Annotation:
Myanmar is richly endowed in natural resources that include tin, tungsten, copper, gold, zinc, lead, nickel, and silver, as well as gemstones. The material covered over a nine-day field trip explores the country’s complex geology, which reflects a collisional history stretching from the Late Triassic to at least Miocene, sited at the eastern end of the India-Asia suture. The country can be divided into three principal metallotects: the Wuntho-Popa magmatic arc, with granites and associated porphyry-type and epithermal Cu-Au mineralization; the Slate Belt (also called the Mogok-Mandalay-Mergui Belt), with multiple precollisional I-type and postcollisional S-type crustal melt granites that host significant tin-tungsten mineralization, and which also are host to a number of orogenic gold deposits; and the Shan Plateau with massive sulfide-type and also MVT-style lead-zinc-silver deposits.

Annotation:
Neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are progressive diseases of the aging population with currently few therapeutic options. While aggregation and deposition of disease-specific proteins link the pathologies of these diseases, targeting these aggregating proteins with therapeutics has not yet been successful in clinical trial. This chapter profiles metals (copper, zinc, and iron) as alternative drug targets for neurodegeneration. Complex changes to metals occur in these neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulating evidences have demonstrated that perturbations to metal homeostasis contribute to the progression of neuronal dysfunction and death. Importantly, several phase II trials have shown that correcting metal dyshomeostasis improves clinical outcomes; the chapter argues that it is now time to explore the therapeutic utility of metal-based drugs in larger, phase III trials.

Over the past several decades, there has been a sharp increase in psychiatric diseases but relatively little attention to improving poor nutritional patterns that affect mental health conditions. Long-term nutrient deprivation results in neuroinflammation, which contributes to causing mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorder, and schizophrenia. A growing body of research substantiates the benefits of supplementing many essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, the B complex vitamins, vitamin E, and the minerals magnesium, iron, zinc, choline, calcium, and selenium to help prevent and treat many mental illnesses. These nutrients are often limited in the standard Western diet. Importantly, it is not just one single nutrient that is important to optimizing brain health but all the nutrients working in concert in a healthy, well-balanced approach that helps to optimize brain function and prevent disease. This chapter reviews the various nutrients involved in maintaining optimal brain health.

Appleton, Naomi, Hrsg. Narrative Visions and Visual Narratives in Indian Buddhism. Equinox Publishing Ltd., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1558/isbn.9781800501300.

Annotation:
This volume explores the interaction between text and image in Indian Buddhist contexts, including not only the complex relationship between verbal stories and visual representations at Indian sites, but also the ways in which visual imagery is used within textual narratives. The chapters are authored by a mixture of textual scholars and art historians, bringing together different disciplinary perspectives in order to seek a richer understanding of how text and art relate, and of the role of narrative imagery in different media and contexts. The book opens with an introduction that explores what narratives and visual narratives are, and why we might want to study narrative images alongside imagery-rich literary narratives. The volume is then divided into three parts. The chapters in “Part I: Visual Narratives” (Zaghet, Reddy, Zin) explore visual depictions of stories in their own right; those in “Part II: Narrative Networks” (Mace, Appleton & Clark, Strong) seek to understand the relationship between specific visual and verbal narratives; and those in “Part III: Narrative Visions” (Gummer, Fiordalis, Walters) primarily investigate how visual imagery and visualisation work in textual narratives. The volume seeks to bridge the divide that traditionally exists between textual scholars and art historians, and to challenge the contributors to think beyond the usual boundaries of our work.
