This master's thesis analyzes and redesigns the current performance design of the Main Library in Najran University campus, Najran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to achieve a completely energy independent and off-grid building. The research demonstrates the energy development in KSA, investigates and analyzes the project, and studies the energy systems. Climate data for Najran city was generated and analyzed in Climate Consultant 6.0. The research examines case studies from hot-arid climates that are responsive climatically. In addition, the energy generation and storage systems are calculated and specified to the building and its site; Quick Energy Simulation Tool (eQUEST) was used to analyze and simulate the energy use in the existing building. Furthermore, Revit software was utilized to develop the project design and simulate daylight intensity for indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, Cool Vent simulated the natural ventilation for the building for the low-energy performance case and the high-energy performance case, and direct passive evaporative cool towers were simulated in COOLT software. Appropriate building envelopes, passive cooling strategies, and native landscapes are applied to the off-grid case. Solar power generation outcomes, wind turbines output, batteries size are optimized in HOMER energy simulation software; thus, this off-grid building generates electricity more than its use, then, stores the extra energy in batteries banks. Through this research energy independency was accomplished with a reduction in total energy consumption by 64%, and human thermal comfort levels were attained in the proposed design.

Nell’alveo delle indagini sulla storia del commercio librario nell’Italia del Settecento, attente a individuare i legami fra circolazione del libro, diffusione delle idee illuministe e riforme politiche nella seconda metà del secolo, la ricerca ha l’obiettivo di offrire un quadro articolato della fisionomia di un mercante del libro attivo nel periodo più intenso del riformismo estense nel ducato di Modena: Moïsè Beniamino Foà (1730-1821). Il primo capitolo della tesi riguarda le cariche ufficiali che questi ricoprì al servizio delle istituzioni culturali promosse da Francesco III d’Este, le vicende che lo implicarono nelle maglie della censura e il suo impegno civile e politico a favore dei processi di emancipazione degli ebrei in età giacobina e napoleonica. Il secondo tenta di interpretare la genesi della sua fortuna economica attraverso l’esame del testamento e dell’inventario dell’asse ereditario: nel panorama di precarietà dei mestieri del libro dal secolo dei lumi ai primi decenni della Restaurazione, pare arduo individuare un libraio comparabile a Foà per solidità e capacità di investimento. All’analisi della clientela del mercante è dedicato il terzo capitolo, che si sviluppa seguendo il filo dei rapporti diplomatici intessuti da Francesco III con le corti italiane nell’orbita dell’influenza politica e culturale asburgica. Si descrivono, quindi, i viaggi europei e la rete dei contatti commerciali che garantirono la ricchezza dell’offerta rispecchiata dai numerosi cataloghi librari pubblicati nel corso di oltre un cinquantennio. Di questi si offre una descrizione bibliografica e quantitativa con un affondo sulla diffusione del libro scientifico. Con la fisionomia del mercante viaggiatore, Foà coniugava quella dell’erudito bibliofilo: la ricerca si conclude con la presentazione della sua biblioteca e dei suoi rapporti con i filologi dell’epoca.
In the context of an insight on the history of book trade in Italy during the XVIII century, also focusing on the interplay between book circulation, spread of Enlightenment ideas and political reforms of the second half of the century, this research aims at providing a comprehensive framework of a book trader who was highly committed within the most compelling period of the Estense Duchy in Modena. The first chapter analyses the official assignments he was appointed at, serving in the cultural institutions promoted by Francesco III Este, and also relevant incidents with censorship and his social and political engagement for the empowerment of the Jewish community across the Age of Napoleon. The second chapter attempts to provide an interpretation of the background of his economic fortune through the study of his last will and of the inventory of movable and immovable property. Foà seems to be a unique book seller for his determination and entrepreneurship, particularly in light of the uncertain situation of book related professional activities from the age of Enlightenment to the beginning of European Restoration. The third chapter outlines the major features of his customers, by following Francesco III diplomatic relations with the Italian states under the Habsburg political and cultural influence. The fourth chapter entails accurate references to Foà’s journeys to Europe and to his trade network which enriched relevant catalogues, published during more than fifty years. Foà acted as both a business man and a scholar: conclusive remarks concern Foà library and his relations with contemporary philologists.

Il lavoro ha indagato alcuni aspetti del primo trentennio di vita dell'officina tipografica bolognese fondata da Francesco Platone de' Benedetti (1482-1496), focalizzandosi in particolare sulla produzione del primo erede, il nipote Giovanni Antonio (1499-1512), sui rispettivi cataloghi culturali e, infine, sul mercato librario bolognese a cavallo fra il XV e il XVI secolo. Tre i punti nodali della ricerca: 1) la rappresentazione del circuito intellettuale che gravitò attorno ai due de’ Benedetti, con particolare attenzione per i curatori editoriali; 2) l’accertamento delle edizioni sine notis ancora da attribuire in via definitiva a Francesco de’ Bendetti, per una comparazione credibile dei cataloghi di zio e nipote e per comprendere, fin dove possibile, le logiche commerciali che Francesco progettava per la sua azienda; 3) un’analisi del progetto culturale di Francesco de' Benedetti basandosi sul suo inventario di magazzino, da cui si evincono: il pubblico cui l’officina mirò, le coordinate (geografiche e culturali) del mercato del libro a Bologna sullo scorcio del secolo XV, i confini del network commerciale in cui Platone de’ Benedetti seppe inserire la sua impresa.
The research has investigated some aspects of the first three decades of the bolognese typography founded by Francesco Platone de 'Benedetti (1482-1496), focusing, in particular, on the production of the first heir, his nephew Giovanni Antonio (1499-1512), on their cultural catalogs and, finally, on the book trade in Bologna between Fifteenth and Sixteenth centuries. Three key points of the research: 1) the representation of the intellectuals (their life, their work) gravitated around the typography, with particular attention to the editors; 2) analysis of the sine notis editions still attributed to Francesco Benedetti, for a comparison of the catalogs of uncle and nephew, and to understand, as far as possible, the commercial logic Francesco was planning for his business; 3) an analysis of Francesco Benedetti's cultural project, based on his famous shop inventory, from which can be deduced: the custumers the typography aimed to, geographical and cultural coordinates of the book trade in Bologna at the turn of the XV century, the shape of the commercial network in which Francesco de 'Benedetti entered his business.

Le premier chapitre résume et anticipe une grande partie des thèmes de la recherche. Le §.1 et le 2 montrent la surprise et l'égarement de certains autorisés intellectuels libéraux démocratiques face à la victoire de Berlusconi en 1994, qui, avec les transformations de la loi électorale en 1993, marquerait, selon l'opinion courante, le passage à la " deuxième République ". Ma recherche suggère plutôt que 1994 a été le retour à une culture antipolitique longtemps refoulée, que Berlusconi a bien su interpréter et représenter, tant dans ses télévisions que dans sa propagande politique directe. En revanche à mon avis c'est la défaite des référendums de 1995 pour l'abrogation du duopole télévisuel et pour la limitation de la publicité (§.3) qui montre des indices bien plus forts de son hégémonie en tant que personnage public et " commanager " (" communication manager " - P. Musso), mais les politiciens traditionnels ont de graves responsabilités en ce qui concerne les origines du duopole et le développement de son hégémonie télévisuelle (§.4). Dans le §.5,6 et 8 j'expose les deux clefs d'interprétation de l'histoire de la néo-télévision qui guideront ma recherche surtout dans les ch. 5, 6 et 7 : l' " effet Meyrowitz " et l' " l'effet Chomsky " (les guillemets sont nécessaires car je ne prétends pas qu'il s'agisse de théories pouvant être universalisées et formalisées, mais seulement de critères pour l'organisation et l'interprétation des données historiques). La première suggère la possibilité que la néo-télévision en Italie ait stimulé la perte progressive de l'aura, du prestige et de l'autorité des parents, des politiciens et en général des adultes. La théorie de Meyrowitz, inspirée à la sociologie dramaturgique de Goffman, visait à expliquer l'époque des mouvements de la contestation en Amérique par le biais de la diffusion de la télévision parmi les familles américaines (50% environ d'entre elles avaient un poste en 1954). Mais le recours à la paléotélévision ne peut pas donner de contributions importantes à la compréhension de ces mêmes mouvements en Italie : elle y était moins répandue, avait beaucoup moins d'heures d'émission, avait une seule chaîne au début et au maximum deux, etc ; et de toute façon beaucoup d'autres stimulations (la contagion étrangère, p.ex) se sont manifestées. La néotélévision en revanche a constitué un changement rapide qui a concerné tous les aspects (heures d'émission, nombre de chaînes,etc), donc ont peut s'attendre à une ultérieure perte de prestige des adultes, mais dans une forme différente par rapport à la contestation. L' " effet Chomsky " peut intégrer l' " effet Meyrowitz ". Selon Chomsky, les médias qui vivent de publicité doivent " produire " (je dirais : attirer, sélectionner, former) leur public, qu'ils devront " vendre aux annonceurs ". Les grilles de la néo-télévision seront donc au service des exigences des ces derniers. Il ne s'agit certes pas d'une idée nouvelle, ni d'une idée de Chomsky seulement, qui l'emploie de façon apodictique dans sa polémique contre les media mainstream : elle est partagée entre autres par A. Pilati avec une intention décidemment apologétique (cf. §.8). Naturellement cet " effet " est encore moins déterminable de manière scientifique, car la formation concerne notamment en tant que telle la longue période, est le résultat de trop de facteurs croisés et ses conséquences sont difficilement prévisibles, sinon carrément imprévisibles. Néanmoins les attitudes des italiens envers la publicité et les marques ont changé depuis de façon si radicale (cf sondages Eurisko) que l'on ne peut que les mettre en relation avec le développement contemporain de la néotélévision. En outre la publicité adressée aux enfants vise à en faire des consommateurs autonomes par rapport à leurs parents.

Nel complesso panorama geopolitico dell’Europa moderna, Lucca rappresentò una realtà territoriale circoscritta e periferica, tendenzialmente pacifica e dedita ai commerci, che riuscì a conservare la propria indipendenza repubblicana fino al 1799. Le ricerche tentano di fornire un quadro ampio sul mondo del libro e la circolazione dei saperi nella città-Stato toscana tra XV e XVI secolo, riservando particolare attenzione alla produzione tipografica locale, di cui si ripercorrono le vicende storiche a partire dal duplice tentativo di introdurre la stampa da parte di Clemente da Padova (1472 e 1477), fra i primi stampatori di origine italiana, fino all’ascesa di Vincenzo Busdraghi (1548-1549), da più parti considerato il “principe degli stampatori lucchesi”. Di ciascuna edizione lucchese viene fornita una descrizione secondo i più recenti modelli di catalogazione bibliografica, sempre condotta su esemplari esaminati presso biblioteche e archivi, sia italiani che stranieri. La seconda sezione focalizza l’attenzione su alcuni episodi particolarmente significativi riguardanti la circolazione e il commercio librario, che interessò dapprima i codici manoscritti e poi i volumi a stampa, mettendo in evidenza i nomi di numerosi librai e cartolai attivi a Lucca e nelle zone limitrofe, emersi da inedite fonti notarili. Inoltre, viene proposta l’edizione dell’inventario post mortem della bottega pisana appartenuta al libraio Vincenzo Berretta, ma si considera anche la dispersione libraria attraverso l’analisi di maculature e frammenti, oltre alla circolazione di diversi prodotti editoriali, quali pronostici e messali, destinati a differenti categorie di lettori. Legata a doppio filo con le indagini sulle edizioni popolari di larga circolazione, la terza sezione offre un approfondimento sul Volto Santo, la taumaturgica reliquia conservata a Lucca nella Cattedrale di San Martino, di cui si analizza una serie di pubblicazioni quattro-cinquecentesche che riportano il racconto in prosa o in versi del leggendario arrivo in città. In ultimo, si propone una panoramica delle principali raccolte librarie presenti entro le mura lucchesi tra la seconda metà del Quattrocento e gli anni ’70 del secolo successivo, di cui è sopravvissuta una testimonianza coeva sotto forma di catalogo, inventario o lista di libri. Per l’eccezionale importanza nella storia delle biblioteche ecclesiastiche, viene fornito un elenco delle pubblicazioni a stampa appartenute al vescovo Felino Sandei, la cui raccolta si è conservata pressoché intatta dalla sua donazione al Capitolo della Cattedrale di Lucca nel 1503 fino ai nostri giorni.
In the complex geopolitical landscape of Early Modern Europe, Lucca was a limited and peripheral reality, inclined to be peaceful and dedicated to trade, which succeeded in preserving its republican independence until 1799. The research attempts to provide a broad picture of the world of books and the circulation of knowledge in the Tuscan city-state between the XV and XVI centuries, focusing particular attention on local printing production, whose historical events are traced from the double attempt to introduce the printing press by Clemens Patavinus (1472 and 1477), among the first printers of Italian origin, to the rise of Vincenzo Busdraghi (1548-1549), widely considered “the prince of Lucca printers”. Each Lucchese edition is presented according to the latest models of bibliographic description, always conducted on specimens examined in Italian and foreign libraries and archives. The second section focuses the attention on some particularly significant episodes concerning the circulation and book trade, which first involved manuscripts and then printed volumes, highlighting the names of many booksellers and stationers active in Lucca and neighboring areas, which have emerged from unpublished notarial sources. In addition, the transcription of the posthumous inventory of the Pisan workshop belonging to the bookseller Vincenzo Berretta is proposed, but book dispersion is also considered through the analysis of some fragments and binding waste, as well as the circulation of different publishing products, such as forecasts and missals, intended for different categories of readers. Closely linked to the popular printing production, the third section offers an indepth look at the Holy Face of Lucca, the thaumaturgical relic preserved in Lucca in the Cathedral of San Martino, of which is analyzed a series of XVth and XVIth century editions which tell the story of its legendary arrival in the city in prose or verse. Finally, an overview of the main book collections present within the walls of Lucca between the second half of the fifteenth century and the 1570s is presented, of which a coeval record has survived in the form of a catalog, inventory or list of books. Because of its exceptional importance in the history of ecclesiastical libraries, is provided a list of the printed publications belonging to Bishop Felino Sandei, whose collection has been preserved almost complete since its donation to the Chapter of the Cathedral in 1503 to the present day.

Este trabalho tem por objectivo principal compreender a razão de o Reino Unido não ter adoptado o euro. Seguimos dois objectivos secundários: perceber a atitude dos governos britânicos face à União Económica e Monetária e os efeitos das políticas da União Europeia sobre a convergência/divergência das economias inglesa e da Zona Euro. A metodologia usada para avaliar o objectivo principal consistiu na análise da intensidade comercial do Reino Unido com a Dinamarca, Suécia, Estados Unidos e Zona Euro no período 1988-2007. Concluímos que a intensidade comercial do Reino Unido é mais forte com a Zona Euro do que com os outros parceiros escolhidos, apesar de existir grande sincronia do ciclo económico britânico com o do Estados Unidos. Dado que a intensidade comercial do Reino Unido já é mais forte com a Zona Euro, a adesão do Reino Unido ao euro não suscita a expectativa de criação adicional de comércio e, nesse aspecto, a Zona Euro parece não satisfazer este critério da Teoria das Zonas Monetárias Óptimas. Neste contexto, as autoridades britânicas não têm motivação económica e é frágil a vontade política de se submeterem ao regime de funcionamento do Banco Central Europeu, que consideram lento e pouco transparente.
This work’s main goal is the understanding of why the United Kingdom has not changed to the Euro. Secondarily, we addressed the British governments’ attitude towards the Economic and Monetary Union and the European Union politics’ effects on convergence/divergence of the British and Euro zone economies. The methodology used to fulfil the main goal consisted in an analysis of the commercial intensity between the United Kingdom and each of the following countries — Denmark, Sweden, United States of America and the Euro zone — from 1988 to 2007. We concluded that the commercial intensity is higher between the United Kingdom and the Euro zone than with the other chosen countries, even though the British and U.S. economical cycles are in synchrony. Given the actual strong commercial intensity between England and the Euro zone, a possible membership of the United Kingdom to the Euro zone would not create the expectation for additional commerce. Thus, the Euro zone seems not to be an Optimal Currency Area. In this context, the British authorities have neither economical motivation nor political willingness to accept the European Central Bank governance, which they consider inefficient.

The hybrid nature of the building's program became the central idea behind the design of the project. The combination of office, retail and library funcions was an attempt to investigate the possibility of integrating a public amenity space directly within a private building. The implication of such a collision of uses was not only the potential for public cost savings and the promotion of public construction, but as well a possibility of the creation of a symbiotic relationship between these two forces. The private spaces of the building could make use of some of the public, while the public spaces could make use of some of the private. The project took on a diagramatic and absract nature early on, detatched architecturally somewhat from surrounding site conditions in order to investigate the possibilities of connecting and overlapping the building's public and private uses. An early series of diagrams and sectional sketches began to shape the building in its beginning. The three major elements of the program (office, library and retail) were initially separated vertically in space. The retail occupied the ground floor, the library the second, and the offices the final and third. However, the idea of interrelation of the spaces required a greater extent of overlapping and mixture. Thus, the strategy of a split-level shceme started to emerge. The three separations remained somewhat intact, however separated by intermittent split levels. These split levels contained spaces which could relate to either the floor directly above or below. The idea was that these 'shared' spaces could contain elements of the program which could be used by both library and retail, or by both office and library. The net result was a 'saving' of space, as well as a mixing of public and private functions. Yet, with the mixing of public and private uses came the architectural issue of building security. How could a public book enter and leave a retail store? How could a private office be contained from public access? Would the separate retail units truly relate with the library space? Were there more possibilies for more double uses? The library took on the role of both public amenity and private retail enterprise at this point in the project. The move seemed to satisfy both issues of security and interrelationship between public and private functions. The security system of the library would double as the cash desk; the library stacks would contain both borrowable books and commercial retail goods for consumption; the seating for the library would also provide for the in-house cafe-bar; library staff would also function as staff for the shared smaller offices on the second floor. In this sense, the combination of private and public functions not only reduced the need for excess (publically funded) space, but aslo presented the idea of a saving of maintenance and operational costs. The location of the building in Whistler village was done for two main reasons: the town, at present, is currently without a permanent library for a rapidly growing full-time population; and the town, as a resort municipality, relies heavily on its commercial activity in order to energize its main, public pedestrian outdoor mall. The specific site of the building was a point in the village which related both directly to this pedestrian mall as well as an adjacent shopping centre, intended for the vehicular traffic and use of the more full-time residents of Whistler Village. Here the full time residents coming in to use the library could perhaps discover its second commercial nature, while tourists may make use of the public use of the building while going in soley to shop. The building would then be a place where both full-time residents and incidental tourists could both come, interacting within the same building for an array of different reasons. Architecturally, the building was a modest success: the issue of security had been adressed and overlapping of private and public functions was explored in the building. However, the notion that a library would become a highly commercial retailer still seemed improbable; even in an age of decreasing government spending and reliance upon the private sector for public services, the difficulty in motivating a traditionally public sector into an entrepreneurially self-sustaining enterprise prevented the likelihood of its construction.
