Nish, Ian. The History of Manchuria, 1840-1948. GB Folkestone: Amsterdam University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9781898823421.

Annotation:
In A History of Manchuria, Ian Nish describes the turbulent times which the three Northeastern Provinces of China experienced in the last two centuries. The site of three serious wars in 1894, 1904 and 1919, the territory rarely enjoyed peace though its economy progressed because of the building of arterial railways. From 1932 it came under the rule of the Japanese-inspired government of Manchukuo based at Changchun. But that was short-lived, being brought to an end by the punitive incursion and occupation of the country by Soviet forces in 1945. Thereafter the devastated territory was fought over by Chinese Nationalist and Communist armies until Mukden (Shenyang) fell to the Communists in October 1948. Manchuria, under-populated but strategically important, was the location for disputes between China, Russia and Japan, the three powers making up the 'triangle' which gives the name to the sub-title of this study. These countries were hardly ever at peace with one another, the result being that the economic growth of a potentially wealthy country was seriously retarded. The story is illustrated by extracts drawn from contemporary documents of the three triangular powers.

Annotation:
The book Russian Folklore on the Hills of Manchuria is the result of many years of field research by the author aimed at recording and studying the folklore of Chinese Russians living in the urban district of Ergun, Hulunbuir aimag, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, located on the border with the Trans-Baikal region of the Russian Federation. The older generation of Chinese-Russian “mestizos” preserved the language and folk repertoire of their Russian mothers and grandmothers who came to China after the Civil War (1918-1922) and before the era of rapid socio-political and economic change in the USSR. Russian Folklore on the Hills of Manchuria presents tales, mythological stories, legends, songs, charms and “chastushki” of the Chinese Russians in Manchuria for the first time. This is the most complete collection of their folklore, which for almost a century has existed in isolation from the maternal tradition of Eastern Transbaikal. Developing independently and assimilating foreign ethnic elements, this tradition has nevertheless preserved genre forms characteristic of the oral literature of Russian inhabitants of the Transbaikal Region of the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The book is intended for folklorists, linguists, ethnologists, ethno-musicologists, culturologists, and researchers of the Russian-Chinese borderlands.

Annotation:
China is a site for the evolution, not only of Chinese nationalism, but the nationalism of various non-Han ethnic groups. During the 20th century, these ethnic groups constructed and expressed their own identities and nationalism through interaction with one another and with outside influences. This interdisciplinary anthology contains nine original works that pluralize our understanding of nationalism in China by illustrating the various intellectual strains of China's nationalist discourse, the dichotomy between the political authorities' and grass roots' experiences, and the nationalizing efforts by various ethnic and political groups along China's inland and maritime frontiers. First, contributors explore the controversy surrounding the contested issue of China's national and international identity from pre-modern times to the present. Next, the authors examine China's nationalist encounters with foreign influences such as U.S. Marines in Shandong, Soviet experts in Manchuria, and recent friction between the United States and the PRC. Finally, essays expand beyond the ethnographic regions of the Han-Chinese and the political domain of the PRC to discuss the odyssey of Taiwan's nationalism in both a political and a cultural sense. Many selections are based on newly declassified archival materials.

Annotation:
Taiwan was the first acquired country to be placed on the Japanese overseas empire after the resounding victories of the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. This acquisition was not a primary objective of the Japanese imperial power, but it was a desire to undermine and to unseat Chinese influence over the strategic positions of Korea and southern Manchuria that encouraged Japanese aggression. The incorporation of Taiwan into the Japanese Empire reveals the particular historical relationship of Japanese colonialism in the geopolitics of global colonialism. The author emphasizes two issues in this chapter: (1) the particularization of Japanese imperialism and colonialism are different and unique, highlighting the interrelationship and interdependency of the Japanese case with the generality of global capitalist colonialism; and (2) the lack of the decolonization process in the separation of the Japanese Empire has prevented both Japan and Taiwan from addressing and confronting their colonial relationship and the overall Japanese colonial legacy.

Annotation:
This comprehensive volume tells the rarely recounted stories of the numerous foreign air forces that supported the German Luftwaffe as part of the Axis’ quest to dominate the European and Pacific theaters–a highly compelling and often overlooked chapter of World War II history. The Axis Air Forces: Flying in Support of the German Luftwaffe presents an untold history of that global conflict’s little-known combatants, who nonetheless contributed significantly to the war’s outcome. While most other books only attempt to address this subject in passing, author Frank Joseph provides not only an extremely comprehensive account of the “unsung heroes” of the Axis fliers, but also describes the efforts of Axis air forces such as those of the Iraqi, Manchurian, Thai or Chinese–specific groups of wartime aviators that have never been discussed before at length. This book examines the distinct but allied Axis air forces of Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. An extensive introduction provides coverage of Luftwaffe volunteers from Greece, Lithuania, Holland, Denmark, Norway and even the United States. Detailed descriptions of the personnel themselves and the aircraft they operated are portrayed against the broader scope of combat missions, field operations, and military campaigns, supplying invaluable historical perspective on the importance of their sorties.
