Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the development of a new perspective on adaptive strategy design. It examines the concept of adaptive advantage, as such a new perspective, and seeks to improve its understanding and application. The study of its origins leads to a solid comprehension of the concept and the proposal of a certain company profile. This could serve as a foundation for further research and as benchmark for companies trying to be more responsive to change and ultimately more resilient. Design/methodology/approach Three theories of the area of adaptability, namely, organization ecology, corporate demography and complexity-based thinking, have been studied conducting a review of the relevant literature of each one. After drawing out the individual contributions, a definition of adaptive advantage is offered and the question about its implementation in an organization is posed. Consequently, indicators of the three elements impacting adaptability, innovation culture, decision-making style and accumulated experience are measured in a sample of “old” and innovative firms. In order to do so, three questionnaires have been used, resulting in a case description of an archetype of adaptive companies. Findings It is shown that the expected elements are present, but in a lesser degree than expected. In conclusion, the trial study shows a pattern of “old,” innovative firms, whose cultures promote innovation, are analytic and adaptive in their decision making and have relatively high levels of accumulated experience. Originality/value This general review improves the comprehension of a complex concept currently under debate in the field of strategic planning. It explains the areas of the firm implicated in the achievement of adaptive advantage and tries to clarify a practical application of the concept.

Design/methodology/approach Two-wave data were collected from 306 employees working in the operation department of an e-commerce company in Eastern China. Findings The results showed that both affective commitment and emotional exhaustion mediated the relationship between career adaptability and both citizenship behavior and citizenship fatigue, revealing a dual-process mechanism. Moreover, both the positive association between career adaptability and affective commitment and the negative association between career adaptability and emotional exhaustion were stronger among employees with a high (vs low) level of hindrance stressors. Research limitations/implications This study sheds light on the mechanisms and boundary conditions of the career adaptabilities–citizenship outcomes relationship. Originality/value This is one of the first studies to investigate the mechanism of the relationship between career adaptability and citizenship outcomes using multi-wave data.

This document investigates the relationship between the usage of relational forms of governance and the completeness of contractual documents. It further examines howthis relationship is presided by the development of social norms between contracting parties. A case study was conducted within Company X, a top European company in the Energy Sector, where interviews to managers and contractual documents were inspected for aqualitative analysis of the aforementioned relationship. The results indicate that the employment of relational governance mechanisms does affect contractual completeness on one of its two dimensions: contingency adaptability. This aspect is enhanced as relational norms are interwoven in the exchange agreement. A clear connection with the second dimension, term specificity, could not be identified, and is instead attributed to contextual idiosyncrasies such as industry type andgovernance structure design. A theoretical model depicting this phenomenon was developed, including mediating effects by situational variables.

Annotation:
A debate on public goods is urgently needed in health care. Care must be recognized as a social function, as an occupation and, at the same time, as a human right—which imposes binding obligations to comply with precise standards of quality, quantity, suitability, adaptability, and accessibility, among others. It is a complex and invisible task, that may be done as part of a medical treatment, post-surgical recovery process, or permanent support in cases of chronic illness, disability, or mental health conditions. And it tends to be provided mainly in the home, by women, without remuneration. In Latin America, care has not been included in a coordinated and specific public health policy agenda but has been advanced through isolated actions—in many cases highly fragmented and heterogeneous—without a clear awareness of the public nature of care and the associated responsibility of the State. Accordingly, this document takes a gender and rights-based approach. It starts with an analysis of the main definitions of unpaid work in the health sector, and then focuses on initiatives in three Latin American countries (Colombia, Costa Rica, and Uruguay) with regard to measurement, valuation, integration, and recognition in national health systems or policies, in care models, and in time-use surveys. The conclusions propose recommendations aimed at addressing unpaid care as an essential element of social policies in general, and health policies in particular, from a gender and rights-based perspective.

This chapter examines the interplay of the fundamental constructs of perceived organizational resilience and organizational ambidexterity by providing insights from a case study of an integrated service company in the tourism and leisure industry located in the Swiss Alps. The authors theorize that organizational ambidexterity (i.e., the balance between adaptability and alignment) leads to higher levels of resilience by boosting the capability of the firm to mitigate and adapt to major disruptions in its environment. Data from a survey with non-family employees show that establishing structures of alignment and adaptability and imprinting an “and/or”-mindset into the company culture has enabled all employees to constantly navigate new challenges while staying aligned on priorities throughout the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the positive effects of alignment and adaptability can only unfold if they are combined with clear communication and transparency by the company's leadership.

The implementation includes the integration of data and legacy systems from independent business units and the construction of a uniform Web-based customer interface. We followed the early process of architecture analysis and definition over a year. The research focuses on the creation of e-business architecture and observes that instead of guided by a prescribed method, the architecture emerges through somewhat non-deliberate actions obliged by the situation and its constraints, conflicts, compromises, and political decisions. The interview-based qualitative data is analyzed using grounded theory and a coherent story explaining the situation and its forces is extracted. The company can choose two ways: keep its status quo, without going forward or backward, or to act on the opportunities that appear in the market. The reality consists of opportunities that the entrepreneur faces, and also, there are barriers, limitations, and disappointments that arise. Still, if they use innovative solutions, they gain a competitive advantage. In the modern world, the necessary resource is knowledge, which allows entrepreneurs to improve the position of the company in the market. The local exchange telephone market is no longer considered to be a natural monopoly as a result of technological advancements. In particular, the power, versatility, and adaptability of digital technology has enabled traditional telecommunications companies to transition their network architecture from one based on copper wires and circuit switches dedicated to the provision of high quality transmission of point-to-point voice signals to a multi-faceted, general network based on fiber optic cables and packet switches capable of providing an array of voice, data, and video services. A network layers model is introduced to conceptualize the process of convergence to the Internet model. Convergence is fundamentally changing the nature of what it means to be a telecommunications company and promises to alter the market structure of many voice, data, and video markets. Convergence has pitted wireline telecommunications companies in a fierce rivalry with cable companies for voice, data, and, increasingly, video services. More generally, this research provides a framework to explain the convergence of communications networks and identifies and analyzes key issues that confront public policymakers. One key competition issue, termed network neutrality, addresses the concern that the evolving broadband network architecture will enable network providers to favor the provider’s services or affiliated services at the expense of independent rivals.

Taking into account cost and safety for pipelines transporting oil and natural gas, the strength of the steel used is getting higher and the plate wall thicker. After a good use of X70 steel in China’s East-to-West Gas Transmission Project, X80 steel is drawing more and more attention in the future pipelines, resulting in its successful production in Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Company, and also bringing some concerns about welding. With increasing the wall thickness of the pipeline, the welding heat input is expected to increase for an increased deposited rate and a quality weld configuration. However, it is likely for the thermo-mechanically controlled rolled fine-grained steel that the properties of the heat affected zone will get deteriorated after it is subjected to large weld heat inputs, so the influence of the weld linear energy on the weld configuration and the properties of the welded joint have been studied. It is evident that an increased weld heat input can significantly reduce the number of the welding runs, thereby increasing the production proficiency and favoring the welding quality control as well. Furthermore, for Ti, Nb micro alloyed X80 steel, almost no property deterioration was found in this experiment, indicating that X80 steel is adaptable to various welding heat inputs, which gives much possibility of selecting a desirable large heat input. X80 steel is characteristic of low carbon and low sulphur contents with the addition of Mn, Mo alloying elements, and correspondingly, its weld metal should have the similar features that need to be obtained with the welding materials. However, the welding wires for X80 steel aren’t currently and commercially available in domestic market, so developing new welding wires is an urgent task for the mass application of X80 steel. Two submerged arc welding wires, one used for X70 steel and the other one branded as WGX2 with a higher strength were used in this welding experiment on X80 steel. The former produced excellent average impact energy up to 172J at −20°C close to that of the base metal but practically under-matched strengths and unqualified bend properties. The welded joint produced with WGX2 wire practically has a little over-matched strengths, qualified bend properties and satisfactory impact energy as well.

Resilience is understood as the capacity of rural systems to transform and adapt, and this is key to achieving sustainable rural development. The aim of the research is to study resilience from a cooperative framework based on four concepts: persistence, adaptability, transformation capacity, and learning, and to collect successful strategies that encourage resilience. The research is part of a project called Rethink funded by the European Commission and state agencies of 14 European countries, included in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and the ERA-NET RURAGRI. The methodology is structured based on a common analytical framework that holds the four concepts of resilience applied to each of the key stakeholders (cooperative, public sector, private sector and civil society). The case study analyzed is a cooperative that has more than 25 years’ experience in agriculture during which it has demonstrated its capacity for renewal and recovery through its working model. The analysis covers the entire process of the cooperative, from previous experience of farmers, the creation of the company in 2007 to its current projects, focusing not only on market strategies, but also on its strategic vision and research investment, and on values such as trust and respect, on which the cooperative is based.

The economic, environmental, social and societal constraints have pushed the nuclear industry to develop new dismantling and decommissioning (D&D) techniques in order to meet the current industrial requirements. Since 5 years, AREVA, in partnership with Air Liquide, has been working on a new cryogenic solution that can be used to achieve the main important D&D operations (i.e. cutting, surface decontamination and concrete scabbling). This solution, called NiThrow™, is based on the Nitrocision LLC concept and consists in spraying highly pressurized liquid nitrogen (3500 bar) at a very low temperature (−140°C) onto a surface. The main advantage in using liquid nitrogen instead of water is due to its rapid conversion into gaseous nitrogen that will avoid the generation of liquid effluent. The preliminary trials made in France at Saint Ouen l’Aumône and at the AREVA SICN facility by using NiThrow™ appeared to be very interesting and promising in terms of effectiveness, reduction of the dosimetry (i.e. ALARA principle) and adaptability to the different types of surfaces and materials to be treated. On an other hand, they also highlighted a couple of defects like a lack of reliability that is not compatible with a safety use in a nuclear environment. In 2009, with the aim of fixing all these issues, AREVA decided to start an extensive R&D program. This work has been essentially focused on the lancing tool, the insulation and the flexibility of the liquid nitrogen distribution network, but also on the design and the manufacturing of a waste collection unit and a dedicated carrier. Today, these R&D efforts have been totally completed. and resulted to the publication of 3 patents. Also, the collaboration, with Air Liquide and the American company Conco allows AREVA to propose to its customers a safe and reliable solution for their cleaning operations in France and all over the world.

Abstract Paraffin represents one of the main case of failures and production losses which facing the entire oil industry. Prevention of paraffin deposition on the subsurface/surface equipment can be achieved by keeping the paraffin dissolved in crude oil or minimizing the adhesion or aggregation process of wax crystals. The paraffin problems which occur, conduct to gradual reduction of the tubular and pipelines internal diameter, restriction or valves blockages, and reduce the equipment capacity until the production is stop. Problems due to paraffin deposition varies and is different according with each commercial field, sometime the difference is from a well to well which producing from the same reservoir with different consistency. How we shall proceed? Before or after paraffin is field on the equipment? How could be avoid the future paraffin deposition? How long the selected method is proper for well ? The decision represents a combination based on oil's chemical & physical characteristics, well's behavior, method selected for prevention or elimination and combined with economic analysis and field experience. The paraffin inhibition applying is a common practice in OMV Petrom, which cover majority of the production wells. For the special wells, which the paraffin inhibition didn't provided satisfying results (multiple intervention due to paraffin deposition) was selected the Down Hole Heating technology (DHH) which was successfully tested in our company since 2014 thanks according with the yearly New Technology Program. The operating principle consists in heating the fluid volume from tubing using the heating cable which can be installed inside tubing, for NF and ESP wells or outside tubing for SRP or PCP wells. The cable is designed and located at the interval of wax crystallization appearance and heats the fluid to the temperature higher than the wax crystallization point (WAT). Since then, the DHH technology had an upward course, proven by high run life (highest value 2500 days / average 813 days) of the technology at the total 47 wells equipped, until this moment. Based on the successful results, recorded of 64% of old production wells equipped, it was decided to apply the technology at first completion of the new wells (36%), thus ensuring the protection of the new equipment. The paper offers an overview of DHH technology implementation, achievements, benefits and online monitoring of technology implementation starting with 2014 until today. The total impact shown a decreasing of no.of failures with 73,8%, the cost of intervention with 76,5%. The production losses decreased only with 5%, which certifies the fact that the technology helping production maintaining during the exploitation in comparison with production losses due paraffin issues recorded at wells without equipped with DHH technology. During 6 years of down hole heating technology application were developed candidate selection decision tree, monitoring the electrical efficiency, using the adaptability capacity of the technology from one well to another and integrate the temperature parameters in online monitoring system as part of digitalization concept of OMV Petrom, aspects which will be present in this article.

Liquefaction process is one of the key technologies of offshore FLNG device and is charged by a few of the company’s patent protection. Due to the special offshore operating environment, the choice of FLNG liquefaction process is different from that of onshore. It is very important that FLNG liquefaction process suitable for the marine environment and the oil and gas properties of the South China Sea. In this paper, the static and dynamic performance of propane pre-cooling and dual nitrogen expansion liquefaction process with independent intellectual property rights have been verified by experiment loop simulation with small scale 2000m3/d and middle scale 20000m3/d. Dynamic simulation experimental measures for liquefying key devices such as cold box placed on the swing experiment platform and propane separation tank and the cold box between difference of liquid level changes, are used to verify offshore adaptability of the liquefaction process. Through the static experiments of a small experimental loop with the scale of 2000m3/d simulation considers the liquefaction rate of 93%, energy consumption 0.42kw.h/m3; Dynamic experimental results through the cold box placed on the swinging platform shows that the heat transfer performance of cold box is not affected when FLNG hull roll wave reached 3.6 degrees. The mid-scale experimental simulation of 20000m3/d show that the liquefaction process has the advantages of simple debugging process, convenient operation, quick shutdown and restart, flexible operation, good adaptability to offshore operating parameters, and can realize 3 sets of refrigeration cycles simulation. The propane pre-cooling and dual nitrogen expansion liquefaction process with independent intellectual property rights through the static and dynamic experiments of small and middle scale experimental loop, is verified to the characteristics of high liquefaction rate, low energy consumption and good offshore adaptability. The liquefaction process with independent intellectual property rights can be used to as one of FLNG facility key technologies to develop offshore gas field and faraway from onshore of the South China Sea.
