Objective: In an effort to break away from the stale classifications of community college students that stem from the hegemonic perspective of previous literature, this work utilizes the perceptions of community college practitioners to demonstrate new ways of understanding the identities of community college students. Method: By utilizing Gee’s identity theory and Grillo’s theory of intersectionality, we analyze interviews with community college practitioners from three different community colleges on the West coast of the United States to answer these questions: What identities (i.e., natural, institutional, and discursive) do faculty and administrators recognize in community college students? In what ways do community college faculty and administrators describe and conceptualize community college students? Findings: First, community college student identities are intricate and have changed with time; there are two different institutional views held by organizational members—the educational view and the managerial view—which both shape the construction of student identities and play a prominent role in determining which students are disadvantaged. Second, organizational members constructed meanings of student achievement and value (i.e., attributes or outcomes of the ideal student, or what policy makers and institutions refer to as success) according to organizational priorities and perspectives. Conclusion: This investigation encapsulates and elucidates the portrayals and understandings of community college students held by community college administrators and faculty as a means to acknowledge the diverse identities among these students. Scholars and practitioners are encouraged to acknowledge the polymorphic identities of this diverse population to improve scholarship and practice.

Over the past three decades, colleges have experienced revolutionary changes, and the enrollment revolution has had a particularly profound impact on 2-year colleges. We describe the new kinds of students who are entering college today and the ways that colleges have begun to adapt. Then, analyzing interviews with students and administrators and a survey of nearly 4,400 students in 14 two-year colleges, we examine four questions: (1) Do students have serious information problems, and are college procedures ever responsible? (2) How can college structures improve students’ information and planning? (3) Do colleges with alternative structures affect student information and confidence? (4) Do alternative college structures matter, net of student attributes ? The results suggest new approaches to addressing the information needs of college students, which may have important implications for their confidence and success. The evidence in this study suggests that structured programs, structured advising, and structured peer supports should be added to the menu of college policy alternatives that deserve further consideration.

This paper adopts the method of synergetic theory fused with a random matrix to conduct in-depth research and analysis on the innovation and entrepreneurship education of college students, discusses the existing problems, and develops ways of college students’ entrepreneurship education from the perspective of synergetic students. The development history of entrepreneurship education of college students is explained, the development of entrepreneurship education in case institutions is introduced and the synergistic subjects of college students’ entrepreneurship education are introduced, and the necessity of carrying out college students’ entrepreneurship education is analyzed. The mechanism of cooperation mechanism of total budget management is studied from three perspectives of organizational cooperation, information cooperation, and resource cooperation respectively. From the perspective of internal and external collaborative training platforms, the idea of improving college students’ entrepreneurship education is put forward. Among them, colleges, teachers, and college students form an internal system for the development of entrepreneurship education, and the three are synergistically dependent on each other and influence each other. Then, the problems in entrepreneurship education are analyzed, including weak teachers in entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities, systematic and professional entrepreneurship education to be improved, insufficient internal drive-in entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities, and insufficient initiative of college students to participate in entrepreneurship education. Finally, the ways to solve the existing dilemmas of entrepreneurship education of college students from the perspective of synergism are proposed, including improving the initiative of college students and the atmosphere of social and cultural environment, constructing internal and external platforms for entrepreneurship education of college students, and evaluating and giving feedback to entrepreneurship education of college students so that colleges and universities can better promote and carry out entrepreneurship education.

ABSTRACT EXPLORING COLLEGE READINESS: SELF-PERCEPTIONS OF EARLY COLLEGE STUDENTS by Kim R. Ramsey-White Research shows that too many students are graduating from high school ill-prepared to be successful in the postsecondary environment. This study examined the high school experiences of dual-enrollment students who participated in an Early College High School, and how the students perceived their high school experiences in preparing them for college. Additionally the study sought to understand the role that social capital played in the students’ preparation for college. In-depth interviews with 13 African American students, some of whom were first-generation college attendees, were used to illuminate the student voice in an effort to learn how early college practices and strategies were beneficial and/or detrimental to their preparation for college. Data from the study were analyzed using a college readiness framework developed by David Conley (2007) which focuses on four dimensions of college readiness: (1) Key cognitive strategies, (2) academic content, (3) academic skills and behavior, and (4) contextual skills and awareness. Findings from the study indicate that the students’ Early College High School experiences increased their confidence as college students (key cognitive strategies), taught them the benefits of time management and working in study groups (academic skills and behavior), and provided meaningful relationships and social networks that allowed them to navigate the college application and financial aid processes (contextual skills and awareness). The students also expressed concern that there was very limited alignment between the high school academic courses and expectations and those in the postsecondary institutions they attended. The results of the study contribute to the scholarship on the Early College model.

College students are at high risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS due to the high frequency of unprotected sexual activity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2003). Condom use research among college aged youth has primarily concentrated on individual decision making processes with some recent focus on the impact of peer norms. To further understand college students? choices regarding sexual risk behavior, the current research examines the influence of the parent-college student relationship on college students? decisions about condom use. Building on previous research in sexual risk and alcohol use literature, the current study examines the role of parent-young adult relationship variables (i.e. facilitation of independence, and affective quality) on condom use. Parental influence has been an important predictor in other areas of college student life but has not been examined in the college student sexual risk literature. Results and implications for future studies are discussed.

Abstract Community colleges need more avenues for undergraduate research during their first two years in higher education but face challenges to building robust research namely the limited time frame students are at a community college and the limited resources for research. To maximize the limited resources and the educational experience for the students, multidisciplinary projects within the community college environment provide both engineering and science students with research opportunities that fit the schedule of a working student, allow interaction between disciplines, provide team-based environments, and foster life-long learning. This paper describes 1) a multidisciplinary project for honor chemistry and engineering students; introduction to engineering students and engineering graphics students in the development of a venipuncture practice arm for nursing students practicing venipuncture techniques in the simulation lab. 2) the institutional supports that promote the development of collaborative and multidisciplinary research projects and 3) recommendations for other community colleges interested in developing multidisciplinary research opportunities throughout their engineering and science curriculums.

Tackling difficulties related to student participation in the college classroom is central on the learning process. In this action-research study, we designed and implemented an action plan to boost participation on the grounds of (1) explaining the objectives and procedures for each activity to students; (2) requesting student participation by name; (3) giving them time to reflect before participating; and (4) requesting that students who are not paying attention participate. A survey was used in order to assess students' perceptions of the action plan. The survey included 10 items (1-4 Likert scale). A total of 103 students completed the survey. The scores’ mean was 3.19, demonstrating a positive student perception of the action plan. The statements with the highest average scores were: “Teacher allows time for reflection after posing a question” and “Teacher addresses specific students by name.” The instructors recorded their perceptions into writing, providing opinions on the development of the action plan. These teachers' comments were summarized into categories. In conclusion, we considered that the action plan helped to improve student participation, and we believe that in order to obtain sufficient participation we have to attain a classroom environment that favors motivation, confidence and respect for students.

Annotation:
On college campuses today, student services staff (administrators and support staff) and faculty members are not only interacting with students but also with their parents. College employee interactions with prospective students and their parents may be common during information sessions and open houses. However, outside of the recruitment season, less is known about the experiences of student affairs staff and faculty who interact with parents. Through semi-structured interviews, this study examined employees’ interactions with parents of students at four colleges of applied arts and technology in Ontario, Canada. Of the interviewees, nine faculty members and 11 student affairs staff (non-academic employees) described interacting with parents. The analysis of the interviews revealed several themes. These included college employees’ interactions with parents regarding students’ program choice and educational decision making, academic challenges, and support services. Professional practices that serve parents (and other supporters) could contribute to institutional goals, including post-secondary student persistence. This study’s research findings may inform student affairs practice and inspire new ways to support students’ college journeys in cooperation with parents and family members.
