In Finland, Confirmation training is a phenomenon that reaches a significant proportion of the population. There are, however, signs of trends which might cause a downturn in the popularity. The aim of this study was to find out professional Christian Youth Work Leader students’ relationship to Confirmation work and their professional identity as church workers. The qualitative study consisted of 18 essays written by the students and the analysis was based on the concept of the teaching-studying-learning process and the pedagogic triangle by Johann Friedrich Herbart. In addition to the theoretical frame of reference and backround overview, this paper presents and analyses the findings of the study. Today, the idea of teaching and learning is based on the constructivist learning theory which is also the basis of the curriculum of Finnish Confirmation training. This paper shows that students with the most experience in Confirmation work and strong identity as Church workers have embraced the role of spiritual guide emphasised by the current Confirmation curriculum. This can be seen as socio-constructivist approach. Students with less experience represented a more old-fashioned, authoritarian and behavioral view of teaching.

Cicero, in the early work de Inventione (1.18), defines what is the hermagorean doctrine of κρινόμενον: “the point for the judge's decision is the issue which arises from the denial (ex infirmatione) and tight assertion of the excuse (et confirmatione rationis)”. The doubts on the authenticity of the text are old, and modern editors delete the reference to the confirmatio. However, most of manuscripts attest the necessity of the confirmation of the defense. Also, confirmatio is that by means of which our speech proceeding in argument adds belief, and authority, and corroboration to our cause (de Inv., 1.34). Moreover Cicero, in Partitiones oratoriae (104), explains that only by continuous refutations between the parties to the proceedings it arises the κρινόμενον: this is the rhetorical counterpart of dialectic antilogy. Finally, the early medieval commentaries of the de Inventione give reason to the firmamentum after the κρινόμενον.

This article is based on the European project on confirmation work. It provides a brief description of the theological and ecclesiological background of this project as well as of the empirical studies carried out in this project in nine European countries and summarizes some of the main results. The example of Germany is used for presenting more detailed insights into the practice of confirmation work there as well as the religious attitudes of the confirmands. Given the high participation rates (more than 90% of Protestant youth in the respective age group in Europe versus 59% in the United States), the emphasis on reaching as many young people as possible is seen as a core characteristic of confirmation work in Germany and Europe. In a second step, the author considers confirmation in Europe and in the United States comparatively by identifying and discussing commonalities and differences on the basis of the empirical results from the research on confirmation work in the European and in the American project. One main difference is identified in the emphasis on mentorship (United States) and young volunteers (Europe). The final part of the article has its focus on the question of what confirmation work in the United States and in Europe could possibly learn from each other.

This article will briefly address the origins of confirmation and the current approaches to adolescent confirmation. Moreover, the article discusses the two predominant models of confirmation in the Catholic Church in the United States and the predominant methods for adolescent confirmation in Catholic parishes and in youth ministry settings. Finally, the article delineates three proposed methods for confirmation catechesis in Catholic youth ministry. The hope is that these three methods will help Catholic youth ministers and/or confirmation coordinators in their important work of providing confirmation catechesis with teenagers.

Abstract This article first discusses the question of how empirical research can contribute to the ongoing discussions concerning the future of the church. Among others, German research on church membership is used as a case study for gaining insights into the interplay between theoretical assumptions, empirical research and designing strategies for church development. The need for comparisons over time, for longitudinal studies and the identification of long-term predictors is discussed. Against this background, recent research on confirmation work in Germany and Europe is taken up as an example. The article draws on data from a European study on confirmation work with a longitudinal research approach. The results show that confirmation work, as one of the major educational programs of the Protestant Church, can influence adolescents’ views of Christian faith and the church. Predictors for future commitment to the church in terms of believing, belonging and volunteerism are not only dependent on religious socialization in childhood but also on experiences and activities during confirmation time in adolescence.

Annotation:

The following research explores female authority's experiences with gender roles in faith and church and the subsequent handling of gender sensitivity in confirmation work. The qualitative study is conducted based on empirical data to answer the research questions. The chosen feminist standpoint theory assists in identifying the sampling consisting of female authorities as participants who are in charge of the confirmation work. The theory examines resources to create a standpoint through feminist experiences as knowledge, creating feminist solidarity and agency. The constructionist thematic analysis identifies and establishes repeating patterns in combination with the participant's answers and the theory. The lived experiences are gathered through online questionnaires and analyzed and interpreted through the lens of the feminist standpoint theory. The qualitative study shows that women make various experiences based on gender roles in faith and church. Majorly challenging is the normalization of male-dominated structures and concepts. Still, the participants form standpoints concerning the significance of gender-sensitive confirmation work. The study's outcome shows that mainstream knowledge can be opposed by creating feminist knowledge, solidarity, and agency. A broad audience is addressed because the result can be generalized into several fields.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate what kind of factors contributed to motivate a group of nurses at a nursing home in western Sweden to to perform their work. Furthermore, the authors wanted to investigate whether the staff nurses felt that the leader helped to increase or reduce the perceived motivation to perform such work, and the way in which staff nurses perceived their relationship to the leader. The study is based on Herzberg's (1959) two-factor theory, Hackman and Oldham's (1980) work designs theory and Leader-member exchange (LMX) theory, and those theories are the basis of the study's structure. The study was of a qualitative property, interviews were conducted with seven nurses and was structured, the questions concerned their subjective experience of motivating factors in their everyday work. The results of this study demonstrated that respondents experienced confirmation, the meaningfulness of the work, work colleagues, beneficiaries of care and residents' families as contributing factors to motivate them in their daily work. It was also found in the results of the study that respondents considered the leader as a factor reducing the motivation to carry out their daily work, as the respondents also felt the relationship with the leader to be very limited. The analysis also identified a new category that the authors have chosen to call "resistance".

A fitness center service quality measure was tested with 151 respondents to confirm a 19-item, five-factor model. The results substantiated the SQAS-19 as an adequate measure of fitness center service quality in that it continued to demonstrate that service quality is a multidimensional construct. The serious leisure inventory and measure (SLIM) was tested with 348 chess players to confirm the factors, assess the effects of method bias, and propose a set of the best-performing items for the 18 factor SLIM. The 54-item SLIM demonstrated acceptable fit and reliability values. The effect of method bias was evidenced in the sample and explained one-third of the variance. Inspection of factor loadings, when controlling for method bias, yielded one best-performing item per factor. Findings indicate method bias continues to be problematic for self-report measures such as the SLIM.

Chapter 3 examines the complete 32-bar compositions Parker wrote that do not make use of rhythm changes. There are six of these, and they include his first composition (“Yardbird Suite”), one of his most admired compositions (“Confirmation”), a work that borrows from two French popular songs (“My Little Suede Shoes”), and three works that were not recorded (“Alesia,” “Throckmorton the Plumber,” and “Tail Feathers”). “Yardbird Suite” was originally titled “What Price Love?” and is his only song for which he wrote a lyric. “Confirmation” features a bridge with apparently original chord changes. The source songs for “My Little Suede Shoes” were discovered in the early 2000s. Of the unrecorded songs, only “Alesia” was definitely written by Parker.

Using a Weberian theoretical framework, chapter 2 focuses on the ways faith is confirmed. The issue of confirmation (Bewährung) is of the utmost importance since faith is hardly definitely acquired and, for most of the people, constantly needs to be reaffirmed. The chapter demonstrates that modes of inner confirmation of one’s faith (of one’s religious charisma, of one’s certainty to be saved, of one’s religious virtuosity) in the Yiguandao are tightly linked to proselytizing work and therefore directly beneficial to the group’s expansion. Additionally, it explores a number of features (e.g., spirit-writing) that do not come from the missionary-adept himself or herself, but from the outside and that reinforce the certitude of the adept that the faith he or she embraces is the true one.

Work-related asthma can be divided in two major entities: work-exacerbated asthma and occupational asthma. Occupational asthma is further split into two subtypes: sensitizer-induced occupational asthma and irritant-induced asthma, which includes reactive airway dysfunction syndrome. The patient’s medical history (type of symptoms and timing) is not sufficient to diagnose occupational asthma. The diagnosis requires an objective confirmation of asthma and of work-related functional changes. Psychological distress, health-related quality-of-life impairment, and comorbid psychiatric disorder are frequent in patients with work-related asthma or work-related asthma symptoms and have to be considered in the evaluation and treatment. Many areas of research are still needed to understand the complexity of work-related asthma.

Abstract The long-term programme aimed at selection of a site for a deep repository was initiated in Finland in 1983. This programme has come to end and a new phase aimed at implementation of the geological disposal of spent fuel has been started. In this new phase the first milestone is the application for a construction license for the disposal facility around 2010 and thereafter, as a second step, the operation license in 2020. To fulfil the needs for detailed design of the disposal system, an underground rock characterisation facility, “ONKALO”, will be constructed at the representative depth at Olkiluoto. The excavation of this facility will start the work for underground characterisation, testing and demonstration which is planned to be a continuous activity throughout the whole life cycle of the deep repository.

Nose cones, turbine blades and bearings have rotating components and represent very practical geometries for which the modal behavior of vortex structures is not completely understood. These three rather different physical cases are being studied. A common theme of competition between modes and vortex types, whether counter-rotating or co-rotating, emerges. The objective of ongoing work is to obtain physical confirmation, enhanced understanding and predictive capability for the vortex structures encountered in rotating machines.

The paper deals with the development of TG 50 gas turbine and its evolution in the years from the original to the present configuration with mention of substantial improvements in both compressor and turbine sections that initiated the growth of power output from the original 75 MW to the 110 MW present rating. Successful solution of some basic operating problems encountered mainly in the compressor section, required quite an extensive research and development work. In addition, comprehensive test programs have been carried out for the development of the present configuration and for the confirmation of the validity of the selected solutions.

The development of analytical method to predict and assess the current state of the reactor cores of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is required. Experimental researches are also required to obtain data to verify the analytical results and to understand the phenomena that are important to the accident progress evaluation. In the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, seawater was injected into the reactors to cool down nuclear fuels. Core cooling with seawater has never been assumed and the effect of seawater on heat transfer in core is not clear. Then, effects of seawater on thermal-hydraulic behavior must be investigated to understand the phenomena occurred in the accident and to evaluate current state of the reactor cores. In this series of research work, the effects of seawater on thermal-hydraulic behavior before and after degradation of the cores will be researched experimentally. Experimental results will be incorporated to numerical simulation codes to evaluate effects of seawater on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. In the experimental research part, we have a plan performing two heat transfer experiments to evaluate thermal hydraulic performance of sea water and effects of salt precipitation. A precipitation state confirmation experiment is performed to obtain basic information required for the experiments with salt precipitation. In this paper, outline of the research plan is explained and the results of the precipitation state confirmation experiment is shown.

This is a theoretical-experimental work, where the focus molecule of the study is savinine, a lignan of the dibenzylbutyrolactonic type, substances that can be found in several genera, one of which has a greater occurrence is the genus Acanthopanax (Araliaceae) which is traditionally used as an analgesic and immune system stimulant, in addition to exhibiting a potent insecticidal and cytotoxic activity for human colon carcinoma HCT116 cells. It was isolated and here we present its experimental and theoretical characterization by means of 13C and 1H NMR data and the possible confirmation of the structure using the neural network tool (ANN-PRA). The objective of this work is to use theoretical calculations of 13C and 1H NMR and experimental data for the resolution of the savinine structure, and the use of the neural network tool (ANN-PRA) to confirm the structure of the molecule.

Abstract This work elaborates a computational fluid dynamic model utilised in the investigation of the hydrodynamic performance concerning a ducted high-solidity tidal turbine in yawed inlet flows. Analysing the performance at distinct bearing angles with the axis of the turbine, increases in torque and mechanical rotational power were acknowledged to be induced within a limited angular range at distinct tip-speed ratio values. Through multiple yaw iterations, the peak attainment was found to fall between bearing angles of 15° and 30°, resulting in a maximum power increase of 3.22%, together with an extension of power development to higher tip-speed ratios. In confirmation, these outcomes were subsequently analysed by means of actuator disc theory, attaining a distinguishable relationship with blade-integrated outcomes.

The pathogen of bacterial pea blight Pseudomonas syringae pv. pisi is the main phytopathogen of the edible pea (Pisum sativum L.). An increase in the production of leguminous crops in the Russian Federation and throughout the world requires reliable methods of confirmation of the absence of bacteriosis pathogen. The aim of this work is to study and apply the PCR method in the diagnosis of the bacterial pea blight pathogen using commercial sets, officially approved in the Russian Federation. Together with the PCR methods, these commercial sets showed their efficiency. After complete proof tests, the proposed PCR method can be used as one of the official tests for the detection of the bacterial pea blight P. syringae pv. Pisi in both plant and seed material.

The objective of this work was to optimize the operational conditions aiming to deposit weld overlays with a minimal dilution and iron content as low as possible, and a thickness of weld higher than 3 mm just in a single layer. The alloys studied were Inconel 625, Hastelloy C276 and Inconel 686. The ASTM A516 Gr 60 steel was used as substrate. The welds were performed by GTAW cold wire feed process. The Taguchi method was applied to design the experiments and to evaluate the influence of the variables. The results showed that the arc oscillation (weaving) has a strong effect on the penetration and dilution of welds. The confirmation test for the optimal settings indicated that the additive model of the Taguchi method was not only confirmed the excellent reproducibility, but also provides sufficient confidence in the factorial effects.

Abstract Large diameter axial flow fans are used in Air-cooled Condenser (ACC) systems of modern power stations. Efficiency improvements on these fans can significantly reduce the ACC power consumption and increase the net sent-out power to the grid. This study targets fan performance enhancement through blade tip vortex reduction. Experimental investigations are performed on a representative ACC scale fan, where tests consider the effects of tip clearance and two new tip endplate designs on fan performance. Test results confirm the findings of previous studies, showing the negative effect of increasing tip clearance on performance. Despite testing limitations, results from tests incorporating endplates show fan static pressure coefficient and efficiency increases over large ranges of flow coefficient compared to the datum fan. These outcomes agree with observations from literature and warrants further exploration. Future work is recommended to provide confirmation on the presented trends.

In the present work, the onset and subsequent development of slug flow in horizontal pipes is investigated by accurately solving the transient one-dimensional version of the Two-Fluid Model using a finite volume technique. Growth of disturbances that eventually bridge the pipe section is an automatic outcome of the solution of the discretized equations in a high resolution mesh, avoiding the need for the commonly used phenomenological models for the stratified to slug transition. Slug dynamics evolve naturally without the need of empirical correlations for slug parameters. This methodology (named “slug-capturing”) was proposed before in the literature and the present work represents a rare confirmation of its applicability in predicting this very complex flow regime. Here, different configurations are analyzed and comparisons are performed against different sets of experimental data. Additionally, statistical analysis of the slug parameters is performed and it is shown through comparisons against experimental measurements that this methodology is able not only to provide mean values of e.g. slug and bubble lengths and their evolution inside the pipe, but also shapes of probability density functions (PDFs), with a good degree of accuracy.

Standard methods are in place for analysis of 17 legacy munitions compounds and one surrogate in water and soil matrices; however, several insensitive munition (IM) and degradation products are not part of these analytical procedures. This lack could lead to inaccurate determinations of munitions in environmental samples by either not measuring for IM compounds or using methods not designed for IM and other legacy compounds. This work seeks to continue expanding the list of target analytes currently included in the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8330B. This technical report presents three methods capable of detecting 29 legacy, IM, and degradation products in a single High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method with either ultraviolet (UV)-visible absorbance detection or mass spectrometric detection. Procedures were developed from previously published works and include the addition of hexahydro-1-nitroso-3,5-dinitro-1,3,5-triazine (MNX); hexahydro-1,3-dinitroso-5-nitro-1,3,5-triazine (DNX); hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitroso-1,3,5-triazine (TNX); 2,4-diamino-6-nitrotoluene (2,4-DANT); and 2,6-diamino-4-nitrotoluene (2,6-DANT). One primary analytical method and two secondary (confirmation) methods were developed capable of detecting 29 analytes and two surrogates. Methods for high water concentrations (direct injection), low-level water concentrations (solid phase extraction), soil (solvent extraction), and tissue (solvent extraction) were tested for analyte recovery of the new compounds.

Hilly terrain poses challenges to truck platoons using fixed set speed cruise control. Driving the front truck efficiently on hilly terrain improves both trucks fuel economies and improves gap maintenance between the trucks. An experimentally-validated simulation model was used to show fuel savings for the platoon of 12.3% when the front truck uses long horizon predictive cruise control (LH-PCC), 8.7% when the front truck uses flexible set speed cruise control, and only 1.2% when the front truck uses fixed set speed cruise control. Purdue, Peloton, and Cummins have jointly configured two Peterbilt 579 trucks for relevant combinations of: (1) coordinated shifting, (2) constant or variable platoon gap controls, (3) flexible or constant speed setpoint cruise control of the front trucks, and (4) long-horizon predictive cruise control (LHPCC) of the front truck. Confirmation of this functionality during platooning was demonstrated at the Continental Test track in Uvalde, Texas. In Indiana, on-road experiments were limited to single truck operation with long-horizon predictive cruise control, flexible set speed cruise control, and constant setpoint cruise control. Data from all of the above was used to improve the fidelity of simulations used to arrive at the fuel savings and gap control findings for hilly terrain per what is summarized in the findings section. Additionally, in early summer 2020, Purdue submitted to, and received improvement from, INDOT for a safe truck platoon testing protocol (located in this report’s appendix), which could not be implemented in Indiana before the end of the project because of COVID-19. The article is dedicated to the investigation of time-space measurements of journalistic works of Eugen Sverstiuk, a well-known Ukrainian journalist. In particular, the time-space continuum of his works is being discussed, which is characterized as comprehensive, continuous, filled with archetypical images which metaphorize the text, but at the same time structure it, and are beaded on the axis of time and documentarily located in the space. The logics of images initiated in the text is exaggerated by constant dwelling of the author in the time-space dimensions of the epoque, of which he was a contemporary, as well as precise knowledge of World and Ukrainian history and culture. Historical parallelism of journalism of E. Sverstiuk possesses double potential. On the one hand, the author provides arguments for confirmation of his own opinion, and on the other, he shows us historical collisions in the new aspect, which helps consider the past, better understand the present, and think of the future. Pages of his works is space for author’s considerations, which logics impresses by free transgression of the author in the time, and his ability to grasp the most essential, although sometimes precedent, sometimes sudden and forgotten, or even unknown historical facts in order to force them to resonate in the new historical realities, first of all to indicate the importance of national and the need for assigning to it more significance. Using retrospectives, E. Sverstiuk encourages us to return to the national sources and to seek in ourselves the reflections of nationality in order to return historical truth to our audience. This is what, according to E. Sverstiuk, was believed to be one of the most necessary conditions of existence to the independent state. Time-space continuum of E. Sverstiuk’s journalism is reproduction of comprehensive history as continuous process of the development of humanity, and of formation of comprehensive, total, and so to say epic reading and understanding of these processes via accentuation of reader’s attention on key events, phenomena, and facts.
