We conducted 2 experiments to examine the effect of compatibility between decision target (making a decision for oneself vs. another person) and processing strategy (alternative- vs. attribute-based) on postdecision satisfaction. The results showed that participants who were making decisions for themselves were more likely to prefer an alternative-based to an attribute-based processing strategy, whereas this effect was reversed for participants who were making decisions for others. A high degree of compatibility between self/other decision and alternative-based/attribute-based processing strategy increased postdecision satisfaction. Moreover, this effect was found to be mediated by decision confidence. Implications and suggestions related to these findings are discussed.

The network effect is a key factor influencing the development of e-business and technological innovation. At the same time, compatibility decisions can determine the success or failure of businesses and technologies. This study explores the compatibility strategies in the context of network effects using a two-stage game-theoretical model for a duopoly. In the first stage, two firms make their compatibility decisions, and in the second stage, two firms are engaged in Bertrand price competition. Major findings are (1) other things being fixed, two firms are more likely to be compatible with each other when they have similar market shares, (2) the compatibility decisions of firms will not be influenced by consumers' switching costs, (3) the order of their compatibility decisions will not change the resulting equilibrium, and (4) based on firms' compatibility decisions, the Bertrand price competition may still lead to market failure, necessitating governmental intervention or regulations.

The existence of conditional decisions becomes dynamic in constitutional review, including their use in procedural constitutional reviews. Constitutional Court Decision No. 91/PUU-XVIII/2020 is the first decision to grant the petition and use a conditional decision model. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, using the conditional decision model in the decision results in discourse among various parties, including government institutions, law enforcers, academics, and the general public. With the growing discourse, this research aims to analyze the compatibility of the conditional decision model in formal constitutional reviews by examining various formal constitutional review decisions and the conditional decisions handed down by the Constitutional Court. This research indicates that the conditional decision is incompatible with formal constitutional review. This can be observed from the incompatibility of conditional decisions with the regulatory design of formal constitutional reviews and their legal consequences.

We study compatibility decisions of two competing platform owners that generate profits through both hardware sales and royalties from content sales. We consider a game-theoretic model in which two platforms offer different standalone utilities to users. We find that incentives to establish one-way compatibility—the platform owner with smaller standalone value grants access to its proprietary content application to users of the competing platform—can arise from the difference in their profit foci. As the difference in the standalone utilities increases, royalties from content sales become less important to the platform owner with greater standalone value, but more important to the other platform owner. One-way compatibility can thus increase asymmetry between the platform owners’ profit foci and, given a sufficiently large difference in the standalone utilities, yields greater profits for both platform owners. We further show that social welfare is greater under one-way compatibility than under incompatibility. We also investigate how factors such as exclusive content and hardware-only adopters affect compatibility incentives. This paper was accepted by Chris Forman, information systems.

Three-way decisions, as a general model for uncertain information processing and decisions, mainly utilize the threshold generated by the decision cost matrix to determine the decision category of the object. However, the determination of the threshold is usually accompanied by varying degrees of subjectivity. In addition, the potential symmetrical relationship between the advantages and disadvantages of the decision cost is also a problem worthy of attention. In this study, we propose a novel intuitionistic fuzzy three-way decision (IFTWD) model based on a three-way granular computing method. First, we present the calculation methods for the possibility of membership state and non-membership state, as well as prove the related properties. Furthermore, we investigate the object information granules, i.e., the fine-grained, medium-grained, and coarse-grained objects, by combining the state probability distribution and probability distribution. Then, for decision and evaluation issues, we define the superiority-compatibility relation and inferiority-compatibility relation for IFTWD model construction. In addition, we use the superiority degree and inferiority degree instead of the original thresholds and design a new method for evaluating decision cost. Finally, we focus on the algorithm research of the proposed model and present an empirical study of agricultural ecological investment in Hubei Province to demonstrate the effectiveness of our model.

Digital platform ecosystems feature interplatform competition. A potential strategy for a platform with market disadvantage is to make itself compatible with competitors to attract multihoming of developers. However, many questions remain unresolved regarding how a platform’s compatibility strategy impacts developers’ multihoming decisions and subsequent app performance. In this study, we use the context of web browser platforms (i.e., Firefox and Chrome) to investigate how the increase in the technological compatibility of a secondary platform (Firefox) influences developer multihoming from a primary dominant platform (Chrome). We theoretically consider how increased platform compatibility influences the trade-offs in developers’ multihoming decisions and their subsequent app development choices. Based on this trade-off perspective, we posit and empirically investigate the effects of increased platform compatibility on developer multihoming, and the subsequent development choices and app performance resulting from multihoming. Our findings illustrate that developers with larger user bases on the primary platform are more willing to multihome than those with smaller bases, but increased platform compatibility reduces this gap and enables developers with smaller user bases to better embrace multihoming. Increased platform compatibility also encourages multihoming developers to develop exclusive apps for the secondary platform. Moreover, increased platform compatibility facilitates multihoming developers to leverage their primary-platform user bases to enhance their secondary-platform app performance, and this effect is influenced by the development type (porting or exclusive development). Our study generates unique insights that add to the theoretical understanding of platform compatibility, multihoming, and platform competition.

AbstractMany factors are considered when making a hiring decision in the National Football League (NFL). One difficult decision that executives must make is who they will select in the offseason. Mathematical models can be developed to aid humans in their decision-making processes because these models are able to find hidden relationships within numeric data. This research proposes the Heuristic Evaluation of Artificially Replaced Teammates (HEART) methodology, which is a mathematical model that utilizes machine learning and statistical-based methodologies to aid managers with their hiring decisions. The goal of HEART is to determine expected and theoretical contribution values for a potential candidate, which represents a player’s ability to increase or decrease a team’s forecasted winning percentage. In order to validate the usefulness of the methodology, the results of a 2007 case study were presented to subject matter experts. After analyzing the survey results statistically, five of the eight decision-making categories were found to be “very useful” in terms of the information that the methodology provided.

Purpose – This article aims to draw on the contingency theory to develop a conceptual model of compatibility between corporate environmental responsibility and business strategy that reflects heterogeneity in this relationship. Four dimensions of compatibility are explored: trade-off, ambidexterity, synergy and symbiosis. Design/methodology/approach – The intended contribution is essentially conceptual. A company case study is included to contribute to the development of the four dimensions of compatibility and support the practical relevance of the model. Twelve in-depth interviews with six managers in different functions of the company were conducted. A grounded theory approach was used to identify and express the patterns of compatibility that emerge from the qualitative data and how these patterns are grounded in managers’ meaning-in-use. Findings – The contribution of the compatibility framework is essentially made to the literature on environmental strategy management, evolved from an implicit and, at most, two-dimensional (win–win and win–lose) conceptualisation of the relationship between green and business strategy into an explicit and multi-dimensionally grounded identification of processes and strategic challenges of corporate environmental and social responsibility. The resulting model contributes to a better understanding of corporate greening as a strategic and moral concern to individuals acting on behalf of business organisations and a greater understanding of the linkages between green and business strategies and operations. Originality/value – By clarifying the construct of corporate environmental sustainability and providing useful directions for theory and practice, this research claims to inform green management decision-making. While the compatibility model is not intended to explain all pathways by which firms may elicit contingencies of relevance to environmental and social responsibility, it is suggested that the model paints a more complete and contextualized picture of environmental management mechanisms in business.

The logical structure of decisions is the objective of the theory of the decision making. This theory helps to assess and overcome the problems in economic policy related decision making. Economic policy is oriented on achieving the predefined goals. These goals are determined by economic situation and many normative attitudes (basic values). There is an agreement on one part of the goals among the majority of developed countries. The laws and resolutions issued by different governments often include economic indicators, including: significant economic growth, high level of employment, appreciating the currency as an indicator of stability of prices, foreign economic relations, foreign economic equilibrium or fair distribution of the income and the property. This is the partial list of the goals, but it is enough to demonstrate that goals are the only means (instruments) for realizing all-inclusive norms of basic public values.

AI systems are being deployed to support human decision making in high-stakes domains such as healthcare and criminal justice. In many cases, the human and AI form a team, in which the human makes decisions after reviewing the AI’s inferences. A successful partnership requires that the human develops insights into the performance of the AI system, including its failures. We study the influence of updates to an AI system in this setting. While updates can increase the AI’s predictive performance, they may also lead to behavioral changes that are at odds with the user’s prior experiences and confidence in the AI’s inferences. We show that updates that increase AI performance may actually hurt team performance. We introduce the notion of the compatibility of an AI update with prior user experience and present methods for studying the role of compatibility in human-AI teams. Empirical results on three high-stakes classification tasks show that current machine learning algorithms do not produce compatible updates. We propose a re-training objective to improve the compatibility of an update by penalizing new errors. The objective offers full leverage of the performance/compatibility tradeoff across different datasets, enabling more compatible yet accurate updates.

Survey data was collected from the chief-level executives of complementors in software industries. The results show that network size of partner’s technologies and complementors’ technological compatibility positively influence partnership retention. Complementors’ technological lock-in positively moderates the relationship between network size and partnership retention. Technological uncertainty of partner’s technologies negatively moderates the relationship among network size, technological lock-in, and partnership retention. But it positively moderates the relationship among complementors’ technological compatibility, technological lock-in, and partnership retention. While incorporating the aspects of network externality and path dependence in technology development into the inter-firm relationship literature, this study contributes to reconciling the possible opposing explanations of their roles, and adds new insights for understanding relationship stability in uncertain network markets.

ObjectivesThe American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association guidelines on primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) recommend using 10-year ASCVD risk estimation models to initiate statin treatment. For guideline-concordant decision-making, risk estimates need to be calibrated. However, existing models are often miscalibrated for race, ethnicity and sex based subgroups. This study evaluates two algorithmic fairness approaches to adjust the risk estimators (group recalibration and equalised odds) for their compatibility with the assumptions underpinning the guidelines’ decision rules.MethodsUsing an updated pooled cohorts data set, we derive unconstrained, group-recalibrated and equalised odds-constrained versions of the 10-year ASCVD risk estimators, and compare their calibration at guideline-concordant decision thresholds.ResultsWe find that, compared with the unconstrained model, group-recalibration improves calibration at one of the relevant thresholds for each group, but exacerbates differences in false positive and false negative rates between groups. An equalised odds constraint, meant to equalise error rates across groups, does so by miscalibrating the model overall and at relevant decision thresholds.DiscussionHence, because of induced miscalibration, decisions guided by risk estimators learned with an equalised odds fairness constraint are not concordant with existing guidelines. Conversely, recalibrating the model separately for each group can increase guideline compatibility, while increasing intergroup differences in error rates. As such, comparisons of error rates across groups can be misleading when guidelines recommend treating at fixed decision thresholds.ConclusionThe illustrated tradeoffs between satisfying a fairness criterion and retaining guideline compatibility underscore the need to evaluate models in the context of downstream interventions.

A greater level of keenness on a rival system’s software intuitively motivates system manufacturers to raise their degrees of compatibility in order to capture more profit from selling software to rival system users. After constructing a game-theoretic model to investigate system manufacturers’ partial compatibility decisions, this paper surprisingly finds that when consumers are keener on a rival system’s software, hardware price competition is relaxed and system manufacturers reduce the degrees of compatibility. This paper also presents the following three results. First, partial compatibility occurs when the expenditure on system goods is relatively low. Second, the optimal degree of compatibility increases in the expenditure on system goods and decreases in hardware production cost. Third, system manufactures suffer losses on selling hardware when keenness on a rival system’s software is relatively low. According to Lee (2013), this result provides a theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon that platform providers often sell hardware platforms close or below cost in the US video game industry [Lee, R (2013). We surveyed attitudes of decision makers involved in making decisions about technology acquisition in hospitals, receiving replies from 989 (72%) anglophone respondents and 201 (68%) from francophone respondents. Respondents split on whether to try unverified procedures, strongly agreed that medical technology should be evaluated, and expressed a desire for technology assessment data. The quality of health care, need, and compatibility with the institution's role and mission were seen as the most important factors affecting acquisitions. Our study suggests that half the battle has been won; decision makers appear convinced that technologies must be evaluated. Organizational mechanisms, however, may still be required to ensure implementation.

ABSTRACT At a time when a single semester of law school can be a significant financial investment, the decision to attend law school should not be made casually. Instead, decisions should be influenced by data, reflection, and an understanding of real-world outcomes. In this article, I present The Legal Career Compatibility Project; a tool to help students make an informed decision about pursuing a career in law. Using Bolles (2003), Phases 1 and 2 help prospective law students determine whether they should pursue a legal career. Phase 3 helps students determine where and how to apply to law school. Considering that the odds of gaining admission to law school are high, conversations about whether one should attend law school are equally, if not more, important than conversations about how to gain admission. The purpose of the project is to influence how decisions to attend law school are made, not to encourage or discourage students from a career in law.

Background: Multiple resources aid the interprofessional health care team when recommending medications for lactating patients. Varying degrees of breastfeeding compatibility and safety are recommended in different resources. New Food and Drug Administration labeling for lactation is being phased in to provide more consistent language in safety recommendations. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate lactation recommendations for select medications from different drug information resources to determine the compatibility recommendations for lactating patients. Methods: The breastfeeding recommendations for 19 medications were analyzed in 10 drug information resources. Each drug was reviewed in each resource and the published recommendations evaluated. Results: Medications and Mothers’ Milk 18th Edition and LactMed had the most medications listed as compatible with breastfeeding, with Lexicomp Online, Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation Online, and Epocrates following. LactMed stands out from the group with an average of 15.1 references per medication and number of references ranging from 0 to 58. Date ranges of references used by select resources varied. References to support recommendations ranged from 1979 to 2018 for the select resources. Conclusion and Relevance: Variation continues to exist across resources with regard to recommendations for medication safety in lactation. LactMed represents the most up-to-date and comprehensive review of literature in this review. When making decisions regarding medication use during lactation, health care professionals should consider reviewing data behind the recommendations and consulting multiple resources.

The research sample consisted of 102 persons working in four small projects, "Ceramics - Bamboo - Serma - Hand Carpets". They were selected in a pesky-purpose manner from the employees of these projects in Sakiet Abu Shaara village, Sentris, Menoufia Governorate and 10th of Ramadan City. "General data form", "Project Management Strategies scale", and "measure of satisfaction with life" were applied. The study followed the descriptive and analytical approach. The data were categorized and analyzed using appropriate statistical methods through the SPSS statistical program such as number and percentages, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, T-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, Chi-square and F-test. The most important results are related to the relationship between the project management strategy and the financial productivity and self-compliance at the level of significance of 0.01, which means that the realization of the requirements of the project in terms of finance and meet the needs, resulting in self-compatibility. There is also a correlation between the project management strategy and the business environment at the level of 0.01 meaning that whenever the project needs to be met in terms of funding and meet the needs of the project as this leads to compatibility with the place of residence of the project and the surrounding environment, there is an inverse correlation Between the social situation and the decision-making at the level of significance of 0.01, which means that the greater the number of employees are married the less ability to make the decisions needed in those small projects, which means the impact of the ability to make decisions on the social situation of the individual. Characteristics such as the difficulty of making specific planning and cost control, the existence of a large number of interdependencies among the projects that make up the enterprise, the need for significant speed of responses to decision making and the large number of stakeholders, contribute significantly to the construction scenario, being a challenge for any management methodology. This article presents part of the results of a survey carried out in vertical building companies in the city of João Pessoa-PB, whose objective was to investigate whether construction companies carry out the planning and cost control of their projects, whether there is compatibility between them and if they use compatibilization as an aid when taking decisions. 10 construction companies were examined, all of them were registered in Sinduscon-JP. The results indicate that all the companies carry out the planning and cost control of their projects, however, there is no compatibility amongthem and, consequently, they cannot be used by their managers in decision making.</p>

The object of the study is the system of training aviation specialists. The problem solved in the research is to increase the efficiency of decision making in the tasks of professional training of pilots while ensuring a given reliability, regardless of the hierarchy of the system of evaluation indicators. The subject of the research is the process of assessing the qualities of civil aviation pilots using fuzzy cognitive maps. The hypothesis of the research is to increase the number of indicators for assessing the quality of training of civil aviation pilots, with restrictions on the efficiency and reliability of decision making. The list of factors that influence the professional training of aviation personnel involved in ensuring flight safety is given. A mathematical model of professional training of aviation personnel involved in ensuring flight safety has been developed. This mathematical model differs from the previously known results: − the possibility of forming a generalized indicator of assessment and selection of decisions on the basis of changing sets of partial indicators, taking into account the complex multi-level structure of assessment of aviation personnel; − the ability to aggregate heterogeneous indicators (both quantitative and qualitative) to assess and select solutions that differ in measurement scales and value ranges; − taking into account compatibility and different values of partial indicators in the generalized assessment of decisions; − flexible adjustment (adaptation) of evaluation models when adding (removing) indicators and changing their parameters (compatibility and significance of indicators). According to the results of the analysis of the effectiveness of the proposed model, it can be seen that the proposed assessment model takes into account 30 % more assessment indicators than standardized ones

This article describes and investigates a model of strategic sequential decision making in networked policy-making environments with three agents. The primary interest is the effect of network structure on sequential policy making and information aggregation. The model and results illustrate how individual policy decisions of varying weight (in terms of a decision maker's unilateral effect on policy outcomes) can enable information aggregation in decentralized environments. In the studied environment, the incentive compatibility conditions for information aggregation are not invariant to network isomorphisms: individuals’ positions in the network matter. The study derives exact conditions for every acyclic network of three or fewer agents and illustrates the counterintuitive nature of comparative statics with respect to both network structure and individual agents’ policy preferences and discretionary authority.

This work presents a fuzzy TOPSIS model under group decisions for solving the facility location selection problem, where the ratings of various alternative locations under different subjective attributes and the importance weights of all attributes are assessed in linguistic values represented by fuzzy numbers. The objective attributed are transformed into dimensionless indices to ensure compatibility with the linguistic ratings of the subjective attributes. Furthermore, the membership function of the aggregation of the ratings and weights for each alternative location versus each attribute can be developed by interval arithmetic and α-cuts of fuzzy numbers. The ranking method of the mean of the integral values is applied to help derive the ideal and negative-ideal fuzzy solutions to complete the proposed fuzzy TOPSIS model. Finally, a numerical example demonstrates the computational process of the proposed model.

The article explores the potential and demonstrates the effectiveness of using some models and methods of ontological data analysis in the problem of structural analysis and synthesis of technical decisions. Morphological analysis and synthesis of layout diagrams of artifacts are considered as a working methodology for structural design. A set-theoretic model of the morphological decision space is constructed for the classical version of the methodology. The model in-cludes the functional subsystems of the designed artifact, implementation options for these subsystems, and potential technical decisions themselves. Moreover, in contrast to existing versions of such formalization, the emphasis is on the description of binary relationships between the entities of the knowledge domain of morphological analysis. It is pro-posed to describe the incompatibility of implementation options for a single functional subsystem of a designed arti-fact and the restricted compatibility of implementation options for various functional subsystems within the frame-work of a single model, known in ontological engineering and, in particular in ontological data analysis as “existence constraints”. Analysis of one of the regularities inherent in this model made it possible to strictly substantiate the ap-proach common in structural design to describing the restricted compatibility of implementation options for various functional subsystems in the form of prohibitions. The advantages of using existence constraints to describe the mor-phological decision space are shown, and the frame of a formal ontology for the knowledge domain of morphological analysis is constructed. The structural synthesis of a technical decision is compared with the method of semantic identi-fication of an object, developed within the framework of ontological data analysis for processing incomplete and in-consistent empirical information about the results of measuring object properties. A conclusion is made about the suit-ability of the latter for solving the problem of structural synthesis when correcting the concept of a “normal” subset of properties and information about the costs and/or benefits of including each individual implementation option for the functional subsystems of the designed artifact.

AbstractCross-sensory correspondences can reflect crosstalk between aligned conceptual feature dimensions, though uncertainty remains regarding the identities of all the dimensions involved. It is unclear, for example, if heaviness contributes to correspondences separately from size. Taking steps to dissociate variations in heaviness from variations in size, the question was asked if a heaviness-brightness correspondence will induce a congruity effect during the speeded brightness classification of simple visual stimuli. Participants classified the stimuli according to whether they were brighter or darker than the mid-gray background against which they appeared. They registered their speeded decisions by manipulating (e.g., tapping) the object they were holding in either their left or right hand (e.g., left for bright, right for dark). With these two otherwise identical objects contrasting in their weight, stimuli were classified more quickly when the relative heaviness of the object needing to be manipulated corresponded with the brightness of the stimulus being classified (e.g., the heavier object for a darker stimulus). This novel congruity effect, in the guise of a stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility effect, was induced when heaviness was isolated as an enduring feature of the object needing to be manipulated. It was also undiminished when participants completed a concurrent verbal memory load task, countering claims that the heaviness-brightness correspondence is verbally mediated. Heaviness, alongside size, appears to contribute to cross-sensory correspondences in its own right and in a manner confirming the far-reaching influence of correspondences, extending here to the fluency with which people communicate simple ideas by manipulating a hand-held object.

Decisions determining the use of land for energy are of exigent concern as land scarcity, the need for ecosystem services, and demands for energy generation have concomitantly increased globally. Utility-scale solar energy (USSE) [i.e., ≥1 megawatt (MW)] development requires large quantities of space and land; however, studies quantifying the effect of USSE on land cover change and protected areas are limited. We assessed siting impacts of >160 USSE installations by technology type [photovoltaic (PV) vs. concentrating solar power (CSP)], area (in square kilometers), and capacity (in MW) within the global solar hot spot of the state of California (United States). Additionally, we used the Carnegie Energy and Environmental Compatibility model, a multiple criteria model, to quantify each installation according to environmental and technical compatibility. Last, we evaluated installations according to their proximity to protected areas, including inventoried roadless areas, endangered and threatened species habitat, and federally protected areas. We found the plurality of USSE (6,995 MW) in California is sited in shrublands and scrublands, comprising 375 km2 of land cover change. Twenty-eight percent of USSE installations are located in croplands and pastures, comprising 155 km2 of change. Less than 15% of USSE installations are sited in “Compatible” areas. The majority of “Incompatible” USSE power plants are sited far from existing transmission infrastructure, and all USSE installations average at most 7 and 5 km from protected areas, for PV and CSP, respectively. Where energy, food, and conservation goals intersect, environmental compatibility can be achieved when resource opportunities, constraints, and trade-offs are integrated into siting decisions.

Results indicated that although teachers were aware of the benefits of ICT to promote students’ learning they do not integrate ICT as a learning tool in their regular, everyday teaching practices. Primary factors determining the use of ICT in classroom practice relate to facilitating conditions in the schools and teachers’ self-efficacy. On the other hand, perceived usefulness of ICT, perceived ease of use, compatibility and normative beliefs seem to have minor impact on teachers’ actual usage of ICT in classroom settings.

The article is devoted to the solution of the actual scientific and applied problem issue - the search for organizational and technological solutions for biosferous construction on the example of marine and river coastal areas engineering protection in Ukraine. The main causes of imperfect activities in the field of coastal areas protection are: insufficient considering natural processes laws in the coastal zone of sea, reservoirs and rivers during the formation of design decisions; work incompleteness andcoastal protection and coastal regulating structures formation incompleteness in local complexes that fully cover coastal natural systems where there is a high level of natural processes interconnections that do not ensure their project effectiveness. It was substantiated that objective of shores engineering protection ecosystems increasing objective reliability is the most rational damaging construction of the gabions.

Explicit rationing decisions are being made to encompass a wide range of health care issues. Voluntary euthanasia has largely been excluded from this debate due to, in my view, the emotive nature of the issue. Euthanasia is an issue in which economists have been largely excluded and in which ethicists and philosophers dominate. It is the purpose of this paper to review the economic and ethical literature on euthanasia and to discuss their compatibility within the debate on euthanasia. The potential cost savings by the use of advance directives, do-not-resuscitate orders, and futile care withdrawal are then reviewed, as are the potential cost savings created by hospice care. As a conclusion, the ethical and economic arguments are then balanced to assess their compatibility. It is the contention of this paper that reducing medical care costs near the end of life should not be a taboo subject, and that rationing decisions could focus on an exploration of this area and the approaches to it, which are ethically justifiable and economically worthwhile. The introduction of a policy of voluntary euthanasia could have a large impact on the rationing of health care resources whilst also promoting patient choice and an arena for a more dignified death.
