In the modern rapidly evolving society, the science and the business are facing new needs and challenges constantly. The insurance industry and its mathematical foundation, the actuarial science, are not exceptions. Currently, the greatest challenge that the insurance system has to cope with is the issue of the new international financial standard that affects the calculation of reserves among other things. So far, insurers have mainly used common classical deterministic methods. However, the new standard emphasizes the necessity of the realistic prognosis that is best achieved with stochastic modelling tools since deterministic models do not represent the uncertainty and the random nature of future possible losses. This article considers the advantage of using stochastic modelling for reserve calculation in comparison to the deterministic approach. The article consists of five sections. In the first section, we briefly present the technique that lies in the basis of technical reserves calculation. The second section is devoted to such deterministic methods of reserve calculation as the Bornhuetter-Ferguson method and the chain-ladder method. In the third section, we consider modifications of two stochastic models – the Mack method and the bootstrapping technique. The fourth section considers the adjustment of reserves for the time value of money and inflation. In the fifth section, the results of modelling in the programming language R are presented.

Purpose In the process industries, it is essential to have a well-articulated manufacturing strategy within companies. However, to facilitate manufacturing strategy development, it is important to start with a good characterisation of the material transformation system and company production capabilities. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach A grounded theory approach, with inspiration from configuration modelling, attempted to characterize the material transformation system as a set of variables. The variable development was based on a literature review and the knowledge base of five industry experts. Two exploratory mini-case studies were carried out, primarily to illustrate the use of the model, but additionally to test its industrial usability. Findings A set of 31 variables was developed, and related measures and scales were tentatively defined. Two mini-cases supported the usability of the model. The model, focussing on company generic process capabilities, is a conceptual taxonomy and the study’s theoretical contribution. Research limitations/implications The lucidity of the definitions and scales for the variables are open to further refinement, and the limited discussions of variable relationships in this study are addressed in an agenda for further research. Practical implications The model can be deployed as a facilitative instrument in the analysis of company material transformation systems and may serve as a platform in further discussions on companies’ strategy development. Originality/value The model is a new instrument for analysing company generic process capabilities and an effort to build new theory rather than to test an existing one.

One of the most important criteria to consider while analysing the MTO company’s ability to make a profit in a competitive market is earning power. Specifically, this is defined by the Earning Power criterion. This means that the Earning Power modelling is a solid strategy for selecting and assessing which orders will bring profit to companies. As a result, a company manager must provide a model that can interact with the economic environment to make an offer and a price quotation to ensure the competitiveness of the company. In this article, we analyse this criterion for the processing operation.

The current stage of development of a public joint-stock company «National Joint-Stock Company «Naftogaz of Ukraine» is characterized by an increase of negative trends. The main retaining factors for the enterprise development are the complex economic and political situation in the country, the negative dynamics of the main macroeconomic indicators, the high cost of the UAH resource, and the dominant devaluation processes. One of the conditions for a stable fi nancial and economic development of the industrial enterprises is the proper management of the movement of their fi nancial resources. Consequently, in the case of consideration of the enterprise, it is necessary to proceed from the fact that the key role is played by continuous fi nancial processes, which should be understood as the sequence of tasks or procedures that collectively provide the completion of a particular production activity. The formation of a market fi nancial and credit system requires enterprises to increase the effi ciency of activities, competitiveness of petroleum products and services based on the implementation of scientifi c and technological progress, eff ective forms of management and management of the enterprise.

Under the authority of the Millar Western Forest Products Ltd. (MWFP) Forest Management Agreement, the company has the right to harvest trees, grow trees, manage the forest and plan activities that assure forest productivity and industry profitability without jeopardizing the quality of the environment. Thus, as part of obtaining provincial government approval, the company has to submit a Detailed Forest Management Plan that includes a comprehensive assessment of the environmental implications of forestry operations and the mitigation of impacts. Forest management planning for environmental sustainability will become more and more difficult with increased land use pressures from other industries, agriculture and recreation. Therefore, the planning process will require increasingly more sophisticated modelling tools to identify and avoid significant impacts. The Forest Watershed and Riparian Disturbance (FORWARD) project proposes a hybrid modelling tool that relies on inexpensive remote sensing data, with few ground truthing requirements, to model streamflow, suspended solids and nutrients in streams on the Boreal Plain. Incorporating modelling tools into the MWFP planning process provides MWFP additional strategies to operate in an environmentally sensitive manner. Thus, the company can maintain an allowable cut, while ensuring that ecological and physical values are considered. 1.1 The traditional approach to examining the financial status of a company is to look at the balance sheet and the profit and loss account. Such information is usually publicly available, it is certified by the auditors as having been drawn up according to relevant accounting standards and it is generally presumed to communicate reliable information.1.2 In the case of a manufacturing or trading company the profit and loss account records purchases and sales and the balance sheet will include a valuation of stock in hand, since it is anticipated that this will give rise to future sales income. Working capital is required because products have to be manufactured or purchased before they can be sold. Profit is realized when the product is sold for more than it cost to buy it or to make it.

This paper presents a method for assortment–quantity production scheduling in a printing company. The company uses specialized machinery to make prints on clothing. The method is based on a study of the company’s practical operations and the production technologies used. It involves the construction of simulation and optimization models of the process. The simulation models reflect the technical aspects of the production process and the business requirements. Optimization models provide solutions that balance product sales revenue with appropriate production schedules. On this basis, managers can make resource-balanced decisions on the implementation of selected production plans, taking into account the current economic conditions of the company. The experiments used the FlexSim simulation program (by FlexSim Software Products, Inc., Orem, UT 84097 USA; v. 20.1.3.1) and the OptQuest optimization package (embedded in FlexSim), resulting in a cost-effective solution in a short time. The proposed method, thanks to the optimization of the production program, provides savings in the use of materials for production, as well as water and energy savings in the production process. Thanks to the possibility of analyzing the process without interfering with it, provided by simulation modelling, the method practically eliminates the costs and time needed to prepare the execution of new production orders. This contributes to the sustainable development of the company and provides an opportunity to assess the impact of potential business decisions in the company prior to their implementation. The method has been directly applied in a company to improve its performance. The method is scalable and can be applied to problems of varying complexity and production systems of different types and sizes. This is especially true for small- and medium-sized companies that use discrete manufacturing in the textile, metal, and furniture industries.

The authors have developed a model of forming a database for assessing economic security of retail companies using mathematical modelling in order to avoid difficulties in the process of forming the database. Application of mathematical methods enables to create the more informative database, which will be used to conduct a more thorough analysis. This allows to make effective managerial decisions regarding ensuring a high level of economic security of a retail company. A methodical tool of M. Pohozhykh and M. Safronova underlies the model of forming the database for assessing economic security of a retail company applying methods of mathematical modelling. The methodical tool consists in modelling an n-dimensional geometric shape, namely a n- dimensional parallelepiped, taking into account properties of the Euclidean space. The model of forming the database for conducting an assessment is an outcome of the scientific research.

If this occurs, the company will suffer from a lack of trust, which will harm the company's reputation. Thus, to monitor uncontrolled issues, a company wants to know what topics or opinions are developing in the community. Therefore, the topic modelling using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) is proposed to identify topics that are being discussed on social media. Research background: Managerial scientists use a lot of modelling techniques for business processes. In this paper we are focused on agent-based modelling and simulations, which emerged in the last two decades as a new approach. Autonomous and interacting intelligent agents are able to model and simulate complex systems in the business sphere. With the use of agent-based modelling and simulations we are able to understand how macro level outcomes are affected by micro level processes and vice versa.Purpose of the article: The purpose of the paper is to introduce recent development in the area of agent-based modelling and simulations focused on the business domain. Managers often have to make difficult decisions under the uncertainty and high risks. Agent-based modelling can provide powerful tools for lowering those risks through a possibility of running experiments, which is normally impossible in economics. In the second part we want to support the usefulness of agent-based simulations with our own simulations. Methods: The method used in this article is an agent-based simulation in a multi-agent system. We use a framework called MAREA. It is a simulation environment with integrated ERP system based on REA ontology. Our simulation model is based on a retail company that sells electronics. For simplicity, in our setup we trade with computer cables.Findings & Value added: In our simulations we experimented with the quality of sales service provided by company’s sales representatives. We investigated the impact of quality of sales service on company KPIs under the changing environment circumstances represented by disturbance agent. The quality of sales service is a part of quality of service and thus it affects the perception of brand and loyalty of customers towards the company. In our simulation setup we work with two types of customers, long-term customers and new ones. The result is that quality of sales service has mostly positive effects on company KPIs.

Models in behavioural relationship marketing suggest that relations between the customer and the company change over time as a result of the continuous encounter. Some theoretical models have been put forward concerning relationship marketing, both from the standpoints of consumer behaviour and empirical modelling. In addition to these, this study proposes the hidden Markov model (HMM) as a potential tool for assessing customer relationships. Specifically, the HMM is submitted via the framework of a Markov chain model to classify customers relationship dynamics of a telecommunication service company by using an experimental data set. We develop and estimate an HMM to relate the unobservable relationship states to the observed buying behaviour of the customers giving an appropriate classification of the customers into the relationship states. By merely accounting for the functional and unobserved heterogeneity with a two-state hidden Markov model and taking estimation into account via an optimal estimation method, the empirical results not only demonstrate the value of the proposed model in assessing the dynamics of a customer relationship over time but also gives the optimal marketing-mixed strategies in different customer state.

To attain the paper’s goal, this study is carried out in the following logical sequence: 1) Analysing the multifaceted role of ERP systems in modern business frameworks, including their capacity to manage stakeholder conflicts and mitigate environmental risks. 2) Empirically testing the hypothesis through a sophisticated partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) model, highlighting the mediating role of stakeholder influence on environmentally oriented activities. The application of structural modelling tools and PLS-SEM techniques has revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between ERP management system efficiency and company profitability (impact strength = 0.497). Since all indicators of’stakeholder influence intensity on environmentally oriented company activities’ have a statistically significant influence at the 1% level, the establishment of goals for environmentally oriented company development and the corresponding ERP management system should consider the interests of all company stakeholders. The research results can be helpful for policymakers and businesses seeking to promote ERP adoption for environmental sustainability, enhance transparency, and achieve a synergistic effect between environmental objectives and profitability.

In order to investigate the relations between qualified foreign institutional investors (QFII) holdings and the performance of the A-share listed companies and effectively distinguish between QFIIs’ ability to identify value companies and their ability to enhance company value, this paper empirically examines the relations between QFII holdings and company performance using Chinese annual report data from 2010 to 2012. The results show that QFIIs have strong ability in identifying value companies. However, the effect of QFII holdings on company performance improvement is mainly manifested in the short term, and the long-term effect is insignificant. In the long run, QFIIs may not be considered as “value boosters,” implying that it is unlikely for QFIIs to greatly enhance company value and help the invested companies to improve the level of governance and their long-term performance.

The aim of this research is to provide a unified modelling-based method to help with the evaluation of organization design and change decisions. Relevant literature regarding model-driven organization design and change is described. This helps identify the requirements for a new modelling methodology. Such a methodology is developed and described. The three phases of the developed method include the following. First, the use of CIMOSA-based multi-perspective enterprise modelling to understand and capture the most enduring characteristics of process-oriented organizations and externalize various types of requirement knowledge about any target organization. Second, the use of causal loop diagrams to identify dynamic causal impacts and effects related to the issues and constraints on the organization under study. Third, the use of simulation modelling to quantify the effects of each issue in terms of organizational performance. The design and case study application of a unified modelling method based on CIMOSA (computer integrated manufacturing open systems architecture) enterprise modelling, causal loop diagrams, and simulation modelling, is explored to illustrate its potential to support systematic organization design and change. Further application of the proposed methodology in various company and industry sectors, especially in manufacturing sectors, would be helpful to illustrate complementary uses and relative benefits and drawbacks of the methodology in different types of organization. The proposed unified modelling-based method provides a systematic way of enabling key aspects of organization design and change. The case company, its relevant data, and developed models help to explore and validate the proposed method. The application of CIMOSA-based unified modelling method and integrated application of these three modelling techniques within a single solution space constitutes an advance on previous best practice. Also, the purpose and application domain of the proposed method offers an addition to knowledge.

Most of the fast-moving consumer goods companies (FMCG) have two main targets in order to become successful on the market. First, it is profit maximization and the second one is cost optimization or minimization. If the company can hold those two key performance indicator (KPIs) in balance, it has all the odds to be competitive and successful in the field of operation. Supply Chain (SC) team and in particular Demand planning (DP) plays a crucial role in achieving those targets mentioned above with help of recommendation modelling systems. Demand planning team are those who can translate business needs into meaningful and measurable numbers for Supply Chain keeping healthy inventory level and delivering the goods that needed with the best freshness and availability possible. Further, we will describe and analyze how to achieve better results vs. current solutions on specific company called PepsiCo via modelling and analyzing Demand Planning in FMCG sector overall.

We aim to provide a conceptual model of innovation culture in organizations and build a survey tool to measure it. Innovation management focuses often on formalized processes whereas unwritten rules related to organizational culture are also a major factor for innovation and firms’ performance. We first position the role of culture with regard to innovation processes, then provide a model of innovation culture relying on five branches (External links, Teams, Organizational context, Individuals, and Leaders). Following the elaboration of this model called ETOILe, we address the issue of measuring it. In this paper, we focus on the less-known components such as External Links and design an ad hoc questionnaire. The validation study is performed through a laboratory test with 115 professional participants followed by reliability analysis of data and principal components analysis. The results of the study enabled us to refine the diagnosis tool as well as the underlying model of innovation culture. The current version includes four branches (Team, Organization, Individuals, Leaders) and ten sub-dimensions including promotion and prevention regulatory focus, managerial practices, discovery and delivery skills, etc. Because of its implicitness and intangibility, culture is often disregarded in the analysis of key ingredients of firms’ performance. Our model of innovation culture gathering such unwritten rules contributes to understanding why innovation is so natural and efficient in some companies, and why it is sometimes painful, despite robust managerial structure and methodological processes. Finally, we provide a diagnosis tool intended for all hierarchical levels of the organization, and not only for managerial staff. Our model and tool could be used at several levels: at the company’s level to grasp the overall cultural profile, at the department or team level to assess differences in innovation culture between subdivisions in a given company, and at a trans-company level to characterize cultural differences associated to business sectors (e.g., manufacturing sector, consulting sector, retail sector).

Our aim is to present a method for estimating incurred but not reported (IBNR) claim reserves. Each claim is described by threecharacteristics: the claim size, the allocated loss adjusted expense and the development time. We concentrate on the joint study of all three random variables. First, the marginal univariate distributions are estimated using families of lognormal, Pareto, Wald and Gamma distributions. Next, the matrix of dependence characteristics is found between the three variables and then different multivariate copulas are used to model the joint distribution. The obtained models are fitted to the real data of motor liability insurance of a Latvian insurance company. By simulation the average claim size and allocated loss adjustment expenses in each development day have been estimated. Finally, outstanding claim reserve has been estimated.

The traditional theory of occupational safety has played an important role in promoting the development of occupational safety. Its use effectively reduced the number of casualties and saved thousands of lives. However, it turned out that the "margin effect" has become more and more obvious. World statistics show that the number of accidents at the workplace has dropped to a certain level and can no longer be reduced to zero. This means that it is necessary to search for new methods in theory that would help reduce the number of accidents. A review of recent articles in this field shows us new trends in the development of safety and safety at work. The Chinese study looked at the benefits of the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) in the construction industry. Safety-Related Data (SRDs) are important factors for making Safety Decision-Making (SDM) in a company. A systematic approach to risk assessment in the field of occupational safety and health is linked to a new process for identifying risk factors together with weighing the influence of these risk factors. For the weight of the factors in adverse events, a multi-criteria model is used to analyze the analytical hierarchy. Using appropriate Big Data processing, we can achieve more efficient forecasting of crisis events that lead to accidents at work.
