The Choch oasis is one of the regions that have had trade, economic and cultural relations with the countries of the Central Asian region since ancient times. By the VI-VIII centuries, economic relations reached their peak. During this period, Choch's trade and economic relations with the Chinese dynasties and diplomatic relations took an important place. As early as the III-IV centuries AD, the Choch people had intensive trade relations with the Sughd merchants who had trade colonies in the regions of Eastern Turkestan. The common interests of the Western Turkic Khanate and the upper class of Sughd caused Sughd merchants to take a leading position in trade and economic relations in the eastern direction[21], which created the ground for Choch and Sughd people, who actively participated in these relations, to occupy the international markets of the great Silk Road trade. Marcela é uma planta medicinal de largo uso popular, cujas propriedades despertam interesse da indústria farmacêutica. Com o objetivo de avaliar sementes de diferentes procedências e épocas de coleta, aquênios de marcela foram coletados em Eldorado do Sul e Viamão/RS, em 11 de março; 24 de março e 11 de abril. Os aquênios foram classificados em cheios, intermediários e chochos, conforme seu tamanho, coloração e rugosidade do pericarpo. A umidade foi determinada pelo método da estufa a 105ºC (± 3ºC/24h), o vigor foi avaliado pelo teste de condutividade elétrica e velocidade de germinação. A germinação foi testada a 20ºC e iluminação constante. Os lotes de 24 de março reuniram melhores características, pois aliaram maior quantidade de sementes cheias (58%), com vigor e germinação (64%) satisfatórios. Sementes de 11 de abril, embora tenham atingido maior germinação (82%), apresentaram grande quantidade de sementes chochas (49%), baixando a qualidade do lote. Em 11 de março, as sementes apresentaram significativamente maior umidade, caracterizando sua imaturidade. Os lotes coletados em Eldorado do Sul/RS apresentaram qualidade superior àqueles provenientes de Viamão/RS, evidenciando diferenças populacionais. A melhor época de coleta foi em 24 de março; a maturação das sementes parece estar relacionada à senescência da planta mãe.

This paper illustrates and discusses recurrent sound correspondences between Pumé (also known as Yaruro) and Chocoan languages. Pumé is a language of the Apure state of Venezuela and has so far been considered an isolate. Chocoan is a small language family of western Colombia and eastern Panama. Until now, these language groups have never been considered together and compared systematically. It is argued here that the recurrent sound correspondences attested in Chocoan and Pumé basic vocabulary are difficult to explain by coincidence or language contact. It is therefore concluded that there should be enough evidence to postulate a genealogical link between both language groups.

Abstract. Glyoxal (CHOCHO) is produced in the atmosphere by the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Like formaldehyde (HCHO), another VOC oxidation product, it is measurable from space by solar backscatter. Isoprene emitted by vegetation is the dominant source of CHOCHO and HCHO in most of the world. We use aircraft observations of CHOCHO and HCHO from the SENEX campaign over the southeast US in summer 2013 to better understand the CHOCHO time-dependent yield from isoprene oxidation, its dependence on nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2), the behavior of the CHOCHO–HCHO relationship, the quality of OMI CHOCHO satellite observations, and the implications for using CHOCHO observations from space as constraints on isoprene emissions. We simulate the SENEX and OMI observations with the Goddard Earth Observing System chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) featuring a new chemical mechanism for CHOCHO formation from isoprene. The mechanism includes prompt CHOCHO formation under low-NOx conditions following the isomerization of the isoprene peroxy radical (ISOPO2). The SENEX observations provide support for this prompt CHOCHO formation pathway, and are generally consistent with the GEOS-Chem mechanism. Boundary layer CHOCHO and HCHO are strongly correlated in the observations and the model, with some departure under low-NOx conditions due to prompt CHOCHO formation. SENEX vertical profiles indicate a free-tropospheric CHOCHO background that is absent from the model. The OMI CHOCHO data provide some support for this free-tropospheric background and show southeast US enhancements consistent with the isoprene source but a factor of 2 too low. Part of this OMI bias is due to excessive surface reflectivities assumed in the retrieval. The OMI CHOCHO and HCHO seasonal data over the southeast US are tightly correlated and provide redundant proxies of isoprene emissions. Higher temporal resolution in future geostationary satellite observations may enable detection of the prompt CHOCHO production under low-NOx conditions apparent in the SENEX data.

Abstract. Glyoxal, the smallest dicarbonyl, which has recently been observed from space, is expected to provide indications on volatile organic compounds (VOC) oxidation and secondary aerosol formation in the troposphere. Glyoxal (CHOCHO) is known to be mostly of natural origin and is produced during biogenic VOC oxidation. However, a number of anthropogenically emitted hydrocarbons, like acetylene and aromatics, have been positively identified as CHOCHO precursors. The present study investigates the contribution of pollution to the CHOCHO levels by taking into account the secondary chemical formation of CHOCHO from precursors emitted from biogenic, anthropogenic and biomass burning sources. The impact of potential primary land emissions of CHOCHO is also investigated. A global 3-dimensional chemistry transport model of the troposphere (TM4-ECPL) able to simulate the gas phase chemistry coupled with all major aerosol components is used. The secondary anthropogenic contribution from fossil fuel and industrial VOCs emissions oxidation to the CHOCHO columns is found to reach 20–70% in the industrialized areas of the Northern Hemisphere and 3–20% in the tropics. This secondary CHOCHO source is on average three times larger than that from oxidation of VOCs from biomass burning sources. The chemical production of CHOCHO is calculated to equal to about 56 Tg y−1 with 70% being produced from biogenic hydrocarbons oxidation, 17% from acetylene, 11% from aromatic chemistry and 2% from ethene and propene. CHOCHO is destroyed in the troposphere primarily by reaction with OH radicals (23%) and by photolysis (63%), but it is also removed from the atmosphere through wet (8%) and dry deposition (6%). Potential formation of secondary organic aerosol through CHOCHO losses on/in aerosols and clouds is neglected here due to the significant uncertainties associated with the underlying chemistry. The global annual mean CHOCHO burden and lifetime in the model domain are estimated to be 0.02 Tg (equal to the global burden seen by SCIAMACHY over land for the year 2005) and about 3 h, respectively. The model results are compared with satellite observations of CHOCHO columns. When accounting only for the secondary sources of CHOCHO in the model, the model underestimates CHOCHO columns observed by satellites. This is attributed to an overestimate of CHOCHO sinks or a missing global source of about 20 Tg y−1. Using the current primary emissions of CHOCHO from biomass burning together with the anthropogenic combustion sources of about 7 Tg y−1 leads to an overestimate by the model over hot spot areas.

Abstract. The direct detection of glyoxal (CHOCHO), the smallest α-dicarbonyl, in the open atmosphere by active differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) has recently been demonstrated (Volkamer et al., 2005a) and triggered the very recent successful detection of CHOCHO from space (Kurosu et al., 2005; Wittrock et al., 2006; Beirle et al., 2006). Here we report the first detection of CHOCHO by passive multi axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS). CHOCHO and NO2 slant column measurements were conducted at MIT, Cambridge, USA, and on board the research vessel Ron Brown in the Gulf of Maine as part of the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) 2004 campaign. For a day with nearly clear sky conditions, radiative transfer modeling was employed to derive diurnal CHOCHO mixing ratios for both sites. CHOCHO mixing ratios at MIT varied from 40 to 120 ppt, with peak values observed around noon. Mixing ratios over the Gulf of Maine were found to be up to 3 times larger than at MIT. The CHOCHO-to-NO2ratio at MIT was <0.03, and enhancements of this ratio by up to two orders of magnitude were found over the Gulf of Maine. This paper focuses on the instrumental aspects involved with MAX-DOAS measurements of CHOCHO.

Abstract. Glyoxal (CHOCHO) and formaldehyde (HCHO) are intermediate products in the tropospheric oxidation of the majority of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). CHOCHO is also a precursor of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere. CHOCHO and HCHO are released from biogenic, anthropogenic, and pyrogenic sources. CHOCHO and HCHO tropospheric lifetimes are typically considered to be short during the daytime at mid-latitudes (e.g. several hours), as they are rapidly removed from the atmosphere by their photolysis, oxidation by OH, and uptake on particles or deposition. At night and at high latitudes, tropospheric lifetimes increase to many hours or even days. Previous studies demonstrated that CHOCHO and HCHO vertical column densities (VCDs) are well retrieved from space-borne observations using differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS). In this study, we present CHOCHO and HCHO VCDs retrieved from measurements by TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument), launched on the Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) platform in October 2017. We observe strongly elevated amounts of CHOCHO and HCHO during the 2018 fire season in British Columbia, Canada, where a large number of fires occurred in August. CHOCHO and HCHO plumes from individual fire hot spots are observed in air masses travelling over distances of up to 1500 km, i.e. much longer than expected for the relatively short tropospheric lifetime expected for CHOCHO and HCHO. Comparison with simulations by the particle dispersion model FLEXPART (FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model) indicates that effective lifetimes of 20 h and more are needed to explain the observations of CHOCHO and HCHO if they decay in an effective first-order process. FLEXPART used in the study calculates accurately the transport. In addition an exponential decay, in our case assumed to be photochemical, of a species along the trajectory is added. We have used this simple approach to test our assumption that CHOCHO and HCHO are created in the fires and then decay at a constant rate in the plume as it is transported. This is clearly not the case and we infer that CHOCHO and HCHO are either efficiently recycled during transport or continuously formed from the oxidation of longer-lived precursors present in the plume, or possibly a mixture of both. We consider the best explanation of the observed CHOCHO and HCHO VCD in the plumes of the fire is that they are produced by oxidation of longer-lived precursors, which were also released by the fire and present in the plume.

Problem: Utfallet av att vara infekterad i sepsis är beroende av tidigt insatt behandling. På grund av det snabba sjukdomsförloppet är det avgörande för patientens överlevnad att adekvat behandling ges tidigt i förloppet, detta kräver att sjuksköterskan har kunskap om de tidiga tecknen som uppvisas vid sepsis. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka vilka åtgärder sjuksköterskan ska vidta för att tidigt upptäcka sepsis hos patienter. Metod: Studien är en litteraturstudie med 13 vetenskapliga artiklar som samlades in och granskades. Resultat och konklusion: Resultatet visar att sjuksköterskans deltagande i utbildning, uppmärksammande av riskgrupper och strukturerade användning av skattningsskalor medförde tidigare upptäckt av sepsis hos patienter, vilket hade betydelse för patienternas mortalitet. Implikation: Litteraturstudien visar att tidigare forskning främst är fokuserad på behandlingsåtgärder, och att det finns lite kunskap om vad sjuksköterskan kan göra för att tidigt upptäcka sepsis. Det behövs därför mer forskning om sjuksköterskans specifika roll för att tidigt upptäcka sepsis samt om vilken skattningsskala som bör användas. Då sepsis är vanligt, svårupptäckt och incidensen ökar, bör sjuksköterskan ha fördjupade kunskaper om sepsis. Mer utbildning om sepsis ska inkluderas i sjuksköterskeutbildningen och som fortbildning på arbetsplatser.

Studien undersöker de bakomliggande faktorer som påverkar män och kvinnors fördelning av föräldrapenning på kommunnivå i Sverige. Uppsatsen syftar även till att analysera huruvida dessa mönster påverkades under finanskrisen åren 2008-2010, då samhället möttes av en exogen chock och arbetsmarknaden blev osäker. Med utgångspunkt från tidigare studier och ekonomisk teori genomförs regressionsanalyser med tre olika estimationsmetoder. Pooled OLS, Random- och Fixed effect model. Resultatet av den empiriska analysen uppskattar att majoriteten av de förklarande variablerna, exempelvis inkomst och utbildning, förklarar en del av föräldrapenningens fördelning mellan könen. Under finanskrisen såg uttaget av föräldrapenningdagar annorlunda ut mellan män och kvinnor, det konstateras därför att traditionella könsnormer fortfarande har en inverkan.

This paper examines the major potential drivers of five international real estate markets with a focus on pushing versus pulling effects. Using a quantile regression approach for the period 2000-2015 we examine the coefficients during three different market conditions: downward (bearish), normal (median) and upward (bullish). Using monthly data we look at five of the larger securitized property markets, namely, the US, UK, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. We find inconclusively that stock market volatility, as measured by the pushing factor VIXS&P500, best informs property market returns during bearish market environment. We also find that our pulling factors, money supply, treasury yields and unemployment presents theoretically grounded results in most cases with the expected signage. However, compared to the volatility index, pulling factors are not as uniformly suited for informing property market returns during bearish markets. We also find a range of insignificant results, which might be indicative of a suboptimal model specification and/or choice of estimation method.

Följande studie undersöker hur Expressen har gestaltat våldtäktsfall med okänd gärningsman. Sex artiklar publicerade mellan 90-talet och 10-talet analyseras med syfte att undersöka om gestaltningen har förändrats över tid i en av Sveriges största kvällstidningar. På så sätt kan studien bidra till ökad förståelse för huruvida svensk kvällspress förstärker eller utmanar samhällsuppfattningar om vem som är en potentiell gärningsman och vem som får status som offer. Som metod tillämpas en kvalitativ innehållsanalys som genomförs med utgångspunkt i gestaltningsteorin, teorin om nyhetsvärdering, det ideala offret och medielogikens dramaturgi. Artiklarna analyseras utefter fem teman: rubrik, ingress, miljö, gärningsman och offer. Studiens resultat visar att en förändring har skett från ett subjektivt och väl detaljerat narrativ till ett mer objektivt och aktsamt narrativ i Expressens nyhetsrapportering. Studien visar även att Expressen på 90-talet har gestaltat ideala gärningsmän genom monstruösa beskrivningar. Gradvis har en förändring skett, där gärningsmannen på senare år gestaltas som gemene man. Förändringarna i Expressens gestaltning tyder på att dagens gestaltning förmedlar en bred bild av vem som kan bli ett offer och vem som är benägen att utföra en våldtäkt.

La presente investigación se desarrolló en las comunidades de Chocán y Arreypite Pingola, en el departamento de Piura, distrito de Ayabaca; Chocán ubicado a 12 km de la provincia de Ayabaca y Arreypite Pingola ubicada a 13.2km de la provincia de Ayabaca. Comunidades dedicadas principalmente a la actividad agrícola, elegidas ambas comunidades para este estudio por su vinculación de mercado. El objetivo principal de esta investigación fue demostrar que los principales factores que limitan el desarrollo agrícola en las comunidades campesinas de Chocán y Arreypite Pingola son las condiciones agroecológicas, la asistencia técnica y la disponibilidad de recursos, para lo cual se desarrolló los siguientes objetivos específicos como son: comparar las dos comunidades para determinar cuál de ellas presenta mejor desarrollo agrícola, y determinar el alcance y las perspectivas de los diferentes sistemas agrícolas encontrados. La investigación fue cuantitativa- transversal, con diseño metodológico de tipo correlacional ya que se buscó determinar la correlación que existe entre el desarrollo agrícola y los factores limitantes. Las actividades antropogénicas ocasionan el incremento de metales pesados en los suelos, para mitigar esta contaminación se vienen implementando métodos como la fitorremediación. El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la capacidad fitorremediadora de Lupinus mutabilis Sweet en suelos contaminados con cadmio. Los ensayos se realizaron en un invernadero bajo condiciones controladas. Las plantas fueron sometidas a cuatro tratamientos: T1 - 4 mg, T2 - 8 mg, T3 - 12 mg, T4 - 16 mg de CdSO4/L respectivamente y un control T0, aplicados en diferentes periodos. El efecto del cadmio a nivel morfológico fue determinado evaluando el daño ocasionado en la raíz, tallos y foliolos. Los cortes histológicos fueron realizados en un micrótomo manual Leica, la tinción desarrollada con hematoxilina-eosina y luego fueron visualizados en un microscopio ocular Leica. La tasa de supervivencia se calculó mediante la relación entre el número de plantas en un determinado tiempo y el número de plantas iniciales. El índice de tolerancia se obtuvo mediante la proporción de la biomasa del vástago de las plantas tratadas y la biomasa del vástago de las plantas control. La concentración de cadmio en la planta y el sustrato se obtuvo mediante espectrofotometría de absorción atómica de llama. La mayor acumulación de cadmio fue de 3.13 mg/kg en las raíces, 0.15 mg/kg en tallo y 0.13 mg/kg en foliolos, en el tratamiento T4, donde también se evidenció la mayor reducción de cadmio en el sustrato. El efecto morfológico e histológico fue notorio en el sistema radicular a los 20 días de exposición mientras que en el tallo y los foliolos a los 50 días de exposición. El índice de tolerancia se determinó en un rango entre 68.29% (T1) y 28.36% (T4). La tasa de supervivencia más baja fue de 0.33 en el tratamiento T4. El índice de tolerancia, la tasa de supervivencia y el efecto del cadmio a nivel morfológico e histológico, demostraron que existe una capacidad fitorremediadora reducida, la cual se ve afectada con el aumento del cadmio.

This study examines the semantic extension of mano ‘hand’ and pie ‘foot’ to their contemporary senses of ‘upper limb’ and ‘lower limb’ in Spanish varieties of Antioquia, Colombia. This dialectally idiosyncratic pattern, hitherto unexplained in the literature, is accounted for here as the combined outcome of adult acquisition among various groups. First, Chocoan languages predominating in the region throughout the early colonial period show a congruent pattern in the lexemes for ‘upper limb’ (e.g., Embera Chamí húa) and ‘lower limb’ (e.g., Embera Catío hẽ́ɾṹ), and their speakers plausibly initiated the change via L1 transfer. Chroniclers’ accounts also reveal that Antioquia’s earliest Europeans relied heavily upon enslaved African(-descendants), and records of ships carrying enslaved peoples to the nearby port cities demonstrate that much of the African-born population in 16th-century Antioquia spoke languages with congruent patterns also (e.g., Kikongo kóoko ‘upper limb’ and kúulu ‘lower limb’). It is proposed that adult Spanish learners with these L1s reinforced the innovative variant.

A numerical analysis of the flow field in rough microchannel is carried out with a finite volume compressible solver, including generalized Maxwell slip flow boundary conditions suitable for arbitrary geometries. Roughness geometry is modeled as a series of triangular shaped obstructions. Relative roughness from 0% to 2.65% were considered. Since for truly compressible flow we have no fully developed flow condition, the simulation is performed over the whole length of the channel. A wide range of Mach number is considered, from nearly incompressible to chocked flow conditions. Flow conditions with Reynolds number up to around 200 were computed. The outlet Knudsen number corresponding to the chosen range of Mach and Reynolds number ranges from very low value to 0.0249. Performance charts are presented in terms of both average and local Poiseuille number as a function of local Kn, Ma and Re. In particular, it appears that roughness strongly decreases the reduction in pressure loss due to rarefaction. Thus, roughness effect is stronger at high Kn. Furthermore, compressibility effect has a major effect on pressure drop, as soon as local Mach number exceed 0.3.

In the present study, a numerical simulation was conducted to investigate the influence of surface roughness on the aerodynamic performance of a 1.5-stage highly loaded axial compressor at low Reynolds number. It was especially considered how the roughness Reynolds number(k+) affected the change of the inlet and outlet conditions, the growth of the separation bubble (LSB), the status of the limiting streamline, the patterns of the wake. Regarding the roughness settings, five roughness magnitudes were mainly studied. The results showed that at low Re, surface roughness mainly improved the stage performance by reducing the length and width of the LSB, delaying the occurrence of three-dimensional flow separation, and increasing the turbulence level near the wall. However, it also aggravated the incoordination between the subsequent stages to a certain extent, which limited further improvement of the overall aerodynamic performance. Generally, with k+ increasing, the compressor aerodynamic performance improved, and achieved the best at k+= 137.8. The maximum increases in the total pressure ratio, peak efficiency, and chocked mass flow rate were approximately 4.01%, 5.34%, and 2.24% respectively.

This investigation discusses the impact of a non-steady outflow condition on the compressor stator flow in an annular cascade which is periodically chocked through a rotating disc in the wake, to simulate the expected conditions for a pulsed detonation engine (PDE). A 2D controlled diffusion airfoil of the highly loaded linear stator cascade by [1] has been transferred to the annular compressor test rig to compare results under non-steady conditions via multi-colored oil flow visualization on the suction side and pressure measurements in the wake of the blades. Three different Strouhal numbers of the choking device are investigated and analyzed by phase averaged pressure measurements downstream of the stator to visualize the unsteady flow characteristics. Triggered by the changed incidence angle due to the choking, separation on the suction side and in the hub region form a periodic event depending on the position of the blockage device. Active flow control (AFC) is implemented by means of side wall actuation at the hub to improve flow conditions. Pressure measurements show that the turning of the blades can be raised and a static pressure rise is gained by the AFC while periodic choking is active.

Gaseous slip flows in 3D rectangular microchannels with constrictions have been study numerically, and the experiment using pressure-sensitive-paints (PSP) for polymer microchannel pressure measurements are proposed. Constrictions inside microchannels, either being manufacturing defects or functional design features such as micro-orifices or micro-nozzles, will change the flow pattern because of additional frictional resistance and flow separation. In current research, mass-flowrate reduction due to constrictions has been investigated numerically for air flows in the slip regime, where Knudsen number ranges from 0.003 to 0.07. The results have been compared with both straight microchannels and with 3D analytical solutions. Similar to nozzle cases at macroscale, chocked flows has been observed at the critical pressure ratio of about 1.89. A numerical model including finite inlet and outlet chambers has been used in simulations to evaluate effects of reflection waves. Slip effects have been studied for different accommodation coefficients in presence of constrictions. By implementing multi-species numerical models, thermal induced mass transport has also been studied. Preliminary experiment based on PSP measurement for polymer microchannels has able to generate high spatial resolution pressure data, which are comparable with numerical simulations. Finally, further improvement of experimental setup is discussed.

A numerical analysis of the flow field in rough microchannel is carried out decomposing the computational physical domain into kinetic and continuum sub-domains. Each domain size is determined by the value of a proper threshold parameter, based on the local Knudsen number and local gradients of macro-parameters. This switching parameter is computed from a preliminary Navier–Stokes solution throughout the whole physical domain. The solution is then advanced in time simultaneously in both kinetic and continuum domains: the coupling is achieved by matching half fluxes at the interface of the kinetic and Navier–Stokes domains, taking care of the conservation of momentum, energy and mass through the interface. The roughness geometry is modeled as a series of triangular obstructions with a relative roughness up to a maximum of 5% of the channel height. A wide range of Mach numbers is considered, from nearly incompressible to chocked flow conditions and a Reynolds number up to 100. Accuracy and discrepancies between full Navier Stokes, kinetic and coupled solutions are discussed, assessing the range of applicability of first order slip condition in rough geometries. The effect of the roughness is discussed via Poiseuille number as a function of local Knudsen and Mach numbers.

Steam generator tubes have a history of small cracks and even ruptures, which lead to a loss of coolant from the primary side to the secondary side. Currently, steam generators operate under a leak-before-break approach. A rupture then signifies the loss of the integrity of the tube itself. Therefore, choking flow plays an integral part not only in the engineered safeguards of a nuclear power plant, but also to everyday operation. Choked flow of subcooled water through small cracks such as in steam generator tube wall cracks is studied both with experiments and analytical models. The knowledge of this maximum flow rate through a crack in the steam generator tubes of a pressurized water nuclear reactor will allow designers to calculate leak rates and design inventory levels accordingly while limiting losses during loss of coolant accidents. Slits of very small channel length to hydraulics diameter ratio (L/D) were manufactured and tested upto 6.89 MPa pressure and range of subcoolings 10–40 °C. Small flow channel length was used (1.3mm) equivalent to steam generator tube thickness with differences in surface roughness. The effect of L/D on the choking flow rates was examined and was contrasted with other data in literature. Analytical models were applied highlighting the importance of non-equilibrium effects and the effects of L/D ranging from 1.3 to 400 on the chocked flow were investigated.

By modeling a multi-component gas, a new source of indirect combustion noise is identified, which is named compositional indirect noise. The advection of mixture inhomogeneities exiting the gas-turbine combustion chamber through subsonic and supersonic nozzles is shown to be an acoustic dipole source of sound. The level of mixture inhomogeneity is described by a difference in composition with the mixture fraction. An n-dodecane mixture, which is a kerosene fuel relevant to aeronautics, is used to evaluate the level of compositional noise. By relaxing the compact-nozzle assumption, the indirect noise is numerically calculated for Helmholtz numbers up to 2 in nozzles with linear velocity profile. The compact-nozzle limit is discussed. Only in this limit, it is possible to derive analytical transfer functions for (i) the noise emitted by the nozzle and (ii) the acoustics travelling back to the combustion chamber generated by accelerated compositional inhomogeneities. The former contributes to noise pollution, whereas the latter has the potential to induce thermoacoustic oscillations. It is shown that the compositional indirect noise can be at least as large as the direct noise and entropy noise in chocked nozzles and lean mixtures. As the frequency with which the compositional inhomogeneities enter the nozzle increases, or as the nozzle spatial length increases, the level of compositional noise decreases, with a similar, but not equal, trend to the entropy noise. The noisiest configuration is found to be a compact supersonic nozzle.
