). The introduction includes a useful overview of Etruscan studies and Etruscan collections in Denmark.

Jahoda, Christian, und Christiane Kalantari, Hrsg. Early West Tibetan Buddhist Monuments. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/978oeaw87776.

Annotation:
This edited volume with 16 original contributions is devoted to early, 10th–13th-century Buddhist monuments of historical Western Tibet. The results are, on the one hand, based on in-depth interdisciplinary field studies in Ladakh, Spiti, Kinnaur, Tsamda und Purang (today partly on Chinese, partly on Indian territory), on the other hand on the critical edition and analysis of hitherto unknown or inaccessible historiographical texts, among others of works by Guge Paṇḍita Drakpa Gyaltsen (1415–1486/98), which are dedicated partly to the foundation phase of the West Tibetan kingdom and the royal monk Yeshe Ö (947–1019), the leading religio-political figure in Western Tibet in the 10th/11th century. Preceded by an outline of macro-historical developments in Western Tibet from the 7th to the 15th century, the studies focus on the archaeology, architecture, art history and foundation phase of the monastery of Nyarma (10th century) (Ladakh), in addition on stelae in Purang and Tsamda dating to the 9th and 10th centuries, newly discovered murals at Tabo monastery in Spiti, illuminated Prajñāpāramitā MSS from Tabo and Pooh (in Upper Kinnaur), as well as wall-paintings and accompanying inscriptions in the Zhag cave temple (Tsamda) from the 13th century. This volume contributes significantly to the wider and deeper understanding of the religious, cultural, political and social developments of the entire West Tibetan language area, in particular during the formative phases of the West Tibetan kingdom from the 10th to the 13th centuries.

Annotation:
Bob Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as “Bob Dylan,” renewing the performance possibilities inherent in his songs, from acoustic folk, to electric rock and a late, hybrid style which even hints at so-called world music and Latin American tones. Then in 2016, his achievements outside of performance – as a songwriter – were acknowledged when he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize. Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, taking in painting, film, acting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. This volume consists of multidisciplinary essays written by cultural historians, musicologists, literary academics and film experts, including contributions by critics Christopher Ricks and Nina Goss. Together, the essays reveal Dylan’s continuing artistic development and self-fashioning, as well as the making of a certain legitimized Dylan through critical and public recognition in the new millennium. This volume seeks to reflect the range of Bob Dylan’s multiple activities, the ‘late style’ of his creativity and his personae in all their later variety, from the Time Out of Mind album (1997) up to the release in March 2020 of ‘Murder Most Foul’. Bob Dylan (born 1941) is perhaps best-known as a singer and songwriter whose major impact occurred several decades ago. His achievements as a songwriter and master of language were – provocatively? – acknowledged when he was awarded the 2016 Nobel Literature Prize. However, Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, especially through intermediality, taking in painting, film, acting, radio-presenting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production, either reinforcing or calling into question his perceived authenticity. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. Chronicles, Volume One, his autobiography, charts his beginnings as a folk singer and the later recording of the Oh Mercy album. In terms of his identity as a visual artist, while Dylan’s Revisionist Art exhibition focused on his reworkings of magazine covers, the Brazil Series paintings show him extending his visual creativity to cultural spaces beyond the United States. Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as ‘Bob Dylan’.
