Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the development of a new perspective on adaptive strategy design. It examines the concept of adaptive advantage, as such a new perspective, and seeks to improve its understanding and application. The study of its origins leads to a solid comprehension of the concept and the proposal of a certain company profile. This could serve as a foundation for further research and as benchmark for companies trying to be more responsive to change and ultimately more resilient. Design/methodology/approach Three theories of the area of adaptability, namely, organization ecology, corporate demography and complexity-based thinking, have been studied conducting a review of the relevant literature of each one. After drawing out the individual contributions, a definition of adaptive advantage is offered and the question about its implementation in an organization is posed. Consequently, indicators of the three elements impacting adaptability, innovation culture, decision-making style and accumulated experience are measured in a sample of “old” and innovative firms. In order to do so, three questionnaires have been used, resulting in a case description of an archetype of adaptive companies. Findings It is shown that the expected elements are present, but in a lesser degree than expected. In conclusion, the trial study shows a pattern of “old,” innovative firms, whose cultures promote innovation, are analytic and adaptive in their decision making and have relatively high levels of accumulated experience. Originality/value This general review improves the comprehension of a complex concept currently under debate in the field of strategic planning. It explains the areas of the firm implicated in the achievement of adaptive advantage and tries to clarify a practical application of the concept.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the consistency of the methods of Annicchiarico, Lin & Binns, Wricke, and factor analysis in identifying eucalyptus clones with stability, adaptability, and high productive potential. Eight-four clones, with three years of age, from the genetic breeding program of the company CMPC Celulose Riograndense were used. Three field experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, in an 84x3 factorial arragement, with 20 replicates of one plant per plot. The clones were evaluated as to diameter at breast height, plant height, and volume of wood. The methods of Annicchiarico and Lin & Binns are highly correlated with each other, and their use together with the method of Wricke is a sound strategy for the evaluation of eucalyptus clones. The factor analysis identified broadly adaptable clones, and some of them were the same ones identified by the methods of Annicchiarico and Lin & Binns. The use of the mean classification of the clones, along with the factor analysis, is efficient to identify the most adapted, stable, and productive ones among a high number of genotypes.

Abstract This article examines a China-Hong Kong co-produced film adaptation, SoulMate, within sociocultural, industrial, and organizational contexts. It argues that, first, the film adaptation’s authors are not limited to the agents who adapt the source material. The production company explores and exploits a variety of authors, including extrinsic names to the work, as symbolic resources to serve the discourse surrounding the film; and the adaptation status makes a special contribution to that process by multiplying authors and by generating cross-references. Second, film adaptation has a specific and significant bearing on the adaptability of production houses that encounter changing sociocultural and industrial environments. This article hopefully broadens the understanding of film adaptation in alternative historical periods and industrial contexts other than Hollywood with a simultaneous effort to propose new approaches to the study of Chinese-language film adaptation. It also attempts to expand the discourse of authorship in film adaptation studies and in film studies more generally by identifying filmmaking entities, in addition to directors, producers, and writers, as adaptive co-authors and non-conflicting stakeholders in the business of film adaptation.

Objectives. We focus on identifying the specifics of the analyzed systems and determining the direction of their development. Methods. The study employs general scientific methods. The specifics of efficiency measurement systems are described and compared by a single set of parameters (the composition of stakeholders, whose interests are taken into account, practical applicability, dynamic adaptability, the presence of links between strategy and technological operations, innovation, etc.). Results. We analyzed the said efficiency measurement systems, described their strengths and aspects that need to be developed in further research. The findings can be used to create a system to measure the performance of Russian manufacturing and trading companies that produce goods for individual consumers. Conclusions. The systems like SMART, BSC, IDPMS, PPS and DMP are significant developments that help companies achieve their goals. These systems are universal. They serve as a methodological framework for creating a particular system for measuring a company's performance, taking into account its industry-specific requirements. These systems enable to solve some economic and management problems, but do not allow, for example, to determine the optimal business model of the company. It is appropriate to develop efficiency measurement systems by incorporating the value-based management principles.

Purpose This study provided a unique opportunity to analyze five generations of a small but continually evolving family-owned media organization with multiple media outlets operating across delivery platforms. The purpose of this paper is to identify variables that contributed to entrepreneurship and sustainability, holding the family business intact for more than 100 years. Design/methodology/approach This study used organizational ecology in a qualitative case study to interview entrepreneurs from three of five generations. Additionally, current employees, family and friends, along with letters, cards, published articles and financial data were included in the analysis. Entrepreneurial themes based on organizational ecology were identified including variation, selection, retention, as well as values, innovation, service and adaptability. Findings The company in this study began with the purchase of newspapers and start-up of a news service in 1904. By the third generation, entrepreneurial initiatives included additional newspapers, as well as a television start-up. In the fourth and fifth generations, the company evolved into what the family termed a “media development company” with a mix of revenue platforms including electronic newspapers, websites, radio stations, live events and syndicated programs. Research limitations/implications Limitations included sample size and focus on the perspectives of family members. More research is needed to identify the struggles within the family media firm and the more troubling aspects of a family company as indicated in the literature and their possible downside to both employees and family members who work for the short term or long haul in smaller, family-owned companies. Practical implications Sustainability of family-owned media organizations occurred through a balance of entrepreneurial activities and family values. Revenue flows resulted from adapting business models from selling advertising in local newspapers to providing funding and other support to local businesses gaining footholds. Market innovation, risk and community-minded solutions resulted in survival through stages of variation, selection and retention. Social implications For family media companies to thrive, entrepreneurship and adaptability are key. Significant contributions to theory from this study indicated organizational ecology is a useful tool in analyzing the evolution of a media company through stages of variation, selection and retention. After almost 80 years of operation in the retention stage, the company started over in the variation stage with new products including radio, internet, live events and community business ventures. Timely diversification was key as media and community landscapes changed. Originality/value Unique findings indicated sustainability came through a family-oriented approach to business that carried on throughout generations: a long-term view with a commitment to family values, the promotion of entrepreneurial opportunities for family and non-family members and an external focus as media development companies on the success of local businesses and communities in which they operated.

Design/methodology/approach By means of structural equation modeling with latent variables, a new type of synthetic index is developed, with which the evolution and incidence of human capital structure, human resources development, and R&D in the company’s accumulated resiliency can be tested. Findings The results indicate a remarkable contribution of human capital to company resilience (standardized path coefficient 0.8365; p<0.0001 and R2=0.7486). Differences in company-nurtured resilience are related to categories such as productivity, products diversification, human capital structure, human resources management, innovation results, technology, and a productive environment. Research limitations/implications The main limitation is that the applied literature on this topic is scarce in economics and focused on company survival. Practical implications Management for resilience requires the development of the ability to balance efficiency in the short term with adaptability in the medium and long term. Findings If you are not so sure if freelance talent could be game changing for your company, consider that experimentation is a key element of staying nimble. Companies tend to layoff staff, pause raises and scale back the office lease as initial reactions to reduce costs and stay lean. But the ones that do it the best go the extra mile. It is not just about cutting costs – rather, it is about doubling down on new (and old) ways to achieve peak performance in the face of uncertainty. Using freelancers can do just that. This study explores the significance of integration and flexibility as critical determinants of business performance by examining the connection amongst supply chain integration and flexibility on the one hand and business performance on the other. Using mainly a cross-sectional approach, structured questionnaire was used to collect responses from two hundred and fifty-five employees drawn registered companies in the Kumasi Metropolis and analyzed with the help of Pearson’s correlation and structural equation modeling (SEM). Three elements of supply chain integration (company integration with suppliers, cross functional integration within a company and company integration with customers) and three elements of supply chain flexibility (adaptability, alignment and agility) were subjected to analysis. The results indicate that supply chain integration and supply chain flexibility exhibit significant correlation with firm performance. Supply chain integration and supply chain flexibility have high correlation with ‘financial performance’ followed by ‘logistic performance’ and then ‘operational performance’. Also, the results demonstrate that four supply chain integration surrogates; ‘production data integration’, ‘going after customers for feedback’, ‘periodic connection with customers’ and ‘real time search of inventory’ and two supply chain flexibility proxies specifically ‘technology’ and ‘supply network strategies’ are crucial as they exhibit the most noteworthy influence on firm performance. Results of this study offer remarkable demonstrations of the effects of integration and flexibility in enhancing performance of businesses and greater attention must be paid to those proxies of supply chain integration and flexibility that exhibited the most significant impact on firm’s performance.

In view of the dynamic dispersion of e-commerce logistics demand, this paper uses the historical distribution data of logistics companies to study data-driven proactive vehicle routing optimization. First, based on the classic 2E-VRP problem, a single-node/multistage 2E-VRP mathematical model is constructed. Then, a framework for solving the proactive vehicle routing optimization problem is proposed in combination with the characteristics of the proposed model, including four modules: data-driven demand forecasting methods, customer clustering methods, proactive demand quotas and replenishment strategies, and vehicle routing optimization procedure. The significant feature of the proposed solution framework is that the response to dynamic customers is proactive rather than passive. The solution is applied to the distribution practice of a large logistics company in Chongqing. The results show that the proposed method has better dynamic scene adaptability and customer response capabilities in traffic limit.

The paper seeks to review and substantiate specific indicators for company economic sustainability, in particular, process migration by essential indicators, adaptability of sustainability indicators mix and their drivers that affect the estimation of the degree of company economic sustainability. In the framework of functional and systemic approaches, insights on ensuring economic and financial sustainability are provided from both theoretical and practical perspectives to be used further in managerial decision making. To measure economic sustainability as the key assumptions for building the company’s economic security capacity, relevant internal and external processes have been identified which cover manufacturing, financial and labour processes, organizational behavior, competitiveness and performance efficiency that involve identification of the key elements; the selection of long-term investment and financial strategies as well as defining working capital policies and strategies for cash flow allocation; creating respective financial forecasts; building a budget strategy integrating the company's strategic goals with its functional areas (information statistics and accounting, manufacturing, marketing, personnel management, but first and foremost, with finance which is an integrative link between other areas), the implementation of a financial control system which incorporates a budget forecast into the framework of balanced scorecard indicators, thus helping to verify whether certain policies and decisions made in different structural units of the company contribute to achieving the targeted financial goals. An overall systemic competitiveness concept has been suggested which relies on consistent integration with the external environment, thus challenging not only the internal economic transformations but also triggers the transformation of economic sustainability. For a great majority of companies that seek to enhance their economic security potential, the primary objectives and priorities are to overcome internal fragmentation and to improve links between suppliers and customers, and above all increase the ability to promptly and effectively respond to demands for boosting the level of economic security potential. Based on the above, the paper offers a well-reasoned conceptual approach to identification of company economic sustainability in the framework of its economic security potential.
