Parametric design, driven by digital technology, has sparked extensive research and debate in the domains of architecture and urban planning, offering a new approach to issue solving. Architecture and landscape architecture, like architecture and urban planning, are disciplines that are part of the artificial environment. Architectural landscape design has begun to be influenced by parametric design. This study presents a more technical parametric design technique of architectural landscape design that involves artificial intelligence parametric analysis and proposes an architectural landscape planning and design method that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) parametric analysis. This is a new discipline of concurrent design that complements and expands architectural landscape design methodologies and is based on artificial intelligence methods. This study integrates artificial intelligence parametric design theory and methodology into architectural landscape design and presents a parametric method appropriate for landscape architecture design based on architectural landscape architecture characteristics.

The article discusses the interaction between the wind regime and the landscape. Examples of objects of landscape architecture in high-tech and science-intensive spheres, such as the launch pad of a spacecraft, are given. Wind protection is represented as a result of work on wind power engineering and a means of increasing bioclimatic comfort. The terms of landscape architecture are disclosed and mutual influence on the climate and impact on woody-shrub vegetation and field crops are analyzed. The phenomenon of air permeability for optimal operation of windproof structures and orientations of geoplastics and dendroplastics is described. In this paper, a classification of terrain types is described with a description of their elemental composition, as well as various categories of landscape. The proposal to consider the landscape as a territorial complex, and landscape buildings, landscape-architectural structures as objects of landscape architecture possessing properties of wind protection and air permeability was introduced. Thus, the concept of a landscape-architectural complex as a single group of landscape-architectural objects located on the territory and connected by a common system of communications, functions, technical elements and a visual image is formulated. Further research is based on the rationale for the use of the term ensemble in relation to the objects of the landscape and architectural complex and the identification of their design and planning features that can affect the parameters of wind protection and air permeability. The paper concludes that frequent coincidence of favorable for the fauna wind regime and mimicry of landscape architecture objects. The combination in the landscape of functions for wind protection and aesthetics is analyzed with analysis of such elements of landscape architecture as hedges and windproof properties of green plantations. In the work examples of wind engineering small architectural forms are shown in the form of sculptures moving from air streams, which also change the speed and direction of the wind. All this is generalized in further directions of research within the framework of the designated terrain theme, bioclimatic comfort and wind protection.

With the dawn of the knowledge economy, China's university campus construction has reached its pinnacle. However, there are numerous issues with the related construction process, such as scale imbalances, architectural style convergence, loss of environmental characteristics, and a lack of spirit of place on many university campuses, all of which eventually lead to incompatibility between campus architecture and landscape environment, dilution of campus cultural atmosphere, and lack of sustenance for university humanistic spirit. The quality of the campus landscape has become a key criterion for judging the campus environment, as it has a significant impact on the overall environment, image, and quality of the campus. To improve the quality of the campus landscape environment, landscape design must be considered as part of architectural planning and design, and campus architecture and landscape must be integrated. Campus landscape engineering construction has a full life cycle, and construction safety has an impact on the overall situation. To ensure construction safety throughout the life cycle, a solid mathematical model of construction safety management should be established. This paper proposes using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to conduct research on landscape security, starting with the development of university campus landscapes and using mobile edge computing technology.

The article analyzes views on the formation of the concepts of "educational environment" and "learning landscape" from the perspective of pedagogical science and from the perspective of architectural theory. The author's considerations regarding the interdisciplinary connection of these concepts are presented. The article presents also individual results of the author's research on the development of the architecture of non-formal education institutions (hereafter NFEI). The learning landscape (external space of the educational institution) was analyzed as a material structural and functional component to which the following processes correspond: a group of processes of communication and education (inner courtyards, atriums, squares in front of the main entrance, training grounds, experimental sites, operated roofs, etc.); recreational processes in this context is an important addition to the full functioning of the institution as an organism; the processes that provide the economic zone, parking and external communication space of the institution are essentially those that serve and are mandatory for the reproduction of other groups of processes. Of course, these processes and the architectural and landscape elements linked to them were analyzed complexly. The analysis of these processes should be carried out in accordance with the specific conditions of the location of the NFEI, taking into account external and internal factors of influence, local traditions, history and opinion of the community, and the main decisions regarding the formation of structural and functional models of such institutions should be taken already at the stage of development concepts formation. As an illustration of an architectural object that is harmoniously combined with its external space, the Community Centre Kastelli (Oulu, Finland) was given. Currently, it is rather difficult to give an unequivocal definition of the concept of "learning landscape", since there is a significant difference in the interpretation of this phenomenon in the pedagogical field and in the concept of landscape that is familiar to architects. Therefore, from the point of view of the architectural theory, namely in matters of formation of the architecture of new-type educational institutions (for example, NFEI), the following interpretation is proposed: "learning landscape" is a logical and consistent structural and functional component of an educational institution, as an object of architecture, which should be designed with the ability to dynamically develop in close connection with the architecture of the educational institution building and takes into account modern and predictive educational scenarios. At the same time, the "educational landscape" in the sense presented above is a necessary link of the subsystem of education, which expresses its educational and material component, is accessible to all segments of the population and must be meaningfully and objectively organized. In the structure of the conceptual apparatus of the socio-pedagogical phenomenon of the "educational environment" ("educational space", learning landscape), the architectural "learning landscape" is hierarchically subordinated to the latest and prognostic educational scenarios (the influence of external factors) and is a regular and dynamic structural and functional component of the conceptual, and further, the material manifestation of the formation of the educational institution's architecture.

Urban renewal urgently needs to find a new media tool to extensively promote public participation. Professionals also need strong and powerful communication tools for the public. Mass media has the ability to influence human perceptions and behaviors, but its role has been overlooked. This study aims to arouse professionals’ attention to mass media and promote interdisciplinary cooperation through empirical evidence. By observing the performance of participatory urban gardening projects in Chinese newspapers, we highlight the positive effect of mass media on participatory landscape revitalization. We selected two projects in China as samples, collected newspaper reports on them during 2017–2021, and analyzed the textual framing and report communication based on communication theory. According to the result, mass media has four positive effects that not only affect the public but also contribute to participatory landscape revitalization development. Based on the results, we discuss the consistence of views of the mass media and landscape architecture. This study suggests that landscape architecture needs to actively collaborate with public media to better leverage the role of landscape in sustainable urban transformation.

Digital landscape representation tends to be used mainly to provide illustrations of designed landscapes that have not been actualized, rather than to deploy operational design strategies during the design and reception process. The present study offers a critique of this direction of digital representation towards realism in current landscape design. To illustrate this pervasive trend, the authors have coined the term ‘photo-fake’: an image that imitates the actual existence of a designed and not-yet-actualized landscape. The study then discusses several photo-fake conditions (invisible frame and the viewer’s position, creating illusions, landscape as theatre and human figures as spectators, and digital aura), through which the visual materials developed in 2012 for the International Competition for the Master Plan of Yongsan Park, Korea, are scrutinized. Through this analysis, the authors contend that a photo-fake’s realism is not the actual realism of the physical world but rather depends on the established pictorial convention of fine arts and 18th-century picturesque aesthetics in landscape architecture.

The Central Andean ceremonial centre of Chavín de Huántar is situated in a dramatic, mountainous and dynamic environment high on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, yet the site's landscape setting has remained in the shadow of its monumental architecture, complex lithic art and highly elaborated material culture. Nevertheless, that dynamic landscape setting was an integral part of the site's significance as a ceremonial centre and may be read as evidence of the capacity, worldview and message of the site's builders. First, Chavín's setting is evidence of capacity, demonstrating the considerable degree of labour mobilization and organization, as well as expertise, implied by the site's modified landscape. Second, Chavín's landscape, considered in its Central Andean context, provides evidence of worldview, demonstrating that landscape setting was a medium of interest for Chavín's designers. Third, the modified landscape provides evidence of message, allowing exploration of what Chavín's designers were trying to communicate, and to whom. Focusing on these three aspects in reading Chavín's landscape suggests that landscape setting was a vital aspect of Central Andean Middle and Late Formative Period (1000–500 bce) ceremonial centres and argues that emergent elites actively exploited landscape setting as a communicative medium and forum for dissemination of ideology, deliberately communicating to multiple audiences.

The question of how to show processes that are by definition time-based has been one of the more intriguing ones in the field of landscape representation. With ever-greater importance being given to values of space that can be measured, we ask if new approaches to the drawing of space are needed to unveil these measured, sometimes hidden landscapes. With this in mind, students in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Ljubljana undertaking the Visual Communication course were tasked with developing new techniques of data visualization focusing on (1) the spatial dynamics of landscapes and (2) on the multiscalarity of the representations. The paper comprises a general description and discussion of the topic, accompanied by seven sets of drawings where the two above-mentioned aspects are briefly discussed in the drawings’ captions. The drawings presented here push and question the boundaries of drawing conventions and consequently elicit uncertainty and encourage further enquiry. Exploring new drawing approaches is an important part of revealing contemporary landscapes.

Creating the Urban Eden, a course taught jointly by faculty in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture at Cornell University, is a unique two-semester class spanning the academic year from August to May. Students face the task of creating viable, sustainable landscapes both in theory and practice. The success and sustainability of any planting design is ultimately dependent upon knowledgeable site assessment and analysis, appropriate plant selection, and clear communication of design intentions. This class teaches all aspects of landscape establishment, including detailed site assessment, woody plant identification, choice of appropriate plants, planting design, soil remediation, transplanting, and early maintenance in human-impacted landscapes. In addition to designing for a specific site, students learn about written specifications for technical planting and graphic details to communicate and implement design proposals. Every year on the Cornell University campus, the students in this class implement, in a hands-on manner, all aspects of landscape establishment that they have learned by creating new landscapes that serve to integrate theory, principles, practice, and provide a demonstration of fundamentals taught in the class.

The aim of this work is to identify the existing design objects of tree shaping representing visual communication of the city and a feasibility of its use in the urban environment. Research findings: The current problems of cities include degradation of green spaces, low level of environmental improvement and landscape organization and insufficient visual communication elements that contribute to the creation of appropriate urban environment. To reduce the negative factors of the anthropogenic environment, tree shaping is proposed to improve the urban architecture and development. Tree shaping is hardy-shrub species resistant (adaptive) to the humane correction; their trunks and branches represent architectural forms. Depending on the arrangement, tree shaping can be attributed to the elements of open and closed spaces of different functional purposes. This paper discusses tree shaping as visual communication elements of the city, such as street advertising and information boards, advertising towers, banners, environmental guidelines, etc. Tree shaping can be attributed to wellestablished scientific tradition in western countries, but in Russia it is still underdeveloped. Approach: Comparative analysis of tree shaping design solutions. Practical implications: Tree shaping as the urban visual communication contributes to the creation of eco-friendly, aesthetical and informative environment of the city. The obtained results can be used in research works devoted to tree shaping. Originality/value: This research proposes the use of tree shaping objects as visual communication of the city.

Abstract Amid the massive project of national reconstruction—characterized by urbanization and social upheaval—that followed the American Civil War, Frederick Law Olmsted reenvisioned built environments across the nation. This article claims that, for Olmsted and his contemporaries, who were simultaneously curious about, skeptical of, and fearful of the new cities, his designs attempted to show the democratic potential of urban environments. Reading his speeches and essays alongside his designs, it suggests that Olmsted promised the new cities and their parks and parkways as sites of democratic inclusion and democratic virtue. These built environments, as material rhetorics shaping our everyday, pedestrian habits, cultivated a specific practice of citizenship, one that was, this article argues, characterized by a countercultural temporality, pedestrian mobility, recreation, and civic scopophilia. Today, we inherit the parks and cityscapes that Olmsted designed as well as their aspirations for democratic citizenship.

Today, a modern large city can only be imagined with specialised landscape objects. They belong to the group of public facilities, the functional feature of which is formed, as a rule, under the pressure of the city’s cultural, social and historical environment. The presence of such facilities provides a wide range of recreational activities and contributes to the multifaceted development of the personality of visitors. The article presents a methodology developed by the authors for assessing the attractiveness and integration into the urban gardening system of specialised objects of landscape architecture in Novosibirsk. The proposed method makes it possible to determine the popularity of an entity among the population, its accessibility, its performance of the prevailing function, the possibility of social integration of people with disabilities, and the organisation of the landscape on the territory. Five specialised objects of various functional orientations were identified in the structure of Novosibirsk. Among them, parks of communication with nature and protect flora and fauna prevail in number (Central Siberian Botanical Garden, Dendrological Park, Novosibirsk Zoo named after R.A. Shilo). These objects are also the most popular among the residents of the city. The main factor in attracting visitors to such sites is the cognitive function. The historical and architectural open-air museum needs to be better integrated into the system of urban landscaping due to poor awareness of citizens about this object, the lack of developed transport and pedestrian communications and unhindered access for all categories of citizens. The dendrological park needs a reconstruction of the landscape organisation and functional zoning of the territory; for this object, the problem of popularization among the city’s residents is also relevant in the course of the analysis of specialized landscape objects of Novosibirsk, the Central Siberian Botanical Garden, the Central Park, the Novosibirsk Zoo named after N.N. R.A. Awl. However, none of them fully meets all the necessary criteria. Reconstruction of varying degrees is required for each facility, considering social trends and modern processes.

Abstract The rich diversity of the Cerrado flora has great ornamental potential, however it is barely present in Landscape Architecture projects in Brazil and incipient in the commercial market. The study sought to systematize part of the knowledge generated by the experiences of eight professionals who work in the Landscape Architecture field and are part of a spontaneous and growing movement that seeks the development of management techniques and a language referenced by phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado, especially its savannas and grasslands. Information was gathered from semi-structured interviews with eight professionals with practical experience in introducing Cerrado flora species in Landscape Architecture projects and analyzed to identify motivations, composition and language aspects, most-used species, technical aspects of implementation and management and perceptions of market and production chain. Reiterated points were mapped and categorized. Interviews revealed efforts to develop a compositional language referenced by the Cerrado with a predominance of herbaceous species and high species diversity in keeping with the contemporary naturalistic Landscape Architecture movement. A list of 84 potentially ornamental species used by interviewees was compiled. Difficulties and market impasses were identified. Much needed strategies for increasing Cerrado flora species use in Landscape Architecture are: engagement of society via environmental education, communication and marketing; research on Cerrado soil and ecology for species selection; qualification of labor; advocacy for public policies including promotion of production chains, research and education.

This concept has been shifting perspectives among some scientists and making them question traditional values about human-nature interactions in a rapidly changing era dominated by anthropogenic actions (Anthropocene). Controversial dimensions surrounding the Novel Ecosystems and Novel Urban Ecosystems terms may be preventing the evolution and further research of these concepts. The environmental problems that our society will soon face support a search for innovative solutions and transdisciplinary efforts. For that reason, this discussion should not cease, rather should expand to other fields of knowledge that can contribute with pertinent insights and collaborations. This way, this short communication aims to reflect on the opportunities from Landscape Architecture to the discussion, research, and application of the novel ecosystems concepts in the real world, particularly in the urban landscape, and also reflect on the opportunities of this debate to the Landscape Architecture field. The Weighted Sum Method (WSM) is an approach for decision-making and optimization that assesses and contrasts multiple alternatives through a set of criteria. It offers a structured means of amalgamating these criteria, each with its own significance, into a single value. In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), there are 63 territories of traditional land use of the Indigenous Minorities of the North within the boundaries of municipal districts and nasleg (lowest municipal division), as well as nomadic tribal communities. Almost 58 % of the republic’s territory is under the traditional land use status. The traditional use of natural resources and traditional lifestyles of indigenous peoples are inextricably linked to the resource potential and ecological state of natural landscapes. The paper is aimed to develop a standardized methodology for the design of a small-scale landscape map of traditional land use in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Based on the review of atlas approaches to landscape structure mapping of protected natural areas, we propose to use a multi-thematic dataset of geospatial layers according to the criteria of the classification of typological, regional and basin categories of landscapes. The dataset includes layers from previously published landscape maps and permafrost-landscape regionalization maps, soil-vegetation maps, and global geospatial data for Hammond relief regions, GMTED2010 digital elevation model and HydroBASINS river basins. Methods for delineation of mapped units include overlay geoprocessing, zonal statistics, and relief analysis. For the basemap, the description of typological landscape units includes landscape subclass-genus-type(subtype) and terrain type. The methodology was tested for the Ust-Maiskij district with predominance of mountain taiga and mid-taiga landscapes and Eveno-Bytantaiskij national district with predominance of mountain-tundra, mountain-woodland and north taiga landscapes. The obtained landscape maps contain 36 typological units that synthesize 6 subclasses, 7 landscape types (subtypes) and 12 terrain types by 5 landscape provinces and large river basins (Lena, Yana, Omoloi and Aldan). Thus, the proposed landscape mapping methodology covers the holistic spatial structure of the leading components, allowing for a multidimensional approach to territorial planning and functional zoning of traditional land use.

This paper deals with the potential of Third Generation Partnership (3GPP) Project mobile cellular standards to enable vehicular communications. Starting from 3GPP Release 15, and Release 16 specifications for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, the different communication modes, interfaces and use cases for V2X based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) and New Radio (NR) are analyzed. This research also studies the potential beneficial impact on V2X of a network that is aware of the underlying Multi-RAT Dual Connectivity (MR-DC) architecture. The methodology followed in this work consists of a review of 3GPP standards for vehicular communications based on mobile networks. The performance evaluation of the communication modes was performed through simulations taking into account resource allocation schemes, packet transmission frequencies, packet size, vehicle density and other parameters defined in the standard. In order to perform simulations of the decentralized communication mode (mode 4), a simulator based on OMNeT++ was configured. For the centralized mode (mode 3), an analytical model in MATLAB was used to configure different simulation scenarios. The results obtained indicate that LTE networks can only support basic V2X use cases because they do not demand strict potential requirements. Simulations showed that the centralized mode offers better performance than mode 4; however, it requires cellular network coverage. More advanced use cases are key for a future Intelligent Transport System (ITS), high-performance networks (i.e., Fifth Generation (5G), NR) are expected to coexist gradually with LTE in the V2X landscape. Therefore, in order to meet the strict requirements for latency, transmission speed and reliability, MR-DC architectures combining different radio access technologies, communication modes and connection interfaces should be deployed. In addition, operation in multi-operator and cross-border scenarios must be guaranteed.

Abstract Today’s landscape of medical devices is dominated by stand-alone systems and proprietary interfaces lacking cross-vendor interoperability. This complicates or even impedes the innovation of novel, intelligent assistance systems relying on the collaboration of medical devices. Emerging approaches use the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm based on Internet protocol (IP) to enable communication between medical devices. While this works well for scenarios with no or only soft timing constraints, the underlying best-effort communication scheme is insufficient for time critical data. Real-time (RT) networks are able to reliably guarantee fixed latency boundaries, for example, by using time division multiple access (TDMA) communication patterns. However, deterministic RT networks come with their own limitations such as tedious, inflexible configuration and a more restricted bandwidth allocation. In this contribution we overcome the drawbacks of both approaches by describing and implementing mechanisms that allow the two networks to interact. We introduce the first implementation of a medical device network that offers hard RT guarantees for control and sensor data and integrates into SOA networks. Based on two application examples we show how the flexibility of SOA networks and the reliability of RT networks can be combined to achieve an open network infrastructure for medical devices in the operating room (OR).

The need of individuals to identify with the environment and the ability to create a schematic isometric image of their surroundings are essential factors affecting participation in social relations. Spatial orientation in itself reflects the ability of people to read complex urban space and identify with the place. The presented work studies spatial orientation in the urban space in the context of landscape design. It analyses and searches for opportunities to apply instruments of a landscape architect as a means of improving spatial orientation and readability of the city. The study makes a synthesis of all the data obtained from the environment model. The methodology of work includes sections of a professional urban view combined with mental mapping of current users of the urban space. The total synthesis was preceded by an intermediate stage of classification which was a comparison of the mental map with the reality in order to obtain “memorable” elements in the urban space, in which it was fundamental to see which entity the communication partner drew first and what entity it is in terms of spatial urban structure. Another parameter was the frequency of occurrence method. The presented study responds to this strong spatial anchoring of the memorable orientation entity by defining the landscape element and this is supplemented by the aspect of spatial orientation. The landscape element is defined on the basis of the evolution parkway-greenway→greenfindingway. Its substantiation is multiplied not only from the aspect of spatial economy but also in correlation to the dynamic recreational pattern, psychological well-being or the preference of sustainable mobility. The final document of the study in the form of the so-calledwayfinding maphas the potential of a foundation material which can be applied to strategic and urban designing as a sum of unbiased data in correlation to involvement of the public into the process of creating the urban space.

The wireless Internet of Things (IoT) landscape is quite diverse. For instance, Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technologies offer low data rate communication over long distance, whereas Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technologies can reach higher data rates, but with a reduced range. For simple IoT applications, communication requirements can be fulfilled by a single technology. However, the requirements of more demanding IoT use cases can vary over time and with the type of data being exchanged. This is pushing the design towards multimodal approaches, where different wireless IoT technologies are combined and the most appropriate one is used as per the need. This paper considers the combination of Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) as communication options for an IoT device that is running a Lightweight Machine to Machine/Constrained Application Protocol (LwM2M/CoAP) protocol stack. It analyses the challenges incurred by different protocol stack options, such as different transfer modes (IP versus non-IP), the use of Static Context Header Compression (SCHC) techniques, and Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) security modes, and discusses the impact of handover between both communication technologies. A suitable end-to-end architecture for the targeted multimodal communication is presented. This article draws on experiments with techniques of visual documentation and representation in circumstances of topographic intensity in Hong Kong. Centrally, the authors ask: how can approaches to visual representation reveal or reframe assemblages of material and immaterial processes in hyper-dense and hyper-topographic urban landscapes? The shaping and reshaping of the ground are essential parts of the formation of recombinant ecosystems, especially in intensively built-up environments – the constant reconfiguration of materials and spaces continually brings into being new ecological conditions. However, the visualization and representation of these transformations are often absent from the repertoire of techniques used to map and understand urban processes. This article addresses how landscape architecture can continue to develop methods to record, represent, visualize and design recombinant ecosystems in our urban environments. It considers which tools and techniques might provide ‘thickened’ understandings of hyper-dense, small-scale and intensely topographic urban environments like Hong Kong, with the objective of assisting designers and planners develop new ways to understand and see public space that can address the human and more-than-human nuances of complex urban spaces over time.

Architecture networking and computer digital technologies are critical in building design and construction. They have transformed architects' and designers' approaches to building design, making it more efficient, accurate, and collaborative. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact that architectural networking and computer digital technology have on aesthetic quality and user experience, with a particular emphasis on the role that functionality plays in mediating the relationship and the role that client preferences play in moderating the relationship. A quantitative approach was taken to the research, and data was obtained from 375 participants through the use of an online survey. The participants were shown a hypothetical building design via digital technology, and they were given the task of rating the aesthetically pleasing qualities of the building as well as the overall user experience. According to the findings of the research conducted, architectural networking and computer digital technology had a considerable impact, both positively and significantly, on the aesthetic quality of the building design as well as the user experience. In addition, it was discovered that functionality partially mediated the relationship between architecture networking and aesthetic quality and user experience. This finding lends credence to the idea that the functionality of a building's design played an important part in determining both the aesthetic quality and the user experience of the building. It was discovered that client preferences had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between architecture networking and aesthetic quality/user experience. This finding indicates that the impact of architecture networking on aesthetic quality and user experience was more pronounced when the clients preferred modern and innovative designs.

The architecture and urbanism of the totalitarian regimes, despite the ideological shades that have been produced from different systems, in their core share similar principles which mainly derive from the use of the urban area as an expression of political propaganda. The socialist city was considered by the politics of that time as the greatest social achievement of the Marxist proletariat. It was the same unique place where the functions of residence, production, sport and recreation were mixed together, by also searching a strained unity that was supposed to dialogue more in a territorial scale rather than in a human one. Although there can be found some similarities with the Western industrial city, - like the idea of deurbanisation, - principally the new socialist city was created to generate the supporting mass based on the bynom ‘residence-production’. The decoration and the integration of the so-called ‘national style’ in the city architecture was considered more like a communication and a means of attraction for the new emergent citizenship, rather than as an integral part of architecture. Meanwhile, by that time in Western countries, the debate about the usage of styles and decorations had already been superated, while building tradition has been integrated and transformed in modern developments. Albania, as the last country to be part of the ex-socialist campus and also the last one that left it, basically manifests similar characteristics with it, however some sort of radicalization as a result of the historical and geopolitical causes can be noted.

The theory of natural landscapes is one of the central and most complex concepts of modern physical geography. As is well known, in Western science, the concept of “landscape” is recognized only as a general one and is usually used to designate geosystems that have been exposed to anthropogenic influence for a long time. In this regard, geoinformation modeling all over the world (outside Russia) in recent decades has been mainly devoted to obtaining the so-called “landscape cover” Landuse-Landcover, which represents some kind of land use types, fragments of cultural landscape and urbanized areas mixture. Attempts at geoinformation modeling aimed at delimiting territorial natural complexes in the West and developing predictive maps of vegetation, soil cover and “habitats” are similar in content and algorithms to the approaches used for semi-automated mapping of natural landscapes. The development of synthetic geoinformation modeling methods was largely associated with overcoming the theoretical difficulties and controversial “plots” of Russian landscape science, which include ideas about the role of the morpholithogenic basis and biota of the landscape, taking into account the “leading” factors of differentiation, the presence of objective spatial hierarchical levels of landscape differentiation, and others. In this article, using the example of a key area of the Elbrus Region National Park, the capabilities of the traditional technique of expert-manual mapping are compared with mapping in a geoinformation environment. It is shown that the intuitive actions taken by an expert drawing a landscape map, although not strictly algorithmic in reality, are nevertheless close in content to complex variants of cluster analysis and decision trees. It is substantiated that the best option for landscape synthesis is not an overlay of finite classes of the morpholithogenic base and biota, but a joint analysis (cluster or isocluster classification) of many initial variables, in particular, geomorphometric parameters and landscape-vegetation indices. Supervised classifications with the creation of training files based on the author’s manual landscape maps give the worst result compared to uncontrolled ones, which, firstly, indicates the inaccuracy of the drawn maps, and secondly, the authors’ failure to comply with any strict algorithms and phenomena, which may be labeled as “changing the rules on the fly”.

This visual essay explores the anatomy of model trees and the beauty evident in their creation. The aim is to explore the interpretive aspect that both drives and allows for this inventive exploration of trees. The authors highlight the important interplay between landscape, botany, architecture, art, and design, all of which will aid readers in formulating their own vision of trees.
