This study is aimed at investigating the trend of folk song arrangement in six Choir Competitions Folklore Category, 2019. It is specifically focused on investigating three things: the trend of arrangers’ names, title of, origin of folk songs performed in the competitions, the characteristic of the arrangement and relationship between the arrangers and the national choir competitions committee. The reason of choosing the topic is because such a folk song arrangement is seen to be one of the key factors in conducting a choir competition, folklore category. As for the research method, it is more on music behaviour in a relational teritory. Therefore, it used a document study and qualitative research design. In this case, the researcher observed in six choir competitions and interviewed the arrangers, choir leaders, and musicians taking apart in the competitions. The findings revealed that the most frequently used arrangement was Ken Steven’s “Cikala Le Pong Pong”, the most popular arranger was Budi Susanto Yohanes, and Java and Madura were the two origins from which most of the folk songs were performed in choir competitions. The characteristic of the most popular one due to its unique arrangement in the form of vibrant music rhythm and body percussion. It revealed that an arranger is the first key agent in a systemic social-organization mechanism like in a choir competition.

The purpose of this study was to explore the culture of choral singing among children and youth in Pretoria East, South Africa. The philosophical underpinnings of the choirs, the roles of choirs within local and national communities, and the perceived values and benefits of participation were examined. This collective case study required the integration of standard ethnographic strategies employed over the course of a month-long period of fieldwork and two shorter follow-up visits. I observed approximately 40 hours of rehearsal and 25 hours of performance, focusing on five choirs in and around the University of Pretoria. I also conducted 22 semi-structured interviews with choristers, directors, staff members, and parents. Participants identified a philosophy of “message bearing” as the primary goal of choral performance. Innovation and diversity in programming and competition were additional emergent themes related to this philosophy. Choirs were found to have multiple roles, including recruiting and marketing, promoting diverse South African musical cultures, and cultivating a national, South African identity. Participants described a wide range of musical, social, educational, and personal benefits associated with participation, with choristers most commonly alluding to choir as a means of “relaxing.” Choir emerged as a source of bridging social capital, encouraging cooperation among participants from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds, promoting intercultural understanding and trust, and cultivating a broadened sense of national South African identity.

The Vasari Singers, now well established as a much-acclaimed London-based chamber choir, celebrated their 25th Anniversary this year with a concert at St John's Smith Square on 15 May featuring short specially commissioned works by ten notable British composers. As conductor Jeremy Backhouse described to me, a private preview of the works, all on sacred themes, took place at Tonbridge School Chapel in February, in the presence of the composers, thus setting up a ‘dialogue’ on interpretation. Although strictly speaking of amateur status, the choir has achieved much critical success, winning the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year Competition, appearing on BBC Radio 3 and at major venues, and has shown a distinct interest in commissioning new choral works in recent years.

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to discover the process of social identity development for adolescent high school women’s choir participants. Purposive maximum variation sampling was used to identify three public high school women’s choirs where 54 interviews were conducted with 40 different public school singers. Three waves of data collection and analysis revealed a seven-step process beginning with coming in singing and ending with envisioning myself. The central phenomenon was identified as opening up my voice and me and emphasized singers’ increased self-confidence. Intervening conditions included competition, the absence of choral opportunities, and lack of understanding from those outside of the choral program. Amount of time in the choral program, number of groups, and community recognition were identified as contextual conditions. Dimensionalized properties, a temporal matrix, and propositional statements are presented.

Background. In Ukraine both musicologists and performers (in particular the choirs conducted by well-known choirmasters) do much for the further development of the home Bach studies. For instance, the direction of the ‘choral bahhiana’ was actively developed by the leading choirmasters of that time professor M. Berdennikov (Kiev), Y. Kulik (Kharkiv) in the 60’s and 70’s. It is known that future students of the choral conducting departments first learn the choral heritage of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel, as a rule, at the piano lessons at children musical schools and secondary schools. Unfortunately, their choral works aren’t often sounded today in the concert halls of musical academies and universities of arts. This music seemed to move from the concert stage to the classrooms. Analysis of publications according the topic. Among the researches that highlight the problems of the style of the sacred works of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel, it is necessary to point out the fundamental studies of I. Givental and L. Gingold, M. Druskin, T. Livanova, V. Protopopov, A. Schweitzer, articles of modern authors by K. Berdennikova, N. Inutochkina, Y. Lyashenko, V. Semenuk, G. Skobtsova. However, the questions of the specifics of choral vocal technique remain, as a rule, outside the attention of scholars and they constitute the topic’s relevance of the article. Methods. The usage of the historical method contributed to the research of the educational choral performance at the present stage. It is involved structural-functional and intonational methods for establishing dramatic works’ features and concretization of their spiritual content. The comparative method is used to determine the differences between vocal style of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel’s works and the technique of working with them. Objectives. The main goal is systematization of theoretical and practical observations with the performance of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel’s choral works by the choir of the Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts students. The article is devoted to highlighting the problems of the performing process and the specifics of the choir practice of students with compositions by J. S. Bach (Cantata No. 140, ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’ and Magnificat) G. F. Handel (Dettingen Te Deum in D major, HWV 283). Results. The holding of the 22nd International Music Festival “Kharkiv Assemblies” devoted to the J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel’s oeuvre in 2015 was a significant event not only for Kharkiv but also the whole Ukraine’s musical life. The choir of the Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts students traditionally participated in it as in previous years (art director – Honored Art Worker of Ukraine, professor S. Prokopov, choirmasters – laureate of the all-Ukrainian competition H. Savelyeva, award winner of the all-Ukrainian competition O. Fartushka). The choir performed Magnificat and Cantata No. 140 by J. S. Bach ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’, fragments from the Dettingen Te Deum in D major, HWV 283 by G. F. Handel (the last two works are Kharkiv premieres). The work with them took place in short order and so it caused of some vocal technique difficulties and the problems of performative concept and performative style. Complaxities were intensified by the lack of necessary acoustic accumulation and the practical experience of performing the music of the Baroque by many young choirmasters, members of the choir group. The importance of studying the musical heritage of composers of genius in order to make a conductor-choirmaster personality is emphasized in the article. The main difficulties of learning choral scores due to the lack of performing experience, certain acoustic accumulation of choral music of the late baroque period which students of choral conducting specialization have. The approximation to the true understanding of the performing style of choral music by J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel may be provided with conditions of a thorough in-depth studying their works. The main tasks of the performative choices are described: appreciation of the entire depth of the spiritual content of J. S. Bach’s and G. F. Handel’s music by young performers, the correlation between vocal and instrumental principles, rational and emotional ones. One of the main tasks of the choir practice of students with J. S. Bach’s cantata No. 140 «Watchet auf, ruft uns die Stimme» was an adequate presentation of composer’s style. The composer treats the human voice as equal to the orchestra. Therefore, the vocal-instrumental nature of Bach’s choral style needs another way of sound-building, a greater unity of voices than our home choral music needs. They consider specific methods and techniques of work on such executive factors as tempo-rhythm, strokes. The questions of choral vocal technique, in particular, vocal intonation (significance of timbre expression, usage of different types of respiration, clear diction, active articulation) are raised. J. S. Bach’s interpretation of voice as an instrument, demands from performers a great deal of its mobility, almost virtuosity, especially in contrapuntal sections. As for the vocal style of G. F. Handel, the influence of the operatic style, which is felt in his oratorios and cantatas is emphasized. Conclusions. The choir practice of students and performing by the student choir of German composers’ genius works, the communication of young performers with outstanding conductors, singers (including foreign ones) became for them the true school of craftsmanship, promoted the professional growth of the choir group, revealed its new performance capabilities. Choral music of J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel should move from the educational audiences of universities and academies to the specific halls. The works of genius need to include in student choral groups’ repertoire.

AbstractThis article analyses the musical work of the Brisbane Musical Union (BMU) between its founding in 1872 and the consolidation of its position by 1898. During this period, the BMU benefited from the dedicated leadership of its main conductor, R. T. Jefferies, who drew upon his high standing as a violinist, ensemble player and conductor in Brisbane to present regular choral concerts, mainly comprising oratorios, with an amateur choir. Despite financial challenges, difficulties over rehearsal and concert venues, periodic problems concerning the choice of repertoire, an insufficient number of available professional musicians and competition from rival local musical societies, Jefferies’ work with the BMU promoted an important aspect of high musical culture to the public and laid the foundations for further development of classical musical performance in Brisbane.

But his efforts to get a good, broad education were encouraged, particularly by his mother, whose strong socialist principles incorporated a great respect for education. During his years at a local state elementary school he attended various Sunday schools (attendance was required, but no particular denomination was specified), sang in a church choir, had free organ lessons from the organist, won an adult verse competition when aged nine and went to concerts of the Leicester Symphony Orchestra.

The aim of this research is to know about the relation between mastery of singing musical elements and personal stress condition in singing competition context. The fundamental reason of this research is the fact that there’s one of the benefits of singing activity, that is to reduce the personal stress condition being experienced (scientific reaserches’s results, relevant expert opinion); in other side, many scientific researches have been concluded that stress condition will be produced while someone have to perform in public, as example is singing activity on competition context. This qualitative research used case study approach at college choir; singing activity on competition context as material object, social psychology as formal object; FGD was used-to get the datas; subdividing datas or look for the datas pattern was used-to analyse the datas; musical theory of singing and stress concept were used-to interpret the datas. The result of this research is, that individual’s unpreparedness with mastery of singing musical elements on singing competition context will creates stress condition on doers.

Until recently, the world of the British barbershop singer was a self-enclosed community whose existence went largely unrecognised both by musicians involved in other genres and by the public at large. In the last few years this has started to change, chiefly due to the participation of barbershop choruses in the televised competition ‘Sainsbury's Choir of the Year’. Encouraged by the success of Shannon Express in 1994, many other choruses entered the 1996 competition, four of them reaching the televised semi-finals, and two the finals. During this increased exposure, it became apparent that television commentators had little idea of what to make of barbershoppers, indeed regarded them as a peculiar, and perhaps rather trivial, breed of performer. This bafflement is not surprising given the genre's relative paucity of exposure either in the mass media or in the musical and musicological press; the plentiful articles written by barbershoppers about their activity and its meanings are almost exclusively addressed to each other, to sustain the community rather than integrate it into wider musical life. The purpose of this paper, however, is not to follow the theme of these intra-community articles in arguing that barbershop harmony should actually be regarded as a serious and worthy art, or to explain to a bewildered world what this genre is actually about; rather, it aims to explore the way that barbershop singers theorise themselves and their activity to provide a case study in the relationship between social and musical values. That is, I am not writing as an apologist for a hitherto distinctly insular practice, but exploiting that very insularity as a means to pursue a potentially very broad question within a self-limited field of enquiry.

The paper presents the results of research regarding interest and motivation of pupils in elementary schools in Niš for choral singing. The motive for this research is the data on the reduced number of school choirs participating in competitions in Niš in the last ten years. The research was conducted in October and November of 2018/2019 school year in five elementary schools in Niš. A total of 100 pupils in upper grades (V to VIII grade) were interviewed, 50 of whom were members of the school choir and 50 who were not members of the school choir. The obtained results show that pupils' motivation for choral singing is influenced by certain social factors (curricula, socialization, gender, grade, success), while factors related to genre preferences do not influence the attitude towards choral singing. Considering the results of the research, it is considered that the pupil's participation in the choir is very important for her/his personal psycho-physical development and socialization. Therefore, the role of school, teachers and parents should be enhanced to increase pupil's motivation for group/choral singing.

Background. The present of the national musical culture is characterized by a kind of synthesis between imitation of the original folk-instrumental traditions with the latest ideological models and performing means. The art of bandura players also occupies a proper place in the development of academic folk instruments of Ukraine. A prominent place in the diversity of ensemble groups of large forms is occupied by the bandura band “Sun” of Kharkiv I. P. Kotlyarevsky National University of Arts, whose artistic director and conductor is a famous and talented bandura player, senior lecturer at the Department of Folk Instruments of Ukraine, Kharkiv National University of Arts Nadiya Melnik. The band has a unique performance portrait, relatively long creative path and its own genre and style specifics of development. Today the band is the only large educational bandura ensemble in Kharkiv, which presents the performing traditions of Sloboda Ukraine but, unfortunately, in the musicological discourse there are no studies on the creative activity of this artistic association, analysis of development specifics and its role in the development of bandura performance of Ukraine, which determines the relevance of the article. Many scholars such as: L. Yashchenko, V. Umanets, R. Kiyanovska, A.Ivanysh, T. Cherneta and others studied the development, the stages of formation and the specifics of activities of large bandura groups in Ukraine. The main attention of musicologists and bandura practitioners is devoted to the activities of powerful and leading large ensembles and bandura groups. Among them there are National Honored Bandura Band of Ukraine named after G. I. Mayboroda, bandura choir “Magician” of the Dnipro Academy of Music named after M. Glinka, bandura choir “Lyubava” of Poltava College of Arts named after M. V. Lysenko and others. However, the study of the creative activity of the bandura band “Sun” of Kharkiv I. P. Kotlyarevsky National University of Arts under the direction of N. V. Melnyk, which today has a strong potential and vividly represents the bandura performance not only of Kharkiv, but of Ukraine as a whole remains unnoticed. The purpose and objectives of the article are to highlight the main stages of formation and specifics of the creative activity of the bandore band “Sun” as a bright representative of modern bandura performance in Kharkov. To achieve this goal, the following tasks must be completed: – to identify the main stages of development of the bandura band “Sun”; – to analyze the performance and repertoire of the bandura band “Sun”; – to determine the specifics of the development of creative activity of the bandura band “Sun”. Methods. To achieve this goal and solve the main tasks of the article, the method of artistic and scientific research was used. Results. Basing on the method of art research, it was found that at the present stage the band is the only large group that represents the bandura performance not only of Kharkiv but also in the Sloboda region. Significant events in the artistic life of the participants are marked, which characterize the main milestones in the history of formation and development of the band: the period of the band, the first state recognition of bandura conductors as a professional artists, creation of a bandore band for the first time, winning the laureate title (I place at the all-Ukrainian competition which is called “Ring, bandura” (Dnepropetrovsk, 2004)). The synthesis of traditional performance forms with modern elements of music, combination of vocal and instrumental material and dramatization, melodic recitation, artistic experiments etc. is characteristic for the work of the artistic team. Conclusions. Summarizing all what is written above, we can say that the bandura band “Sun” is a powerful highly professional team with its own performance and drama approach, genre and style features and specific development features: combination of vocal-instrumental material and theatrical performance, melodic, etc. The high appreciation of the bandura players’ creative activity by the leading musicologists of Ukraine and the popularity of the famous artistic group testifies to its recognition in the musicological circle and among the fans of bandura performance in Kharkiv and in Ukraine as a whole.

Key words: copyright, jewelry, bijouterie, unfair competition, trademark, litigation Fedorova N. Foreing and domestic experience in protecting intellectual property right to jewelry and jewelry. The article focuses on studying the issue of protecting the design of artistic jewelry and bijouterie. The concept of “functionality” for jewelry is analyzed, namely, it is determined that the «functionality» notion is the quality of servicing the useful purpose. For example, a chair manufacturer cannot claim the four legs of a chair as a copyright. These four legs are a useful and functional aspect of this chair. If a competitor also manufactures a chair with 4 legs, it does not infringe any manufacturer's right, since these legs are for functional purposes only. The concept of«functionality» in jewelry means that the last cannot be protected as a normal work, since it is purely utilitarian. For example, the hands or numbers on the dial of a watch are considered as functional because the exclusive use of these aspects seriously impedes healthy competition in the watch industry. On the other hand, unique jewelry design cannot be considered functional as it has the exclusive use of its particular elements’ combination. The analysis of European legislation and US judicial practice is carried out. Under applicable US copyright law, jewelry is a subject to copyright. Under normal circumstances, the law does not require prior registration of jewelry copyright. However, in order to protect jewelry or bijouterie under the US Law on Copyright, it must meet certain conditions. The complaining party must provide evidence of illegal copying of the work and prove copyright infringement. In case of violation of copyright for jewelry, the author or the jewelry house must prove:•the originality of design;•the uniqueness in the elements combination in the process of jewelry design development. The object of an industrial design can be a shape, pattern, color, or their combination that determines the appearance of an industrial product. The main criterion for the industrial design patentability is its novelty. However, in practice, an examination for novelty when registering a designation as an industrial design, according to Alexandra Odinets, is not carried out, and the patent is issued «under the responsibility of the applicant».With regard to unfair competition in the jewelry market, according to the US jurisprudence, it is more often an offense in this context than a violation of trademark rights or copyright infringement. It is unfair competition that misleads a consumer. A competitor, by assigning a good name and an reputation established, is trying to get profit. The definition of unfair competition is carried out in a comprehensive manner, here the court will not focus on one feature of a piece of jewelry but would consider all its inherent features. In particular, it is a combination of unique elements that provide the originality of the product. The article provides recommendations for jewelry and bijouterie authors on copyright protection. 1. Background. The relevance of the topic of this article is determined by the trends of modern musicology to thorough studying the achievements of ensemble bandura performing, in order to use the practical experience of talented teachers-bandurists. As a result of the radical changes that took place in the cultural realm during the 1990s, the folk vocal-instrumental performing was a subject to stagnation. The mass character that had distinguished this area had been lost. However, the needs of contemporary (early 21st century) socio-cultural practices in the realities of existence of folk vocal-instrumental musical culture are increasingly being linked to the rethinking of former forms of collective music playing. After all, the folk vocal-instrumental performing is a form of manifestation of national consciousness, and therefore it functions as an important factor in restoring the Ukrainian national tradition. To bandura vocal-instrumental performing field a talented teacher, choirmaster, bandurist, master of making these musical instruments – Dmytro Vasyliovych Andrusenko (1895–1965) belongs, whose figure draws attention due to his contribution to pedagogical, cultural-educational, artistic space of some regions of Ukraine (Poltava, Sumy). Objectives. The article analyzes D. V. Andrusenko’s artistic-pedagogical activity. The peculiarities of work of the bandurist and conductor as an organizer and leader of children’s music collectives, capellas of bandurists and choirs, are highlighted. The results of the study. The pedagogical principles, techniques and methods of work of the teacher with the pupils in terms of mastering performing skills, development of vocal skills, civic and patriotic education are clarified. It should be emphasized that D. V. Andrusenko fruitfully worked not only as a musician, teacher, but also as a propagandist, popularizer of national culture. His pupils received musical, national-patriotic education, grew spiritually, enriched culturally. This is evidenced by their repertoire, which included a lot of songs in T. G. Shevchenko’s words, Ukrainian folk songs, classical works, as well as songs of different peoples – the members of the collectives got a spirit of respectful attitude towards musical cultures of other countries. As the organizer and leader of the collectives, D. V. Andrusenko taught his pupils vocal skills and playing bandura. He used the principles of music didactics to solve these problems. D. V. Andrusenko used such a system to work with bandurists of his capella, which was based on the leader methods of music pedagogy. His system included learning the techniques of playing the instrument, step by step, formation of pupils’ technical skills, systematic exercises. As a highly skilled choirmaster, D. V. Andrusenko used in his pedagogical arsenal the necessary basic methods of work for the formation of the voice apparatus of his pupils. The important task of the choir teacher is correct, vocally competent distribution of the pupils’ voices. This part of work was not difficult for D. V. Andrusenko, since he was a choirmaster of the high level, had absolute pitch. Musical-pedagogical activity of D. V. Andrusenko was connected with institutions of education and culture. On the basis of education institutions and houses of culture he organized large creative collectives: capellas of bandurists, choirs, instrumental ensembles. According to the memoirs of witnesses and participants of the collectives, their head, while selecting future pupils among the schoolchildren, carefully listened to each person. The selection was serious, the best pupils came to the collectives. It should be mentioned that D. V. Andrusenko – a teacher, musician, master – was an example for his pupils. They all mention him with respect, emphasizing his exceptional professionalism, intelligence, education and high moral qualities. Conclusions. Thus, the conducted research proves the presence of general pedagogical foundations in D. V. Andrusenko’s work with children’s musical collectives, the use of the leading principles of music teaching, such as: systematicity and graduality; availability of knowledge; retention of learning (by the methods of repetition, exercises); individual approach to the learning process; student and teacher activity; ostensiveness, visibility, clarity (by methods of showing and explanation); communication of learning with life practices; formation of a situations of creative competition and encouragement to success. The principles and methods used by D. V. Andrusenko as a teacher in his work with amateur musical teams have not lost their relevance today.

In 1873 the chair of geology at the University of Cambridge fell vacant following the death of Adam Sedgwick. Nine candidates stepped forward, hoping to fill the post. The correspondence generated in the ensuing battle illuminates two areas of particular interest. First, the strategies hidden behind bland lists of successive professors: candidates, peers and patrons manoeuvred to influence the outcome of the competition and competitors tried to reinforce their geological respectability by collecting testimonials from estimable geological acquaintances. Second, the Woodwardian competition inspired some outspoken opinions from British geologists about the relative worth of the candidates, which offer a fresh perspective on the process of professionalization in nineteenth-century science. The applicants came from various backgrounds, including gentlemanly amateurs, clerical geologists, Survey geologists and professors. Judging from the opinions of their peers, it seems that a non-professional or clerical status was rarely of primary concern in defining geological respectability at this time.

Vegetable grafting has primarily been used in the commercial production of high-value crops in the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. In this study, we explored the feasibility of making a novel graft between pac choi (Brassica rapa L. var. chinensis) and daikon radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. longipinnatus) to create a plant with harvestable pac choi leafy vegetable above-ground, and a daikon radish taproot below-ground. ‘Mei Qing Choi’ pac choi (scion) was grafted onto ‘Bora King’ daikon radish (rootstock). Grafted pac choi–daikon radish plants did not show a decrease in SPAD value, canopy size, leaf number, leaf area, or above-ground weight compared with self-grafted pac choi plants. However, taproot formation was reduced in grafted pac choi–daikon radish plants, as shown by decreased taproot length, diameter, fresh weight, and dry weight compared with non- and self-grafted daikon radish plants. Surprisingly, grafting with radish increased the photosynthetic rate of the pac choi. This pilot study demonstrated the potential of creating a new pac choi–daikon radish vegetable product to help save growing space and minimize waste at consumption, as pac choi roots are not eaten and radish leaves are usually discarded. The inter-generic grafting between B. rapa var. chinensis and R. sativus var. longipinnatus could also provide a unique model system to help elucidate scion-rootstock synergy and above- and below-ground sink competition in horticultural crops.

The international academic journal publishing landscape is complex and in continuous flux. Many Russian editors and publishers wish to bring their journals into the global mainstream and to develop internationally competitive profiles for their work. Bibliometric citation systems are one means by which the quality of journals, of articles and researchers, can be assessed, referenced and compared. Scopus and the Web of Science are two major and respected quality assurance systems for global publishing, within which many academic journals seek formal listings. These listings help develop a wider international profi for any journal. They also provide valuable data through which journals can benchmark their performance against all other journals in any subject fi In turn, this information helps to stimulate competition and quality improvement across the entire academic journal ecosystem. Scopus provides a transparent and continually evolving evaluation and feedback system for journals seeking a listing and those journals that have already been listed within Scopus. An application for a Scopus listing is a process through which a journal is evaluated by several quantitative and qualitative criteria against global benchmarks. A successful listing can sometimes require a series of strategic insights and developments by editors and publishers over several years. In this article, Dr David Rew, a practising clinician and the Subject Chair for Medicine to the Scopus Content Selection Advisory Board since 2009, distils the experience of evaluation of more than 2000 Medical and Health Sciences journals to guide as to what features and strategies give academic journals a better chance of long term success in the competitive world of global academic publishing.

The surviving archival records, however, tell a remarkably different story. Neither Fisher nor Hogben was ever an official candidate for the chair. Indeed, Fisher seems not to have applied for the position at all, and Hogben was approached only behind the scenes of the official search. Formulation of the problem. The modern choral art as never requires a theoretical understanding of the artistic experience accumulated over the years of its existence and enriched with the latest advances in this field. The bloom of the high professional choral performance in Ukraine shows, first of all, the active development of choral culture in practical terms, but unfortunately, in many theoretical aspects of the choral art there are significant gaps. Since in Ukraine a galaxy of dedicated experts in the field of the choral work function fruitfully, among whom the territory of the Slobozhanshchina region can boast the well-known name of Prokopov Sergiy Mykolayevych – the Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, Professor, Head of the Choral Conducting Department of Kharkiv National University of Arts named after I. P. Kotlyarevsky, the coverage of the concept of the creative universalism of the famous Ukrainian conductor-choirmaster seems to be of a high relevance. The purpose of the article is to study a wide range of artistic activities of S. Prokopov in the aspect of identifying various vectors of creativity of this talented artist: his performances, scientific works and pedagogical guides, musical and public activities. Analysis of the recent research and publications. The study of each of the directions of the creative activities of the artist is not possible in isolation from the consideration of the main trends in the modern choral art. Ukrainian musicology is on the way of rethinking the classical methodological recommendations and finding new theoretical and practical approaches to the study of many aspects of the choral activity. The recent publications by such scholars as L. Parkhomenko, A. Lashchenko, L. Kiyanovska, A. Martyniuk, L. Yarosevich, O. Batovska, Y. Voskoboinikova and many others confirm the relevance of issues related to the genesis and the further development of the choral art. Research methods. The system analysis of the universe of the creative personality of the artist is the methodological basis of the study. Presenting the main material. Sergiy Prokopov is a well-known conductor-choirmaster, prominent teacher and musical-public figure in Ukraine and abroad. After many years of study, under the influence of the outstanding masters of the conducting-choral art A. A. Miroshnikova, E. P. Kudryavtseva, V. O. Chernushenko and A. V. Mikhailov the main methodological principles of teaching professional disciplines finally formed, and they found their embodiment in the further professional pedagogical activity of S. M. Prokopov. The research of the performing-pedagogical vector of the master’s work made it possible to analyse one of the most important spheres of activity of S. M. Prokopov – the work with children’s choir collectives. We should note that the sound of the choir called “The Spring Voices” is distinguished by the high quality of ensemble work, the most charming features of the children’s voice – ease, charm, and flying. The repertoire of the choir is extremely wide and diverse from the Renaissance to contemporary domestic and foreign compositions, different in genres and subjects, which is quite difficult for the amateur team. That is why the professional recognition of the children’s choir under the guidance of S. M. Prokopov is confirmed by many honorary awards of national and international competitions and choral festivals. Following the traditions of Kharkiv choral school, Prokopov S. M., while heading the choir of the students of the Choral Conducting Department of KhNUA named after I. P. Kotlyarevsky, greatly changed not only the repertoire policy of the choir, but also revised the correlation of teaching-educational and concert-performing tasks. The choral class is not only a solid base platform for the professional education of future choirmasters-specialists. The choir of students, under the guidance of S. M. Prokopov, is a full-fledged performing collective, whose power makes it possible to perform compositions of great forms. Working on the sound of the choir, at the stage of a warm-up, he relies on the artistic principles of the sound production, which represent a peculiar emotional and psychological setting for the further professional communication between the choirmaster and the singers. Such accentuation of attention on the complex of psychological tasks during the performance of vocal-choral exercises helps to combine and correlate the emotional and psychological state and technical capabilities of the singers with subsequent performing intentions. The key to the work of the master is a special relation to the interaction of the language and musical intonation. Expressiveness as a conscious singing is impossible without the right intonation, a clear pronunciation, an emotional exaltation in the process of performing a choral composition. The pedagogical activity of S. M. Prokopov continues in the class on conducting and relies on both the methodical foundations, theoretical positions, the generalizations of outstanding teachers, choirmasters, symphony conductors and many years of the own experience of the teacher, the conductor, and the conductor-choirmaster. Actually, his pedagogical style is characterized by a high level of culture, sophisticated taste, and deep knowledge of the specialty and in the related fields of both the humanities and social sciences. The sphere of interests of scientific activity of S. М. Prokopov covers various areas of the choral art. The scientific and methodical works by S. M. Prokopov outlines a range of issues related to the problems of the choral performance, the choral pedagogy and the educational process of formation of conductors-choirmasters at different stages of development. Professor S. M. Prokopov’s active and responsible life position prompts him for the public-education activities. Holding the post of the Head of the Kharkiv branch of the Association called “The Choir Society named after M. Leontovych”, on his initiative the significant competitions and festivals of the choral art take place, and they are known not only within Ukraine but also abroad. Sergiy Mykolayevych presents reports on the relevant issues of the choral art at international and all-Ukrainian conferences, conducts numerous master classes, lectures and concerts. Conclusions and the perspectives of the further research. Sergiy Prokopov is an example of a universal musician. To highlight one, the main of the directions of his activities is impossible. The teacher, choral conductor, scientist, talented organizer and musical-public figure, his work is a vivid example of creative and personal enthusiasm. The prospect of the further development of the topic is related to the in-depth study of the various spectra of S. M. Prokopov’s creative activities, his personal contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture.

Kansei Engineering is a technical methodology to translate consumer’s Kansei into product design elements. The target of this technology is to provide designers and manufacturers with a technique to master the emotional and spiritual needs of consumers and then manifest them in product design to enhance competitive edge. In light of this situation and on the basis of finishing a lot of English literature reading about this technology, the author conducted systematical study about Kansei Engineering in this thesis with the aim to enhance understanding of it for domestic designers and accelerate spread of it. Basing on the study about the situations of China’s domestic design industry, the author analyzed several points that China’s design industry should learn from Japan and Kansei Engineering technology, and proposed a simplified Kansei Engineering Model which is easier to execute and suitable for domestic design industry. In conclusion, this paper gives an introduction to the theory of Kansei Engineering system, and explores the relationship between consumer's desire and massage chair design factor with the SD (Semantic Differential) method, providing effective reference for the massage chair design.

Abstract We conducted previously a prospective evaluation of the relative chair-time consumption between various clinical activities (chemotherapy administration, RBC transfusion, other treatment related events) at the LRCP. Transfusions were reported to occupy at least twice as much chair-time relative to an average chemotherapy session. We report here a retrospective analysis of the LRCP electronic database over a 6-month period to further evaluate clinic resource utilization. A total of 11016 clinic visits were documented and analyzed, of which 83% involved an active treatment session (chemotherapy/transfusion). The most prevalent tumours (>60%) were breast, gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU) and gynecological (GYN) cancers. Hematologic malignancies accounted for <20% of all tumour types, where myeloma and lymphoma constituted >50% of this cohort. One hundred seventy-one patients received a total of 337 transfusions (656 RBC units), of which the majority were solid (58.5%) and hematologic (40.9%) tumour patients. The transfusion trigger was observed at Hb <80g/L (mean 76.5 +/− 12.3g/L) and on average 1.9 +/− 0.3 units of blood were administered on each occasion. The incidence of transfusion (Mean 7.5 & 6.0 per transfused patient) and units of blood administered (Mean 15 & 12 units per transfused patient) were highest among chronic myeloproliferative disorder and non-malignant hematology patients. Based on our previous reported transfusion chair-time (i.e. Chair-time occupied by a patient while receiving 1 RBC unit, independent of time consumed by pre-/post-transfusion related nursing and laboratory activities) at 109 +/- 19 minutes, an estimated 71504 minutes were consumed by all RBC transfusions, constituting 5.4% of all LRCP out-patient clinic chair-time events. Only 11% of all transfused patients were treated with an erythropoietin receptor agonist (ERA), corroborating with published literature that ERAs are highly effective in reducing the transfusion burden of oncology patients. This study also identified a major discrepancy between the blood bank’s record of distributed blood and LRCP’s record of transfused blood. A total of 129 transfusions (37%) were not documented on the LRCP database but were administered to patients, of which 20% took place on stretcher beds. As hospital billings rely solely on this database, about 26923 min of clinic time and hospital resources that were utilized was not funded. A very conservative estimate of unbilled nursing time ($30/hr) alone translates into a minimum of $13461 over the study period. In conclusion, RBC transfusion consumes a significant proportion of chair-time at the LRCP, which could otherwise be more efficiently utilized by chemotherapy administration. Chemotherapy protocols commonly administered to GYN (platinum based) and lymphoma (combination regimens containing rituximab) patients are previously reported to be the most chair-time consuming (Median 3–4 hr, up to 7–8hrs). Since these tumour types accounted for a significant proportion of the patient population who receive care at the LRCP, an intense competition for chair-time and nursing resources that could lead to clinic cancellations and delayed treatment had likely occurred. A greater application of transfusion alternatives (e.g. ERAs) could reserve such facilities for their intended purposes, thus allowing the timely administration of chemotherapy and optimization of clinic resource utilization.

In this study we address the question of how lexical selection is achieved by bilingual speakers during speech production. Specifically, we test whether there is competition between the two lexicons of a bilingual during lexical access. In two picture–word interference experiments we explore the performance of two groups of bilinguals, English–Spanish and Spanish–English proficient bilinguals while naming pictures either in their L1 (Spanish) or in their L2 (Spanish). Picture naming was facilitated when the name of the picture and the distracter word were the “same”, regardless of the language in which the distracter was printed: same-language (e.g., mesa–mesa [table in Spanish]) or different-language pairs (e.g., mesa–table). The magnitude of this facilitatory effect was similar when naming in L1 (Experiment 1) and in L2 (Experiment 2). We also found that naming latencies were slower when the distracter word was semantically related to the picture's name (e.g., mesa–chair), regardless of the language in which the distracter was printed. The results suggest that there is no competition between the two lexicons of a bilingual during lexical access for production. This interpretation favors a model of lexical access in which lexical selection is language-specific both when speaking in L1 and in L2.

New geometrical architectures of chair- and V-shaped supramolecular liquid crystalline complexes were molded through 1:1 intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between 4-(4-(hexyloxy)phenylazo)methyl)phenyl nicotinate and 4-alkoxybenzoic acids. The length of terminal alkoxy acid chains varied, n = 6 to 16 carbons. The mesomorphic behaviour of these complexes was examined through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was carried out to confirm the presence of Fermi bands that appeared for the hydrogen bonding formation. Enantiotropic nematic phases were observed and covered all lengths of alkoxy chains. The geometrical structures of the prepared supramolecular complexes geometries were estimated by Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The supramolecular complexes I/An are projected to exhibit a nonlinear geometry with V-shaped and chair-shaped geometry. The chair-shaped conformers of I/An were found to be more stable than V-shaped isomeric complexes. Moreover, the effect of the change of the mesogenic core on the mesophase thermal stability (TC) has been investigated by a comparative study of the present azo supramolecular H-bonding LCs (SMHBCs) I/An and our previously reported their Schiff base analogue complexes, II/An. The findings of the DFT illustrated the high impact of CH=N as a mesogenic core on the mesomorphic behavior in terms of the competitive lateral and terminal intermolecular interactions as well as the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP).

This issue of the journal sees the publication of the 3 papers placed first, second and third in the 2005 International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) Research Awards in Psychogeriatrics. For the first time in the history of the awards (first presented in 1989 and awarded at each biennial IPA Congress thereafter), entries were limited to junior investigators within five years of the award of their terminal degree who were at no higher than Assistant Professor/Instructor level at the time of submission. The awards were judged by a panel of four comprising Bengt Winblad (panel chair and 12th IPA Congress chair), David Ames (editor International Psychogeriatrics), John O'Brien (deputy editor International Psychogeriatrics and 12th IPA Congress Scientific Steering Committee Chair) and Joel Sadavoy (then President elect of IPA). The field comprised 11 papers from nine countries (Canada, China (including the Special Administrative region of Hong Kong), Greece, Egypt, the Netherlands, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Uganda and the U.S.A.) and contained several papers which in a less competitive field would have been worthy recipients of an award. In addition to the three award winning papers, in an unprecedented decision the judges approved a special citation for a fourth submission entitled “Psychiatric disorders among the elderly on non-psychiatric wards in an African setting” by Noeline Nakasujja of Uganda for “Outstanding Research Endeavors undertaken in a previously un-researched field, in the face of unusual operational challenges.”

For companies to survive and thrive in today's market, a key strategy is to leverage innovation capability through an effective process of converting unmet customer needs into successful products, creating value for customers, the company and other stakeholders. This work demonstrates how Lean becomes a pre-competitive factor in product innovation through customer value focus. The goal is to determine the applicability of user-centered methodologies in generating input that ultimately leads to differentiated products. An office chair case study implies that although user-focus is necessary, this will not inevitably lead to novel products, since users are engrossed with past and present.
