Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe aim of this work is to describe and understand the organisation of collaboration between teachers for the purposes of professionalisation in the Senegalese context. A study of prescriptions and actual practices reveals several trends. The loss of meaning may be reflected in the different evolving aims of the teachers, who modify the organisation and choice of themes addressed in the exchanges. The discontinuity between the prescribed and the actual may explain the lack of diversity of themes and the absenteeism of some teachers. Tensions and contradictions were observed with regard to the commitment of the actors and the use of IT and didactic tools. Teachers' personal initiatives show a desire to continue to collaborate through the zonal pedagogical coordination units. The institutional discourse highlights the successes of integrating IT tools into the system, particularly in Casamance, while the attitudes of the players in practice differ from case to case. They adjust according to the collective and individual dynamics of the system, in a top-down, bottom-up or iterative approach. Thus, collaboration between teachers within a working framework is presented as one of the possible avenues for professionalisation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe goal of this master thesis is to understand how the collaborative work experience within professional learning communities is experienced by their members. More precisely, it attempts to give an answer to the following question: « What are the perceptions that participants have regarding the benefits of their engagement to a professional learning communities, and what are the challenges that they perceive during their involvement? » To answer this question, some of the data which was collected in the framework of a project funded by the « Conseil de la recherche en sciences humaines du Canada », headed by Yamina Bouchamma, was used. The precise data is made from the answers to two questions which are parts of semi-directed interviews performed with directors, adjunct directors, teachers and other professionals from institutions ranging from primary schools to universities (N=23). They are members from twelve learning communities in Québec and in New-Brunswick. To pinpoint the perception of participants, their discourse was analyzed using continuous thematic analysis, according to Paillé and Mucchielli (2012). A first list of codes is composed of the four components of the theory of learning, proposed by Wenger (2009). That is: the identity, the community, the practice and the meaning. The results from this analysis give a broad landscape of the professionalization experience of the participants, through the learning communities as a place to elaborate professional representations. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this study, we examined the online professional learning community (PLC) approach used to support the professional development of education stakeholders. Specifically, we sought to identify the instigators and promoters of these online PLCs, the needs expressed regarding training, the means deployed for effective outcomes, and the issues interfering with professional growth within the PLC. We conducted semi-structured interviews with teachers, principals, education consultants, and facilitators who were members of online PLCs (N = 10) and onsite PLCs (N = 39) in two Canadian provinces, namely Québec and New Brunswick. Several questions were asked during the course of this research: Who is responsible for integrating information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the PLCs? What impact do ICTs have in the PLCs and how are they deployed? How is the collaborative process experienced between principals, education consultants, teachers and training instructors in an online PLC? What are the roles of these education stakeholders and how do online PLCs contribute to their professional development? What type of training do online PLC members need? And finally, which challenges and issues experienced by PLC members interfere with proper functioning and performance? Our conceptual framework was inspired by elements from four recognized theoretical models: Wenger’s social learning theory (2005), Huberman’s professional life cycle model for networking teachers (1995), Engeström’s human activity theory (1994), and Daele’s teacher professional development model in online communities (2004). Our results show that teachers and principals were most likely to instigate ICT implementation in PLCs. The development of ICT skills facilitated collaboration between the PLC members. Indeed, the latter expressed both their interest and need for ICT training to continue improving collaboration and communication within their community, and they concurred that integrating technologies would be beneficial to the PLC’s structure and performance. In addition to agreeing that developing computer skills would help their work as a PLC, our study’s respondents also emphasized a need for this training to further their professional development. Our results show that in online PLCs. time factors and having to adapt to new ICTs represented major issues hampering the advancement of these communities. Regarding their work within the PLC, our respondents stated various needs. On one hand were the professional aspects, namely, educational, pedagogical, and didactic needs, and on the other hand were needs relative to their participation in tasks within the PLC, such as keeping informed on certain subjects, being supervised, and benefiting from continuing education throughout their time in the PLC. Finally, our results reveal two significant issues hindering performance outcomes in these PLCs: financial concerns and the lack of available technologies in certain remote area schools.

What links can be established between the key practices of school principals in the management of teamwork and some of their characteristics (socio-demographic, socio-professional, socio-cognitive)? This study will answer these questions from a questionnaire study with principals and vice-principals of schools in Quebec and New Brunswick (N = 112), in which we conducted factor analysis, correlation tests, regression tests and statistical hypothesis tests. Significant results are highly rated in the practices and perceptions of school principals and their socio-cognitive characteristics (senses of self-efficacy, professional efficacy and collective efficacy). Our results suggest a significant link between a high sense of self-efficacy felt by directions and practices in disadvantaged areas. Other significant differences between the practices and perceptions of school principals and some socio-demographic factors and socio-professional characteristics are presented and discussed. ¿Cuáles son las funciones y las percepciones de las direcciones de escuelas en el desarrollo del personal docente? ¿Qué relaciones hay que establecer entre las prácticas claves de la dirección de la escuela en cuanto a la forma de trabajo de equipo y algunas de sus características (sociodemográficas, socio laborales y cognitivas) y las de la escuela? Éste estudio responderá a estas preguntas gracias a un cuestionario al cual respondieron las direcciones de algunas escuelas en Quebec y en Nuevo Brunswick (N = 112). En éste estudio hemos llevado a cabo un análisis factorial, análisis de correlación, pruebas de regresión y unas pruebas de hipótesis. Mediante éste se observaron también resultados significativos entre las prácticas y percepciones de los directores y sus características cognitivas (sentidos de auto-eficacia, de eficacia profesional y de eficacia colectiva). Otros factores relevantes entre las prácticas y percepciones de los directores de escuela y algunos de las caractérisicas sociodemográficas y socio-profesionales son presentados y discutidos. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this research, a new type of teacher professional development was introduced through the professional learning community (PLC) work model in a group of elementary schools of the Diamaré Department in Cameroon’s Far North province. Specifically, we sought to identify the effects of this professional development model on student learning. Ten elementary schools participated in this study (6 experimental groups and 4 control groups). The schools in the experimental group worked as PLCs and were composed of 48 teachers who had a total of 3065 students (Cycle 2: grades 3 and 4; Cycle 3: grades 5 and 6). The non-PLC control group consisted of 4 schools located elsewhere in the city, with 20 teachers responsible for 976 students. Our participative action research initiative employed the action research model of Susman and Evered (1978) and was divided into several stages: diagnostic assessment, action planning, action, evaluation, and finally identification of the new knowledge acquired. The first phase consisted of a focused assessment of the existing teacher professional development model: Using Guskey’s professional development evaluation model (Guskey, 2000), we instigated an evaluative process at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year to gather the PLC members’ comments and reactions throughout the year. The second phase involved the introduction of the PLC approach within the targeted schools. The members of the various school teams working as PLCs met for 10 collaborative meetings to discuss their students’ results in mathematics and French and to learn different pedagogical strategies to improve both their teaching practices and their students’ outcomes. Finally, a quasi-experimental method using the difference in difference technique was conducted and student pre-test/post-test assessments in both core subjects were administered in the form of a standardized test to the students attending the PLC and non-PLC schools. The students’ results on both tests were recorded at the beginning and at the end of the school year. Our findings reveal that the teacher professional development model currently used in Cameroon’s elementary education sector did not meet the expectations and training needs of its teachers. While the content covered during the continuing development activities was designed to improve teaching practices, the frequency with which these training sessions were organized was not enough to sustain any clear improvement of teaching practices and consequently, of student achievement. Schools did their best to support a climate of discussion and collaboration for their teachers; however, they failed to provide their teachers with crucial resources for their professional growth. As a result, the teacher professional development in the schools functioning as PLCs had no perceivable effect on student achievement during the school year under study. Our results also indicate that the teachers’ perceptions regarding the quality of their professional development activities were the same, regardless of gender. Of interest is that the PLC experience did generate greater awareness among the teachers regarding student failure in an education system demonstrating no clear accountability. After one year of operation, the schools working as PLCs were still in the initiation phase of this growth process, which may explain the absence of tangible improvements in terms of student achievement at the end of the school year; at this stage, the impact of the new practices developed within the PLC relative to student learning was too early to measure. This observation is supported by other findings on the subject (Huffman & Hipp, 2003; Leclerc, Moreau & Lépine, 2009). Indeed, the effects of the PLC professional development model are most often evidenced after at least two years of operation, when the PLC reaches full institutionalization (Peiying & Wang, 2015).

We assume the information and communication sociotechnical devices participate in the horizontalisation of student's practices. We highlight the paradox of these learning communities which are, unwittingly, in a process of social domination by having choosing a priori a decentralized structure
