Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe ephemeral beauty of soap films is not only a source of wonder and poetic inspiration, but also conceals fundamental scientific questions, which are at the heart of various applications, ranging from shampoo formulation to oil recovery. This work aims at understanding how the life of a soap film, from its generation until its rupture, is affected by the physical-chemical properties of the surfactants used to stabilise it.First, I present a stationary model describing the generation of vertical soap films, under the assumption of insoluble surfactants. I show that the film thickness is controlled by both the generation velocity and the film surface elasticity. The model successfully describes experimental data for soluble surfactants, at least when adsorption is slow. I also introduce an original experimental set up for the generation of liquid films stabilised by insoluble surfactants, which are certainly a promising model system. Secondly, I study the time evolution – i.e. the drainage and rupture – of thin films pulled from a liquid bath, starting with the simplified case of pure liquids. Implementing a non-stationary simulation, I am able to predict the lifetime of silicone oil thin films as a function of the generation velocity, which I find in quantitative agreement with experimental data. I then carry out systematic experiments to characterise the drainage of soap films for various generation velocities, environmental humidities and positions in the film. I also demonstrate the influence of dTAB concentration and humidity on film lifetime. Finally, I investigate how surfactant concentration affects the drainage and break-up dynamics of hemispherical soap bubbles at the surface of a liquid pool, which is a system somewhat closer to real foams

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDuctile fracture of metallic alloys occurs by the nucleation, growth and coalescence of microvoids. In a first step, we study the influence of void shape effects and plastic anisotropy on the growth phase. we implement numerically in a finite element code the void growth model of madou and leblond for ellipsoidal voids embedded in an isotropic material, in order to apply the model to ductile fracture problems involving important void shape effects. We show that the consideration of void shape effects is necessary in order to reproduce shear-dominant ductile fracture. This model is then extended to plastic anisotropy, in the spirit of the models of monchiet and benzerga. In particular, we derive a macroscopic criterion for anisotropic materials containing general ellipsoidal voids, which is assessed by finite element limite analyses. In a second step, we study the effects of void size on the ductile fracture of nanoporous materials contenant spherical or spheroidal voids. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to the study of void shape effects and plastic anisotropy on the coalescence phase. We derive two new criteria of coalescence by internal necking, which are assessed numerically. Then, we derive a new criterion that permits to unify the growth and coalescence phases. Finally we study the influence of plasticy anisotropy on coalescence by internal necking

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn the context of two-phase flows with separated phases, this work focuses on dynamic management of the interface mesh (made up of connected triangles in 3D) and its impact on the approximation of geometrical properties that are position and curvature. The conservation equations of fluid mechanics are solved on fixed, staggered and structured grids. The interface is tracked in a Lagrangian fashion with a moving and deformable mesh: this method is known as the"Front-tracking" method. In addition to classical remeshing operations (edgesplitting, collapsing and swapping for instance), we will study the adaptation of the mesh to the curvature of the interface and the use of polynomial approximation to improve edge splitting and collapsing. These methods are evaluated on analytical, mobile and deformable surfaces, with neither the resolution of the Navier-Stokes equations nor topological changes. In two-phaseflows, topological changes may happen: coalescence and breakup. We propose a method for coalescence and a method for breakup. These two methods are activated by distance criteria and rely only on the interface mesh, without resorting to the Eulerian mesh. These methods are employed on numerical and experimental configurations from the literature to appreciate their robustness and performances

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PhD project deals with the study of the hydrodynamics of the dispersions in the liquid-liquid extractors employed in the nuclear recycle industry. In the first part of the project, a zero-dimensional homogenous Population Balance Model (0D-PBM), based on the evaluation of the volume-averaged coalescence and breakup rates, is adopted to fit low-viscosity turbulent liquid-liquid dispersion experiments. The method accounts for the spatial inhomogeneities in mixing, namely for the probability density function of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation in the apparatus. In the second part of this study, a generalized model for the breakage and coalescence kernels, valid for the entire spectrum of turbulence, is proposed and validated. Most of the available kernels in literature indeed are based on the Kolmogorov second-order structure function, which is only valid in the inertial subrange. However, in many industrially encountered situations, most of the droplets may have size in the dissipation range, where the Kolmogorov second-order structure function does not apply. The generalized model is based on the Davidson second-order structure function, valid in the entire spectrum of turbulence. In the last part of the study, a model that allows to simulate the hydrodynamic behavior of a pulsed column is proposed. The model is based on a 1D Population Balance Equation (1D-PBE), whose source terms were modeled through the generalized Coulaloglou and Tavlarides kernels. The turbulent inhomogeneities in the pulsed column were accounted through the probability density function of the turbulent dissipation rate. The model well reproduces the experimental Sauter mean diameters and the dispersed phase volume fractions in a compartment of the pulsed column
