In this study we have examined young consumers thoughts and opinions regarding how green marketing is used in the fast fashion industry. Previous studies in the topics of fast fashion shows that the concept is increasing at the same time as the demand for sustainable products are greater than ever before. Companies uses green marketing in order to meet the demand for sustainable products, but green marketing is often used in a wrong way and products are marketed as more green than they are. We wanted to see consumers understanding of green marketing campaigns from fast fashion companies and how they perceive "green" in messages. Also thoughts and opinions about sustainability strategies and green products have been discussed in order to meet our purpose to see how young consumers perceive green marketing in the fast fashion context? Our study is based on a qualitative research and two focus groups were used for the collecting of empirical data. A previous field study about consumers responsibility toward fast fashion has additionally has been used as both inspiration to the chosen topic and the results has been used for problem discussion and in the discussion chapter in this study. The theoretical framework contains of the parts fast fashion, consumer behaviour, sustainability, green marketing and green campaigns. All parts are chosen to its relevance to the issue and are discussed from a fashion perspective. Results from our study shows that young consumers in age of 20 to 30 years old don't perceive green marketing. The connection between fast fashion and green marketing is unclear and consumers don't relate fast fashion with sustainability. Young consumers low knowledge about green marketing and sustainability in the fast fashion context is a reason why they don't care about the environment when buying clothes. Our study further shows that consumers associates sustainable collections with limited assortments, unattractive and expensive products and therefore prefer other products. Finally this study shows that consumers want green marketing to communicate a clearer message to understand the advantages of buying green.

Energy conscious design should become an inherent part of the design process. This study shall present energy conscious guidelines in a format that can be integrated into the decision-making process. The three elements which can be manipulated through this design process are outlined to provide a source of reference for the designer. The passive solar energy systems, the landscaping, and the building form allow an integration and optimization of their inherent components to achieve energy conscious design. The material is specifically formatted to appeal to the designer's need to quickly locate the material and then to easily review its contents. An outline format is maintained throughout the study that remains concise in presentation with abundant references to illustrations. This study does not attempt to fully educate the user on the subjects presented, nor is all the information contained herein. These guidlines attempt to provide a basis for energy conscious design in the decision-making process and to encourage the designer to become more versed in these areas.

Companies are under increasing pressure to deal with environmental concerns during product design, for it is the design process which primarily decides the environmental impact of a manufactured product over its life. Tools which assist in taking a life cycle view of the product are a necessary support to designers. Prime amongst these tools is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However, a major criticism of LCA methodologies is that while they provide advice on environmentally superior product designs, they do not provide guidance on the economic impact. With product take back increasingly likely to become the responsibility of producer companies attention is now being paid to the later phases of a products life, such as maintenance and disposal costs. A new methodology is shown to be required to complement LCA, one which considers the economic implications of environmentally superior designs over the whole product life. It is argued that a major challenge of such a methodology will be how it deals with the uncertainty associated with the future. The research provides a review of product life cycle design methodologies and a critique of existing approaches to uncertainty. A design teams requirements for decision support that deals with product economic life cycle uncertainty is presented and a decision support methodology which meets these requirements is described. The methodology builds upon the theory of life cycle costing. In practice, the methodology integrates a computer based life cycle model with statistical techniques to quantify the contribution of life cycle variables. In bringing these proven but previously separate tools together the method resolves the issue of uncertainty in a novel and acceptable way. Through the use of an in-depth industrial case study, it is shown that the methodology provides practical support to the design team to produce economically superior product life cycle designs.

The environment has emerged as an important determinant of the performance of the modern chemical industry. Process engineering in the 21st century needs to evolve to include environmental issues as part of the design objectives, rather than as constraints on operations. A frequently cited objection to the use of quantitative indicators of environmental performance in product and process design is that the underlying data are too uncertain for the numbers to have any real meaning. This thesis demonstrates that explicit incorporation of uncertainties allows bounds to be established on the confidence of decisions made on the basis of uncertain indicators. The examples provided show that large uncertainties in indicators used to assess environmental performance do not necessarily imply uncertainty in decision-making. A series of computer-aided decision making tools have been developed to decrease the barriers to the use of environmental valuation functions in routine design activities. These tools include: uncertainty propagation of relative performance measures, a spreadsheet-based fate, transport and exposure model for chemicals, an information content chart for assessing the quality of uncertain indicators, a screening procedure to identify the most important structural and parametric uncertainties in multimedia exposure models,
a process by product input-output life cycle assessment method to generate correlated distributions of unit environmental indicators, an extension of the deterministic equivalent modeling method for the generation of spreadsheet based polynomial chaos expansion metamodels of process flowsheet models, and a database for managing uncertain parameters used in environmental valuation models. Case studies are presented to help the reader in learning the use of the tools. The tools are also applied to an analysis of the U.S. toxics release inventory, in which confidence bounds are developed for the trends in impacts and the contributions of industrial sectors and specific chemical compounds to overall potential impact. Although the tools were developed bearing in mind the need for methods to evaluate the environmental performance of chemical process design alternatives, the ideas can be applied to any decision context in which there are significant uncertainties in the parameters of the objective function.

The problem addressed in this research was to develop an approach for the simultaneous green design of products and associated manufacturing processes including demanufacturing concerns. We propose a generic approach called Integrated Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing (IECDM) which can be applied to address problems in the ECDM domain. IECDM incorporates environmental considerations into the engineering design process, thereby increasing a product's total life-cycle value (including its end-of-life value) as experienced by the customer, manufacturer, and society, while simultaneously reducing impacts on the environment caused by that product and its manufacturing processes. IECDM is a novel integration of Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), Multiple Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM), and Cost-Benefit Assessment (CBA). The focus is on process, based on modification of the traditional QFD methodology to incorporate environmental issues and green product-design decisions through the life cycle design activities of synthesis, analysis, and evaluation. This dissertation presents a QFD-based IECDM approach, a mathematical CBA model, and an IDDS (Integrated Design Decision-Support) framework with a design-flow-chart application for incorporating environmental criteria into product and process eco-design. The IECDM problem is defined as: given the customer and environmental requirements, develop an integrated approach for green product design that results in maximization of the product's total life-cycle value (TLCV). Initially. through investigation in the field of ECDM, we specified a clear ECDM domain within Industrial Ecology. Then. we proposed various state-of-the-art techniques that were used to implement ECDM in the literature. After we defined the IECDM problem. we developed an integrated approach that led to a generic QFD-IECDM methodology for dealing with problems in the ECDM domain. Finally, for implementing the proposed methodology, we developed a tentative IODS framework to encourage long-term development followed by an example.

Environmental concerns are now firmly on the agenda for engineers and designers. In recent years an increasing barrage of legislation accompanied by the public's increasing awareness of, and concern for, the environment is forcing industry to respond. Energy and resource consumption reduction have long been the concerns of industry but this narrow view is no longer appropriate with much more complex life-cycle environmental issues such as design for disassembly and environmentally conscious processing becoming apparent. In response many tools have been developed in recent years to assist engineers and designers in their attempts to address the emerging environmental problems. The most universally adopted is that of Life-Cycle Analysis or LCA. This procedure assesses the complete life-cycle environmental burdens of product or system with a view to evaluating and implementing opportunities to effect improvements. The initial stages of LCA which include initiation, inventory and impact assessment are well developed disciplines and standardised frameworks are appearing. However the improvement stage of LCA, in which changes in design are considered is currently an active field of investigation as attempts are made to develop efficient and reliable methods. The integration of LCA principles into current design and materials selection procedures, and thus completion of the improvement stage, is a task which needs addressing. Methods exist in the form of frameworks, guidelines, matrices and computer based tools, but all have drawbacks and 'blind spots'.This research looks at the problems facing designers and engineers both in terms of environmental concerns and the logistics of integrating these new concerns into current product development practices. Environmental problems are reviewed and responsibilities and possible solutions are identified. Environmental analysis procedures are explained and the process of LCA is studied in detail. The development of environmental design is discussed which leads to the presentation of the possibilities for integration of Design for the Environment (DFE) into current practices. Through a critical review of current practices in environmental design the following important unfulfilled needs are identified: the difficulty in comparing different design options in environmental terms; providing guidance in identifying appropriate product design strategies for different products; helping to train/advise engineers and designers in the use of environmentally sound products and materials and the development of tools which actively offer advice to designers and engineers. In fulfilling these needs this research presents a contribution to knowledge in the field of environmentally conscious design and manufacture in three ways: Development of a novel matrix-based method of environmental design; Integration of environmental concerns into the materials selection process, and, The development of a computer support tool for environmentally conscious design andmanufacture. Validation of the research is presented through examples and the conduction of a user survey. Finally this thesis summarises the conclusions drawn from the research and identifies areas of further work which will increase the knowledge base, scope and applicability of the work carried out.

This research has explored environmentally conscious design in the electrical/electronics industry sector. In this new and rapidly evolving field, existing research has not yet sought to understand the causes of success and the problems experienced when companies have integrated environmental considerations into the design process. In the context of advanced practitioners of environmentally conscious design in the Western European and North American electrical/electronics industry sector, it is shown that: - the timing of environmental decisions in the design process is key to environmentally conscious design; - the environmental profile of a product is affected the most in the very early stages of the design process, particularly in the pre-specification stage, where tools for environmentally conscious design decision-making are lacking; - an enthusiastic approach, driven by an environmental champion, is key to environmentally conscious design; - top management commitment is important for successful environmentally conscious design; - there is a common sequence of events that many companies go through when integrating environmentally conscious design into their product development processes. This starts with motivation, leading to widening communication and information flows and finally to whole-life thinking. These findings emerged from one in-depth study and a transatlantic industry survey, interviewing twenty four practitioners. A framework of factors affecting environmentally conscious design was derived from this research and a model of environmentally conscious design integration developed which describes the industry's experience of integrating environmental considerations into the design processes.

Purpose - This paper aims to investigate how green product design has been practiced within the Swedish furniture industry. Furthermore, to investigate how green product design can reduce the negative impact on the environment. Theoretical framework - The literature used to serve as a base for this paper includes some aspects concerning Green Supply Chain Management, but fundamentally concerns green or environmentally conscious design, motivators for designing „green‟ products, such as legislation, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), internal policy documents and/or green guidelines/certificates, innovation, competitiveness, economic performance, brand image and reputation, and others. Consequently, factors for product design itself were discussed, such as environmentally conscious design, efficient utilization of materials, minimizing waste, time and cost efficiency, types of materials used, etc. Moreover, sustainability aspects are considered vital, namely economic, social and environmental practices, as particular attention is paid to the economic and environmental aspects. Methodology - For the purpose of this research paper, (multiple) case studies were chosen to be implemented. One face-to-face, two telephone and two Skype/online interviews were conducted based on semi-structured interview questions. The data collected is from four companies, two of them preferred to remain anonymous, i.e. Office Furniture and Office Design, and the other two were Kinnarps and Skandiform. Findings - The empirical findings gathered for this research comply with the majority of theoretical data provided. A number of the most important and applicable green product design factors, and more specifically the aim of reducing negative environmental impacts, drive companies to implement environmentally conscious design, efficient utilization of materials, minimizing waste, costs associated, types of materials used, product safety, among many others. Furthermore, economic, social and environmental (overall regarded as sustainability for the purpose of this paper) factors are taken into consideration. Economic and environmental issues were mostly discussed and pinpointed as essential. Conclusions - Green product design should follow a number of important factors in order to reduce the negative impacts on the environment. It is essential to understand a company‟s motivation for designing green products. Nevertheless, such factors as well as economic aspects regarding green design should be complementing each other.

In recent years, the drive for ever increasing energy efficiency has intensified. The main driving forces behind this development are the increased innovation and adoption of mobile battery powered devices, increasing energy costs, environmental concerns, and strive for denser systems.

This work is meant to serve as a foundation for exploration of energy conscious software. We present an overview of previous work and a background to energy concerns from a software perspective. In addition, we describe and test a few methods for decreasing energy consumption with emphasis on using software parallelism. The experiments are conducted using both a simulation environment and real hardware. Finally, a method for measuring energy consumption on a hardware platform is described.

We conclude that energy conscious software is very dependent on what hardware energy saving features, such as frequency scaling and power management, are available. If the software has a lot of unnecessary, or overcomplicated, work, the energy consumption can be lowered to some extent by optimizing the software and reducing the overhead. If the hardware provides software-controllable energy features, the energy consumption can be lowered dramatically.

For suitable workloads, using parallelism and multi-core technologies seem very promising for producing low power software. Realizing this potential requires a very flexible hardware platform. Most important is to have fine grained control over power management, and voltage and frequency scaling, preferably on a per core basis.

Within the design community, a growing number of researchers have shown interest in extending the value context to include design, such that designers focus on maximizing the 'value' of the product or service, rather than simply satisfying a set of requirements. Thus, by applying a value-driven approach to design, the design community hopes to show that the magnitude of cost and schedule overruns may be reduced, or even eliminated. However, a common criticism of value-driven approaches is that they are difficult to implement, and not sufficiently pragmatic to be used for large scale engineering problems. Further, some argue that less rigorous methods appear to provide reasonable results in practice, and so rigor is not necessary. To reconcile these disparate viewpoints, it must be shown that value-driven approaches contribute to the design process, and can be implemented in practice at a reasonable cost. In response, I propose that the cause for the lack of practicality in value-driven approaches is attributable to the lack of well established and verified methods and tools. This dissertation presents research that attempts to address this deficiency by first developing a better understanding of effectiveness for methods that seek to enable value-driven design. This investigation leads to a concise set of desired characteristics for methods for guiding the development of value-models which then motivate the creation of a Systematic Method for Developing Value Models (SMDVM). To evaluate the SMDVM, it is applied to the design and retrofit of buildings for energy efficiency. A simulation workbench is developed as a tool to automate the development and analysis of value models for building design and retrofit contexts. The workbench enables architects, engineers, and other practitioners to easily incorporate uncertainty into analyses of building energy consumption, as part of a value-driven approach to design and retrofit.

A rake receiver, which resolves multipath signals corrupted by a fading channel, is the most complex and power consuming block of a modem chip. Therefore, it is essential to design a rake receiver be efficient in hardware and power. We investigated a design of a rake receiver for the WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) system, which is a third generation wireless communication system. Our rake receiver design is targeted for mobile units, in which low-power consumption is highly important. We made judicious judgments throughout our design process to reduce the overall circuit complexity by trading with the performance. The reduction of the circuit complexity results in low power dissipation for our rake receiver. As the first step in the design of a rake receiver, we generated a software prototype in MATLAB. The prototype included a transmitter and a multipath Rayleigh fading channel, as well as a rake receiver with four fingers. Using the software prototype, we verified the functionality of all blocks of our rake receiver, estimated the performance in terms of bit error rate, and investigated trade-offs between hardware complexity and performance. After the verification and design trade-offs were completed, we manually developed a rake receiver at the RT (Register Transfer) level in VHDL. We proposed and incorporated several schemes in the RT level design to enhance the performance of our rake receiver. As the final step, the RT level design was synthesized to gate level circuits targeting TSMC 0.18 mm CMOS technology under the supply voltage of 1.8 V. We estimated the performance of our rake receiver in area and power dissipation. Our experimental results indicate that the total power dissipation for our rake receiver is 56 mW and the equivalent NAND2 circuit complexity is 983,482. We believe that the performance of our rake receiver is quite satisfactory.

Abstract The main objective of this research was to develop practical tools with which it is possible to improve the environment, micro-climate and energy economy of buildings and plans in different climate zones, and take the climate change into account. The parts of the study are: – State of art study into existing know-how about climate and planning. – Study of the effects of climate change on the built environment. – Development of simple micro-climate, nature and built environment analysis methods. – Defining the criteria of an acceptable micro-climatic environment. – Development of the wind test blower. – Presenting ways to interpret test results and draw conclusions. – Development of planning and design guidelines for different climate zones. An important part of the research is the development of the CASE wind test instrument, different wind simulation techniques, and the methods of observing the results. Bioclimatic planning and architectural design guidelines for different climate zones are produced. The analyse tools developed give a qualitative overall view, which can be deepened towards a quantitative analyse with wind testing measurements and roughness calculations. No mechanical rules are suggested, but complementary viewpoints and practices introduced to a normal planning process as well as improvement of consultative knowledge. The “method” is that there is no strict mechanical method, but a deeper understanding of bioclimatic matters. Climate-conscious planning with the developed CASE method, make it possible to design a better micro-climate for new or old built-up areas. Winds can be used in to ventilate exhaust fumes and other pollutants, which improves the quality of air and the healthiness of the urban environment. The analyses and scale-model tests make it possible to shield cold windy areas and to diminish the cooling effect of wind on facades. According to studies in Scandinavian countries this will bring energy savings of 5–15 per cent. The method can be used to: – Evaluation of the cooling effect of wind. Areas and facades exposed to wind. – Evaluation of the wind comfort at the pedestrian level. Windy areas, relative wind speeds. – Enhancing wind-forced ventilation. Positive and negative pressures at the inlets and outlets. – Analysis of the diffusion of pollutants. Ventilation of streets and areas. – Avoiding the damages caused by wind. Planning and designing wind protective solutions. – Characterisation of the wind loading of small and medium-size street architecture items. Designing wind resistant and protective items and plantings. – Analysing the drifting of snow. Placing of snow fences
– Arvioida tuulen vaikutusta jalankulun mukavuuteen. Tuuliset alueet ja suhteelliset tuulennopeudet. – Tehostaa painovoimaista ilmanvaihtoa. Positiiviset ja negatiiviset paineet ilmastoinnin sisäänmeno- ja ulostuloaukoissa. – Analysoida saasteiden leviämistä. Katujen ja alueiden tuulettaminen. – Torjua tuulen aiheuttamia tuhoja. Kaavoittaa ja suunnitella tuulelta suojaavia ratkaisuita. – Luonnehtia pieniin ja keskikokoisiin ulkona oleviin rakenteisiin kohdistuvia tuulikuormia. Suunnitella tuulenkestäviä ja suojaavia rakennelmia ja istutuksia. – Analysoida lumen kinostumista. Lumiaitojen sijoittelu

Background: The fashion industry today is one of constant and unceasing change. It is a segment of materialism, characterised by fast-paced and outsourced production, cost pressed profit structures, and never ending designs and trends. This framework together with modern day marketing communications that unremittingly stimulate new consumer wants have created a landscape of overconsumption. As a reaction to this hysteria of consumerism is the emergence of a relatively new notion, slow fashion. This ideology places emphasis on decelerating both production and consumption cycles through more conscious purchasing patterns. Previous studies confirm that although consumers are accepting of the slow fashion mind-set, their interest does not necessarily equate to engagement in terms of conscious consumption. Consequently, companies today are seeking alternative modes of communication such as storytelling. Purpose: The objective of this paper is; thus, to investigate how slow fashion is being communicated through storytelling, in better understanding how to engage consumers in more conscious and responsible fashion consumption. Method: The study uses a qualitative method of research with a deductive approach. The research design entails multiple case studies of semi-structured interviews conducted among four slow fashion companies in Sweden. Theoretical data has been collected primarily through peer reviewed literature and other written works in electronic form. The theoretical starting point of the paper begins with concepts such as slow fashion as an ideology and its values, goals and objectives. Thereafter, storytelling, engagement and meaning are each theoretically explained and empirically investigated. Conclusion: The study reveals that slow fashion retailers are using storytelling but to varying degrees in communicating the slow fashion ideology. There is a focus on engaging consumers through education, interaction and activating several human senses. It can be seen that consumers are engaged and interested in the slow fashion mind-set; however, it cannot be confirmed that they are actually behaving or acting as slow fashionists.

In a hard real-time system, the notion of time is very critical. For this reason, specific designing methods and different scheduling algorithms were developed. However, the scheduling algorithms are dependent on task attributes that are artifacts from system design, and the designers still do generate them by a trial and error process. [SH96] presents a resource conscious design method to systematically generate these attributes so that the task deadlines and the system end-to-end constraints are met. Using this method and the Rate Monotonic scheduling algorithm, I developed a tool that calculates the response time of each task of the system and a per-constraint heuristic parameter called "gain". Furthermore, it allows the designer to interactively change the timing attributes and to quickly check their effect on the system schedulability.

The aim of this thesis is to study social responsibility and find out what responsibilities the graphic designer may have and what they can do using their skill set as a designer to contribute in helping to better their community. Social responsibility needs to be addressed more within the design field. It needs to be introduced and taught to students at an early stage of their education, so as they fully understand the power and influence that their creations will have over society, and the role this plays in materialism, overconsumption and our modern day consumer-culture. Change needs to be made within graphic design and the urgency for this grows more and more for each day that passes. The graphic designer needs to critically reflect over the purpose of their work and answer the question of whom it stands to serve: their audience or consumer-culture. They need to move away from the creation of artificial needs and the promotion of unnecessary products, and move towards the creation of more useful and lasting communication that contributes to society.

With the increasing complexity of building design and performance evaluation, computational tools must be reconsidered to facilitate better solar design and application. The aim of this research is to demonstrate how reverse computation can play a significant role in building design. This approach has been used to explore a family of building design problems which deal with solar radiation falling on surfaces in obstructed situations and different locations. It was found that using the selected design tool (Ecotect), optimum solutions could be established for this family of problems based on reverse computation, starting with the performance requirements and leading to either a full range of tested solutions or simple optimum. The findings of this research are a first step in generating the form of buildings from climatic data and environmental performance constraints.

Environmental sustainability is becoming more popular in the building industry. Sustainable thinking needs to be present during the whole construction process, from the idea phase to the final stages. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate how end-bearing concrete and steel pipes as well as composite concrete-filled steel tube piles can be designed with greater consideration to climate impact. The purpose of this study is primarily to encourage awareness during the material choice phase in early stages of project planning. A Matlab code was programmed to perform a parametric study and analyze different parameters effect on pile bearing capacity. The structural bearing capacity of a number of different piles with various prerequisites were compiled in tables. The climate impact of the piles was expressed as global warming potential (GWP). In order to compare different pile types a functional unit was created as the ratio of the piles' bearing capacity and the corresponding climate impact. The ratio was calculated for all the piles and resulted in a number of figures with bearing capacity as a function of climate impact. These figures are supposed to be used as a basis to choose which pile type is most useful in a given situation. The usability of the results was verified with a calculation example. In the example, the figures were used to chose one pile out of several options as the most climate-efficient with the highest usage ratio. Finally, a number of general conclusions could be drawn regarding pile types. When the corrosion is small (<2 mm), it can be ascertained that steel pipes are to prefer over composite pipes. With larger corrosion (>2 mm), it can be ascertained that composite piles are preferable, specifically in cases were the soil is looser. However, in firmer soil, with undrained shear strength between 10-25 kPa, composite concrete-filled steel pipes are the better option. The results show that the contribution of the concrete to the bearing capacity of the composity files is minimal compared to the contribution of the decreased inner corrosion. This implies that it is more important to have the pipes filled with to prevent inner corrosion, rather than use a strong material that contributes to the bearing capacity. With that said, composite piles are not sustainable and different filling materials can be examined to further investigate whether there is another material with smaller climate impact that makes for piles with larger ratio of bearing capacity to climate impact. The main conclusion of the master thesis is that there needs to be a standardised approach to calculating climate impact from foundation construction and it should be included in a building's life cycle analysis (LCA).

Product tolerancing decisions made in product design have a significant effect on manufacturing environmental and cost performances by strongly influencing both the selection and operation of processing machinery. These decisions however are typically made without quantitative knowledge of their effects in manufacturing. With estimates of environmental and cost performances of manufacturing processes required to achieve specific part designs earlier in the product design cycle, designers may make more informed, and potentially better, design decisions with respect to manufacturing environmental and cost performance goals. In this thesis a method for quantifiably relating product tolerancing decisions to environmental and cost performances in manufacturing in order to provide decision support for cost and environmentally conscious design for manufacturing is developed. The method is instantiated as an Excel-based tool and exercised by two illustrative examples of increasing complexity, as well as a study of the manufacture of automotive transmission pinion gears with differing tolerance requirements. Uncertainty analysis is performed through the use of @RISK software; the uncertainty of parameters associated with manufacturing operations and machinery is captured through the use of probability density functions and Monte Carlo simulation is performed. Simulation results provide insight into the uncertainty of performance estimates and the risks associated with ensuing decision making. This method may be useful to product designers, as well as process planners, to support decision making efforts related to cost and environmental consciousness in the manufacturing phase of the product life cycle.

This hypothesis opens up the prospect of a transmedia type of mediation capable of integrating the objectives of scientific exploitation for the commitment and enhancement of participation and the attention that could be interesting for other corpuses. Based on an analysis framework focused on the beneficiaries of transactions, our survey highlighted different forms of hybrid transmedia engagement with specific characteristics. The complementarity of these transmedia has favoured various commitment regimes observed on an ad hoc basis for a long-term commitment

Initiatives that go beyond seeking only profit generation are gaining more space in the business environment, not only as parallel CSR projects, but also as their main strategy. These initiatives are related to the understanding of the important role of private initiative in transforming and solving current social problems. In this context, the Conscious Capitalism (CC) approach defines that the purpose of a business must go beyond generating profits and value to shareholders. There must be a central purpose for the company to exist. Another business approach that causes market shifts and breaks paradigms in the traditional corporate ecosystem is the evolution of platform business. In these organizations the interactions between two end users are commercialized and the added value for both parties needs to be clear in order to develop the necessary network. This dissertation unites these two approaches, with the purpose of proposing the configuration of a framework that will support entrepreneurs. In order to do so, the design research method was adopted, consisting of five steps (problem awareness, suggestion, development, evaluation and conclusion), which allows the construction and validation of an artifact. After the awareness of the problem and analysis of the literature, the first version of the framework was elaborated. The validation was divided into three phases, totaling 12 experts interviewed and each stage ending with a new version of the artifact. The final framework is comprised of a core that understands purpose, initiation of network development and financial support; four static quadrants: Technology, Conscious Management, Leadership and Network; in addition to elements divided into two levels of evolution within the quadrants that correspond to their areas of knowledge. It is understood that this study adds knowledge since it establishes a connection between the approaches of the platform business and Conscious Capitalism, exemplifying how this can occur and its transforming potential.

Loops are the main time-consuming part of numerical applications. The performance of the loops is limited either by the resources offered by the architecture or by recurrences in the computation. To execute more operations per cycle, current processors are designed with growing degrees of resource replication (replication technique) for memory ports and functional units. However, the high cost in terms of area and cycle time of this technique precludes the use of high degrees of replication. High values for the cycle time may clearly offset any gain in terms of number of execution cycles. High values for the area may lead to an unimplementable configuration. An alternative to resource replication is resource widening (widening technique), which has also been used in some recent designs in which the width of the resources is increased (i.e., a single operation is performed over multiple data). Moreover, several general-purpose superscalar microprocessors have been implemented with multiply-add fused floating point units (fusion technique), which reduces the latency of the combined operation and the number of resources used. On this thesis, we evaluate a broad set of VLIW processor design alternatives that combine the three techniques. We perform a technological projection for the next processor generations in order to foresee the possible implementable alternatives. From this study, we conclude that if the cost is taken into account, combining certain degrees of replication and widening in the hardware resources is more effective than applying only replication. Also, we confirm that multiply-add fused units will have a significant impact in raising the performance of future processor architectures with a reasonable increase in cost.

Sustainability has become a critical topic in all areas of supply chain management. As discussed earlier, drivers for this development can be identified as both internal and external phenomena. Since customers are one of the key stakeholders in supply chain management, special attention is paid to the impact of costumers´ behavior on sustainable supply chain design decisions. In this context, two main research questions were analyzed: 1.What is the appropriate way to design a supply chain according to environmentally-oriented requirements of customers? 2.What is the impact of customer´s behavior regarding both usage and return of products on supply chain design decisions in an environmentally conscious closed-loop supply chain environment? Therefore, three different optimization models with various main aspects are developed. To illustrate how the presented models can be applied in practical problem cases, guidelines for implementing an environmentally supply chain design project are presented

Recently, countries and society pay more and more attention to improve environment. For example, Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing and Product Recovery (ECMPRO) has become an obligation to the environment and enforced primarily by governmental regulations. RoHS (Restrictions on the use of certain Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) are set up in Europe, and it will affect the electronic industry especially in Taiwan. Considering environment issue, there are two commonly accepted primary objectives have been gaining momentum. One is creating environment products, and the other is developing techniques for product recovery and waste management. This research focuses on creating environment products. At designing product stage, designer consider many factors to gain the lowest time and cost. In traditionally, a designer estimates forward logistics issue and this research will extend the scope that includes reverse logistic. Propose of this research is building a decision support framework. Scheme of this research is developing a Set-based concurrent engineering approach for environment product design. SBCE seeks to regions of the design space, characterize boundaries of current capabilities and discover where these boundaries can be expanded. There are two benefits of applying SBCE. One is firms could get more competitively product alternative by intensifying competition between the design teams. The other is the unselected design alternatives can keep on record to reuse for future if business condition changes. This research will accord several steps to model this decision support framework with SBCE for environment-conscious product design. We will model the process according the product life cycle, and apply the Activity-based costing to calculate the cost. Finally, we simulate this model by Petri net and evaluate by TOPSIS.

In recent years, the microelectronic manufacturing grows rapidly. Process optimization to production yield is major focus of the industry. To meet the requirement in product miniaturization and multi-function, surface mount technology (SMT) and through-hole technology (THT) are used to assembly the double sided printed circuit board (PCB). In through-hole technology, the soldering carrier is commonly used to cover the component assembled on the first side. This is to avoid the component from being contact with the molten solder and fall off. However, using the carrier will increase the production costs. This study aims at a sound card and investigates the adhesive dispensing process to replace the necessity of carrier. The CEM-1 PCB material and the 0805 passive components are under consideration. The lead-free solder 58Bi/42Sn with low melting point is used in this research. This study consider the shear strength of components from both the horizontal and vertical directions at normal and high temperature. This is to simulate the effects of molten solder acting on the passive components. Thus, this study involves multi-quality characteristics. We used Taguchi method to investigate the effect of dispensing position, pressing time, curing temperature and the conveyor speed. The principal component analysis (PCA), principal component gray relational analysis and innovative artificial neural network are exercised to handle the multiple quality characteristics and determine the optimal process parameters. The result showed that the parameter determined by innovative artificial neural network parameters design is better than the others. The optimal process is implemented in the production line to verify its effectiveness.

In this research, the definition of Values-conscious game was discussed through the analysis of “Value at play project.” In addition, we investigated the method and possible designing-process to build a values-conscious game. Furthermore, the verification method of the consequence by playing values-conscious game was examined by the values-conscious game, Sovereignty, which was one of the result of this research. By applying two formal approaches, MDA framework and 6-11 framework, we investigated what pleasure the game participator could feel and the cause and composition of it. During the design-process of Sovereignty, we examined some famous published card games to clear out the particular mode of card games and the reaction stimulated from it. Moreover, by studying The Social Contract and the other article written by Liang Qichao in 1902, we defined the value-conscious of Sovereignty, which was inspired by recent social issues. After finishing the design of Sovereignty, some players were invited, including designers of board games, people who are interested in social issues and participator of social movements. Their impression of Sovereignty were inquired to verify the possibility and efficiency of the actual result of the value-conscious game.

As the network technology grows vigorously, more and more network interfaces are equipped with the portable devices. Surfing the Internet with the portable devices is already a part of modern''s life. However, while the users moved, the numerous networks interfaces must have the question of transmission range. The portable devices'' advantages bring up their shortcomings at the same time - Battery Lifetime, influence the users'' using time directly. So, how to achieve handoff without breaking transmission down and lengthen battery lifetime over heterogeneous networks are worth questions to think. In this thesis, we not only proposed an End-to-End mobility management scheme that enables users to handoff over heterogeneous networks but also had a CoolSpots power management scheme that helps users to save power with network devices, reach more efficiency. Via the experiments, handoff decision that we used can detect different network conditions and determine a vertical handoff or not. Handoff manager can support UDP handoff. And power saving decision can decide states with handoff manager. Power manager can reach power saving according to PSM of each network devices. We not only achieve handoff over heterogeneous networks but also save electric consumption of wireless devices up to 71%.

Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) provide the capability of evaluating uncertainty and variability of product use in addition to correlating the results with aspects of the usage context. Although energy consumption during use can cause a majority of a product's environmental impact, common practice is to neglect operational variability in life cycle inventories (LCIs). Therefore, the relationship between a product's usage context and its environmental performance is rarely considered in design evaluations. This dissertation demonstrates a method for describing the usage context as a set of factors and representing the usage context through a PGM. The application to LCIs is demonstrated through the use of a lightweight vehicle design example. Although replacing steel vehicle parts with aluminum parts reduces the weight and can increase fuel economy, the energy invested in production of aluminum parts is much larger than that of steel parts. The tradeoff between energy investment and fuel savings is highly dependent upon the vehicle fuel economy and lifetime mileage. The demonstration PGM is constructed from relating factors such as driver behavior, alternative driving schedules, and residential density with local conditional probability distributions derived from publicly available data sources. Unique scenarios are then assembled from sets of conditions on these factors to provide insight for sources of variance. The vehicle example demonstrated that implementation of realistic usage scenarios via a PGM can provide a much higher fidelity investigation of energy savings during use and that distinct scenarios can have significantly different implications for the effectiveness of lightweight vehicle designs. Scenarios with large families, for example, yield high energy savings, especially if the vehicle is used for commuting or stop-and-go traffic conditions. Scenarios of small families and efficient driving schedules yield lower energy savings for lightweight vehicle designs.

In the electronics manufacturing industry, the surface mount technology (SMT) and wave soldering process are used for the assembly of printed circuit board (PCBA). In the double sided printed circuit board (PCB), the soldering carrier is commonly used to cover the components on the first side. This is to avoid the component from being contact with the molten solder and falling off. However, using the carrier will increase the production costs. The adhesive dispensing process eliminates the necessity of carrier. The curing of adhesive and reflow soldering are performed simultaneously to improve the production efficiency. However, the curing of adhesive will further contribute to the greenhouse effect. This research uses a sound card as example and investigates the adhesive dispensing process to conserve energy and to reduce the emission of carbon-dioxide. The composite epoxy (CEM-1) PCB material and the 0805 passive components are under consideration. The lead-free solder 58Bi/42Sn and a low baking temperature adhesive are used in this research. Taguchi method is used to investigate critical factors such as adhesive, curing temperature, conveyor speed and the dispensing pressure that may influence the assembly reliability and the manufacturing cost. The performance indicators are adhesive shear strength and the corresponding expense to produce each PCB board. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), and the genetic algorithm based back propagation network model are exercised to handle the multiple quality characteristics problem and to determine the optimal process parameters. The results of confirmation test showed that the parameters determined by genetic algorithm based back propagation network model is better than the others. The optimal parameter are adhesive IR-130HF, curing temperature 140℃, conveyor speed 1.1m/min and the dispensing pressure 0.09Mpa. Finally, the optimal process is implemented in the production line to verify its effectiveness, showing that the PCB components drop rate decreased to 1.5%.

Annotation:
This thesis attempts to resolve the contradictory relationship between the ecological merits of wood construction and the significant material intensity of recent free form timber surface structures. The building industry is now adept in the design and construction of freeform surface architecture, however new challenges have been introduced with the environmentally conscious desire to build these structures in wood. Lacking the formal versatility of steel and concrete, wood introduces a great deal of difficulty in the realization of complex form at an architectural scale. Powerful digital design and fabrication tools have recently made it possible to model, analyze and construct these buildings, but at the cost of heavy structural solutions that involve energy intensive fabrication processes and significant material waste. This approach contradicts the ecological benefits of wood, and raises the question of whether it is possible to achieve free and expressive form in timber surface architecture while maintaining an economy of means and material. This question is addressed through the development of a generative design tool for the creation of material conscious free form timber surface architecture. The formation of the tool is informed by the field of computational morphogenesis, which draws from the natural growth processes of biological structures in the virtual synthesis of form. The tool is conceived as a morphogenetic material system, which consists of a generative algorithm that integrates material, structure and form in a single computational process. Specific material saving techniques deployed in the algorithm draw from existing research in timber shell design and material optimization. Established methods in the use of geodesic lines for the structural patterning of wood shells and stress driven material distribution make up the core concepts deployed in the algorithm. The material system is developed, refined and tested through the design and construction of an experimental free form timber lattice.

Automobile transportation consumes a significant amount of non-reusable energy and emits emissions as by-products of fuel consumption. There has been much progress in the development of vehicle engine technology and alternative fuels to reduce the adverse impact of highway transportation on the environment. However, the research regarding the reduction of the adverse impact through highway design is still in its infancy. Furthermore, highway design manuals/guidebooks do not provide any information on environmentally-friendly designs. The primary objective of this research was to provide the tools and guidelines for a quantitative environmental evaluation in highway design. This research provided the results regarding the quantitative environmental impacts, by means of fuel consumption and emissions, of various highway geometric design conditions on the vertical grades as well as for horizontal and vertical crest curves that could be included in the highway design process. The researcher generated second-by-second speed profiles using the speed prediction models and non-uniform acceleration/deceleration models, and extracted the fuel consumption and emissions rates based on vehicle specific powers and speeds using recently developed motor vehicle emission simulator (MOVES). The generated speed profiles were matched with the extracted rates and aggregated during a trip on the grades and curves. In addition, the researcher conducted the environmental evaluation including a benefit-cost analysis with actual highway geometric data based on the proposed method and processes. The results demonstrated that fuel consumption and emissions could be significantly changed according to highway design conditions on grades and curves. Throughout the analyses, this research provides the guidelines and tools for environmental evaluations related to selected design features as a part of the highway development process. The provided guidelines and tools can reduce the uncertainty associated with the engineering judgment for environmentally-conscious highway design. Finally, this research shows the efficacy of environmentally-friendly design for sustainable (i.e., social, economical, and environmental) transportation.
