Utilitarians believe that personal decisions and public policies should be made so as to maximize the public good, or, as Jeremy Bentham put it, to produce the greatest good of the greatest number. Bentham identified the public good with the maximization of happiness, and believed that many traditional practices were inimical to the production of happiness. So in the name of maximizing the public good, Bentham advocated, for example, extending the franchise, reforming the criminal code and re-designing prisons. People's prejudices and traditional habits of thought must yield in the face of utilitarian-inspired reforms.

This paper examines the strategy undertaken by the conservative climate sceptic countermovement to counter the scientific consensus on human caused climate change. It focuses on revealing the power of the discursive production of knowledge by conservative actors in spreading misinformation to the media, powerful institutions, and the public. The paper examines the reasons behind this strategy and argues that, apart from economic reasons, both historical and ideological factors within conservatism can help explain this behavior. Lastly, the paper discusses, in a theoretical sense, whether conservatism can ever be reconciled with a conservation of the climate, and, in a practical sense, obstacles, such as climate skeptical discourses, for a conservative pro-climate movement to succeed politically.

The wide range of wildlife tracking and surveillance technologies (radio and satellite tracking, cameras, and audio) that are being deployed in conservation have important implications for a geographical understanding of care for non-human nature. This report explores four dimensions of their influence. First, their detailed view of spatial dimensions of non-human lives affects conservation’s demarcation and control of space. Second, the application of surveillance technologies to people is central to the rise of coercive conservation strategies. Third, such technologies enable the creation and commoditization of spectacular nature. Fourth, spatial digital data enables the automation of conservation decisions, a trend described here as ‘conservation by algorithm’.

Updated notions about the so-called hygiene hypothesis consider now that helminths may have influence in the training of the immune system during childhood. Considering the similar type of immune response between helminth infections and allergic illnesses, the objective of this study was to evaluate how structural and functional conservation between house-dust mite allergens and their helminth orthologs might contribute to the cross-induction of IgE responses in allergies and helminthiasis. Amino acid sequences from group-1, -2, -5, -9, -10, -18, -21, and -23 allergens of the house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus were retrieved from curated databases, and orthologs were identified in other mite species and different helminth parasites. We also assessed structural, conservational, functional, and immunologic relationships between these major mite allergens and their helminth counterparts. De novo 3D-modelling, B-cell epitopes prediction, structural conservation, and docking analyses were analyzed by Robetta platform, ElliPro and CBTope, RaptorX, and Z-Dock, respectively. Our results extend previous findings on structural conservations between major allergens and parasite proteins and show that these conservations go beyond the well-known conservations and may account for the observed immunological cross-reactions. This understanding can contribute in the near future to the development of more specific serological testing for mite-induced allergies and helminthiasis.

UNNES crowned a conservation university. The vision of UNNES to 2040 became an internationally reputable and conservation university. Conservation means the effort to protect and preserve the value of culture and human behavior in interacting with the environment. The research objectives reveal the integration of conservation values in UNNES campus habituation. The study used a qualitative case study design. Data collection using observations, documentation, and interviews. Testing the validity of data using the triangulation of sources, techniques, and theories, using the social action theory Talcott Parsons and the personality theory of Gordon Allport. Data analysis uses the Miles and Huberman models through three stages; Data reduction, data presentation, and data verification, as well as Spradley's taxonomy analysis. The results of the integration strategy of conservation values in the habituation of UNNES campus are conducted through academic and non-academic activities. Through academic activities, it is seen from the planting of conservation values through conservation education, environmental education, and other courses. While through non-academic activities are seen with the planting of conservation values through UPT conservation development activities, student activity units, and the Student Activities Center. The student personality has been conservative seen from the conservative behavior of college students, habituation to be a strategy to embed conservation values. With this, the student's behavior is closely related to the conservation character he has, so it can reflect the actions that have been performed by the role of instilling the conservation values of UNNES.

City becomes conservation-worthy by being a cultural setting. Heritage city, once conserved, shall facilitate the continuous evolution of the city culture. Traditio11ally, urban conservation was considered as preserving the physical fabric of a few monumental structures of a city, representing either a building type or an architect. This, compartmentalising the urban space, turning it in to an open-air museum, and replacing some sub-societies with more influential ones, did not facilitate the continuity of the unified image of the city. The result has been the degradation of city life. Our research proposition for urban conservation is to strengthen the container-quality of urban space by protecting the unique image which facilitates dwelling in the city. We interpret urban conservation as strengthening the container quality of urban space by achieving the equilibrium between continuity of heritage values and change ofliving needs. Similar ideas in the works of Sir Patrick Geddes and his disciples can be found. His concept, conservative surgery, guides us to see such equilibrium between change and continuity. This paper, based on a literature review, attempts to revisit this concept.

Spring conservation require serious concern on the economic advantages for the society. Without economic advantages achieved from the conservation activities, the conservation programme should face intense conflict of land utilization. Plantation of economically valuable conservative plant species is one of the proposed solution to overcome the problem. This research aimed to identify the economic value of conservative plant species found in “Sendang Kalimah Toyyibah” surrounding. Research was conducted through field observation involving 4 line transects and 4 square transects at each line with transect size of 20 m x 20 m. Plant identification was conducted for tree strata. Data analysis was including diversity, evenness and importance index of respective plants. Economic valuation was conducted through literature study. The result showed there were 28 plants species availabile in “Sendang Kalimah Toyyibah” surrounding. Among the plant species 22 of the had been identified to provide conservative function, while 6 of them weren’t including Banana, Papaya, Melinjo, Pangi, Longan and Stink Bean. Instead of providing conservative function, most plants also provide economic advantages including wood, fruit, flower, bud, leaf, fibre, sugar, peel and bean products while only 3 of them were not identified including Banyan, Manila Tamarind and Amboyna Wood. Plantation of economically valuable conservative plant species is recommended to support the conservation of the spring as well as to provide economic advantage for the society. In this article, the space-time conservation element and solution element scheme is extended to simulate the unsteady compressible two-phase flow in pipes. The model is non-conservative and the governing equations consist of three equations, namely, two mass conservation equations for each phase and one mixture-momentum equation. In the third equation, the non-conservative source term appears, which describes the sum of gravitational and frictional forces. The presence of source term and two mass conservation equations in considered model offers difficulties in developing the accurate and robust numerical techniques. The suggested space-time conservation element and solution element numerical scheme resolves the volume-contact discontinuities efficiently. Furthermore, the modified central upwind scheme is also extended to solve the same two-phase flow model. The number of test problems is considered, and the results obtained by space-time conservation element and solution element scheme are compared with the solutions of modified central upwind scheme. The numerical results show better performance of the space-time conservation element and solution element method as compare to the modified central upwind scheme.
