Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2004
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The focus of this study is on the unique and unparalleled features that the Korean Presbyterian Church (KPC) representing the broad Korean Church has displayed during last 120 years' mission history: a strong revivalism in the formative phase; a remarkable Church growth in the growing phase; a rapid moral secularisation in the declining phase. Specifically this study aims to account for the problematic phenomenon manifested during last three decades and further to suggest a substantial alternative for the . problem at this stage. To achieve this aim, this study employed a practical hermeneutical methodology and was approached in terms of ecclesial spirituality. Chapter II, paying special attention to the marginality of the Korean nation destined to be a victim of world powers in modem history, provides a short history of the KPC from a marginal perspective to discern the particular geopolitical, socio-politicoeconomic, and cultural situations that presumed to have had a crucial impact on shaping the spirituality of the KPc. Chapter III proposes, as a base theory, a definition towards the phenomenon of ecclesial spirituality: EccLesial spirituality is eccLesial apprehension and response to the meaning and power of God ~ presence and redemptive activity in the powerdominated world. According to the proposed definition ecclesial spirituality takes shape through the hermeneutical process of the faith community in the dynamic interplay between divine, human and contextual powers operating in socio-historical situations. Chapter IV analyses and explains, on the basis of the proposed definition, what and how contextual realities historically operated in shaping the spirituality of the KPC and further evaluates the features of the KPC's spirituality manifested in each historical phase. The result shows that the marginal situation of the nation operates as a crucial factor in the formation of the KPC's spirituality in each particular socio-historical context in either a positive or negative way. Chapter V, as the normative and strategic phase of our research methodology, concludes by examining the theological identity of the Church in relation with the power-dominated world and by investigating the hermeneutical locus of ecclesial praxis, whereby marginality is suggested as the praxial hermeneutical locus of authentic ecclesial identity and spirituality in the world. And further, identifying the Church as a marginal community in the world, this study finally proposes a spirituality of marginality as an incomplete suggestion of the direction towards which the spirituality of the KPC should steer. This study contributes towards the development of an ecclesial hermeneutic for the benefit of ecclesial transformation in the world. Specifically, its contribution is to realise the distinctive identity and position of the KPC as ecclesia crucis in the contemporary situation. It can also motivate the significance of studies in ecclesial spirituality, not only for the KPC, but also for both Western churches and the South African white Church in their identity crisis in the contemporary dominant culture and drastically changed socio-political context.

Annotation:
The relationship between Texas Baptists and slavery is studied with an emphasis on the official statements made about the institution in denominational sources combined with a statistical analysis of the extent of slaveholding among Baptists. A data list of over 5,000 names was pared to 1100 names of Baptists in Texas prior to 1865 and then cross-referenced on slaveownership through the use of federal censuses and county tax rolls. Although Texas Baptists participated economically in the slave system, they always maintained that blacks were children of God worthy of religious instruction and salvation. The result of these disparate views was a paradox between treating slaves as chattels while welcoming them into mixed congregations and allowing them some measure of activity within those bodies. Attitudes expressed by white Baptists during the antebellum period were continued into the post-war years as well. Meanwhile, African-American Baptists gradually withdrew from white dominated congregations, forming their own local, regional, and state organizations. In the end, whites had no choice but to accept the new-found status of the Freedmen, cooperating with black institutions on occasion. Major sources for this study include church, associational, and state Baptist minutes; county and denominational histories; and government documents. The four appendices list associations, churches, and counties with extant records. Finally, private accounts of former slaves provide valuable insight into the interaction between white and black Baptists.

This dissertation focuses on the African American Baptist church as a vital architect of black higher education in Kentucky. In keeping with the historiography of black education, my research focuses on the often-forgotten component of religion and its impact on the development of post-secondary education. More specifically, my work explores the dynamics of race, class and gender in shaping the origins of black higher learning institutions in the state. I contend that Kentucky was home to a growing and progressive African American middle class who sought racial uplift to solve the “negro problem" through education. I also reveal that African American religious leaders in Kentucky served as examples for other African Americans who were promoting black higher education during the period of segregation. As a border state, Kentucky offers a unique opportunity to examine the educational challenges and opportunities African Americans faced during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kentucky was home to one of the few African American Baptist controlled institutions in the nation, Simmons College. Therefore, this study offers historians an expanded lens for analyzing African American agency in developing higher learning initiatives while combating racial inequality in a state with a reputation for poorly funding public education.

Thompson, Damian. „The problem of the end : a sociological study of the management of apocalyptic faith at Kensington Temple, a London Pentecostal church, at the turn of the millennium“. Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2003. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2667/.

Annotation:
This thesis is a sociological study of the management of apocalyptic belief in Kensington Temple, a Pentecostal church in London, in the years 1997-2000. Apocalyptic or millenarian beliefs, in which the supernatural end of the world lies just around the corner, have often been explained in terms of material deprivation or psychological disturbance. This study shows how members of a church with an apocalyptic tradition reconciled the doctrine of the Second Coming with their daily lives. It rejects the idea that there is a simple cause of apocalyptic beliefs, focussing instead on millenarianism as a form of rhetoric whose prophecies are constantly overtaken by events - a phenomenon referred to as "the Problem of the End". Throughout history, members of apocalyptic religions have modified millenarian theology until its social costs are outweighed by its benefits. In practice, this has often meant the replacement of risky, time-specific predictions of Doomsday (predictive millenarianism) by apocalyptic narratives whose function is to account for features of the contemporary world (explanatory millenarianism). The data from Kensington Temple, which includes the results of a survey of 2,973 worshippers, points in this direction. It shows that worshippers assigned a low priority to the concept of the "End Times", subjecting it to the same rational scrutiny that they applied to other spiritual claims. Almost none of them expected the year 2000 to bring the Second Coming of Christ, though it did serve as a deadline for an unsuccessful plan to create a network of 2,000 church groups that carried eschatological overtones. The thesis concludes that the fragmentation of religious meaning in modern society undermines the plausibility of apocalyptic prophecies, at least in the industrialised West; literal belief in millenarian doctrines is a casualty of secularisation.

Annotation:
In 1918, Archbishop Shaw invited the Texas Catholic religious order, Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, to New Orleans to manage the St. Louis Cathedral and its filial parish for Southern Italians, St. Mary’s Church. This thesis will look at the personalities and preferentialism that affected this early 20th century transfer of religious power from secular priests to a religious order. Comparing the language used by Archbishop Shaw in correspondence with Oblate Fathers with the language he used with his secular priests will determine that Shaw displayed favoritism in his decision to invite the Oblates. This decision was affected by four primary factors: Shaw’s prior relationship with the Oblates as Bishop of San Antonio, his concerns with archdiocesan finances, his perceived threat of encroaching Protestantism, and politics of discontent amongst his secular clergy. Shaw’s distinct idealistic pragmatism shows the dynamic nature of the institution of the Catholic Church in Louisiana.

Annotation:
There are probably many people who imagine that religiously motivated ethics are static and immobile. That is probably an especially common thought when Catholic ethics are mentioned. Most people imagine that Catholic ethics is formed from above, by the Pope and the college of bishops, and that Church members have to comply with it without a shred of influence. Is this true? This paper (in swedish) examines the relationship between religious motivated ideals and pastoral problems, aiming to find out how theory and practice interact in the formation of Catholic ethics. The theoretical starting point for this paper is four models presented by Niclas Lindström that describe four ways that theory and practice interact. The material being investigated is the Catholic Church's recent post-synodal exhortation Amoris Laetitia, in english "The joy of love". By examining the ideals, problems and proposed actions mentioned in the exhortation, and by comparing the study to previous research regarding doctrinal development within the Catholic Church, a conclusion is made: Catholic ethics is developed and clarified slowly. The bishops are finalizing teachings based on theological ideals, in matters that their members have put on the agenda based on their pastoral problems. Finally, suggestions are presented regarding how school teachers that teach religious studies can make use of the paper in his or her work, in a way that meets the Swedish National Agency goals.

We often interact with machines that react in real time to our actions (robots, websites etc). They are modelled as reactive systems, that continuously interact with their environment. The goal of reactive synthesis is to automatically generate a system from the specification of its behaviour so as to replace the error-prone low-level development phase by a high-level specification design. In the classical setting, the set of signals available to the machine is assumed to be finite. However, this assumption is not realistic to model systems which process data from a possibly infinite set (e.g. a client id, a sensor value, etc.). The goal of this thesis is to extend reactive synthesis to the case of data words. We study a model that is well-suited for this more general setting, and examine the feasibility of its synthesis problem(s). We also explore the case of non-reactive systems, where the machine does not have to react immediately to its inputs

Wansbrough, Ann. „Speaking together: a methodology for the National Council of Churches' contribution to public policy debate in Australia“. Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2000. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27798.

Annotation:
Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Sydney University. Ann Wansbrough March 1999 The National Council of Churches in Australia has undertaken, in its constitution, to speak out on matters affecting oppressed people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and more generally on issues related to justice, peace and integrity of creation. This thesis offers a possible methodology for investigating the issues, as the basis for speaking with one another as churches, with the poor and oppressed, and with the policy-makers. The focus is on issues related to economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights in the international human rights instruments. Part 1 examines the criteria that a methodology must meet if it is to be consistent with the NCCA constitution. The rest of Part I is devoted to the policy context. Chapter 2 looks at some of the issues being examined by church agencies. Two case studies in the Appendix look in more detail at two specific questions. Chapter 3 examines the public policy process. Chapter 4 looks at the international human rights instruments that Australia has ratified, and what mechanisms in Australia are used to implement those rights. Part II has separate chapters on the traditions of the Orthodox, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Uniting Churches, as well as the international and Australian ecumenical tradition. These chapters attempt to deal faithfully with the different approaches of the different traditions, while asking a common set of questions of each. What does this tradition see as the role of the church in the public arena? What is the attitude of the church towards human rights? Does the church adopt a critical attitude towards its own life as well as the life of the world (does it have a sense of selfsuspicion)? What does the church say about its methodology for thinking about what it should say and do? What methodology is implicit in actual documents about public policy issues? Case studies in an appendix supplement these chapters by examining over 30 examples of church documents dealing with public policy issues. A number of common themes emerge which provide the basis for the methodology proposed in Part III. Part III begins with the ethics of public policy debate. What is required to debate policy issues in an ethical manner in a pluralist society? The final three chapters (11-13) are devoted to the methodological proposal. Chapter 11 proposes a hermeneutic circle that is an elaboration of that proposed by Juan Segundo. His circle was for liberating theology; the elaboration in the thesis is for policy work in the light of theology. Chapter 1 1 also looks at the appropriateness of using such a circle for ecumenical work. The methodology is not dependent on the validity of Liberation Theology, since it is based on the analysis of church traditions in Part 11. Discussion of the methodology begins with a recognition that there are many competing realities in pluralist Australia. The methodology gives priority to the reality experienced by those whose human rights are violated or at risk in public policy: Indigenous people, the poor, and so on. The role of the church is to provide and promote an alternative discourse. The rest of the chapter looks at the methodology required to provide that alternative: ideological suspicion and critique. It includes an examination of the nature of ideology. Three elements of ideological critique are discussed: human rights analysis, structural analysis (the analysis of power relations in the policy process) and policy analysis (the validity of policy proposals). Some suggestions are made about the types of questions required to move from abstract methodology to concrete method. An appendix provides more detailed examples. Chapter 12 looks at theological suspicion and analysis. There are three tasks. First, to recognise and critique the way theological concepts have been appropriated into the dominant discourse to give it legitimacy. The second task is to recognise that ideological ideas sometimes become incorporated into theology in a way that undermines its integrity. So there must be critique of theology itself. The churches need a sense of self-suspicion, as some of their documents acknowledge. The third task is to renew the theological tradition in the light of questions of justice. In this task there is substantial help available from those biblical scholars who use a “double hermeneutic”, that is, who in their scholarly study of Scripture bring reality and tradition into dialogue, to discover elements of the tradition that have been neglected or not fully understood in the past. Chapter 13 looks at the outcome of the process. It suggests that the contextualised process of chapters 11 and 12 needs to lead to middle axioms (i.e. general directions, policy principles, criteria). The thesis thus draws together the two major strands of ecumenical method historically: middle axioms and contextualisation. Middle axioms provide the criteria for evaluating public policy and for suggesting alternatives. The point of the whole process is action. In this way the hermeneutic circle becomes praxis. The methodology is a circular process, so that the various parts interact and understanding is deepened over time. A brief fourth appendix discusses some questions arising from the thesis itself, such as “Is it possible to talk about method?”

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa today is facing many social and welfare problems. Three of which are very prominent: named HIV/Aids; unemployment; and sexual and/or violent crimes against woman and children. With churches being some of the biggest and most influential nongovernmental organizations in the country, government is increasingly acknowledging that churches have a very important role to play in order to help curb social and welfare problems in the community. One inhibiting factor keeps churches from playing the role that government is expecting of them: the roles and expected roles of churches have not been quantified sufficiently. A geographical information system was chosen to help in this process of quantification. Previous studies related to GIS being used by social and welfare services showed that this software give these service agencies a powerful new way to analyse services in relation to clients and the communities in which they operate. The crux throughout the study is the process by which it is shown how a GIS can be used and is central from the process of data gathering, storing and manipulation of the gathered data, deriving information from it, through to communicating and visualising the obtained results.
