Introduction.The fast program algorithm of arithmetic coding proposed in the paper is for the compression of digital images. It is shown how the complexity of the arithmetic coder algorithm depends on the complexity measures (the input size is not considered). In the course of work, the most computationally complex parts of the arithmetic coder algorithm are determined. Performance optimization of their software implementation is carried out. Codecs with the new algorithm compress photo and video records obtained through the remote probing of water bodies without frame-to-frame difference.Materials and Methods.In the presented paper, a selection of satellite images of the Azov Sea area was used. At this, the software algorithm of the arithmetic coder was optimized; a theoretical study was conducted; and a computational experiment was performed.Research Results.The performance of the software implementation of the arithmetic coder is increased by the example of the VP9 video codec. Numerous launches of reference and modified codecs were made to measure the runtime. Comparison of the average time of their execution showed that the modified codec performance is 5.21% higher. The overall performance improvement for arithmetic decoding was 7.33%.Discussion and Conclusions.Increase in the speed of the latest digital photo and video image compression algorithms allows them to be used on mobile computing platforms, also as part of the onboard electronics of unmanned aerial vehicles. The theoretical results of this work extend tools of the average-case complexity analysis of the algorithm. They can be used in case where the number of algorithm steps depends not only on the input size, but also on non-measurable criteria (for example, on the common RAM access scheme from parallel processors).

Currently, various applications of ultra-wideband signal–code constructions are among the most vibrant technologies, being implemented in very different fields. The purpose of this research consists of analyzing Barker codes and searching for the optimal nested representations of them. We also aim to synthesize signal–code constructions based on the tenets of nesting of alternative modified Barker codes, which employ an asymmetric alphabet. The scientific merit of the paper is as follows: on the basis of new analytic expressions, modified nested codes and signal–code constructions were obtained, applicable for the establishment of the unambiguous association of the component values of the nested codes with any lobes of the normalized autocorrelation function. With these analytical expressions, we are, hence, able to determine the values of the binary asymmetrical components of the nested codes related to the side lobes of the normalized autocorrelation function. In this way, we clearly obtain better (low) levels for these lobes than by using the autocorrelation function, as established by the equivalent conventional Barker codes, including the nested constructions. Practical application of these modulated ultra-wideband signals ensures improved correlational features, high-fidelity probabilistic detection, and more precise positional detection of physical bodies depending on the range coordinate.

The construction of the so-called Bodmer Composite or Miscellaneous codex has been an ongoing problem since the publication of its constituent parts began in the 1950s. A recent inspection of high resolution digital images of P.Bodmer viii shows compellingly that this portion of the codex had more than one phase of use, was originally part of a separate codex, and was only later removed and joined to the other sections of the Bodmer “composite” codex. The New Testament manuscript known as P72 (P.Bodmer vii + P.Bodmer viii) is thus a codicological unity only in a secondary sense.

The purpose of this research was to analyze social processes as an integral part of gender relations. A theoretical framework was developed using a three-part conceptualization of social processes. Data were collected during semistructured interviews with 35 individuals in three National Governing Bodies of sport in the UK and during unstructured interviews and observation in meetings and sport events attended by the participants. The data were coded and analyzed, and three gendered social processes were examined: informal networking, dress codes, and the use of humor. In the conclusion section, future directions are offered addressing the implications of this research for sport management practitioners, educators, and researchers.

The study reviewed the course codes at undergraduate level in selected universities and Higher Education Commission (HEC). The objectives of the study were to investigate the coding system of courses and propose a system for coding the courses at tertiary level in Pakistan. The coding system of different universities, inside and outside Pakistan, was analyzed and a system of coding was proposed. The study found discrepancies in the coding of courses that cause difficulties for academic bodies and transfer of credits from one university to another. It is recommended that courses of a degree required may be divided in 1) General Education requirements, 2) Subject specific foundation courses, 3) subject specific major compulsory courses, and 4) subject specific major elective courses. For codes 2, 3 or 4 capital letters for a subject along with three numbers (xxx) may be used to specify each course of the university. The left digit of the three may be used for the hardship level. The courses 1xx, 2xx, 3xx and 4xx will be taught in the first, second, third and fourth year, respectively and research may be given 500 at undergraduate level, courses of 5 year may be placed in 5xx and research may be coded as 599. The graduate level courses for MPhil /MS /PhD may be coded as 6xx, 7xx and 8xx for MPhil and PhD all over the country.

The study of legal practice, legal theory, and the issuing of law in early medieval Europe has seen a fundamental paradigm shift over the past three decades as scholars have rejected an older model of the Germanic invasions and/or migrations toppling Roman civilization in the lands of the erstwhile western Empire. It is now well understood that the so-called “barbarian law codes” were, in fact, composite bodies of law drawn from a variety of Roman sources, including not only the compendia produced under the auspices of Emperors Theodosius II (402‐450) and Justinian (527‐565), but also Roman provincial law and Roman military law. This new understanding of the enormous influence of Roman law, in its many forms, on early medieval legal thinking and practice was driven by a detailed re-evaluation of legal texts, which continues unabated to the present day. The volume under consideration here, the revised doctoral dissertation of Dominik Trump completed at the University of Cologne, offers a close examination of an epitome of the Lex Romana Visigothorum, issued by King Alaric II between 505‐507. This epitome, called the Epitome Aegidii after its first editor Pieter Gillis (1486‐1533), played a significant role in both legal studies and practice in the Regnum Francorum because of its great utility. As Trump observes, despite its brevity the Epitome Aegidii has the same range of sources as the Lex Romana. These are the Codex Theodosianus, novellae from after the reign of Theodosius, Pseduo-Pauline sentences, the Codex Gregorianus, the Codex Hermogenionus, and a short responsum from Aemilius Papinianus. The Epitome, therefore, provides yet another index of the value with which legal thinkers and practitioners in early medieval Europe regarded the choices made by the advisors of King Alaric when designing and executing his legal compendium.

This study highlights a number of different aspects regarding uniforms and dress codes in the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden. The study comprises three parts: a quantitative comparison of GCSE pass rates for schools in the UK that do and do not have school uniforms, a qualitative survey study of Scottish High School pupils' perceptions about their uniform and a qualitative interview study of Swedish teachers, administrators and pupils about their school dress, rules regarding school dress and school uniforms.

Regarding whether uniforms improved academic results by comparing GCSE pass rates in the UK we were unable to find conclusive evidence to suggest that schools which had uniform policies performed significantly better than other schools.

Regarding Scottish pupils’ perceptions of their uniforms, pupils from lower-educated backgrounds were more likely to perceive that they were told off by teachers about not wearing the correct dress. When asked whether pupils felt more equal compared to their peers, those from lower-educated background were more likely to think that uniforms do not help to level out class difference compared to pupils from better educated backgrounds. Regarding bullying, even though uniforms existed at the school studied bullying due to what pupils wore to school still existed and pupils perceived that bullying due to other factors such as physical appearance also occurred.

Regarding the results from interviews with teachers and administrators in the Swedish town studied, most teachers took a fairly relaxed attitude towards pupils’ dress although the dress code of not wearing outdoor clothes in High Schools was policed quite strongly. Teachers saw the issue of female pupils dressing overtly sexually as the biggest problem and this was dealt with on an individual level rather than a class level.

High school pupils’ opinions of their dress code varied. Some hated the school rule that they were not allowed to wear outdoor clothes, whereas for others it was not seen as a big deal. A number of pupils thought that what you wore in class does not affect their learning outcomes. Very few pupils thought that introducing a uniform would be a good idea. Pupils at Sixth Form College had a more mature attitude towards their dress and were able to reflect back on their experiences from High School. They did not think that the issue of dress was a major issue in Sixth Form College however this did vary slightly between the three schools studied. Pupils at two of the schools perceived the dress code of the third school as being more formal, but this was due mainly to prejudice according to a number of pupils. The large majority of Sixth Form College students thought that introducing school uniform would be a bad idea and that bullying would not be eradicated because pupils can always pick on other attributes, not just clothing. However there were a couple of Sixth Form College that thought that introducing it would be a good way to reduce peer-pressure to buy the right clothes in High School.

Space-time coding (STC) schemes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems have been an area of active research in the past decade. In this thesis, we propose a novel design of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) using Redundant Residue Number System (RRNS) codes, which are ideal for high data rate communication systems. Application of RRNS as a concatenated STC scheme to a MIMO wireless communication system is the main motivation for this work. We have optimized the link between residues and complex constellations by incorporating the “Direct Mapping” scheme, where residues are mapped directly to Gray coded constellations. Knowledge of apriori probabilities of residues is utilized to implement a probability based “Distance-Aware Direct Mapping” (DA) scheme, which uses a set-partitioning approach to map the most probable residues such that they are separated by the maximum possible distance. We have proposed an “Indirect Mapping” scheme, where we convert the residues back to bits before mapping them. We have also proposed an adaptive demapping scheme which utilizes the RRNS code structure to reduce the ML decoding complexity and improve the error performance. We quantify the upper bounds on codeword and bit error probabilities of both Systematic and Non-systematic RRNS-STBC and characterize the achievable coding and diversity gains assuming maximum likelihood decoding (MLD). Simulation results demonstrate that the DA Mapping scheme provides performance gain relative to a Gray coded direct mapping scheme. We show that Systematic RRNS-STBC codes provide superior performance compared to Nonsystematic RRNS-STBC, for the same code parameters, owing to more efficient binary to residue mapping. When compared to other concatenated STBC and Orthogonal STBC (OSTBC) schemes, the proposed system gives better performance at low SNRs.

This thesis is part of a larger project devoted to modeling galaxies via numerical hydrodynamical simulations, from their formation within their cosmological background throughout their evolutionary history. The thesis has two primary objectives, strictly linked with one another. The first one, of astrophysical nature, is to develop a purely theoretical scenario for the formation and evolution of galaxies in the cosmological context. Given the complexity of the targeted physical systems, it is necessary to rely upon on numerical simulations which in turn require an appropriate numerical code, able to follow the complex physics of galaxies. Therefore, the second objective is the optimization of such code, according to the paradigms of modern computational science. Indeed, given the complexity of the involved physical phenomena the code must be enriched with a number of complex algorithms, which at the same time slow down its performance to such a point that it is difficult to extensively use it to explore the whole scenario in detail, unless sophisticated optimization techniques are applied to drastically reduce the computational time. In this thesis I have studied the problem of the optimization of numerical codes in serial and parallel architectures and I will present the different strategies I have adopted to make them faster, with particular attention to EvoL, the N-body Tree-SPH code entirely written in the house and widely used by the Padua group. To develop and optimize a code like EvoL, specific skills are needed, ranging from classical astrophysics to computer science. To cope with this, in the thesis I first introduce some general concepts on the functioning of a computer machine, its structure and architecture, the various reasons why a code, although correct from a mathematical and logical point a view, does not in practice work at the maximum level of efficiency and does not exploit the formal computing power to disposal in a optimal form. To this aim, I examine some important aspects of the general behaviour of a code and highlight several strategies that can be followed to optimize it. In particular, I analyze the code response in different situations highlighting the limitations, the routines with the heaviest load, and the importance of the communications between CPUs in parallel environment. Given these premises, we present EvoL, a lagrangian code based on the classical NB-TSPH formalism, and describe in some detail its structure and physical content. In particular we report on the new physical treatment of the interstellar medium and the companion codes ROBO and MaNN we have recently developed, and how they are implemented in EvoL. Then we describe the various optimizations we have applied to EvoL in order to improve its efficiency. Finally we report on the physical results we have obtained using EvoL, and ancillary codes ROBO and MaNN. In brief, we describe the physical content of the last release of EvoL, and the many hydrodynamical test we have performed to validate it. Second we describe the two studies dedicated to the treatment of the interstellar medium with the state of the art description of its chemistry and thermodynamical properties, and how these results can be implemented in EvoL, thanks to an extensive use of the artificial neural networks. Finally we present a set new models of early type galaxies obtained from cosmological initial conditions at varying the initial mass and density contrast with respect to the cosmological background and their subsequent evolution into well behaved galaxies. Particular attention is paid to the different role played by the density contrast of dark matter in the proto-halo generating the galaxy and the density of the baryonic matter (gas) required to initiate the star formation process. In general, while proto-galaxies of high mass give origin to a single dominant episode of star formation taking place very early on in a galaxy’s history, proto-galaxies of low mass have a more complicated history of star formation, which a series of episodes of variable intensity often interrupted by periods of quiescence.
Questa tesi è parte di un più ampio progetto dedicato alla comprensione e alla modellizzazione della formazione ed evoluzione delle galassie da diversi punti di vista: formazione di strutture cosmologiche a tutte le scale e formazione ed evoluzione della singole entità fatte di materia oscura e barionica. La tesi ha due obiettivi fondamentali intimamente legati. Il primo di natura astrofisica è già stato toccato e riguarda lo sviluppo di uno scenario puramente teorico per la formazione ed evoluzione delle galassie in contesto cosmologico. Data la complessità dei sistemi fisici studiati, il lavoro è fortemente basato su simulazioni numeriche che richiedono appropriati codici in grado di seguire la complessa fisica delle galassie. Pertanto, il secondo obiettivo riguarda l’ottimizzazione del codice numerico secondo i paradigmi della moderna scienza computazionale. Infatti, la complessità dei fenomeni fisici considerati, rende il codice più dettagliato da un punto di vista fisico, ma allo stesso tempo, lo rallenta al punto che non può essere direttamente utilizzato in modo sistematico, a meno che non vengano applicate sofisticate tecniche di ottimizzazione per ridurne drasticamente i tempi di calcolo. In questa tesi ho studiato il problema della ottimizzazione di codici numerici in architetture seriali e parallele e le strategie adottate per renderli più veloci, con particolare attenzione al codice EvoL interamente scritto in casa e ampiamente utilizzato il gruppo di Padova. Per sviluppare e ottimizzare un codice come EvoL sono necessarie competenze specifiche che vanno dalla astrofisica classica alla “computer science”. In sintesi, ho esaminato alcuni aspetti importanti del comportamento generale del codice e illustrato le diverse strategie applicate per ottimizzarlo. In particolare ho analizzato la risposta di un codice in situazioni diverse mettendo in evidenza i limiti globali, le routine di calcolo che spendono più tempo, e l’importanza delle comunicazioni MPI. Viene poi presentato il codice evolutivo e il suo contenuto fisico: EvoL è l’ultima versione del codice numerico lagrangiano sviluppato a Padova da C. Chiosi e collaboratori (Carraro et al. 1998; Merlin et al. 2010) basato sui classici algoritmi Tree-code (Barnes and Hut 1986) e SPH (Lucy 1977). Riporto il nuovo trattamento fisico del mezzo interstellare attraverso i codici recentemente sviluppati ROBO e MaNN, e l’implementazione del modello in EvoL. Ancora, vengono descritte le metodologie usate per valutare l’efficienza complessiva di EvoL, e le varie ottimizzazioni applicate; si descrivono anche i risultati ottenuti utilizzando il codice. Prima sono illustrati i diversi miglioramenti fisici che abbiamo incluso in EvoL, e i relativi tests idrodinamici fatti per validare il suo contenuto fisico. Successivamente si descrivono i due studi dedicati al trattamento del mezzo interstellare, della sua chimica, delle sue proprietà termodinamiche. Infine presentiamo una nuova serie di modelli di galassie “early type”, ottenute da condizioni iniziali cosmologiche variando la massa iniziale e il contrasto di densità rispetto al fondo cosmologico, e la loro successiva evoluzione. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al diverso ruolo svolto dal contrasto densità di materia oscura nel proto-alone e la densità della materia barionica (gas) necessaria per avviare il processo di formazione stellare. In generale, mentre le proto-galassie di grande massa danno origine ad un singolo episodio di formazione stellare che avviene precocemente nel corso della storia evolutiva della galassia, le proto-galassie di piccola massa hanno una storia di formazione stellare più complicata, con una serie di episodi di intensità variabile spesso interrotti da periodi di quiescenza.

O Código Civil de 2002 disciplinou os atos de disposição do próprio corpo em vida em seu artigo 13, definindo como limites para o exercício da autonomia corporal a impossibilidade de diminuição permanente da integridade física e o respeito aos bons costumes, ressalvado os atos praticados por exigência médica ou finalidade terapêutica. Sob a perspectiva da constitucionalização do direito civil, a tutela da personalidade afigura-se como desdobramento na esfera privada de um dos fundamentos da República: o princípio da dignidade humana, o que implica não apenas a tutela da integridade física, mas também o respeito à autonomia privada existencial como forma de assegurar o livre desenvolvimento da personalidade. Neste sentido, a análise proposta parte das premissas de superação do dualismo mente e corpo através da noção de integridade psicofísica, e do biopoder como alicerce das interdições sofridas pela autonomia corporal na esfera jurídica. É nesta linha que a presente dissertação pretende buscar os fundamentos para a interpretação do referido dispositivo do Código Civil brasileiro.
The Civil Code of 2002 regulates the acts of own body disposal while living in its 13 th article determinating the impossibility of permanent diminish of the physical integrity and the respect of morality as limits for the exercise of body autonomy, with the except of the acts practiced under medical demand or with therapeutic finality. Under the perspective of the constitutionalization of the Civil Law, the guardianship of the personality appears as an outspread of one of the Republics fundamentals on the private sphere: the human dignity principle, which implies not only the guardianship of physical integrity, but also the respect of existential private autonomy as a way to assure the free development of the personality. In that sense, the analysis proposed is set off with the premises of the body and mind dualism surpass through the notion of psychophysics integrity, and the biopower as the foundation of the interdictions in the juridical sphere suffered by the body autonomy. It is in this line that the present dissertation intends to search the elements in order to interpret the referred legal device of the brazilian civil code.

Les satellites sont mis en orbite en utilisant des lanceurs dont la conception est une des activités principales d’Airbus Defence and Space. Pour ce faire, se baser sur des expériences n’est pas facile : les souffleries ne permettent pas d’évaluer toutes les situations auxquelles un lanceur est confronté au cours de sa mission. La simulation numérique est donc essentielle pour l’industrie spatiale. Afin de disposer de simulations toujours plus fidèles, il est nécessaire d’utiliser des supercalculateurs de plus en plus puissants. Cependant, ces machines voient leur complexité augmenter et pour pouvoir exploiter leur plein potentiel, il est nécessaire d’adapter les codes existants. Désormais, il semble essentiel de passer par des couches d’abstraction afin d’assurer une bonne portabilité des performances. ADS a développé depuis plus de 20 ans le code FLUSEPA qui est utilisé pour le calcul de phénomènes instationnaires comme les calculs d’onde de souffle au décollage ou les séparations d’étages. Le solveur aérodynamique est basé sur une formulation volume fini et une technique d’intégration temporelle adaptative. Les corps en mouvement sont pris en compte via l’utilisation de plusieurs maillages qui sont combinés par intersections.Cette thèse porte sur la parallélisation du code FLUSEPA. Au début de la thèse, la seule version parallèle disponible était en mémoire partagée. Une première version parallèle en mémoire distribuée a d’abord été réalisée. Les gains en performance de cette version ont été évalués via l’utilisation de deux cas tests industriels. Un démonstrateur du solveur aérodynamique utilisant la programmation par tâche au dessus d’un runtime a aussi été réalisé
There are different kinds of satellites that offer different services like communication, navigationor observation. They are put into orbit through the use of launchers whose design is oneof the main activities of Airbus Defence and Space. Relying on experiments is not easy : windtunnel cannot be used to evaluate every critical situation that a launcher will face during itsmission. Numerical simulation is therefore mandatory for spatial industry.In order to have more reliable simulations, more computational power is needed and supercomputersare used. Those supercomputers become more and more complex and this impliesto adapt existing codes to make them run efficiently. Nowadays, it seems important to rely onabstractions in order to ensure a good portability of performance. Airbus Defence and Spacedeveloped for more than 20 years the FLUSEPA code which is used to compute unsteady phenomenalike take-off blast wave or stage separation. The aerodynamic solver relies on a finitevolume formulation and an explicit temporal adaptive solver. Bodies in relative motion are takeninto account through the use of multiple meshes that are overlapped.This thesis is about the parallelization of the FLUSEPA code. At the start of the thesis,the only parallel version available was in shared memory through OpenMP. A first distributedmemory version was realized and relies on MPI and OpenMP. The performance improvementof this version was evaluated on two industrial test cases. A task-based demonstrator of theaerodynamic solver was also realized over a runtime system

En réinterrogeant la conception occidentale de la communication portée par ce média, elle met en regard la forme matérielle du livre et sa fonction symbolique. La thèse se nourrit d'une histoire des formes pour analyser les mutations liées à l’émergence du « livre numérique ». Le livre assure une fonction de médiation entre les partenaires de l’échange, irréductiblement absents l’un à l’autre. Cette absence est envisagée comme un principe moteur, travaillant le processus communicationnel du livre dont la matérialisation constituerait l’hypothèse d’une « rencontre ». Dès lors, dans quelle mesure le livre emprunte-t-il au modèle du corps pour prendre en charge sa fonction de médiation et fonder son « opérativité symbolique » ? Renversant le regard sur cet objet considéré comme figé, nous interrogeons son processus dynamique d’inscription dans la vie sociale. Et, envisageant les dimensions « composites » de sa fabrique, nous tentons de saisir les enjeux des corporéités du livre entre langue, texte et support. Notre hypothèse est que le livre se donne comme un corps substitutif porté par une pensée de la co-présence de ses acteurs, en tant que forme dans laquelle ils font alternativement « présence ». Il s’agit donc d’interroger les corporéités du média et en retour d’analyser la façon dont le livre participe de la construction de conceptions culturelles et sociales du corps. In today’s digital age, this Ph.D. thesis focuses on books defined as a form of media. Reconsidering the western idea of the communication conveyed by this medium, it juxtaposes the physical form of books and their symbolic role. This thesis is built on a history of the forms a book can take to analyse the transformations related to the rise of the « e-book ». Books fulfil a role of mediation between the partners of an exchange, who are irreducibly absent from each other. This absence is envisioned as a driving force, shaping the communication process of books, which incarnation would constitute the presumption of an encounter. To what extent are the mediation function played by books and the foundation of their symbolic efficiency built on the very same bases as those of bodies? Although generally considered as being immovable objects, we revolutionize the way books are perceived, and we examine the dynamic process of their acceptance in social life. Accounting for their “composite” features, we attempt to fully apprehend the implications of the corporealities of books, including language, text and physical object. Our hypothesis is that a book may be viewed as a substitute of a body, nourished by the thought of the co-presence of its contributors, in that it constitutes a form in which they are alternatively present. It is therefore necessary to investigate the corporealities of the media and to analyse the role of books in the construction of the cultural and social concepts of the body. Reconsidering the implications of the mediation, this thesis raises the prospects of an anthropology of communication, inviting to re-evaluate the medias from the perspective of a restructuring of the relations between nature and culture

Introdução: A força muscular inspiratória tem sido tradicionalmente avaliada pela pressão inspiratória máxima (PImáx). A pressão inspiratória nasal (sniff nasal inspiratory pressure [SNIP]) é uma alternativa viável ao uso da PImáx e é considerada um preditor de mortalidade em pacientes com doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC). No entanto, a relação da SNIP com índices multidimensionais preditores de mortalidade como o Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea and Exercise capacity (BODE) ainda não foi investigada. Objetivo: Investigar a relação entre a SNIP e o índice BODE em pacientes com DPOC, bem como, investigar a capacidade de diferentes pontos de corte da SNIP em prever um índice BODE ≥ 5 (ou seja, pior gravidade da doença). Métodos: Trinta e oito pacientes com DPOC (21 homens, 66 ± 8 anos, com volume expiratório forçado no primeiro segundo (VEF1) de 42 ± 16% do previsto) foram submetidos a avaliações da SNIP, espirometria, grau de limitação devido à dispneia na vida diária (Medical Research Council - MRC) e a capacidade de exercício por meio do teste de caminhada de 6 minutos (TC6min). O índice BODE foi calculado e os pacientes foram subdivididos em dois grupos de acordo com os quartis do BODE (1 e 2 ou 3 e 4). Resultados: Os pacientes dos quartis 3 e 4 apresentaram menores valores da SNIP do que os pacientes dos quartis 1 e 2 (73±18 cmH2O vs 56±21 cmH2O, respectivamente, P=0,01). Houve correlação significativa e negativa entre a SNIP e o índice BODE (r = -0,62, P <0,001). Um modelo de regressão logística revelou que o ponto de corte da SNIP de 63 cmH2O apresentou maior especificidade e sensibilidade (67% e 70% , respectivamente) para a previsão de uma pontuação equivalente aos quartis 3 ou 4 do índice BODE. Conclusão: Em pacientes com DPOC a SNIP é moderadamente e significativamente relacionada com a gravidade da doença avaliada pelo índice BODE. Além disso, o ponto de corte de 63 cmH2O apresentou a melhor combinação de sensibilidade e especificidade para predizer uma pontuação mais alta (i.e., mais grave) no índice BODE.
Introduction: Inspiratory muscle force has been traditionally assessed by maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP). The sniff nasal inspiratory pressure [SNIP] is an alternative to the MIP, and it is considered a predictor of mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the relationship of SNIP with multidimensional indexes which predict mortality in patients with COPD such as the Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea and Exercise capacity (BODE) index has not been investigated yet. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP) and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as defined by the BODE index; and to investigate the capacity of different SNIP cutoffs to predict a BODE index score ≥ 5 (i.e worse disease severity). Methods: Thirty-eight subjects with COPD (21 men, 66±8 years, forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) 42±16% predicted) underwent assessments of SNIP, airflow limitation, body mass index (BMI), dyspnea (Medical Research Council scale, MRC) and exercise capacity (6-minute walking test, 6MWT). The BODE index was calculated and patients were separated into two groups according to the BODE quartiles (1 and 2, or 3 and 4). Results: Patients from quartiles 3 and 4 presented lower values of SNIP than patients from quartiles 1 and 2 (73±18 cmH2O vs 56±21 cmH2O, respectively; P=0.01). There was significant and negative correlation between SNIP and the BODE index (r=-0.62; P<0.001). A logistic regression model revealed that a SNIP value below 63 cmH2O presented higher sensitivity and specificity (70% and 67%, respectively) for predicting a BODE score equivalent to quartiles 3 or 4. Conclusion: SNIP is moderately and significantly related to COPD severity as assessed by the BODE index. Moreover, the cutoff point of 63 cmH2O showed the best combination of sensitivity and specificity for predicting worse scores in the BODE index.

AbstractThis essay reads Max Ritvo’s poetry through a chronology of precision biomedicine: imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Ritvo’s construction of a patient-consumer avatar in his poetry reflects his position at a biomedical frontier, while poetic form becomes a way of retrieving bodies from a logic of substitution and surrogacy. A body lying under the weight of relentless, and relentlessly variable, imaging is catapulted through memory to a place by the sea in “The Curve.” In “Poem to My Litter,” the speaker addresses the laboratory mice injected with his tumors, drawing himself closer to them through their shared imprisonment in bodies on their way out of life, and suspending a bioeconomy embedded in a moral economy of sacrifice and faith. If precision medicine depends on making the analogical and metaphorical into common consensus—images that stand in for bodies, codes that stand in for disease—then Ritvo upends its neat architecture. He sticks instead with the messiness of bodies failing to meet an elusive salvation.

This paper presents the findings from using several commercial computational fluid dynamics codes in a joint numerical and experimental project to simulate WRASPA, a new wave energy converter (WEC) device. A series of fully 3D non-linear simulations of WRASPA are presented. Three commercial codes STAR-CCM, CFX and FLOW-3D are considered for simulating the WRASPA device and final results are presented based on the use of Flow-3D. Results are validated by comparison to experimental data obtained from small scale tank tests undertaken at Lancaster University (LU). The primary aim of the project is to use numerical simulation to optimize the collector geometry for power production over a range of likely wave climates. A secondary aim is to evaluate the ability of commercial codes to simulate rigid body motion in linear and non-linear wave climates in order to choose the optimal code with respect to compute speed and ease of problem setup. Issues relating to the ability of a code in terms of numerical dissipation of waves, wave absorption, wave breaking, grid generation and moving bodies will all be discussed. The findings of this paper serve as a basis for an informed choice of commercial package for such simulations. However the capability of these commercial codes is increasing with every new release.

Thermal-hydraulic system computer codes are extensively used worldwide for analysis of nuclear facilities by utilities, regulatory bodies, nuclear power plant designers and vendors, nuclear fuel companies, research organizations, consulting companies, and technical support organizations. The computer code user represents a source of uncertainty that can influence the results of system code calculations. This influence is commonly known as the ‘user effect’ and stems from the limitations embedded in the codes as well as from the limited capability of the analysts to use the codes. Code user training and qualification is an effective means for reducing the variation of results caused by the application of the codes by different users. This paper describes a systematic approach to training code users who, upon completion of the training, should be able to perform calculations making the best possible use of the capabilities of best estimate codes. In other words, the program aims at contributing towards solving the problem of user effect. The 3D S.UN.COP (Scaling, Uncertainty and 3D COuPled code calculations) seminars have been organized as follow-up of the proposal to IAEA for the Permanent Training Course for System Code Users [1]. Five seminars have been held at University of Pisa (2003, 2004), at The Pennsylvania State University (2004), at University of Zagreb (2005) and at the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (2006). It was recognized that such courses represented both a source of continuing education for current code users and a mean for current code users to enter the formal training structure of a proposed ‘permanent’ stepwise approach to user training. The 3D S.UN.COP 2006 was successfully held with the attendance of 33 participants coming from 18 countries and 28 different institutions (universities, vendors, national laboratories and regulatory bodies). More than 30 scientists (coming from 13 countries and 23 different institutions) were involved in the organization of the seminar, presenting theoretical aspects of the proposed methodologies and holding the training and the final examination. A certificate (LA Code User grade) was released to participants that successfully solved the assigned problems. The dynamic behavior of the human body during race car maneuvers and frontal crash tests is analyzed in this paper. Both the vehicle and the human body have been modeled using the multi-body approach. Two commercial codes, BRG LifeMOD Biomechanics Modeler®, for the simulation of the human body dynamics, and MSC ADAMS/Car® for the modeling of the vehicle behavior, have been used for the purpose. Due to the impossibility of co-simulating, at first the accelerations on the driver’s chassis are determined using the vehicle’s multibody code and approximating the driver as a rigid body. Then, the calculated accelerations are applied to the vehicle chassis in the biomechanics code to assess the accelerations in various significant points on the driver.

WEC-Sim (Wave Energy Converter-SIMulator) is an open-source wave energy converter (WEC) code capable of simulating WECs of arbitrary device geometry subject to operational waves. The code is developed in MATLAB/Simulink using the multi-body dynamics solver SimMechanics, and relies on Boundary Element Method (BEM) codes to obtain hydrodynamic coefficients such as added mass, radiation damping, and wave excitation. WEC-Sim Version 1.0, released in Summer 2014, models WECs as a combination of rigid bodies, joints, linear power take-offs (PTOs), and mooring systems. This paper outlines the development of PTO-Sim (Power Take Off-SIMulator), the WEC-Sim module responsible for accurately modeling a WEC’s conversion of mechanical power to electrical power through its PTO system. PTO-Sim consists of a Simulink library of PTO component blocks that can be linked together to model different PTO systems. Two different applications of PTO-Sim will be given in this paper: a hydraulic power take-off system model, and a direct drive power take-off system model.

Since its foundation in 1997, the Main Committee on Power Generation Facility Codes, MC-PGFC, of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, JSME, has issued a number of nuclear codes including the rules on design and construction and the rules on fitness-for-service for nuclear power plants. Some of these JSME nuclear codes have been endorsed by the regulatory body, and are now utilized in the regulatory processes of the actual plants. Among these nuclear codes recently published is the “rules on design and construction for fast reactors”. It includes as its main body design rules on class 1 components for elevated temperature services. This paper overview the main features of the code.

Abstract When two or more bodies are floating in waves in each other’s vicinity, the fluid loading on the separate bodies will be influenced by the presence of the neighboring bodies. The wave loads on each body are affected, because of sheltering or wave-reflection effects due to the presence of surrounding floating body, while additional loads are exerted by the radiated waves, which are produced by the motions of the neighboring bodies. For a multi-body system, it is important to accurately compute the hydrodynamic coefficients and interaction coefficients, since these parameters will be used later to solve the 6xN simultaneous equations to predict the motion responses (where N is the number of freely floating bodies in the multi-body system). This paper aims to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction coefficients for two three dimensional (3-D) bodies floating freely in each other’s vicinity. Since the nature of hydrodynamic interaction is rather complex, it is usually recommended to study this complicated phenomenon using numerically accurate scheme. A computer code developed using 3-D source distribution method which is based on linear three-dimensional potential theory is used and the validation of the computer code has been justified by comparing the present results with that of the published ones for hydrodynamic coefficients and interaction coefficients of two bodies closely floating in regular waves. The calculated results for box-cylinder model are compared with the published results and the agreement is quite satisfactory. Numerical simulations are further conducted for two closely floating rectangular barges of side-by-side position in regular waves. During the computations of hydrodynamic coefficients and interaction coefficients for multi-body model, the separation distance between the floating bodies have been varied. Finally, some conclusions are drawn on the basis of the present analysis.

The FSA has a key role as the central competent authority in overseeing official food and feed controls undertaken by local authorities. This supports the delivery of the FSA’s mission, food you can trust, and helps ensure food is safe and what it says it is. The FSA seeks to work in partnership with local authorities to help them to deliver official food and feed controls. Local Authority (LA) Environmental Health (EH), Port Health and Trading Standards (TS) teams deliver official food and feed controls using a range of interventions as set out in the Food Law Code of Practice (FLCoP) and Feed Law Code of Practice (FeLCoP). They are instrumental to the delivery of the FSA mission, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure consumer confidence and protect public health. Evidence from professional bodies, LAs and wider sources suggests that LAs are experiencing significant issues around the recruitment and retention of suitably/ appropriately qualified and experienced officers.(footnote 1) The FSA commissioned Ipsos UK to carry out this initial phase of discovery research to understand more about the barriers and facilitators encountered by LAs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Software has become essential in all areas of scientific research, both as a tool for research, a product of research, and a research object in itself. In the quest to make research results reproducible, and pass knowledge to future generations, we must preserve three main pillars: the research articles that describe the results, the data sets used or produced, and the software source code that embodies the logic of the data transformation. Indeed, the preservation of software source code is as essential as preserving research articles and data sets. The main aim of this in-person half-day event, organized by the French Committee for Open Science on November 29th 2023, was to bring together high-level stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds, including researchers, research software engineers, research evaluation bodies, infrastructures, academic open source program offices (OSPOs), and financial backers, to share their experience and views on research software. The workshop featured three panel sessions, in which speakers focused on major dimensions of relevance to software in open science: − Acknowledgment of software as a key pillar for reproducible research; − Recognition and support for the dissemination of software; − Highlighting of the social impact of software.

A pipeline girth weld may contain one single or multiple defects. If discrete multiple notches occur, current codes define by applying proximity rules the defect dimensions to be used in an ECA. The defect interaction rules contained in pipeline specific standards are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics with conservative approximations. Similar solutions for failure by plastic collapse are non-existent. In this study, using experimental data of wide plate tests, interaction criteria for ductile girth welds containing multiple coplanar surface breaking defects are proposed. Based on a simple plastic collapse assessment, defect length limits ensuring the onset of remote yielding in the pipe bodies are calculated. A two-tier assessment procedure, based on a comparison of the sum of the individual defect lengths with these characteristic limits, is proposed. If the total defect length is smaller than the characteristic defect length limit interaction will not occur. The defect length limit ensuring remote yielding in the case of multiple defects is dependent on the spacing between defects. The defect length limits also incorporate the effect of yield-to-tensile ratio. The performance behaviour of wide plates with coplanar surface-breaking defects is compared with existing and proposed interaction criteria. The assessment shows that the proposed defect interaction procedure is less conservative than the rules currently embodied in pipeline specific standards.

The CREATE-AV™ Helios CFD simulation code has been used to accurately predict rotorcraft performance under a variety of flight conditions. The Helios package contains a suite of tools that contain almost the entire set of functionality needed for a variety of workflows. These workflows include tools customized to properly specify many in situ analysis and visualization capabilities appropriate for rotorcraft analysis. In situ is the process of computing analysis and visualization information during a simulation run before data is saved to disk. In situ has been referred to with a variety of terms including co-processing, covisualization, coviz, etc. In this paper we describe the customization of the pre-processing GUI and corresponding development of the Helios solver code-base to effectively implement in situ analysis and visualization to reduce file IO and speed up workflows for CFD analysts. We showcase how the workflow enables the wide variety of Helios users to effectively work in post-processing tools they are already familiar with as opposed to forcing them to learn new tools in order post-process in situ data extracts being produced by Helios. These data extracts include various sources of information customized to Helios, such as knowledge about the near- and off-body grids, internal surface extracts with patch information, and volumetric extracts meant for fast post-processing of data. Additionally, we demonstrate how in situ can be used by workflow automation tools to help convey information to the user that would be much more difficult when using full data dumps.

CREATE™-AV Helios is a high-fidelity coupled CFD/CSD infrastructure developed by the U.S. Dept. of Defense for aeromechanics predictions of rotorcraft. This paper discusses new capabilities added to Helios version 11.0. A new fast-running reduced order aerodynamics option called ROAM has been added to enable faster-turnaround analysis. ROAM is Cartesian-based, employing an actuator line model for the rotor and an immersed boundary model for the fuselage. No near-body grid generation is required and simulations are significantly faster through a combination of larger timesteps and reduced cost per step. ROAM calculations of the JVX tiltrotor configuration give a comparably accurate download prediction to traditional body-fitted calculations with Helios, at 50X less computational cost. The unsteady wake in ROAM is not as well resolved, but wake interactions may be a less critical issue for many design considerations. The second capability discussed is the addition of six-degree-of-freedom capability to model store separation. Helios calculations of a generic wing/store/pylon case with the new 6-DOF capability are found to match identically to calculations with CREATE™-AV Kestrel, a code which has been extensively validated for store separation calculations over the past decade.

This document describes the repackaging and linkage of the Sandia National Laboratories Environmental Fluid Dynamics Sediment Processes Code (SNL-EFDC-SEDZLJ), (Thanh et al. 2008). It was originally incorporated within a modified version of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) EFDC public-domain surface-water flow, sediment transport, and water-quality model developed by John Hamrick (Hamrick 1992) and its linkage to the ERDC-CHL-CMS hydrodynamic model. SNL-EFDC simulates flow and transport of sediment as bedload and suspended load. SNL-EFDC-SEDZLJ improves EFDC with updated sediment kinetics subroutines. Sediment erosion is calculated using data collected with a Sediment Erosion at Depth flume (SEDflume). SEDflume measures erosion rates as a function of shear stress and depth from relatively undisturbed cores taken directly from the sediment bed below the water body of interest. The use of SEDflume data provides more accurate sediment erosion rates that are directly input to the model.
