Phosphorus and sediment runoff are the primary cause of eutrophication in Cheney Lake, the primary water source for Wichita, Kansas. Best Management Practices (BMPs) such as no-till farming practices and nutrient management can be implemented to reduce phosphorus runoff on high-risk agricultural fields. Past efforts have established BMP use in this watershed, although the effectiveness of these efforts has not been evaluated. The goals of this project were to identify any existing water quality trends in the Cheney Lake watershed, estimate the current distribution of erosion in the watershed, and evaluate the placement of BMPs with regards to field-scale erosion risk. Parametric, multi-linear regression and non-parametric, seasonal Mann-Kendall analyses were used to identify trends in the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Phosphorus (TP) of grab samples from the North Fork Ninnescah River. A Geographic Information System (GIS) model based on the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used to estimate watershed-scale erosion, prioritize agricultural land for BMP placement, and evaluate existing placement of BMPs within the Cheney Lake watershed. No detectible trends were identified in the water quality data due to stream variability, frequency of sampling, or absence of actual improvement in water quality. Additional sampling must be done to detect any trends in the future. BMPs were implemented on 13% of prioritized field area, and 11% of non-prioritized field area. Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields were placed on 14% of prioritized field area, and 5% of non-prioritized field area. No-till practices were implemented on 13% of prioritized field area, and 18% of non-prioritized field area. The top 20% eroding fields were identified given current conditions, and account for approximately 56% of the watershed-wide erosion. The GIS method has demonstrated utility in evaluating past erosion control measures for the watershed and in informing future decisions concerning BMP placement.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleChannels are the main sedimentary structures for sediment transportation and deposition from the continents to the ocean floor. The significant permeability of their deposits enables fluid circulation and storage. As illustrated with turbiditic systems, those channel fill is highly heterogeneous. Combined with the spatial organization of the channels, this impacts significantly the connectivity between the permeable deposits. The scarcity of the field data involves an incomplete knowledge of these subsurface reservoir architectures. In such environments, stochastic simulations are used to estimate the resources and give an insight on the associated uncertainties. Several methods have been developed to reproduce these complex environments. They raise two main concerns: how to analyze and compare the connectivity of a set of stochastic simulations? How to improve the representation of the connectivity within stochastic simulations of channels and reduce the uncertainties? The first concern leads to the development of a method to objectively compare realiza-tions in terms of connectivity. The proposed approach relies on the connected compo-nents of the simulations, on which several indicators are computed. A muldimensional scaling (MDS) representation facilitates the realization comparison. The observations on the MDS are then validated by the analysis of the heatmap and the indicators. The appli-cation to a synthetic case study highlights the difference of connectivity between several methods and parameter values to model channel/levee complexes. In particular, some methods are far from representing channel-shaped bodies. Two main issues derive from the second concern. The first issue is the difficulty to simulate a highly elongated object, here a channel, conditioned to well or seismic-derived data. We rely on a formal grammar, the Lindenmayer system, to stochastically simulate conditional channel objects. Predefined growth rules control the channel morphology to simulate straight to sinuous channels. That morphology conditions the data during its development thanks to attractive and repulsive constraints. Such constraints ensure the conditioning while preserving at best the channel morphology. The second issue arises from the limited control on the channel organization. This aspect is addressed by taking into account the evolution processes underlying channel organization. An initial channel is simulated with a Lindenmayer system. Then that channel migrates using sequential Gaussian simulation or multiple-point simulation. This process reproduces the complex relationships between successive channels without relying on partially validated physical models with an often constraining parameterization. The applications of those various works to synthetic cases highlight the potentiality of the approaches. They open up interesting prospects to better take into account the connectivity when stochastically simulating channels

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis studies the French Rhone riverbed longitudinal organisation and its evolution over a century, with a view to improve the management strategy for the sediments. It first describes the geographic, geologic and hydrologic peculiarities of the 512-km long fluvial system. Gravel mining, dikes construction, channelization and dams construction have simplified the lateral pattern of the channel, incised and paved the riverbed and impoverished the aquatic and riparian habitats. The thesis then more precisely characterizes the riverbed dynamics. It relies on bathymetric data collected since 1897 and on grainsize data collected specifically for this study from over 300 samples on the whole 512-km river length. An homogeneous sampling protocol was elaborated on purpose. The vertical bed evolution and grainsize distribution were analysed to assess the riverbed potential mobility, tributaries’ sediment recharge and infrastructures’ impact on sediment transport. It thus appears that 1) riverbed incision is mainly due to channelization, 2) hydroelectric dams partitioned the continuum with the accumulation of fine sediments in some backwaters and the pavement of bypassed reaches downstream of Lyon and 3) a residual dynamic persists during major floods, with moderate gravels transport. The data of paved reaches were used in a 1D hydraulic model to quantify transport capacity and bedload discharge, confirming the aforementioned results. This study helps formulate such recommendations for sustainable river management and ecological restoration as opening slush gates during floods, changing dams management instructions or reinjecting gravel

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn a well-mixed condition, High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) is one of the most appropriate ways for algal biomass production. This study is interested in the effect of the hydrodynamics inside a lab-scale HRAP that plays an important role to realize proper mixing. Computational Fluid Dynamics has proven itself to offer the possibilities of understanding and optimizing complex hydrodynamic parameters that are commonly considered as decisive factors to the degree of mixing. In this study, two alternative CFD modeling approaches, Inlet Velocity and Dynamic Mesh methods, are used to simulate the pond hydrodynamics. Measured velocity and tracer data are used to validate and compare the performance of these approaches. Horizontal velocity profiles across the depth of flow at three locations display higher agreement with the experimental values in the Dynamic Mesh method than the Inlet Velocity method. On the other hand, with turbulence diffusion included in the Inlet velocity method, good agreement is found between simulated and experimental tracer values in fairly short simulation time than in the Dynamic Mesh approach. The computational time for Dynamic Mesh is extremely exaggerated without an equivalent advantage in the tracer simulation result over the Inlet Velocity method in this particular model setup. To enhance the velocity prediction from Inlet Velocity method, velocity profile from ADV measurement has been applied on the inlet patch of the model and better fitting curves are observed in this case. Simple modification has also been made on the geometry of the pond to demonstrate the effect of the flow deflector on mixing condition and power consumption. The provision of deflectors could make the velocity distribution uniform thereby minimizing power consumption and reducing the dead zones

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis work presents an analysis of the morphology and sedimentary dynamic of the Cap-Ferret and Capbreton turbidite systems (south Bay of Biscay), containing the first recognition of the whole Capbreton turbidite system. The dataset comprises subsurface geophysical data (multibeam bathymetric and imagery, Chirp sub-bottom profiler) and piston cores, acquired during the oceanographic cruise Sargass conducted by the Bordeaux University. Studied by morpho-bathymetric analyses, the upstream-downstream evolution of the sedimentary bodies joined to the sedimentological data help to understand the active gravity processes of the systems. In the Capbreton system, a special focus is made on its Holocene gravity deposits occurring at high frequencies. In the Cap-Ferret system, the channel-lobe transition zone has been investigated at high resolution and revealed sedimentary structures poorly documented at this scale of details in recent turbidite systems. The glacio-eustatic and autocyclic forcing are expressed in different ways in each turbidite sytem. A regional sedimentary dynamic model is proposed for the last 50,000 years
