AbstractIt is generally accepted that the purine nucleoside, adenosine, plays a neuromodulatory role in the central nervous system (CNS) (Daly et al., 1981; Phillis ' Wu, 1983; Williams, 1986; Williams, 1987; Snyder, 1985). Adenosine is thought to exert its primary effects presynaptically, by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters including ³-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and acetylcholine (ACh) (Phillis ' Barraco, 1985; Proctor ' Dunwiddie, 1987). In mammalian retina, cell bodies that are strongly labeled for adenosine-like immunoreactivity (ALIR) have been localized to the ganglion cell layer (GCL) (Braas et al., 1987; Blazynski et al., 1989). Rabbit retinal cells that are labeled by markers for both ACh and GABA are located in the GCL and inner nuclear layer (INL) (Tauchi ' Masland, 1984; Vaney ' Young, 1988b; Brecha et al., 1988). It is now demonstrated in the rabbit retina that approximately 50% of the cells labeled for ALIR within the GCL represent true ganglion cells, with the remainder presumed to be displaced cholinergic amacrine cells (DAPI accumulating). In addition, some of these same cells also demonstrate immunoreactivity to glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), involved in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter GABA. Thus, in a particular class of retinal neurons, two fast-acting neurotransmitters as well as a putative neuromodulator have been co-localized.

The effect of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and non-ART ovulation stimulation fertility treatment on the number and rate of multiple live births from 1979–2008 in Japan was estimated using two independent data sources, ART statistics and vital statistics. Japanese ART statistics presented by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology between 1989 and 2008 were gathered and reanalyzed. The number and rates of ART between 1984 and 1988 were interpolated using an approximation formula, using the values from 1983, when the first ART baby was born in Japan, and the 1989–1992 values. The number of ART multiples between 1979–1982 was set as equal to zero. The minimum (or maximum) number of non-ART iatrogenic multiple births was estimated by subtracting the maximum (or minimum) ART multiples from the total iatrogenic multiples, which was estimated by vital statistics assuming that spontaneous multiple-birth rates according to maternal age class would be constant. There was an overall increase in the non-ART multiple births during the 30-year period, whereas ART multiples tended to increase from 1983 to 2005, and then rapidly decreased thereafter. The number or percentage of ART multiples was almost consistently lower than that of non-ART multiples. The percentage of non-ART multiples (33%) among the total multiples was estimated to be about three times more than the ART multiples (11–12%) in 2008. Given the medical and social impact of multiple births, it is imperative to construct a hospital-based monitoring system for fertility treatments, specially non-ART fertility treatments and multiple births.

The pulsating ZZ Ceti stars cover a narrow range of effective temperatures along the cooling sequence of DA white dwarfs (see, eg., Winget and Fontaine 1982). Fast-photometric searches for pulsating stars in that class have provided strong evidence that the ZZ Ceti phase is an evolutionary phase through which all cooling DA stars will eventually go through (Fontaine et al. 1982). Recent investigations, based on optical or ultraviolet photometry and spectrophotometry, have set the boundaries of the instability strip at temperatures near 10,000-11,000 K and 12,000-13,000 K, respectively (McGraw 1979; Greenstein 1982; Weidemann and Koester 1984; Fontaine et al. 1985; Wesemael, Lamontagne, and Fontaine 1986; Lamontagne, Wesemael, and Fontaine 1987, 1988).

Sociological and social historical approaches to the study of legal transformations have traditionally been marked by a focus on external “social” factors, such as industrialization, class conflict, and social movement activity, that causally determine the form and content of law (Hurst 1956; Friedman 1973; Gordon 1975; Hagan 1980; Humphries and Greenberg 1981; Chambliss and Seidman 1982; Chambliss and Zatz 1993; Kantor and Fishback 1994). More recently, interdisciplinary scholarship on law and society has criticized this view for narrowly reducing law to formal structure—organizational procedures and textual rules—and for its image of unidirectional causation running from society to law (Gordon 1984; Harrington and Yngvesson 1990). The result of this critique has been a growth in interpretive research on law emphasizing ideological analysis of law and depicting relations between law and society as constitutive (Milner 1989: 633).

AbstractA classical result in descriptive complexity theory states that Datalog expresses exactly the class of polynomially computable queries on ordered databases (Papadimitriou 1985; Grädel 1992; Vardi 1982; Immerman 1986; Leivant 1989). In this paper we extend this result to the case of higher-order Datalog. In particular, we demonstrate that on ordered databases, for all k ≥ 2, k-order Datalog captures (k − 1)-EXPTIME. This result suggests that higher-order extensions of Datalog possess superior expressive power and they are worthwhile of further investigation both in theory and in practice.

Much of the current attention to class formation flows from the contemporary concern with larger processes of identity formation (Hanagan 1989; McNall 1988; Tilly 1992). Scholars such as Ira Katznelson and Adam Przeworski have emphasized the contingent character of class identity while, at the same time, reminding us of the need to understand why millions of people in the late nineteenth century chose to band together and fight under banners labeled proletarian (Katznelson 1986; Przeworski 1977).

A recent article (Stanton and Sejnowski 1989) on long-term synaptic depression in the hippocampus has reopened the issue of the computational efficiency of particular synaptic learning rules (Hebb 1949; Palm 1988a; Morris and Willshaw 1989) — homosynaptic versus heterosynaptic and monotonic versus nonmonotonic changes in synaptic efficacy. We have addressed these questions by calculating and maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio, a measure of the potential fidelity of recall, in a class of associative matrix memories. Up to a multiplicative constant, there are three optimal rules, each providing for synaptic depression such that positive and negative changes in synaptic efficacy balance out. For one rule, which is found to be the Stent-Singer rule (Stent 1973; Rauschecker and Singer 1979), the depression is purely heterosynaptic; for another (Stanton and Sejnowski 1989), the depression is purely homosynaptic; for the third, which is a generalization of the first two, and has a higher signal-to-noise ratio, it is both heterosynaptic and homosynaptic. The third rule takes the form of a covariance rule (Sejnowski 1977a,b) and includes, as a special case, the prescription due to Hopfield (1982) and others (Willshaw 1971; Kohonen 1972).

Ringed seals (Phoca hispida) in Thesiger Bay (about 71 °45'N, 125°00'W), in northwestern Amundsen Gulf in the western Canadian Arctic, suffered a failure of pup production in the years before 1987, starting probably in 1984. Pups taken in the summer hunt in the years before 1987 were reported scarce, and in 1987 were only 2.8% of the total 4+ and older. This low reproduction was associated with poor body condition in females and with an age distribution of adults that was weighted toward older animals (the modal year class was the 8+ class). An unusually high proportion of adult females had never reproduced; the median age of first birth was estimated at 8.6 years. By the summer of 1988 the age distribution had changed toward younger animals (modal age 5+), in better condition (by 20%), which had almost all ovulated. Pups were more numerous in the catch. In 1989 pups were very numerous in the catch (142% of the 4+ adults) and the estimated mean ageof first birth had decreased to 5.3 years; almost all 5-year-olds sampled had borne pups. A similar occurrence of low pup production had been documented in the early 1970s, and resumption of reproductive activity had then also been associated with an apparent turnover of the population, the mean age of adults decreasing from 16-17 years when reproduction was low to 10.9 years in the year before reproduction resumed. Long-term data on ringed seals in the western Canadian Arctic has shown an average age at first ovulation of about 5.55 years and first birth just before age 7, about 1 year older than seen in this sample in 1989. Our 1989 sample may have been able to mature earlier because food was temporarily more abundant, or breeding densities temporarily lower, than long-term average values.

During the 1980s, women in country music enjoyed unprecedented success in record sales, television, film, and on pop and country charts. For female performers, many of their achievements were due to their abilities to mold their images to mirror American norms and values, namely increasing political conservatism, the backlashes against feminism and the civil rights movement, celebrations of working and middle class life, and the rise of the South. This dissertation divides the 1980s into three distinct periods and then discusses the changing uses of gender, race, class, and region in female country music and links each to larger historical themes. It concludes that political and social conservatism influenced women’s country performances and personas. In this way, female country music is a social text that can be used to examine 1980s America.

This new form of multiattribute utility optimization is based on ordinal as opposed to cardinal utility and is defined from a corresponding integer programming model in operations research which (1) is solved for ordinal cost factors and (2) serves as the problem's theoretical starting point.

It is suggested herein that one start with a mathematical formulation that if solved in an acceptable or -- preferably -- best manner would yield a satisfactory or possibly best solution to the problem. Then, that mathematical formulation and its solution technique defines the multiattribute utility problem and its solution at issue. This is the reverse of what is usually done; and as will be shown, doing this can be quite fruitful.

The illustrative example concerns a mathematical 1 formulation based on operation research's assignment problem. As will be argued, the cost factors must be ordinal, which essentially corresponds to using ordinal utility; hence the technique will be framed in the realm of ordinal utility.

The technique for solving the illustrative example's mathematical formulation is to achieve a premium mix of operations research solution properties. From this perspective, some sticky issues in multiattribute utility theory when the attributes involve the preferences of distinct persons are not included in the philosophical base for the multiattribute utility problem and its solution thusly defined.

This study explored the relationship between L.D.S. seminary discontinuation and the characteristics of individual dropouts. It also sought to identify distinguishing characteristics of students who continue enrollment in seminary. The seminary teachers and the program itself were considered for their impact on a student's decision to continue attendance. Major factors such as peer associations, Priesthood involvement, parental influence and recruitment practices were considered. The roll of public school academic requirements in connection with premature seminary dissociation were also investigated. Initially a sample of dropout and continuing students form Southern Arizona were interviewed using an open-ended, semi-structured format. This process elicited data in four major domains: (1) discriminating personal characteristics; (2) external factors; (3) structural factors; and (4) church related factors. The responses were analyzed and used to develop a second questionnaire. This second survey was then administered to a larger sample of dropout and continuing students throughout Arizona.

This study offers an analysis of representations of white, heterosexual, working-class masculinities in British culture between 1945 and 1989. As the period that saw the establishment of the Welfare State, and the construction and breakdown of the post-war consensus in British politics, this is a period of great significance in the formation and maintenance of working-class masculinities and their correspondent representations. The study aims to reinstate class as a central precept in the study of British cultural representations and uses Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of ‘habitus’ and Judith Butler’s concept of ‘performativity’ to demonstrate that the categories of class and gender are discursively constructed (Bourdieu, 2008: 170, Butler, 2008: 206). In doing so the research is able to draw from Michel Foucault’s archaeological methodology to engage with the discursive formations that constitute these categories and thus engage with both the historical continuities and the historical discontinuities, or ruptures, that constitute the category of ‘working-class masculinity’ in any given period. Within this process Raymond Williams’s concept of ‘structures of feeling’ is employed as a practical means of charting these discursive shifts within cultural representations (1977: 132). The texts studied here clearly demonstrate the extent to which the historical shifts, which become apparent as ‘structures of feeling’ and are loosely aligned with decades here, created a different, often divergent, set of demands within the category of ‘workingclass man’. These demands were both novel, in that the desires, expectations and aspirations of working-class men altered over time, and familiar, as for much of the latetwentieth century these demands remain rooted in the performative practices of what I term a ‘traditional’ working-class masculinity. The study charts the loss of these ‘traditional’ working-class masculinities as postmodern culture, ‘disorganized capitalism’ and the ‘crisis of the knowable community’ eroded or irrevocably altered the precepts upon which they were founded (Lash and Urry, 1993: 229, Williams, 1974: 14). The study shows the ideological nature of the categories of ‘working-class masculinities’ and demonstrates that what was, would, and could be said about workingclass men profoundly altered between 1945 and 1989. Ultimately the study demonstrates how this shift in discourse effected what it meant to be a working-class man in Britain.

The objective of this research is to investigate and analyze how Veja magazine made the cover over the role of class organizations (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) between the years 1985-1989. We assume that Veja magazine acts as a private apparatus of hegemony, since it proposes referrals, organize, create consensus and shares its world view with a certain fraction of the bourgeois class, in this period studied we concluded that Veja get closer of the fractions of the bourgeois class industrial business of the Brazil. The time frame of the research included the years 1985-1989, it was a remarkable period in Brazilian history, due to "end the military dictatorship" (but not the end of the rubble of authoritarian military dictatorship, once that, Constitution remained in force for the period of dictatorship until August 1988, the repression to the social movements and forms of mobilization and organization of the working class, the illegality of the strike, the permanence of the Ministry of Armed Forces and National Security all coordinated by the military), the promulgation of the New Constitution and with it the legality of the strike for some categories and the intensification of class struggle. Due to these factors the dissertation sought to discuss, analyze, investigate from the materials of the Veja magazine how it made the cover of the economic plans implemented during the years 1985 -1989 and the consequences for the working class. So as well as investigate the coverage that the magazine Veja made about the acting of the class organizations (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) in the period 1985-1989 and the clashes between these organizations
O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar e analisar de que forma a revista Veja fez a cobertura sobre a atuação das organizações de classe (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) entre os anos de 1985-1989. Partimos do pressuposto que a revista Veja age enquanto um aparelho privado de hegemonia, já que propõe encaminhamentos, organiza, cria consenso e compartilha sua visão de mundo com uma determinada fração da classe burguesa, nesse período estudado concluímos que Veja se aproxima das frações da classe burguesa empresarial industrial do Brasil. O recorte temporal da pesquisa compreendeu os anos de 1985-1989, pois foi um período marcante na história brasileira, devido ao fim da ditadura militar (mas não o fim do entulho autoritário da ditadura militar, uma vez que, permaneceu vigente a Constituição do período da ditadura até agosto de 1988, a repressão aos movimentos sociais e formas de mobilização e organização da classe trabalhadora, ilegalidade da greve, permanência do Ministério das Forças Armadas e da Segurança Nacional todas coordenadas por militares), a promulgação da Nova Constituição e com ela a legalidade da greve para algumas categorias e a intensificação da luta de classes. Devido a esses elementos a pesquisa procurou discutir, analisar, investigar a partir das matérias da revista Veja, como a mesma fez a cobertura dos planos econômicos implantados durante os anos de 1985-1989 e as consequências para a classe trabalhadora, bem como investigar a cobertura que a revista Veja fez sobre a atuação das organizações de classe (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) no período de 1985-1989 e os embates entre essas organizações

This research presents an analysis on the use of the class record book at Escola Técnica Federal de São Paulo (São Paulo Technical School - ETFSP), an Autonomous Entity Education Establishment, originally arising from the Escola de Aprendizes Artífices (School of Apprentices and Artifices - EAA) which, for almost forty years (1959-1998), formed Secondary Education technicians in the Capital City of São Paulo, in order to meet the Brazilian Industrial Market at that period. After several renewals and names, it is currently called Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo (São Paulo Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology - IFSP). The main document sources are sets of class record books filled out by professors who ministered technical (specific) and general culture (propedeutics) classes at the Mechanics Regular Course of ETFSP between 1986 and 1989. Aiming at investigating the relationship between the class record books and the school material culture and its ordinary writing with reflections and development of the teaching practice, a qualitative research is made, centered in the analysis methodology of the contents registered. The theories in which the research are based on have support from teaching practice studies, documents and school archives inserted in the school material culture field. In that direction, the investigation relevance is also related to the fact that it historically discusses not only the document itself by also its uses and needs. The results obtained in the research indicate that the class record book it is not seen by the individuals involved as a support, reflection and teaching practice development tool, but as a procedural document for the description of tasks undertaken in the classroom, solidifying the culture of bureaucratic documents and inspection of the teaching work, even though ETFSP considers it a support tool for pedagogical activities
Esta pesquisa apresenta uma análise sobre uso do diário de classe na Escola Técnica Federal de São Paulo (ETFSP), estabelecimento de ensino autárquico, oriunda da Escola de Aprendizes Artífices (EAA) que, durante quase quarenta anos (1959-1998) de existência, formou técnicos de nível de 2º grau na capital paulista para atender ao mercado industrial brasileiro. Após várias transformações, com diferentes nomenclaturas, atualmente é denominado de Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo (IFSP). As fontes documentais principais são os conjuntos de diários de classes produzidos pelos professores que ministraram aulas em disciplinas técnicas (específicas) e de cultura geral (propedêuticas) no Curso Técnico Regular em Mecânica da ETFSP, especificamente entre os anos de 1986 e 1989. Tendo como objetivo investigar a relação do diário de classe com a cultura material escolar e da sua escrita ordinária com uma reflexão e desenvolvimento da prática docente, realiza-se uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, centrada na metodologia de análise dos conteúdos ali registrados. As teorias que fundamentam a pesquisa estão apoiadas em estudos sobre a prática docente, documentos e arquivos escolares que se inserem no campo da cultura material escolar. Nesse sentido, a pertinência da investigação se coloca também por problematizar historicamente não apenas o documento em si, mas também seus usos e necessidades. Os resultados obtidos na pesquisa indicam que o diário de classe não é visto pelos sujeitos envolvidos como uma ferramenta de apoio, reflexão e desenvolvimento da prática pedagógica docente, mas como um documento procedimental para a descrição das tarefas realizadas no interior da sala de aula, solidificando a cultura de documento burocrático e de controle e fiscalização do trabalho docente, ainda que a ETFSP o tenha como ferramenta de apoio para subsidiar as ações pedagógicas

Abstract In this chapter, researchers offer their own experiences through an extended dialogue between a long-term outdoor educator in Australia and a researcher of outdoor education in Canada. They engage and share their conversations in order to highlight the ways in which outdoor education as an industry and academic field perpetuates systems of racial and gender oppression. Although the chapter centres on racial and gender discrimination embedded in outdoor education policy and practices, the conversation also presents the ways in which class further entrenches systemic discrimination. Each axis of oppression works intersectionally to create unequal material conditions, further marginalizing people and communities who are not white, middle-class and/or male (Crenshaw, 1989; hooks, 2015; Taylor, 2017).

Abstract DNA topoisomerases are a class of enzymes that modulate the topo logical structure of DNA. Since the discovery of the first topoisomerase 20 years ago (Wang 1971), many of the properties of this class of enzymes have been elucidated and this progress has been the subject of many reviews (Cozzarelli 1980; Gellert 1981; Liu 1983; Drlica 1984; Wang 1985, 1987b; Maxwell and Gellert 1986; Yanagida and Wang 1987; Osheroff 1989a; Austin and Fisher 1990, Champoux 1990; Hsieh 1990;.Osheroff et al. 1991). In purified systems, topoisomerases relax supercoiled DNA, and can tie and untie DNA knots, and link and unlink catenated DNA circles. In eukaryotic cells, type I topoisomerases are associated with elongating transcription and replication forks, while type II topoisomerases are essential for segregating daughter chromosomes after DNA replication is complete (Yanagida and Wang 1987). Topoisomerases are also the target of a number of antineoplastic and antibacterial agents whose cytotoxic effects appear to arise from the stabilization of a complex between the topoisomerase and DNA (Ross 1985; Glisson and Ross 1987; Drlica and Franco 1988; Liu 1989; Smith 1990).

Abstract By most accounts, the chemistry of nitrones is dominated by aldol condensations and addition reactions, as this functional group mirrors the reactivity of aldehydes and ketones (Bonnett, et al., 1959; Hamer and Macaluso, 1964; Torssell, 1988). The similarity of structure to these carbonyl groups plays a major role in the synthesis of this class of spin traps. In other situations, the reactivity of this func tional group can initiate unwanted side reactions, masking the ability to decipher whether a biologic event is mediated by a free radical (Forrester and Hepburn, 1971). For instance, one only needs to be mindful of the difficulty in assigning the source of DMPO-OH to appreciate the myriad of complex reactions involving these compounds (Floyd and Wiseman, 1979; Chew and Bolton, 1980; Nohl, et al., 1981; Tero-Kubota, et al., 1982; Rosen and Rauckman, 1984; Chandra and Symons, 1986; Janzen, et al., 1987; Makino, et al., 1989, 1990a, 1990b, 1992; Buettner and Mason, 1990; Hanna, et al., 1992; Nishi, et al., 1992; Rosen, et al., 1994).

Abstract Plants constitute a considerable proportion of the human daily diet, with most foodplants providing non-toxic carbohydrates, proteins, or fats; others contain more or less toxic constituents which belong to the so-called secondary metabolites. One class of potentially toxic constituents are the cyanogenic glycosides. Several reviews already exist on their structure variation and distribution in the plant kingdom (Nahrstedt 1992; Seigler 1992) and in insects (Nahrstedt 1988); on their biology (Nahrstedt 1987), biochemistry and metabolism (Conn 1991), and toxicity (Conn 1979; Montgomery 1979; Oke 1980); and on their occurrence in and significance for foodplants of man and animals (Oke 1979; Nartey 1981; Poulton 1983, 1988a, 1990). Reviews concerning isolation and structure elucidation (Nahrstedt 1981; Seigler and Brinker, 1992) as well as liberation, detection, and quantification of hydrogen cyanide as the most important product of degradation have been published (Nahrstedt et al. 1981; Brinker and Seigler 1989).

<em>Abstract.</em>—This paper reviews and describes the status of stocks, fisheries, and management of Chinook salmon <em>Oncorhynchus tshawytscha </em>in the Yukon River. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) manages the Yukon commercial and subsistence fisheries in the Alaskan portion of the drainage and by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans in the portion in Yukon Territory. The salmon are managed to achieve escapement goals for spawning, to maintain sustained production based upon perceived run strength, and to accomplish approved fishery management plans. The Chinook salmon stocks of the Yukon River have experienced considerable variation in abundance and harvest over the past 50 years. After experiencing poor runs from 1998–2000, Chinook salmon escapement goals have been generally met throughout the Alaska portion of the Yukon River drainage during the past five years, 2004–2008. Typically, about 50% of the Chinook salmon reproduction occurs in Canada. The escapement goal into Canada was not met in 2007 and 2008. The average escapement to the Canadian portion of the Yukon River drainage from 2004 to 2008 was 49,500 Chinook salmon (range 32,500 to 68,500 fish), which was similar to the historical baseline ten-year average (1989–1998) of 50,800 fish. The age-class composition of the Canadian-origin Chinook salmon return from brood-years 1979–1998 indicated a decrease in age-7 salmon from an average of 22% from brood years 1979–1982 to an average of only 8% from brood years 1983–2000. In Alaska, the five-year (2004–2008) average commercial and subsistence combined harvest of 86,573 Chinook salmon was a 55% decrease from 1989 to 1998 average of 156,092 fish. In Canada, total harvest from all sources (domestic, aboriginal, sport, and commercial) from 1980 to 1997 ranged between 10,729 and 22,896 fish. The ten year (1999–2008) average total harvest of 8,739 Chinook salmon was 81% below the lower end of this range. While certainly challenges exist, careful management through the regulation of the fisheries to permit adequate escapements for spawning should ensure the sustainability of the resource for future generations.

The slow rates of peptide bond isomerization in imino acids and the substantial population of the cis peptide bond isomer in Xaa-Pro linkages in peptides were first recognized in NMR studies of proline-containing model compounds (Maia et al., 1971). The important role of this isomerization in protein stability and folding (reviewed by Kim and Baldwin, 1982, 1990; Schmid, 1993) were recognized several years later (Brandts et al., 1975) and the biological relevance of this process was substantiated by the discovery of a ubiquitous enzyme that catalyzes Xaa-Pro peptide bond isomerization (Fischer et al., 1984, 1989; Takahashi et al., 1989). The strict evolutionary conservation of some prolyl residues and the observation that the kinetics of interconversion between alternative functional forms of some systems is consistent with the time scale of proline isomerization suggest that proline isomerization may play a wide role in protein structure and function. Suggestive examples include the sodium pump of Escherichia coli, the disulfide isomerase/thioredoxin class of enzymes, concanavalin A, and bovine prothrornbin fragment I (Brown et al., 1977; Marsh et al, 1979; Dunker, 1982; Brandland Deber, 1986; Langsetmo et al, 1989). NMR spectroscopy is one of the most suitable tools for studying this isomerization reaction. The rates generally are slow on the time scale of NMR chemical shifts but, in favorable cases, are comparable to longitudinal relaxation rates so that the isomerization process can be investigated by chemical exchange spectroscopy. NMR data obtained on calbindin D9k (Chazin et al., 1989), insulin (Higgins et al., 1988), and staphylococcal nuclease (nuclease) as discussed below have shown that each exists in solution under native conditions as a mixture of slowly exchanging conformers. The fact that dynamic molecular heterogeneity in nuclease was first observed in the laboratory of Oleg Jardetzky, as manifested by splitting of the histidyl 1H ε1 resonance from His46 in one-dimensional 1H NMR spectra recorded at 100 MHz (Markley et al., 1970), makes this topic particularly appropriate to a volume celebrating his scientific contributions.

Dow Chemical, U. S. A., is currently operating two Westinghouse W501D5 combustion turbines with synthetic gas from the commercial demonstration coal gasification unit at Plaquemine, Louisiana. The first of these units was fueled with synthetic gas in April 1987. This conversion followed several years of experimentation and prototype work by Dow and Westinghouse. The second unit began operating with synthetic gas during September 1987. Addition of synthetic gas capability to these combustion turbines, originally installed in December 1982 and May 1983, was relatively straightforward, and once installed, did not adversely affect their operation or efficiency on natural gas, or mixtures in various proportions with synthetic gas. For durability assessment, special instrumentation was maintained at the site in the months immediately following conversion. This facilitated making minor changes to improve combustor longevity. The heat recovery units were modified for synthetic gas operation to improve corrosion resistance and to handle higher temperatures. Minor adjustments were made in the controls to accommodate changing gas flow. Emission monitoring was enhanced.

The Panamanian economy performed spectacularly starting in 1989, growing at an average real rate of 6% per year for thirty years. It was the highest registered in the Latin American Region and one of the highest globally. In addition, important achievements were obtained that were not achieved in other countries inside and outside the region. The middle class expanded and strengthened. The general poverty level fell from 37.9% in 2000 to 21.5% in 2019, and the extreme poverty level from 21.9% to 10.0%, mainly due to transfers from low-income households. Income inequalities improved by reducing the GINI coefficient from 56.6% in 2000 to 49.8% in 2019, although these were high concerning other Latin American countries. As a result, Panama entered the group of countries classified as high-income by the World Bank. Plus, the economy has recently been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic—this immobilized economic activity due to the high population. Density and contagion in the metropolitan area caused by overcrowding in low-income neighborhoods extend its destructive impact on the rest of the country. This required reducing and temporarily closing commercial, service, and production activities. These actions caused a sharp drop in GDP and GDP per capita, the largest in the region and one of the largest in percentage terms globally, a sharp contraction of imports, a rapid expansion of unemployment, a collapse in tax revenues, financial difficulties in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and a loss of income in low-income and informal groups, and in those of the middle class with suspended employment contracts. A post-Covid-19 growth recovery should not be defined as a return to pre-pandemic levels of economic activity likely to external shocks but as a turning point towards more productive, shock-resistant, and inclusive growth patterns. Growth will happen, although it could be slow and gradual initially. A significant part of daily economic activity operates in a consumer economy environment. At this juncture, it will be essential for consumers to secure their income to maintain a standard spending rate in a context in which the pandemic's adverse impact on Panamanians' health is diminishing.

Current standards and regulations for gas transmission pipelines classify pipeline corridors into location classes and specify design factors accordingly. In the U.S., the current class location system was developed in the 1950's to mitigate increased potential of equipment impact due to frequent excavation activities in developed areas (Shires and Harrison 1998, Michalopoulos and Babka 2000). By using relatively low design factors for populated areas, the increased wall thickness provides extra protection to resist equipment impact with corresponding increase in costs. The primary objectives of this project were to examine the current class location system and develop supplementary criteria that would enhance pipeline safety by applying risk-based or reliability-based methods. This report covers four related topics dealing with 1. assessment area, 2. end boundary between different class locations, 3. enhanced prevention and maintenance for class upgrade, and 4. development of a new safety class system.

The paper analyses aspects of trade liberalization and the political economy of protection in Brazil since 1987. Section I considers the internal and external constraints to the continued adoption of a strategy based on import substitution industrialization. In section II trade liberalization up to 1994 is described including its adjustments related to the creation of Mercosur. It also places trade liberalization in the context of the wider reforms implemented in Brazil in the 1990s. The impacts of trade liberalization on import penetration, productivity and the cost of investment as well as its distributive effects are examined in section III. The relative importance of trade liberalization and inflation acceleration on the cost of investment is also discussed. Section IV deals with the political economy of trade liberalization and the protectionist backlash in the mid-1990s. An analysis is made of long-term factor mobility and the Brazilian case is compared with findings on other economies about the transition from a political economy of protection centered on the clash of "class interests" to one concerned with "special interests".
