Currently, neither the efficiency nor the effectiveness is sufficient in the area of the assemble optimization that commonly involves the genetic algorithm. A novel method to solve the cumbersome problem in the optimization of assembly sequences was proposed. On the basis of the assembly constraint matrix, the optimized assembly sequence is obtained with the proposed evaluating factors of the process requirement. That is the evolution of the original genetic algorithm to a certain extent. The effectiveness of the proposed method was proved by the comparison with the ant colony algorithm.

The definition of «restoration-reconstructive transformation» (RRT) is given as a complex process of interconnected restoration and reconstruction changes in buildings, open urban spaces and urban architectural environment as a whole to increase value and integrity and move them to a new qualitative level. Introduced as uniting all restoration and reconstructive qualitative changes – transformations. Depending on the activity of the intervention, four degrees of RRT were identified: preservation, amplification, correction and change. Preservation and amplification – referred to the restoration, correction and change – to the reconstructive transformations. For each degree of PPT, the corresponding methods are highlighted. The restoration ones correspond to the I and II degrees of the RRT – preservation and amplification. Reconstructive – III and IV degrees of RRT – to correction and change. Their classification is proposed: 1) according to the activity of intervention on: preserving, restoring, renewing and transforming. Preserving and restoring – restoration, renewing and transforming – reconstructive; 2) for the implementation of qualitative changes at different system levels: urban planning, volumetric and functional. Based on the generalization of existing problems that violate the sustainable development of small historical towns and must be solved during the RRT in them, namely: urban planning, architectural, utilitarian-functional, infrastructural, ecological and socio-economic, 5 components of the complex process of RRT their historical centers were identified – ecological, historical-cultural, infrastructural, social and economic. For each component the tasks are outlined. They should be solved at the selected 4 system levels: urban planning, volumetric, functional, socio-economic.

Conventional approaches for process planning of manufacturing operations preset fixed process means and process tolerances for all operations and permit outputs to be distributed around these fixed values, provided that the final outputs meet acceptable specifications. These approaches are inappropriate for high-value and precision manufacturing processes, especially those where a complex part may suffer from process deterioration. The problem is that in these approaches, process means and process tolerances are considered to be independent decision variables, whereby the resultant process means are equal to or close to the design targets of the blueprint dimensions. In addition, they do not consider the phenomena of process shifting or deterioration as factors of manufacturing operations, but assume that process variability is small in comparison to the quality requirements. Therefore, in this study a process optimization model is introduced that simultaneously takes process means and process tolerances into account. Furthermore, it reduces process variability and offsets process deterioration by means of sequential operation adjustment. With the scheme developed in this study built into the control system, a real-time system for integrated process control and modification for making adaptive process planning can be realized.

AbstractErection planning in shipbuilding is a highly complex process. When a process change happens for some reason, it is often difficult to identify how many factors are affected and estimate how sensitive these factors can be. To optimize the planning and replanning of the shipbuilding plan for the best production performance, a data-driven approach for shipbuilding erection planning is proposed, which is composed of an erection plan model, identification of major factors related to the erection plan, and a data-driven algorithm to apply shipbuilding operation data for creating plans and forecasting, for plan adjustment, future availabilities of shipyard resources including machines, equipment, and man power. Through data clustering, the relevant factors are identified as a result of plan change, and critical equipment health management is carried out through data-driven anomaly detection. A case study is implemented, and the result shows that the proposed data-driven method is able to reschedule the shipbuilding plans smoothly.

With the fast growth of the market forMEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) devices, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) systems for MEMS are essential for the appropriate division of labor between MEMS design and fabrication. Although several CAD systems for MEMS devices are commercially available, CAPP systems for MEMS are still underdeveloped, and few systems have been investigated. The purpose of this study is to prototype a CAPP system for MEMS for non-expert MEMS designers. MEMS device geometry, a complex layered structure made of multiple materials, is represented as a solid model called a device model. The system has twomain functions. In processextraction function, all feasible fabrication processes of the device are exhaustively derived from the device model using 3D fabrication features as clues. In manufacturable-geometry-estimation function, the expected 3D geometry of the device that will actually be fabricated by the derived process, which might differ from the original device model, is estimated. Process emulation using a commercial emulator and examination by expert researchers confirm that the derived process plans and the expected 3D geometries of the device are feasible and plausible.

Abstract With the popularity of stereo printing technology, 3D printers are widely used in industry, manufacturing, medicine, and other industries to quickly manufacture small devices. Before 3D printing, it is necessary to plan the printing path. Unreasonable printing path will not only increase the time consumption of printing products, but also cause printing failure due to the accumulation of stress and deformation in the printing process. In order to overcome the superimposed stress and deformation in the process of printing thin-walled complex devices, this article introduces the idea of balanced stress based on the basic damage of the path planning based on the potential field method. In the printing process, the ring path, island path and cross path are added to overcome the stress deformation phenomenon and improve the printing quality. Finally, the 3D printer is used to manufacture thin-walled complex devices, and the feasibility of the balanced potential field method is verified by physical comparison.

The practice shows that complex lapping motion trajectory can decrease the adverse effects caused by the lapping direction which has a great influence on the lapping of the natural single crystalline diamond cutting tool. For example, addition of a reciprocating motion can get better lapping performance and surface roughness. On some kinds of natural diamond cutting tool lapping machines a further improvement is made by designing an additional planetary spindle to provide planetary motion to the main shaft, which offers a more complex motion trajectory. With an increase in degrees of freedom of the lapping machine, it becomes difficult for technicians to master a good suit of motion process parameters. This paper proposes a set of methods to plan the lapping trajectory with respect to the machine that can perform complex lapping motion. Firstly, the proposed method designed a statistical parameter which is the variance of the direction angle distribution for the lapping velocity and its calculation method to evaluate the complexity of the trajectory. And then the multi-body kinematics model was established by using Simulink tool box in Matlab software for the purpose of model kinematics simulation and outputting data for calculation of the statistical parameter above. Finally, the genetic algorithm was used to find the best motion parameters of every shaft under certain restrictions. The advantage of the set of lapping trajectory planning method presented in this paper is that it combines the powerful multi-body simulation and signal processing ability of Simulink tool box and the characteristics of the genetic algorithm in almost no limitation on awaiting optimization function and suitable for complicated problems. So the method provides not only a way for planning complex diamond lapping trajectory but also a general approach to solve the problem on machine motion process parameters optimization.

The planning process is a multiactor, multilevel process, and the techniques we need for it must be suitable for all the protagonists involved. Moreover, the difficulty in dealing with the complexity of urban systems and the related difficulty of analyzing and forecasting are twofold: one kind of difficulty lies in the complexity of the system itself, and the other is due to the actions of actors, which are "acts of freedom." Correspondingly, the process of urban planning requires a set of techniques and models that have proved to be of great potential for management of communication, participation, consensus-building and system' simulation. In this paper, we describe the peculiarity of the articulated set of tools that should be used to support planning, allowing the setting up and management of processes of participation and communication tailored to the needs of specific projects — a set of friendly tools that make the relationship between technicians, clients and users effective and efficacious. Following this discussion we present a very flexible software environment based on cellular automata (Cellular Automata General Environment — CAGE) that can be used to simulate planning decisions and can be coupled with other modules dealing with the "social side" of complexity.

Due to complex process and high difficult operation for large-scale products assembly, the application of virtual assembly (VA) has an important significance and also an actual value. In this paper the key techniques of VA for large-scale complex products are proposed, and their assembly characteristics (such as their organization form, human participation, process planning and optimization and so on) are analyzed. First, a new virtual environment (VE) system considering human activities is set up. Second, an integration approach is realized to transform data from CAD to VA system, and a hybrid method on the basis of virtual reality (VR) and intelligent algorithm is applied to optimize and evaluate assembly process planning. Moreover, assembly documents generation and Web training for assembly workers are implemented. Finally, an application case of the VA system for a complex product is given, and further work is pointed out.

Product redesign is hardly a straightforward process, especially for complex products. The existence of intricate interrelationships between different components of product design architecture makes it more susceptible to change propagation phenomenon. In this case, redesign risk is not easy to predict since the change effects are being propagated to other components from the initiating change component. Because of this condition, choosing the right initiating change component is essential to control redesign process risks, apart from being able to successfully satisfy the product requirements. With this notion, this paper proposes a method that systematically ranks all components of an existing product design based on their estimated redesign risk. By having this information, designers can make a better redesign planning. The demonstration of this method is presented through an example aircraft redesign case study.

A sequence planning algorithm based on multiple-constraint model was proposed to solve the problems in the bending process of complex workpiece. By employing a heuristic search based A* algorithm, the sequence planning was converted to a generalized shortest path problem, and then a multiple-constraint model which includes the factors of bending feasibility, dimensional accuracy and processing efficiency was introduced to optimize the search process. A bend sequence planning system has been realized based on this algorithm. The testing results of the system indicate that the algorithm is efficient and stability, and the planning time of complex bending workpiece was reduced effectively, especially for the workpieces which don’t have the valid bending process.

Process planning is an essential component of computer aided process planning (CAPP), which involves operations selection from design features and operations sequencing of these selected operations. It makes process planning a complex combinatorial optimization problem to conduct of these two steps simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a cooperative simulated annealing (CoSA) approach for the process planning problem to minimize total manufacturing cost. The proposed CoSA algorithm employed a novel optimization strategy different from all the existing approaches in the literature. Simulated annealing was utilized to optimize the four components of a process plan individually and sequentially. The approach is tested on two parts from the literature and compared with other approaches. The computation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The generic framework for planning and decision support presented in this paper and referred to as systemic planning (SP) is the result of research work carried out by the Decision Modelling Group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). More specifically, SP theory and methodology development has interchanged with practical application and testing of SP in a number of cases. SP is based on combining and operationalising five different systems thinking approaches: functional, interpretive, emancipatory, post-modern and complexity-oriented that are seen to span current systems thinking. These approaches are behind five formulated modes of enquiry (MOEs) that make up some of the iteratively interwoven steps in a formulated SP process, which is assisted by a study-specific subset of methods. These are selected from a toolbox of seven soft (qualitative) and seven hard (quantitative) operations research (OR) methods. The paper is disposed as follows: After an introduction that outlines the five systems thinking approaches and their MOEs, the paper presents SP in an overview as concerns process and tools and SP as a group proces. Then follows an application example where the potential of SP is demonstrated on the planning of a large transport infrastructure case concerning the Rail Baltica transport project, which is part of the EU’s North Sea - Baltic TEN-T corridor. The case shows how issues around growth and sustainability need to be explicitly considered in the planning of large new transport infrastructure. Finally, following a discussion of the main features of SP, some findings and a perspective are stated.

A blackboard based intelligent control system has been developed for a family of complex non-equilibrium materials processes. The system is being tested in the laboratory for control of a particular high risk, high value-added step in the manufacture of carbon-carbon composites. The system uses knowledge based methods in several fundamental ways to fill gaps left by control theory and process models. Most notable of these are (1) inferring from indirect measurements and history the process state at multiple, changing levels of abstraction, (2) anticipating problems and planning actions to reach goal (end of process) states, (3) selecting, executing and interpreting approximate models to predict process progression and (4) changing control objectives as the physical situation changes. The system has been demonstrated to substantially reduce processing time.

The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 ushered in a new era in transportation planning, transforming the missions of transportation departments into more diverse agendas that include information management and long-range planning. Today's transportation officials face a complex task. Success in transportation planning is measured not just in terms of connectivity and operational efficiency, but in the ability to respond to a host of complicated concerns; the ability to achieve a variety of operational, managerial, and financial objectives; and in proficiency in involving the public in the entire transportation planning process. The Colorado Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Colorado at Denver, conducted a three-phase investigation on the development of customer focus in the statewide transportation planning process. From this systematic methodology, the research team established a series of recommendations for developing a customer focus in the statewide transportation planning process. These recommendations were developed in several areas including broadening the mission and process; strengthening public involvement in project orientation; improving organization flexibility; and implementing marketing orientation, market research process, and techniques and approaches for dealing with high priority public involvement issues.

The complex process planning problem is modeled as a combinatorial optimization problem with constraints in this paper. An ant colony optimization (ACO) approach has been developed to deal with process planning problem by simultaneously considering activities such as sequencing operations, selecting manufacturing resources, and determining setup plans to achieve the optimal process plan. A weighted directed graph is conducted to describe the operations, precedence constraints between operations, and the possible visited path between operation nodes. A representation of process plan is described based on the weighted directed graph. Ant colony goes through the necessary nodes on the graph to achieve the optimal solution with the objective of minimizing total production costs (TPC). Two cases have been carried out to study the influence of various parameters of ACO on the system performance. Extensive comparative experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed approach.

The complex large-scale integrated open systems (CLIOS) process is an overarching mechanism for considering systems, especially those exhibiting nested complexity, in which both the physical and the institutional aspects are complex. A special case of the CLIOS process is regional strategic transportation planning. New technologies, such as intelligent transportation systems, allow consideration of the planning, management, operations, and maintenance of transportation systems at the regional scale. Although the technological issues in advancing to this scale have proved tractable, the institutional issues concerned with deploying these systems across political jurisdictions with different measures of performance and different cultural perspectives has proved quite difficult. This paper explores processes for studying these institutional questions and integrating a number of concepts into the process: technological change, sustainability, real options, supply chain management, the various transport modes, and social, political, and economic factors. The paper serves as a case study of tailoring the CLIOS process into a process specifically designed to systematically address particular issues, in this case, regional strategic transportation planning.

The function of a process planning system is to determine the methods by which a product is to be manufactured economically and competitively. In a modern manufacturing environment, a process planning system consists of highly trained people and complex software. The plans prepared by a process planning system are not always executed as planned. It is useful if the system can discover why plans fail, when they do fail. In order to learn why plans fail, the system must analyse a number of plans, both successful and unsuccessful, to find patterns in the failures of plans. This type of analysis is difficult for people, who are much better at analysing single events than multiple events. The aim of the project described here is to design and implement a computer program which will help human planners in a process planning system to understand why plans fail. To achieve this aim, a program called IMAFO (Intelligent MAnufacturing FOreman) has been developed. IMAFO uses decision tree induction to analyse examples of both successful and unsuccessful plans. The difficulties presented by this application are discussed and solutions are presented. Problems addressed include finding an appropriate set of attributes for describing the plans, using data efficiently, consolidating input from distinct sources, and presenting decision trees in an understandable form. Potential applications and directions for future research are considered.

The focus of this paper is on CAPP for parts manufacture in systems of definite process capabilities, involving the use of multi-axis machining centers for parts shaping and grinding machines for finishing. It presents in particular a decision making scheme for setup determination as a part of generative process planning. The planning procedure consists of two stages. The first stage is associated with generic setup determination applying tool accessibility analysis to machined features and reasoning based on geometrical product specification (GPS). The second stage involves machine specific setup planning considering the availability and capability of machines on a shop floor through setup merging. The impact of dimensional and geometric tolerance as well as the surface roughness of relatively complex mechanical element on the generated process plan with several setups was presented. The relevant reasoning mechanism within a decision making scheme on generated process alternatives is shown based on a numeric case.

Parallel assembly sequence planning (PASP) greatly impacts on efficiency of assembly process. In traditional methods, large scale of matrix calculation still limits efficiency of PASP for complex products. A novel PASP method is proposed to address this issue. To avoid matrix calculation, the synchronized assembly Petri net (SAPN) is firstly established to describe the precedence relationships. Associated with the SAPN model, the PASP process can be implemented via particle swarm optimization based on bacterial chemotaxis (PSOBC). Characterized by an attraction-repulsion phase, PSOBC not only prevents premature convergence to a high degree, but also keeps a more rapid convergence rate than standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Finally, feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified via a case study. With different assembly parallelism degrees, optimization results show that assembly efficiency of the solution calculated by PSOBC method is 9.0%, 4.2%, and 3.1% better than the standard PSO process.
