Background: The aim of the study was to assess the long term results of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms at the Helsinki University Central Hospital 1996–2004 with a special emphasis on elective conversion procedures and their outcome. Methods: Treatment results and follow-up data of all 110 elective EVAR procedures performed in our institution were gathered prospectively and evaluated. Results: Conversion to open surgery was performed in 23 (21%) of 110 EVAR patients. 30-day mortality after elective stent-graft deployment was 0% as it was also on elective conversions (n = 20). Secondary elective conversions were performed due to infection in two and after failing stent-graft treatment in 12 patients. Six of the conversions were performed primarily. Three urgent conversions (3% overall) were performed: two of these patients died, corresponding to an overall mortality of 9% (2/23) in all conversions. Five-year aneurysm-related mortality after EVAR among patients with elective conversion was 0% and 19% in patients with secondary procedures other than elective conversions. Conclusions: As conversions seem to be hazardous only when performed in urgent situations, elective conversion could be an alternative treatment method in complex failing first-generation stent-grafts as it may reduce mortality associated with urgent conversions or repeated attempts to maintain graft integrity with endovascular procedures.

Recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) is used in the management of bleeding in patients with hemophilia. A generic biosimilar version of NovoSeven is also developed (AryoSeven). To compare the activation profile of NovoSeven and AryoSeven, 2 commercially available protein complex concentrates (PCCs) were used. Profilnine activated by RecombiPlasTin 2G resulted in conversions of prothrombin to prethrombin and thrombin at 5 to 30 minutes. However, addition of rFVIIa at final concentration range of 0.25 to 0.5 µg/mL to the same mixture resulted in total conversion of prothrombin to thrombin with a doublet at 36 kDa. Recombinant factor VIIa alone did not generate thrombin in native Beriplex, and the addition of rFVIIa to Beriplex failed to generate thrombin. Beriplex activated by RecombiPlasTin 2G resulted in complete conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Both NovoSeven and AryoSeven exhibited similar activation profiles. These studies indicate that the activation of PCCs by both rFVIIa preparations results in comparable generation of thrombin.

This article takes the post-secular mind-set as a heuristic lens to see the concept of conversion in a new, and perhaps refreshing, way. Missiology, taken here as the theological and therefore critical study of Christian mission, has always had a keen eye on conversion as a concept covering manifold experiences of change in religious faith, behaviour, and allegiance. However, the modern secular outlook has not been able to cater for a good missiological explanation and understanding of ongoing conversions. We will assess the work of two outspoken missiologists of our day, Marion Grau and Bryan Stone, in order to find out what a post-secular outlook on conversion may bring to light. Post-secularity may encourage missiologists to move beyond the secular imaginary of conversion as only a socioeconomic phenomenon on the one hand, and beyond the religious imaginary of conversion as only an answer to a divine call on the other hand. La misionología, tomada aquí como el estudio teológico y, por lo tanto, crítico de la misión cristiana, ha puesto siempre una mirada perspicaz sobre la conversión como un concepto que abarca múltiples experiencias de cambio en la fe religiosa, en el comportamiento y en la fidelidad. Sin embargo, la perspectiva secular moderna no ha sido capaz de proveer una buena explicación y comprensión misionológicas sobre conversiones que se producen de manera continua. Se evaluará el trabajo de Marion Grau y Bryan Stone, dos misiólogos muy francos de nuestros días, para saber si esta perspectiva pos-secular puede aportar algo nuevo sobre la conversión. Por un lado, la pos-secularidad puede ayudar a que los misiólogos vayan más allá del imaginario social sobre la conversión como un fenómeno socio-económico; y por el otro, ir más allá del imaginario religioso de la conversión como sólo una respuesta al llamado divino. Abstract In order to better understand the role of gene conversion in the evolution of the class I gene family of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), we have used a computer algorithm to detect clustered sequence similarities among 24 class I DNA sequences from the H-2, Qa, and Tla regions of the murine MHC. Thirty-four statistically significant clusters were detected; individual analysis of the clusters suggested at least 25 past gene conversion or recombination events. These clusters are comparable in size to the conversions observed in the spontaneously occurring H-2Kbm and H-2Kkm2 mutations, and are distributed throughout all exons of the class I gene. Thus, gene conversion does not appear to be restricted to the regions of the class I gene encoding their antigen-presentation function. Moreover, both the highly polymorphic H-2 loci and the relatively monomorphic Qa and Tla loci appear to have participated as donors and recipients in conversion events. If gene conversion is not limited to the highly polymorphic loci of the MHC, then another factor, presumably natural selection, must be responsible for maintaining the observed differences in level of variation.

Forest swamps are widely distributed in cold temperate regions, with important landscape and ecological functions. They are prone to conversion caused by complex factors. Forest swamp conversions involve forest swamping, meadow swamping, water body swamping, and conversion to farmland. An understanding of the landscape characteristics and primary environmental factors driving forest swamp conversions is imperative for exploring the mechanism of forest swamp conversions. We investigated the landscape characteristics of forest swamp conversions and quantified the relative importance of environmental factors driving these conversions for the period from 1990 to 2015 in the Great Xing’an Mountains of China. We found that forest swamping displayed high patch numbers (34,916) and density (8.51/100 ha), commonly occurring at the edge of large areas of forests. Meadow swamping was localized with low patch numbers (3613) and density (0.88/100 ha) due to lack of water recharge from ground water. Water body swamping had complex shapes (perimeter area ratio mean = 348.32) because of water table fluctuations and helophyte growth during this conversion process. Conversions to farmland presented fairly regular (perimeter area ratio mean = 289.91) and aggregated (aggregation index = 67.82) characteristics affected by agricultural irrigation and management. We found that climatic and geomorphic factors were relatively important compared to topographic factors for forest swamp conversions. Negative geomorphic conditions provided the waterlogging environment as a precondition of swamp formation. Sufficient precipitation was an important source of water recharge due to the existence of permafrost regions and long-term low temperature reduced the evaporation of swamps water and the decomposition rate of organisms. These wet and cold climatic conditions promoted forest swamp development in cold temperate regions. Humans exerted a relatively important role in forest swamping and conversions to farmland. Fire disturbance and logging accelerated the conversion from forest to swamp. This study provides scientific information necessary for the management and conservation of forest swamp resources in cold temperate regions.

This paper revisits the problem of tidal conversion at a ridge in a uniformly stratified fluid of limited depth using measurements of complex-valued added mass. When the height of a sub-marine ridge is non-negligible with respect to the depth of the water, the tidal conversion can be enhanced in the supercritical regime or reduced in the subcritical regime with respect to the large depth situation. Tidal conversion can even be null for some specific cases. Here, we study experimentally the influence of finite depth on the added mass coefficients for three different ridge shapes. We first show that, at low forcing frequency, the tidal conversion is weakly enhanced by shallow depth for a semi-circular ridge. In addition, added mass coefficients measured for a vertical ridge show strong similarities with the ones obtained for the semi-circular ridge. Nevertheless, the enhancement of the tidal conversion at low forcing frequency for the vertical ridge has not been observed, in contrast with its supercritical shape. Finally, we provide the experimental evidence of a lack of tidal conversion due to the specific shape of a ridge for certain depth and frequency tuning.

The complex cepstrum vocoder is used to modify the speaker specific characteristics of the source speaker speech to that of the target speaker speech. The low time and high time liftering are used to split the calculated cepstrum into the vocal tract and the source excitation parameters. The obtained mixed phase vocal tract and source excitation parameters with finite impulse response preserve the phase properties of the resynthesized speech frame. The radial basis function is explored to capture the nonlinear mapping function for modifying the complex cepstrum based real and imaginary components of the vocal tract and source excitation of the speech signal. The state-of-the-art Mel cepstrum envelope and the fundamental frequency (F0) are considered to represent the vocal tract and the source excitation of the speech frame, respectively. Radial basis function is used to capture and formulate the nonlinear relations between the Mel cepstrum envelope of the source and target speakers. Mean and standard deviation approach is employed to modify the fundamental frequency (F0). The Mel log spectral approximation filter is used to reconstruct the speech signal from the modified Mel cepstrum envelope and fundamental frequency. A comparison of the proposed complex cepstrum based model has been made with the state-of-the-art Mel Cepstrum Envelope based voice conversion model with objective and subjective evaluations. The evaluation measures reveal that the proposed complex cepstrum based voice conversion system approximate the converted speech signal with better accuracy than the model based on the Mel cepstrum envelope based voice conversion.

An intelligent monitoring allows to analyze data both of projects and elements of IB and AS. Complex monitoring allows to synthesize the data used in elements of IB and AS. It is possible to create CAD system and monitoring system for IB and AS conversion using principles described in this article. Vendors of elements for intelligent buildings, vendors of software used in controllers, adapter, etc., can find opportunity to found open community and establish rules for “internet specification” for intelligent elements for AS. Modern state of technology in intelligent search encourages me to say about full-automatic search, assembling and installing of software updates for AS elements of IB. I see that we can use industrial MDM and hypersearch software widely used in big internet vitrines.

The reliability of depth conversion in complex land areas is particularly challenging. Accuracy and precision are usually difficult to achieve simultaneously because of the limited amount and quality of seismic data and sparse control from well data. Ideally, depth-migration methods would be the right tools to produce such data for interpreters. However, despite recent significant breakthroughs in seismic imaging, the ability to provide precise depths is not always achievable with depth-imaging techniques. Therefore, depth conversion remains a crucial tool for converting a seismic image and its interpretation to geologic depth. We have developed an overview of the techniques used for depth conversion through a carefully selected set of geologically diverse field examples. We determine the challenges faced while applying each methodology and, more importantly, share our own experiences and pitfalls. We also evaluate the steps taken to overcome these limitations. All these studies highlight the pragmatic application of techniques and their common pitfalls to improve the workflows that can be implemented to solve other depth-conversion problems. Depth-conversion techniques can be classified depending on the approach used for velocity model building (VMB) (i.e., time-depth and instantaneous velocity functions, layer-cake models, or geostatistical velocity interpolations) and also depending on the ray-tracing procedure (i.e., vertical stretching or image ray). To verify the reliability of the VMB, we establish the following criteria for an acceptable velocity model: (1) honors hard data, (2) integrates all the available sources of velocity information, and (3) makes geologic sense. We reinforce the latter in complex areas where geologic control drives the chosen approach. For instance, in cases with strong velocity gradients (e.g., basement-involved structures), vertical depth conversion may not be able to solve all possible scenarios, resulting in an incomplete assessment of the structural uncertainty. To model such situations, we use a time-to-depth conversion based on the image-ray concept.

AbstractAmong the many elements in the thought of Bernard Lonergan, a twentieth-century Canadian Jesuit philosopher and theologian, one of the most important is his theory of authentic conversion. Lonergan himself subdivided this topic into intellectual, moral, and religious conversion, but his writings on the arts may also justify a further category, aesthetic conversion. The present essay demonstrates that all four elements of Lonerganian conversion, in diverse ways and in varying degrees, can be explored through the study of two classic works of literature: Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and Dante's Purgatorio. Not only do the major characters in these texts undergo transformations, or conversions, that can be illuminated through Lonergan's concepts but, moreover, both texts as a whole use complex aesthetic methods to attempt a similar transformation in their readers. As such, from a Lonerganian standpoint, these works of literature both illuminate the meaning of authentic conversion and seek to enact its effects.

Frontal polymerization is a process in which a spatially localized reaction zone propagates into a monomer, converting it into a polymer. In the simplest case of free-radical polymerization, a mixture of monomer and initiator is placed in a test tube. A reaction is then initiated at one end of the tube. Over time, a self-sustained thermal wave, in which chemical conversion occurs, is produced. This phenomenon is possible because of the highly exothermic nature of the polymerization reactions.Though there are certain advantages to this polymerization process over the more traditional methods, one of the drawbacks is that conversion tends to be incomplete. One way to increase conversion is by using greater amounts of initiator. The disadvantage to using this method is that more initiator results in the production of more free radicals, leading to large numbers of undesirably short polymer chains. A second method is to use a mixture of unstable and stable initiators. In this paper we develop and study a mathematical model of the propagation of free-radical polymerization fronts using such a complex initiation. We compare the propagation velocity, maximum temperature and degree of conversion of fronts with a stable initiator, an unstable initiator and a mixture of the two. In addition, we examine how altering the stability of the stable initiator affects these quantities. We show that it is indeed the case that a mixture of unstable and stable initiators does have many advantages over using either type of initiator individually, in agreement with the existing experimental data.

The molecular genetic mechanism of gene conversion in higher eukaryotes remains unknown. We find it of considerable interest to determine when during spermatogenesis gene conversion occurs. We have therefore purified pachytene spermatocytes and haploid spermatocytes from adult mice and analyzed these fractions for the presence of gene conversion products resulting from the transfer between the major histocompatibility complex class II genes Ebd and Abk in a polymerase chain reaction assay. We have further isolated spermatogenic cells from prepubescent mice and analyzed them for the presence of the same gene conversion products. We can detect gene conversion products in testis cells as early as in 8-d-old mice where the only existing spermatogenic cells are spermatogonia. The frequency of gene conversion products remains the same as the cells reach meiosis in 18-d-old mice, and is unchanged after meiosis is completed in haploid spermatocytes. Gene conversion of this specific fragment therefore appears to be a premeiotic event and, consequently, relies on genetic mechanisms other than normal meiotic recombination.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of feed composition, space velocity, and reaction temperature on methane/carbon dioxide conversion and H2/CO ratio. Independent variables were feed ratio, flow rate, and reaction temperature while CH4 conversion, CO2 conversion, and H2/CO ratio were set as dependent variables in the complex reaction of methane. As a result of mixed reforming reaction of methane through RSM modeling method, the reaction temperature was found to have the greatest influence. This is because the reaction temperature has the greatest influence on the reaction rate and equilibrium state as a factor directly affecting the thermodynamic value of the catalyst.

This paper discusses issues concerning the creation of conversion tables for East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and European calendars and describes the development of an open source calendar database as part of the history of converting East Asian calendars. East Asian calendars encode both astronomical and political cycles. As a result, date conversion must in practice rely on complex look-up tables and cannot be done merely algorithmically. We provide a detailed overview of the history of such conversion tables and find that the modelling of these tables into the digital follows a trend of increasingly detailed computation of chronological time. The Buddhist Studies Time Authority Database was designed to allow computational conversion of the Chinese, the Japanese and the Korean Calendar, between each other, as well as with the Gregorian, proleptic Gregorian and Julian calendar. It relies on the Julian Day Number (JDN) as common referent for all conversions.
