Abstract This paper starts on the premise that comedy performed in vernacular languages in Kenya has proliferated over the last two decades. Specific focus is on Gĩkũyũ language plays performed by Fanaka Arts, a theatre company based in Nairobi. I settle on three titles namely Nyoori Momori, Tũirio Twega and ITINA SACCO to demonstrate that: (a) these plays draw inspiration and thematic material from the everyday social cultural and political experiences and (b) they employ vernacular language and various literary techniques to provide entertainment as well as to impart didactic values to the audience. One feature that is common in the three plays is the marriage motif; there are convergences and divergences in the ways each reference and parody marriage, infidelity, urbanity, politics, and unpopular government policies. The key question I ask is: what makes these plays appealing to the audiences? References to the body as well as descriptions of sexuality in veiled figurative language are other common features in these plays. As such, it is the libidinous metaphors and sexual innuendoes in the titles of these lewd comedies that make them attractive to the audiences in Nairobi. Apart from being a form of entertainment, these monthly theatre performances in Gĩkũyũ language enable the urban middle class to connect with their village and cultural roots. Moreover, through comedy, they articulate what may be considered as trite social-cultural issues in ways that other conventional media may not achieve. As such, these comedies make people to reflect upon and laugh at themselves concomitantly. The hilarious depictions of various social concerns can also be considered as subversive and aesthetic means of political critique.

Annotation:

Public participation in the planning process is a well established concept and an important one to municipal planners as they deal with the question of how to most effectively involve citizens in planning. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of techniques and processes used to involve the public in a specific planning process: the preparation of official community plans in British Columbia. Two principal methods are used to achieve this purpose: a literature review and a comparative analysis of the experiences of four municipalities located in the greater Vancouver region which have recently completed of official community plans. Data for this analysis came from municipal documents, interviews with planners and field observation. Six process-oriented objectives based on democratic principles are established as criteria of effective public participation. The six criteria are: (1) Accessibility - All citizens have the opportunity and are encouraged to participate; (2) Timing - The public is provided with information and opportunities to participate at crucial decision making points in the planning process. (3) Impartiality - No individual or group is permitted to dominate the participation process at the expense of others; (4) Comprehensibility - Important information is provided and is presented in such a way that it is understood by those whom it affects; (5) Alternatives - The public is presented with a range of alternatives; (6) Efficacy - Participators' views are considered in products of the planning process. The suitability of each participation technique and combination of techniques used in the four municipalities is assessed by these six objectives. Nine summary observations derived from the analysis are presented as suggestions to help planners effectively involve the public in future official community plan processes. It is found that effort to involve citizens in the preparation of an official community plan must go beyond the techniques required or suggested by legislation. A public hearing and an advisory planning commission are not sufficient to provide effective participation. It is not possible to state an ideal public participation program with a set of specific techniques that would be useful in all communities preparing an official community plan. However, by designing and implementing a participation program that strives to satisfy the process-oriented objectives, planners can obtain meaningful response from the public. Achieving these objectives depends foremost on administrative commitment.

AbstractUrban energy planning plays an essential role in guiding human settlements, from a neighborhood scale to a megacity scale, to a sustainable future. It is particularly challenging to integrate energy planning into the urban planning process, considering the urban system’s complexity, multi-objective decision making, and multi-stakeholder involvement. In this context, recent years have witnessed a significant development of urban building energy modeling (UBEM). With a trend toward performance-based urban planning, there is a rising need to introduce proper UBEM tools into the different planning phases. The main objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of the UBEM tools across different urban planning phases, as well as to discuss to what extent these tools could provide decision-making support to stakeholders. The chapter starts with a brief discussion on emerging energy-related issues in urban development and why the conventional planning approach needs the integration of modeling tools to provide a quantitative evaluation to better respond to these new challenges. The state of the art of UBEM also is reviewed, followed by a description of the applications and limitations in different planning phases. Finally, several challenges and opportunities regarding energy-modeling-assistance urban planning are discussed.

AbstractEducation plays a key role in knowledge society, since, from a meritocratic perspective, it opens up fair opportunities for well-paid jobs, thereby increasing social mobility and well-being more generally. In order to foster their economic competitiveness, cities are therefore encouraged to engage in knowledge-based urban development by trying to provide good schools and world-class universities to attract the “creative class.” However, meritocracy is a “myth,” as access to educational opportunities is itself socially biased. With the example of Heidelberg, a so-called “knowledge pearl,” we show how knowledge-institutions, such as the university, may shape socioenvironmental contexts in ways conducive to spatially selective access to—and use of—educational opportunities. Instead of reducing social polarization, knowledge-institutions may instead (re-)produce inequalities.

AbstractEconomy and society today face a multitude of complex challenges (“grand challenges”) like climate change, demographic change, urbanization, or digitalization, which create a constant demand for new technologies, services, business models, and consequently innovative solutions. In this light, the mobility sector has undergone a great change over the past few years, which is formed by digital technologies on a large scale. Against this background, this article will demonstrate, based on the example of the iCity research project, to what extent the research design of transdisciplinary living labs can serve as a basis for the development of innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. At the same time, the influence of digitalization which plays a major role in developing real implementable solutions for such challenges will be examined.

AbstractSocial security is an essential thing needed by everyone, including employment social security for Indonesian workers. The Penggerak Jaminan Sosial Indonesia (PERISAI), an agent in social security, plays an essential role in conveying the benefits of the existing social security program to protect workers. PERISAI’s competencies play a vital role in achieving maximum results in delivering information and participant acquisition. One appropriate method consistent in determining PERISAI’s competencies is the Analytical Hierarchy Process method. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a compelling and comprehensive methodology that enables groups and individuals to link qualitative factors in the decision-making process. AHP uses a hierarchical model consisting of objectives, criteria (and several sub-criteria), and alternatives for each decision. This method was used with field surveys and field data collection to distribute the questionnaires (for this method). PERISAI’s creativity is the most influential competency in increasing the participation of Social Health Insurance Administration Body (BPJS) Employment in the Medan City Branch. In other words, in conducting recruitment for PERISAI, it is necessary to pay attention to creative competence.

Abstract A new data-driven method for production forecasting and estimating ultimate recovery (EUR) of tight-gas sand and unconventional-shale wells is proposed as an alternative to empirical decline-curve analysis (DCA) methods and industry standard type-well curves. The proposed method requires generating a dimensionless recovery profile (DRP) from the production history of mature wells producing from an analogous reservoir where ultimate recovery is determinable with a high degree of confidence. The daily and/or monthly production data of a newer well selected for analysis is made dimensionless by using an initial estimate of EUR and observed maximum production rate. The best dimensionless match to the DRP is obtained by adjusting the EUR and maximum rate the well could have potentially produced if unencumbered by operational constraints. The proposed method does not utilize pressure data, so it is suitable for use with data available from public sources. Often, only 60 to 90 days of daily data is required to provide a good estimate of future production performance and EUR. One capability of the proposed method is the performance characteristics of the ratios of the secondary phases to the primary fluid phase can be simultaneously examined to better define the expected production performance and to identify wells with uncharacteristic behavior. EnerQuest Oil & Gas, L.L.C. has successfully applied this method in its producing property acquisition and drilling evaluation work for the last 25 years and the biggest revelation is that the resulting DRP of the primary phase, for most plays, is the same regardless of a well's geographic location within the play, generation of its completion design or length of lateral. The derivation of the DRP using individual well production histories across an entire play has the advantage/benefit of a larger population of data to work with than the common industry standard method of developing a type-well curve that is specific to a much smaller population of wells sharing similar horizontal landing targets and completion designs. The new method will be demonstrated utilizing production data from the Barnett Shale (N Texas), Austin Chalk (S Texas), Eagle Ford Shale (S Texas), Codell Sand (SE Wyoming), Woodford Shale (SE Oklahoma), and Utica Shale (Ohio).

Blue-Green Infrastructure systems are essential and valuable solutions for urban and rural areas which are facing climate change problem. As climate change negatively affects vegetation systems, water systems, and life cycles, blue-green infrastructure solutions enhance the urban and rural landscape. The system combines the green and water networks and also manages stormwater. BGI develops a variety of urban ecological, economic, social functions, and also urban sustainability and liveability. In addition to these, the systems decrease the need of grey infrastructure and the negative impacts on urban ecology. BGI plays a specific role on development of stream and coastal systems, and also urban green areas. The system emphasizes the protection of hydrologic system and hydrodynamic processes, accordingly, water management systems which consist of rain gardens, green roofs, vertical greening systems, and permeable pavements are used. In the scope of the study, creation of Sponge City with Blue-Green Infrastructure systems and the construction processes are scrutinized. In connection with the idea, sponge city design tools are described.

There are two new persons born each and every second on Earth, persons that will need space to live, just as we do. Should we build new cities, then, without question? The “population of a single day” is going to require territory, which, according to today’s standards, equals the area of France or Ukraine (Zipser). Therefore villages, cities and especially metropolises require much more space for expansion. Things become problematic when metropolises are faced with a lack of space to expand Metropolises behave like cancerous tumors – they try to possess or occupy any urban structure within their reach, including agricultural lands and forests. Is it even possible to plan such a rapid growth? Certain cases point to the fact that it is indeed possible, while others – that it is not possible at all. Thus, we are faced with the question of what should we do when the development of metropolises outpaces even the fastest planning processes? In these cases, metropolitan authorities need to anticipate problems related to infrastructure, transportation, as well as unemployment and rising crime rates. The metropolitan way of life causes not only spatial, but also social problems as well. The subdivisions within the social structures of metropolises are transformed in accordance with the quality of their spatial structures and vice versa. The question as to who “owns” the public spaces of metropolises is more important than the real ownership of the land they are built upon. Public spaces become an expression of their respective metropolises through the image of their urban and architectural forms. The inhabitants and people “that are coming in” can only identify themselves with and respect the rules of the space that they live, work and relax in only under the condition of the existence of spatial order. Contrary to those metropolitan areas that have been abandoned or are underused, the social aspect of reusing land that has once been converted from an agricultural form of use, or any other for that matter, plays an important part in the appropriate creation of social and spatial balance in the development of public spaces, as well as modern metropolises, oriented towards innovative technologies.

This paper presents the process and the results of a cartographic exploration on the interactions between the military and the civil society. It features two interrelated study-cases : the cities of Skopje and Bitola, both characterised by consequent periods of war and strong army presence. Frequent and often abrupt changes of occupying military power combined with the local effects of ever-evolving military strategy, altogether having a dramatic impact upon their urban landscapes and the overall territorial settings. The proposed method of exploration includes the study and processing of archival sources as well as the creation of novel interpretative maps. The former includes a critical analysis of historical and contemporary cartographies, taking into account the specific agency of mapping and its embedded politics. As for the later, two series of eight maps each are created, offering a diachronic as well as a synchronic reading of the history of the local militarised landscapes. Through the simultaneous deconstruction of archival maps and the construction of interpretative maps, the research approaches the interaction of the military and the city in a twofold way: on the one hand revealing process of appropriation through the act of mapping -in which the specific agency of the military plays a significant role, and on the other hand constructing a palimpsests of urban and territorial army-related narratives that enables the formation and transmission of the city's memory.

Abstract The combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling unlocked a huge energy potential in the US. The unconventional plays have been developed by drilling several horizontal wells and hydraulically fracturing them to enhance the fluid flow. The implementation of these well can be done at the same time, known as Tank Development; however, due to the high capital expenditure and the increased risks associated with such an approach, in addition to the limited number of available drilling rigs. Operators try to hold the lease first by drilling one well, producing it, then extending the lease with additional wells. The challenge is that by producing from these wells, the stress and pore pressure state changes around the first wells (i.e., parent well). These changes directly affect the hydraulic fracture propagation from the offset wells (i.e., child wells). In this work, we build a numerical that represents a real case study. The model was calibrated using data from (a) Microseismic Depletion Delineation, (b) Microseismic events, (c) 10 years of production. Synthetic offset wells were implemented to run a sensitivity analysis on the well design (well spacing, cluster spacing, injection volume) and to understand how to design better wells that have been influenced by production from a primary well. The simulations were run for 10 years. The results show that wider well spacing results in better production, whereas lower cluster spacing had better production. This study allows operators to design better offset wells drilled next to a depleted parent well in the Bakken.

Accordingly, this study utilizes Town-Plan Analysis (Conzen, 1960) to deconstruct the relationships between industrialization and settlement formation in order to illustrate the common origin of cities in Taiwan as a result of the emerging economy at the turn of the 20th century. The industrial city of Huwei, known as the “sugar city” with largest yields of cane sugar in Taiwan, had the largest-scale sugar refinery in pre-war East Asia (Williams, 1980). The city has grown and transformed with the factory during the four phases of morphological periods, which began at the establishment of the sugar refinery and worker housing in the middle of the fertile flooding plain in western Taiwan. The spatial arrangement was directed to operational and management efficiency, characterized by the simple grids and hierarchy of layout along the riverside. As the industry enlarged, the new urban core was planned to support the original settlement with shophouses accumulated in the small grids. Followed by postwar modernism (Schinz, 1989), the urban planning again extended the city boundary with larger and polygonal blocks. In the fourth phase, however, the sugar refinery downsized, leading to the conversion of the worker housing and the merging of the factory and the city that slowly brought to its present shape. The morphological process results in the concentric structure from the sugar refinery, providing valuable references for the preservation of the sugar industry townscape, and unveils the influence of industrialization as well as the special urban development pattern in Taiwan. The ethnic nature of the constitution of the national republics of the Russian Federation suggests that, to some extent, they are characterized by the institutionalization of ethnicity, which manifests itself at the normative level, in particular, in the structure of government bodies, their representation in public space, in the distribution of political and administrative positions based on ethnicity (power-sharing). Institutionalization of ethnicity occurs not only at the republican level, but also in the authorities of the capital cities of the ethnic republics. In relation to the structure of government bodies and their representation, it is expressed here to a lesser extent, however, the position of the mayor of the capital city plays a significant role in the informal institutionalization of the distribution of political and administrative positions along ethnic lines.

Abstract In the development of shale plays, significant emphasis has been laid on forecasting well performance based on rates and finding the expected ultimate recoveries. Specifically, forecasting producing gas-oil-ratio (GOR) over the long term has been problematic, given the complexities and uncertainties in modeling a muti-stage fractured horizontal well in the unconventional reservoir. In this work, we propose a hybrid model which is capable of accurately forecasting multiphase flow rates. The proposed hybrid forecasting modeling is an amalgamation of data-centric methodology blended with physics-based principles, using easily available inputs such as production rates, flowing pressure, and fluid properties. The proposed method is a two-step procedure – (1) detect the inflection point up to which the gas produced is only the solution gas using an automated trajectory detection procedure, imposing physics-based constraints (2), apply the material balance to calculate dynamic drainage volume, average reservoir pressure, and productivity index that are used to forecast well performance in the future. The proposed approach also handles changing artificial lift strategies and hence changing bottom hole pressure conditions, which is a practical consideration since most unconventional wells experience operational changes throughout their lifecycle. The automated trajectory detection procedure consistently captures the inflection point for all wells and is robust to scale for all well types. The history-matched multiphase flow model parameters are blind-tested to validate the model. The proposed technique extrapolates reservoir pressure depletion based on established trends to forecast GOR trends with reasonable accuracy at an extremely low computational cost. The proposed hybrid model overcomes (1) deficiencies of pure data-driven approaches, where changes in operating conditions are not properly represented and the forecasts are not physically consistent, (2) limitations of analytical models, where the assumptions are too many/strict to represent the real-life performance of a multifracture horizontal well, and (3) complexities of numerical simulation models, which are expensive, time-consuming and requires too many inputs for initialization. Additionally, the proposed hybrid model provides a robust and scalable method to identify future GOR trends to support the pace of operations and data-driven decision-making.

Recife is a prominent front-runner for climate policymaking in Brazil, having formulated robust plans and strategies at the city scale. The next step is to overcome the gap between strategic planning and local action at the neighbourhood scale. Historically, urban development in Recife has been marked by social inequalities. To ensure social inclusion and justice in climate action, it is critical to open up governance structures to include bottom-up, community-based approaches and incentivize co-production of urban space between governmental and non-governmental actors. Climate action can build on opportunities to also tackle inequalities in Recife, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities. To support this goal, social indicators can be used next to traditional emissions data to assess how transformative climate action is in the city. The climate agenda should be mainstreamed into urban development in Recife, particularly in the context of upgrading informal and low-income settlements. Capacity development and awareness raising activities drawing on local expertise, knowledge and practices can facilitate that.

Freight represents approximately 30% of all transportation-related emissions in the U.S., but local climate action plans (CAPs) and freight plans often place limited emphasis on freight emissions reduction strategies. The objective of this report is to examine and present strategies for the City of San José, California to reduce GHG emissions from freight. The authors conducted a geospatial analysis of freight data related to San José, and an analysis of relevant literature and successful freight reduction strategies implemented globally. The report also provides key objectives and generalized strategies to reduce GHG emissions from freight as well as specific recommendations for San José. The analysis and recommendations can guide future transportation planning within San José and help inform other municipalities seeking to reduce their own community wide freight emissions.

While it is the jurisdiction with the highest per capita gross domestic product (GDP) in Argentina, there are historically marked differences in socioeconomic levels and socio-environmental conditions between the north and the south of the city of Buenos Aires. The effects of climate change are intertwined with those of economic globalization, a process of “double exposure” that disproportionately affects particular social groups and areas in the city. Slums and informal settlements in Buenos Aires are growing in size. Most face significant resource and infrastructure deficits, as well as high flood risk, and are thus highly vulnerable to the effects of a changing climate. Tackling climate change in Buenos Aires requires integrated adaptation and mitigation approaches that put the most vulnerable at the centre. The ongoing socio-urban integration processes in informal settlements represent opportunities to rethink and territorialize climate action from an integrated habitat perspective. Since the early 2000s, Buenos Aires has built a robust track record of climate policy, including a climate change law and three Climate Action Plans (PACs). The city has also long been a hotbed for social movements, with a recent resurgence of “the right to the city,” defined as the right of urban dwellers to build, decide and create the city. This provides fertile ground for climate justice narratives and transformative climate action to take root. More than half of the city’s GHG emissions come from the consumption of grid electricity and fuels in buildings, mostly natural gas. Multilevel and intersectoral articulation of public policies are key to advance the climate agenda at the city level, particularly in light of limited urban authority over the electricity sector. Sustainability transformations in Buenos Aires could also be enabled by strengthening the existing capacity development efforts of particular local actors to raise climate awareness; connecting and amplifying emerging community-led initiatives that showcase transformative climate action; and clarifying financial flows as a way to stimulate climate financing.

In the article the change of tourist preferences of potential tourists has been grounded, the tendencies of appearance of industrial tourism trends and tourists incentives as to industrial tourism activities have been analysed. The best practices of Ukraine and Dnipropetrovsk region at industrial tourism management have been analyzed in details. The city of Kryvyi Rih has been defined as center of the greatest potential for industrial tourism development in Ukraine, as there are both mining-industrial and factory facilities. The resource base of industrial tourism potential includes active industry, anthropogenic relief, objects of industrial heritage, human resources, infrastructure. The essence of activities holding in the city for the efficient formation of industrial tourism have been depicted, the substance of the main activities to be implemented under the Program of industrial tourism development in Kryvyi Rih during 2013-2015 has been outlined. The lines of activities of the Industrial Tourism Department of the Kryvyi Rih City Development Institution have been analyzed. The most popular objects and directions of industrial tourism in the city Kryvyi Rih have been considered in detail. The plans for the future and the next steps in the implementation of industrial tourism have been defined.

This paper analyzes preferences for certain school attributes among in-service teachers. We explore a centralized matching process in the city of Sao Paulo that teachers must use when transferring schools. Because teachers have to list and rank their preferences for schools, we can estimate the desirability of school attributes using a rank-ordered logit model. We show that the schools distance from the teachers home, school average test scores, and teacher composition play a central role in teacher preferences. Furthermore, we show that preferences vary according to teacher characteristics, such as gender, race, age, and academic subject.

As all aspects of the American workplace become automated or digitally enhanced to some degree, K12 educators have an increasing responsibility to help their students acquire the technical skills necessary to organize and interpret information. Increasingly, this is done through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially in careers related to transportation and logistics. The Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) at CSU Long Beach has developed this K12 Special Investigation Project to introduce ArcGIS StoryMaps, an engaging, accessible and sophisticated web-based GIS application. The lessons center on e-commerce and its accompanying environmental and economic impact. Still, the activities can be easily adapted to projects in any subject area, such as humanities, science, math, or language arts. This teacher blueprint includes a teacher training guide with ten detailed lesson plans and activities. With the guidance of a National Board-Certified Teacher in Early Adolescence Math as lead instructor, the curriculum is designed to align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Also, exploration of STEM and GIS-related careers are incorporated into the lesson plans.

The Displacement, Placemaking and Wellbeing in the City (DWELL) project explored this question through interviews with people working for non-governmental and community organisations in southeast England. It found that the current asylum system negatively impacts wellbeing and placemaking for asylum seekers, and that access to urban spaces is key to building community connections. Non-governmental organisations and faith groups play an important role in sustaining a sense of wellbeing and place for refugees and asylum seekers.

The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.
