Abstract In 1992, Jet published “James Cleveland Infected L.A. Youth with HIV, $9 Mil. Lawsuit Claims,” which detailed how the Chicago-born gospel musician had not only allegedly sexually abused his foster son, Christopher B. Harris, but had also “[given] him the AIDS virus.” This article takes this incident of rumor or accusation as a critical opportunity to think about the archival reality of Black queer sexuality, on one hand, and sexual violence in Black gospel music history on the other. Using the legal documents from Christopher B. Harris v. Irwin Goldring as Special Administrator of the Estate of James Cleveland and commentary from Cleveland's contemporaries, it exhumes Cleveland from dusty church closets for consideration in the history of HIV and AIDS in African American Protestant church and gospel communities and in Black queer studies, ethnomusicology, and gender and sexuality studies. Further, it theorizes “Black church rumor” as a lens for Black queer religious studies and argues that Cleveland's perceived queer sexuality distracted from Harris's allegations of sexual abuse. Thus, it situates Cleveland—the person, the preacher, and the gospel legend—in the literature on “down low” sexuality and explicates the implications of Cleveland's legacy and role in Black gospel music production.

Abstract The volume “Geistliche Leitbilder und Weggefährten – Betrachtungen” written by the former bishop D. Dr. Christoph Klein, released in March 2015 (Schiller Verlag Bonn – Hermannstadt) and inspired by the fact, that the former vice bishop Dr. Hans Klein is turning 75 in November this year (2015), led the author to write this article. It is about two church leading personalities: Christoph Klein (commissioned as Bishop of the Evangelical Church A. C. in Romania between 1990 – 2010) and Hans Klein (commissioned as Vice Bishop of the same church between 1994 – 2007), whose commitment for the relationship between the Evangelical Church A. C. and the other churches inside and outside the country is nothing but to be admired. Deeply ecumenically committed, these two personalities have become spiritual models not only for the author of this article but also for many others.

ABSTRACTMatthew Tindal's Rights of the Christian church (1706), which elicited more than thirty contemporary replies, was a major interjection in the ongoing debates about the relationship between church and state in late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century England. Historians have usually seen Tindal's work as an exemplar of the ‘republican civil religion’ that had its roots in Hobbes and Harrington, and putatively formed the essence of radical whig thought in the wake of the Glorious Revolution. But this is to misunderstand theRights. To comprehend what Tindal perceived himself as doing we need to move away from the history of putatively ‘political’ issues to the histories of ecclesiastical jurisprudence, patristic scholarship, and biblical exegesis. The contemporary significance of Tindal's work was twofold: methodologically, it challenged Anglican patristic scholarship as a means of reaching consensus on modern ecclesiological issues; positively, it offered a powerful argument for ecclesiastical supremacy lying in crown-in-parliament, drawing on a legal tradition stretching back to Christopher St Germain (1460–1540) and on Tindal's own legal background. Tindal's text provides a case study for the tentative proposition that ‘republicanism’, whether as a programme or a ‘language’, had far less impact on English anticlericalism and contemporary debates over the church–state relationship than the current historiography suggests.

St. Barbara Church in Otovice, the one investigated in this thesis, was built by Christoph and Kilian Dientzenhofer. Nowadays, concerns about its stability and degradation process led to the necessity to investigate more deeply its current condition. Therefore, the main objective of the article consists in the FEM modeling and the evaluation of the bearing capacity of enclosure walls, with particular attention on the influence of the soil deterioration. In conclusion, technical advices are recommended.

Abstract John Jewel, regarded as the principal apologist and theologian for the Elizabethan Church, was also esteemed as one of England’s most important (if not the most important) authority on the subject of usury, and therefore was cited frequently by opponents of usury towards the end of the sixteenth century and throughout the seventeenth century. One of the most sustained interpretations of Jewel as a theologian on the subject of usury was by Christoph Jelinger, who observed that the late bishop of Sarum employed the same theological method in opposing usury as he did in defending the doctrines and practices of the Church of England against its Catholic opponents, that is, by appealing to the Scriptures, the Church Fathers, Church Councils, and the example of the primitive church. This article seeks to confirm the opinion of Jelinger, and in doing so show that Jewel’s opposition to usury stemmed primarily from the conviction that it was both a vice and heresy that eroded the unifying attribute of Christian society which was love.

Was it proper that laymen, not members of the church, not involved in the decisions taken, should be allowed to sit in Parliament to decide what the law of the church should be? After some discussion, I was persuaded it was proper, and cast my vote accordingly. In that decision, I recognized the triumph of one version of the Royal Supremacy over another. It is the triumph of Christopher St. German over Bishop Stephen Gardiner, of Sir Francis Knollys over Queen Elizabeth I, of Chief Justice Coke over Lord Chancellor Ellesmere, and of John Pym over Archbishop Laud. That triumph took a century to arrive after Henry VIII's Act of Supremacy, and, like many other triumphs, it threw out a promising baby with its mess of popish bath-water.

The Jesuits or ‘The Society of Jesus’ holds a significant place in the wide area of church history. Mark Noll cites John Olin notes that the founding of the Jesuits was ‘the most powerful instrument of Catholic revival and resurgence in this era of religious crisis’.[1] In histories of Europe to the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the Jesuits appear with notable frequency. The Jesuits were the finest expression of the Catholic Reformation shortly after the Protestant reform began. The Society is attributed to its founder, Ignatius of Loyola. As a layman, Ignatius viewed Christendom in his context as a society under siege. It was Christian duty to therefore defend it. The Society was formed at a time that nationalism was growing and papal prestige was falling. As Christopher Hollis observed: ‘Long before the outbreak of the great Reformation there were signs that the unity of the Catholic Christendom was breaking up.’[2] The Jesuits, as a missionary movement at a critical period in the Roman Catholic Church, used creative strategies that later symbolised the strength of what would become the traditional Roman Catholic Church for a long time in history. The strategies involved included, but were not limited to: reviving and nurturing faith among Catholics, winning back those who had become Protestants, converting those who had not been baptised, training of the members for social service and missionary work and also establishing educational institutions.[1] Mark A. Kirby, Mark. „Furnishing Sir Christopher Wren's churches : Anglican identity in late-seventeenth century London“. Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22924/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis examines what the liturgical furnishings of Sir Christopher Wren's churches can tell us about Anglican identity in late seventeenth-century London. It argues that the building of so many churches in a short timescale gave the Church of England a unique opportunity to express its identity in the particular context of its re-establishment after the Restoration. This study begins by looking at those involved in the furnishing process - within the parishes and among master-craftsmen - to establish their respective roles and influences. In particular it looks at how the emergence of a new genre of church furnishings in the classical style came about, and the intellectual culture which informed it. This thesis considers the mandate in the Canons Ecclesiastical that pulpits be "comely and decent" and demonstrates that this was a sophisticated philosophy which influenced how materials were selected and treated, and how wood-carving was applied to items according to the hierarchy of their spiritual status and liturgical purpose. The seventeenth-century Church was pre-occupied with proclaiming its virtues as the best of Churches, in response to popish and dissenting attacks. This thesis argues that the new church furnishings, and especially the reredoses, performed a key role in this polemical discourse. It considers how reredoses and screens were used to assert the Church's claim to spiritual descent from Biblical Israel and the Early Church through references to Solomon's Temple and early Christian worship - with divine worship of the purest times. It then looks at iconography which declared Anglican loyalty to the Stuart dynasty and episcopal governance. The thesis examines the furnishings of five churches which Wren himself designed, and considers what can be learned about his approach to design and whether any conclusions may be drawn about his own churchmanship.

Annotation:
This thesis is a comprehensive reassessment of the role of Saint Christopher wall paintings in English (and Welsh) churches. Although the study focuses primarily on parish churches (where the majority of mural paintings survive), it also considers cathedrals, abbeys and other medieval buildings where such imagery is extant or documented. Welsh churches are also examined where appropriate, though there are only a few surviving Saint Christopher images in this geographical area. The investigation spans the period from the emergence of Saint Christopher representations in illumination (c.1250), to the beginning of the sixteenth century, when wall painting depictions of the saint were at their zenith (c.1500 for sake of convenience). The thesis begins with an examination and assessment of universal image function and reception in medieval church and society. This is a central issue to the study of churches, and it is therefore necessary to dedicate a whole chapter to the subject. Through the examination of individual paintings and documents relating to specific churches, the thesis then goes on to focus on three main themes related to Saint Christopher and his cult. First, it considers the role of Saint Christopher wall paintings (and other types of images where appropriate), secondly, the location of Saint Christopher murals within church buildings, and thirdly, the different methods of patronage associated with the wall paintings. The survey also establishes a long-overdue and revised chronology of the entire corpus of Saint Christopher wall paintings based on an examination of architectural, documentary and visual evidence, and on comparisons with other types of media from England and the Continent (such as sculpture, illumination and woodcuts). Most murals can be dated to within the nearest quarter or third of a century (and to the nearest century if the date of execution is uncertain).

ABSTRACT“Space” is one part of culture, and there is a strong relationship between the culture and the space. Cultural interaction research is being used to study the effects of bringing Filipino labors into Taiwan. Taiwan''s government has recommended the first one foreign labor who is being used for less desirable jobs. The number of foreign labors is increasing, even surpasses that of the Taiwan originals. And the foreign labors have become a burgeoning group in Taiwan. The new and developing group of immigrants has their own cultural traits such as race and language. Lack of reconciliation of these cultural differences creates a gap with the local community. Immigrant labor has caused some conflicts between members of the local community over the use of public areas. In one research case, The Christopher church area of Chung-Shane north road, data was collected by means of observation and interviews. Results were used to characterize the use of areas surrounding the church, and to understand the local Filipino community. To go a step further, we''d like to confer on the use and the identity of urban space and the relationship between Filipino labors and the local community. The main research matters include three topics.First is to understand how Filipino laborers use the area around Christopher Church.According to the analysis of the Filipinos'' behavior in religious gatherings on Sundays, It shows that there are different situations and meanings when the Filipinos are using the Space near the church. Secondly, we examine some economic activities undertaken by Filipinos in the shopping area near Chung-Shane North Road. Activities such as entertainment, commerce, and social gatherings on Sundays will be discussed.Thirdly, we will try to understand how Filipinos are using public areas, and the cultural effects on the local community. Finally, after discussing the cultural ethnicity of Filipino labors, we will find out the effects of introduction of Filipino immigrants into Taiwan. Our government neglected to consider that the challenges to Taiwanese society posed by Filipino immigrant labor. One voice that has been largely unheard is that of Filipino immigrants. Filipinos can not be blamed for the deterioration of the urban environment. Those who have profited from the government policy have often used the immigrants as a scapegoat for societal problems.

The focus of this practical theological study is Pentecostalism, and the relationship between the hermeneutics of Pentecostalism and Postmodernism. Through a literary search, we observe the points of congruency between the hermeneutics of early Pentecostals and the key tenets of Postmodernism. We note the unprecedented acceptance of Pentecostal scholars into the larger theological world and question whether this is a result of the increased Modernization of Pentecostal hermeneutics. The Postmodern world of youth is explored, and we observe their tremendous openness to spirituality. This thesis will show that Pentecostals may contribute to the Christian world a Pentecostal hermeneutic that will speak a relevant message to generations of youth. Chapters two and three examine the convergent viewpoints of Pentecostalism with Postmodernity, in terms of rationalism, narratives, and the place of experience in life and theology. Chapter four highlights the hermeneutical debate between Gordon D. Fee and his Pentecostal responders, noting the Modern approach in the principles debated. Chapter five seeks to provide interaction with a giant of theology seldom engaged by Pentecostals - Rudolf Bultmann - and his modern followers, and explores the world of Postmodern youth. Chapter six explores the work of Kenneth Archer, who has proposed a specific Pentecostal hermeneutical approach, and chapter seven discusses the role of the Holy Spirit in hermeneutics, including whether Pentecostal experience may be considered an ”edge” in hermeneutics. Chapter eight summarizes the findings of this study.

He was responsible for about fifty new churches in place of the eighty-six destroyed or severely damaged in the fire; the total remains inexact because, where a church only needed repairs, his office merely handled the payments, funded by a tax on all coal coming into London. Moreover, St Clement Danes (a rebuilding) and St Anne’s, Soho, and St James’s, Piccadilly (new parishes), are in Westminster and unconnected

The stone may have been square but it was very shaky. Even before the religious settlement of 1559 was made, the ‘Device for alteration of religion’ accurately forecast that it would be rejected on the one hand by ‘the papist sect’, and on the other by those who, dissatisfied with its moderation, would ‘call the alteration a cloaked papistry or a mingle-mangle’ (Gee, 196–7).

Abstract In 1586, Decrees for Orders in Printing changed the licensing of printed books, placing a church High Commission in charge, using clerical licensers. Why did this not expand to licensing plays for performance? Scandalous attacks on the church hierarchy by ‘Martin Marprelate’ involved the players, despite Tilney’s attempts to restrain them. His powers are still limited: a commission to regulate playing is suggested, involving both the City and the church, as well as Tilney, but nothing comes of it. The City tries to buy Tilney out, but fails. The chapter concludes with reflections on Christopher Marlowe: despite his notoriety there is no evidence that Tilney censored his plays. Only posthumously was Dr Faustus subject to Parliament’s 1606 Act of Abuses, forbidding blasphemous reference to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit on stage.

John Edward Christopher Hill (1912–2003), a Fellow of the British Academy, was a great historian. Nearly all his huge output was on the seventeenth-century ‘English Revolution’ and its origins. It was claimed that his Marxism, even when mellowed, led him to ignore evidence that did not support it. In 1936, Hill became an assistant lecturer at Cardiff University. Two years later, he returned to Balliol College at the University of Oxford as fellow and tutor in history. In 1956, he released his first major book, Economic Problems of the Church: from Archbishop Whitgift to the Long Parliament. Hill also found himself at the centre of communist politics in Britain, when the Historians’ Group led the movement to end the Communist Party’s obedience to Moscow. Besides the disputes with historians, Hill’s devotion to poetry had brought him into conflict with literary critics. Hill is cautious in his assessments of John Milton’s relations with radicalism. Hill’s sympathy for the downtrodden and unsuccessful was an unchanging part of his historical and his practical beliefs.
