Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAndreu Febrer’s version of Dante’s Divine Comedy: A biographical account of the translator, a study of the manuscript, an analysis of Febrer’s translation and an edition of Inferno, cantos I-XX Andreu Febrer (Vic, ca. 1374 - ?, 1441/44) completed his Catalan version of Dante’s Commedia on August 1, 1429. Febrer’s translation was the first one to keep Dante’s verse and rhyme-scheme (terza rima), as acknowledged by Íñigo López de Mendoza, marquis of Santillana, c. 1449. Febrer’s version must doubtless be considered a major work of medieval Catalan literature. In his edition of Febrer’s original poetry, Martí de Riquer (1951) included a first detailed study of Febrer’s life, which was supplemented by later scholarly contributions. A full profile of Febrer’s career was, however, still wanting, and Chapter 1 aims to provide it, after a careful examination afresh of all documents hitherto known and thorough archival research both in Catalonia and Sicily. As a result, Febrer’s relationship with king Alfonso IV, the Magnanimous, becomes now clearer, as is Febrer’s connection with Sicily. Some seventy documents have been analyzed, twelve of which have been included in Appendix 1. Chapter 2 deals with the reception of Febrer’s translation: lost manuscripts, modern editions and critical appraisal of Febrer’s rendering are taken into account. Riquer’s hypothesis that Febrer should have offered his version to king Alfonso is substantiated. Chapter 3 includes the first thorough description of MS El Escorial, L.II.18, the only extant witness to Febrer’s translation. This description is supplemented by thirty plates (Appendix 3). The codicological analysis yields several interesting results: two initial folios (which might have contained a dedication) are missing; the codex can be dated to the second half of the fifteenth century; it was corrected at two separate stages: first, by the same scribe who copied the manuscript, and subsequently by another hand who revised the text against a further manuscript copy of Febrer’s version. Chapter 4 is devoted to textual criticism, that is, the manner in which Febrer’s text should be established, taking into account both corrections, particularly the second one. Chapter 5 focuses on the textual relationship between Febrer’s version and the Italian original of his translation. Even though a copy of Febrer’s source text has not been identified, a complete analysis of all variant readings of Dante’s Commedia (recorded by Moore 1889 and Petrocchi 1966) allows for many corrections of the Catalan text and accounts for many passages of Febrer’s version which may otherwise seem mistaken. Chapter 6 aims at describing Febrer’s translation technique in a practical way. Avoiding any value judgements, this chapter shows how Febrer was fully aware that his main criterion was to follow closely Dante’s verse and rhyme whenever possible. Following the study, a critical edition of the first twenty cantos of Febrer’s translation (Inf. I-XX) is provided. The Catalan text is established taking into account both the corrections recorded on the El Escorial MS (Chapter 4) and textual variants within the transmission of the Italian text (Chapter 5). The Catalan text is printed facing the Italian as in Petrocchi’s edition; an apparatus of Italian variant readings (from some forty-odd manuscripts) helps to account for many passages in which Febrer’s text differs from Petrocchi’s. This new edition, however partial, aims at establishing a more accurate text than the previous one (Gallina 1974-88): by correcting some transcription mistakes, by introducing emmendationes in the light of textual variatio and, above all, by accounting in detail for the translator’s practice. What results from this approach is a text far more regular (in terms of scansion and rhyme) than before, and the profile of a highly crafted translator.
