Abstract Six face- and back-mounted chromogenic print samples (each 120 × 160 cm) and one pre-damaged original photograph (120 × 120 cm) were exposed to alternating temperature conditions. Cold storage was set at 8 °C with a slightly fluctuating relative humidity at an average of 55 % in a cooling chamber; room temperature storage occurred at 19 to 27 °C depending on the prevailing weather conditions. The samples were exposed alternatingly to these setups in a 24-hour rotation over five weeks to assess the effect of strong and rapid fluctuations on the stability of the composite. After about one week under the extreme, stress-intensive testing conditions, irreversible deformation, and a local loss of translucency occurred. Further local delamination was observed on the pre-damaged original artwork. Exceeding the dew point temperature, which occurred in our experimental setup and should be avoided, resulted in condensation on the acrylic surface and led to extensive streaks and, in combination with the electrostatic charge, to extreme dust deposits. These findings suggest that cold storage cannot be recommended for face- and back-mounted chromogenic prints.

Abstract: In India, 16 % of the total produce that is being wasted every year is horticultural produce. The underlying cause of post-harvest loss in the country is the lack of infrastructure for short-term storage, particularly at the farm level, concentration of cold storage in some states, lack of trained staff to operate cold storage systems, as well as the lack of intermediate processing in the production catchments. In the country, there is a 90% deficit of cold storage facilities. This shortage is compounded by misallocation. The cold storages are concentrated in a few states while vast expanses of the nation are left underserved. The nation’s 60% cold storages are located in just 4 states – Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal and Punjab. Out of the 30.11 million metric tonnes of cold storage facility provided by the 6,300 cold chain warehouses in the country, Tamil Nadu has access to only 0.0239. In India, milk, meat and poultry are prioritized for cold chain transport because they are highly perishable; meaning a lack of temperature-controlled transit would cause a near absence of these products in the market. Consequently, when horticultural produce is shipped, it is often sent in unrefrigerated, overstocked trucks that either rot the food in transit or damage it severely due to poor packaging. Furthermore, the Indian government estimates that 80-90% of the remaining cold storage in the country is used to house potatoes leaving disproportionate hordes of other perishable foods like fresh fruits unguarded.

Agriculture is the leading occupation for the people of the Jharkhand. State has potential to produce horticulture product and this type of product like fruits and vegetables need cold storage industry because It plays a significant role for the agricultural sector where various items such as Vegetables, fruits and meat etc.is stored where temperature is maintained, so as to protect them from getting spoiled and there by extend their preservation period with the help of precision instruments. Cold storages are an acute technology to keep perishable items safe. It is also an industry to increase revenue by protecting and reducing the wastage of fruits & vegetables. Cold storage is a place where an item is needed can be taken anytime and can be made available to consumers very easily. Due to non-availability of space in the existing cold storage units, farmers are facing hardships to store their produced. The purpose of the study to analyze the current scenario of cold storage capacity in Jharkhand. It has been seen that there is a wide gap in availability of cold storages and agriculture produce to the markets. There are only 25 storage which has 80625MT capacity in Jharkhand. So, the urgent need for affordable, reliable, and sustainable expansion of cold storage infrastructure is crucial to boost agriculture's economic contribution. Farmers need the right financing and storage for the right price, enabling them to directly connect with multiple markets and maximize socio-economic impact.

Background. L-asparaginase is effective in treating canine and feline lymphoma, however chemotherapy poses a significant financial cost to veterinary clients, limiting therapy for many pets. Single dose vials result in significant drug wastage, and drug shortages limit consistent availability for pets.Hypothesis.E. coli-derived asparaginase retains enzymatic and antineoplastic activity in canine and feline lymphoma cells after cold storage.Methods.E. coli-derived asparaginase was cold-stored: refrigeration (7–14 days) and freezing (14 days–six months, one to three freeze/thaw cycles). Enzymatic activity of asparaginase was measured via a modified asparagine assay. Effects of cold-stored asparaginase on cell proliferation and cytotoxicity were measured in feline (MYA-1, F1B) and canine (17–71, OSW) lymphoma cells.Results. Cold-storedE. coli-derived asparaginase retains antineoplastic activity in all four cell lines tested. Cold-storedE. coli-derived L-asparaginase depletes asparagine and retains enzymatic activity. Duration of refrigeration, duration of freezing, and number of freeze-thaw cycles have minimal effect on asparaginase enzyme activity. Conclusions and Clinical Importance. This study establishes a scientific basis for long-term cold storage of reconstitutedE. coli-derived asparaginase that may result in better utilization of limited drug resources and improve financial feasibility ofE. coli-derived asparaginase as a therapeutic option for pets with lymphoma.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The deficiency in post-harvest infrastructure leads to loss of agricultural produce which in turn affects farmer’s income and food security. So, there is a need to improve post-harvest infrastructure in the country. Potato is a major horticultural crop requiring cold storage facility. This study was carried out for Bihar state of India, which has the least ratio of storage capacity to potato production in comparison to other states. An approach has been developed to identify the suitable locations for cold storages using geospatial technology to increase accessibility to cold storage facilities. Temporal variations in vegetation profiles were used to generate crop maps and from this crop area proportions were calculated at village level. These proportions were used to identify significant village clusters contributing to horticulture production. From this priority villages were identified. These priority villages were assigned to nearest major settlement which will be the sites for positioning new cold storage facility. The approach developed in this study has identified 63 locations in 17 districts for developing new cold storage facility. The proposed new locations for cold storages will reduce the distance to nearest cold storage for 14244 villages and this reduction in distance will be more than 8 kms for 9774 villages. Thus, the study validated the role of Remote Sensing and GIS for post-harvest infrastructure planning.</p>

<span>Nowadays Cold storage has been playing an important role in preserving the perishable food products like fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, and meat etc. The major problem of cold storage is unwanted energy transmission during the operation. It is necessary to maintain the constant temperature during storing the products. There are different kinds of energy loss happening during the operation. One of the major causes is cold air leaking from the inside of the cold room to outside. It is due to poor insulation and improper maintenance of cold storage. It is very difficult to identify the exact location of the leak by the naked eye. In this research work, the cold storage was inspected with the thermal imaging system. Thermal cameras are highly sensitive to temperature and it can detect the variation of temperature ranging from 0.1°C. The measured temperatures are further converted into a colour based pattern. It is known as thermogram. These colour-based thermal patterns are further processed for identifying energy transmission location. It is done by applying various image processing methods such as histogram equalization, diffusion error, otsu thresholding and morphologic function. These techniques were applied to images of cold storages and exact cold air transmission locations were identified.</span>

Freshness and quality of fruits and vegetables as well as product saleable weight depend on heat and moisture transfer rate during air-cooling in the cool storages. The main objective of this study was to evaluate and develop a validated CFD model for predicting the temperature and velocity fields in a cold storage. In this study the air temperature, velocity, and non-uniform airflow in cold storage have been studied experimentally and numerically. Experimental and numerical models were employed to investigate cold storage's airflow field, flow pattern, and temperature field. The temperature and the velocity fields were measured in the cold storage filled with two potato pallets by using a hot wire anemometer and thermocouple with a programmable data logger computer. The experimental data was recorded at 60 points of temperature, and 27 points of velocity from three levels; high, middle, and bottom. Numerically the SB (Solid Block) technique was used to assess four turbulence models (Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, Standard k-ω, and SST k-ω) to compare with the experimental results for validation. The results of the validation were agreed with the experimental. The comparisons between the numerical results and experimental results revealed that the Shear Stress Transport (SST k-ω) model shows the best performance with the smallest absolute errors for temperature and velocity respectively. As well as the results revealed that the bottom and the top of the room was subjected to fresher and cooler air with relatively higher velocity. According to the study validation and finding, using the SST k-ω model is the best model for investigation in a cold storage, and for the improvement and evaluation of more complex cold storage, to achieve the balance distributions of air velocity, air temperature, and other heat transfer phenomena.

Abstract There is not yet a recognized unified energy consumption assessment and grading method on cold storage. It is not conducive to cold storage operation energy-saving management. By establishing the heat balance model of the cold storage, the energy consumption composition of the cold storage is analyzed, and then the causal diagram analysis method is used to determine the influencing factors of the energy consumption of the cold storage, and the quantitative indicators to measure the energy consumption of the cold storage are proposed. Based on the classification of energy consumption assessment methods for cold storage, five typical energy consumption assessment methods for cold storage are compared and analyzed from five aspects of quantification, evaluation index, energy efficiency level, application scope and shortcomings. It is found that to establish an energy efficiency level identification evaluation standard for cold storage recognized by the public, two conditions must be met: the appropriate energy consumption assessment method considering the differentiation of cold storage; establishment of a large database of cold storage energy consumption information. Accordingly, the ways and measures for energy saving of cold storage are proposed.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the tolerance of fruits of different banana cultivars to low temperature storages. Fruits of the cultivars Nanicão (AAA), Prata (AAB), Vitória (AAAB), Maçã (AAB) and Caipira (AAA) were used. Clusters of three fruits were kept in cold storage for 7, 14 and 21 days, with average temperature of 10.53±0.37°C and relative humidity of 85%. Subsequently, the clusters were transferred to temperatures of 22±0.39°C and evaluated for 16 days. The fruits of all cultivars remained green after 21 days of storage at 10.53±0.37°C. Fruits of the cultivar Nanicão did not completely ripened after transferred to the 22°C storage, when stored for 7 days at low temperature. These fruits were firmer, with green peel and low soluble solids and titratable acidity. The fruits of all cultivars complete the ripening when transferred to room temperature after 21 days of cold storage. Chilling injuries increased with cold storage time in all cultivars. The cultivars Nanicão, Caipira and Maçã had more symptoms of chilling injury, while Prata and Vitória were more tolerant to the cold storage (10.53°C) for up to 21 days, showing normal ripening after transferred to the 22±0.39°C storage.

Ice plates, widely used in food cold chain refrigeration transportation, involve challenges such as long cold storage time and low efficiency in use. This study establishes a mathematical model for ice plate cold storage and release. It analyzes the influence of fin setting position, distribution, and size on the cold storage and release characteristics of non-uniform fins having diverse sizes and spacing on the inner and outer surfaces of the ice plate. Results show that compared to finless ice plates, plates with inner or outer fins can reduce the cold storage and release time, accelerate the charging and discharging efficiency of the cold storage equipment, and potentially save time. Cold storage and release time savings of up to 17.5% and 19.6%, respectively, were attained using outer fins. Driven by natural convection inside the finned ice plate, cold storage proceeds from top to bottom, while cold release proceeds from bottom to top. For inner fins, the distribution has a higher impact on the cold storage and release speed than the size. For outer fins, both the distribution and size equally affect the cold storage and release speed. The smaller the reference spacing between the outer fins, the faster the cooling storage, but the slower the cold release. The larger the reference area, the faster the cooling storage, but the slower the cold release. Thus, when designing ice plate products, the distribution and the size of fins should be selected based on prior consideration of storage or release speed. This study provides a theoretical basis and design guidance for the design of ice plate products, especially for refrigerated transportation applications.

The survey revealed that 55.2% growers store their potatoes in the cold storages. Due to the proximity of cold storages (within 1-10 km from the home/field) majority potato growers of Munshiganj (82%), Dinajpur-Thakurgaon (81%) and Joypurhat (70%) stored in cold storages. On the other hand, majority growers of Barisal-Patuakhali (88%) and Jamalpur-Sherpur (73%) could not store due to lack or long distance of cold storages. The growers disposed up their cold stored potatoes mainly by selling to local paikers at cold storage gate or by using as seed. While considering all areas, 56.0 % farmers stored potatoes at home in the studied areas. Majority farmers in Dinajpur-Thakurgaon (91%), Joypurhat (98%) and Jamalpur-Sherpur (65.0%) areas stored potato at home. Farmers of these areas stored upto 150 days at home because of cultivation of local varieties. In practical work, implementation of the technology of aquifer thermal energy storage(ATES) is divided into energy storage phase and energy utilization phase. Sufficient cold/warm water is stored in energy storage phase, and the stored cold/warm water is consumed in energy utilization phase, so as to achieve the purpose of cooling or heating. In this paper, taking Sanhejian Coal Mine as an example, we analyze the effect of cold energy storage in multi-wells by analyzing the volume change of cold water body within different temperature ranges in different periods. Through the analysis of volume change of cold water body, it can prove in the cooling process, all of the 2-5°C cold water body is consumed, and then the 5-10°C cold water body is consumed. The volume of 10-15°C cold water body is stable, because with the consumption of colder water, part of low temperature water body changes into high temperature water body, adding the 10-15°C cold water body in aquifers. And in condition 1, there are almost the same volume of 2-5°C, 2-10°C and 2-15 °C cold water in the four cold energy storage wells. The running of 1-1’ wells, 2-2’ wells, 3-3’ wells and 4-4’ wells by sequence, all of the 2-5°C cold water body is consumed, and the 5-10°C cold water body is the mainly cold water body for cooling, and the consumption of 10-15°C cold water body is small. It proves that the cooling wells normally run, and the cold water body for cooling is sufficient, which can meet the need of cooling.

Fermentation of milk enhances its nutritional and biological activity through the improvement of the bioavailability of nutrients and the production of bioactive compounds. Coconut milk was fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ngue16. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fermentation and cold storage for 28 days on physicochemical characteristics, shelf life, and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of coconut milk as well as its proximate and chemical compositions. The pH of fermented milk decreased from 4.26 to 3.92 on the 28th day during cold storage. The viable cell count of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermented coconut milk was significantly increased during fermentation and cold storage period (1 to 14 days), reaching 6.4 × 108 CFU/mL, and then decreased significantly after 14 days to 1.6 × 108 CFU/mL at 28 days. Yeast and molds in fermented coconut milk were only detected on the 21st and 28th days of cold storage, which ranged from 1.7 × 102 to 1.2 × 104 CFU/mL, respectively. However, the growth of coliforms and E. coli was observed on the 14th until the 28th day of cold storage. The fermented coconut milk demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Cronobacter sakazakii, Bacillus cereus, and Salmonella typhimurium compared to fresh coconut milk. Fermented coconut milk had the greatest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values, with 67.1% and 61.961 mmol/g at day 14 of cold storage, respectively. Forty metabolites were detected in fermented and pasteurized coconut milk by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) metabolomics. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed clear difference between the fermented and pasteurized coconut milk as well as the studied cold storage days. The metabolites responsible for this variation were ethanol, valine, GABA, arginine, lactic acid, acetoin, alanine, phenylalanine, acetic acid, methionine, acetone, pyruvate, succinic acid, malic acid, tryptophan, uridine, uracil, and cytosin, which were higher in fermented coconut milk. However, sugars and other identified compounds were higher in fresh coconut milk. The findings of this study show that fermentation of coconut milk with L. plantarum ngue16 had high potential benefits to extending its shelf life and improved biological activities as well as other beneficial nutrients.

Abstract Cold storage technology can realize energy storage and release according to demand and balance the power grid by “shifting peak and filling valley”. Ice cold storage system has the outstanding advantages of large cold storage density and simple system, and is the frontier direction of current cold storage technology research and application. However, there are some problems such as low phase transition temperature of cold storage medium and high energy consumption under cold storage condition. The research shows that magnetic field can increase the freezing point of water and aqueous solution by about 3.0-5.0K, which is beneficial to further increase the economic benefit and save energy in refrigeration condition based on the refrigeration demand.

Cryogenic Energy Storage (CES) systems are able to improve the stability of electrical grids with large shares of intermittent power plants. In CES systems, excess electrical energy can be used in the liquefaction of cryogenic fluids, which may be stored in large cryogenic vessels for long periods of time. When the demand for electricity is high, work is recovered from the cryogen during a power cycle using ambient or waste heat as an upper heat source. Most research is focused on liquid air energy storage (LAES). However, natural gas can also be a promising working fluid for the CES system. This paper presents a natural gas-based CES system, coupled with a low temperature packed bed cold storage unit. The cold, which is stored at a low temperature level, can be used to increase the efficiency of the cryogenic liquefiers. The model for the packed bed in a high grade cold storage unit was implemented and then compared with the experimental data. The impact of cold recycling on the liquefaction yield and efficiency of the cryogenic energy storage system was investigated

The purpose of this study was to find out the function of cold storage in stabilizing fish prices in Ambon City, analyzing optimal production levels of various types of dominant fish, and analyzing the level of efficiency of utilization of cold storage and auxiliary machinery. This study uses the survey method. Primary data collection through questionnaires is built empirically while secondary data is obtained from several agencies related to this study. The research sample was drawn by exhausting sampling, amounting to 6 cold storage units in Ambon City. The role of cold storage to stabilize fish prices was analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach, while the quantitative techniques used included analysis of optimization of cold storage production with linear programming and analysis of the efficiency of utilization of cold storage. The results of the study show that cold storage has not played a role properly to stabilize fish prices in Ambon City. To achieve optimal use of production factors, the cold storage management needs to reduce the raw material by 24,915.9 kg / month; 7 HOK / month workforce; cold storage storage space capacity of 2.09 kg / month; and demand for flying fish 1,402.6 kg / month, while the use of production factors efficiently (fully utulized) is the capacity of the freezing machine, demand for tuna, skipjack, and cob. The level of technical efficiency of the utilization of cold storage facilities is reached, the total use of installed capacity must be proportional to the capacity used.

In this paper, taking Sanhejian Coal Mine as an example, we analyze the effect of cold energy storage in single-well by analyzing the volume change of cold water body within different temperature ranges. Through the analysis of volume change of cold water body, it can prove that with the same irrigation temperature, the increase of irrigation flow makes the volume and percentage of cold water body in aquifer within different temperature ranges. And the impact on the cold water of 2-5°C is more obvious. With the same irrigation flow, both the cold water body and its percentage of 2-10°C in the condition of 2°C irrigation temperature are more than those in the condition of 5°C. The increase of irrigation flow and the decrease of irrigation temperature are beneficial to cold energy storage, and the effect of cold energy storage of the condition 3 (100m3/h irrigation flow and 2°C irrigation temperature) is the best in these four conditions.

The effect of extended cold or cold-acid storage ofEscherichia coli O157:H7 on subsequent acid tolerance, freeze-thaw survival, heat tolerance, and virulence factor (Shiga toxin, intimin, and hemolysin) expression was determined. ThreeE. coli O157:H7 strains were stressed at 4°C in TSB or pH 5.5 TSB for 4 weeks. The acid (TSB [pH 2.0] or simulated gastric fluid [pH 1.5]) tolerance, freeze-thaw (−20°C to 21°C) survival, and heat (56°C) tolerance of stressed cells were compared with those of control cells. The β-galactosidase activities of stressed and control cells containing a lacZ gene fusion in the stx2, eaeA, or hlyA gene were determined following stress in TSB or pH 5.5 TSB at 37°C and in the exponential and stationary phases. Cold and cold-acid stresses decreased acid tolerance (P &lt; 0.05), with a larger decrease in acid tolerance being observed after cold stress than after cold-acid stress (P &lt; 0.05). Cold stress increased freeze-thaw survival for all three strains (P &lt; 0.05). Prior cold or cold-acid stress had no effect on virulence factor production (P &gt; 0.05), although growth in acidic media (pH 5.5) enhanced eaeA and hlyA expression (P &lt; 0.05). These results indicate that the prolonged storage ofE. coli O157: H7 at 4°C has substantial effects on freeze-thaw tolerance but does not affect subsequent virulence gene expression.

Pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] has significant potential as a new fruit crop. During ripening, loss of firmness is extremely rapid, and this trait may be the biggest obstacle to the development of a broader market. Cold storage of pawpaw fruit seems limited to 4 weeks at 4 °C, though fruit softening merely slows during storage. A study of several cultivars with commercial appeal has shown that none have superior cold storage life. Extending the cold storage beyond 4 weeks resulted in increasing loss of fruit firmness, poor poststorage ripening, and development of quality traits, and many fruit exhibiting flesh and peel discoloration. Cold storage duration affected fruit volatile production. By 4 weeks of cold storage, ethyl hexanoate and ethyl octanoate were the major volatiles produced, replacing methyl hexanoate, which was the major volatile produced by ripe fruit after harvest. By 8 weeks of cold storage, volatile ester production was generally low and ethyl hexanoate became the only major volatile. This loss of volatile production was accompanied by a decrease in alcohol acetyl transferase activity. Also, during cold storage, there was an increase in total phenolic content, lipid peroxidation products, and polyphenol oxidase activity. These changes may contribute to the black discoloration that developed in fruit cold-stored for 8 weeks or more. It is apparent that cold storage alone may not be sufficient to extend the storage life of most, if not all, current pawpaw cultivars beyond 4 weeks.

Cold storage is a simple method for storing and transporting tissues and organs. The reliability of this method for maintaining structure and function of marsupial ovarian tissue was assessed using histological techniques and follicle culture. Tammar wallaby ovaries were placed in cold storage (phosphate-buffered saline at 4°C) for 24 or 48 h. Although necrotic changes were evident in the germinal epithelium, cortex and interstitial tissue after cold storage, there was little evidence of necrotic changes in ovarian follicles and oocytes appeared normal. Secondary follicles isolated from ovarian tissue after cold storage grew by a similar amount to non-stored follicles when cultured for 4 days in vitro, but no follicles from any group developed to tertiary follicles. Cold storage for up to 24 h had little obvious effect on the structure of ovarian tissue and follicles isolated from this tissue maintained their structure during culture. However, degeneration in culture increased with storage time and was significantly higher after cold storage for 48 h. As demonstrated in the tammar wallaby, cold storage has potential as a method for storage and transport of marsupial ovaries up to 24 h.

With an abundance of fishery products in Indonesian waters, it must be supported by adequate facilities, one of which is the availability of cold storage, which maintains the quality of fishery products. In this study, the design of the cold storage was carried out by measuring the size of the cold storage and using the calculation of the cooling load, the calculation of cooling capacity, the calculation of the P-h diagram, and the cost estimate. The results of this study include cold storage design dimensions of 420 m3 with a long length and tall of 15×7×4 m3 made from insulation materials of polyurethane, stainless steel, and plaster. The cooling load data for the cold storage, when the product (tuna) is cooled and filled, is 3,707,444.3 kJ every 24 hours. A ton of refrigeration absorbs 12,660 kJ per 24 hours, equaling 16.3 tons of required refrigeration capacity. Meanwhile, under normal operating conditions, the total cooling load is 759,427.588 kJ per 24 hours. After calculating the cooling load, it was discovered that the initial design, which only had a capacity of 10 tons during the refrigeration process, could accommodate a cooling capacity of up to 16.3 tons. The cooling capacity of cold storage is 23.9 kW or 81.400 Btu/h. P-h diagram calculation of compressor cooling load is 0.7 kW, and the cooling load total from the evaporator to keep air room temperature of cold storage 0 °C is 0.43 kW. In this paper, the design and development of a solar powered cold storage for agricultural purposes being presented. The final year project work undertaken by us involves a ground-breaking advancement in cold storage technology that combines portability and flexibility with solar energy's efficiency. The need for dependable and long-lasting cold storage solutions is growing in the modern world, particularly in isolated and off-grid locations. Traditional cold storage systems are immobile and frequently rely on non-renewable energy sources. Effective cooling mechanisms, real-time monitoring, and control via IoT integration, and a user-friendly interface are some of this revolutionary solution's standout characteristics. The Solar Hybrid Cold Storage system might have a significant influence on sectors including agriculture, healthcare, and disaster assistance where dependable cold storage is essential for protecting perishable goods, medications, and emergency supplies. The fusion of solar power with portability opens new avenues for cold storage accessibility in places with poor infrastructure, while simultaneously lowering operational costs and carbon footprints. The Solar Hybrid Cold Storage with Portability is the subject of this abstract, which encourages deeper investigation into its technological, financial, and environmental elements while highlighting its potential to fundamentally alter how we think about cold storage in a mobile and sustainable way. Warm ischemia (WI) produces a significant deleterious effect in potential kidney grafts. Hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) seems to improve immediate graft function after transplant. Our aim was to analyze the effect of short pretransplant periods of pulsatile HMP on histology and renal injury in warm-ischemic kidneys. Twelve minipigs were used. WI was achieved in the right kidney by applying a vascular clamp for 45 min. After nephrectomy, autotransplant was performed following one of two strategies: cold storage of the kidneys or cold storage combined with perfusion in pulsatile HMP. The graft was removed early to study renal morphology, inflammation (fibrosis), and apoptosis. Proinflammatory activity and fibrosis were less pronounced after cold storage of the kidneys with HMP than after cold storage only. The use of HMP also decreased apoptosis compared with cold storage only. The detrimental effects on cells of an initial and prolonged period of WI seem to improve with a preservation protocol that includes a short period of pulsatile HMP after cold storage and immediately before the transplant, in comparison with cold storage only.

We assessed the effects of cold storage on nine water-soluble vitamins in 7 cultivars of Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit) using high-performance liquid chromatography. Samples were collected at three time points during cold storage: one day, 30 days, and when edible. We found that vitamin C in most cultivars was raised with cold storage, but there was no consistent increased or decreased trend for other water-soluble vitamins across cultivars in storage. After one day of cold storage, vitamins B1 and B2 were the most prevalent vitamins in Control (wild) fruit, while vitamins B5 and B6 were most prevalent in the Hongyang and Qihong cultivars. However, B12 was the most prevalent vitamin in the Qihong cultivar after 30 days of cold storage. Vitamins B3, B7, B9, and C were detected at the edible time point in Huayou, Hongyang, Jinnong-2, and Control fruit. Vitamin contents varied significantly among cultivars of kiwifruit following different durations of cold storage. Out of the three durations tested, a period of 30 days in cold storage was the most suitable for the absorption of water-soluble vitamins by A. chinensis.

Our previous research has demonstrated preventive effects of foliar sprays of growth regulators containing GA4+7 (ProVide or Promalin) on cold storage-induced leaf yellowing and abscission in `Stargazer' hybrid lilies. Further research was conducted to investigate the effective concentrations of Promalin and appropriate timing of promalin sprays. Lilies at “puffy bud” stage were sprayed with promalin at concentrations of 10, 25, 50 or 100 ppm (each GA4+7 and BA) just before placing them at 4 °C for 2 weeks in darkness. Promalin concentrations of 25 ppm or above completely prevented cold storage-induced leaf yellowing occurring during the poststorage evaluation phase in a simulated consumer environment, whereas 10 ppm sprays only partially prevented it. Foliar spray of Promalin (100 ppm each GA4+7 and BA) just before storage at 4 °C for 2 weeks was compared with spraying 2 or 4 weeks before cold storage. While spraying 2 weeks before storage prevented leaf yellowing to the same extent observed in plants sprayed just before cold storage, spraying 4 weeks before storage had very little preventive effect on leaf yellowing. To investigate the effectiveness of promalin sprays with different cold storage durations, puffy-bud stage plants were stored at 4 °C for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 weeks in darkness with or without promalin sprays (100 ppm each GA4+7 and BA) before storage. Longer cold storage durations increased the severity of leaf yellowing occurring during poststorage phase. Although promalin was able to prevent leaf yellowing completely up to 2 weeks of cold storage, beyond 3 weeks of cold-storage, effectiveness of promalin diminished with no apparent preventive effect on plants stored for 5 weeks.
