There is a growing debate on the theoretical basis, how it could be conceptualised, as well as the utility and meaning of regional competitiveness. This is associated with various attempts to measure regional competitiveness with the help of composite indices for coming-up with league tables. However the measurement of regional performance has run ahead of the academic debate, such indices receive a lot of media attention, and in some cases are even used by policy-makers to support their arguments. It is therefore instructive to look at such indices in more detail to evaluate their utility from a practical standpoint. This is done by working out the theoretical framework for six indices, deconstructing these and analysing the single indicators. Methodologically, issues such as normalization, standardization and the aggregation into a single number are also included. In addition to this, since many authors claim that their indices can function as a proxy for future growth, a statistical analysis of the predictive quality with respect to economic performance has also been carried out. This thesis, therefore, for the first time, sheds light on the utility of regional competitiveness indices and contributes to the discussion of the meaning of benchmarking regional performance based on the regional competitiveness hegemony that can be observed. The findings suggest that indices of regional competitiveness can be of only limited help for policy-decisions besides although they are a source for a wealth of information on certain regional indicators. This is primarily because of the lack of a theoretical basis for measuring regional competitiveness, and secondly because of the poor performance in functioning as a proxy for future economic performance.

As competition becomes intense, firms seek strategies to keep afloat. Among others, they carefully choose their activity location, recruit a talented workforce, and engage in innovation. In this thesis, we shed light on these three features empirically, mainly using econometric techniques. Our contribution is in the literature of firms’ competitiveness, industrial organization and economic geography. At first, we study regional productivity disparities and their interplay with local agglomeration advantages. To do so, we apply a density-based machine learning clustering algorithm to identify firms’ clusters at a fine-grained geographic scale on a sample of Italian firms. Then, we observe simultaneously the extent to which clusters explain agglomeration economies and firm selection effects. Our findings suggest that dense clusters generate agglomeration externalities that are heterogeneous across regions. In the second part of the thesis, we
investigate the impact of foreign managers on firms’ competitiveness on a sample of firms operating in the United Kingdom. We show that domestic firms become more efficient
after recruiting foreigners to their management team due to
previous industry-specific experience. In the last part, we assess the impact of patents on market share and labour productivity in the global Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector. Using a recent difference-in-difference approach, we find that patenting increase market share without significantly affecting labour productivity. Our evidence indicates some concerns regarding the implications of property rights from innovation on market competition.

National economic competitiveness is a major concern to governments, firms, and individuals in an increasingly globalised world. Culture is known affect economic competitiveness, but there is little existing research that links Hofstede’s cultural dimensions with the Human Capital Indicators in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index. U-blox is an international firm with offices around the world. The firm has grown through acquisitions and has become a key player in the wireless communication and positioning semiconductors business. The chosen topic will study the cultural aspects of a selected group of u-blox subsidiaries. The values in a workplace are in fact influenced by culture and by their human capital. Using Hofstede’s dimensions to analyse the cultural factors, it is possible to study the international context of the human capital in each subsidiary by using reliable international indicators provided in the Global Competitiveness Index.

This thesis explores the changing nature of accountancy in Birmingham and the increasing price-sensitivity of the industry, which is producing interesting tensions inside firms and between the workplace and home lives. This is part of ongoing commoditization, which has been frequently cited in the literature, but overlooked empirically. This research presents an integrated analysis of commoditization based upon 60 semi-structured interviews, investigating its drivers as well as the responses to the phenomenon. A conceptualisation of the current phase of commoditization is presented and the adaptations in firm level routines are explored. It then analyses the impacts of commoditization and changing firm practices on the lives of individuals at work, and the resultant effect on home lives. This thesis uncovers an increasing hybridisation of the worlds of work and home and highlights the contested nature of the boundary between the two spaces, which is placing constraints on career lifestyles. This work contributes a holistic and empirical understanding of commoditization to the literature, changing the way that knowledge services are conceptualised. It also uncovers new dimensions of organisational routines; hidden and visible routines, and identifies the individual as a powerful actor in the performance of firm routines, contributing to the literature on evolutionary theory.

Conseqüentemente, os países precisam cada vez mais permanecer competitivos em termos de impostos. Este último levanta a questão de saber se isso tem uma influência positiva no desempenho econômico de um país.
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo sinalizar o impacto do sistema de tributação das empresas holandês em seu desempenho econômico durante o período de 1995 a 2018. Uma regressão OLS foi realizada para responder à principal questão de pesquisa; "Os impostos corporativos holandeses afetam o desempenho econômico da Holanda?" Foi examinado o efeito de varias variáveis explicativas, como as taxas de imposto sobre as sociedades estatutárias, efetivas e implícitas, nas variáveis dependentes crescimento do PIB, IED líquido e GCF.
Os resultados empíricos do estudo apresentam a relação negativa e significativa entre as taxas de imposto sobre as sociedades efetivas e o crescimento do PIB, bem como a relação positiva e significativa entre as receitas fiscais das sociedades e o crescimento do PIB. Além disso, as taxas legais de imposto sobre as sociedades demonstram um impacto negativo e significativo no IDE líquido. A reforma tributária de 2007, usada como variável de controle, tem um impacto positivo e significativo sobre o IED líquido. A variável dependente GCF não revela significância relevante com as variáveis explicativas. Para examinar os resultados, pode-se concluir que, em certo grau, os impostos corporativos holandeses influenciam o desempenho econômico da Holanda.<br>Tax competitiveness is proven to be of growing importance due to the globalization and digitalization era, which increases the capital mobility of businesses. Hence, countries increasingly need to remain tax competitive. The latter raises the question whether this has a positive influence on the economic performance of a country.
This dissertation aims to shed light on the impact of the Dutch corporate taxation system on its economic performance over the period 1995 until 2018. An OLS regression was performed to answer the main research question; "Do Dutch corporate taxes impact the economic performance of the Netherlands?" The effect of various explanatory variables such as statutory, effective, and implicit corporate tax rates, onthe dependent variables GDP growth, net FDI, and GCF were examined.
The empirical results of the study present the negative and significant relationship between effective corporate tax rates and GDP growth as well as the positive and significant relationship between corporate tax revenues and GDP growth. Moreover, statutory corporate tax rates demonstrate a negative and significant impact on net FDI. The 2007 tax reform, used as a control variable, has a positive and significant impact on net FDI. The dependent variable GCF does not disclose any relevant significance with the explanatory variables. To scrutinize the results, it can be concluded that to a certain degree Dutch corporate taxes do influence the economic performance of the Netherlands.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The economic research on competitiveness has become popular in recent years. Free-trade agreements and open-market policies provide new challenges for food processors competing in domestic and international markets. The Canadian poultry processing industry is one sector in which the competitive status needs to be investigated. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the poultry processing sectors of Canada and the United States. The study measures the competitiveness, both at the industrial level and at a firm’s level, and identifies the internal and external drivers of competitiveness. Comparisons were conducted in terms of price, value added ratios, and productivity growth. Results show that Canada’s poultry industry was less competitive than that of U.S. Lack of economies of scale, rigid supply system and high input prices in Canada are the main reasons for being less competitive.<br>Le concept de compétitivité a gagné en popularité dans le milieude la recherche au cours des dernières années. L’accord de libre-échange ainsi que la politique libérale ont apporté de nouveau défis pour les entreprises de transformation alimentaire qui œuvrent dans les marchés domestiques et internationaux. L’industrie de transformation avicole est un des secteurs ou le niveau de la compétitivité se doit d’être étudié. Cette thèse a pour but de faire la comparaison entre les industries de transformation avicole canadiennes et américaines. La compétitivité de ces industries est donc étudiée au niveau des industries ainsi qu’au niveau des firmes, et les facteurs tant internes qu’externes déterminant la compétitivité sont présentés. La comparaison est faite au niveau des prix, du ratio de valeur ajoutée, et du taux de croissance de production. Les résultats démontrent que l’industrie canadienne de transformation avicole est moins compétitive que sa voisine américaine. Le niveau peu élevé des économies d’échelle réalisées, la rigidité du système d’offre, ainsi que le prix élevé des intrants canadiens sont les principales raisons expliquant cette différence. fr

The International competitiveness of Jordan's manufacturing sector has recently been of considerable concern to officials in Jordan. This study examines Jordan's capacity to compete successfully in foreign markets and with imports in Jordan's market, and the impact of the recent policies on the price and short-run aspects of competitiveness for a period from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. Unlike previous studies, assessment and analysis of Jordan's relative competitive position are built on indicators constructed exclusively for the manufacturing sector covering import, export, and overall dimensions of competitiveness. The OECD model has been employed using export, import and producer prices, and trade double weights for manufactures. The results show that Jordan's competitiveness deteriorated until the mid-1980s. Subsequently, competitiveness improved with the most pronounced gains being achieved at the end of the 1980s and in the early 1990s, particularly in import and overall competitiveness. The maintenance of a strong Jordanian dinar associated with other unfavourable internal and external developments in Jordan's and competitors' prices before the mid-1980s, and the favourable developments in these prices including the devaluation of the Jordanian dinar at the end of the 1980s, may explain the initial deterioration in competitiveness and the subsequent improvement. Between the mid-1970s and the late-1980s the gains achieved in import competitiveness process were reflected in most years in declines in the import penetration ratio; and in the case of the export competitiveness process were translated into higher market shares. The Constant-Market-Share approach shows that one-third of the expansion in Jordan's manufactured exports was attributable to improved competitiveness. The Commodity effect, particularly for chemicals, was favourable to this expansion, while the concentration of exports on the sluggish import demand of the Middle Eastern countries resulted in a slight unfavourable market effect.

This thesis proposes a construct to measure the competitiveness of Brazilian tourist destinations and orient the actions of public and private tourism managers. The model of this study is based on a relevant literature review, a panel with specialists that have expertise in Brazilian tourism and field research. The investigation was carried out in 15 Brazilian tourist cities, representative of the socioeconomic diversity that characterises the heterogeneity of a developing country. The results of the study show the level of competitiveness of these 15 destinations according to the 13 dimensions proposed in the model, identifying the strong and weak points of local tourism. An assessment was carried out in detail that should serve to assist public managers in the strategic planning of these cities now and in the future. As a complementary result, the study may be successfully replicated in other destinations, thus initiating a historical series for monitoring the competitiveness of Brazilian tourist destinations.

Mestrado em Finanças<br>A competitividade fiscal entre Estados Membros, traz potenciais benefícios para as multinacionais aos quais não são acessíveis às empresas domésticas, criando uma vantagem competitiva não natural. Esses benefícios podem ser traduzidos pela redução de taxas de imposto sobre lucros e/ou por um conjunto de regras fiscais que permitem a canalização e alocação de tais lucros, através de royalties, juros e preços de transferência para territórios com menor carga tributária. A problemática está não só quando estimula uma distorção da concorrência entre empresas multinacionais e domésticas, mas também para o comum contribuinte europeu que deve suportar a soma das receitas públicas perdidas com a evasão fiscal legal. O estudo tem como objetivo verificar se os argumentos para a competitividade fiscal são significantes. Tendo uma abordagem diferente de estudos similares anteriores, pretende comparar dois diferentes indicadores de competitividade fiscal. Um indicador já estudado e testado (taxas de imposto representado a carga fiscal) e outro criado através de um questionário feito a especialistas do sistema fiscal de cada estado membro. Para além de confirmar a maioria das conclusões da literatura anterior, o estudo conclui que os argumentos à competitividade fiscal estão, de um modo geral, mais fortemente correlacionados com o novo indicador do que com a carga fiscal. Mesmo devido a limitações dos dados, o estudo sugere o novo indicador como bom indicador de competitividade fiscal.<br>Tax competitiveness between member states brings potential benefits to multinationals, not accessible to domestic firms. It creates an unnatural competitive advantage. These benefits can be translated into reduced tax rates on profits and/or by a set of tax rules that allows the channeling and allocation of such income (via royalties, interest and transfer prices) to territories with a lower tax burden. It becomes a problem not only when it stimulates a distortion of competition among MNEs and domestics but also for the common European taxpayer that must cope the sum of public revenue lost to legal tax avoidance. Because of the great amounts at stake and relatively new types of business model, the theme is a cooperation challenge in EU. The study aims to verify if the arguments for tax competitiveness are significant. Taking a different approach from previous similar studies, it intends to compare two different indicators of fiscal competitiveness. An indicator already studied and tested (tax rates as tax burden representative) and, and indicator created through a questionnaire, made to specialists of the of each member states tax system. In addition to confirming most of the conclusions of previous literature, the study concludes that the arguments for fiscal competitiveness are generally more strongly correlated with the new indicator than with the tax burden. Provincial competitiveness is strategically and imperatively important for China to achieve and sustain its economic leadership in the global economy. Albeit recent attention of scholars and government officials, the studies to date have produced limited empirical evidence that could aid policy makers to understand the contributing factors and development strategies for provincial competitiveness. Hence, this thesis develops a production approach to decompose Chinese provincial competitiveness index into two productive-efficiency-based components, so as to uncover development strategies hidden in the index. The resulting model fully retains the information embodied in the original index and implements a mechanism to generate development strategies. Applying the proposed model to China’s provincial data of competitiveness for the period 2005-2008, the thesis finds that coastal provinces can adopt an unbalanced development strategy by expanding their relatively uncompetitive sectors. For western provinces, however, what is better for them is to take the balanced development strategy through simultaneous enhancement of every aspect of the competitiveness index. Moreover, a combination of the two strategies would better match the specific circumstances of some particular provinces. Besides that, the results show that reducing provincial disparity in terms of competitiveness would firstly require focusing on narrowing the regional gap. In addition, this thesis attempts to seek a set of benchmark weights for dimensions of provincial competitiveness.

The success of an enterprise in the market largely depends on how well it solves the problem of ensuring the adequacy of the chosen ways of achieving the objectives, on the one hand, and the availability of resources and market situation - on the other. This is a task belongs to a range of problems of strategic marketing management, or rather one of them - strategic marketing planning.<br>Наиболее заметным сегодня в Украине является усиление конкуренции на рынках потребительских товаров. For companies to be successful in today’s economy, they need to be able to identify and sustain the value of their knowledge base in order to nurture, exploit and guard it (Duane &Hitt, 2005) (Goel, et al., 2010). Knowledge Evaluation is the gathering name for assessing knowledge assets or clusters. There are several models for valuing knowledge components provided in literature, some of which have been used and reviewed by researchers at Technische Universität München where this thesis work was performed, see (Schmidt, et al.,2013) (Schmidt, et al., 2014). However, an assessment tool for the reviewing competitiveness of knowledge assets was sought. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the possibility, and usefulness, of evaluating the competitiveness of knowledge assets. This followed by reviewing if such an evaluation could be a beneficial tool in ProductDevelopment (PD) processes.In implementing this thesis work a literature review was used to find the sought evaluation.Following, the found valuation models were reviewed, and then their best aspects were chosen and built into a new model. This model was then implemented at a company. This implementation with some articles for literature support was used to answer if the model could be beneficial in product development processes. Results say that it is possible to perform an evaluation of the competitiveness of knowledge. The proposed model here was thought useful in providing a gap analysis. It could be especially useful in PD processes, as they are knowledge intensive activities, and thus, require a full understanding of the knowledge base.<br>Idag måste företag kunna identifiera och bibehålla värdet i sin kunskapsportfolio för att utveckla, nyttja och skydda den och på så sätt hålla sig konkurrenskraftiga (Duane & Hitt,2005) (Goel, et al., 2010). Kunskapsevaluering är ett sammanfattande begrepp för när kunskapsresurser eller kluster värderas. Det finns en mängd tillgängliga metoder för att evaluera kunskapsresurser, varav några har använts i forskningen på Technische Universität München där detta arbete utfördes (se (Schmidt, et al., 2013) (Schmidt, et al., 2014)). Dock söktes en modell som undersöker hur enskilda kunskapsresurser bidrar till ett företags konkurrenskraft. Från detta formulerades målet med detta arbete, vilket var att undersöka möjligheten, och användbarheten, av att evaluera konkurrenskraft hos kunskapsresurser, för att sedan se om det kan vara till nytta i produktutvecklingsarbete. För att ta reda på om det var möjligt att evaluera kunskapsresursers bidrag till ett företagskonkurrenskraft gjordes en litteratursökning. De funna modellerna analyserades sedan och enny modell byggdes upp av de bästa komponenterna av dem. Sedan testades den nya modellenpå ett företag. För att svara på frågan om modellen kunde vara ett användbart redskap iproduktutvecklingsprocesser användes dels resultat från testet på företaget samt ännu en,mindre, litteratursökning.Resultat från arbetet visar att det är möjligt att evaluera konkurrenskraft hos enskildakunskapsresurser. Modellen i detta arbete ansågs användbar då den försåg testföretaget meden ”gap-analys”. Eftersom produktutveckling är en så kallad kunskapsintensiv aktivitet, där enfullständig bild av dess kunskapsbas är fördelaktig, kan modellen även vara användbarspecifikt för sådana företag.

The need for government organizations to become competitive is growing with the huge instability in the economy. In parallel, Knowledge Management (KM) has been rapidly growing in the past decade as a source of influence on organisational development practices. Furthermore, the past decade research approaches largely failed to show the importance of KM initiatives in creating synergy with other initiatives to an extent that would lead towards organizational competitiveness. This study address whether KM holistically influences the different organisational development practices, specifically in the context of the government sector. To ascertain the relationships between KM and four prevalent organisational development practices identified in the literature and increasingly used in practice, a quantitative survey approach was undertaken using a series of researcher-developed scales. Based on the literature review, Organisational Excellence (OE), Organisational Learning (OL), Organisational Innovation (OI) and Organisational Competitiveness (OC) were identified to be the most repeated relations with KM. A conceptual framework was designed to test the concept of the holistic influence of KM on the four identified organisational development practices. A total of 625 valid responses were collected from top and middle management from 54 government organizations in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The model was statistically tested according to the research hypotheses by regression analysis then Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Results reveal strong and significant correlations amongst the five prevalent organisational development practices. Even though the holistic influence of the model could not be confirmed, findings show positive KM influence on the remaining organisational development practices, thus KM is an essential factor for government organisations. Besides illustrating KM as an important source of influence, this research establishes a new direction that helps to integrate all governmental organisations initiatives in relevance to organisation development practices leading to better competitiveness. The study makes a novel contribution since it increases the probability of a holistic approach model that brings support for the decision makers to enhance the overall government organizations competitiveness. The scale developed for the model tested can be generalised and used as a self assessment tool for organisational practices in KE. This work sets a baseline for KM practices in the Government of Bahrain and similar GCC Governments and can act as a reference for researchers on KM and competitiveness in the emerging economies countries. Nevertheless, the model need to be further investigated in future research to explore the missing variables in this model to make it more fit. Therefore, the concept of holistic model needs to be further subject to empirical investigations to explore its viability. The major limitation of this research is it been addressed only in the government sector and in one country.

Professional design firms are knowledge-intensive firms that provide customised solutions for clients through their highly educated, professionally trained and accredited employees. Design services are strategic services important to the trade and development of all countries. Design services are a key part of the innovation process in the project development as well as a key input in the value creation process for stakeholders. There has been little research- into how Chinese design firms have changed in order to operate successfully in the social market economy and how they will grow and compete in the future. This research considers the factors affecting the competitiveness of the Chinese design sector. It primarily looks into the large design firms and focuses on the domestic design market. The research aims to answer the main question: "What are the factors that affect the competitiveness of design firms in China's design market?" The research uses a theoretical framework deduced from the literature. The essence of the framework is that both the external and internal environment of a firm must be taken into account when considering its competitiveness. A PEST analysis, the modified five forces model, and the resource-based view were all employed. The research used a cross-sectional analysis of data gathered from questionnaire and interview surveys of industry experts. The qualitative data was the main basis for the contribution to this research; the quantitative data was used to analyze and support the qualitative data. A Competitiveness Assessment Model for Designers (CAMD) was developed. The CAMD consists of a competitiveness index including the sources of competitive advantage of Chinese design firms, and competitiveness aggregation methods comprising the logical procedures and the data collection and processing methods. The CAMD was validated through case studies.

This dissertation presents the results of using a multidisciplinary "business policy" approach to examine the competitive situation of UK vehicle component manufacturers. With the cooperation of the companies involved in six product sectors, detailed studies have been made comparing the strategies and performances of UK competitors over several years, as well as those of selected competitors in Japan, Germany and the USA. The UK vehicle component industry has undergone an unprecedented decline in performance. The causes of this decline are many. External factors outside the control of the companies concerned include the declining competitiveness of UK based vehicle manufacturers and the exceptionally unfavourable UK business environment including the pressure on real wages. But the decline in competitiveness of UK vehicle component manufacturers is not solely due to these factors outside their own control. Just as important is the lack of strategic management capability at the top management level of the companies themselves. Before the recession many of the companies failed to see the changes that were occurring in the pattern of competition and that their competitive position was slipping. Few recognised that competition was becoming more European or even more global. Even fewer were able to effectively analyse the situation, select a viable long term strategy and pursue it with commitment. Such a strategy required a choice of the part of the market in which to compete as well as how to compete particularly as far as longer term production strategy (productivity, quality, flexible manufacturing systems etc) was concerned. The recession only added to this problem and obscured the underlying cause. Many companies were forced to retrench but still have not recognised the longer term strategic issues which must be addressed if the long term decline is to be reversed.

This research examines the new urban policy that, in the last decades, has put emphasis on urban regeneration based on urban renewal and city marketing, particularly through the use of events and mega projects by global star architects. Through the case study of Valencia (Spain), which, in the last years, has become a good example of an entrepreneurial city, the study sets out to, first, discover the implications of the new urban policy for the built environment, planning practices and democratic governance, second, analyse the economic, political, social and cultural factors that have led to the use of such urban policy and, third, understand the actual processes and actors involved in it. Although emblematic projects are expected to generate economic activity and employment, this research has shown that – given their very limited effectiveness for economic and social regeneration and their inequality in the distribution of benefits – the main reasons for the implementation of these projects are related to the economic, political and professional interests of different groups and, to ideational reasons, such as the ‘politics of self-esteem’. The case of Valencia has particularly shown the significance of a hegemonic project such as the creation of a new regional state from a political, economic and identity viewpoints. It has also highlighted the crucial role in the implementation of the urban policy played by a boosterist urban regime, brought together and kept in place by the local and regional governments. Also, the involvement of and, relationship between local and global actors, particularly in processes of mediation and translation of interests. Finally, it has provided evidence of how mega projects and events have become a conduit of state restructuring and neoliberal globalisation by fostering a mode of governance characterized by the privatisation of decision making and the lack of transparency and democratic control.

regulated the rooibos industry. In 1993 the industry was deregulated and competition between
different role players in the industry emerged. In this study competitiveness is analysed from
both a historical as well as a modem -day perspective.
Modem economic theory defines that competition is good for all industry and that it leads to
economic development. In the case of the rooibos industry, one could be inclined to think that
the unique character of the product and the fact that the Control Board had established a
marketing mechanism would limit competition and rivalry in the post -Control Board era.
Inthis study it was determined that deregulation in this industry coincided with very intense
price-driven rivalry in the export market whilst very little rivalry occurred in the domestic
market.
The information for this thesis was obtained from published Annual Reports of the Rooibos
Control Board and from personal interviews with the main role players in the industry.
Two strategies that could enhance the competitiveness of this industry are recommended:
1. Repositioning rooibos as a gourmet health tea.

The aim of this research is to investigate the utilisation of Computational Intelligence methods for constructing Synthetic Composite Indicators (SCI). In particular for delivering a Unified Macro-Knowledge Competitiveness Indicator (UKCI) to enable consistent and transparent assessments and forecasting of the progress and competitiveness of Knowledge Based Economy (KBE). SCI are assessment tools usually constructed to evaluate and contrast entities performance by aggregating intangible measures in many areas such as economy, education, technology and innovation. SCI key value is inhibited in its capacity to aggregate complex and multi-dimensional variables into a single meaningful value. As a result, SCIs have been considered as one of the most important tools for macro-level and strategic decision making. Considering the shortcomings of the existing SCI, this study is proposing an alternative approach to develop Intelligent Synthetic Composite Indicators (iSCI). The suggested approach utilizes Fuzzy Proximity Knowledge Mining technique to build the qualitative taxonomy initially, and Fuzzy c-mean is employed to form the new composite indicators. To illustrate the method of construction for the proposed iSCI, a fully worked application is presented. The presented application employs Information and Communication Technology (ICT) real variables to form a new unified ICT index. The weighting and aggregation results obtained were compared against classical approaches namely Vector Quantisation and Principal Component Analysis, Factor Analysis and the Geometric mean to weight and aggregate synthetic composite indicators. This study also compares and contrasts Optimal Completion Strategy and the Nearest Prototype Strategy to substitute missing values. The validity and robustness of the techniques are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. The developed iSCI concept is generalised to build the suggested UKCI which ultimately is equipped with short-term forecasting capabilities. This achieved by a hybridised model consisting of Artificial Neural Networks and Panel Data: Time Series Cross Sectional to predict and forecast the competitiveness of KBE. The proposed model has the capability of forecasting and aggregating seven major KBE indicators into a unified meaningful map that places any KBE in its league even with limited data points. The Unified Knowledge Economy Forecast Map reflects the overall position of homogeneous knowledge economies, and it can be used to visualise, identify or evaluate stable, progressing or accelerating KBEs. In order to show the value added by the new development techniques, the UKCI is applied to fifty-seven countries initially, then expanded to include the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as a special case study. In total seventy-three countries were included, that are representative of developed, developing and underdeveloped economies. The final and overall results obtained, suggest novel, intelligent and unbiased results compared to traditional or statistical methods when building, not only the UKCI, but for any future composite indicator for many other fields.

UK policy-makers, politicians and practitioners over the past few years have based the narrative of competitiveness around the idea of 'rebalancing the economy'. This entails viewing competitiveness as a rational process (through the Porterian lens) and identifies strategies from a top-down perspective. However, there is generally a lack of understanding of how competitiveness is practiced from the bottom-up. Therefore, this study adopts a practice-based perspective to investigate competitiveness from a practitioner's perspective. In this thesis, Bourdieu's habitus and reflexivity is used along with Maclean, Harvey and Chia's notion of life history storytelling through the lens of sensemaking and legitimacy. The thesis employs a constructivist perspective to collect and analyse qualitative evidence from 41 practitioners during the two phases of data collection. The data was analysed using thematic analysis, codes generated and inferences made. In the pilot-study (Delphi-study and semi-structured interviews), senior strategists (20) practicing in local enterprise partnerships (LEP's), universities, regional development agencies, manufacturing associations and various manufacturing firms confirmed the initial assumption that policy is prescriptive and rationalistic. The second phase consisted of semi-structured interviews (21) with senior, middle and lower level practitioners belonging to various types of manufacturing firms and allied services. The main contributions of the thesis are that (1) reflexive practitioner's past experiences shaped existing practices and perceptions of competitiveness and (2) three distinct thresholds of competitiveness inform the position of the practitioner and their desire to be competitive. This has implications for policy and practice.

The rapid expansion of dental service organizations (DSOs) continues to disrupt the traditional dental practice model and there was a 12.2% increase in DSOs between 2015 and 2016. Some solo and small group dental practice owners lack strategies to adapt their businesses to be successful in newly competitive markets including DSOs. Grounded in systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative multicase study was to explore strategies dental practice owners use to adapt their businesses to be successful in newly competitive markets. The participants included 3 solo and 2 small group dental practice owners in central Kentucky who demonstrated success in developing and leveraging strategies to be successful in newly competitive markets. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and company documents. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The 3 major themes identified were patient care and experience, patient and community relationships, and adaptation and innovation. The application of effective strategies identified in this study may have implications for positive social change by enabling dental practitioners to continue to provide access to outstanding dental care in the communities they serve. A second implication for positive social change is the potential economic benefits to the community through employing dentists and clinical staff, providing commerce to suppliers and business service providers, and tax contributions to the city, state, and U.S. federal government.

However, the stamping field faces the rougher challenge nowadays. The enterprisers who face the hard-time situation could not solely depend on the past success to guide to the future path. And they could not ask the government for using subvention to pass through the difficulty. Most important of all, they should find an opportunity by themselves.
This article uses “the stamping field” for research goal, and points out the structure of “reinforcement the stamping field competitiveness.” This research analyses the stamping field in the beginning, and then discusses about production management, business diagnosis, upgrading the competitiveness, automation and e-Business of manufacture field literatures. According to these interrelated information, I designed the diagnose lists and evaluation test for interviewing managers who work in each field.
The research first designs the suitable diagnose lists in stamping field, with this list, proprietors can do self-evaluation to see the advantages and disadvantages at both side. Therefore, the proprietors can consider that how to be stronger and better. Then, this research analyzes the six different companies by in-deep interviews and concludes all data. The final report could be the “Know-how” and the method of improvement for reinforcing the competitiveness.
According to the growing path concluded from this research can point out the issue: for SME which dose not have enough capital, the best method is “rooting deep.” If the business have no choice but to move out oversea, to strong the internal part is the chief issue to surviving in other place. After the self-evaluation and self-diagnose, enterprises can apply any active way and principle to upgrade themselves. This kind of solution may lead the business strong and earn profits. Finally, it would be the easy and suitable way to overseas investing.
The conclusion and consulting of this research are basic and important. Most important of all, these issues and items are conceptions and tools for helping the enterprises to “deep cultivation.”

Pimentel is a Douro valley wine SME, in tending to increase its international scope. Hence, to derive potential foreign markets, a PESTEL-based geographical analysis was performed, resulting in a country ranking and clustering of 103 countries, from which the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and South Korea were selected to perform an in-depth analysis. Given their potential, Germany and South Korea were chosen for direct exporting, being provided with prospect partners and marketing recommendations, based on the STP and 4P frameworks. A financial assessment through the Discounted Cash Flow method proved the expansion to both markets to be viable.

However, just according to the financial reports, they do not image the competitiveness of the hospitals correctly. As a result, this research is devoted to develop a new set of performance evaluation analysis criteria to weigh the competitiveness of hospitals exactly.
The study is trying to use Porter’s diamond structure as the framework and the model of the world competitiveness from International Institute for Management Development as the research method to transform to the model of hospital competitiveness and hope to simplify the criteria of world competitiveness to describe the hospital competitiveness criteria suitably.
The methods of this research are analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and survey by questionnaire. First, this research makes use of references and focus group to take out some unappropriate criteria and choose the fit criteria for the hospital competitiveness. Second, it has to build the hierarchical structure and use the questionnaire to arrange the relational matrix by the hospital management and weigh the dimensions and criteria of the competitiveness.
On the other hand, this research is gathering the information about the medical center competitiveness by questionnaire and calculates the standard value to rank from the most to the least competitive by the IMD methods. Besides, this study is selected one medical center to make dimension analysis, strongest and weakest criteria analysis, and simulation analysis.
The results of this research are as the following
1. The variety level of hospitals has different weight on the competitive dimensions and criteria. Medical centers focus on the management dimension which has 37.1%, the district hospitals focus on productivity dimension which has 29.7%, the regional hospitals focus on management dimension which has 29.1%.
2. The ranking of the hospital competitiveness is the B＞A＞C＞D＞E from the questionnaire. We also find that the B medical center has the core competence in the management and human source dimensions.

These new upstarts have become formidable competitors that the developed world cannot take lightly. The study is to perform an international comparison on Logistics industry and port operation efficiency on emerging market. Using data from transportation and freight service industry, this study first conducts Revealed Comparative Advantage approach to investigate logistics competitiveness in G7 countries, BRICs and The Next 11, then uses Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate the container ports with the biggest import and export cargo volumes in G7 countries, BRICs and The Next 11. We found that the RCA analysis shows that Korea and Egypt still have relative comparative advantage over its industrialized counterparts except for Japan and France in the transportation service industry. Then, India, Korea, Turkey and Iran in freight service industry are more competitive than advanced countries except for Japan and France. Interestingly, the DEA results also indicate that the efficiency value of container port in Bangladesh and China were superior to those in developed countries.

博士<br>國立中山大學<br>企業管理學系研究所<br>104<br>Developing countries in Asia-Pacific region have entered a new and critical phase in the industrial and economy development since its rapid economic growth. Our pilot research on logistic efficiency shows that the relationship between logistics efficiency and corruption exhibits concavity for developing countries in Asia but is convex for advanced economies. This suggests that some important logistics issues exist and needs to be further explored and investigated in Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, this dissertation attempts to explore some important issues from threefold objective.
The first objective is to explore logistics research published in main-stream logistics journals and function as a theoretical ground for later analysis in the following two phase. The content analysis and social network analysis are employed to explore collaboration linkages on authors, regions, subjects, and topics on Asia from the perspective of published research articles in the recognized logistics and supply chain journals. The evidence suggests that logistics management research in Asia accounts for barely 10 percent of the 2,513 papers published between 2003-2013.
The second objective is to apply the generalized metafrontier Malmquist productivity index (gMMPI) to measure the port productivity of developed countries (DCs) and the developing countries (LDCs) in Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). The results indicate that the average rate of utilized capacity among the ports of APEC members was only 65.7%, which means that another 34.3% of additional throughput can be handled with the same level of resources.
The third objective attempts to explore the national logistics competitiveness in APEC. Using data from the transportation industry over the period 2002- 2011, this study investigates logistics competitiveness using revealed comparative advantage (RCA) model. Further, we explore the efficiency of container port operations using metafrontier production function model. First, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan for developed countries and Chile and Brunei for developing countries were comparative advantage in RCA model. Second, the ports in Hong Kong and Singapore had efficiency level in metafrontier model. Finally, the efficiency of port operations had positive relationship with container throughput.
