Directions for creation of a steady eco-city (or an eco-district) and the criteria of stability and environmental friendliness of the cities are presented. The authors also recognize that the sustainable eco-friendly development of the city demands association of the matters of the so called “green” agenda and the “brown” agenda. On the other hand, there are places where the sharp social inequality and the interfaced social problems are presented. The authors prove that, although the economic activity of cities leads to serious environmental problems, cities have the greatest potential for developing ways of sustainable environmental development.

The application of the 'smart city' concept represents one of the practical (innovative) solutions for overcoming the problem of sudden urbanization and the associated negative environmental and security consequences. By analyzing the global trend of mass application of modern information and communication systems and their role in the process of integrated management of urban areas, certain advantages of achieving the goals of sustainable development can be seen. Accordingly, the paper presents a dynamic research model of the application of the 'smart city' concept through six key dimensions (smart environment, smart economy, smart people, smart life, smart management and smart mobility) that have a high degree of concordance with the goals of sustainable development presented by of the United Nations Development Programme. The projected goal of this research is a systematic description of the global phenomenon of 'smart city' with a special focus on the ecological and security aspects of the application of certain innovative solutions to urban problems. On the basis of the research results obtained by applying the content analysis technique of a series of relevant scientific works, it can be concluded that the analysis and evaluation of the implementation of the 'smart city' concept requires a comprehensive social approach and the adoption of adequate normative measures, bearing in mind the specific inconsistencies between technological progress and increased vulnerability of urban population.

Concern for the environment that has worldwide affects various aspects of life, including in terms of urban planning. The application of the concept of an ecological city in sustainable urban planning pays close attention to the local aspects of the community and also the dynamic functions of the city based on current adaptations and developments. With the application of an ecological city, there is a balance between urban development and development and environmental tranquility. A city that applies an ecological concept will be able to create a city with a safe, clean, and comfortable situation for its people by maximizing all the potential of the community through empowerment, facilities, and in sync with urban planning. To be able to implement it, good cooperation between communities is needed to build a city with a balanced environmental, economic, and socio-cultural life for a better future life.

Morphological content is a fundamental concept denoting the formal and essential aspects of objects in the realm of morphology. Such a concept encourages a multifaceted analysis and understanding of the form and structure capable of embracing elements in the surrounding world. In the context of urban planning, morphological content serves as a crucial tool for analyzing and interpreting the formal expression of a city and its structural elements. It encompasses the collection of things, connections, attributes, properties, and processes that define the substantive aspects of urban structure and are within the purview of morphology. To specify the nature and domain of knowledge enrichment, ontological foundations of morphological content related to understanding its essence and association with morphology as a form of scientific knowledge are considered. It is established that to study morphological content, it is necessary to depart from the essential characteristics of the formal properties of the object and rely on scientifically grounded theoretical and methodological principles of morphology established in other fields of knowledge, such as biology and philology. To investigate morphological content in urban planning, a methodological concept is formulated in the form of three axioms. The first axiom indicates that a city should be regarded as a static system with a structural feature that captures unchanging formal characteristics at a particular moment in time, based on the formal properties of systemic integrity. The second axiom states that the carrier of morphological content in a city is the material structure expressed by a multitude of elements interacting in a specific order, revealing systemic properties complemented by essential formal features. The material structure of a city is formed by a set of elements and components within the framework of urban planning, contingent upon various factors at the levels of their external and internal manifestations. The third axiom concerning the morphological nature of the material structure of a city, which represents the ability to possess a set of formal characteristics characterizing limitations, organization, adaptability, development, complexity, and maturity, reflects the substantive boundaries of morphological knowledge within the scope of morphology.

Areas of historic buildings as a particularly valuable and fragile part of the city deserve careful treatment and careful attention. When they implement a set of measures to improve the quality of the living environment, they need to improve the functional and planning organization of the territory and buildings, creating more comfortable microclimatic, sanitary and aesthetic conditions. Balancing public open spaces and dense buildings, taking into account the needs of residents in service facilities, regulating traffic to minimize congestion and harmful effects, encouraging pedestrian traffic, developing clean public transport, increasing energy efficiency and reducing pollution will contribute to environmental pollution city while preserving the living continuity of its history. Finding a balance between the housing function, which is gradually being supplanted in the historical quarters by the growing public, while preserving the qualities of historically valuable planning structure, buildings and structures, landscape to ensure a full environment is an important task of modern urban planning. The concept of urban development of a historic city is characterized by respect for historical values, structures and layers of different eras, spatial organization and traditional morphology; should include an analysis of archaeological, historical, architectural, technical, sociological, economic values, covering tangible and intangible elements. In recent decades, the concept of a knowledge-based city has been proposed as one of the most important concepts in urban planning. The present study evaluates the ability to localize urban planning indicators in the city of Urmia and determine the desirability of knowledge-based city indicators to provide coherent policies and strategies to achieve sustainable development and a knowledge-based city. Localization is the adaptation of global patterns and methods of development and planning to the internal conditions of the local community. In order to collect data from documents and library studies, experts’ opinions have been used by the Delphi method. Then, indicators related to local urban planning and knowledge-based city were extracted. The present study’s statistical population is 20 specialists and experts related to the research topic through the survey method. In order to analyze the research data, a one-sample t-test was used to assess the ability to localize aspects of urban planning in the city of Urmia. In order to investigate the degree of correlation and factor load of each urban planning indicator, confirmatory factor analysis was used. Using the Swara technique, the desirability and knowledge-based city indicators’ priority level has been evaluated and analyzed. The research results indicate that each of the economic, social, physical, environmental, and managerial aspects of urban planning can be localized in the city of Urmia. Moreover, the situation of Urmia in some aspects is in a situation of incompatibility in terms of the feasibility of the knowledge-based city’s policies. In order to improve the current situation and achieve the desired goals, suggestions have been made in various aspects.

Abstract. The article shows that the computer-aided, analogous-visual, stereometric interpretation of large-scale colour-infrared (CIR) aerial photographs and subsequent data processing in a Geographical Information System (GIS) can provide fundamental data necessary to describe aspects of urban ecology in a scale relevant for city-planning. This is exemplified by an evaluation of urban areas concerning their climates and airpollution using maps of urban surfaces (scale1:2500). An argumentation relying on such detailed and current basic data can stress the importance of environmental aspects in contrast to competing public and private interests in the process of city planning.

Purpose Security is one of the most important challenges for contemporary integrated urban developments. In Hungary, every strategic document highlights this goal, seeking social and smart city solutions to the problem. Yet, what about crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)? The purpose of the paper is to introduce a Central-European perspective into the international discussion of the topic. Design/methodology/approach Focusing on European Union-funded renewal of public space in the historic city centre of Budapest, the research investigates how urban security can be facilitated through urban planning and design. The analysis of two projects based on design documents and interviews with actors highlights the importance of CPTED, although it is not recognised officially either in the development or in the management phase. Findings March 15th Square is an attractive contemporary public space in the tourist-historic city centre. The project was centrally planned, executed with typical EU indicators, but without any special requirements for security. The process resulted in a safescape. By contrast, the main principal for the renewal of Teleki László Square, the first Hungarian example of community-based planning, was to instil a feeling of security. The public square became a fenced defensible space. Practical implications The analysis method can be used for other projects evaluating changes in urban security due to public space renewal: history, requirements for security, design solutions for space division, materials and urban furniture, as well as use of space and management after the regeneration. Originality/value The paper uncovers Hungarian cases where environmental crime prevention criteria are not explicitly but implicitly present in contemporary urban planning and design. In relation to urban security, it highlights the gap that exists among disciplines, indicative of a lack of dialogue among policymakers, researchers, designers and management.

Through drawings, murals, photographs, videos, and dialogues, children shared their perspectives on resilience in two disparate cities—Boulder, Colorado, USA, and Mexico City, Mexico. Elements that support and negate resilience were consistent between cities. However, the negative aspects of physical and social safety were more acutely felt in Mexico City. While children were clear about what composes a resilient city, integration of these ideas into resilience planning was more challenging, especially in Mexico City.

We also employed principal component analysis to confirm the weighting of each index, evaluated the economic situation of Wafangdian using the sum of the weightings, analyzed the economic development status of the city from 2011 to 2015, and identified the advantages and disadvantages to the cycle of economic development in Wafangdian. Finally, we provided several suggestions on the circular economy in the construction of the Wafangdian eco-city from large, medium, and small hierarchies. Practices have shown that research on the planning framework of the circular economy eco-city has a positive effect on the sustainable development of humans and nature.

Smart cities are increasingly incorporating various technologies and data sources as a key aspect of their sustainability initiatives. Environmental impact assessment is currently the major method to ensure the sustainability of new developments. In particular, environmental noise has been shown to have negative impacts on both human health and wildlife. Therefore, noise monitoring and reduction are the important aspects of smart city planning. This paper discusses the various ways in which smart cities can integrate noise monitoring and assessment into their sustainability initiatives, including the use of sensors, data analytics, and citizen engagement. By leveraging these tools, smart cities can create a more comprehensive understanding of noise pollution levels and patterns, allowing them to make informed decisions and improve the overall quality of life for their residents. Additionally, by engaging and easing the industry in the process of monitoring and assessment, smart cities can help create healthier, more livable, and more sustainable communities for all. A case study of Web-based Traffic Noise Assessment Tool (Web-NAT) commissioned by Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of HKSAR providing a cloud-based platform that streamlines the noise modeling and impact assessment is also investigated.

Environmental health is referring to the health of people in relation to environmental quality. Due to rapid urbanisation, more people are living in urban neighbourhoods. Urban planning and design aspects including the neighbourhood environment are potentially affecting the human healthy lifestyle and health condition. Thus, the relationship between Malaysian neighbourhood environmental aspects and human health has become the concern of this research. One of the neighbourhood units in Shah Alam city had been chosen as the study area for this purpose. Questionnaire survey had been carried out to examine the health condition and physical activeness of residents. Besides, the perception of residents on the quality of neighbourhood environmental aspects also had been collected in the questionnaire survey. The health condition of residents was measured by non-communicable diseases (NCD) and the physical activeness was measured in duration as well as the frequency of physical exercise activities. The study found that the quality of neighbourhood environmental aspects significantly increased the physical activeness of respondents. The physical activeness was positively associated with human health as measured in NCD (heart diseases and high blood pressure, HBP). It shows that neighbourhood environmental (physical and social) aspects are potentially affecting the healthy life of people living in the neighbourhood. Keywords: Healthy life, Neighbourhood environment, Non-communicable diseases (NCD), Physical activeness, Quality.

Abstract Spatial planning very important and dynamic in meeting the needs of space that continues to increase in line with the rate of population growth. Urban infrastructure becomes very important and crucial in directing the development of the city. For Semarang City, infrastructure needs to be addressed immediately, especially in spatial planning. Is carried out thoroughly and taking into account the existing problems and potential. Rationalistic qualitative methods become the methodology in this study. The analysis tools used were, among others, the Administrative approach and the development approach with an environmental and sustainable perspective. An administrative approach was also used by reviewing applicable laws and links with coastal areas, such as law number 26 of 2007 concerning spatial planning; law number 27 of 2007 concerning Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands. While the development approach is environmentally friendly and sustainable, it is an attempt to approach it by looking at the real conditions of the potential and problems of coastal areas, based on aspects of environmental and sustainable values. Therefore, the government should in every set development policies pay attention to the preservation of natural resources and the environment.

This study analyses the framework model cooperation of the sister city that the Banjarmasin city government will carry out in wetland environmental governance (wetland governance). The model of sister city cooperation design that will be carried out is through the bottom-up model cooperation. This cooperation model focuses on the active participation of the community (citizen diplomacy) and community collaboration as transnational actors in managing the wetland environment (wetland governance) in Banjarmasin. Community participation (citizen diplomacy) and the active collaboration of the community with the city government as a transnational actor has become a fascinating new study in government and international relations, so it is crucial to study further. The wetland environmental management model in this model is integrated wetland environmental management. So far, the integrated wetland environmental management planning methodology has paid little attention to aspects that integrate institutions, technology, and funding. This model also describes ideally that wetland environmental management accommodates various interests of development activities, such as agricultural development, industrial interests, and environmental carrying capacity (ecological demands). The operationalisation of the integrated wetland environment concept as a planning unit in development has been limited to rehabilitating and conserving soil and water. At the same time, the organisation is still ad hoc, and the intact institutions regarding the management of the wetland environment have not been patterned. For wetland environmental management to be carried out optimally, it must involve all stakeholders and plan in an integrated, comprehensive, sustainable, and environmentally friendly manner with wetlands as a management unit. The bottom-up sister, the city cooperation model, was then made based on these problems. This collaboration is an effort to involve all parties, especially the community, so that every decision taken in planning is a collective decision and encourages mutual involvement and commitment to implement it.

Cities were first formed, they have been developed and advanced together with the development of humanity and technology. The cities in urbanization process have been going through technological, economical, social and cultural changes. These changes have brought along lots of problems affecting the environment humans live in. The environmental pollution caused by increasing population and degeneration of the environmental resources, and the problems caused by local economic and social disorganization have become the basic concerns of this area. The rapid population growth affects also the cities in social, cultural and economic manners. Especially with the increasing number of multi-story structure demolished in acts of urban centers, because of new and larger settlements housing, water, general health conditions, transportation, environmental degeneration, decrease in green fields etc. like these problems have been arose. The physical structure of a city is comprised of its habitants' social, cultural, economic aspects and their interaction with each other. In this study, in Kyrenia White Zone and Environmental Protection Area encountered in the development process like economic, ecological, environmental problems, and the green field areas that being destroyed day by day are analyzing for the city effects. While evaluating this analysis, LEED ND neighborhood scale, which is created for the advancement in urban sustainability and which is one of the environmental-performance certificate and evaluation systems have been preferred. In this study, the green fields, environmental problems, economic and ecological developments of the region were also taken into account. This study of the spatial patterns of standardized mortality rates (SMRs) in Seoul Mega City Region (SMCR) explores whether neighborhood characteristics affect mortality rates and identifies important determinants of spatial disparity in mortality rates in SMCR. Spatial patterns of mortality rates show a strong positive spatial autocorrelation, suggesting that mortality rates are spatially clustered. A spatial lag model and a GWR model were used to reflect the spatial aspect of mortality rates. The spatial lag model showed better model fitness by considering spatial dependence of mortality rates. It indicates that a higher level of residential deprivation, a less walkable environment, less economic affluence and less social participation are all associated with higher mortality rates with statistical significance. This study suggests that health and welfare policy could incorporate urban planning to consider the neighborhood factors which determine mortality rates in order to improve the health of neighborhood residents.

Decision-making in urban planning should be based on accurate information on the performance of the spaces produced related to socioeconomic and environmental aspects. However, despite the current pattern observed in the peri-urban areas of most Brazilian cities, the planning system implemented does not establish models for investigating conflicts arising from the production of urban space. To expand the forms of assessment and control of environmental impacts, a theoretical-methodological framework is presented for assessing the performance of the space produced in urban areas of environmental preservation. The indicators of that framework are important measures to identify internal discrepancies to the system, showing its heterogeneity. The present study aimed to assess the performance of the Master Plan for Urban Development of the city of Pelotas, RS, Brazil in the production of space in areas of Environmental Preservation. The investigation considered socio-spatial, socioenvironmental and socio-economic aspects. The proposed analysis uses multivariate statistical analysis to classify the space produced. Cities are dominated by two closely related aspects, namely the physical and human aspects. The physical aspect exists naturally in the form of space and its elements, while the human aspect is the subject of development as well as the user of its benefits. The city is part of human settlement, in its development, there is disintegrated planning because its development approach only sees the city as a physical object rather than a cultural object. The modern lifestyle requires the environmental atmosphere to be natural environmental atmosphere, which is valuable. The study was conducted to calculate the contribution of the environmental services aspects of Green Open Space (RTH) as a scientific basis in the policy strategy for managing Urban Parks (TK) and Urban Forest Parks (THK). Based on the results of this study, urban residents need UP and UFP as places for their recreational needs. The policy strategy is to create an appropriate GOS for recreational places. The engineering aspect of recreation sites in UP and UFP aims to optimize the recreational carrying capacity. The policy to overcome the problem improves ecological management through the enrichment and rejuvenation of old plants. Sustainability is now fully integrated into the entire life cycle of the Olympic Games. The planning, preparation, and staging of the Winter Olympics have opportunities to create a sustainable legacy for the host cities for decades. The tangible and/or intangible impacts of the Winter Olympics on the host city are multidimensional, including economic, social, and environmental aspects. However, there are still few studies on the multidimensional impact of the Winter Olympics on the sustainable development of the host city. This paper aims to investigate the effects of the 2022 Winter Olympics on host city sustainability from public perspective. Using a survey of 806 host residents in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the authors performed descriptive statistics and regression analysis to analyze the effects of the Winter Olympic Games on the city’s sustainable development. The Winter Olympic Games are divided into three stages, including the pre-game phase, in-game phase, and post-game phase, and the impacts cover three dimensions, including economic, social, and environmental aspects. The results show that the 2022 Winter Olympics integrate sustainability into the whole process of the Winter Olympics; the Winter Olympics have an important catalytic effect on the host city’s sustainable development.

However, urban areas face challenges such as environmental destruction, social deprivation, insecurity, health problem, and accessibility issue. These problems affect liveability level of the urban settlements. Liveability is influenced by the aspects of physical environment and social. A study had been carried out in Kuala Lumpur city with the Mandy Villa at Segambut as the study area. The purpose of the study is to investigate the liveability level of the study area and the relationship with the urban planning aspects of physical, and social. A questionnaire survey had been carried out. The respondents with different socio-economic background were mostly felt that the study area was liveable. From the relationship analysis by using correlation tests, the study found that some of the physical planning aspects and most of the social aspects were positively and significantly correlated to the liveability level. With the research findings, town planners, developers and government agencies are able to have a better understanding of the physical and social determinants of liveability. However, more future studies should be carried out for different cities and towns to further improve the understanding on the topic of urban liveability.
