Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis studies the school segregation factors of in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, that is the concentration of pupils according to their social condition in unequal educational circuits. Although the thesis emphasizes space polarization as a priority exogenous factor of educational segregation, it concentrates on certain endogenous factors, connected with the functioning of the school system. The work shows that state regulation ' of the government of the province of Buenos Aires establishes segregation bay direct and indirect ways, through the rules which define distribution of pupils, teachers, material resources and educational offers between schools. By opening wide margins of action to the actors situated fIat the base" of the school system -intermediate authorities, school directors and families -in the distribution of the mentioned elements, regulation indirectly facilitates school segregation. Practices of competition from schools and of choice from families under the indulgent or sometimes complice action of intermediate authorities contribute to bigger school segregation. Registered in a "sociology of regulation ", this research reflects on the processes of construction and on the characteristics of the rules which facilitate school segregation in the suburb of Buenos Aires

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis study explores middle class Pentecostalism in Argentina. A religious movement that has spread predominantly within Latin America's lower classes, Pentecostalism has so far been studied mainly as a lower class religion, whereas its relationship to the middle class has been barely investigated. Endeavoring to fill this void, this study poses the following questions: How does Argentina's middle class relate to Pentecostalism? What form of Pentecostalism do middle class Pentecostals create? This dissertation addresses these questions based on empirical research on the Pentecostal movement in and around Buenos Aires, Argentina. Pentecostalism stands to some degree in tension with the social representations of the Argentinean middle class. Considered a lower class movement showing "inappropriate" characteristics such as speaking in tongues, Pentecostalism does not fit well with the representations of the middle class. It appears as an inappropriate religious practice. When affiliated with this movement, middle class actors overstep to some degree the symbolic boundaries of the middle class and may, in consequence, suffer social tensions with their peers. This raises the question of how these individuals deal with the inappropriateness of their religious belonging. Argentinean middle class Pentecostals employ symbolic boundary work to negotiate the (in-) appropriateness of their religious belonging

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDespite the global decline in poverty and the expansion of the middle-income class in developingcountries, a large proportion of the world’s population remains economically vulnerable, whether due to precariousemployment, unstable incomes, or lack of access to social protection mechanisms. This thesis examinesthe economically vulnerable classes in Latin America, a region that is emblematic of these trends. Thefirst chapter looks at the Argentine middle class from the perspective of the recent crises that have impactedthe country. The analysis reveals that the middle class is large but fragmented in terms of employment andeducation. A substantial proportion of its members remain economically vulnerable, impacted by successivecrises. Its members are mainly critical of the lack of state support, the poor quality of public services, and theunfairness of redistribution policies. Building on this observation, the second chapter explores more specificallythe role played by territorial anchorage in the redistributive demands of citizens in Latin America, wherestrong socio-economic inequalities persist. The results show a divide between citizens in major urban centersand those in peripheral areas, with the latter demanding greater redistribution. This chapter shows the importanceof considering territorial disparities in the formation of redistributive demands beyond individualcharacteristics. The third chapter assesses the effectiveness of a conditional cash transfer program in securingthe most vulnerable citizens in Argentina. The results reveal the overall effectiveness of the scheme in reducingincome instability and preventing a return to poverty. Overall, this thesis highlights the high economicvulnerability of a significant proportion of the Latin American population, and shows the need to develop andstrengthen social protection mechanisms not only to secure the most vulnerable, but also to respond to citizens’distrust of politics and institutions, exacerbated by spatial fractures
