Ce travail à débuté par une recherche des conditions optimales de recuit dans une machine à lampes à chambre de quartz (Addax R1000), en géométrie sandwich, ou en nacelle graphite revouverte de SiC, en vue de minimiser la dégradation par perte de phosphore. Il est montré qu'une couche de InGaAs épitaxiée par jet moléculaire (MBE) sur me substrat InP constitue une protection efficace contre la dégradation thermique du matériau. La dégradation résiduelle a été étudiée sur divers substrats non intentionnellement dopés (type n) et semi-isolants dopés Fe par caractérisation électrique C(V) et spectroscopie thermique capacitive (DLTS) et de photo courant (PICTS). Le résultat le plus marquant de cette étude, est l'apparition dans le matériau non dopé d'une zone appauvrie en porteurs libres en surface, et d'épaisseur variable selon la séquence des procédés subie par le matériau recuit, qui n'existe pas sur le substrat vierge. Un e compensationuniforme en volume est observée après croisement MB. Ces effects sont parfaitement corrélés avec l’apparition simultanée en forte concentration d'un niveau profond à Ec-0,63ev, classiquement identifié au niveau accepteur Fe3+/Fe2+ associé à Fe en site IN dans InP, corrélation confirmée par des mesures de spectroscopie optique (DLOS) et par analyse à la sonde ionique (SIMS). L'encapsulation InGaAs est enfin appliquée au recuit d'implantation pour les technologies MISFET. Un e redistribution de Fe corrélée aux profils des espèces implantées est observé<br>We started this work by are research on the optimised annealing conditions in a quartz chamber lamp furnace (Addax R1000) using a sandwich or a SiC-coated graphite cell configuration, in order to minimise the degradation due to phosphorus loss. We show that an MBE-epitaxial InGaAs layer grown onto InP substrate is an efficient protection against material thermal degradation. Capacitance-voltage measurements C(V) deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and photo-induced current spectroscopy (PICTS) analysis were implemented for the purpose of investigating the residual degradation in non intentionally doped (n-type) and semi-insulating De-doped substrates. The most prominent result of this study is the appearance in the undoped material of a depletion surface region which is not observed in a virgin substrate and whose thickness depends on teh process sequencies underwent by the annealed substrate. An uniform carrier compensation is observed after MBE growth. Those effects are quite correlated to the appearance in a high concentration of an Ec-0,63eV deep level, classically identified with the Fe3+/Fe2+ acceptor level which is due to the Fe on In sites in InP. This correlation is confirmed by optical spectroscopy measurements (DLOS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis (SIMS). Finally, the InGaAs encapsulation was applied to the post-implantation annealing in MISFET technologies. An Fe redistribution correlated to the profiles of the implanted species is observed

Pour cela, des aciers ODS ont été synthétisés par broyage et recuit et des caractérisations multi-échelles ont été effectuées après chaque étape de la synthèse. Les caractéristiques finales des nano-oxydes et donc celles des aciers ODS ainsi formés peuvent être contrôlées via les paramètres de broyage (intensité, température et atmosphère) et de recuit (durée et température)<br>In the context of the development of new ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) steels as core materials in future nuclear reactors, we investigated a new process inspired by reactive ball-milling which consists in using YFe3 and Fe2O3 as starting reactants instead of Y2O3 to produce a dispersion of nano-oxides in a steel matrix and the influence of synthesis conditions on the nano-oxide characteristics were studied. For that aim, ODS steels were prepared by ball-milling and then annealed. Multi-scale characterizations were performed after each synthesis step, using notably atom probe tomography and small angle neutron scattering. The process inspired by reactive ball-milling was shown to be efficient for ODS steel synthesis, but it does not modify the nano-oxide characteristics as compared to those of oxides directly incorporated in the matrix by ball-milling. Broadly speaking, the nature of the starting oxygen-bearing reactants has no influence on nano-oxide formation. Moreover, we showed that the nucleation of nano-oxides nucleation can start during milling and continues during annealing with a very fast kinetic. The final characteristics of nano-oxides formed in this way can be monitored through ball-milling parameters (intensity, temperature and atmosphere) and annealing parameters (duration and temperature)

Des monocristaux de silicium |100| et |111| ont ete implantes avec des ions azote a forte dose (10#1#7 a 10#1#8 n#2#+/cm#2) a 160 kev pour synthetiser des films de nitrure de silicium si#3n#4. Les echantillons implantes ont ete recuits dans un four a lampes, a des temperatures d'environ 1200c pour des durees de 40 s. Afin de caracteriser le materiau etudie, differentes methodes d'analyse ont ete utilisees: retrodiffusion rutherford des ions en position aleatoire et en geometrie de canalisation (rbs); microscopie electronique en transmission (tem); mesures electriques. Les analyses en rbs nous ont permis de mesurer la quantie d'azote implantee et la repartition (profil) des elements, et d'estimer les defauts induits par implantation. Les observations tem en coupe transverse nous ont permis de connaitre les variations structurales de la zone implantee. Enfin les caracteristiques ont montre l'obtention de couches de nitrure d'epaisseur d'environ 1200 a. Ces epaisseurs deduites des mesures electriques confirment les mesures en rbs et tem. Pour expliquer la conduction des films, l'existence d'un effet poole-frenkel ou schottky est discutee. L'ensemble de cette etude montre que le materiau isolant synthetise par recuit rapide apres implantation correspond bien a un nitrure, mais presente une conductivite electrique tros elevee par rapport au si#3n#4 obtenupar d'autres methodes. La forte densite de courant observee est probablement liee a l'exces d'azote et aux techniques de recuits rapides qui ne realisent pas une synthese complete

L'elaboration de couches minces supraconductrices de la phase tl#2ba#2cacu#2o#8 utilise un processus en deux etapes qui comporte le depot d'un film precurseur amorphe de stoechiometrie 2:2:1:2-tl:ba:ca:cu suivi d'une cristallisation de la couche. Celle-ci est effectuee par un recuit dans une enceinte confinee a cause de la grande volatilite des oxydes de thallium controlee par une contre pression d'oxygene. Nous avons montre que la morphologie de la surface des couches cristallisees est fortement dependante de la pression d'oxygene lors du recuit. Un optimum a ete determine avec une pression de 10 bars. Cette meme pression induit une diminution de la temperature critique (tc). Pour remedier a ce probleme, des recuits sous argon sont necessaires pour diminuer le taux d'oxygene dans les couches apres cristallisation et ainsi augmenter la tc. Pour mieux comprendre le role joue par l'oxygene dans la variation de la temperature critique, des mesures par spectroscopie d'absorption de rayons x ont ete effectuees. Les porteurs de charge intervenant dans la supraconductivite, sont dans ce materiau des trous de dopage dans la configuration electronique du cuivre. La presence de ces trous est dependante de l'oxydation de la couche cuo#2. La couche tlo sert de reservoir tampon pour la couche cuo#2. Les resultats obtenus pour l'elaboration de couches de la phase tl#2ba#2cacu#2o#8 ont ete utilises pour l'elaboration de la phase tl#2ba#2ca#2cu#3o#9. Les echantillons prepares ont permis l'etude de la symetrie et de la densite des trous de dopage et la comparaison du comportement de ces deux phases

La couche mince d'Oxyde Transparent Conducteur (OTC) utilisée en tant qu'électrode avant pour les cellules photovoltaïques silicium microcristallin est un matériau déterminant pour l'amélioration de leur rendement. Un OTC prometteur est l'oxyde de zinc dopé aluminium ZnO:Al déposé par pulvérisation cathodique magnétron RF. Une première partie du travail de thèse est dédiée à l'étude de l'influence des conditions de dépôt sur la microstructure, les mécanismes de croissance et les propriétés optoélectroniques du ZnO:Al. Nous avons ainsi obtenu un optimum en termes de transparence maximale dans le domaine visible et de résistivité minimale pour un dépôt réalisé à une pression de 0.12 Pa pour une température de 325 °C. Une seconde partie du travail de thèse porte sur l'effet de traitements après-dépôt, recuit thermique ou laser excimère, sur les propriétés du ZnO:Al déposé à température ambiante. L'influence de différentes atmosphères (sous-vide, N2/H2, et pur N2) et températures de recuit (de 400 à 500 °C) a été étudié. L'étape de recuit thermique a permis une amélioration notable des propriétés optoélectroniques de la couche ZnO:Al, jusqu'à une résistivité de 3.5×10-4 Ohm.cm pour une transmittance entre 400 et 1000 nm de 81.2%. L'étape de recuit laser, quant à elle, influe notamment les propriétés morphologiques du matériau. L'étape finale de ce travail de thèse est basée sur l'étude de la texturation chimique, étape ayant pour but la formation d'une morphologie de surface optimale, c'est-à-dire permettant le piégeage optique dans les couches actives silicium microcristallin et ce, sans altérer les qualités électriques de la couche. L'intégration de ces couches minces ZnO:Al en tant qu'électrode avant dans des cellules photovoltaïques PIN à base de silicium microcristallin à été et étudié en détail.

Dans le contexte de l'augmentation de l'efficacité énergétique, les systèmes électriques passent par une conception très compactée afin de réduire leurs volumes et poids, spécifiquement dans les systèmes intervenant dans les transports (automobile, ferroviaire et aérien). Cette compacité amène les matériaux magnétiques des nouveaux convertisseurs électriques à fonctionner dans environnements sévères (hautes températures et hautes fréquences). Cette thèse est consacrée pour étudier le comportement dans le temps (vieillissement) des matériaux nanocristallins FeCuNbSiB dédié à la conception des transformateurs, des inductances et des capteurs de courants. Différentes nuances de ces matériaux sont étudiées sachant que les échantillons sont fournis par APERAM Imphy sous forme des tores. En premier temps, les nanocristallins sont étudiées lors du vieillissement continu sous différentes températures. Plusieurs grandeurs macroscopiques magnétiques sont mesurées à chaque période de vieillissement. Afin d'expliquer le mécanisme du vieillissement, une analyse des énergies d'anisotropies est menée, compléter par des mesures à différentes échelles (locale, mésoscopique et microscopique). En deuxième temps, les propriétés magnétiques des nanocristallins sont suivis durant leur vieillissement thermique sous excitation alternée. Cette dernière est appliquée en utilisant des circuits électroniques conçus pour des capteurs de courant fluxgate fournis par LEM. Au final, l'impact du vieillissement magnétique des nanocristallins sur l'évolution des paramètres des capteurs est étudié<br>In the context of increasing energy efficiency, electrical systems need to be designed in a very compact way in order to reduce their volume and weight, specifically in systems used in transportation (automotive, rail and airplanes). This compactness leads the magnetic materials of the new electrical converters to operate in severe environments (high temperatures and high frequencies). This thesis focuses on the behavior over time (aging) of FeCuNbSiB nanocrystalline materials dedicated to the design of transformers, inductors and current sensors. Different grades of nanocrystalline materials were provided by our collaborator APERAM Imphy in the form of wound cores. At first, nanocrystalline materials are studied during continuous aging under different temperatures. In aim to monitor aging evolution, several macroscopic magnetic properties are measured at each aging period. In order to explain the aging mechanism, an analysis of the anisotropy energies is conducted, completed by measurements at different scales (local, mesoscopic and microscopic). Thereafter, the magnetic properties of nanocrystalline materials are monitored during their thermal aging under alternating excitation. The latter is applied using electronic circuits designed for fluxgate current sensors provided by LEM. Finally, the impact of magnetic aging of nanocrystals on the evolution of sensor parameters is studied

La thèse est inscrite au sein du projet ASTRID, qui est un démonstrateur technologique pour les réacteurs de quatrième génération (Gen-IV). Le premier matériau choisi pour constituer les gaines de cœur est un acier inoxydable austénitique stabilisé au titane (type 15Cr-15Ni Ti). L’écrouissage à froid des gaines permet la précipitation de nano-carbures de titane en service sur les dislocations, retardant ainsi les phénomènes de restauration par effet d’épinglage. En conditions accidentelles (T > 650°C), et plus particulièrement dans le cas d’une perte de réfrigérant primaire, le comportement en fluage de ces gaines est très mal connu. L’objectif des travaux de thèse est donc de déterminer les mécanismes de déformation et de rupture en fluage, entre 650°C et 950°C, de cet acier à l’état non irradié.Dans un premier temps, les microstructures d’échantillons après différents recuits ont été comparées afin d’étudier l’influence de la température sur les évolutions métallurgiques. L’étude de la précipitation et des cinétiques de restauration et de recristallisation, ont permis de dresser les évolutions microstructurales sans charge appliquée.En plus d’étudier le comportement en fluage uniaxial de l’acier à haute température, les caractérisations des éprouvettes après essais ont permis de déterminer les évolutions microstructurales au cours et après essais de fluage (contributions simultanées de la température et de la contrainte). La comparaison avec les microstructures obtenues après recuits a mis en évidence une accélération de la cinétique de recristallisation sous charge, rendant l’effet de la contrainte sur ces évolutions non négligeable.Après fluage sous air aux plus basses températures (650°C et 750°C), les fractographies présentent une rupture globalement transgranulaire avec certaines zones intergranulaires. Après fluage sous vide secondaire à plus hautes températures (850°C et 950°C), un fort amincissement des éprouvettes et une striction quasiment complète dans l’épaisseur ont été observés. Ce fort amincissement se traduit par un alignement de cupules, caractéristique de ruptures 100% ductiles à très haute température<br>The ASTRID project aims at designing a fast-reactor prototype for the 4th generation of nuclear power plants. The material to be used for fuel cladding is a cold-worked austenitic stainless steel stabilized with titanium (15Cr-15Ni Ti type) and optimized in minor elements. This material was developed to limit recovery and irradiation-induced swelling and to improve microstructural stability and mechanical properties in normal operating conditions. In case of incidental situations (irradiation temperature > 650°C), the cladding might rapidly reach higher temperatures up to 950°C where its stability could be affected. The present work aims at improving knowledge and understanding of the microstructural evolution and creep behaviour of this steel at these temperatures (650°C-950°C).Microstructural characterizations of thermally-aged samples have been performed in order to study the effect of temperature on metallurgical evolutions (precipitation, recovery and recrystallization). A phenomenological model including recovery and recrystallization processes was set up to reproduce hardness measurements versus ageing time and temperatures.Isothermal creep tests up to 950°C under a wide range of stress levels allowed investigation of viscoplastic flow, microstructural evolution under stress and damage/failure processes. In order to evaluate the effect of high-temperature loading, microstructural characteristics of stress-free thermally-aged samples were compared with post-mortem examinations of creep specimens.At 650°C and 750°C the value of stress exponent is higher than 7. The main deformation mechanism during creep test is power-low creep, which is consistent with the results found in the literature.Beyond 850°C, the increase in dislocation mobility promotes recovery and recrystallization processes. As a consequence, a competition between work hardening due to viscoplastic deformation and softening due to dynamic recovery takes place. At 950°C, viscoplastic flow is strongly affected by recrystallization during creep test, especially in the tertiary stage. The comparison between microstructures of crept specimens and stress-free, thermally-aged samples leads to the conclusion that the recrystallization kinetics is accelerated by application of a mechanical loading.As for the fracture behaviour, creep tests under air environment at lower temperatures (650°C-750°C), led to predominating ductile fracture but some intergranular zones were observed on fracture surfaces. Creep tests under high vacuum at higher temperatures (850°C-950°C) lead to a high fracture elongation with a reduction of area up to 100%

IP25 is a highly branched isoprenoid alkene derived from certain Arctic sea ice diatoms that, when detected in marine sediments, has been used as a proxy for past Arctic sea ice over the last decade. In the current study, the structure of this biomarker was determined following large-scale extraction from sediment material collected from the Canadian Arctic. After purification, the structure of IP25 was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy as being the same as that of a laboratory standard. The purified IP25 was subsequently used to obtain a quantitative (GC-MS) instrumental response factor that could be used to improve the future quantification of IP25 and would help to produce a robust database. IP25, other highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipids and some other phytoplanktonic lipids (sterols) were analysed to provide modern and past sediment-based sea ice reconstructions for the Barents Sea. First, a surface sediment study was conducted and biomarker distributions were compared to satellite sea ice records. The occurrence of IP25 was consistent with the presence/absence of seasonal sea ice but there was also evidence of lateral transport of IP25 and other biomarkers in sediments from the southern Barents Sea. In contrast to some previous studies, abundances of IP25, and of those combined with other biomarkers, including sterols, did not show strong quantitative relationships to sea ice concentration. The surface study was used to relate biomarker distributions to recent sea ice and oceanographic conditions and apply this information to long-term sediment records in the eastern and western Barents Sea covering ca. 2 kyr and 11 kyr (Holocene) respectively. IP25 concentrations for the former were found to be very variable and were used to identify the period with maximum sea ice cover occurring from ca. 900 - 400 cal. yr BP where the highest abundances of IP25 and IRD were observed. Similarly, biomarker results from the eastern Barents Sea provided evidence for a dynamic advance of the marginal sea ice zone potentially situated at ca. 78° N (maximum extent) during ca 9.4 – 5.9 cal. kyr BP, to late Holocene and modern day maximum MIZ advance ca. 75° N. Replicate analysis of various biomarkers in individual push-cores collected from a box core obtained from Rijpfjorden (north Svalbard) demonstrated some variability between cores. Variability in individual biomarker concentrations was lowest for HBI lipids and greatest for sterols. These data are consistent with a selective and relatively minor source of the former. In contrast, the somewhat more generic origins of sedimentary sterols likely explain the greater variability in their distributions between cores Finally, the strong abundance relationship between IP25 and a structurally related di-unsaturated HBI (C25:2) was confirmed in all sediments, similar to that found between two tri-unsaturated HBIs, consistent with co-production by certain marine phytoplankton. The progressive use of novel HBIs with two or three degrees of unsaturation (e.g. C25:2 and C25:3) could provide further valuable insights into environmental conditions.

This dissertation examines the socio-cultural conditions of Japanese society as reflected in factors that induce recent Japanese immigration to Canada. The examination is based on interview research done with six female and six male Japanese immigrants living in Vancouver, who arrived in Canada after the mid-1990s. While previous migration studies emphasized political-economic conditions as the causes of migration flow, the narratives of these interviewees reveal a different migratory pattern that is motivated by spiritual well-being and life values. In order to encapsulate the complexity of contemporary migration flow, the push/pull factors that induced interviewees' emigration are thematically categorized and analyzed within a frame that emphasizes both these factors' interdependence with the interrelationships of Japanese social systems that have swayed the interviewees' decision to emigrate from Japan, and the nature of complexity in Japanese society.
Showing the pluralism of these factors, they are categorized into nine themes: 1)physical environment; 2) spiritual enrichment and a stress-reduced life style; 3) socio-cultural constraints; 4) family life; 5) education; 6) age restrictions; 7) gender roles; 8)diversification, and 9) self-actualization. Luhmann's theory of social systems and Foucault's notion of governmentality serve as touchstones for the re-interpretation of the push/pull factors based on the examination of the interrelations among three Japanese social systems of family, education, and employment. The analysis reveals the complexity of the push/pull factors. Moreover, the interviewees' image of a "simple Canada," which also contributes to their decision to immigrate, is explained in terms of the "double complexity" of Japanese society stemming from both the complexity of modern society and the complexity of an amalgam of "modern" and "pre-modern" elements in Japanese society. Through an extensive examination of the correlations between the experiences of contemporary Japanese migrants and Japanese social systems, this study brings new insights to discussions on tensions between human agency and social structure, and the importance of intangible, mental images in the ways people shape their lives.

The investigation of extreme precipitation events over the western coast of Saudi Arabia is necessary to estimate their potential impact on both socioeconomic activities and the regional environment. The current study aims at understanding the atmospheric dynamics leading to extreme precipitation, to improve weather forecasting in the target region and the development of long-term adaptation policies. Preliminary results reveal that extreme precipitation events in this region occur during the wet season (Nov–Jan). The synoptic mechanisms of these events are a function of the complex interaction between tropical, subtropical and middle-latitude dynamics. The synoptic dynamic processes were identified by a subjective study of the highest 30 extreme events. In addition, the weather circulation patterns (WCPs) of all extreme events were classified objectively by means of an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis based on the mean sea level pressure. WCPs were linked with synoptic dynamic processes and teleconnected with large-scale climate variability modes. Furthermore, WCPs, precipitation and data regarding other atmospheric variables from different regional climate models were used to investigate future changes in extreme precipitation events under climate change. The most important weather circulation patterns, which are associated with extreme precipitation events, were identified. The possibility of extreme precipitation events increases with great uncertainty.

The purpose of the study has been to assess the question of sustainability of economic growth and human development, particularly using sub-Saharan Africa in context. Sub-Saharan Africa is an interesting case study because, on the one hand, it has been mired in poverty and remains the least developed region in the world, and on the other, it has experienced a revival in economic growth since the mid-1990s. Economists tend to use the term economic development and economic growth interchangeably. However, questions have been raised about whether Africa’s latest growth episode is indeed ‘development’. Although there are many issues at stake, the key question, and the focus of this thesis, is whether sub-Saharan Africa’s revival is sustainable. The paper sets out the debate between the ‘World Bank view’ and the ‘alternative view’. The main debate lies around how genuine development should be achieved. Firstly, the ‘World Bank view’ claims that economic growth is necessary and sufficient condition to achieve development. Economic growth will be generated by ‘orthodox’ policies and this growth will automatically trickle-down and stimulate development. Secondly, the ‘alternative view’ argues that economic growth is necessary but it is not sufficient to stimulate sustainable development. Economic growth without ‘qualitative’ change is not ‘sustainable’. Indeed, human development shortfalls (as well as other, social, political and structural problems), if not addressed through appropriate policy interventions, can undermine economic growth. The ‘alternative view’ appears to be strongly supported by evidence from other developing regions such as Latin America and East Asia. The empirical study conducted in this thesis reinforces doubts about ‘sustainability’. Even though there are signs of convergence in some indicators; this is not the case for all indicators. More importantly the gap between sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions remains very wide. Sub-Saharan Africa’s development path remains uncertain. The intention in this study is not to be conclusive that sub-Saharan Africa cannot achieve sustainable development. Rather the study attempts to identify potential hindrances to sub-Saharan Africa’s development and to provide a solid foundation for further research in the same direction.

Le polyamide 11 (PA11) est soumis à des conditions particulières d’utilisation (contraintes mécaniques, température élevée en présence d’eau) au cours desquelles ses caractéristiques mécaniques et physico-chimiques peuvent être altérées. Notamment l’hydrolyse peut générer une fragilisation du matériau par coupure des chaines macromoléculaires. On peut trouver dans la littérature des rapprochements entre propriétés macroscopiques et propriétés microstructurales afin de caractériser la transition ductile-fragile du polyamide. Mais peu d’attention a été portée jusqu’à présent sur la modélisation du comportement mécanique évoluant avec le vieillissement en lien avec la diffusion d’eau dans le matériau.L’objectif de ce travail de thèse est donc de pouvoir prédire la transition ductile-fragile des polyamides, du PA11 en particulier, au cours d’un vieillissement en température et en milieu aqueux acide.La première partie du travail de thèse a porté sur la compréhension de la dégradation mécanique du PA11 en fonction d’un vieillissement hydrique et thermique (à pH4 et à 110°C) en s’appuyant sur une campagne expérimentale afin de relier l’évolution du comportement mécanique macroscopique à celle de descripteurs physico-chimiques. Tout d’abord, des essais de vieillissement en milieu acide et en température ont été effectués pour évaluer la dégradation aux temps longs du PA11. Puis, pour décorréler les effets de l’hydrolyse des effets de recuit, des essais de vieillissement thermique uniquement, en milieu neutre, ont été réalisés. Des essais de traction à la rupture, et des essais de fluage ont ensuite été menés dans le but de mesurer d’éventuelles modifications des propriétés mécaniques au cours du vieillissement. Différentes caractérisations physico-chimiques (DSC, GPC, FTIR, viscosimétrie) ont permis de relier des changements morphologiques à différentes échelles du matériau à l’évolution de ces grandeurs mécaniques macroscopiques. Dans un second temps, une modélisation de la transition ductile-fragile du PA11 au cours du vieillissement a été mise en place. L’évolution de descripteurs physico-chimiques a été intégrée dans le formalisme d’un modèle mécanique développé à IFPEN pour rendre compte du comportement biphasique des polymères semi-cristallins. Le modèle permet de décrire l’impact du vieillissement sur le comportement mécanique du PA11, en particulier l’initiation ainsi que la propagation d’une striction le cas échéant. Enfin, une modélisation de la rupture du PA11 par fragilisation est proposée<br>The prediction of the long-term behaviour of polyamides (PAs) is a major challenge for the structural design of various technological equipment in the field of energy and transport. PAs are very ductile when new, but they are sensitive to hydrolysis.Structure-properties relationships of PAs during ageing in water have been somewhat studied in literature. But little attention has been paid so far to the modeling of the mechanical behavior evolving with ageing in relation to the diffusion of water in the material.This work aims to be able to predict the ductile-brittle transition of polyamides, PA11 in particular, during ageing in temperature and acidic aqueous medium.The first part of the work focused on understanding the mechanical degradation of PA11 as a function of hydric and thermal ageing (at pH4 and at 110 ° C), based on an experimental campaign in order to link the evolution of the macroscopic mechanical behavior to that of physicochemical descriptors. First, acid and temperature ageing tests were performed to evaluate the long-term degradation of PA11. Then, in order to decorrelate the effects of the hydrolysis of the annealing effects, tests of thermal ageing only, in neutral environment, were carried out. Tensile tests at break and creep tests were then performed in order to measure possible changes in the mechanical properties during ageing. Different physicochemical characterizations (DSC, GPC, FTIR, viscosimetry) made it possible to link morphological changes at different scales of the material to the evolution of these macroscopic mechanical quantities.Secondly, a modeling of the ductile-brittle transition of PA11 during ageing was put in place. The evolution of physicochemical descriptors has been integrated into the formalism of a mechanical model developed at IFPEN to account for the biphasic behavior of semi-crystalline polymers. The model makes it possible to describe the impact of ageing on the mechanical behavior of PA11, in particular the initiation as well as the propagation of a neck if necessary. Finally, a model of the rupture of PA11 by embrittlement is proposed

Le filicide-suicide se définit comme la mort d'un enfant infligée par son parent et suivie du suicide de celui-ci. Sa spécificité est consacrée par une littérature criminologique presque exclusivement anglo-saxonne et scandinave. Initialement, notre projet de recherche avait pour objectif d'étudier le filicide-suicide « français » selon une perspective criminologique. Le filicidesuicide associe, en France comme ailleurs, un homicide, infraction pénale, et un suicide, non infraction. Le judiciaire n'est saisi qu'au stade de l'enquête dont le résultat écarte la qualification pénale. Le sanitaire constate et certifie les décès sans établir entre eux de lien organique. Victime(s) et auteur demeurent à jamais étrangers alors même que la mort les avait réunis. Le projet initial a donc pris une nouvelle direction. Contrairement aux études anglo-saxonnes et scandinaves, en France, toute recherche tentant d'approcher le filicide-suicide se heurte, dès les démarches exploratoires, au recueil de données utiles et pertinentes pour son analyse. Dès lors, notre travail de thèse s'est intéressé à explorer les conditions de la recherche en criminologie en France en s'appuyant sur l'exemple du filicide-suicide, comme fait démonstratif

Fiber-deployment of future telecommunications networks ("Next Generation Access" - NGA) is
currently a major challenge for sector-specific regulators as well as for investing firms. Although the
future socio-economic importance of new telecommunications networks is uncontroversial, the related
investment activities vary substantially in international comparison.
This work intends to identify the most important determinants of previous NGA deployment using
data from the EU27 member states for the years 2005 to 2010. For our analysis, we employ latest data
on NGA deployment, relevant competition and regulatory indicators as well as other supply and
demand side controls. Our econometric model incorporates: i) aggregated country level data; ii)
structurally modeled dynamics of the deployment process which allows us to disentangle long-term
and short-term effects; finally, iii) we argue that there is no endogeneity problem with respect to
investment activities and regulation since we refer to regulation in preceding broadband markets. For
our econometric analysis, we employ several dynamic panel data methods, such as GMM and
LSDVC.
Our results indicate that stricter previous broadband access regulation has a negative impact on NGA
deployment. As regards the dynamics of the adjustment process, we find that there are severe

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>The performance of beef heifers from eight until twelve months, grazing exclusively Italian ryegrass (Loluim multiflorum Lam.) pasture, ryegrass plus red clover (Trifolium pratense LE 116) and ryegrass plus 1% LW supplement, was evaluated. The grazing period was within July, 27th until October, 14th and a continuous variable stocking was used. A commercial ration (14% CP; 21.6% NDF and 59.6% TDN) daily supplied at 2 pm, was utilized as supplement. The studied variables were average daily gain (ADG), body condition (BC), stocking rate (SR), per area weight gain (AWG), daily accumulation rate of DM (DMAR), forage on offer (FO), green leaf on offer (GLO), green forage mass (GFM) and leaf: stem relationship (LSR). In the botanical composition of the pasture was evaluated: clover leaf, clover stem, ryegrass leaf, ryegrass stem and dead material components percentile in forage mass. The nutritive value apparently ingested by the animals was evaluated through crude protein (CP), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), total digestible nutrients (TDN), neutral
detergent fiber (NDF) and metabolizable energy (ME). The supplementation didn t affect studied variables (P>0.05). However, there was interference of pasture cycle (P<0.05). Animals were submitted to average values of forage mass of 1327.2 kg/ha of DM, forage offer of 10.5 kg de DM/100 of BW and leaf offer of 3.7 kg DM/100 kg of BW. Daily body weight gain of heifers varied with different alternative of pasture
utilization. Stocking rate (SR) and body gain per area (ABG) were greater (P<0.05) for supplemented animals, compared with animals exclusively on pasture. The use of supplementation provides an additive and replacement effect in the intake of dry matter of the grazing heifers.<br>- Foi avaliado o desempenho de bezerras de corte, dos oito aos doze meses de idade, em pastagem exclusiva de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), azevém consorciado com trevo vermelho (Trifolium pratense LE 116) e bezerras em pastagem
de azevém recebendo suplemento na proporção de 1 % do peso vivo (PV) por dia. O período de pastejo foi de 27 de julho a 14 de outubro, o método de pastejo foi o de lotação contínua com número variável de animais. O suplemento utilizado foi ração comercial (17% PB; 23,6% FDN e 59,6% NDT), fornecida diariamente às 14:00 h. As variáveis estudadas foram ganho de peso médio diário (GMD), condição corporal (CC), carga animal (CA) e ganho de peso por área (GPA), taxa de acúmulo diário de MS (TAD), oferta de forragem (OF), oferta de lâminas foliares verdes (OLFV). Na
composição botânica da pastagem foram avaliados os percentuais dos componentes: folha de trevo, colmo de trevo, folha de azevém, colmo de azevém e material morto e
outras espécies na MF. O valor nutritivo do pasto aparentemente consumido pelos animais foi avaliado pelos teores de proteína bruta (PB), digestibilidade in vitro da
matéria orgânica (DIVMO), nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e energia metabolizável (EM). Estas variáveis não foram afetadas pela suplementação (P>0,05). Houve interferência, no entanto (P<0,05) do ciclo da
pastagem. Os animais foram submetidos a valores médios de massa de forragem de 1327,2 kg/ha de MS, oferta de forragem de 10,5 kg de MS/100 de PV e oferta de lâminas foliares de 3,7 kg de MS/100 kg de PV. O GMD das bezerras varia com as diferentes alternativas de uso da pastagem. A CA e GPA foram superiores (P<0,05) para os animais suplementados em pastejo, quando comparado ao uso exclusivo da pastagem. A utilização de suplementação proporciona efeito aditivo e substitutivo no consumo de matéria seca pelas bezerras em pastejo.

Ce defaut de fonctionnement est en parti attribue aux surfaces d'arseniure de gallium situees de part et d'autres de la grille. La stabilisation des composants requiert donc de la passivation de ces zones grace a des materiaux de haute qualite dielectrique realisant une interface stable avec gaas. Dans cette optique, les proprietes physico-chimiques et electriques de films de silice et de nitrure de silicium deposes en phase vapeur assiste par plasma sont etudiees en fonction du rapport des debits des gaz employe, de la temperature du substrat, de la puissance et de la frequence de l'excitation du plasma. . . Cette approche systematique permet de determiner des parametres de depot qui donnent des films ayant tres bonnes proprietes electriques: une resistivite de 10**(14) a 10**(16) ohm. Cm et un champ de claquage superieur a 10**(6) v/cm sont ainsi obtenus apres un recuit dont on soulignera l'importance. Apres mise au point d'une preparation de surface avant depot, la densite d'etats sur la bande interdite du semiconducteur a l'interface gaas/si::(3)n::(4) presente un minimum de 7. 10**(11) ev**(-2). Les depots ainsi optimalises sont utilises pour la passivation des transistors mesfet gaas. Le recouvrement d'un composant par une couche mince introduit une modification de ses caracteristiques statiques; celle-ci est expliquee conjointement par un effet piezo-electrique et par un effet de surface inherent au mode de depot. Suivant les resultats obtenus en tests de fiabilite, le nitrure de silicium s'avere etre le meilleur choix pour reussir la passivation du composant. De plus, des pretraitements par plasma et une meilleure adaptation du procede de fabrication au mode de passivation sont proposes pour ameliorer encore la stabilite a long terme des caracteristiques des transistors

century has brought about an equally vast body of literature concerning the general
motives and features of the engagement. The broad nature of such literature begs for
more focused and localised analysis that are able to complement and inform the ongoing
debate. This thesis aims to better understand how China’s policy towards Mozambique
affects the latter’s economic development. With this objective in mind each of the four
empirical chapters provides a fresh view over some of the most salient dimensions and
recent processes related to China’s involvement with Mozambique. The following is
analysed: China’s trade and investment with Mozambique; the Asian power’s economic
involvement in Mozambique’ agriculture sector; the participation of the China-Exim
Bank in the Mphanda Nkuwa dam negotiation process; and finally the participation of
Mozambique in the China-sponsored multilateral organisation of the Macau Forum. The
methodology used is primarily reliant on the analysis of secondary material
supplemented by a small number of informal interviews. The core secondary material
includes government investment agencies statistics, analysis of official documents,
policies and analysis of material such as NGO reports, studies and media reports. The
analysis corroborates the view that it mostly depends upon Mozambique’s governance
actors to make China’s engagement work towards its economic development and that
there is not a static set of monolithic neo-colonial tendencies overriding China’s
commitments towards the African country.

Durant les dernières décennies, la Péninsule Antarctique a été identifiée comme étant la région où le réchauffement récent est le plus marqué dans l’Hémisphère Sud. Cependant, au-delà de la période instrumentale, la variabilité climatique Holocène de cette partie du globe est en grande partie inconnue. Cette absence de données limite notre capacité à évaluer les l’amplitude des changements actuels dans le contexte de la variabilité historique ainsi que les mécanismes de forçage sous-jacents. Nous avons ainsi ciblé nos analyses sur des enregistrements sédimentaires prélevés à l’Est et à l’Ouest de la Péninsule Antarctique, avec pour objectif d’étendre les connaissances spatiales et temporelles des conditions de l’océan de surfaces dans ce secteur de l’Antarctique au cours du dernier siècle, du dernier millénaire ainsi que durant l’Holocène. La méthodologie de cette thèse est basée sur une comparaison multi-proxies qui inclut, comme outils principaux, les assemblages des diatomées et les biomarqueurs spécifiques de diatomées (HBIs). Nous avons pu ainsi documenter la réponse régionale environnementale aux variations climatiques à différentes échelles de temps, et définir les mécanismes forçant sur la variabilité des conditions d’océan de surface ainsi que la formation du couvert de banquise en Péninsule Antarctique. La comparaison de nos enregistrements avec des données issues des carottes de glace, a permis de mettre en évidence le rôle important des changements d’intensité des cellules atmosphériques sur la dynamique de la circulation océanique, la durée du cycle saisonnier de banquise et la productivité siliceuse<br>The Antarctic Peninsula has been identified during the last decades as the region from the Southern Hemisphere which is the most affected by the recent warming. However, beyond the instrumental period, the Holocene climate variability of this area is largely unknown, limiting our ability to evaluate the current changes within the context of historical variability and underpin the underlying forcing mechanisms. We focused our analysis on sedimentary sequences from the Eastern and Western side of the Antarctic Peninsula, in order to expand the spatial and temporal knowledge of sea-surface conditions over the last century, the last millennium and throughout the Holocene in this Antarctic area. The inferences are based on a multi-proxy comparison mainly using diatom assemblages and diatom specific biomarkers (HBIs). We documented the regional environmental response to climate changes at different time scales and described the forcing mechanisms on the sea-surface conditions and sea ice cover variability in Antarctic Peninsula. Comparing our results with ice core data allowed us to highlight the large impact of atmospheric forcings on the oceanic circulation, the seasonal sea ice dynamics and the siliceous productivity

Les mécanismes de solidification dans les alliages Fe#7#5Al#2#5 et Fe#7#5#-#xAl#2#5B#x#(#0#,#0#5#-#1#) (pds%) élaborés par trempe de coulée plane sur roue sont analyses, nous dégageons l'influence des paramètres d'élaboration sur la microstructure finale des rubans (taille et forme des grains, structure dendritique, texture). Les structures de solidifications sont interprétées a l'aide d'un modèle thermique simulant le refroidissement et la solidification des alliages Fe#7#5Al#2#5 dans la flaque; entre autre, nous étudions avec précision les contributions du coefficient de transfert thermique sur la germination, la recalescence, et la déstabilisation du front de solidification. Par ailleurs, des mesures pyrométriques réalisées a la surface des rubans pendant la trempe ainsi qu'une étude de recuits a hautes températures, expliquent l'influence de l'atmosphère sur la microstructure finale des rubans, les rubans élaborés sous vide subissant une importante croissance des grains a l'état solide dans l'atmosphère de trempe des leur décollement de la roue. De façon générale, les rubans présentent une zone de grains equiaxes cote roue surmontée d'une couche de grains colonnaires débouchant cote libre. L'épaisseur de la zone équiaxe par rapport a celle de la zone colonnaire augmente avec l'épaisseur du ruban et diminue quand on rajoute du bore. All this has inspired a thorough study on this topic from the perspective of the physical education and by means of an "Action-Research" process.<br/>The aim of this research was that some students in the fourth year of ESO (the last compulsory school year in the Spanish educational system) should acquire a critical attitude towards the body-building and body-care obsession. This study has been carried out by designing and using an Educational Multimedia Resource.<br/>This educational research is to be justified in the curricular foundations of the Spanish educational system and it aims to define clearly the core of this study: the development of a critical attitude. Several teaching strategies are designed, described and assessed, so that students can develop this critical thinking.<br/>All in all, the final goal is that students are able to develop a critical attitude while working from their own experiences.

La caractérisation et modélisation de « nanohorns » monofeuillets (SWNH) et de forêts de nanotubes par microscopie analytique sont présentées ainsi que leurs applications pour le traitement du cancer. Dans une première partie, nous introduirons les méthodes de microscopie et de spectroscopie utilisées dans nos expériences. Nous étudierons ensuite le processus de croissance de forêts de nanotubes de carbone monofeuillets (dans le contexte d’une collaboration avec l'AIST au Japon). Les SWNH, leur structure, propriétés de remplissage et de fonctionnarisation seront analysés et une nouvelle méthode sera présentée pour l'étude de la porosité de matériaux inorganique en EELS. Des calculs ab-initio seront aussi utilisés pour étudier l'effet des défauts dans les parois des SWNH sur les phénomènes d'oxydation et de remplissage des SWNH. Finalement, nous étudierons les possibles applications de SWNH dans le domaine pharmaceutique, et en particulier pour les traitements cancéreux<br>In this manuscript, we will expose the characterization and modelling of Single Wall Nanohorns (SWNH) and Nanotube Forests by analytical microscopy and the functionalization of SWNH for drug delivery applications. Firstly, we will introduce the microscopy and spectroscopy methods used for our experiments. We will then study the growth process of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) forests (within the framework of a collaboration with AIST, Japan). SWCH, their structure, modifications and filling properties will be analysed in details. An original method will be presented to study the porosity of inorganic material with EELS. Ab initio calculation will also be used to explore the effect of the defects present in the SWNH wall on the oxidation and filling process. Dans le cadre du développement des aciers ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) pour le cœur des réacteurs nucléaires du futur, ce travail s'est focalisé sur l'étude d'une nouvelle voie de synthèse inspirée du broyage réactif, consistant à remplacer le réactif Y2O3 par YFe3 et Fe2O3, et sur l'influence des conditions de synthèse sur les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes. Pour cela, des aciers ODS ont été synthétisés par broyage et recuit et des caractérisations multi-échelles ont été effectuées après chaque étape de la synthèse. En particulier, on a utilisé la sonde atomique tomographique et la diffusion des neutrons aux petits angles. On a ainsi montré que le procédé inspiré du broyage réactif permet la synthèse d'un acier ODS mais qu'il ne modifie pas les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes. Plus généralement, la forme des réactifs de broyage n'a pas d'influence sur la formation des nano-oxydes. Ensuite, on a mis en évidence que la germination des nano-oxydes pouvait commencer au cours du broyage avant de se poursuivre avec une cinétique très rapide au cours du recuit. Les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes ainsi formés peuvent être contrôlées en faisant varier les paramètres de broyage (intensité, température et atmosphère) et de recuit (durée et température). Enfin, on a montré qu'il était nécessaire de contrôler les conditions de broyage pour maîtriser l'état final d'un acier ODS.

This research evaluated the strategic management practices of the Kingsgate Clothing Group, which operates within the clothing and textile industry. The industry is undergoing dramatic changes since the opening up of the South African economy and the advent of globalisation. These changes have occurred within the political and economic spectrum and include factors such as trade and tariff agreements, changes in labour legislation, exports, illegal imports which has impacted on the organisation. A framework on strategic management was developed highlighting the factors necessary for strategy development, key issues in the external enviroment, strategic capabilities, organisational structure and culture and leadership issues. Various strategic management tools were used to analyse the Kingsgate Clothing Group's present strategy in the light of the changing industry conditions. These tools included value chain analysis, financial analysis and SWOT analysis. How to survive and sustain growth momentum in the highly competitive and fast change environment has always been a critical issue for academia and business. To expand economic scale and to integrate supply chain shall be essential and inevitable for HA firms in a relative small domestic market, such as Taiwan. Japanese HA firms may overcome the industry drawback of slim margin with their advantage of huge capital and high globalization. For most of Taiwanese HA SMEs, confronting with challenge from Japanese HA firms, the key to win the battle in the short run is to exert their existing advantage of cost efficiency and to expand the market share in addition to develop their core competence that supports the firm to grow. In the long run, they have to keep up faster rollout of new products with lower cost.
Main topics of this research with respect to the industry of compressor for air conditioner (“the Industry”) are:
1. To discuss the current status and the problems being confronted with the Industry.
2. Trend of the compressor industry in the future.
3. Strategies for global competition
Rechi Precision Corp. (“Rechi”), the largest compressor manufacturer in Taiwan and top-four player in the world, was chosen for the Case Study of this research. After the overall and in depth research, this research is trying to:
(1) Analyze the growth path of Rechi from the perspective of integration of supply chain;
(2) Discuss the financial strategies required for expansion of vertical integration and growth thru internationalization in an attempt to boost up revenue and to accomplish the competitive advantages, including control over supply chain and cost efficiency.
Based on the case study of Rechi, this research made the following conclusion and recommendation for the Industry:
1. Conclusion: The Industry is highly cyclical and climate related. Price war frequently happened due to the cut in price of air conditioner every year and the massive expansion of capacity.
2. Recommendation: The short-term goal should first focus on “cost efficiency” while expanding the capacity; maintain competitive pricing but not get stuck in price war while trying to increase the market share. Secondly, move to proactive “Brand Name” model from passive OEM model so as to improve profit margin. Thirdly, closely monitor the rivalry from competitors in South Korea. Try to reach mutual understanding or make alliance with them to avoid direct pricing competition. As to the long-term goal, to achieve horizontal integration, one stop shopping service. To engage sales and pricing agreement with good customers to reduce expansion risk.

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.<br>The semiarid and arid areas of the eastern part of Ethiopia have suffered a series of droughts and famines in the years 1999/2000, 2003/2004, 2007 and 2011. Absence/decline of rainfall in two of the rainy seasons locally called Dihra and Gu as being the major fact behind drought. Besides, lack of appropriate monitoring techniques aggravate the situation of drought in the study area. In a region where the numbers of meteorological stations are not sufficient enough to monitor the onset and extent of drought, remotely sensed data presents fast and economical way of information as the ground condition reflects the overall condition of rainfall and soil moisture. In this study, the drought monitoring approach is developed using Terra-MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation index (NDVI) and Land surface Temperature (LST) level-3 products. The approach integrates the land surface reflectance and thermal properties as well as the NDVI changes to identify the extent and pattern of the past drought years. From the NDVI versus LST scatter plot, we extract Vegetation Temperature condition index (VTCI) to map the variability and trend of the drought years. The year 2003 was found to be the driest year (more than 90% of the region affected by drought) and the season that showed increasing intensity of drought being Dihra. The correlation (r > 0.7) between rainfall and VTCI across the major meteorological stations suggested that the index could be used as good indicator of drought as rainfall does. The overall trend of drought condition for selected drought years suggested that eastern and southern regions will experience more severe drought in the coming year. Moreover, VTCI value for October from 2000-2011 showed similar increase intensity of drought condition. In addition, it was observed that sparse vegetation and shrub land are highly variable and bare soil region is consistently dry. Wetter regions were found in the area where the elevation is above 1500m above sea level.

Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.<br>Drought is a complex phenomenon that afflicts huge areas worldwide with high spatial and temporal
variability. Being under influence of the Mediterranean climate the Iberian Peninsula is per se prone
to droughts. In this study, we applied the Vegetation Condition Temperature Index for a
spatiotemporal drought analysis in Iberia. As a compound remote sensing drought index VTCI
incorporates information on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface
Temperature (LST). Suchlike, it overcomes the disadvantage of NDVI, which faces a lagged vegetation
response to droughts and makes it less suitable for real-time drought monitoring. We took
advantage of the full range of the VTCI scale and thus describe soil moisture conditions from ‘very
dry’ to ‘wet’. In order to study the effect of North Atlantic Oscillation on the establishment of
droughts during spring and summer, we correlated VTCI with the NAO winter index of one year. The
study was accomplished for the years 2001 until 2005; additionally we adjoined the years 2007 and
2010 for their strong positive (negative) NAO winter index. The results as presented in the VTCI time
series illustrate a typical ‘Mediterranean’ pattern with humid springs and persistently dry summers
inside the Mediterranean fraction of Iberia. At least two months in spring are regarded to be wet,
though with a high temporal and spatial variability: One area can be wet in one year and dry in the
next one. March often is drier than middle spring months exhibiting accumulated precipitation
deficiency of winter months, whereas a weak start into the growing season can be determining for
the crop harvest of one year. The summer months become persistently dry in the Mediterranean
region, while the North and Northwest as well as high elevation areas generally obtain sufficient
precipitation also during the warm season. Spring months are particularly important for vegetation
growth in terms of water availability, though the spatial and temporal pattern changes considerably
in the intra-annual perspective. We found a dipolar correlation between VTCI and NDVI particularly
in April and June. In April the NW of Iberia shows a high negative correlation between NAO and VTCI,
the SE a strong positive correlation. In June the pattern flips showing positive correlation in the NW
and negative correlation in the SE. The other summer months exhibit a similar pattern as June
though with less significant correlation, while the pattern during the spring months alters, which coincides with the climatic variability during this season. The correlation findings accord with
observations from the VTCI time series: We gave the example of the Duero Basin in the NW, where
in April (negative correlation) indeed NAO+ years were drier (due to decreased VTCI) than NAOyears
(increased VTCI) and the SE exhibited the opposite behaviour. Similar findings can be
evidenced for the NW and SE of Iberia in June and July and the Balearic Islands in March. In terms of
land cover NAO influences geographical areas rather than certain land cover types, which can be
explained by the widely human induced landscape pattern of Iberia. From the land use classes
agricultural lands and low vegetation are the classes most vulnerable to droughts; forests are the
most resilient land classes.
The study of correlation between a certain NAO winter index and drought occurrences is particularly
interesting for the development of an outlook system of soil moisture for the period of highest
vegetation activity in spring. The study detected come correlations between NAO and VTCI that
indeed find spatial response on Iberian landmass.

The thesis evaluates several hundred one-day-ahead VaR forecasting models in the time period between the years 2004 and 2009 on data from six world stock indices - DJI, GSPC, IXIC, FTSE, GDAXI and N225. The models model mean using the AR and MA processes with up to two lags and variance with one of GARCH, EGARCH or TARCH processes with up to two lags. The models are estimated on the data from the in-sample period and their forecasting ac- curacy is evaluated on the out-of-sample data, which are more volatile. The main aim of the thesis is to test whether a model estimated on data with lower volatility can be used in periods with higher volatility. The evaluation is based on the conditional coverage test and is performed on each stock index sepa- rately. Unlike other works in this eld of study, the thesis does not assume the log-returns to be normally distributed and does not explicitly select a partic- ular conditional volatility process. Moreover, the thesis takes advantage of a less known conditional coverage framework for the measurement of forecasting accuracy.
