Multi-platform ecosystems (MPEs) are comprised of multiple platforms integrated to create and capture value together. The collective value creation and capture within MPEs gives rise to coopetion, which impacts the business model configurations for both incumbents and entrants that provide complementary offerings. Previous platform research has predominantly focused on incumbent platforms. This research focuses on the question of how entrant platforms configure their business models to endorse coopetition with incumbents in the MPEs within the healthcare sector. Our findings indicate that entrant platforms configure their business models to integrate into MPEs and need to flexibly align with the complementarity requirements set by the incumbents, combine inter- and intra-platform collaborative dynamics in their business models, and build on coopetition with incumbents.

Digital platform business model innovation is a rapidly evolving field, yet the literature on resource, complementary, and ecological boundaries remains limited, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of the factors that shape the success of these platforms. This paper explores the mechanisms by which digital platforms enable business model innovation, a topic of significant theoretical and practical importance that has yet to be fully examined. Through a review of the existing literature and an examination of the connotations of digital platforms, the design of platform boundaries, and the deployment of boundary resources, the study finds that (1) the uncertainty of complementors and complementary products drives business model innovation in digital platforms; (2) the design of resource, complementary, and ecological system boundaries is crucial to digital platform business models and manages complementor and complementary product uncertainty while promoting value co-creation; and (3) boundary resources establish, manage, and sustain cross-border relationships that impact value creation and capture. Based on these findings, four research propositions are proposed to guide future research on digital platform business model innovation and provide insights for effectively innovating business models and influencing value creation and capture.

Abstract This paper studies the bundling strategies of two firms that each sell a horizontally differentiated platform and a complementary good. When the complementary goods are vertically differentiated, the firm that sells the superior one can commit to a more aggressive pricing strategy through bundling. In the presence of asymmetry in externalities between the two sides in the platform market, bundling may be profitable without foreclosing the rival when platforms implement cross subsidies from the high-externality side (developers) to the low-externality side (consumers). Bundling has a positive effect on welfare because it allows for better internalization of the indirect network effects and reduces the developer cost of multi-homing, but it also has a negative effect because some consumers consume less-preferred components. Consequently, bundling is socially desirable when platforms are not too differentiated and the vertical differentiation between the complementary goods is high.

Based on previous research on open innovation and appropriability strategies, using knowledge production functions and evolutionary game methods, this paper describes the process of dynamic cooperation between open innovation platforms and their participants. This paper specifically analyzes the influence of open innovation platform’s knowledge appropriability/knowledge sharing strategies, as well as participants’ exit/nonexit strategy, on the cooperative relationship. Through simulation analysis, this paper draws the following conclusions: first, the knowledge appropriability strategy of the open innovation platform and the participant’s nonexit strategy is an important strategic point of the cooperation between open innovation platforms and participants; second, the amount of knowledge production affects the strategic choices of open innovation platforms, while the knowledge increment affects the strategic choices of participants; third, the appreciation coefficient of complementary assets determines the direction of evolution of the cooperation process.

Digital technologies are radically transforming our work environments and demand for skills, with certain jobs being automated away and others demanding mastery of new digital techniques. This global challenge of rapidly changing skill requirements due to task automation overwhelms workers. The digital skill gap widens further as technological and social transformation outpaces national education systems and precise skill requirements for mastering emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, remain opaque. Online labour platforms could help us to understand this grand challenge of reskilling en masse. Online labour platforms build a globally integrated market that mediates between millions of buyers and sellers of remotely deliverable cognitive work. This commentary argues that, over the last decade, online labour platforms have become the ‘laboratories’ of skill rebundling; the combination of skills from different occupational domains. Online labour platform data allows us to establish a new taxonomy on the individual complementarity of skills. For policy makers, education providers and recruiters, a continuous analysis of complementary reskilling trajectories enables automated, individual and far-sighted suggestions on the value of learning a new skill in a future of technological disruption.

This study takes a review and theory development (RTD) approach to synthesizing the software platform literature, offering theoretical perspective and research guidance. In doing so, we conceptualize platform and complementary capabilities for software platform owners and complementors. The review indicates that three dimensions reflect platform capabilities: intermediarity, generativity, and ambidexterity, while complementary capabilities include creativity, interconnectivity, and appropriability dimensions. We derive an integrative framework of software platforms, which explains (1) how software platform owners and complementors improve performance by enhancing their capabilities, and (2) how software platform owners, complementors, and the ecosystem environment coevolve. We then discuss how future research can build on and enrich the research framework

Currently, all major IT and telecom firms are busy trying to stimulate non-contractual complementary developments around their own core competences and offerings. But little has been done to explain the logic, strengths, and weaknesses of non-contractual innovation. The literature on open-platform leadership recognises the importance of non-contractual innovation, but only within the limited confines of a normative approach based on two implicit assumptions: that a platform's core and periphery are sharply and easily differentiated and that platforms are always grown and orchestrated from a monolithic core. Through analysis of two cases of decentralised open innovation: the emergence of video rental stores and the emergence of desktop-publishing systems. I argue that these assumptions do not apply to all open platforms. I conclude that by forcing a hierarchical framework onto the analysis, the normative approach underplays the role of non-contractual innovation and turns a blind eye to the radically self-organised and unforeseeable nature of some platforms' success.

Large-scale online platforms powered by user-generated content are extensively researched as venues of learning and knowledge production. In this ethnographically oriented study, we examine knowledge practices on a community question answering platform for computer programmers in relation to the platform mechanics of voting. Grounded in the practice theoretical perspective and drawing on the analysis of online discussion threads and platform-related online materials, our study unpacks the dominant practice of crowd-based curation, the complementing practice of distributed moderation, and the more marginal practice of providing feedback to content producers. The practices co-exist in tension and consonance, which are embedded in the materiality of the platform and are continuously enacted through user discursive boundary work, sustaining the mentioned practices as intelligible for other users, and outlining what counts as legitimately participation on the platform. The study contributes to existing research on the roles voting plays on online platforms, as well as offers implications for research on social and material organization of users' online practices. The study also discusses that it is the ambiguity around the mechanics of voting that allows practices to co-exist. While this ambiguity is often discussed by users as problematic, we suggest as potential implication of our study that it may be productive to design platforms for workable forms of ambiguity allowing knowledge practices to co-exist in tension and to provide space for user negotiations of these practices.

Web-based platforms play an increasingly important role in managing and sharing research data of all types and sizes. This article presents a case study of the data storage, sharing, and management platform Figshare. We argue that such platforms are displacing and reconfiguring the infrastructure of norms, technologies, and institutions that underlies traditional scholarly communication. Using a theoretical framework that combines infrastructure studies with platform studies, we show that Figshare leverages the platform logic of core and complementary components to re-integrate a presently splintered scholarly infrastructure. By means of this logic, platforms may provide the path to bring data inside a scholarly communication system still optimized mainly for text publications. Yet the platform strategy also risks turning over critical scientific functions to private firms whose longevity, openness, and corporate goals remain uncertain. It may amplify the existing trend of splintering infrastructures, with attendant effects on equity of service.

Digital manufacturing platforms use IIoT systems in combination with other added-value services to support manufacturing processes at different levels (e.g. design, engineering, operations planning, and execution). Digital manufacturing platforms form complex multi-sided ecosystems, involving different stakeholders ranging from supply chain collaborators to Information Technology (IT) providers. This research analyses prominent reference models for IIoT systems to align the definitions they contain and determine to what extent they are complementary and applicable to digital manufacturing platforms. Based on this analysis, the Industrial Internet Integrated Reference Model (I3RM) for digital manufacturing platforms is presented, together with general recommendations that can be applied to the architectural definition of any digital manufacturing platform.

Some of these platforms are complementary to each other, while others are competitive, or can provide a valid substitute for some of the services provided. Up till now, the most important communications platform in most of the developing countries has been the public switched telecommunication network (PSTN) which provides access to all households and buildings. This universality in providing access has also meant that the network has generally been designated as one for universal service.

Despite increasing awareness and research about online strategic information operations, there remain gaps in our understanding, including how information operations leverage the wider information ecosystem and take shape on and across multiple social media platforms. In this paper we use mixed methods, including digital trace ethnography, to look beyond a single social media platform to the broader information ecosystem. We aim to understand how multiple social media platforms are used, in parallel and complementary ways, to achieve the strategic goals of online information operations. We focus on a specific case study: the contested online conversation surrounding Syria Civil Defense (the White Helmets), a group of first responders that assists civilians affected by the civil war within the country. Our findings reveal a network of social media platforms from which content is produced, stored, and integrated into the Twitter conversation. We highlight specific activities that sustain the strategic narratives and attempt to influence the media agenda. And we note that underpinning these efforts is the work of resilience-building: the use of alternative (non-mainstream) platforms to counter perceived threats of 'censorship' by large, established social media platforms. We end by discussing the implications on social media platform policy.

Although suppliers can sell their goods on e-retailers’ e-platforms through either a wholesale or agency contract, suppliers that produce complementary goods and have different channel roles have been confused as to how to choose an optimal distribution contract. This paper aims to study this problem by considering the combined impacts of suppliers’ channel roles, e-retailer’s referral fees, goods’ differences in the level of complementarity and goods’ differences in potential demand. Our results show that, regardless of one supplier’s distribution contract choice, the other supplier always prefers agency contract, which is independent of two suppliers’ channel roles, the e-retailer’s referral fees, two goods’ differences in the level of complementarity and two goods’ differences in the potential demand. Moreover, when two suppliers use different distribution contracts to sell goods with different levels of complementarity on the same e-retailer’s e-platform, low-complementarity goods have a larger optimal retail price only if the two goods’ differences in the level of complementarity are sufficiently high, and the supplier can obtain more profits by producing low-complementarity goods regardless of the supplier’s distribution contract and channel role.

In this paper, we show that stable outcomes exist in matching environments with complementarities, such as social media platforms or markets for patent licenses. Our results apply to both nontransferable and transferable utility settings, and allow for multilateral agreements and those with externalities. In particular, we show that stable outcomes in these settings are characterized by the largest fixed point of a monotone operator, and so can be found using an algorithm; in the nontransferable utility case, this is a one‐sided deferred acceptance algorithm, rather than a Gale–Shapley algorithm. We also give a monotone comparative statics result as well as a comparative static on the effect of bundling contracts together. These illustrate the impact of design decisions, such as increased privacy protections on social media, or the use of antitrust law to disallow patent pools, on stable outcomes.

In the article, the authors give answers to such questions as: what is a digital ecosystem? How is a digital ecosystem different from a digital platform? Why are platforms scaling so quickly? Why are platforms beating traditional products? Why do platforms have a high market capitalization but employ a limited number of employees? What impact do ecosystems have on the multilateral market? How do digital ecosystems differ from traditional ecosystems? The signs of digital ecosystems are analyzed, as well as the network interaction of participants in the digital ecosystem. The authors analyze the degree of influence of the dominant platform of the ecosystem on the development of internal competition, it is also revealed that from the point of view of the digital economy, the competitive development of ecosystems can be facilitated by large economies of scale in product development due to the modular design of digital products and services, and the synergy of consumption that is formed due to technological connection between ecosystem products, increasing the complementarity between them. The authors present the components of the successful development of the ecosystem within the digital economy, as well as analyze the ecosystems that have gained the most popularity today. As a result of the analysis, the authors conclude that entering the ecosystem market is always associated with the risk of competition, which is due to the attraction of new consumers. If the market is dominated by one ecosystem or the number of ecosystems is small, then competition between them may be less intense than competition between specialized companies. Ecosystem companies benefit most from supply and demand synergies, which can be enhanced through complementary products and services.

One word for another? Analysis and comparison of eight automatic transcription platforms. This article compares the functionalities and results of eight automatic transcription platforms (Go Transcribe, Happy Scribe, Headliner, Sonix, Video Indexer, Vocalmatic, Vocapia and YouTube), for audio samples in French. We propose an original methodology, designed through an interdisciplinary work, to compare the transcriptions. It combines three complementary approaches: (1) a quantitative approach which compares the textual outcomes using a common metric, the Word Error Rate (WER), (2) a fine-grained approach to classify and understand the errors generated by the platforms, and finally (3) an approach estimating the amount of transcription time which can be saved for each file on each platform. We show that no platform surpassed the others for all the samples, but two nevertheless stood out: Vocapia and Sonix, each with their own areas of expertise. Regardless of the type of file or platform, listening and correcting the text remains a necessary step. However the use of such tools can save up to 75% of time compared with manual transcription. Yet, the use of these online tools can create major problems relating to data confidentiality and security. Finally, we reflect on the interdisciplinary setting that made this project possible.

AbstractSocial innovations, just as any other form of innovation, can benefit from crowd engagement. However, the enthusiasm for crowdsourcing social innovation has so far run ahead of its effects. Many platforms are stillborn and struggle with turning their promising projects into sustaining platforms. As opposed to commercial crowd innovations projects, additional obstacles need to be handled here. Social innovation tends to be more complex and typically involves an entire ecosystem with complementary partners. In addition, funding is usually more difficult as the impact of doing good on a communal level is hard to assess and therefore difficult to explain to investors or sponsors. To make social innovation successful, the innovation platform design needs to tackle these additional challenges. The governance and coordination of social innovation projects need to be designed thoughtfully. Organizations need to be prepared for several loops and some experimentation to balance value generation with the right structure and the right mix of participants, consumers and other platform partners.

Qualified telecommunication facilities and infrastructure complement the convergence of technology applications. One of the most widely used by the public is Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. However, it raises a new problem as domestic operator service providers are aggrieved by OTT platforms that are gaining more popularity despite their unclear legal standing. The Indonesian government responded by issuing a number of regulations. This study describes the regulations governing telecommunications and OTT platforms in Indonesia as well as pointing out the consequences and challenges of the issuance of these new regulations by taking into account the conditions of the national electronic system. This study applied a qualitative method with a normative juridical approach. Data was collected through an online literature review with analytical descriptive data processing. The results of this study elucidate the four latest regulations governing the telecommunications service sector and OTT platforms. These regulations are complementary, even though digital taxes are still seen as challenges in the form of whose outcomes are considered to have not touched the Indonesian people in general. In this instance, it demonstrates that regulations are complementary, as is the case with natural law theory, and that the law adapts to social life.

In this scientific context, in the current manuscript, we exploit the low-cost plasmonic calligraphy as a versatile approach to directly draw continuous plasmonic lines on Whatman paper using a regular ballpoint pen successively filled with two different anisotropic nanoparticles shapes (gold bipyramids—AuBPs and gold nanorods—AuNRs) as colloidal inks. After the efficient immobilization of the positively-charged AuBPs and AuNRs onto the paper fibres, proved by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) investigations, the specificity of our as-calligraphed-paper platform is ensured by coating the selected lines with a thin layer of anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte, creating, consequently, a well-defined plasmonic array of charge-selective regions. Finally, the functionality of the well-isolated and as-miniaturized active plasmonic array is, subsequently, tested using the anionic Rose-Bengal and cationic Rhodamine 6G target analytes and proved by complementary dual optical “ON/OFF Switch” sensing (i.e. Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering sensing/metal-enhanced fluorescence sensing) onto the same plasmonic line, developing thus a simple multiplexed plasmonic array platform, which could further facilitate the well-desired biomarker detection in complex mixtures.

The widespread dissemination of fake news on social media platforms can cause serious social impact, making the detection of fake news on social media platforms an urgent problem to be solved. Up to now, scholars have proposed various methods ranging from traditional manual feature extraction to deep learning algorithms for detecting fake news. However, these methods still have some limitations and two difficult problems: (1) How to learn informative news feature representations without losing information as much as possible? (2) How to effectively fuse multi-modal information to obtain high-order complementary information about news and enhance fake news detection? To overcome these two difficulties, this article proposes a multi-modal fusion fake news detection model. Firstly, the model uses BERT and VGG-19 to obtain the text and image feature representations of news content, respectively, and then further fuses multi-modal information through a multi-modal attention mechanism module to obtain high-order complementary information between different modalities, thereby obtaining informative news feature representations for fake news detection. Experimental results on two real-world public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model compared to mainstream detection methods.

It is well accepted that dysbiosis of microbiota is associated with disease; however, the biological mechanisms that promote susceptibility or resilience to disease remain elusive. One of the major limitations of previous microbiome studies has been the lack of complementary metatranscriptomic (functional) data to complement the interpretation of metagenomics (bacterial abundance). The purpose of this study was twofold, first to evaluate the bacterial diversity and differential gene expression of gut microbiota using complementary shotgun metagenomics (MG) and metatranscriptomics (MT) from same fecal sample. Second, to compare sequence data using different Illumina platforms and with different sequencing parameters as new sequencers are introduced, and to determine if the data are comparable on different platforms. In this study, we perform ultradeep metatranscriptomic shotgun sequencing for a sample that we previously analyzed with metagenomics shotgun sequencing. We performed sequencing analysis using different Illumina platforms, with different sequencing and analysis parameters. Our results suggest that use of different Illumina platform did not lead to detectable bias in the sequencing data. The analysis of the sample using MG and MT approach shows that some species genes are highly represented in the MT than in the MG, indicating that some species are highly metabolically active. Our analysis also shows that ~52% of the genes in the metagenome are in the metatranscriptome and therefore are robustly expressed. The functions of the low and rare abundance bacterial species remain poorly understood. Our observations indicate that among the low abundant species analyzed in this study some were found to be more metabolically active compared to others, and can contribute distinct profiles of biological functions that may modulate the host-microbiota and bacteria-bacteria interactions.

In an era where crowdfunding in Portugal is garnering increased public attention, exemplified by notable campaigns like the recent funding of the nurses’ strike, we explore its potential as an alternative financial source to traditional banking. Through a comprehensive case study, we delve into pertinent issues, encompassing European legislation, market dynamics, and a survey disseminated to representatives of the four prominent Portuguese crowdfunding platforms. Comprising forty-one questions across four categories, the survey extracts insights on platform details, company/project information, investor perspectives, and the financing process, along with an evaluation of platform advantages/disadvantages vis-à-vis traditional banking. Despite heightened visibility, crowdfunding remains relatively unfamiliar to the broader public, yet it diverges from banking not as a substitute but as a complementary financial mechanism. Emphasizing accessibility, process agility, and reduced bureaucracy, crowdfunding serves as a means of swiftly gaining recognition for a company or project while tapping into a broad audience. Rather than competition, it offers supplementary support, facilitating the identification and validation of investment opportunities and concepts. Moreover, it streamlines subsequent interactions with banks and investors, enhancing confidence in a project’s viability. In essence, crowdfunding emerges not as an alternative but a strategic complement, enriching the financial landscape with its unique attributes.

Background The Veteran Administration (VA) Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation is invested in improving veteran health through a whole-person approach while taking advantage of the electronic resources suite available through the VA. Currently, there is no standardized process to collect and integrate electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) of complementary and integrative health (CIH) into clinical care using a web-based survey platform. This quality improvement project enrolled veterans attending CIH appointments within a VA facility and used web-based technologies to collect ePROs. Objective This study aimed to (1) determine a practical process for collecting ePROs using patient email services and a web-based survey platform and (2) conduct analyses of survey data using repeated measures to estimate the effects of CIH on patient outcomes. Methods In total, 100 veterans from one VA facility, comprising 11 cohorts, agreed to participate. The VA patient email services (Secure Messaging) were used to manually send links to a 16-item web-based survey stored on a secure web-based survey storage platform (Qualtrics). Each survey included questions about patient outcomes from CIH programs. Each cohort was sent survey links via Secure Messaging (SM) at 6 time points: weeks 1 through 4, week 8, and week 12. Process evaluation interviews were conducted with five primary care providers to assess barriers and facilitators to using the patient-reported outcome survey in usual care. Results This quality improvement project demonstrated the usability of SM and Qualtrics for ePRO collection. However, SM for ePROs was labor intensive for providers. Descriptive statistics on health competence (2-item Perceived Health Competence Scale), physical and mental health (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global-10), and stress (4-item Perceived Stress Scale) indicated that scores did not significantly change over time. Survey response rates varied (18/100, 18.0%-42/100, 42.0%) across each of the 12 weekly survey periods. In total, 74 of 100 participants provided ≥1 survey, and 90% (66/74) were female. The majority, 62% (33/53) of participants, who reported the use of any CIH modality, reported the use of two or more unique modalities. Primary care providers highlighted specific challenges with SM and offered solutions regarding staff involvement in survey implementation. Conclusions This quality improvement project informs our understanding of the processes currently available for using SM and web-based data platforms to collect ePROs. The study results indicate that although it is possible to use SM and web-based survey platforms for ePROs, automating scheduled administration will be necessary to reduce provider burden. The lack of significant change in ePROs may be due to standard measures taking a biomedical approach to wellness. Future work should focus on identifying ideal ePRO processes that would include standardized, whole-person measures of wellness.

AbstractOptical metasurfaces are judicously engineered electromagnetic interfaces that can control and manipulate many of light’s quintessential properties, such as amplitude, phase, and polarization. These artificial surfaces are composed of subwavelength arrays of optical antennas that experience resonant light-matter interaction with incoming electromagnetic radiation. Their ability to arbitrarily engineer optical interactions has generated considerable excitement and interest in recent years and is a promising methodology for miniaturizing optical components for applications in optical communication systems, imaging, sensing, and optical manipulation. However, development of optical metasurfaces requires progress and solutions to inherent challenges, namely large losses often associated with the resonant structures; large-scale, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible nanofabrication techniques; and incorporation of active control elements. Furthermore, practical metasurface devices require robust operation in high-temperature environments, caustic chemicals, and intense electromagnetic fields. Although these challenges are substantial, optical metasurfaces remain in their infancy, and novel material platforms that offer resilient, low-loss, and tunable metasurface designs are driving new and promising routes for overcoming these hurdles. In this review, we discuss the different material platforms in the literature for various applications of metasurfaces, including refractory plasmonic materials, epitaxial noble metal, silicon, graphene, phase change materials, and metal oxides. We identify the key advantages of each material platform and review the breakthrough devices that were made possible with each material. Finally, we provide an outlook for emerging metasurface devices and the new material platforms that are enabling such devices.

Metabolomics methods often encounter trade-offs between quantification accuracy and coverage, with truly comprehensive coverage only attainable through a multitude of complementary assays. Due to the lack of standardization and the variety of metabolomics assays, it is difficult to integrate datasets across studies or assays. To inform metabolomics platform selection, with a focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we review platform use and sample sizes in psychiatric metabolomics studies and then evaluate five prominent metabolomics platforms for coverage and performance, including intra-/inter-assay precision, accuracy, and linearity. We found performance was variable between metabolite classes, but comparable across targeted and untargeted approaches. Within all platforms, precision and accuracy were highly variable across classes, ranging from 0.9–63.2% (coefficient of variation) and 0.6–99.1% for accuracy to reference plasma. Several classes had high inter-assay variance, potentially impeding dissociation of a biological signal, including glycerophospholipids, organooxygen compounds, and fatty acids. Coverage was platform-specific and ranged from 16–70% of PTSD-associated metabolites. Non-overlapping coverage is challenging; however, benefits of applying multiple metabolomics technologies must be weighed against cost, biospecimen availability, platform-specific normative levels, and challenges in merging datasets. Our findings and open-access cross-platform dataset can inform platform selection and dataset integration based on platform-specific coverage breadth/overlap and metabolite-specific performance.

Abstract Context Although the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has accelerated the use of telemedicine platforms across the country, medical students may lack confidence in their ability to conduct satisfactory patient encounters and practice clinical medicine through telemedicine. Objectives To evaluate the role of a standardized patient encounter on first year medical student confidence and satisfaction in using telemedicine. Methods One hundred and sixty two first year medical students recruited from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Carolinas campus were surveyed on their confidence and satisfaction with using telemedicine platforms before and after conducting a patient encounter. Participant confidence and satisfaction were assessed with a five point Likert scale: “not confident,” “a little confident,” “somewhat confident,” “confident,” and “extremely confident.” Results Of 162 students, 103 (63.6%) completed the preencounter survey and 74 (45.7%) completed the postencounter survey. Before the standardized patient encounter, 37 participants (35.9%) reported that they were “a little confident” and 20 participants (19.4%) reported that they were “not confident” in their ability to conduct a patient interview using a telemedicine platform. Following the encounter, 24 students (32.4%) reported feeling “somewhat confident”, and 32 (43.2%) reported feeling “confident” in their ability. Conclusions Medical students’ confidence and satisfaction with telemedicine improved after a standardized patient telemedicine experience in this study. This experience allowed students to practice the unique skills required for telemedicine. Medical schools might consider adding a telemedicine curriculum and standardized patient experiences in the undergraduate medical setting.

Prothrombin-related thrombophilia is a genetic disorder produced by a substitution of a single DNA base pair, replacing guanine with adenine, and is detected mainly by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A suitable alternative that could detect the single point mutation without requiring sample amplification is the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. SPR biosensors are of great interest: they offer a platform to monitor biomolecular interactions, are highly selective, and enable rapid analysis in real time. Oligonucleotide-based SPR biosensors can be used to differentiate complementary sequences from partially complementary or noncomplementary strands. In this work, a glass chip covered with an ultrathin (50 nm) gold film was modified with oligonucleotide strands complementary to the mutated or normal (nonmutated) DNA responsible for prothrombin-related thrombophilia, forming two detection platforms called mutated thrombophilia (MT) biosensor and normal thrombophilia (NT) biosensor. The results show that the hybridization response is obtained in 30 min, label free and with high reproducibility. The sensitivity obtained in both systems was approximately 4 ΔμRIU/nM. The dissociation constant and limits of detection calculated were 12.2 nM and 20 pM (3 fmol), respectively, for the MT biosensor, and 8.5 nM and 30 pM (4.5 fmol) for the NT biosensor. The two biosensors selectively recognize their complementary strand (mutated or normal) in buffer solution. In addition, each platform can be reused up to 24 times when the surface is regenerated with HCl. This work contributes to the design of the first SPR biosensor for the detection of prothrombin-related thrombophilia based on oligonucleotides with single point mutations, label-free and without the need to apply an amplification method.

Purpose – Platforms have been enhancing delivery networks for faster and cheaper delivery, resulting in nationwide coverage. It has been observed recently that platforms raise buyer fees and the share of delivery cost, seemingly damaging the buyer group. This paper aims to analyze economic relationships between homing structure , pricing schedule, and delivery cost to understand unfavorable actions toward buyers. Design/Methodology/Approach – We set up a platform competition model based on the Hotelling location model, and characterize a symmetric Nash equilibrium. Two platforms intermediate two groups and charge fees, single-homing a buyer group and a multi-homing seller group in a one-unit-long city. Findings – A drop in delivery cost increases both the seller and buyer surpluses. Platforms with first degree price discriminatory fees can absorb the entire surplus from a multi-homing seller. By contrast, platforms need to lower the uniform fee on single-homing buyers in order to poach. A greater share of delivery cost on the buyer side increases both the seller and buyer fees, and thus increase the platform’s profit. Research Implications – A greater share of delivery cost on buyer's side yields two positive effects for platforms. Sellers with lower delivery cost burdens enjoy a greater surplus, but eventually see a higher fee by platforms. Buyers facing greater delivery costs realize platforms are more differentiated horizontally, which shows inelastic demand for the fee, which brings less competition between platforms.

Introduction: Health care data is increasing. The correct analysis of such data will improve the quality of care and reduce costs. This kind of data has certain features such as high volume, variety, high-speed production, etc. It makes it impossible to analyze with ordinary hardware and software platforms. Choosing the right platform for managing this kind of data is very important. The purpose of this study is to introduce and compare the most popular and most widely used platform for processing big data, Apache Hadoop MapReduce, and the two Apache Spark and Apache Flink platforms, which have recently been featured with great prominence.Material and Methods: This study is a survey whose content is based on the subject matter search of the Proquest, PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, IranMedex, Irandoc, Magiran, ParsMedline and Scientific Information Database (SID) databases, as well as Web reviews, specialized books with related keywords and standard. Finally, 80 articles related to the subject of the study were reviewed. Results: The findings showed that each of the studied platforms has features, such as data processing, support for different languages, processing speed, computational model, memory management, optimization, delay, error tolerance, scalability, performance, compatibility, Security and so on. Overall, the findings showed that the Apache Hadoop environment has simplicity, error detection, and scalability management based on clusters, but because its processing is based on batch processing, it works for slow complex analyzes and does not support flow processing, Apache Spark is also distributed as a computational platform that can process a big data set in memory with a very fast response time, the Apache Flink allows users to store data in memory and load them multiple times and provide a complex Fault Tolerance mechanism Continuously retrieves data flow status. Conclusion: The application of big data analysis and processing platforms varies according to the needs. In other words, it can be said that each technology is complementary, each of which is applicable in a particular field and cannot be separated from one another and depending on the purpose and the expected expectation, and the platform must be selected for analysis or whether custom tools are designed on these platforms.

Next-generation technology provides users with new, advanced functionality that often renders the past technology obsolete, opening a window of opportunity for challengers. Major benefits can accrue to technology leaders, but for platform technologies that require complementary innovation from external complementors to create value for users, those benefits are limited by the difficulty of securing complements. The focus of this article is on the value users derive from the variety and quality of platform complements and its impact on leaders’ performance over time relative to followers. The article shows that next-generation platform leaders that build in-house complements and encourage broader participation by external complementors can enhance platform value to users at early market stages. Yet, later on, when the market has taken off, continuing to leverage these strategies will negatively affect the variety and quality of their complements, constraining their growth capacity and performance relative to followers. Leaders may thus lock themselves into suboptimal performance patterns and eventually fall behind their followers. The analysis provided herein offers new insights about what drives platform competition by highlighting the challenges platform leaders face, particularly in the growth stage of a platform’s market evolution, and the critical role played by complement quality in shaping platform competition over time.

The study is a longitudinal, deep, explorative study aimed at identifying managerial challenges to inter-firm platform development and how they can be dealt with. Analysis shows that the factory sequence is a critical factor when developing inter-firm platform architecture. Also, making architectural concessions without jeopardising brand uniqueness places new demands on managers involved in the development processes. Further, we found a reciprocal interdependence between technological and managerial factors that created a need for innovative organisational and managerial solutions. Biosensor platforms consisting of layer by layer films combining materials with different functionalities have been developed and used to obtain improved catechol biosensors. Tyrosinase (Tyr) or laccase (Lac) were deposited onto LbL films formed by layers of a cationic linker (chitosan, CHI) alternating with layers of anionic electrocatalytic materials (sulfonated copper phthalocyanine, CuPcS or gold nanoparticles, AuNP). Films with different layer structures were successfully formed. Characterization of surface roughness and porosity was carried out using AFM. Electrochemical responses towards catechol showed that the LbL composites efficiently improved the electron transfer path between Tyr or Lac and the electrode surface, producing an increase in the intensity over the response in the absence of the LbL platform. LbL structures with higher roughness and pore size facilitated the diffusion of catechol, resulting in lower LODs. The [(CHI)-(AuNP)-(CHI)-(CuPcS)]2-Tyr showed an LOD of 8.55∙10−4 μM, which was one order of magnitude lower than the 9.55·10−3 µM obtained with [(CHI)-(CuPcS)-(CHI)-(AuNP)]2-Tyr, and two orders of magnitude lower than the obtained with other nanostructured platforms. It can be concluded that the combination of adequate materials with complementary activity and the control of the structure of the platform is an excellent strategy to obtain biosensors with improved performances.

The active introduction of information and communication technologies has significantly accelerated the transformation of institutional forms, and methods and mechanisms of competition. Network structures of information platforms (IP) have replaced the value chains. In these conditions, the study of development patterns of the institutional principles of successful competition becomes especially relevant. The methodological basis of the study is based on the use of tools of dialectical, historical-genetic, structural, and complementary qualitative analysis. The evolution of key institutional forms of competition in the process of transition from the First to the Fourth Industrial Revolutions is studied. The peculiarities of the role and place of IP as a universal institution and business model that receives competitive advantages in the conditions of active dissemination of digital technologies are revealed. The structure, the main sections of classification and directions of IP activities are presented. The author reveals the connection of the mechanisms for ensuring the IP competitiveness with their complementarity to the conditions of digitalization. The complementary place in the environment of the competitive interaction of IP as a network institutional form of the epoch of informatization is substantiated. It displaces in competitive markets hierarchical structures that were complementary to the needs of the industrial economy era. It is shown that the introduction of IP as the leading institutional structure of the information economy causes radical changes in the directions, the mechanism of competition and the competition policy of the state.

Time–frequency extraction is a key issue to understand structural symmetry of dynamic responses of offshore oil platforms for early warning during drilling operations. Current popular methods for signal characteristics extraction can only obtain the attributes with a single dimension or poor precision. To solve this, a combined Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) and variational mode decomposition (VMD) method is proposed to extract multidimensional dynamic response characteristics of time, frequency, and energy of offshore oil platforms. Based on the extracted time–frequency–energy information, the frequency-domain integration approach (FDIA) can be applied to calculate the displacement using accelerometer in the micro inertial measurement unit (MIMU). A complementary filtering algorithm was designed to measure the torsion angle of platforms using six degrees of freedom data from the MIMU to obtain the torsion angle information. The performance of the proposed method was validated using a series of simulation shaking-table tests and a field test conducted on an offshore oil platform at Dongying City, Shandong Province, China. During the field test, seven out of eight collisions were detected in the frequency range 5 Hz to 12 Hz. The intensity of the fifth collision was the highest, and the maximum displacement obtained by the accelerometer was 6 mm. In addition, the results show a correlation between the axes of the accelerometer and gyroscope, and their combination can measure a torsion angle up to 1.1°.

Purpose: This study aims to determine the current state of research on partner management in the context of IIoT platforms that rely on partnerships to act as innovation engines. Design/Method/Approach (only for empirical papers): The applied research method is a systematic literature analysis supported by a concept-centric synthesis. The sample of relevant literature comprises thirty papers. Findings: The results indicate that only a few frameworks exist to improve and professionalize partner management in the practice and only a few papers focus on IIoT platform ecosystems. In contrast, there are some articles that empirically examine individual determinants of partner management in detail. Based on these results, a conceptual framework is derived to organize and distinguish the determinants of partner management from the determinants of partner programs necessary to realize partner management. Theoretical Implications: The study contributes to the research stream on partner management in IIoT platform ecosystems and enterprise software ecosystems, synthesizing the existing research and highlighting the importance of curated support of partners as a competitive lever between platform ecosystems competing in the same domain. Practical Implications: Practitioners can use the derived framework to structure partner management activities and make more informed decisions based on the structured view of decisions summarized in the conceptual framework. Originality/Value: Due to the critical role of complementary partners in innovating upon IIoT platforms the framework is an important foundation for further research on the individual determinants of partner management in the context of digital platforms. Research Limitations/Future Research: The derived conceptual framework was not empirically validated. Empirical follow-up research could refine the framework and develop it into a taxonomy using systematic procedures. Paper Type: Conceptual JEL Сlassіfіcatіon: M15
