Abstract: The constant challenge in social interactions involves making informed decisions in the face of competitive and cooperative dilemmas. The decision-making process can be influenced by various factors present in the social context. According to the behavior-pattern-categorization framework of information acquisition, potential biases may develop at all stages of decision-making as information about social context is progressively entered and integrated. In this study, employing the Chicken Game, we investigated the influence of varying information levels within the behavior-pattern-categorization framework (i.e., competitiveness of behavior choice, uncertainty of behavior pattern, and sociality of category) on decision-making in the dilemma of competition and cooperation. Combined with reinforcement learning models, our findings from three experiments showed that participants exhibited basic complementary behavior, becoming less competitive against highly competitive opponents and vice versa. Notably, individuals exhibited varying adaptation rates to different levels of opponent competitiveness and fluctuations. Specifically, participants adapted slower to highly competitive opponents and faster to cooperative opponents. This asymmetric adaptation in social learning is related to the rate at which various levels of information are updated. The current study disentangles the different levels of information acquisition and highlights the asymmetric processing that can occur during the updating of information within each level.

This paper is aimed to clarify the definition and categorization of discounts as well as pro- and anticompetitive effects of discounts. The author applied qualitative methods to the research. The modern literature review unfolds the gap of proper discounts definition, which is proposed to be covered by five-dimensions approach to discounts categorization. Based on such aspects of discount scheme as time, product, threshold, distribution level and customer, the approach provides comprehensive and uniform characteristics of discount. It allows assessing effects of competition, which are classified in two groups. Pro-competitive effects include stimulation of demand, decreasing cost due to economy of scale, solving coordination problems within a supply chain. Anti-competitive effects encompass predation scheme, raising rival’s cost, exclusive dealing, leverage and exclusionary bundling. The importance of correct assessment of the discounts by antitrust authorities is high as an overenforcement in this sphere may lead to adverse effect on total welfare.

Recently many techniques, e.g., Google or AltaVista, are available for classifying well-organized, hierarchical crisp categories from human constructed web pages such as that in Yahoo. However, given the current rate of web-page production, there is an urgent need of classifiers that are able to autonomously classify web-page categories that have overlaps. In this paper, we present a competitive learning method for this problem, which based on a new objective function and gradient descent scheme. Experimental results on real-world data show that the approach proposed in this paper gives a better performance in classifying randomly-generated, knowledge-overlapped categories as well as hierarchical crisp categories.

Sports play a significant role in improving human health and financial status, particularly in competitive sports. It is also closely related to the prestige of a region or country. To achieve maximum results, appropriate guidance is required, which can be provided by relevant parties. Policy makers require a specific coaching system based on the characteristics of different sports, which should be carried out continuously with systematically arranged stages. With numerous sports available, it can be challenging to monitor the progress and evaluation of each sport. Therefore, it is necessary to categorize sports based on their characteristics. This research aims to form categories of sports that are adapted to the various characteristics of each sport. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The sports that are used as references are those that are competed in the Olympics, as well as those that are competed in Indonesia, especially in National Sports Week (PON). The sample includes 39 sports. After analyzing the characteristics of sports, the following categorizations have been produced: accuracy sports, martial arts, extreme sports, assessment sports, games sports, racquet sports, and measurable sports. Keywords: Category, Identification, Sport, Olympics.

Multi-label feature selection is an important task for text categorization. This is because it enables learning algorithms to focus on essential features that foreshadow relevant categories, thereby improving the accuracy of text categorization. Recent studies have considered the hybridization of evolutionary feature wrappers and filters to enhance the evolutionary search process. However, the relative effectiveness of feature subset searches of evolutionary and feature filter operators has not been considered. This results in degenerated final feature subsets. In this paper, we propose a novel hybridization approach based on competition between the operators. This enables the proposed algorithm to apply each operator selectively and modify the feature subset according to its relative effectiveness, unlike conventional methods. The experimental results on 16 text datasets verify that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods.

Now a day, usage of mobile devices is becoming indispensable. This is evident with current mobile penetration rates reaching 100% and even more in some countries. Customers across the world are enjoying competitive prices due to high competition among telecommunication companies. As a result of this, it is mandatory for mobile companies to provide high quality services to their customers to retain them. One aspect which will maximize customers’ trust and lead to high retention rate is to offer them a suitable plan that matches their usage. Mobile customer usage categorization is therefore an essential task to develop intelligent business plans. Personalized recommendation system is needed to dynamically adapt the different customer behaviours with the most appropriate plan for them. In this paper we propose a new automatic approach for costumers’ categorization. This will be the basis for the recommendation system. The proposed method is built using Fuzzy rule and aims at usage behaviour prediction. The rules was extracted from real customer data obtained from a leading provider. Comparison study with other categorization methods has been conducted and showed superior result and demonstrated the potential advantage of the proposed fuzzy based method.

The bags of feature and feature vocabulary based approaches have been presented for image categorization due to their simplicity and competitive performance. Some modified versions have been subsequently proposed, incorporating the methods such as adapted vocabularies, fast indexing, and Gaussian mixture models. In this paper, we propose an improvement of replacing the Harris-affine detection method by a random sampling procedure together with an increased number of sample points. Experimental results show that this new method improves categorization accuracy on a five-category problem using the Caltech-4 dataset. It is concluded that random sampling produces higher attainable point density and better categorization performance.

This dissertation provides a cultural-cognitive perspective on the relationship between cooperation and competition within organizations. Instead of explicitly defining the relationship between cooperation and competition, I examine lay beliefs about the relationship and the impact of these beliefs on perceptions and behavior. This dissertation consists of two studies. In the first study, I examine the role of peoples’ categorization of competitive behaviors as cooperative or non-cooperative in teams. I assess the influence of dialectical reasoning, a culturally-shaped reasoning style, on the categorization of competitive behaviors and the reaction to competitive behaviors within teams. I test my predictions with a laboratory experiment with participants in the US and China. The analyses from this study reveal cultural differences in perceptual and behavioral reactions to competitive behaviors, with differences partially attributed to reasoning style and categorization. In the second study, I examine the role of people’s categorization of competitive behaviors as cooperative or non-cooperative in working relationships. I assess the influence of culture and categorization on people’s ego-centric network of working relationships. I test my predictions with a survey of working professionals in the US and China. The analyses from this study demonstrate that people who categorize certain competitive behaviors as cooperative are more likely to be more cooperative with people they are more competitive with instead of having exclusively cooperative or competitive relationships. The analyses also reveal national cultural differences in people’s networks of working relationships that are partially attributable to categorization of competitive behaviors. By empirically connecting culture and reasoning style to cooperative and competitive behavior in teams and working relationships, this research enhances our understanding of fundamental aspects of organizations, suggesting a new approach to examining the influence of societal factors in behavior within organizations.

Traditionally, the discourse on race relations in the U.S. has focused on relations between Whites and ethnic minorities, with little being known about the antecedents and consequences of inter-minority prejudice. This paper will present results from two studies that were conducted with Asian, Black, and Latino undergraduate students, assessing motivations to embrace a collective identity with ethnic minorities (versus express prejudice towards other ethnic minority groups). Blacks,’ Asians’, and Latinos’ ethnic group identification, as well their identification with a superordinate "people of color" (POC) category were assessed. POC identification was found to be closely aligned with one's political beliefs (e.g., perceptions that the system is unjust, and that racial minorities face discrimination in the U.S.) For Asian participants, POC identification predicted more positive attitudes towards other ethnic minority groups perceived to face similar discrimination in the U.S. (e.g., Latinos and Blacks.) However, Blacks' identification as POC actually predicted negative attitudes towards Asians, who were not seen as facing the same barriers to upward mobility as other racial minority groups in the U.S. The results indicate that the politics of POC identification might actually contribute to increased tension between ethnic minorities in the U.S.; implications for more effecting coalition building between racial minorities in the U.S. are also discussed in this paper.

As humans, we like to see who is stronger, richer, better, or cleverer. As we also (1) love lists, (2) are competitive, and (3) are jealous of other people, we like ranking. We can rank some situations objectively: students ranked by their heights reflects objectivity. However, many “top-10” (or 21, 33, etc.) lists are based on subjective categorization and give only the illusion of objectivity. In fact, we don’t always want to be seen objectively since we don’t mind having a better image or rank than we deserve. The book applies scientific theories to everyday experience by raising and answering questions like: Are college ranking lists objective? How do we rank and rate countries based on their fragility, level of corruption, or even happiness? How do we find the most relevant webpages? How are employees ranked? The book is offered to people whose neighbor has a fancier car; employees who are being ranked by their supervisors; managers who are involved in ranking but may have qualms about the process; businesspeople interested in creating better visibility for their companies; scientists, writers, artists, and other competitors who would like to see themselves at the top of a success list; and college students who are just preparing to enter a new phase of social competition. Readers will engage in an intellectual adventure to better understand the difficulties of navigating between objectivity and subjectivity and to better identify and modify their place in real and virtual communities by combining human and computational intelligence.

This article surveys recent literature of comparative politics, searching for a clue to categorization of interwar authoritarian regimes in East-Central Europe among the sub-categories of authoritarian regime. Theory of authoritarian regime has revived since recent cases of transition from dictatorship fail to complete the process of democratization and political scientists began to refer these cases to authoritarian regime, rather than to diminished sub-types of democracy. After reviewing how interwar East-Central European countries were mentioned scantily in the classic literature of authoritarian regime (Juan Linz, Guillermo O’Donnell), it examines the theories of electoral authoritarian regime (Andreas Schedler), competitive authoritarian regime (Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way), one-party or hegemonic party dictatorship (Barbara Geddes, Beatriz Magaloni, etc.), and post-Soviet countries’ regime cycle (Henry Hale). In conclusion, it confirms that the naming of electoral authoritarian regime fits well, but we can maintain the characterization of authoritarian regime with hegemonic party system also. It criticizes the theory of competitive authoritarian regime, because this theory overemphasizes external factors and underemphasizes domestic factors, although it draws an explicit parallel between Central European countries in the 1920s and current authoritarian countries. The article emphasizes the importance of bringing a viewpoint of dynamism or internal logic into regime analysis and, methodologically, the importance of contextualized comparison in political science.

AbstractWith the rapid expansion of academic literature and the proliferation of preprints, researchers face growing challenges in manually organizing and labeling large volumes of articles. The NSLP 2024 FoRC Shared Task I addresses this challenge organized as a competition. The goal is to develop a classifier capable of predicting one of 123 predefined classes from the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) taxonomy of research fields for a given article. This paper presents our results.Initially, we enrich the dataset (containing English scholarly articles sourced from ORKG and arXiv), then leverage different pre-trained language Models (PLMs), specifically BERT, and explore their efficacy in transfer learning for this downstream task. Our experiments encompass feature-based and fine-tuned transfer learning approaches using diverse PLMs, optimized for scientific tasks, including SciBERT, SciNCL, and SPECTER2. We conduct hyperparameter tuning and investigate the impact of data augmentation from bibliographic databases such as OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, and Crossref. Our results demonstrate that fine-tuning pre-trained models substantially enhances classification performance, with SPECTER2 emerging as the most accurate model. Moreover, enriching the dataset with additional metadata improves classification outcomes significantly, especially when integrating information from S2AG, OpenAlex and Crossref. Our best-performing approach achieves a weighted F1-score of 0.7415. Overall, our study contributes to the advancement of reliable automated systems for scholarly publication categorization, offering a potential solution to the laborious manual curation process, thereby facilitating researchers in efficiently locating relevant resources.

Proponents and critics alike tend to adjudicate the ethics of sex segregation against the criterion of fairness. In general, fairness supports sex segregation so that women athletes can excel, but there is not yet consensus on who counts as a “woman.” Recent philosophical debates about sex segregation have unfolded as attempts to maximize the fairness of sports policies in light of concerns about biological categorization and social discrimination. We argue that fairness, while an important ideal, is an incomplete framework for organizing competitors and defers vexing questions about gender and justice. This is because, first, fairness can yield contradictory intuitions about the justice of sex-segregated competition; second, it can be overruled by more important values external to sport; third, it threatens to drain sport of its non-competitive virtues; and finally, it effectively masks unjust reasons for grouping athletes in particular ways.

Aggregators are platforms that also control a marketplace for the suppliers’ innovations. Suppliers competing within aggregators are limited by the technology and governance rules of the platform owner. As a consequence, aggregators influence the type and complexity of competitive moves suppliers can implement. Our research investigates the drivers of suppliers’ competitive advantage. We incorporate existing literature on competitive action to identify the categories of moves available to suppliers. Furthermore, we identify three types of orthogonal moves that are unique to competition within aggregators. Finally, we illustrate our advanced categorization in the context of a major food delivery platform. Our preliminary results confirm that suppliers, while bounded to resources exposed by the aggregator, have the opportunity to implement an heterogenous portfolio of moves in their pursuit of competitive advantage. This result calls for empirical research in the context of competition within aggregators in general, and food delivery platforms specifically.

Abstract Oil and gas operators tend to have engineering capability within their organization; however, this capability is one of the difficult attributes to quantify its achievements, scale their performance metrics and measure their performance within specific value stream. This paper will define the types of engineering capabilities and categorize them according to the functions performed into three categories. Furthermore, this paper continues to develop performance metrics measuring each category capabilities in accordance with business strategy perspectives of Profitability, End User and Stakeholders, Internal Processes and Growth & Learning. Establishing engineering sub-organization in national entities and oil and gas operation & production companies is implicitly decided by their management needs and expectations, e.g. technical assurance for compliance with regulations and standards, quality control on the delivered work, in-house design capability for accelerated design and project delivery, innovation and technology adoption, technical expertise to support operation in improving efficiency and reduce downtime, training and development. The first challenge starts with the shortfall in articulating these companies’ management needs and expectations toward their engineering sub-organization and correlate them to the business strategic syntheses. The second challenge comes to map these business strategy perspectives (syntheses) to the applicable strategic objectives. Then, it comes to formulate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) or aggregated KPIs to evaluate the strategic objectives by measuring these performance metrics via their formulas. These formulas are fed with corporate information and data whereas to their outputs scaled and target defined. In process of developing engineering organization categorization and formulating KPIs to each category, a number of key performance indicators (KPIs) are generated to evaluate the categorized sub organization effectiveness based on their organization operating model. Introduction of these KPIs gave better vigilance and assurance to quality of work: this is measured through the number of errors, defects, reworks or scope carryover to next phase that occur in the engineering projects. Also, profitability metric is impacted by number of design and engineering variation claims and their value. While the innovation and continuous Improvement indicator will show the ability of the engineering organization to innovate and improve its processes, methods, and tools. By tracking and analyzing these KPIs, it is possible to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the engineering sub-organization and identify areas for improvement and which engineering categorization most suitable and set the minimum requirements. These generated metrics are driving improvement behaviors and norms within these engineering sub-organizations. Overall, engineering teams are essential for oil and gas production companies to achieve their objectives, improve their performance, and remain competitive in the industry. Without the right categorization of engineering sub-organization, Oil and Gas production companies may struggle to maintain and optimize their operations, address technical challenges, and innovate to meet changing market demands and maintain high reputation.

The aim of the paper is to verify the existence of a market failure in the parking market in the city of Brno with regard to the possibility of providing public support for the construction or operation of parking garages. The paper deals with only one of the signs of market failure, which is the demonstration of imperfect competition. The existence of imperfect competition is conditioned by the dominant position on the market (market share of at least 40%). The market is defined on the basis of walking distance as a key factor for the use of a parking space and on the basis of the categorization of individual types of parking spaces (especially with regard to street parking and parking in car parks and parking garages and P + R parking). The performed analysis did not confirm the existence of imperfect competition on the parking market in the central part of the city of Brno.

People with disabilities (PWD) represent the category of population which due to their impaired abilities have special needs. However, PWD need to have sports activities like all other people in order to maintain and improve their general anthropological status. As such, people with disabilities achieve significant sport results at the highest level. Blind and visually impaired people are a special category of people with disabilities in regards to sports training and competitions, since their physical abilities and characteristics are not impaired compared to people without disabilities, except in the field of sight. Goalball is a team sport designed for blind and visually impaired people and is characteristic among sports of people with disabilities because the rules are not adopted from another sport and adapted for people with disabilities, but are unique. There is no categorization in this sport because all participants, blind and visually impaired, wear special blacked - out eye shades, so that everyone is equal on the court. Goalball requires special physical preparation due to the complexity of the game itself. Although in this sport players occupy only three positions on the field, the time from defending the shot on goal to the end of the attacking phase is 10 seconds, so athletes must have high fitness levels. Depending on the competition schedule, there is a distinct difference between general and special physical preparation, within which special emphasis is placed on individual physical preparation.
